Nikki Haley to UN members: ‘We're taking names'
Finally
New US Ambassador Nikki Haley strutted into the UN on Friday with a blunt message to American allies: "For those who don't have our backs, we're taking names."

The former South Carolina governor made the remark to reporters as she arrived at the world body's headquarters in Manhattan to present her credentials to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"Our goal with the administration is to show value at the UN and the way that we'll show value is to show our strength, show our voice, have the backs of our allies and make sure that our allies have our back as well," she said.

"For those that don't have our back, we're taking names, we will make points to respond to that accordingly," President Trump's envoy said.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Trump To Hannity: ‘SNL,' Madonna, and ISIS Are Bad
Warning: This article written by a superior liberal who is butthurt because his cause lost the election despite the usual voter fraud. Expect lots of editorializing to numb the pain.
Sean Hannity looks at Donald Trump the way a golden retriever gazes at his master, with ardent longing and wet loyalty. The dog had his day on Thursday in an exclusive Second After David Muir And ABC News interview on Fox News's Hannity. When Trump said for the 500th time that the media is "hostile... angry... very dishonest," Hannity practically fell off his chair in his haste to give his assent: "I said journalism's dead, so we agree!" (Indeed, Hannity exists weeknights at 10 to prove its host's assertion.) A bit later, when the President brought up Iran, Sean chattered, "I actually agree with you wholeheartedly about the Iran deal." Going to a commercial, Hannity said, "Coming up, Donald Trump takes me inside the Oval Office" in a tone that made it sound as though his favorite uncle was about to sneak him onto the big-boy rollercoaster.

The hour-long interview was filled with Trump's uniquely revealing locutions. Talking about his recent speech at the CIA Memorial Wall: "I paid great homage to the wall with the stars," as though he was talking about a vertical version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. About the use of torture: "Waterboarding, I'm sure it's not pleasant." The Islamic State brought out the Jimmy Cagney in the President: "They're sneaky, dirty rats."

As always, the Commander in Chief is intensely interested in communicating to the American people his fervent positions on... show business figures. On Madonna and her loony women's-march comment about "blowing up the White House": "Honestly, she's disgusting, I think she hurt that whole..."‐his voice trailed off for just a second, so Hannity leapt in with the word "cause" just as Trump said, "...cause." See? They complete each other! Hannity also provided Trump with ample time to slap Saturday Night Live around. "It's a failing show, it's not funny. Alec Baldwin's a disaster, he's terrible on the show and, by the way, I don't mind some humor but it's terrible." Trump also brought up the unfunny, unkind tweet written by SNL writer Katie Rich, yet even here, Hannity sabotaged his own interview with incessant obsequiousness. Trump was summoning a mighty thunderbolt--"For them to attack, for NBC to attack my 10-year-old son..."--when Hannity cut in with, "He's a great kid, I met him!"

There have been reports that Trump gets his news primarily from Fox News. I guess this night Trump was sprawled in the White House, gazing at a TV screen and musing, "This guy playing the President is great, but who's this other guy who keeps interrupting? He's terrible! Very dishonest!"

ISIS airstrike limits in Iraq come under review; Mattis looks at Mosul
[Wash Times] Military advisers close to Defense Secretary James N. Mattis are considering loosening the restrictions on U.S. airstrikes that the Obama administration kept in place in war against the Islamic State in Iraq, according to current and former U.S. officials.

A key tenet of the proposed revised rules of engagement would raise the "acceptable" number of estimated collateral civilian casualties to authorize a U.S. or allied airstrike, sources say. Loosening these restrictions would give American commanders a freer hand in ordering strikes against the Islamic State’s northern Iraqi stronghold of Mosul, which the Trump White House has strongly advocated.

One source, who recently left a high-level position in the department, said Mr. Mattis’ team is believed to be carefully weighing the matter, with the expectation that the Trump White House would support such a move.

Another Pentagon official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Washington Times that the department has not formulated any specific plan, but could not rule out that such a high-level policy change was being considered.

"I can tell you that isn’t something that we are working on right now, but that’s not to say something like that won’t happen," the official said.

Yikes! Voter ID: Why the left fears POTUS new illegal voter investigation
[Front Page] Let's be honest.

The Democrats have been running on voter fraud for most of their history. The only reason that they have been fighting Voter ID tooth and nail is because they are protecting their voter fraud lifeline. And everyone knows it.

Majorities of both parties support Voter ID.

The Democrats protest that Voter ID is a plot to disenfranchise minority voters. But minority voters also support Voter ID. If the issue were the supposed difficulty of getting an ID, they could formulate a plan that would allow all their voters to get cards without too much trouble.

We have ID requirements for getting into bars, driving a car and buying cold medication. If you have to show ID while buying Sudafed, there's no logical argument against having to show an ID to vote.

Not one. The only argument against Voter ID is voter fraud.

The left is vocally arguing there were no illegal voters... and that Voter ID isn't needed. But if there are no illegal voters, why not have Voter ID?

The question answers itself. President Trump should champion an investigation. And the outcome should be a national system of Voter ID in national elections. This is what the left is terrified of. Why the left specifically? Because the left operates strongest in enclaves where voter fraud is prevalent.

Aside from some lefty towns and suburbs, they depend heavily on highly dubious vote counts in urban areas. It's time to end the debate, launch the investigation and usher in an age of legitimate voting.

#1  The POTUS voting remedy may extend far beyond the demand for a valid ID. It may include computer assisted IRS or DMV address verification cross-reference, early voting and voting by mail (so-called absentee) limitations, Biometric ID verification, and an overhaul of military voting procedures.
Posted by: Besoeker || 01/27/2017 6:25 Comments || Top||

#2  do it now President Trump while you have momentum. Issue compulsory photo IDs - and you must show 100 points of ID to get one. That means a passport + a driver's license or other id.

i wouldn't be averse to finger print and iris scans also!

they can digitise registrations while still using paper ballots to keep the vote a matter of pen and paper.

so you enter the voting booth only once you've had your ID scanned (and cross checked that you've only entered once across the country)

and then you get issued your paper ballot.

Don't forget to dip your pinky finger into the purple ink as you deposit your ballot.

#3  Ditto anon1. I was heartened to learn the POTUS 'extreme vetting' of folks coming to the U.S. would include 'BIOMETRIC identification procedures.'

A bit more here on the Army 'BATS and HIIDES' Biometrics Automated Toolset (BAT), Handheld Interagency Identity Detection Equipment (HIIDE) and Secure Electronic Enrollment Kit (SEEK).

Any individual hajji objections to BATS and HIIDES were immediately held suspect in Afghanistan. Objections here could simply be returned to country of origin, provided they were not on some sort of international 'wanted list.'

#4  do it now President Trump while you have momentum.

I've heard this a lot lately, and while I agree with the sentiment I hope everyone realizes that there is an awful lot on his plate and going too fast can cause a tremendous crash.

When your running the Nurburgring you go as fast as you can on the straights but you have to slow down on the curves.

#5  Remember to include the escape clause, those failing to provide voter ID will be given a ballot to cast, but held for proper validation (after the election day if the margin of difference is greater than the number of votes awaiting validation). Thus, they are not denied the vote but are still required to authenticate. Make the judiciary happy.

#8  The 'escape clause' (#5) in Texas is called the Provisional Ballot. When I came back to Texas and did not register soon enough, Mrs. Bobby walked in for some local election and the nice ladies practically insisted I vote provisionally. They explained the vote would be held until my registration was confirmed. That was four years ago.

Probably too icky for California, coming from Texas, and all that.
Posted by: Bobby || 01/27/2017 7:58 Comments || Top||

#9  Because they do not want it solved. The GOPe are basically cowards. When the Dems and the Media (redundant) start calling them racist or other names, they curl up and suck their thumbs. Trump and his appointees are not cowards.

I think the Tea Partiers have a lot more work to do, they need to work on purging the old guard from all the districts. Full turnover.

#16  Since we are talking about actual change, and not just political band aids, how about dumping the registrations every 4 years after the presidential election. If you want to vote, then you have to re-register every 4 years.
Posted by: Iblis || 01/27/2017 10:37 Comments || Top||

#17  a major problem is that in a number of states, election day registration is allowed and then the person registered may vote at once

there is no way to check information in time and in most states the 'same day registered' votes are not provisional so you can't check after the election either

#21  As a Judge of Elections since Clinton II, I have found that 80% of voters first show me their Drivers License. Most are incensed when I tell them we cannot look at them, only take their word for who they are. Oh, there are 175 "voters" out of 450 in my precinct that no one has ever seen since they "vote early".
Posted by: Jumbo Elmilet3928 || 01/27/2017 11:55 Comments || Top||

#22  Per that 'Trump Argument Bolstered' story...

Based on national polling by a consortium of universities, a report by Mr. Richman said 6.4 percent of the estimated 20 million adult noncitizens in the U.S. voted in November. He extrapolated that that percentage would have added 834,381 net votes for Mrs. Clinton, who received about 2.8 million more votes than Mr. Trump.

Its based on polling. I wonder if the question was something like this:

"Will you admit to comitting Voter Fraud, which is a felony by the way, by voting when you are a non-citizen?"

And 800K of 2.8M is about 28% - nothing to laugh at.
Posted by: CrazyFool || 01/27/2017 12:04 Comments || Top||

#23  The left is vocally arguing there were no illegal voters

Then the left should welcome the idea that they might actually be proven right once.

AFAIAC, we have a chance to secure both the borders and the elections this cycle. Both are about equally important.

Posted by: Betty Henbane3370 || 01/27/2017 13:25 Comments || Top||

#25  Bobby - "Which would be sad. But accurate."

It's only sad if you assume that having more votes in and of itself yields a better result. Personally, if they can't be bothered to register once every 4 years, I'm not sure I'm interested in their participation at the ballot.
Posted by: Iblis || 01/27/2017 15:38 Comments || Top||

#26  Agree. It's sad how little so many people care.

Maybe if Trump can make things happen, more will be interested. If the media is still around to allow it.

San Bernardino massacre yields second immigration fraud conviction
[Reuters] The Russian-born wife of the California man accused of supplying guns used by another couple who killed 14 people in San Bernardino pleaded guilty on Thursday to federal immigration fraud charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Sixteen years on and nothing at all learned from 9/11 ?
Mariya Chernykh, 26, became the second person convicted in an immigration fraud scheme linked to the December 2015 massacre by Syed Rizwan Farook and his Pakistani-born wife, Tashfeen Malik, who authorities said were inspired by Islamic extremism.

The man she admitted paying to marry her, Enrique Marquez Jr., is charged with furnishing two assault rifles used in the shooting rampage by Farook, a U.S. native of Pakistani descent, and Malik, whom he married in 2014 in Saudi Arabia.

The couple were killed in a gunfight with police four hours after the massacre.

Marquez also is accused of having plotted with Farook to stage similar shooting attacks in the suburbs east of Los Angeles in 2011 and 2012 that were never carried out. He is scheduled to go on trial on Sept. 26.

Farook's brother, Syed Raheel Farook, 31, pled guilty to a single count of conspiracy to commit fraud earlier this month, admitting that he lied on immigration forms that paved the way for Chernykh, his wife's sister, to engage in a fraudulent marriage to Marquez.

Chernykh, a Russian citizen, pled guilty to charges of conspiracy, perjury and making false statements, and now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine when she is sentenced in November, according to a statement by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles. Her would-be brother-in-law, Raheel Farook, could receive up to five years in prison.

His wife, Tatiana Farook, a third defendant in the immigration fraud case, is slated to go on trial in March.

The slaying of Rizwan's Farook's co-workers at a holiday office party on Dec. 2, 20015, ranks as one of the deadliest attacks by Islamist militants in the United States since the Sept. 11, 2001, al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington.

In addition to acknowledging in court on Thursday that she falsified immigration documents and paid Marquez to participate in the sham marriage, Chernykh admitted making false statements to federal investigators in the immediate aftermath of the San Bernardino attack, authorities said.

Four more journalists get felony charges after covering inauguration unrest
[Guardian] A documentary producer, a photojournalist, a live-streamer and a freelance reporter facing up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted.

Four more journalists have been charged with felonies after being arrested while covering the unrest around Donald Trump’s inauguration, meaning that at least six media workers are facing up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted.

A documentary producer, a photojournalist, a live-streamer and a freelance reporter were each charged with the most serious level of offense under Washington DC’s law against rioting, after being caught up in the police action against demonstrators.

The Guardian learned of their arrests after reporting on Monday that the journalists Evan Engel of Vocativ and Alex Rubinstein of RT America had also been arrested and charged with felonies while covering the same unrest on Friday morning.

His Eminence Cardinal Timothy Dolan on the ‘Culture of Death'
[Breitbart] His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, archbishop of New York, was a guest on Thursday’s Breitbart News Daily on SiriusXM, where he offered a preview of his speech for the upcoming March for Life in Washington, D.C.

"The pro-life march in Washington, which usually occurs on January 22 ‐ which is the somber anniversary of Roe v. Wade in 1973 ‐ this year, as you know Alex, it got pushed back because of all the celebrations of the inaugural," he told SiriusXM host Alex Marlow. "So we’re doing it tomorrow, uniquely, this year."

"This has been going on since 1974 and, classically, Alex, can get up to half-a-million people," he noted, adding that despite its enormous size, it "never receives any coverage."

"I was thinking of that last week, last Saturday, with the women’s march throughout the nation, which undeniably got a lot of attention," he said. "I thought, wow, we bring in hundreds and hundreds of thousands annually, at the coldest time of the year in Washington, D.C., with people coming from all over the country, and it doesn’t get much attention."

"This gives us a lot of hope, Alex," Cardinal Dolan said. "Every year, we get more and more people. Every year, we get younger people, who seem to just know in their gut that something is wrong with the culture of death that has gripped our beloved country, that was built upon the inalienable right to life. Every year, you’ve got more and more people that stand up ‐ as Jews, as Christians, as men and women of no religion, or any religion at all."

"Most of all, though, as Americans who want to reclaim the constitutional right to the sacredness of life. and the dignity of the human person, and to reclaim the constitutional rights that everybody, the civil rights especially, of the most fragile, innocent form of life now under attack ‐ namely the baby in the womb," he said.

De Blasio Suggests NYC Won't Help Deport Thieves & Drug Users, Because They're Family ‘Breadwinners' (Video)
[GP] On Thursday morning Democratic Mayor Bill De Blasio went on CNN to discuss how he is going to comply with ICE in certain circumstances.

From Legal Insurrection:

If this weren’t so infuriating, it might be funny . . . Appearing on CNN this morning to discuss President Trump’s plan to cut funds to sanctuary cities, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio implied that the city will not cooperate in the deportation of thieves who don’t use violence because they might be the "breadwinners" of their families.

Here is part of the Transcript:

CAMEROTA: How about theft?

DE BLASIO: Well here’s an example. Theft, violent, any theft involving a weapon, for example --

CAMEROTA: Not violent. Just a regular, low-level crime.

DE BLASIO: There are very low-level crimes, for example, small amounts of marijuana possession. Going through a stoplight that doesn’t cause any damage to anyone. Those are areas where we will not work to see someone deported. Why? Because these are members of a family in our community, say it’s the breadwinner in that family. So you deport the breadwinner and the rest of the family, including the children, are left without anyone. You tear a family apart. That’s not good government. That’s not in my view moral.

OK, lets talk morals. Any murder committed by an illegal against a citizen PERMANENTLY tears that victim's innocent family apart. Any public official that knowingly allowed that illegal to remain in their district prior to (or after) the crime - their conduct rises to the level of criminal negligence, and in no way represents good, moral government.

Florida Mayor Orders End to Sanctuary City Policy
[Breitbart] Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez has instructed county jails to comply with all federal immigration detainer requests on Thursday, only one day after President Donald Trump issued an executive order to cut federal funding from sanctuary cities.

In 2016, the county ignored approximately 100 detainer requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which would have cost the county about $52,000 to implement, according to the Miami Herald.

According to a report from the non-partisan Center for Immigration Studies, Miami-Dade County refused to honor 771 detainer requests from January 1, 2014, to September 30, 2015. That’s at least 871 illegal aliens allowed to remain in the U.S., including 575 with criminal records.

The mayor decided it made no financial sense to risk losing $355 million in federal funding during 2017 to protect illegal aliens with criminal records.

Nothing personal, purely a business decision.

Madeleine Albright and Big Bang actress 'ready to join Muslim registry'
[BBC] A former US Secretary of State and a Big Bang Theory actress have both vowed to register as Muslim if Donald Trump creates a database of Muslim Americans.
Ah, yes. Making a splashy show of doing something that presents no danger to herself and costs no money. Good idea. Sign me up too.
Politician Madeleine Albright and Mayim Bialik said they "stand ready" to register, in defiance of the new President.

"I was raised Catholic, became Episcopalian & found out later my family was Jewish," Ms Albright - the first woman to be named Secretary of State - tweeted on Wednesday. "I stand ready to register as Muslim in #solidarity." The tweet gained tens of thousands of likes.
But she's not a Moslem so she's not allowed to.
Her comments come as rumours continue to circulate about an executive order which would announce extreme vetting, a refugee ban and a ban on arrivals from seven countries, said to include Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

But there has been no mention of a register of American Muslims in recent months - something Mr Trump said he would "certainly implement" in an interview in 2015, but later distanced himself from.
Blossom Unains5562 submitted another article on the same story, commenting:
Sort of a no-risk strategy for news-whoring:

1. A hijab would only make her look better
2. No Imam would ever attempt to give her a clitorectomy.

#5  ...I suppose that it would be impolite of me to point out that if such a thing were done,:

1: Said database would be put together from existing data and data from incoming people (which we already collect as a matter of course - Ms Albright's family provided it when they came here). So a Tweet going out to direct all Muslims to register - and these morons deciding to register as Muslims to Signal Virtue(TM) - ain't gonna happen.

2: Providing false information on a Government form is a crime under 18 U.S.C. § 1001(a). Damned few people get hit with it, but President Trump is the one guy who might push it. There is no exemption under said act for 'free speech', 'resistance', or any other cockamamie excuse these people might come up with. A few loudmouths signalling virtue at a Federal penitentary for a few years might change their minds.

Elders set to intervene in Galmudug political crises
Elders
Whew! Thank goodness the Elders are stepping up!
hailing from Galmudug state have held a meeting in Mogadishu on Thursday to discuss the standoff between Galmudug parliament and president Abdikarim Hussein Guled. Mohamed Hassan Haad, a prominent Elder attended Thursday’s meeting in Mogadishu said they will travel to Adado city, and hold talks with the MPs and Guled to discuss the standoff.

“It is unacceptable and misfortune the ongoing deadlock in Galmudug over the leadership. We, as elders will leave no stone unturned to seek solution for the crises in Adado,” he said.

He urged Galmudug state leaders to end their differences through peaceful dialogue and avoid any kind of violence that could annihilate the newly established fragile administration.

The standoff emerged after several Galmudug lawmakers have lodged a controversial no confidence motion against the current elected president HE Abdikarim Hussein Guled. The president and parliament speaker have similarly dismissed the motion by the MPs, and termed it as “illegitimate”, and against to the state’s constitution.

#5  The argument for maquiladoras was that if Mexicans could get jobs in Mexico they wouldn't come here. Nobody stopped to think that, either way, they are taking jobs from Americans. You could counter argue that with the fact that a lot of American labor unions demand more pay for their workers than the workers are worth. The best bet would be to bring these jobs back to right to work states.

Media Matters Says It Is Secretly Working with Facebook to Fight ‘Fake News’
But don't tell nobody. It's a secret.
[FREEBEACON] Left-wing advocacy group Media Matters for America has been quietly working with social media giant Facebook to combat what the group describes as "propaganda" and "fake news," internal documents reveal.

Media Matters told current and prospective donors at a retreat in Florida over the weekend that it has been in discussions with Facebook leadership about their policies on inaccurate and partisan news stories on the website that many liberals blame for political losses last year.

"We’ve been engaging with Facebook leadership behind the scenes to share our expertise and offer input on developing meaningful solutions," the group said in a briefing book obtained by the Washington Free Beacon at the conference.

"Media Matters will serve as their partner," the group said of its work with Facebook and other social media companies.

Conservatives have argued in the past that Facebook intentionally marginalizes right-leaning voices, a theory that could be fueled by the social media network’s ties to Media Matters, among the harshest critics of conservative figures and ideas.

Suspected Emirati spy dies in jail
UAE cleaning up
An Emirati man accused of being a spy has been murdered while being held in detention in Tripol. Attorney General Sadiq Al-Sour has announced. Yousef Mubarek, a former police sergeant in Dubai, was apparently by a member of Libyan intelligence who was then himself killed by prison guards.
That's a story line worthy of the RAB...
One report suggests that the Libyan intelligence member was killed as he stormed the detention centre where Yousef Mubarek, a former police sergeant in Dubai, was being held. Al-Sour has said another prison guard believed to have being involved in the murder is also being investigated.

Other reports, though, suggest that the Emirati was killed during an abortive attempt to escape.
That's a bit more of a pedestrian prison story, not that it can't be told well...
Mubarek was arrested in November 2015 by Libya Dawn officials at Tripoli’s Mitiga airport while trying to leave for Tunis. He was then accused of espionage after videos of a number of embassies in Tripoli were supposedly found on his computer.

A trial had still been pending.

There has been no comment from the UAE.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Europe not best option for Israeli gas export
Israel appears to have enough gas to sell to Europe, but there are problems with the route, Bruce Pannier, US expert on Central Asia and energy issues, told Trend Jan.26.

“The Leviathan field, the biggest of several Israeli offshore fields, is estimated to contain at least 470 billion cubic meters of gas and is due to start production by 2019, and Israel already supplies about half of its electricity needs from the much smaller Tamar field. So, Israel will have extra gas to sell,” said the expert.

Nevertheless, Israel’s problem selling gas to Europe would be lack of a clear route, Pannier believes.

“The distance from Israel’s offshore fields to the Turkish mainland, and then on to Europe, would be an obstacle to building an underwater pipeline, not to mention the legal problems that could arise from other Mediterranean countries in the area – Lebanon, Syria, and Cyprus -- that might be concerned about environmental consequences,” he said.

Moreover, the expert pointed out that a land pipeline to Europe would have to cross Syria at some point and given the current situation in Syria, such a project does not seem possible at this time.
Good point...
Israel might be able to sell liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Europe, but that would require time to construct the necessary facilities to liquefy the gas and build the port terminal facilities to load LNG, said Pannier.
And the expense is substantial.
The expert believes that a better bet for Israeli gas exports in the near future would be to Egypt and Jordan.

“Europe, like so many regions in the world, is anxious to diversify its sources for gas imports and would probably be glad for an opportunity to include Israeli gas. But as I mentioned, there is no good way to get Israeli gas to Europe at the moment, excepting the LNG option,” he added.

Earlier, senior officials from Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Israel agreed to advance talks on a pipeline from Israel to Europe after an EU-sponsored study showed the project would be very feasible.

The study showed the pipeline, which would traverse Cyprus and Greece before reaching Italy, would cost about 5 billion euros ($5.5 billion).

A pipeline to Greece would have to go deep underwater and would be the world’s longest undersea connection, said Israel’s Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz. He said that the idea of exporting gas to Turkey, with which Israel has held talks about a pipeline, is still on the table.

“This would not be instead of Turkey,” he said. “I’ve always said we need at least two pipelines.”

Trump creates name-and-shame list to embarrass sanctuary cities
[WASHINGTONTIMES] President Trump on Wednesday ordered the Homeland Security Department to begin releasing a name-and-shame list of sanctuary cities, listing the specific crimes such as murder or robbery committed by those who have been released back into their communities under the sanctuary policies.

That was one of a number of less-noticed but potentially far-reaching moves tucked inside two new executive orders erasing decades of previous immigration enforcement policy and replacing it with the Trump plan, which calls for aggressive enforcement of existing laws.

Border Patrol and interior enforcement agents have been unshackled from the limits imposed by former President Barack Obama
They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them...
, as Mr. Trump said he wants to see them doing the jobs they were hired for.

He said he wants to enlist those local police and sheriff’s offices that are eager to enforce immigration law, and will punish those that throw up roadblocks -- including the new name-and-shame list.

Some 279 cities and counties refused to cooperate on at least some deportations in 2016, accounting for 2,008 immigrants colonists who were shielded, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Each of those immigrants colonists’ convictions will now be publicly listed so residents can see the level of crimes committed by those released into their communities, under the Trump orders.

Analysts said that list could help rally internal opposition to sanctuary cities, which are already rallying to defy Mr. Trump.

EPA staff experiencing stress and fears Trump will suppress climate science
[Guardian] Environmental Protection Agency spokesman says employees are anxious after Trump team placed a hold on the release of work and edited website.

Fears that Donald Trump’s presidency will suppress climate science at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are causing widespread unease, with a spokesman for the administration admitting staff are experiencing "tension and stress" over the transition.

According to the Associated Press, Trump’s team has placed a "temporary hold" on the release of work by EPA scientists, pending review by political appointees. The report sparked outrage among climate activists and some scientists who claimed climate science was in danger of being distorted by the new administration.

The administration was also reportedly poised to remove all mentions of climate change from the EPA website, only to back away from the idea. The White House website has already had all of its climate sections excised.

Greek top court rejects extradition of Turkish coup plotter soldiers
The Supreme Court of Greece on Jan. 26 rejected the extradition of eight Turkish soldiers who sought political asylum there after the failed July 2016 coup attempt, while issuing an arrest warrant in absentia, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency has reported. In addition, the court ordered that the officers – two commanders, four captains and two sergeants – be released from police custody.

The soldiers, who had previously and correctly stated that their life would be in jeopardy once extradited, will now await decisions on their asylum requests in the country.

Meanwhile, Zeki Arıtürk, a lawyer registered to the Istanbul Bar Association, told daily Hürriyet that the decision was final in legal terms while noting that the Greek Justice Ministry would have the last word as it could also extradite the soldiers.

The announcement of the final verdict had originally been slated for Jan. 23 but was later postponed to Jan. 26 when one of the judges had an accident while the other two did not convey a particular opinion on the soldiers’ extradition.

The decision came on the same day as senior Turkish and Greek diplomats gathered in Ankara to hold political consultations on bilateral ties.

The soldiers, including two majors, flew their helicopters to Alexandroupolis on July 16, 2016, prompting Greek authorities to begin legal and diplomatic processes on charges of illegal entry into the country.

In late July, a local Greek court sentenced the eight soldiers to two-month suspended prison terms for illegally entering the country. The case was then taken to the Greek top court after previous decisions to extradite three soldiers and not extradite the other five were contested.

Ankara had repeatedly demanded the swift extradition of the soldiers as the case had exposed often tense relations between Athens and Ankara, NATO allies at odds over issues from Cyprus to islets and air rights over the Aegean.

Two ISIL emirs captured in northern Syria, brought to Turkey
Turkish special forces have captured two regional leaders of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), referred to as “emirs,” in the Syrian town of al-Bab, while Turkish air strikes as part of the Euphrates Shield Operation have killed 17 other “emirs” in the same town.

The captures came as Turkish special forces recently conducted a number of operations to capture ISIL emirs alive, Turkish military sources told daily Hürriyet.

The first captured emir was the person who ordered the Jan. 20 car bomb attack on Turkish soldiers fighting alongside Ankara-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels during which five Turkish troops were killed and nine others were wounded, sources said.

They added that the second emir was captured in another operation on Jan. 24 in al-Bab.

The two high-ranking leaders were also separately brought to Turkey to be interrogated especially regarding ISIL terrorists, weapons depots in al-Bab, and their contacts in ISIL’s de facto capital Raqqa.

The special forces acted upon intelligence that around 300 emirs were sent into al-Bab, especially from Raqqa and its surrounding area.

Turkish jets also conducted air strikes on a building where most of these emirs were staying and killed 17 of them, sources said.

Nork Security Conscript in Custody After Killing 7 Colleagues
A young North Korean man conscripted to guard a customs post on his country's border with China in under arrest for shooting dead seven platoon members who had angered him with bullying treatment, RFA’s Korean Service has learned.

After the shootings at dawn on Jan. 7 at Hyesan, a city in North Korea’s northern Yanggang province, the young conscript was arrested and taken to Pyongyang, sources familiar with the shooting told RFA.

“The suspect and one platoon member who survived the shooting were transported to State Security headquarters in Pyongyang. There is no way to find out the exact cause of this incident, since the Yanggang authorities are trying to keep everyone’s mouth shut,” one source said on Jan. 14.

A second source, however, said the shooter apparently snapped after suffering bullying from his colleagues.

“The incident at the Hyesan customs office was caused by the frequent beatings suffered by the new conscripts at the hands of their superiors, and the one who committed the crime is a new conscript who graduated from high school last spring,” the source told RFA on Jan. 16.

North Korean authorities are trying to prevent the information from spreading to other parts of the country, the sources said.

No other information was immediately available about the shooting in Hyesan, a provincial administrative center of nearly 200,000 people that lies on the Yalu River, which forms North Korea’s border with China.

LNA fingered for Italian embassy bombing
TRIPOLI: A counter-terrorism unit in the Libyan capital Tripoli said it suspected Saturday’s car bomb near the recently reopened Italian Embassy was planted by backers of the powerful Libyan National Army (LNA) based in the eastern part of the divided country.

The blast occurred in central Tripoli about 350 meters from the Italian Embassy. The bodies of two men were recovered from the wreckage of the car.

Tripoli’s Special Deterrence Force said in a statement released late on Wednesday that the men had been trying to target the embassy, but had been prevented from parking their car near the embassy compound’s walls.

Tripoli is home to myriad of armed groups with shifting and conflicting loyalties.

In 2014 fighting between armed alliances backing opposing political factions resulted in rival governments being set up in Tripoli and the east.

Since March last year a third, UN-backed government has been trying to establish itself in the capital, but it has been unable to win support from groups in the east aligned with the government there and with the eastern-based LNA.

The LNA has made significant gains over the past year in its “Operation Dignity” campaign against opponents in the eastern city of Benghazi, and has pushed west to control key oil facilities. It has said it is preparing to “liberate” Tripoli.

Many doubt it has the capacity to do so, but the claim has led to speculation that it is trying to lay the ground for a military takeover.

“According to the investigations the perpetrators of the terrorist act are connected with what is known as Operation Dignity, but it’s still unclear if it was an individual act or on Operation Dignity’s orders,” Rada said in its statement.

“This terrorist act is a result of political conflict between east and west and aims to show the capital as unsafe.”

It gave the names of the two suspects whose bodies had been found in the car, naming a third suspect who it said was still at large.
There was no immediate response from eastern officials.

British paper lists N.K. as one of 10 most dangerous nations
A British daily recently put North Korea on the list of the world's 10 most dangerous countries to avoid this year, citing its various human rights violations.

The nine other countries are Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, said the Daily Express. The daily drew up the list based on the Global Peace Index (GPI), annually compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a global think tank based in Sydney.

"North Korea is listed as the least peaceful country in the Asia-Pacific area on the GPI," the daily said in its Jan. 18 edition.

The daily said, citing Amnesty International's 2016 report, "North Koreans continued to suffer denial and violations of almost every aspect of their human rights."

"Authorities continue to arbitrarily arrest and detain individuals without fair trial or access to lawyers and family, including nationals of South Korea," it said.

Little progress has been made in addressing cases of abductions and enforced disappearances of foreign nationals, it said.

Launched in 2007, the GPI measures each nation's peacefulness by gauging the levels of 23 factors such as violence, crime, military expenditures and wars.

Israel okays 153 homes in East Jerusalem neighborhood Gilo
[IsraelTimes] Announcement comes 2 days after over 2,500 settlements housing units approved throughout the West Bank.

Israeli officials on Thursday gave final approval to build 153 housing units in East Jerusalem, two days after approving construction for some 2,500 homes in the West Bank, most in existing settlement blocs Israel hopes to keep in any peace deal with the Paleostinians.

Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Meir Turgeman told AFP the approvals by a city planning committee for homes in the neighborhood of Gilo were among those held up due to US pressure during Barack Obama
My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it...
’s presidential term.

On Sunday, a Jerusalem planning committee approved the construction of 566 housing units in East Jerusalem, in the neighborhoods of Ramot, Ramat Shlomo and Pisgat Ze’ev, on the heels of a phone conversation earlier that day between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, in which the two discussed their plans for the region.

The almost week-old Trump administration has so far remained silent on Israel’s construction plans -- announcements that likely would have earned Israel a sharp rebuke from the previous administration. Germany and, to Israel’s surprise, Australia issued statements condemning the announcement Sunday. A UN Security Council meeting over the plans on Wednesday yielded no decision.

Following Trump’s inauguration last Friday, Turgeman spoke of plans for some 11,000 homes in process for annexed East Jerusalem, captured by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War.

"I’m going to deliver permits for thousands of homes in Jerusalem in the coming months," Turgeman said.

was sentenced to six years in juvenile detention for stabbing and severely wounding a German police officer last February, ending the country’s first trial of an attacker accused of drawing inspiration from the Death Eater group.

The 16-year-old girl, identified as Safia S., was found guilty of attempted murder, aggravated assault and supporting a foreign terrorist organization, the regional court in Celle that heard the case said.

Thursday’s sentence is substantially tougher than those handed down in recent terror-related trials, which have targeted unsuccessful plotters, members of designated terrorist organizations or people who had fought alongside such groups in Syria or Iraq before returning to Germany.

The trial of Safia S., who was 15 when she stabbed a federal policeman in the neck, was seen as a test of Germany’s ability to address the growing number of radicalized children and youth in its large Moslem community.

Juvenile law in Germany emphasizes the reintegration of youth offenders back into society and gives judges wide leeway in sentencing. While the sentence handed down to Safia S. was lengthy, it fell within the judge’s discretion, said Nikolaos Gazeas, a Cologne

Yemen’s Rebels Seize 3 Trucks Carrying Aid to Al-Bayda
The Minister of Local Administration and the Chairman of the Higher Committee for Relief Sergeant Abdul Raqeeb Fath held Houthi militias and those loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh responsible for seizing three trucks loaded with humanitarian aid and relief belonging to the World Food Programme.

According to the Yemeni news agency SABA, the minister accused the “Houthi militias of seizing three trucks loaded with humanitarian, food and medical aid that were on their way to the governorate of Al-Bayda and that had been allocated to the district of Dhi Na’im. He demanded that the World Food Programme take a clear stance against the inhumane actions carried out by the militia including detaining and seizing aid convoys and trucks that were intended for needy people in governorates that are under their control. He also called on international organisations, especially those that are part of the UN, to put pressure on the militias to stop such actions.

Fath also stressed that these Houthi militias “with these immoral acts, are further complicating the humanitarian situation in the governorates that are under the control of the militias and increasing the proportion of famine and the outbreak of diseases.” He requested that the aid be released and that it reaches its intended recipients.

There have been violent clashes between the Houthi militias and the Yemeni army on the Nahum front, east Sanaa, after the army made advances and seized strategic and important sites with the support of Arab coalition aircraft.

[AlAhram] Egyptian authorities will open the Rafah border crossing with Gazoo on Saturday for four days to allow the passage of humanitarian aid, state news agency MENA announced Thursday evening.

The crossing in northern Sinai, which will be opened for traffic in both directions, is the only way for 1.8 million Paleostinians living in Gazoo to enter and exit the strip.

Gazoo has been under Israeli siege since 2006.

Since October 2014, the crossing has been closed by Egyptian authorities due to security concerns, though Cairo periodically opens the border temporarily to allow civilians with foreign passports, Paleostinian students, and those with medical needs to travel back and forth.

The crossing was last opened temporarily in mid December 2016.

Libyan militia group looting in Sirte
Tribal elders in Sirte have accused Bunyan Marsous forces, which are supposed to be keeping order in the town, of looting and seizing local properties.

They also claim soldiers allied to BM have prevented Sirte residents from returning home by blocking the town’s entrance with sand barriers. They also say the BM men are stealing electricity cabling, thus producing power cuts as the town struggles to get back on its feet.

Sirte has only one local militia, the 604 Brigade, which last week accused Islamist forces of trying to assert control over the area.

Sirte’s mayor, Mukhtar Al-Madani, has continued to press the Presidency Council to compensate people whose homes were damaged in the fighting to retake the town from IS. In the Ghiza district ,where the terrorists made their final stand, virtually every building was destroyed.

Last week Madani accused the PC of a complete lack of interest in the town and begged for help to remove the unexploded ordinance that still litters it.

Sirte was badly damaged in 2011 because Qaddafi chose to make his own last stand there. Some 8,000 homes needed rebuilding at a cost of around $500 million. Now the town has been severely damaged all over again. Moreover there are widespread shortages, particularly of fuel

This month, the PC allotted $7.6 million to help reopen Sirte’s main hospital, the Ibn Sina. A GNA official working on the Sirte crisis was quoted by Tripoli-based LANA as saying that petrol supplies were gradually being restored to the town. He did however admit that there were power problems but insisted that electricity engineers were hoping to fix the problems in the coming days.

Syrian rebels groups find common cause amongst other groups
Syrian rebel group Ahrar al-Sham announced Thursday that at least six rebel factions had joined its ranks in northwestern Syria in order to counter a major assault by a powerful extremist group.

Ahrar al-Sham, which presents itself as a mainstream rebel group, sided with the FSA groups. It said that any attack on its members of was tantamount to a “declaration of war”.

Rebel factions Alwiyat Suqour al-Sham, Fastaqim, Jaish al-Islam’s Idlib branch, Jaish al-Mujahideen and al-Jabha al-Shamiya’s west Aleppo branch said in a statement they had joined Ahrar al-Sham.

The Ahrar al-Sham statement also mentioned a sixth group, the Sham Revolutionary Brigades, and said “other brigades” had joined.

On the other hand, a deal struck in October for Syria to buy one million tons of wheat from its ally Russia to prevent bread shortages in regime-held areas has not been fulfilled and may never be, Russian authority sources told Reuters.

A source at Russia’s agriculture ministry told Reuters he did not think the contract would ever be fulfilled because the company that won it, Zernomir, could not source the wheat at the agreed price, which was too low.

The contract was awarded at 150 euros ($161.37) a ton, on a cost and freight basis. That compares with the Black Sea price of $185 per tonne on a free-on-board basis (before adding the cost of freight) for Russian wheat with 12.5 percent protein for February supply quoted at the end of last week, according to Russian agricultural consultancy IKAR.

A Syrian regime official with knowledge of the deal said a final contract had still not been agreed and blamed bureaucratic delays, but added that there were no shortages.

An official at Russia’s agriculture ministry said the core problem was that the little-known firm that won the tender lacked experience and set the price too low.

Syrian buyer Hoboob set three separate tenders to buy an unprecedented 1.35 million tons of wheat last year, after continued fighting from the country’s nearly six-year war and poor rainfall halved the nation’s harvest to 1.3 million tons, the lowest in 27 years.

Arabia
Yemen rebels cornered in Mokha
ADEN: Yemeni rebels are putting up fierce resistance in a key Red Sea port city where they are encircled by pro-government forces, military and health officials said on Thursday.

Deadly clashes have shaken Mokha since loyalist fighters launched an offensive nearly three weeks ago to oust the Iran-backed Houthi insurgents and their allies from Yemen’s southwestern coast.

Fresh fighting has left 20 rebels and seven pro-government fighters dead over the past 24 hours, with dozens more wounded, a hospital official said.

“The city center is still in the hands of the Houthis, while the loyalist forces have taken up positions on three axes around the city and cut off the rebels’ supply route between Mokha and Taiz” further east, a military official said.

He said the rebels had “no choice” but to leave Mokha and head toward the rebel stronghold of Hodeida further north on the Red Sea coast.

The forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi are supported by Saudi-led coalition aircraft that have attacked a military camp and a rebel convoy in the past 24 hours, the military official said.

Nearly 230 rebel and loyalist fighters have been killed since Hadi’s forces launched a vast offensive on Jan. 7 to drive the Houthis from Yemen’s southwestern coast.

Pro-government forces have succeeded in recapturing the Dhubab district north of the Bab Al-Mandab strait, a key maritime route connecting the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Loyalist forces said on Monday they had also captured the port in Mokha, but rebels are still holed up inside the city.

Aided by troops loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Houthis overran the capital Sanaa in September 2014 and advanced on other regions of the impoverished Arabian Peninsula nation.

The World Health Organization says more than 7,400 people have been killed since the coalition launched its intervention in support of Hadi in March 2015.

Draining the Swamp: Trump Fires Border Patrol Chief
Pass da popcorn!
The Department of Homeland Security has asked U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mark Morgan, a former longtime Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, to step down from his post.

News of his departure, expected within a month, comes as the Trump administration moves toward tougher enforcement of immigration laws.

Two sources familiar with Morgan's departure told Reuters that he held a morning phone call with employees to say that he was not resigning ‐ but had been asked to leave by the Trump administration.

Morgan's ouster also comes the day after President Donald Trump announced a broad plan to crack down on border security, including directing the construction of a wall along the border with Mexico.

The border patrol union, which endorsed Trump's presidential campaign and applauded his executive order, had been critical of Morgan. The union criticized Morgan for supporting former President Barack Obama's plans to shield certain illegal immigrants from deportation through a White House-driven amnesty.

The executive board of the National Border Patrol Council called Morgan arrogant and a 'disgrace to the Border Patrol' in an opinion piece published by Breitbart.com on Nov. 30.

Unlike many border patrol officers, Morgan did not climb the chain of command within the agency but was appointed from the FBI.

Morgan was named to the post in June and took office in October. The former FBI agent briefly led the internal affairs department at the Border Patrol's parent agency before heading the agency of roughly 20,000 agents.

In a statement, Kevin McAleenan, the Customs and Border Protection's acting commissioner, praised Morgan for 'his unwavering dedication to our border security mission' and 'lifelong career in service to the nation.'

Morgan was the first outsider to lead the agency since its founding in 1924. He clashed with rank-and-file officers in the Trump-friendly union from the start.

Boko Haram Terrorists Kill 3 People in Nigeria
[al-Manar] Boko Haram extremists raided a village in northeast Nigeria earlier this week, killing three men and abducting seven women, police said Thursday.

The militants raided a village in the northeastern district of Askira Uba on Monday, firing weapons and burning buildings to the ground, Borno state police commissioner Damian Chukwu told AFP.

Casting doubt on government claims that Boko Haram is “technically defeated”, the police chief said officers had been deployed in the area to forestall further attacks.

“Homes and vehicles were burned in the attack which made villagers ran into the bush,” said Chukwu.

Askira Uba is near the town of Chibok, where more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted in April 2014, drawing global attention to the raging Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast.

Nigeria recently said it has forced the ‘jihadists’ out of their Sambisa forest stronghold, but residents in the area believe the ISIL-affiliated group is still present.

The raid was the latest in a string of assaults or attempted attacks in Borno state by suicide bombers, often young women.

At last 20,000 people have been killed since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009. Violence continues, despite government and military claims the group is on the verge of defeat.

Krauts send training troops to Kurds in Syria
The German Parliament on Thursday voted to extend the trainings mission of Kurdish Peshmerga forces for another year and increased the number of German soldiers to 150.

The training includes the handling of chemical weapons, medical skills, logistics and weapons, the German government said.

The German government underlined that the training support is provided at the request of and in agreement with the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.

Moreover, Germany increased the number of its soldiers in Iraqi Kurdistan from 100 to 150 in order to continue the recent successes of training the Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the fight against Islamic State’s (ISIS) extremists.

“Military successes such as the recapturing of the town of Sinjar, have shown that the Peshmergas are well equipped and well-trained fighters,” the German government said in a statement on Thursday.

The German army has trained Kurdish Peshmerga forces for at least two years as part of the Kurdistan Training Coordination Centre (KTCC)–established in the summer of 2015.

The German army will take over responsibility of the training in coordination with international partners.

Germany has so far trained over 4,800 Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers both in the Kurdistan Region and in Germany, which also included training for religious minorities such the Ezidis and Kakayis.

The German government said that the Iraqi army and Kurdish Peshmerga forces have succeeded with support of the international coalition to push ISIS on the defensive, and that the German government will continue to provide stabilization, assistance and development support.

In addition to training, the German army has provided more than 1,800 tons of weapons, ammunition and equipment to anti-ISIS forces in Iraq since 2014, worth more than 70 million euros.

“I welcome the extension of the support provided by Germany, but I hope that Germany will provide even more help for the KRG in the future. Medicines, field hospitals with staff and financial support for the IDPs and refugees are essential,” said Tobias Huch, a politician of the Liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) who regularly visits Kurdistan.

Democratic senator places hold on resolution slamming UN
[IsraelTimes] Democratic senators are holding up a resolution condemning last month’s United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Security Council condemnation of Israel’s settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., was behind the hold, Jewish Insider reported Wednesday. The report cited Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., who told the newsletter that the Senate resolution’s language is objectionable because it does not recognize that settlements are an obstruction to peace, and that should Durbin lift his hold, he would place his own hold.

The resolution, similar to one passed earlier this month in the US House of Representatives, was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, with all Republicans and three Democrats voting for it and seven Democrats voting against.

Individual senators may put a hold on most types of legislation. It takes 60 senators to override a hold.

The flooding of the EU is being orchestrated by Merkel and their world leader, George Soros. With the destruction of the US and European power centers Soros via Hillary and Merkel will rule the world and continue to build their power bases.

The UN, now made up of mainly Muslim power centers would get the opportunity to establish a blockade of Israel growth via the Palestinian state.

But a few things went wrong. Putin wouldn't join the Soros alliance. Hence Obama's expelling his diplomats and flexing his muscle at the border with Poland.

Austrian police arrest 8 over alleged IS group links
[AlAhram] Austrian police enjugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
eight suspected murderous Moslems Thursday in a series of early-morning raids in the country's two largest cities that mobilized heavily armed SWAT teams and hundreds of officers supporting them.

A statement from the public prosecutor's office in Graz, one of the cities involved, said those detained were suspected of involvement with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. holy warrior group.

Police also struck simultaneously in Vienna, in twin operations that the statement said utilized 800 police.

The raids come less than a week after police in Vienna detained a 17-year-old they describe as belonging to "radical Salafist" circles who they said has confessed to experimenting with building a bomb.

But the statement said Thursday's sweeps had been planned for "a longer time," suggesting no immediate link. Instead, they appeared connected to investigations of followers of a Serbian-born Islamic holy man sentenced last year in Graz to 20 years in prison for recruiting dozens of young men to fight for the Islamic State group.

The 35-year old preacher has been identified only as Mirsad O., who also goes by the alias of Abu Tejma, in accordance with Austrian privacy laws. The holy man, who also was found guilty of inciting others to murder and of coercion, has denied all charges.

Interior Ministry figures show that approximately 300 people have left or tried to leave Austria to fight for radical groups in the Middle East since 2012. Of these, 90 have returned while 50 are listed as having been killed in fighting.
Ynet adds:
Austrian police tossed in the slammer
Please don't kill me!
14 people on Thursday on suspicion of belonging to the Islamic State following raids in Vienna and the southern city of Graz, prosecutors said.
Express adds:
The statement gave no more details, but a front man said the people taken into custody included three Austrian nationals with a migrant background, two Bosnians and a Syrian. The nationalities of the other suspects were not immediately known.

The front man said "there was no acute danger" and no indications of a concrete attack.

French journalists’ murder 'linked to al Qaeda hostage ransom'
[FRANCE24] The murder in 2013 of RFI journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon may be related to botched negotiations for the release of kidnapped Frenchies held by al Qaeda's North African branch, according to a report by La Belle France 2.

Dupont, 57, and Verlon, 58, were kidnapped and murdered on November 2, 2013, in northern Mali, where they were covering an election campaign for Radio La Belle France Internationale (RFI), FRANCE 24's sister radio station.

Their killing was claimed by al Qaeda’s regional branch AQIM (al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb), which spoke of retaliation for La Belle France’s military intervention to drive Islamist Lions of Islam out of northern Mali.

According to an investigative report by La Belle France 2, to be aired on Thursday evening, the murder of the two French journalists may be linked to the release, days before, of four kidnapped Frenchies held by AQIM.

The report, which follows a year-long investigation by La Belle France 2 journalists, says French negotiators paid tens of millions of euros to the terrorist organization in exchange for the hostages, who were kidnapped in 2010 in neighbouring Niger.

But it claims competition between rival agencies involved in the negotiations delayed the deal, suggesting the RFI journalists may have been murdered in retaliation for a hitch in the ransom’s payment.

In a disturbing twist, the report reveals that Dupont’s personal computer, which she had left in Gay Paree, was hacked and her mail box emptied moments before her abduction.

A French investigation into the murders has made little progress since its launch in April 2014, to the dismay of the slain journalists’ families and their lawyers. They fear the killing of several suspects in French raids on al Qaeda cells will further hamper the inquiry.

in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The move is to test whether Central Mindanao is conducive to the establishment of a "wilayat" or an Islamic State, Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Thursday.

Hapilon's breakout, with a small group of loyal followers, took place middle of December, he added.

Lorenzana said Basilan and Jolo were too small and and they can be easily be trapped there, hence the ASG leader's decision to move out in Central Mindanao where he is now rallying Maute Group members to support ISIS.

As of this posting, Maute Group members are placed at around 100 armed fighters.

"We know he is there so we are conducting operations against them in Lanao Del Sur, near the Butig area, just beside Lake Lanao, we have been there before with the President sometime last November or December, so we continue to operate against the ASG," the DND chief added.

He said all of these information are from their intelligence sources.

As this developed, the Western Mindanao Command’s (WMC) 103rd Infantry Brigade under Col. Nixon Fortes scored another major breakthrough in its intensified campaign against the terror groups of ASG, Maute Group and foreign terror groups holed up in Butig, Lanao Del Sur.

"The terror groups are reported to have sustained a major casualty with a number of them dead or seriously maimed after a midnight (between the 25th and 26th January 2017) surgical air strike and a well-directed and observed artillery rounds accurately landing in the identified locations of the terror groups," Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Col. Edgard Arevalo said.

As of this posting, ground troops have established foothold and begun their assault to the same objective of the preliminary attack midnight.

"They are now cautiously advancing to their designated objectives ‐ the location of ASG leader Isnilon Hamilon, his select group, and the Brothers Abdullah, Omar, and Otto Maute, and possibly other foreigners joining their notorious group," he added.

"We will await the validated details of the results of this operation as soon as we get confirmations from our troops now on the ground," Arevalo said.

Mosul Offensive News

ISIS using drones as attack platforms
That's a violation of Rule 1 on Asimov's 3 Laws of Robotics!
Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A local source in Nineveh province revealed that a drone belonging to the Islamic State dropped explosives on a house in central Mosul, wounding three family members, Alsumaria News reported on Thursday.

The source said, “A drone belonging to the Islamic State group, flying in the area of Bab al-Toub in central Mosul, dropped explosives on a house in the area, wounding three persons, including a 3-year-old child.”

“Many people in Mosul were victims of drones that drop explosives in the few last weeks,” the source added on condition of anonymity.

Lately, civilians were an easy target for Islamic State’s drones attacks, especially in the recently liberated areas in Mosul, where eight persons were wounded due one of these attacks few weeks ago.

Iraqi forces exchange gunfire across Tigris River

An Iraqi soldier, after spotting a bulldozer across the Tigris River, alerted his elite unit, which fired a missile with a boom so loud it blew a metal door behind the soldiers off its hinges.

“The terrorist driving that bulldozer is burning. He is cooked,” said Mostafa Majeed, the soldier manning the scope. In three months of Iraq’s biggest military operation since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, government forces have seized most of east Mosul.

But they have yet to cross the Tigris, leaving the western half of the city still firmly in the hands of the jihadists, who declared their caliphate here two and a half years ago.

Now, the troops are firing across the river to harass the militants and disrupt their fortifications, in preparation for the next phase of the campaign: the fight for the other side.

“The idea is to keep making life tough for them from our position, to kill them and prevent them from escaping as other forces surround them from other directions,” Major Mohamed Ali told Reuters.

The tactical advance of Iraqi forces is a sharp contrast to 2014, when the army collapsed and fled in the face of a force of only an estimated 800 ISIS militants that swept into Mosul and swiftly seized a third of Iraq.

The soldiers appear disciplined as they position themselves on rooftops behind green sandbags, painstakingly watching the militants’ every move through binoculars and scopes, hoping to get a clear shot with sniper rifles.

More than 5,000 cases filed against Turkey over post-coup purge, says ECHR
[DeutscheWelle] The European Court of Human Rights has called on the complainants to exhaust legal avenues in Turkey before applying at the rights body. The court's president warned it could be "submerged" by the number of applications.
This seems the perfect opportunity to consolidate the cases into a classs action suit, which would mean only one trial at a great savings in judges, lawyers, and time.
The president of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Thursday announced that 5,363 cases filed by Turkish nationals have been lodged against The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

over its crackdown in the wake of a failed coup last year.

The "massive influx" of applications against Turkey after July 15 increased by 276 percent compared to the year before, ECHR President Guido Raimondi said.

An additional 2,945 cases had been filed by Turkish nationals last year, although not directly linked to the aftermath of the failed coup, bringing the total to more than 8,000 applications to the European court.

In the wake of the coup, Turkey launched a crackdown against alleged supporters of exiled Turkish holy man Fethullah Gulen

, which targeted military officers as well as academics, journalists and academics.

for alleged links to Gulen, according to authorities.

'Submerged'
The court last November rejected an application brought by a judge over her pre-trial detention, saying she failed to exhaust all legal routes within the country.

The complainants' "fears as to the impartiality of the Constitutional Court's judges did not in themselves relieve her of the obligation to lodge an application before the court," the European court said.

Raimondi encouraged the complainants to explore legal avenues available in Turkey, including the country's constitutional court, before applying to the ECHR.

"It is good to let the Turkish authorities do their job," Raimondi said, noting that failing to do so could lead the ECHR becoming "submerged by tens of thousands of cases."

Turkey Carries out First Security Operation against Fateh al-Sham
Ankara – Four people have been arrested after an operation targeting al-Nusra militants in the Yildirim district of the northwestern province of Bursa on Wednesday.

The arrested suspects were determined to have been providing logistical support for the jihadist group in Syria and have entered the clash zones under the control of the group.

The gendarmerie ain Busra also determined that the arrested militants were recruiting militants for al-Nusra.

The armed forces carried out simultaneous operations targeting the groups in the Karapinar, Degirmenonu and Ulus neighborhoods of the Yildirim district between Jan. 15 and 18.

The suspects were determined to have been sending money to al-Nusra from Bursa and were later arrested.

Arrest warrants were also issued for five suspects who went to Syria to join the organization and who were determined to still be in Syria.

Police seized logistical material, pistols, knifes, a sword, computer, a cell phone, CDs and a number of documents related to al-Nusra found in the raids carried out at the targeted addresses.

Turkey’s Council of Ministers decided on June 3, 2014 to designate Jabhat al-Nusra, an al-Qaeda affiliate fighting the Bashar al-Assad regime, a terrorist organization.

The Turkish government’s decision to designate the al-Nusra Front as a terrorist organization came in line with the policy of the United States and other Western countries.

In a common matter, a high-ranking ISIS terrorist was arrested in Istanbul in connection to the Reina nightclub attack.

Yasser Mohammed Salem Radown, who reportedly served as a judge in ISIS terrorist organization, was taken in January 5 into custody and interrogated by police before being taken to the Istanbul Justice Palace in Caglayan where he was formally charged for “being affiliated with an armed terrorist group” and “crimes against the Republic of Turkey.”

Radown’s capture will hopefully shed further light on the ISIS terrorist network in Turkey.

Shortly after Uzbek national Abdulkadir Masharipov was captured in Istanbul, it was learned that ISIS suspect Abdurrauf Sertin was responsible for providing homes to foreign ISIS terrorists across Istanbul, allegedly providing housing to Reina nightclub attacker, Masharipov.

The discovery led police forces to make 10 arrests, all of them foreign nationals, at one of those houses run by Radown in the Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul, where suspects were found without passport identification.

Abdulkadir Masharipov, the ISIS militant and Uzbek national who is accused of killing 39 people and wounding 65 others in the Reina attack, slaughtered guests at the posh nightclub as they celebrated the new year, fleeing the crime scene undetected amid chaos at the scene.

Police launched an extensive manhunt which resulted in Masharipov’s arrest 17 days later.

Police have detained a number of ISIS militants and continue to investigate the ISIS organization in Turkey.

Brussels Attackers also Planned Kidnappings
The laptop reveals its secrets.
[AnNahar] The jihadists behind the Gay Paree and Brussels terror attacks had planned to kidnap well-known figures in a bid to trade them for their brethren locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in Belgium, media outlets reported Wednesday.

Investigators came to the conclusion after discovering a recorded conversation in a laptop found in a dustbin in the Brussels neighbourhood of Schaerbeek, from where the perpetrators of the March 22 attack on the Belgian capital's airport had left, public broadcasters RTBF and VRT reported.

The conversation was between an Islamic State

group jihadist in Syria and Ibrahim El Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui, who blew themselves up at the airport, and Khalid El Bakraoui, a jacket wallah who attacked the Maelbeek metro station.

The Sherlocks have identified the jihadist in Syria as Osama Atar, a Begian-Moroccan veteran turban in his 30s who served time in US prisons in Iraq, RTBF said.

The three men, who had been hiding in Brussels, planned several terrorist acts including kidnapping "one or two" personalities to demand the "liberation of brothers and sisters" locked away

in Belgium, including Mehdi Nemmouche, who killed four people during a May 2014 attack on the Jewish Museum in Brussels.

"It will be a great victory" for IS, Lachraoui was quoted as saying. The men finally did not carry out the kidnapping plan but killed 32 people and injured hundreds more in their attacks on the airport and the metro station.

Belgian prosecutors refused to comment on the reports when contacted by AFP.

Trump administration debates designating Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist group
Yes, please.
[REUTERS] A debate is under way in the Trump administration about whether the United States should declare the Moslem Brüderbund a terrorist organization and subject it to U.S. sanctions, according to U.S. officials and people close to President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's transition team.

A faction led by Michael Flynn, Trump's National Security Advisor, wants to add the Brotherhood to the State Department and U.S. Treasury lists of foreign terrorist organizations, the sources said.

"I know it has been discussed. I'm in favor of it," said a Trump transition advisor, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The advisor said Flynn's team discussed adding the group to the U.S. list of terrorist groups but said it was ultimately unclear when or even if the administration ultimately would go ahead with such a move.

Other Trump advisors, as well as many veteran national security, diplomatic, law enforcement and intelligence officials argue the Brotherhood has evolved peacefully in some countries, according to officials and people close to Trump's entourage.

They worry that a U.S. move to designate the entire Brotherhood a terrorist group would complicate relations with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

NY man linked to Islamic State gets 20 years prison for New Year's Eve plot
[REUTERS] An upstate New York man was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiring to provide material support to Islamic State

, in connection with his alleged role in preparing a New Year's Eve attack in 2015 at a local club or bar.
Chop his head off.
Emanuel Lutchman, 26,
...another nutter-jihadi succeptible to grooming. He had a long history of mental illness and criminality, and was so short of cash that an undercover agent covered the $40 cost of supplies for the planned attack...
of Rochester, was sentenced by Chief Judge Frank Geraci of the federal court in that city, following his August 11 guilty plea, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

The prison term was the maximum possible, and Lutchman was also sentenced to 50 years of supervised release. He has been in jug since his Dec. 30, 2015 arrest.

A federal public defender representing Lutchman did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to his plea agreement, Lutchman admitted to having bought a machete, knives, ski masks and other items for his attack, in which he was prepared to kidnap or kill people, and planned to later release a video explaining his actions.

The defendant also admitted to having conspired with Abu Issa al-Amriki, a now deceased member of Islamic State in Syria, hoping that a successful attack would help him gain membership into the group, the Justice Department said.

Lutchman had also expressed support for Islamic State on social media, and gathered issues of Inspire, an online magazine published by al Qaeda, designed to help people conduct "'lone wolf' terrorist attacks" in the United States, the department added.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Secretary of French far-right party holds meetings in Israel
Nicolas Bay
...secretary of Marine le Pen's National Front party...
on ‘private visit’ to gain support for France’s upcoming elections meets with political, military, figures, though Israel shuns the party.
It's been absolutely fascinating watching how their local Jewish communities and Israel have suddenly become terribly important to right wing populist parties, even as Jew hatred blossoms on the left. Geert Wilder started it, I suppose, but the pilgrimages that have been made to Israel and the attempts at rapprochement with Jewish communities at home as the next round of elections approach in Europe has been wonderfully confusing for most involved. Even the alt-right in America, accused so loudly of antisemitism, apparently splits between those who deeply admire Israel and those spewing the kind of vicious nonsense that would have made Hitler very happy indeed.
Israel has no official ties to the National Front because of its far-right ideology and history of anti-Semitism. The party’s leader Marine Le Pen is a leading French presidential candidate in the April and May election.

Emmanuel Nahshon of Israel’s Foreign Ministry says Nicolas Bay was on a private visit and would not meet Israeli officials.

But Bay tweeted photos of his meetings with Israeli Health Ministry’s deputy director general, an Israeli medical commander, a leading member of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, the leader of the party’s youth organization, and other civil society leaders. Bay’s photo of meeting with an army colonel and the Health Ministry official later disappeared from Bay’s Twitter.

Israel’s Haaretz daily reported that Bay was visiting to meet French citizens living in Israel and shore up French Jewish support, and to meet Israeli politicians.

His meetings come as members of other far-right parties in Europe have paid visits to Israel and sought to forge ties with the Jewish state.

"The meeting with Mr. Bay was unofficial and took place by coincidence," said David Shayan, head of the Likud party’s youth group. "Likud Youth has no interest in involvement with the political process and elections in La Belle France." He declined to say what was discussed in the meeting.

The Health Ministry and the Israeli army had no immediate comment.

Since Marine Le Pen, a leading presidential candidate, took over the leadership in 2011, she has worked to scrub away the anti-Semitic image inherited from the long reign of her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, a party co-founder convicted of racism and anti-Semitism. She had her father expelled as a party member, though a court ruled he remains honorary president for life.

The National Front had no comment on Bay’s visit to Israel.

Johann Habib, front man of the Israeli Frenchie-loving Federation, called the visit "shocking" and "a provocation."

"This party does not share our values of democracy and equality and tolerance," Habib said. "The party is anti-Semitic." He questioned why Israel allowed him into the country.

Two weeks ago, Marine Le Pen made her own surprise visit, this one to Trump Tower in New York. She did not meet with anyone in the Trump team, but George Lombardi, a Trump Tower resident and co-founder of Citizens for Trump, said he held a gathering for her with a group of entrepreneurs, industrialists and diplomats.

Government
Bourbons of the Press, Believed by But 15 Percent, Straggle on in Defeat
Conrad Black
[NYSUN] ...There will be an increased level of economic growth, a reduction of most people’s income taxes as well as corporate taxes, a reduction in crime and violence, and a consistent and sustainable foreign policy. The people will respond to that and the media will be unable to deform the record of the administration. There will be mistakes and there will be occasional episodes bordering on buffoonery (they have not been unheard of in that office).

But the establishment Donald Trump assailed, which reacted to his campaign with mirth, and then with rage, and then with desperation, is now cobbling together a rather contemptible guerrilla resistance. It will be ground to powder by what is emerging each week as a juggernaut that holds all the offices, has a clear mandate and program, and is installing a strong administration to reverse 20 years of national decline.

The Obamas, Clintons, and Bushes have left Washington; they had a few good innings, but they will not be back unless one of them a generation younger than these comes back meritocratically.

The press will not have rebuilt its credibility until it recognizes how terribly it has disserved the country from Vietnam and Watergate all the way to the Golden Shower. The Democrats, presumably, will get the hint and change course and recruit better candidates; both sides come to bat. The press is like Talleyrand’s description of the Bourbons returning to Paris in 1815 in the baggage train of Wellington’s army: “They have forgotten nothing and they have learned nothing.”

In a few more years the Bourbons were gone forever; the press will cling on, but they will not make or break administrations as they have and will not regain public confidence from one election to the next, and not before they have conducted a profound self-reappraisal with the help of the 85% of the public who don’t believe them.

The Grand Turk
US warns of anti-American violence risk in Turkey
[IsraelTimes] American consulate says ’extremist groups’ are persisting in ’frequent and aggressive efforts to attack US citizens’.

The United States embassy in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on Thursday warned against the risk of attacks against its citizens in the country after a rise in anti-American rhetoric.

Turkey has been hit by a slew of attacks over the last months claimed by jihadists and Kurdish turbans that have left the country on edge.

The attacks prompted claims in the radical conservative press that the United States had a hand in the violence, although the allegations have been repeatedly and angrily denied by the embassy.

"An increase in anti-American rhetoric has the potential to inspire independent actors to carry out acts of violence against US citizens," the embassy said in a travel warning.

It said new attacks could occur at major events, tourist sites, restaurants, nightclubs, shopping centres, places of worship, and transportation hubs.

An October order for family members of employees posted to the US Consulate in Istanbul to depart Turkey temporarily remains in place, it added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shattered spaceship, Fffflirgoll the Arcturan slithered stealthily toward the control room, where the humans had barricaded themselves...
all US government travel to Istanbul is subject to State Department approval, it said.

This is based on intelligence "indicating bad boy groups are continuing frequent and aggressive efforts to attack US citizens and foreign expatriates in areas of Istanbul where they reside or frequent," it said.

Several Turkish officials and media outlets blamed the United States for the failed July 15 coup aimed at toppling President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

, allegations ridiculed by Washington.

The alleged criminal mastermind of the plot, the preacher Fethullah Gulen, lives in the United States but has denied any links to the putsch.

Washington has so far not yielded to persistent Turkish requests to extradite Gulen, increasing tensions in relations and raising the hackles of Erdogan’s supporters.

In another sign of the poor atmosphere, Erdogan on December 27 accused the United States of supporting "terror groups" in Syria, even including Islamic State

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian opens fire on West Bank road, none hurt – army
[IsraelTimes] Shooting part of spike in violence; soldier maimed in Jenin during early morning arrest raid in which residents shoot, throw pipe bombs at troops.

A Paleostinian man opened fire on vehicles traveling on Route 55 in the northern West Bank on Thursday afternoon, the IDF said. No one was hurt in the attack. A bullet casing was found at the site, which lies near the village of Azzun east of the Paleostinian city of Qalqilya. IDF forces "are searching the area for the suspect," the army said in a statement.

The incident continues a sharp spike in violence in the West Bank in recent days.

An IDF soldier was lightly maimed in festivities between troops and residents in the West Bank city of Jenin early Thursday morning, the army said. During the fighting, Paleostinians fired gunshots and threw Molotov cocktails and pipe bombs at the troops, who shot up their attackers, the army said. It was not immediately clear which side caused the soldier’s wounds. The soldier received treatment on the scene and was then taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The army entered the Paleostinian city’s refugee camp to conduct an arrest raid when they came under attack by local residents. During the operation, the IDF picked up two suspected Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, members -- brothers Muhammad and Ahmed As’ad Abu Khalifa, according to Paleostinian media.

Overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning, the army conducted a number of operations throughout the West Bank, including a crackdown on the manufacturing of illegal weapons in the city of Hebron, the army said.

In the village of Aboud, northwest of Ramallah, the IDF also collected evidence from the home of a Paleostinian man -- identified by Paleostinian media as Raed Omar Nizar Barghouti -- who opened fire on an army post earlier in the evening, the army said.

Small-scale fighting was reported during an arrest raid in the Deheishe refugee camp outside Bethlehem. The festivities broke out after IDF troops moved into the city to pick up two residents, Paleostinian media reported.

In Hebron, the army shuttered a workshop that is believed to have been used to craft makeshift guns, the army said. Eight pieces of machinery, including drill presses and lathes, were confiscated during the operation.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers picked up five more Paleostinian suspects, four of them for rock-throwing. The fifth, who was tossed in the slammer
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
in al-Hashimia, north of Jenin, was suspected of being a member of the Hamas terrorist organization, the army said.

Earlier on Wednesday night, Barghouti shot at an army position outside Aboud from a passing car. IDF troops fired back, wounding him. He received medical treatment on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital, the army said.
