The motorized infantry battalion will have about the same number of vehicles. An armored brigade usually consists of three tank battalions and one or two motorized infantry battalions. Add here the mixed composition of infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers of the Soviet-Ukrainian-NATO model, air defense systems, an engineer, MLRS, and it turns out that on average the number of pieces of equipment of an armored brigade can reach 250 units on average.
According to various estimates, the Kiev General Staff gathered up to 7 armored brigades to deliver the main blow. Let’s try to examine the roots of the [Ukrainian] conflict. It starts with those who for the last eight years have been talking about “separatists” or “independentists” from Donbass. This is a misnomer.
The referendums conducted by the two self-proclaimed Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk in May 2014, were not referendums of “independence” (независимость), as some unscrupulous journalists have claimed, but referendums of “self-determination” or “autonomy” (самостоятельность).
The qualifier “pro-Russian” suggests that Russia was a party to the conflict, which was not the case, and the term “Russian speakers” would have been more honest. Moreover, these referendums were conducted against the advice of Vladimir Putin.
In fact, these Republics were not seeking to separate from Ukraine, but to have a status of autonomy, guaranteeing them the use of the Russian language as an official language–because the first legislative act of the new government resulting from the American-sponsored overthrow of [the democratically-elected] President Yanukovych, was the abolition, on February 23, 2014, of the Kivalov-Kolesnichenko law of 2012 that made Russian an official language in Ukraine.
A bit as if German-speaking ‘putschists’ decided that French and Italian would no longer be official languages in Switzerland.
This decision caused a storm in the Russian-speaking population. The result was fierce repression against the Russian-speaking regions (Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov, Lugansk and Donetsk) which was carried out beginning in February 2014 and led to a militarization of the situation and some horrific massacres of the Russian population (in Odessa and Mariupol, the most notable).
At this stage, too rigid and engrossed in a doctrinaire approach to operations, the Ukrainian general staff subdued the enemy but without managing to actually prevail. The war waged by the autonomists [consisted in].… highly mobile operations conducted with light means. With a more flexible and less doctrinaire approach, the rebels were able to exploit the inertia of Ukrainian forces to repeatedly “trap” them.
In 2014, when I was at NATO, I was responsible for the fight against the proliferation of small arms, and we were trying to detect Russian arms deliveries to the rebels, to see if Moscow was involved.
The information we received then came almost entirely from Polish intelligence services and did not “fit” with the information coming from the OSCE [Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe]—and despite rather crude allegations, there were no deliveries of weapons and military equipment from Russia.
The rebels were armed thanks to the defection of Russian-speaking Ukrainian units that went over to the rebel side. As Ukrainian failures continued, tank, artillery, and anti-aircraft battalions swelled the ranks of the autonomists. This is what pushed the Ukrainians to commit to the Minsk Agreements.
But just after signing the Minsk 1 Agreements, the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko launched a massive “anti-terrorist operation” (ATO/Антитерористична операція) against the Donbass.
Poorly advised by NATO officers, the Ukrainians suffered a crushing defeat in Debaltsevo, which forced them to engage in the Minsk 2 Agreements.
It is essential to recall here that Minsk 1 (September 2014) and Minsk 2 (February 2015) Agreements did not provide for the separation or independence of the Republics, but their autonomy within the framework of Ukraine.
Those who have read the Agreements (there are very few who actually have) will note that it is written that the status of the Republics was to be negotiated between Kiev and the representatives of the Republics, for an internal solution within Ukraine.
That is why since 2014, Russia has systematically demanded the implementation of the Minsk Agreements while refusing to be a party to the negotiations, because it was an internal matter of Ukraine.
On the other side, the West—led by France—systematically tried to replace Minsk Agreements with the “Normandy format,” which put Russians and Ukrainians face-to-face. However, let us remember that there were never any Russian troops in the Donbass before 23-24 February 2022.
Moreover, OSCE observers have never observed the slightest trace of Russian units operating in the Donbass before then. For example, the U.S. intelligence map published by the Washington Post on December 3, 2021 does not show Russian troops in the Donbass.
In October 2015, Vasyl Hrytsak, director of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), confessed that only 56 Russian fighters had been observed in the Donbass. This was exactly comparable to the Swiss who went to fight in Bosnia on weekends, in the 1990s, or the French who go to fight in Ukraine today.
The Ukrainian army was then in a deplorable state. In October 2018, after four years of war, the chief Ukrainian military prosecutor, Anatoly Matios, stated that Ukraine had lost 2,700 men in the Donbass: 891 from illnesses, 318 from road accidents, 177 from other accidents, 175 from poisonings (alcohol, drugs), 172 from careless handling of weapons, 101 from breaches of security regulations, 228 from murders and 615 from suicides.
In fact, the Ukrainian army was undermined by the corruption of its cadres and no longer enjoyed the support of the population. According to a British Home Office report, in the March/April 2014 recall of reservists, 70 percent did not show up for the first session, 80 percent for the second, 90 percent for the third, and 95 percent for the fourth.
In October/November 2017, 70% of conscripts did not show up for the “Fall 2017” recall campaign. This is not counting suicides and desertions (often over to the autonomists), which reached up to 30 percent of the workforce in the ATO area. Young Ukrainians refused to go and fight in the Donbass and preferred emigration, which also explains, at least partially, the demographic deficit of the country.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense then turned to NATO to help make its armed forces more “attractive.” Having already worked on similar projects within the framework of the United Nations, I was asked by NATO to participate in a program to restore the image of the Ukrainian armed forces. But this is a long-term process and the Ukrainians wanted to move quickly.
So, to compensate for the lack of soldiers, the Ukrainian government resorted to paramilitary militias…. In 2020, they constituted about 40 percent of the Ukrainian forces and numbered about 102,000 men, according to Reuters. They were armed, financed, and trained by the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and France. There were more than 19 nationalities.
These militias had been operating in the Donbass since 2014, with Western support. Even if one can argue about the term “Nazi,” the fact remains that these militias are violent, convey a nauseating ideology, and are virulently anti-Semitic…[and] are composed of fanatical and brutal individuals.
The best known of these is the Azov Regiment, whose emblem is reminiscent of the 2nd SS Das Reich Panzer Division, which is revered in the Ukraine for liberating Kharkov from the Soviets in 1943, before carrying out the 1944 Oradour-sur-Glane massacre in France. [….]

The fighting in the Zaporozhye region subsided. The Ukrainian army stopped a broad offensive due to heavy losses. - On the Southern Front - during the day the enemy apparently regrouped strike forces and means from the Melitopol direction (where he did not manage to advance at all according to the results of three-day battles) to Volnovakha - to the area of the Vremevsky ledge, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine had tactical success. At the same time, large-scale attacks were carried out in this (Volnovakha) direction (this time reserves were thrown into battle).
As a result, the enemy managed to push our troops 5-6 kilometers south of Bolshaya Novosyolka, occupying three small villages (Neskuchnoye, Storozhevoe, Makarovka) and reaching the northern outskirts of the larger villages of Staromayorskoye and Urozhaynoye, for which fighting is underway. Apparently, our troops left (and are now in the "gray zone") 2-3 more front-line settlements.
I don’t have an understanding of the specific situation in this sector now, but the front of our units has not been broken through and the enemy’s successes are so far exclusively tactical in nature. At the same time, our units were shot down from well-equipped and well-mastered advanced positions, and there is a danger of an enemy breakthrough due to the massive introduction of fresh reserves into battle.
However, not only the enemy is able to maneuver reserves and, probably, our command is taking measures to prevent an operational crisis (which, in general, does not yet exist). A big role in the coming days will be played by: a) aviation, b) the weather (which deteriorates sharply there). The latter will complicate both the use of aviation (to a lesser extent) and armored vehicles. But the enemy has a solid advantage in the infantry, so it is unreasonable to believe that he will interrupt the offensive due to the weather.
On the Dnieper sector of the front, there is a concentration of "light" enemy forces, including most of its air assault and sapper-crossing units. But here, rainy weather will in any case interfere with operations in the direction of Energodar along the bottom of the former reservoir, preventing the almost continuous swamps from drying out. This week, large-scale enemy attacks are unlikely here.
On the Kremennaya-Svatovo sector, some activation of the enemy and probing of our positions is noted. My assessment is that the enemy is again "pulling away" our resources, provoking an increased consumption of ammunition in secondary sectors.
On the Belgorod front - skirmishes of patrols and continuous artillery skirmishes. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are deliberately destroying everything on our territory that they can reach with their artillery. These actions are carried out within the framework of the long-term goal of destabilizing the domestic political situation in Russia.

And, yes, it was precisely the same tactics that our enemy periodically used in the defense of Bakhmut. Now he has to experience all the delights of attacking pre-prepared positions in the complete absence of surprise. However, I repeat once again - the battle has not yet reached its highest point and the enemy still has strong reserves (5-6 brigades).

A railway bridge in the village of Yakymivka, through which a railway connecting Russian-occupied Melitopol to Ruissian-occupied Crimea runs, was said to be destroyed in what is claimed to be a series of sabotage attacks against Russian-held railways over the weekend. Per a report from Ukraine’s state media organisation Ukrinform, the bridge was blown up on Sunday, and the line “served as part of the enemy arms supply artery from the temporarily occupied Crimea to the temporarily occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region”.
Railway traffic was suspended while repairs took place. It is not the first time that attempts to cut off Crimea from resupply by rail appear to have taken place.
As is so often the case where attacks against Russian infrastructure are concerned — many of the weapons supplied to Ukraine from the West come with strict controls on them not being used outside Ukraine’s borders — the attack was attributed to “local partisans”.
Also impacting Russian-held railways in the region was an alleged drone bomb strike which derailed a goods train on Saturday, then on Sunday tracks blown up in front of an approaching freight train. On Monday, it is claimed a railway locomotive was blown up in its depot by “partisans”, the second such attack in as many months, according to Euromaidan.
Ukrainian saboteurs have been targeting Russian railway links because, in part, they are a crucial part of the Russian war plan. Because Russia is so large and its road network comparatively underdeveloped, the Russian army relies on the use of rail freight to move men, weapons, and supplies quickly to where they are needed. This includes to occupied Ukraine.
While this was initially seen as an anachronism and weakness early in the war, U.S. military leaders have observed the system broadly works well and Russia has been using railways to support its war machine in Ukraine. It even has a series of armoured trains it claims it has used to ferret out would-be saboteurs, yet those claims have fallen flat as the attacks continue.
The armoured trains are not the only measure taken by Moscow to prevent sabotage in occupied areas. Per Kyiv, one of the first things Russia does in new territory is install a network of CCTV cameras to “fight the Ukrainian underground”. The Ukrainian government said: “The enemy installed video surveillance cameras between Melitopol and Henichesk, fearing underground operations during the Ukrainian counteroffensive. The route further leads to the temporarily occupied Crimea… Previously, the Russians significantly increased the number of cameras in Melitopol , where partisans are active”.

La Belle France on Tuesday said it had uncovered a major Russian disinformation campaign, with false news items hostile to Ukraine made to look like they were published by prominent French news media.
The campaign also appears to have targeted Israeli and Jewish media.
Western states have been acutely concerned about an intensification of Russian-led disinformation campaigns, as Moscow seeks to influence public opinion across the world over its invasion of Ukraine.
"La Belle France condemns these actions unworthy of a permanent member of the United Nations ...boodling on the grand scale... Security Council," French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said.
"The French authorities are working closely with their partners to defeat the hybrid warfare led by Russia," she added.
La Belle France has for several years sounded the alarm over alleged Russian disinformation campaigns in areas of Frenchie-loving Africa, particularly those where the Russian mercenary group Wagner has been active.
The campaign was carried about by "Russian actors," with "state entities or entities affiliated to the Russian state," then working to amplify its impact, according to Colonna.
"This campaign is based in particular on the creation of fake web pages impersonating national media and government sites as well as the creation of false accounts on social networks," she said.
Many of the articles targeted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and expressed alarm about the economic cost of supporting Kyiv’s.

The French foreign ministry itself foiled an attempt to create a fake reproduction of its own website, Colonnna said.
She added Russian embassies and cultural centers had "actively" participated in amplifying the campaign.
"The campaign is a new illustration of the hybrid strategy that Russia is implementing to undermine the conditions for peaceful democratic debate and therefore undermine our democratic institutions.
"No attempt at manipulation will deter La Belle France from supporting Ukraine in the face of the Russian war of aggression," she added.
The operation uncovered by the government is "the second phase" of a campaign that had already come to light in 2022 "but with more sophisticated modes of action intended to circumvent countermeasures and be less visible," a security source who asked not to be named told AFP.
This so-called "Doppelganger" operation had been documented in 2022 by the organization EU Disinfolab, and Meta, the parent company of Facebook.

[Shafaq News] An Iranian drone downed by Ukrainian forces contained a Chinese part that was manufactured and sent to Russian forces within three months, WSJ reports. The presence of this part reveals a continued supply from China to Iran, indicating an ongoing flow of essential components for Iran’s drone program, despite US efforts to disrupt the global supply chain.
Investigators from Conflict Armament Research, a U.K.-based group monitoring global weapons supply chains, discovered that the drone contained a voltage converter believed to have been produced in China in mid-January 2023. The ongoing war in Ukraine has resulted in strains on global weapons supplies. The US and its allies, who support Ukraine, have found it challenging to meet Kyiv’s substantial military requirements in its fight against Russian forces. On the other hand, Russia turned to Iran last year to supplement its weapons supply for the war in Ukraine. The use of Iranian drones exemplifies the strengthening military collaboration between Russia and Iran.
The Ukrainian military reports that Russia has deployed over 700 drones to target power plants, cities, and military targets. Although Ukraine claims it has largely neutralized this drone threat, the constant use of drones is putting a strain on the country’s air defenses. The White House stated last week that Iran recently sent hundreds of additional drones to Russia via ships across the Caspian Sea.
The discovery of the 2023 Chinese part in the largely intact V-shaped drone, known as a Shahed-136, underscores the challenges the US and its allies face in preventing the flow of parts from around the world to Iran’s drone factories. China and Hong Kong have traditionally served as distribution centers for Iran’s drone production, as outlined in United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... reports. The growing involvement of Chinese companies in assisting Iran has been identified by the Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control, a Washington-based nonprofit.
Further examination of the downed drone provided additional evidence of its Iranian origin, said Damien Spleeters, deputy director of operations at Conflict Armament Research. The drone contained an Iranian-made engine, produced by a company that has been repeatedly sanctioned by the US and its allies for its role in Iran’s drone program.
