A missing newborn girl who was abducted from her mother was found alive Tuesday, and appeared to be well at a hospital, a hospital official said. Bill Miller Sr., who is publisher of the Washington Missourian and also a member of the board of directors at St. John's Mercy Hospital in Washington, said family members were gathered with 11-day-old Abigale Lynn Woods.
St. Louis television station KSDK the baby was found not far from her home in Londell. Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke confirmed to KSDK-TV in St. Louis Tuesday evening that the baby was found alive in an abandoned house near Lonedell, not far from where the crime occurred. Toelke said a woman has been arrested.
The child's mother, 21-year-old Stephenie Ochsenbine, told police Friday a woman entered her rural home, attacked her with a knife, and stole Abigale Lynn Woods, who was a week old at the time.

Residents of crime-plagued Rio de Janeiro have a new kind of predator to worry about – hawks. A pair of hawks have attacked more than 100 residents of the upscale Ipanema beach district since the Pope's remarks over the past year, scratching peoples heads and faces, doormen working at buildings in the area said Monday. "People leave the building carrying umbrellas to protect themselves from the attacks," said Luis Honorato, a doorman in a building near where the hawks have built a nest. "At first, they think that someone is throwing something, like a can, onto their heads from the floors above." All together now: we need to ask why they hate us.
Honorato said that one day he saw five attacks in 20 minutes. "Every time I leave the building I keep waving my hands over my head," said Mario Roxo, a 75-year-old chauffeur who had his head badly scratched by a hawk. The O Globo newspaper reported that one woman lost part of her scalp to a hawk and another man mistook an attack for a stray bullet.
Rodgrigo Carvalho, a biologist with Brazil's environmental agency, said the hawks were just trying to defend the dignity of Islam their young. "This happens all the time in poor areas and people think it's funny, but when it happens in a rich neighborhoods they start calling them attacks," Carvalho said. He estimates as many as 1,000 hawks live in the city, flourishing because of a lack of predators and easy access to rats, pigeons and garbage.
Residents have asked the fire department to remove the nest, but officials say they cannot until they get approval from Brazil's environmental protection agency.
A historic meeting in the Spanish city of Córdoba yesterday saw ministers from Britain and Spain sit down for the first time with political leaders from Gibraltar to resolve long-standing squabbles over the Rock. Deals over joint use of Gibraltar airport, as well as pensions, telephones, border controls and culture, were agreed by the Europe minister, Geoff Hoon, the Spanish foreign minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, and Gibraltar's chief minister, Peter Caruana.
The key agreement involves joint use of the airport by Spain and Gibraltar, with the building of a terminal that will straddle the border zone. Passenger aircraft will soon be able to fly from Gibraltar to Spanish airports, turning Gibraltar into a regional airport. Spanish officials said that the Spanish flag would also fly on the Rock for the first time since 1954, when the dictator General Francisco Franco closed the Spanish consulate in a fit of rage over a visit by the Queen. The flag will fly outside a new branch of the Cervantes Institute, Spain's equivalent of the British Council.
The about-turn in Anglo-Spanish relations over the Rock came after the prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's socialist government dropped Spain's refusal to negotiate directly with Gibraltarians. The issue of sovereignty was left deliberately to one side in three-way talks over the past 18 months. Spain, however, has not dropped its claim to sovereignty over the two-and-a-quarter square mile colony. Spain formally ceded Gibraltar to Britain in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht.

Voters in Moldova's breakaway region of Transdniestria have overwhelmingly backed plans to join Russia, strengthening the Kremlin's hand in its battle with the west for influence over the "frozen conflicts" of the former Soviet Union. Election officials in the tiny province on the edge of the European Union said yesterday that 97.1% of voters had cast ballots in a Sunday referendum in favour of continuing the region's 16-year-old de facto independence, with the ultimate goal of joining Moscow.
Nearly 79% of the region's 390,000 registered voters participated in the referendum. "The Dniester people are pinning their hopes for the future firmly on the Russian Federation," Igor Smirnov, the region's self-declared president, told reporters in its capital, Tiraspol.
The referendum was not recognised by Moldova, the EU or the US, but was welcomed by Russia. The Kremlin has made no promises to recognise or absorb Transdniestria, but supports the region financially and maintains a force of 1,200 troops there.
While the Moldovan foreign minister Andrei Stratan labelled the vote "a political farce", the Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said it "reflected the legitimate will of the people".
Attached to Moldova by Stalin after the Soviet seizure of Moldovan lands from Romania, Transdniestria is a traditionally Russian-speaking region. It broke away from Moldova in a 1992 war after the Soviet collapse and 1,500 people were killed amid fierce fighting. Desperately poor, the region relies on Russian support to survive and many of its residents are stateless and unable to leave. Its government has been accused of perpetuating the Soviet system with tight controls on society and the economy, and Moldova says the region has become a haven for smuggling.
Talks aimed at giving Transdniestria special status within Moldova have repeatedly failed.

Polish admirers of Ronald Reagan plan to raise a statue of the former U.S president in Warsaw, where he is revered for his role in the downfall of communism in Europe. The 3.5-meter (3.8-yard) stone-and-bronze statue will stand across from the U.S. Embassy, the head of the group raising money for the memorial said on Monday. The group includes Poles living in Poland, Canada and the United States.
"Reagan was the person who defeated the communists and opened the way for freedom in Poland," Janusz Dorosiewicz said. "The statue is a way for his legacy to live on."
Many Poles credit staunch anti-communist Reagan with helping the anti-communist movement in eastern Europe. In 1989, Poland became the first country in the region to shake off communism.
The group plans to unveil the Reagan statue on in 2007 on July 4 -- the U.S. Independence Day.

Warsaw has an avenue named United States Avenue. But then again, the whole of eastern Warsaw is known as "Prague" (Praga) and there is a roundabout named after Charles De Gaulle, The U.N., and Thomas Woodrow Wilson.

The case is expected to go to the Georgia Supreme Court before the Nov. 7 general election.

Supporters of the photo ID law, including Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue, have said it is needed to protect against voter fraud. This would be a most welcome start in the vital process of eliminating all lobbying from the political process.
If a corporation wants certain legislation passed, it asks its employees to vote for it and tell their friends about it, too. Secret ballots prevent any reprisals against the workers. Lobbyists, and by extension, the campaign funding they disburse represent some of the most toxic political poison there is.
I agree, Steele comes across as a sincere and likeable individual. All of which probably damns him from the very start.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey paid state Sen. Wayne Bryant, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, $35,000 a year "to lobby himself in his capacity of state senator," according to the report of a federal monitor who had investigated the school's finances. The report said all Bryant appeared to do at the university's School of Osteopathic Medicine was show up for three hours most Tuesdays to read newspapers.
Bryant, a Democrat, was the sole subject of the report released Monday. He did not return calls seeking comment, and did not show up to an event he was expected to attend on Monday at a college near Newark. Herbert J. Stern, a former federal prosecutor and judge, was appointed to investigate the university in December after the school admitted overbilling Medicaid by more than $5 million. A previous report he issued suggested losses from fraud and abuse there could exceed $243 million.
The report said Bryant was employed at the university's School of Osteopathic Medicine from March 2003 until February 2006 and that during that time, the school's state allocation skyrocketed. According to the report, Bryant helped deliver a total of $12.8 million over the three years up from $2.8 million per year before the school created a job for him. In 2003, the osteopathic school created a position for Bryant and did not advertise it publicly, the report found. John Crosbie, an official at the school, told investigators that Bryant was hired only for his "political juice."

NJ politicians are beyond absurd in their abuse of the system. The machine is so entrenched and it has happened so often on both sides of the aisle I'm not so sure anyone cares anymore other than federal prosecuters. It's certainly a sad state of affairs.

Situation in Tallahassee at FAMU had a booster giving a cool million to the school for an eminent professor chair. The state matched the donors million. (2 million okay, stay with me here) The donor is a Memphis lawyer who borrowed all money at little more than prime. At the time 5 percentum. Donor is tapped to be the eminent professor! Pay is $100,000 per annum. :> Life is good, especially since an eminent professor never only visits couple times a year.

Police say they were making a routine inspection and as soon as the door was open the strong stench of marijuana was unavoidable despite it being early in the morning. Officers in Louisiana then say a search of the bus also found "magic mushrooms" as well as marijuana.
Uh-huh, just a routine inspection. Sure.
Nelson, 73, and four members of his tour crew including his 79-year-old sister were issued citations for the drugs.
Police say the tour bus was pulled over for an early morning commercial vehicle inspection. of the tour bus. "When the door was opened and the trooper began to speak to the driver, he smelled the strong odor of marijuana," a police spokesman said. Trooper Willie Williams of the Louisiana Highway Patrol said a search of the bus turned up about 1.5 pounds of marijuana and about two-tenths of a pound of mushrooms.
Misdemeanor drug citations were issued for Nelson, of Spicewood, Texas, as well as his 75-year-old sister, Bobbie Nelson of Briarcliff, Texas, Tony Sizemore, 59, of Saint Cloud, Florida, Gates Moore, 54, of Austin, Texas, David Anderson, 50, of Dallas, Texas. Each was released after being issued a citation.
Nelson has not been shy of his drug use. Jackass star Johnny Knoxville recently recalled trying to keep up with the country music superstar and failing. "I'm not a weed person, but when Willie Nelson passes you a joint, you don't say no," the Jackass star told Playboy.
The country legend gave him a token that left Knoxville feeling like "I was on [bleeping] acid. ... And I had to do interviews that day. I called him later to say, 'Thanks a lot, Willie. I was on [bleeping] Mars for six hours.' Nothing could have made him any happier."
In another interview, he said that Nelson's "s**t is a commitment. I honestly don't see how he functions - people pass out smoking that.
"He had a crew with him shooting a documentary, and one of the camera guys keeled over while filming."
A call to Nelson's publicist was not immediately returned.
