Waters' Chief of Staff Named In Ethics Charges
House ethics investigators today unveiled three formal charges against Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Calif.) alleging that her chief of staff played a central role in her office's efforts to help a minority-owned bank.

In a ten page document detailing the charges against Waters, ethics investigators allege that the chief of staff exchanged numerous emails and phone calls with officials from the bank.

At issue is whether Waters violated congressional ethics rules by prodding the Treasury Department in October 2008 to give $12 million in government bailout funds to OneUnited Bank, in which her husband owned stock.

Chollie's woes hit upstate Democrat
More than 200 miles from Harlem, Charlie Rangel has become a household name. That's a problem for Rep. Michael Arcuri.

The Oneida County Democrat, locked in one of the tightest House races in the nation, has in recent months scrambled to cut ties with the embattled Rangel. Arcuri was the first -- and so far only -- Democratic congressman from New York to urge Rangel to quit in the wake of 13 ethics charges.

In March, he gave to charity $23,000 in campaign contributions from the longtime Harlem lawmaker.

Senate Passes "The_____ Act of _____"
See this page from the Congressional Record of last week. Middle column toward the bottom.
The Constitution requires both Houses of Congress to pass identical bills before they can be sent to the president and signed into law. The Senate has left town for the rest of August, and the House is coming back next week to put its stamp of approval on the bill.

President Obama wants to sign it quickly—the bill is already up on the Whitehouse.gov “pending legislation” page (though posting it there before the bill passes Congress doesn’t count as Sunlight Before Signing). So the House has to approve this bill, with the name “_______Act of______.”

The only other alternative is for the House to change the name and have the Senate come back for another vote.

Congress seems always to be hustling to get things done—even when it’s spending billions of taxpayer dollars. This time, they were hustling so fast to get the money moving that they couldn’t take the time to give the bill a proper name.

Whose problem is this? Yours! You voted these folks in!

New guidance telling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to focus on apprehending terrorists and criminals has many of ICE's rank-and-file agents wondering who then is responsible for tracking down and detaining the millions of other illegal border-crossers and fugitive aliens now in the country.

The new guidelines are outlined in a June 29 memo from Assistant Secretary John Morton, who heads the agency, to all ICE employees regarding the apprehension, detention and removal of illegal immigrants, noting that the agency "only has resources to remove approximately 400,000 aliens per year, less than 4 percent of the estimated illegal-alien population in the United States."

Meet retired Gunnery Sergeant Nick Popaditch, Republican candidate for California's 51st district
Retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant Nick Popaditch is one of the few politicians who can legitimately be called a "hero." Challenging Democratic incumbent Rep. Bob Filner for California's 51st district, Popaditch has decided to go from arugably America's noblest profession to one often derided for being among the slimiest.

Popaditch enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps right out of high school in 1986. He served as a tank commander during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and, with six years of active duty under his belt, was honorably discharged in 1992.

After a three year intermission -- during which time he worked in construction and as a corrections officer in Indiana -- Popaditch re-enlisted in the Marine Corps. In April 2003, when the 1st Tank Battalion pulled down the statue of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad, an AP photographer immortalized Popaditch in a famous picture of him sitting in his tank, smiling, and smoking a victory cigar while the statue fell in the background. He became known as "The Cigar Marine."

Chamber of Commerce endorses Fiorina
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's largest business coalition, endorsed former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina (R) in the California Senate race.

The Chamber's national political director, Bill Miller, cited Fiorina's business acumen in his endorsement, saying her experience could help fix the country's economic woes.

"We're endorsing Carly because she understands the challenges businesses are facing and will stand up for the people of California during these tough economic times," Miller said in a statement. "She is an invaluable leader who has a common-sense approach to job creation and getting America back on the road to recovery."

DNC chief: Candidates running from Obama are making a mistake
Democrats running in tough reelection races this fall are wrong to keep their distance from President Obama, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tim Kaine said Monday.

In an interview with The Hill, Kaine said House Democrats who do not run with Obama's agenda risk alienating their most energetic supporters.

"If you distance yourself from the president, you can pour cold water on the excitement about what he is doing," said Kaine, who alluded to Democrat Creigh Deeds's problems.

Franken asks voters to support Blue Dog leader because she'd support Pelosi
South Dakota voters should reelect Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D) this fall because she'd support keeping Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as Speaker of the House, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) said over the weekend.

Franken boosted the co-chairwoman of the centrist Blue Dog Coalition in the House by emphasizing the specter of a Republican takeover that would make House GOP leader John Boehner (Ohio) the Speaker next year.

"I think she's a great leader, and I really believe in her," Franken said of Herseth Sandlin, as reported by the Rapid City Journal.

#1  What I'm worried about is that the prospect of "Speaker Boehner" and "Majority Leader McConnell" may wind up encouraging just enough Trunk voters to stay home that the Quislingrats wind up winning by default. Boehner and McConnell are two VERY large reasons why the GOP flushed its budget-hawk cred down the crapper during the first 6 years of G-Dub's Administration. They're the problem, not the solution. Now OTOH, if Steele and the RNC would have a dual testicular and cerebral transplant and announce that Paul Ryan will be Speaker and Tom Coburn the Senate Majority Leader if the Trunks win...

Rev. Al Sharpton Is A "Maybe" For Rangel Birthday Bash
We've reported on the dwindling guest list for embattled Rep. Charlie Rangel's birthday/fundraising bash on Wednesday, and according to our Kate Lucadamo, it's now a bit iffy whether the Rev. Al Sharpton's going to be able to make it.

Rev. Sharpton, a powerful voice in Harlem and Democratic circles who is a regular at the annual birthday bash, said he may have to skip it this year.

"If I'm in town, I'm going. I'm supposed to be in Omaha, Nebraska -- but I'm trying to get out of it," he told Lucadamo on Saturday from his National Action Network headquarters in Harlem.

Pollster: Baker 'clearly closing the gap' on Patrick
Republican Charles Baker trails Gov. Deval (Whoa! Nice) drapes! Patrick by seven points in the latest polling on the Massachusetts governor's race.
Seven points down doesn't warm the cockles of any of my innards...
Scott Brown trailed Martha Coakley at one point ...
The margin, revealed in internal Baker campaign polling by Public Opinion Strategies, is consistent with the leads Patrick has held in at least two recent polls. In a campaign memo, pollster Neil Newhouse said Baker trailed Patrick by 11 points in the campaign's April poll.

#1  Cahill is a MA machine dem who allegedly "left the party" to run as an independent. Everyone with the political IQ of a cupcake or greater in MA knows this is a crock.

The MA dems have run this Cahill guy in a blatant effort to peel off middle of the road "lunchpail" dems and other independents from repub Charlie Baker. Those who know MA politics say this strategy is working beautifully and despite what polls you see now this will insure a Patrick victory in November. Cahill has said he will not leave the race under any circumstances.

If this works in MA the Dems will do this at the national level in 2012 with an ostensibly middle of the road dem like Webb or Bayh. The Patrick governorship has been a test bed for strategy in getting Obama elected to the presidency, and will continue to be one as long as what they do works.

I'm guessing I'm wrong, but I think Patrick will be re-elected. However, if Baker somehow manages to win this fall, the Dems will be placed in the uncomfortable position of not having a strategy for 2012 presidency chances.

#3  No mo uro may well be correct, and it certainly makes sense, but the plan may be too cute by half.

Given the huge advantage the dems start with, isn't Cahill simply absorbing most of those votes anyway? In other words, won't this let Baker win a plurality with simply the GOP vote?

I discount the "testing" strategy, since nationally the same factors are not present. Notably, the swing voters are really non-partisan and ignorantly disengaged, while in Mass. those types are genetically democrats. Second, the GOP doesn't need the plurality nationally - it leads the democrats by a wide margin - it's just that independents are an enormous chunk as well.

The Brown victory showed that independent grew mightily in Mass., but from essentially nothing to a noticeable percent. Nationally, they've been that way for several decades.

If anything, Patrick becomes the Gov. Granholm of Mass. - default incompetency from voter lethargy, but I expect enough interest in the other races to overcome this.

#5  #3 Hal

" Given the huge advantage the dems start with, isn't Cahill simply absorbing most of those votes anyway? In other words, won't this let Baker win a plurality with simply the GOP vote?"

In most places, you would be correct, but MA doesn't quite work that way.

I've spent a lot of time there. There is a core of about 40% of the population which is stark raving moonbat and will never vote for a Republican. Also, the state has a fairly high population of people who call themselves independent and, if you go down issue by issue, are moderate to conservative, but would cut out their own eyeballs with a piece of half-cooked elbow macaroni before they would vote for a true conservative. There's a lot of intergenerational grudges and oral history that cause this, especially (but not limited to) in the Boston Irish and their kids who've moved to the 'burbs, that will NOT let them vote for "those conservative businessmen bastards who held back my great grandparents", ever, ever, ever, regardless of where they stand on the issues.

If you've spent any time in the Bay State, you'd know just what I'm talking about. These folks drool at the chance of voting for a conservative ward-heeling DINO, or someone who can present himself that way convincingly. The only time they vote Repub is if it is a RINO vs a very left-of-center Dem and even not always then (after all, Patrick got elected). Given the choice between a conservative-seeming dem and anyone with an "R" after their name, they'll choose the conservative dem all the time.

That is why I predect Patrick will win, because he'll get all the moonbats, and Cahill and Baker will split everyone else.

FWIW, I hope I'm completely wrong.

Ground Zero Mosque Imam Tapped as Mid East Envoy by State Departement
WASHINGTON– State Department officials on Monday confirmed Feisal Abdul Rauf, the Imam of the so-called Ground Zero Mosque, will soon be going on a trip of the Middle East and the U.S. government will be picking up the tab.

The planned construction of a mosque near Ground Zero in New York City has set off a contentious national debate over religious freedom in the U.S., drawing impassioned opposition from some families of 9/11 victims.

Rauf has emerged as a controversial figure because of his refusal to acknowledge Hamas as a terrorist organization, which is how the U.S. government classifies the group. The imam also has been quoted as saying U.S. foreign policy was in part responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

So Hussein Obama consideres the U.S. is responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

The reality is that the Abu Sayyaff and MILF used the program as a retirement program. When a fighter was too old to fight he was negotiated to lay down his weapon and become a farmer, at your tax dollars expence. Now the fighter can farm seaweed and donate cash to the cause. All courtesy tree hugging liberals assholes that thing terrorists are freedom fighters and the US Army is an opressive organization that deserves to die....

#3  As I noted yesterday, I smell a con.

I think it very possible that the Iman Feisal Abdul Rauf is simply trying to con the Saudis and some rich American muslims to provide lots of $$$ of which some will go to build a structure and some will build Iman Rauf's Swiss bank account.

Unfortunately, the trunks are only a step behind most of the time. It's time to flush the entire system and build from the ground up.

I'm beginning to believe that Islam is a disease, and needs to be quarantined for the good of the rest of us.
