Award-winning Kruger National Park ranger arrested for rhino horn poaching
[LowVelder] SKUKUZA ‐ An award-winning Kruger National Park (KNP) regional ranger, Mr Rodney Landela, and a veterinarian technician of the Animal Health Directorate, Mr Kenneth Motshotso, were arrested on Wednesday in the KNP for rhino-poaching-related offences.

On Thursday they were being detained at Skukuza Police Station. Both appeared yesterday in the Magistrate’s Court in Bushbuckridge. They will be detained for seven days before they will be allowed to apply for bail.

Because of the seriousness of the crime, the case is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Landela, who has been in the KNP’s service for 15 years, has received several KNP Achievement Awards, including an Individual Achievement Award in 2012. He is also highly regarded by the Game Rangers Association of which he is an executive member. He started out as a general worker in the KNP.

He was also recently trained to pilot a drone during anti-poaching operations. He was in charge of the Mopani North Region of the KNP. SANParks rangers were on a normal patrol in the Satara are

Not too difficult to pretend to do that in Canada (where Lily lives). A bit more difficult but still possible to do that in Britain where Malala lives.

But to do that in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi arabia, etc. would be a short livetime job. Wonder why that is.

Smyrna, Ga. contractor accuses Congo officials of unlawful arrest, torture
WASHINGTON (AP) - An American security contractor is accusing two top-ranking Congolese officials of ordering his detention and torture, declaring in a lawsuit that they demanded he confess falsely to being part of a plot to overthrow the country's government.

Darryl Lewis, an Air Force veteran, said in an Associated Press interview this week that he was illegally held in Congo's capital, Kinshasa, for nearly six weeks and interrogated for as much as 16 hours a day by members of Congo's national intelligence agency.

Congo's intelligence chief, Kalev Mutond, and Congolese Justice Minister Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, "acted in concert" to have him detained, tortured and "threatened with indefinite imprisonment on false charges," according to the lawsuit, filed July 29 in federal court in Washington.

"I feared for my life from the day they captured me," Lewis, 48, said. He said he never confessed.

Congo's ambassador, Francois Balumuene, said in a statement Thursday that Lewis was detained because he did not have the proper work permit. He denied Lewis had been mistreated and called his lawsuit "unsubstantiated allegations."

There are plenty of security firms doing work there. Most of the work is related to the extractive industry. Other work focuses on ...solving regional problems. I personally know one guy who has done several rotation there.

UK Black Lives Matter Protesters Block Road To Europe's Busiest Airport
[Reuters] Ten people were arrested on Friday after protesters from the British arm of the "Black Lives Matter" movement blocked the main road to London's Heathrow Airport, police said.

Four people were in custody while the other six were being disentangled having locked themselves together across the five-lane slip road leading to the airport, causing traffic congestion at the Europe's busiest hub.

One lane of the road, a spur off a motorway which connects London to western England, remained closed at midday on Friday, police said, adding that the airport and road network were otherwise open and operating as normal.

Black Lives Matter started in the United States as a reaction to fatal shootings of black people by white U.S. police officers.

The British arm is protesting against what it says is a disproportionate number of black people among those who die in police custody in Britain.

"To be stuck in traffic is an irritation. To be denied justice for decades is a crisis," Black Lives Matter UK said on its Twitter feed.

Other demonstrations were being held in Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham on Friday to mark the anniversary of the death of Mark Duggan, whose shooting by police five years ago helped spark several days of rioting in Britain.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela's cash could run out 'within a year'
Venezuela is running out of money and time.

The country's central bank only has $11.9 billion in reserves, down sharply from $30 billion in 2011. A few large debt payments are coming due soon. Starting in October, Venezuela owes a total of $4.7 billion in a series of payments.

Venezuela is in the midst of a deep economic, political and humanitarian crisis. Its citizens are suffering from massive food shortages and hospitals lack basic medicine and equipment.

Experts say Venezuela has prioritized paying the debt over dealing with the shortages.

"Within a year they're going to run out of money," says Russ Dallen, an expert on Venezuela's debt and managing partner at Caracas Capital, an investing firm in Miami. Dallen pointed out that the country has been almost "suicidal" in its focus on making debt payments.

Experts agree that at this rate, Venezuela does not have enough reserves to make all its payments for the next two years.

Much of Venezuela's reserves are in gold, some of which the country has shipped to Switzerland this year to help repay its debts. As of May, Venezuela had $7.4 billion of its reserves in gold. However, it sent more gold in June, Swiss data shows.

"It doesn't seem that Venezuela is going to be able to make all payments for next year," says Mauro Roca, a Latin American economist at Goldman Sachs (GS). "The probability for default is much higher for next year than this year."

It is a dire situation and ironic for a country that sits on the world's largest oil reserves. It's true that oil prices have dropped dramatically and Venezuela hasn't been able to earn enough money for its oil. But whatever money Venezuela earns from its oil is going to pay down its debts to lenders like China, bondholders, oil drilling companies and importers.

Even oil drilling companies are starting to cut business in Venezuela. For instance, in April, Schlumberger said it would reduce operations in Venezuela due to unpaid bills. It's also one of the key reasons why the country's oil production has plunged to 13-year lows.

According to Bank of America (BAC), Venezuela's imports -- which include food and medicine -- declined between 40% and 45% in the first five months this year compared to the same time a year ago. (There isn't reliable government data on imports).

"It's a dramatic cut...they're making a big effort to pay the debt," says Sebastian Rondeau, an economist at Bank of America. He estimates that Venezuela can make debt payments until April of next year. "Then the second half of next year is going to be very complicated."

There is still a chance that Venezuela could default this year. Venezuelan officials are currently working with bondholders of the country's state-run oil company, PDVSA, to exchange short-term debt, which is due in October and November, with longer-term debt. If bondholders don't agree, it could be a problem.

"It would just kick the can further down the road...we still think the government is highly likely to default over the next two years, if not in the next six months," says Edward Glossop, an economist at Capital Economics, a research firm.

But China may be coming to Venezuela's rescue. China is reportedly in talks to give Venezuela a one-year grace period on repaying its debt and only make interest payments. Since 2007, China has loaned Venezuela $65 billion and Venezuela has been slowly repaying that via oil shipments.

Last year, Venezuela shipped 579,000 barrels of oil per day on average to China, an audited financial statement from the country's oil company shows. It appears China may now cut Venezuela some slack, so it can sell oil to bring in some money.

Regardless of a new debt deal or temporary relief from China, experts say Venezuela's current path isn't sustainable.

"It's like saying how long can you hold your breath under water?" says Dallen.

Samia died of unnatural causes: forensic report
[DAWN] GUJRAT: Samia Shahid -- a British citizen of Pak origin suspected of being a victim of honour killing -- did not die of natural causes, according to a forensic report.

Nabeela Ghazanfar, a spokesperson for Punjab’s inspector general of police, confirmed on Wednesday that the forensic report had described Ms Shahid’s death as unnatural as she had been "asphyxiated".

The spokesperson said the police inquiry team had carried out polygraph (lie-detector) tests on three main suspects. The reports of the tests had been attached to the forensic report, she added.

In the post-mortem report, Dr Sana of the district headquarters hospital, Jhelum, had mentioned that there was a bruise mark on the neck of the dear departed and a blood-stained froth was oozing from her mouth, which heightened suspicions that she might have been murdered.

Ms Shahid, who worked as a beauty therapist in Bradford, was previously married to her cousin Chaudhry Shakil, but she got a divorce and later married Syed Mukhtar Kazim of Taxila. The couple settled in Dubai.

Ms Shahid was asked by her mother to visit her ailing father, Chaudhry Shahid, in their native village of Pandoori, near Mangla in Jhelum district, where she arrived on July 14.

But on July 20 her father reported to the police that she had died of a heart attack. On July 23, her second husband filed a murder case with the Mangla police against five people -- her parents, her former husband, her sister and her cousin.

Later Ms Shahid’s father changed his statement and claimed that she had did away with himself.

Sources said that police had already detained the main suspects in the case -- Chaudhry Shahid, Chaudhry Shakil and Ms Shahid’s cousin Chaudhry Mobeen.

The remaining two nominated suspects, her mother Imtiaz Bibi and her sister Madeeha Shahid, are said to be in England and are yet to be interrogated.
