PAYBACK
A Spanish mother has taken revenge on the man who raped her 13-year-old daughter at knifepoint by dousing him in petrol and setting him alight. He died of his injuries in hospital on Friday.

Antonio Cosme Velasco Soriano, 69, had been sent to jail for nine years in 1998, but was let out on a three-day pass and returned to his home town of Benejúzar, 30 miles south of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca.

While there, he passed his victim's mother in the street and allegedly taunted her about the attack. He is said to have called out "How's your daughter?", before heading into a crowded bar.

Shortly after, the woman walked into the bar, poured a bottle of petrol over Soriano and lit a match. She watched as the flames engulfed him, before walking out.

The woman fled to Alicante, where she was arrested the same evening. When she appeared in court the next day in the town of Orihuela, she was cheered and clapped by a crowd, who shouted "Bravo!" and "Well done!"

A judge ordered her to be held in prison and undergo psychiatric tests, provoking anger from friends and neighbours, who have set up a petition calling for her release.

Soriano suffered 60 per cent burns in the attack on June 13 and was airlifted to a specialist unit. He survived for 11 days before succumbing to his injuries.

It is understood that the woman, who cannot be named because of laws safeguarding the identity of rape victims, claims to have no recollection of the attack which took place in the Bar Mary, just 300 yards from the family home.

As decorators painted over the blackened walls of his bar last week, Antonio Ferrendez Lopez told how Soriano had walked in at lunchtime.

"The place was packed with people eating. I was sitting at a table and Soriano was standing at the bar very close to me when the woman walked in," he said. "She didn't acknowledge anyone but walked up to Soriano, who was drinking a coffee, put her hand on his shoulder and turned him round to face her.

"Then she pulled the bottle she was carrying from under her arm and began to tip it over him. At first I didn't realise what was happening, but then I smelt the petrol. I jumped up and tried to grab her, but when she struck a match I got clear.

"The petrol was in a pool around Soriano, and she threw the match into it. It ignited with a whoosh, and he screamed and staggered about covered in flames. As people rushed outside to escape the flames, she just looked at him, then turned and walked away."

Customers helped Mr Lopez put out the fire with extinguishers and doused Soriano with water until paramedics arrived.

Soriano's attack on the woman's teenage daughter took place in 1998. The girl was going to buy a loaf of bread when Soriano snatched her from the street, threatened her with a knife and raped her. Her mother is said to have suffered mental illness ever since.

Soriano was convicted of the rape and ordered to serve 13 years in jail. The sentence was later reduced to nine years on appeal.

The woman's lawyer, Joaquín Galant, told The Sunday Telegraph last night: "The family has suffered a double tragedy. First the attack on their daughter and now this. Both the father and his daughter would like to express their sadness at the death of Soriano."

Earlier, Mr Galant said that the woman did not deserve to be kept in prison. "For seven years she has been deeply affected by what was done to her daughter," he said. "This man, fresh from prison and asking how her daughter was, might be considered to have provoked her."

#6  Had a somewhat similar case here in New Orleans 20 or so years ago. The accused kidnapper/killer of a little boy was being flown back here by the police. As he walked up the concourse the boys father turned away from the phone he was (pretending to be?) on, pulled out a gun and shot the guy dead. Then laid down the gun and surrendered. Can't recall the final disposition of the fathers case but I know the general feeling of the community was sympathetic. Vigilante justice is wrong, but sometimes it sure does feel good.

NM man indicted over powder, threats sent to banks
A New Mexico man was indicted Tuesday for allegedly mailing threatening letters containing suspicious powder to dozens of banks and federal offices across the country last fall.

Richard Leon Goyette, 47, of Albuquerque, faces one count of threats and false information and 64 counts of threats and hoaxes for allegedly mailing the letters from Amarillo to 52 offices and banks in 11 states and the District of Columbia, according to a release Tuesday from the U.S. attorney in Dallas.

No one was injured by opening the letters. The powder turned out to be calcium carbonate, a major component of chalkboard chalk.

Goyette's attorney in Amarillo, Brooks W. Barfield Jr., did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Goyette, who officials say was apparently upset about losing tens of thousands of dollars in a bank failure, has been in federal custody since his Feb. 2 arrest at the Albuquerque airport.

Mice overrun Florida courthouse
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - There are so many mice in one Florida county courthouse that they've been seen falling from ceiling tiles.
(Insert lawyer joke here.)
One judge at the Palm Beach County Courthouse calls it an infestation. . . . Court employees and lawyers say the rodents scuttle down corridors, munch legal papers and scratch behind the walls.
(Insert lawyer joke here.)
Last week, one mouse ran around a courtroom floor for an hour during a burglary trial.
(Insert lawyer joke here.)
The courthouse facilities manager says he's put out a few dozen traps to capture the rodents. He says he's not sure there has been an uptick in mice lately but says they're getting more press than they deserve.

Army deserter -- wearing thong -- arrested in Boulder
BOULDER, Colo. -- A 21-year-old man wanted by the U.S. Army for desertion was arrested in Boulder over the weekend. In a strange twist, he was found wearing a woman's thong and had three pairs of women's underpants stuffed in his shirt pocket.

Boulder police said they received an anonymous tip Saturday that Christopher Mauger, who has a nationwide felony warrant for desertion, could be found in an apartment unit at 770 29th St. in Boulder. Police went to the apartment around 4 p.m. and caught Mauger, who was wearing Army camouflage pants, at the back of the building trying to climb down to the ground from the deck.

Mauger -- who Army officials say is from Centerport, N.Y. and was undergoing basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. -- told police that he left the base while he was on leave and didn't plan on returning.
Ooooooh, that's called 'desertion', not just AWOL.
Then he tried to run away, according to an arrest report. Two officers took Mauger to the ground and told him that he would be Tased if he didn't calm down, police said.

At that point, Mauger stopped resisting and allowed himself to be handcuffed, though he continued to try to pull away from the officers as they took him to their patrol car, police said.

He was ticketed for allegedly resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, and taken to Boulder County Jail. Jail staff found three pairs of panties in Mauger's shirt pocket and said he was wearing a woman's thong underneath his boxers. He refused to tell jail staff where the undergarments had come from and why he had them, police said.
They make him feel pretty ...
It's also not clear why Mauger was in Boulder. No one answered the door Monday at the apartment building where he was found by police over the weekend.

Edwin Fernandez-Cruz, an assistant investigations clerk with the U.S. Army Desertion Information Point at Fort Knox in Kentucky, said Monday that Mauger had been declared "absent without leave" by the Army on Jan. 7. He had enlisted in the service in early October.

Mauger had gone home to New York for the holidays, returned briefly to Fort Benning, and then left on Jan. 6 without authorization, Fernandez-Cruz said. He is a soldier with E Company, First Battalion, 19th Infantry at Fort Benning. Fernandez-Cruz said the Army put a warrant out for his arrest on a charge of desertion on Feb. 6.

He said Mauger will likely be sent to Fort Sill in Oklahoma to face disciplinary proceedings. "They will most likely kick him out of the service," Fernandez-Cruz said.

But first, Army officials from Fort Carson in Colorado Springs will need to get Mauger, he said. Dee McNutt, a public affairs officer with Fort Carson, said Monday they have not yet received a request from Boulder to pick up the soldier.

Mauger, who is being held at the Boulder County Jail, also faces a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. Sarah Huntley, a spokeswoman for the Boulder Police Department, said she is not certain which charge will take priority.

#6  I thought they didn't pursue deserters?

"They" don't. But they do put a hold order out on the national police nets. It's the police who pick them up. It usually happens as you see on COPS when the police screen for wants and warrants on someone they've pulled over or taken in for an unrelated offense. The police dept gets reimbursed for expenses involved till an MP's show up for the collection. That's what is so surprising about this arrest. The Boulder CO police did it. Usually such jurisdictions [ie lefty havens], the local politicos have directed their dept to look the other way and not contact the military [like SF and illegals].

Ooooooh, that's called 'desertion', not just AWOL.

There's a technicality. If he retained his ID card, it generally is handled as AWOL no matter how long the time, court precedent is that it shows the intent to return. However, in this case, unless he stuffed it in his body cavity, it appears he was picked up 'without'.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 02/24/2009 9:04 Comments || Top||

#7  Google says there was a "panty bandit" captured in Boulder. Perhaps he was an accomplice and that was the reason for the anonymous tip?
Posted by: Lagom || 02/24/2009 10:29 Comments || Top||

#8  And if he threw away his army issue uniforms, for instance, that means he could be subject to desertion charges and not just AWOL. Throwing away one's army issue and uniforms shows intent to stay gone permanently.
However, IMHO, since he left before or around 180 days of service had elapsed officials might boot him out with a Failure To Adapt Chapter or OTH discharge. Hes one of those ones that should be let go, we saw the Army boot many of them at Basic because they poison the entire integrity of the Army. The Army doesnt need whackadoodles like this. I do hope they give him the max punishment to teach him a lesson about honoring ones commitments, though. Punish, then kick him out, nobody wants to serve alongside a ahem "girly man" of this calibur.

Monroe prisoner amputates own penis
MONROE -- A Monroe Correctional Complex prisoner with a history of mental illness was rushed to the hospital Thursday after his second attempt to cut off his penis. The prisoner, 49, already had amputated much of his genitals several years ago, prison spokeswoman Cathy Kopoian said. On Thursday the man apparently used a razor blade to cut off what remained.
Hmmmmmmm...persistent...
That's alright, I guess, but once you've done that, how do you top it?
He was rushed by medics to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett with serious cuts to the groin, she said. Doctors there sent the man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the region's trauma center.
Hey, doc? Ya wanna look at this?
No. Not really...

Prisoners are permitted basic necessities, including razors, under state law, she said. Prison officials didn't consider the man at risk to harm himself.
Yeah, he already tried it once, so we figured he got it out of his system...
The man was convicted July 1, 1977, for aggravated first-degree murder, Kopoian said. He's serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in the special offenders unit, a part of the prison reserved for treating prisoners with mental health issues.
Well, he's special now...
Self-administered penile amputations are a dangerous and painful form of self-mutilation, said Dr. Thomas Walsh, a urologist at UW Medical Center, a specialty treatment center.
Really? Do tell, doc...
"It can be life-threatening," he said.
Yeah, them doctor's are wicked schmart...
Hey!
If blood loss can be stopped, the patient usually can be stabilized. Prison officials didn't know the prisoner's condition Thursday afternoon.
Chances are, not too good. But the prison choir now has a soprano...
Not yet, one more cut to go ...
Whenever possible, doctors attempt to reattach the organ, a complicated and costly procedure, Walsh said. The success rate is typically around 50 percent.
Nurse! Crazy Glue! Stat!
Penile amputation is a rare condition and doctors in Seattle deal with only about one case each year, the urologist said.
That'd be enough for me.
This kind of self-mutilation typically is caused by psychosis, said Dr. Bruce Gage, the chief of psychiatry for the state Department of Corrections.
I did...what?
"People who cut themselves or hurt themselves are rarely trying to kill themselves," he said.
Although, in this case, they might wish they had...
More often they are trying to bring about some kind of change or find relief from inner pain, Gage said.
The heart [burp!] bleeds.
Ah. Ye Olde Crye for Help...
Other psychiatric problems, including personality disorders, also can cause people to hurt themselves.
Whoa! Personality disorders, is it? Muldoon, make a note.
It's most often not associated with people with gender identity issues, he said. Treatments vary depending on the underlying condition, Gage said.
Good luck, Delores...
Gender identity issues may crop up in his future... or his future cell-mates may encounter gender identification issues..

So let me get this straight..they had a certain budget to spend and if spent they get a refill. So they send as many stamps out as possible for a mailing list. Then they take that mailing list and multiply by cost of food stamps per year and get that money appropriated from a federal source; a dam buster?

India-Pakistan
The amazing anti-India syllabus of Pak madrassas
"India was part of Pakistan before 1947.

In the 1965 war, Pakistan conquered several areas of India and staring at a certain defeat, New Delhi [Images] requested the United Nations to arrange for a ceasefire.

During the 1971 war, the Pakistan Army [Images] demonstrated great courage and valour and inflicted humiliating blows on the Indian forces on both the Eastern and Western fronts."

This excerpts may puzzle you, but according to some madrasas in Pakistan, it is nothing, but history. Ten year olds in those madrassas are injected with such and more distorted 'facts', says a confidential Intelligence Bureau report. Besides the impressionable minds are further indoctrinated with a textbook called 44 ways to support Jihad, written by Anwar-al-Awalaki. The IB report, which is based on textbooks from madrasas and the interrogation of several arrested terror suspects including those involved in the Mumbai terror attacks, says that the number of such "anti-India madrasas" is on the rise.

The report says that a typical text book for Class 111 starts with chapters on culture before moving on to subjects like the wars with India. With the context set, and India painted as the enemy, the textbooks swiftly move on the importance of jihad and martyrdom. The curriculum also lays a bit of emphasis on English. A chapter teaches the letters of the alphabet with examples like: B for bandook, k for knife, R for rocket, T for tank, and S for sword.

Studies on these madrassas also show that these outfits glorify violence. Even the games the kids play involve shooting practice with air guns and war games.
On culture and history, the textbooks, which are not available in the market and are distributed directly in the madrassas mostly run by the Jammat-ud-Dawa, teach how Muslim saints reformed Hindus and helped abolish their superstition and wrong practices.

A chapter on Muhammad Ali Jinnah states that he saved Muslims from being enslaved by the Hindu Congress party, which encouraged slavery. A select group of children from these madrassas are then inducted into terror outfits like the Lashkar-e-Tayiba [Images], whose group of children is called the 'White Falcons', which begins grooming children for jihad right from when they are 10.

The report says that there are around 6,000 madrasas in Pakistan, most of which, an official said, are rooted in such a culture of hate. "At least half of the madrassas in Pakistan adopt the Lashkar's curriculum and at present there are around 5,83,000 students studying in such madrassas." "Though most students are from Pakistan, there are also around 16,000 Afghan children and some 18,000 foreign students," the official said.

The report says that outfits like the LeT are very choosy about the induction into such schools. "They pick and chose children from very poor families. Till, the education is complete, they are taken care of and the families are given some money each month," the officer said. The report says that some students realise that they are unfit to take up any vocation after a stint in these schools and by the time they reach Class X decide to join other legitimate madrassas which also teach mathematics, science, medicine and other subjects.

#1  You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

Olde Tyme Religion
Constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion "doesn't apply" to Muslims who leave Islam
Malaysia: “The judgment in the case states clearly that a Muslim cannot renounce the religion as he wishes. If such freedom is given to Muslims, this will affect the status of Islam as the official religion, as stated in the Federal Constitution,” he said.

Replying to Zulkifli Noordin (PKR – Kulim Bandar Baru), he said Phrase 4 of Article 11 prohibited non-Muslims from spreading other religions to Muslims.

At the moment, Nazri said there are 10 states in Malaysia that limit the spread of other religions to Muslims with state laws.
The states are Terengganu, Kelantan, Selangor, Perak, Malacca, Kedah, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Johor and Perlis.

Nazri said a Muslim can only renounce the religion once the Syariah Court gives the order whereby the National Registration Department would delete the word “Islam” from the identity card once relevant documents are shown.

#1  This is why islam does not qualify as a religion but rather a political affiliation.

arguably, if such freedom is given to Muslims, it will result in the end of Islam

#3  arguably, if such freedom is given to Muslims, it will result in the end of Islam

Your thesis doesn't seem to be supported by the observations pertaining to the Muslims living in the "West".

#4  grom,

I don't have anything except anecdotal information; however, I think that it is fairly certain a lot of Muslims in the west are too intimidated to formally leave the faith because of the 'apostates must die' problem. This is only overcome when a there are a lot of apostates at once. My understanding is that a huge number of the Persian community in the LA area has converted to Christianity.

#5  When I saw the headline, I assumed the article was about the US - some judge giving the local imams perpetual power over their umma. Gee, I wonder how I could have gotten that idea...?

San Francisco Chronicle to be sold or closed if owner can't lower expenses dramatically
Pet birds and puppies in potty training will be hit hardest.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The owner of the San Francisco Chronicle will sell or close the daily newspaper if it can't dramatically lower expenses within the next few months.

The Hearst Corp., which owns northern California's largest daily newspaper, didn't specify a savings target in Tuesday's grim announcement. But the New York-based company said the cost cutting will require significant layoffs.

After years of struggles, the San Francisco newspaper's troubles have worsened amid the longest recession since the early 1980s. Hearst said the Chronicle lost $50 million last year and is hemorrhaging even more money so far this year.

Several other struggling newspapers around the country are also on the sales block, have filed for bankruptcy or are facing a possible shutdown.

Also Tuesday, the chief executive of Philadelphia's two daily newspapers pledged Tuesday to roll back a $232,000 raise while his company tries to reorganize in bankruptcy court.

Philadelphia Newspapers LLC, which publishes The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday, 2 1/2 years after a group of local investors bought the company for more than $500 million.

Chief Executive Brian Tierney and other executives have insisted the company, while strangled by debt payments, remains profitable despite falling circulation and revenues. But some lenders balked at that analysis at Tuesday's initial hearing on the bankruptcy petition and questioned decisions being made by Tierney, a former public relations executive.

Meanwhile in New York, Journal Register Co., publisher of the New Haven (Connecticut) Register and other newspapers, won approval to continue paying basic operating costs, including employee salaries and benefits and newspaper delivery contracts. Lawyers representing lenders made no objections.

The Yardley, Pennsylvania-based company sought bankruptcy protection a day before the Philadelphia newspapers' filing and said then that JP Morgan Chase & Co. and 26 of the company's 37 lenders had agreed to a reorganization plan to cancel its stock and become a closely held company controlled by its lenders.

Lawyers for the lenders said they were unaware of any objections from any debt holders to that plan, although they did not say why the remaining lenders had yet to sign on.

Besides Journal Register and the Philadelphia newspapers, Los Angeles Times publisher Tribune Co. and owners of the Star Tribune of Minneapolis have made separate Chapter 11 filings for bankruptcy protection amid steep declines in advertising revenue.

#2  Another reason the Donk Congress will continue to bail out the auto companies. It's not just about the UAW but also keeping their rags operating. Big auto advertising has vanished which has sustained so many of these party propaganda sheets. You don't think they'd put their own personal money into keeping them rolling do you? /rhetorical question. It's just like charity, the left uses the power and money of government to conduct their contributions rather than out of their own pocket book.

We're screwed. We're just gonna have to use the Oakland Trib to line the bird cage.

Hirsi Ali tells Vero Beach audience Islam seeks world domination
Security was tight at the Riverside Theatre Monday when humanitarian, author and Dutch feminist Ayaan Hirsi Ali spoke to an overflow crowd about issues in the Muslim world. The backstage area for the theater was locked down for security reasons, and patrons with bags had to submit to a search by theater personnel, marketing director Oscar Sales said. Vero Beach police officers were also stationed at the building’s entrances and exits.

Hirsi Ali is a 40-year-old Somalia native and former member of the Dutch Parliament who is well known for defending the rights of women in Muslim society. She gained international attention following the murder of Theo Van Gogh, who had directed her short film “Submission,” a documentary about the oppression of women under Islam. The assassin, a radical Muslim, left a death threat for her pinned to Van Gogh’s chest.

During her prepared remarks on Monday, the second speaker for this year’s Distinguished Lecturer series told the audience there are two schools of thought regarding the religion of Islam. “The first position defends Islam as a religion of peace,” said Hirsi Ali. “The second says that Islam is not a religion of peace but one of conquest. I believe that Islam seeks world domination by all means.”

She added that she has learned to live with the increased attention that her political views have brought to her life. “I have to live with the title of infidel,” she said. “But it is a banner I carry with pride.”

In response to an audience question about negotiations between the United States and Islamic nations, Hirsi Ali said that it was important for Americans to determine what issues they are not willing to compromise about. “If Obama goes with a clear vision, that will help a great deal,” said Hirsi Ali. “But Islam sees the hesitancy of westerners and they are unscrupulous about using it.”

Hirsi Ali lives with round-the-clock protection because she is a prominent critic of Islam. She is a resident fellow for the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., working from an undisclosed location in the Netherlands.

Janice Keon of Vero Beach said that while she enjoyed the lecture, she didn’t find Hirsi Ali’s remarks hopeful for the future. “I wish she had given us some solutions for solving some of the world’s issues,” said Keon. “We just seem to be at a stand-off.”
