Billows of Dust, a Sudden 'Pop' and an Osprey Falls from the Sky
[MIL.COM] BLUF: In findings endorsed by Marine Corps Forces Pacific Commander Lt. Gen. John Toolan, the probe determined that, while the Osprey's engine failed due to "excessive intake of sand and dirt," the pilots should have adjusted their plan based on the brownout conditions of the landing, and the squadron and MEU commanders should have been more involved in the selection and survey of the landing zone and the development of a stronger casualty evacuation plan ahead of the tragedy.
Blame goes to the pilots and chain of command, not the worthless death box with 30+ years of engineering development and billions of tax payer dollars invested.

The Clinton Curse returns
[Wash Times] In the many decades I have had the pleasure of covering the Clintons I have developed several themes about them that have over the years been validated by fact. One theme is that there is a Clinton Curse.

It afflicts many who come into contact with the fabulous couple. In the early days, the Curse brought down the McDougals, Webb Hubbell, Vince Foster and former Gov. Jim Guy Tucker, all of them by now figures known only to history. More recently it was Jeffrey Epstein, the child molester and Bill's pal and fellow epicurean. Now quite possibly, Josh Earnest, press secretary to President Obama, will be added to the list along with Hillary's aides, Huma Abedin, Cheryl Mills, Bryan Pagliano and Jake Sullivan. Possibly even David Brock will suffer the Clinton Curse. The Clintons are a couple to be avoided. Even the Democratic Party might not be spared come Election Day 2016.

Of course, the Clintons often turn to their favor circumstances that might spell doom to others. Consider the present imbroglio involving Hillary, her mysterious personal server, the FBI, and the aforementioned Clintonistas: Ms. Abedin, Ms. Mills, Mr. Pagliano and Mr. Sullivan. Many people whom I talk to tell me the FBI's interest in that personal server is ominous for Hillary, a matter I wrote about in this column three weeks ago. Yet this imbroglio when viewed from the Clintons' perspective might actually be helping them in their quest for the presidency.

The FBI's investigation is finding so much additional evidence of wrongdoing by the Clintons and their Clintonistas that the copious evidence is actually impeding the bureau from recommending indictments. No sooner does the bureau think it has wrapped up one set of indictments than it trips across another category of malfeasance. For instance, it seems that the FBI has now found the Clintons to have co-mingled their foundation's interests with Hillary's State Department work, and then there is her campaign fundraising, Bill's exorbitant lecture fees, and -- who knows -- the needs of the Clinton Library. If Hillary and Bill are lucky, the FBI investigations will be mired in new evidence for months to come.

#2  It's not so much a curse as a strategy.
The Clintons don't have friends and associates as such, rather, they surround themselves with "bullet sponges", in the hopes that if somebody takes a shot at one of them, you'll soak it up for them.

#3  So far, I doubt the existence of "Clinton Curse." Let me know when there are indictments and I might change my mind; otherwise it lawlessness and getting away with it as usual.

#4  As the article points out, the mud is so deep and toxic that any attempt to actually get an indictment will get stuck forever. "Don't throw me in that briar patch" could be the Clinton's motto.

The infinite volume of mud is much better than a stonewall for stopping the incoming rounds.

Feds: Dearborn Hts. man supports ISIS, planned attack
Federal authorities are accusing a Dearborn Heights man of supporting Islamic State extremists and planning to "shoot up" a Detroit church.

Khalil Abu-Rayyan, 21, hasn't been charged with terrorism-related crimes but faces federal charges of illegally having a firearm while using a controlled substance.

But a complaint unsealed Thursday in U.S. District Court reveals the FBI has been investigating him since May "regarding increasingly violent threats he has made to others about committing acts of terror and martyrdom ‐ including brutal acts against police officers, churchgoers and others ‐ on behalf of the foreign terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and Levant."

Africa North
Don't be surprised if NATO goes after ISIS in Libya
[Hot Air] It looks like the U.S.-led fight against ISIS is probably moving to Libya. AFP reports there are plenty of people in the Defense Department worried about ISIS' movement into the North African country.

It doesn't appear President Barack Obama is interested in getting militarily involved in Libya, but that doesn't mean the Pentagon isn't pushing him. One thing The New York Times points out is not on the table is "ground troops" (emphasis mine).

The "wary of embarking on an intervention in another Muslim country" line is beyond hilarious (or #headdesk) because Obama's administration has intervened in more countries than George W. Bush's administration. The U.S. has militarily attacked three countries (Iraq, Syria, and Libya) under Obama versus Bush's two (Iraq and Afghanistan). The Afghanistan surge also happened on Obama's watch. The type of military involvement may have been different (random bomb strikes and "advisers" vs. full scale invasion) but the fact all the Left's anti-war activists from 2003 and 2004 don't seem to be so anti-war these days, shows how they're willing to sacrifice their own "principles" if "their guy" is in the White House.

The fact Obama appears a little hesitant on attacking Libya (which it shouldn't have gotten involved in in the first place) could be a sign Obama is hoping it won't become a campaign issue for the Democrats. If Hillary Clinton is the nominee, the GOP candidate could bring up the fact Libya is a mess and remind the people Clinton was the one who pushed for involvement in the first place.
If we do invade this year the Pub nominee should bring it up anyway; if we do invade and it becomes a clusterfarg the Pub nominee has two things to discuss...
If Bernie Sanders is the nominee, the GOP candidate could point out Sanders has no real strategy on ISIS and supports the current Administration's efforts which would just drag things down even more.

This depends on who the GOP nominee is to begin with. The only one who really believed in non-interventionism was Rand Paul, and he dropped out earlier this week.
Cruz, Rubio, Bush and Trump are not classical interventionists, they're more Jacksonians: intervene only if really necessary and then do so with overwhelming force. The sort of intervention that President "Lead from Behind" will stage won't be that, and that will be another point to make in the debates.

Europe
German intelligence: ISIS sending fighters disguised as refugees
[Wash Times] After the San Bernardino shootings, President Obama made much of Donald Trump's call for Syrians and other nationalities requesting refugee status and/or asylum in the United States to be prevented from entering the country until we are able to figure out a process to adequately figure out if they are terrorists or not.

Germany's domestic intelligence agency (BfV) said on Friday that Islamic State militants have slipped into Europe disguised as refugees, after the spy agency thwarted an ISIS attack in-country, reported Reuters.

The head of the agency, Hans-Georg Maassen, said, "Then we have repeatedly seen that terrorists ... have slipped in camouflaged or disguised as refugees. This is a fact that the security agencies are facing," Maassen told ZDF television.

"We are trying to recognize and identify whether there are still more IS fighters or terrorists from IS that have slipped in," he added.

Cosmo Magazine Upset Women are Having More Babies
[LI] Favored intellectual journal of American feminists, Cosmo (the same rag that started the tampon tax nonsense) bemoaned increased birth rates in their latest expose'.

They argue that restricted funding to Texas-based Planned Parenthoods "effectively defunded" the abortion mill. As a result, few claims for contraceptive measure have been filed and more babies have been born in locals where Planned Parenthood is no more.

Like many other anti-life advocates, the post's author seems to dwell under the presumption that the only way women are able to receive medical attention is via Planned Parenthood. Forget there exist these nifty little things called "doctor's offices," "clinics," and "hospitals," all of which are staffed with doctors whose medical knowledge extends beyond dismembering a baby with a vacuum hose.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Pharma Bad Boy Martin Shkreli Is a Big Democrat Donor
[PJ] Martin Shkreli, the disgraced pharmaceutical executive who pleaded the Fifth and then smirked and fidgeted his way through a congressional hearing yesterday, is a big Democrat donor.

Democrats have castigated Shkreli for hiking the price of a potentially lifesaving drug by more than 5,000 percent. Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, berated Shkreli during the hearing: "I call this money blood money ... coming out of the pockets of hardworking Americans," he said indignantly.

Cummings might be interested to know that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign in July 2015 took $33,400 of Shkreli's "blood money." The Progressive Midwesterner noticed this back in September:
What's worse: that Shkreli thought the donations would protect him or that Cummings didn't get the memo?

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Recognizing 'Palestine' and the French diplomatic initiative du jour
There is a set of givens in the diplomatic process that have been constant since the April 2014 breakdown of the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations brokered by US Secretary of State John Kerry.

One is that Washington, while officially still reassessing the process, will "stay engaged." Another is that the Palestinians will push forward with efforts against Israel at international forums. Yet another is that Israel will continuously call for the Palestinians to reenter negotiations without preconditions or diktats.

And, finally, it is a given that there will always be some kind of "French initiative" in the background.

Email Scandal Spin: No, Hillary, Powell and Rice Didn't 'Do It Too'
[TOWNHALL] Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as America's Blond Eminence and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Dean Rusk ...
's server is the scandal. It's possible that Rice's aides and Sec. Powell may have acted improperly (though the email rules were set forth after Powell left office). They may have been sloppy with a small number of low-level classified information on an ad hoc basis. The rules and laws pertaining to the US government's data security must be followed. By everyone. But Clinton mishandled hundreds upon hundreds of classified emails, which held state secrets at the highest classification levels.

In fact, just this week, the State Department deemed another seven Clinton emails too sensitive to release in any form, even with redactions, bringing that total to 29. Intelligence officials who've seen some of the documents in question say they betray operational intelligence, the leakage of which puts covert missions and lives at risk.

A former NSA official has intelligence community sources who say Clinton's emails included the true identities of CIA operatives and assets, including foreign nationals working for the agency. Unlike Powell and Rice, Mrs. Clinton exhibited ongoing gross negligence by exposing reams of sensitive and classified intelligence to foreign governments. She ignored her sworn duty to safeguard secrets, "marked and unmarked," and declined to alter her behavior after she was admonished of an explicit vulnerability pertaining to personal email use.

And unlike Powell and Rice, Hillary has consistently lied about this scandal. Her smug assertion that the (twice expanded) FBI investigation won't go anywhere amounts to waving a red flag in front of career Sherlocks and intelligence officials, who are reportedly fuming over her irresponsible, and likely criminal, conduct.

Remember, the probe reportedly entails more than just her email misconduct, Gen. David Petraeus was charged for classified intelligence spillage that was far more limited and contained, and a former US Attorney General says there's already sufficient evidence to justify an indictment.

Clinton seems confident that her political power and privilege will shield her from accountability in the end, sending a less-than-subtle message to the Justice Department, which has already been influenced by two public White House statements.

Parting thought: Colin Powell says the FBI has contacted him about his two "confidential" messages sent prior to the revamped email rules being established. Hillary Clinton recently claimed she hasn't been interviewed by the FBI in connection to its serious and growing probe that focuses on her practices. Is that still true?

#2  Colin Powell's e-mails were routed through a U.S. Government server and posted on a U.S. Government owned computer installed in a U.S. Government office. The entire system was monitored 24 hours a day by the U.S. Federal Government Security System.
None of that can be said about Hillary Clinton's privately owned home-brew system.

If classified e-mail content, of any security level, leaked through the security system and was posted on either Colin Powell's (or his, or Condoleezza Rice's aides) computers it is first and foremost the fault and failure of the U.S. Government.

Democrats, such as Elijah Cummings in his incessant rants before the House Oversight Committee, would like you to believe that Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice are responsible for the crimes of Hillary Clinton.
It is of course completely ridiculous to think that Colin Powell or Condoleezza Rice could or would coerce or compel Hillary Clinton to comit her own crimes.

Any and all persons with a security clearance, regardless of their position or rank, who failed to recognize and report any compromise of the security system DESERVES to be investigated and prosecuted according to the "severity" of their failure or crimes.

#4  OP's comment from yesterday captures the bottom line:

#14 I can see going back into legacy material to see if anything else was sabotaged. Colin Powell may never have known that the emails sent to him contained classified material, since they WERE sent to him. It depends on who sent them, when, and why. If some of Ms. Rice's senior aides had received classified emails and KNEW they were classified, there was a problem. Several big differences between this and Hillary: Neither Powell nor Rice created an exclusively non-governmental server, and did all their business through it. There is (yet) no evidence that any of either of them routinely received classified material on their personal accounts. Neither of them tried to HIDE their personal email account. And (so far) TOP SECRET Codeword material hasn't been discovered, as it was on Hitlery's account. If Hillary doesn't burn, you can put a fork in the United States -- it's dead.

Arabia
Yemen Army Takes Control of the Eastern Gate of Sana’a
Aden- Brig. Gen. Ahmed Asiri, Arab Coalition Spokesman and Consultant at the Saudi Defense Ministry, announced that the presence of pro-government forces in Sana’a is now an irrevocable reality. Brig. Asiri confirmed that Houthi militias are resorting to mine fields to hurdle the resistance and the Yemen’s army advance in Sana’a.

Asiri’s announcement came after both national Army and resistance forces, on Friday, took control over the Al-Farda Nahim camp believed to be the insurgents’ “platoon312”, east of Sana’a.

The camp was confiscated after 24 hours of a broad attack launched by pro- government forces for freeing the eastern door of the capital city from Houthi militia.

Sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that Houthi militia and supporters of the ousted Ali Abdullah Saleh have fled their camps in large numbers, after the attach by the Army forces and the resistance, leaving behind artillery and many wounded. The Arab coalition air-force pounded the zone during the past 48 hours. Anti- government forces were barricaded by pro-Yemen forces for two days before the launched attack.

On the other hand, Jalal Baleedi, leader of an al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist group controlling areas of the war-torn Yemen, referred to as al-Qaeda’s “Dynamo”, has been reported killed, on Friday, in a US drone strike.

Baleedi among a group of al-Qaeda terrorists were killed south of Yemen, in the Abyan Governorate.

Field developments show pro- government forces advancing in the Harad District, near the Saudi Arabian borders. Clashes against Houthi militia in Harad were brought about after a report on military support coming in from navy forces on the coasts of Midi. Army forces were capable of taking control over Midi towards the end of January.

Data indicats that clashes in Harad and Northern Yemen (Saudi Southern Borders) are an effort to successfully free the western coastal areas from insurgency.

Afghanistan
U.S. and Britain suspend financial aid to Afghanistan Peace Council
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The United States and United Kingdom governments have reportedly suspended financial aid to Afghanistan High Peace Council.

The Afghanistan High Peace Council (AHPC) confirmed Friday that the move by the major donors followed amid ongoing issues within the council, including the leadership of the council that lacks a chairman during the past one year.

AHPC officials said the major donors that have suspended financial aid includes the United States Agency for International Development and the government of the United Kingdom.

A senior member of the council, Mohammad Ismail Qasimyar, confirmed that the donors have suspended financial support to the Highe Peace Council since the beginning of the year.

Qasimyar further added that the main motive behind the suspension of the financial support by the international donors have been the lack of chairman for almost a year and issues within the secretariat of the council.

Without disclosing information on the amount of aid the council was receiving from the two main donors, Qasimyar said the new chairman and secretariat chief are expected to be assigned in coming days.

The current Minister of Foreign Affairs Salahuddin Rabani was previously serving as the chairman of the council while the acting Minister of Defense Masoom Stanikzai was the secretariat chief.

The Afghanistan High Peace Council was formed by the former President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai

Three Killed in Somalia Car Bomb Targeting Airport Official
[ALMANAR.LB] Three people were killed Friday in a boom-mobile targeting an airport official in Somalia's capital, police said, as Sherlocks probe an airplane blast experts fear was also a bomb.

"An airport security official was targeted but he survived the attack, three other people including a woman were killed in the blast," police official Ali Dahir told AFP.

The man believed to have been targeted had just left the vehicle to go into a chemist shop.

"A man got out of the car and entered a pharmacy, but before he returned a huge blast destroyed the car. I saw several people burned," said Aded Mohammed, who was near the kaboom.

No group has grabbed credit for the boom-mobile, but Somalia's Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab bully boyz have carried out a raft of similar attacks in the past.

The boom-mobile follows a blast on a commercial airliner that ripped a hole in its fuselage, 15 minutes after take-off from Mogadishu on Tuesday.

It is unclear whether the two blasts were in any way related, but security has been boosted around the already heavily fortified airport.

Shebab Militants Seize Somali Port
[ALMANAR.LB] Somalia's Shabaab faceless myrmidons retook their former stronghold of Merka on Friday from African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
troops who pulled out of the port they had held for three-and-a-half years, the governor said.

The loss of Merka, the regional state capital of Lower Shabelle, is one of the biggest setbacks for the AU force in its nearly decade-long battle against the Shabaab.

"The AU troops pulled out of the town and Shabaab bandidos faceless myrmidons entered -- and have secured control without fighting," Ibrahim Adam, governor of the Lower Shabelle region told news hounds.

The historic port, some 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu, was captured in August 2012 by African Union troops.

It is one of the first major towns the Shabaab have seized back and it gives them access to a sea port again.

There was no immediate response from AMISOM or government officials.

Residents confirmed the takeover, saying heavily armed Shabaab fighters swept into the town with holy warrior black flags, before addressing residents.

"AMISOM forces moved out at midday and the local administration and all other Somali security forces left a few minutes later - and then heavily armed Shabaab bandidos faceless myrmidons entered the town," said Ibrahim Mumin, a local.

"They have been addressing residents at the district headquarters."

The Shabaab are fighting to overthrow the internationally-backed government in Mogadishu, which is protected by 22,000 AU troops.

The faceless myrmidons have lost ground since being routed from Mogadishu in 2011 but continue to stage regular shooting and suicide kabooms, and in recent months staged a series of brazen raids on AU bases.

Israel returns bodies of terrorists who killed officer in Jerusalem
[JEWISHAZ] Israel handed over to the Paleostinian Authority three bodies of Lions of Islam who died in a Jerusalem shootout, in which they killed one soldier.

The bodies of Ahmed Abu al-Ghub, Ahmed Zakarna and Mohammed Kamil from the Jenin area of the West Bank were given to Paleostinian Authority officers this afternoon (Feb. 5), Ynet reported.

The three men, all childhood friends aged 20-21, arrived armed with knives and an automatic machine gun to the Old City in eastern Jerusalem on Wednesday. When one of them stabbed a Border Police officer, the stabber was rubbed out by Hadar Cohen, an 18-year-old woman who had joined the police force as part of her mandatory army service two months ago. One of the Lions of Islam shot Cohen dead before being bumped off by other soldiers, along with his two friends.

The Lions of Islam were all on the list of Paleostinians who are denied access to Israel because they are deemed security risks. Army officials told the NRG news website that they believe the three men entered Israel illegally and are working with the Israel Security Agency, or Shin Bet, to retrace their steps.

Cohen was buried yesterday at the Yahud Military Cemetery near Tel Aviv, where Israel Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh called her "a hero, whose actions prevented a much larger tragedy."

Refugees Go Clubbing In Russia, Harass Girls, Wake Up In Hospital The Next Morning
[DAILYCALLER] A group of 51 refugees were brutally assaulted outside a night club in Murmansk, Russia, after they groped and molested women at a night club Saturday.

The refugees had previously been ordered to leave Norway for "bad behavior" and tried their luck in Russia. What they didn't realize when they went out clubbing in Murmansk is that Russians have less tolerance when it comes to sexual assault on local women than other European countries.

The refugees allegedly groped and harassed women in a similar manner as the assaults in Cologne
...a lovely city in Germany. They invented perfume there...
on New Year's Eve. A group of male Russian took them aside to "educate" them that "Cologne is 2,500 kilometers south of here."

The refugees tried to flee but were quickly captured by the Russians. They then took them out to the street and gave them a beating they will remember. Police arrived to break up the fight but locals report that they threw a few punches at the refugees before arresting 33 of them. Eighteen refugees were in such bad condition they had to be take to the hospital.

MSNBC's Democratic debate is lowest rated of the season
[MONEY.CNN] MSNBC's feisty debate between Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
and Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as The Heroine of Tuzla and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Hamilton Fish ...
received high marks from political observers, but not high ratings from ordinary viewers.

With 4.5 million viewers, it was the lowest-rated debate of the 2016 election cycle by far, according to Nielsen data.

The prior low was 7.8 million viewers for ABC's Democratic debate on the Saturday night before Christmas.

MSNBC's debate was a late addition to the lineup, originally announced just over a week ago and not officially sanctioned by the Democratic National Committee until this week. But the channel heavily promoted the debate on Wednesday and Thursday.

The ratings results may suggest some measure of debate fatigue among viewers. MSNBC may have also faced structural disadvantages because it is generally lower-rated than Fox News or CNN.

Iraq
Sistani suspends weekly sermons
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iraq’s top Shiite cleric said on Friday he would no longer deliver regular weekly sermons about political affairs, which for years have been a source of guidance for Iraqi politicians and his millions of followers.

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani did not give a reason for suspending the sermons, which have lately focused on the government’s battle against ISIS militants and anti-corruption efforts.

“It has been decided not to continue this on a weekly basis at the present time, but only as demanded by events,” Sistani’s aide Ahmed al-Safi, who delivered the message, said in a televised speech from the southern shrine city of Kerbala before reciting a prayer.

Sistani, a reclusive octogenarian, enjoys almost mythical status among millions of Shiite followers and wields authority that few Iraqi politicians would openly challenge. His political sermons have ranged over issues such as security, elections and the economy.

He called in June 2014 for Iraqis to take up arms against the Sunni ultra-hardline insurgents of ISIS after they seized nearly a third of the country’s north and west. Tens of thousands of Shiites heeded the call.

Pope, Russian Orthodox patriarch to meet in historic step
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Pope Francis and the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church will meet in Cuba next week in a historic step to heal the 1,000-year-old schism that divided Christianity between East and West, both churches announced Friday.

The Feb. 12 meeting between Francis and Patriarch Kirill will be the first ever between the leaders of the Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Churches, which is the largest in Orthodoxy.

Francis is due to travel to Mexico Feb. 12-18. He will stop in Cuba on the way and meet with Kirill on Feb. 12 at the Havana airport, where they will speak privately for about two hours and then sign a joint declaration, the Vatican said.

"This event has extraordinary importance in the path of ecumenical relations and dialogue among Christian confessions," said the Vatican front man, the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

The two churches split during the Great Schism of 1054 and have remained estranged over a host of issues, including the primacy of the pope and Russian Orthodox accusations that the Catholic Church is poaching converts in former Soviet lands.

Those tensions have prevented previous popes from ever meeting with the Russian patriarch, even though the Vatican has long insisted that it was merely ministering to tiny Catholic communities in largely Orthodox lands.

Thousands of civilians escape Russian airstrikes north Syria
ALEPPO – More than 15,000 Syrian civilians fled Aleppo province due to intensified Russian airstrikes, activists reported on Friday. This comes amid fears that Aleppo falls under a full siege by pro-Assad forces.

“Thousands of families escaped their homes in Aleppo province, heading to Turkey,” local media activist Tammam Hashim told ARA News.

“Thousands of people crossed into Turkey through the Bab al-Salam border crossing, while many others are still stranded at the border gate, waiting to be allowed to enter the Turkish territory,” the source said.

The increasing civilian casualties under the Russian raids in Aleppo caused a state of panic among the residents of Syria’s most populated province.

“People fear that Aleppo falls under a full siege by pro-Assad army and Hezbollah militants,” Hashim said.

On Friday, Syrian army forces and allied Hezbollah militants seized control of Ratyan town in the northern countryside of Aleppo province.

“Backed by Russian airstrikes, pro-Assad troops took over Ratyan after heavy fighting with rebels of the Levant Front,” rebel spokesman Saleh Zein told ARA News.

Aleppo province is divided between the Syrian regime’s troops, moderate rebel groups, ISIS and al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front. Civilians suffer a sharp shortage of basic supplies amid intensifying fighting across the province.

“The situation in Aleppo is a humanitarian catastrophe,” an opposition spokesman told reporters in Geneva after the ill-fated peace talks. “The international community must take urgent, concrete steps to address it.”

Israeli troops shoot dead a Palestinian teen hurling Molotov
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Israeli soldiers shot and killed a Paleostinian 17-year-old in the occupied West Bank on Friday, hospital officials said, and the Israeli military said he had been about to throw a petrol bomb.

More than four months of intensified violence in the region have raised concern of wider escalation, a decade after the last Paleostinian uprising subsided.

The Israeli military said soldiers spotted the youth holding a lit Molotov Cocktail and about to throw it at vehicles traveling along a main West Bank highway where Israeli cars are often targeted by Paleostinians hurling rocks and petrol bombs.

"The force responded to the immediate threat, prevented the attack, and shot one of the assailants," an Israeli military spokeswoman said. The Paleostinian Health Ministry confirmed his death and age.

A wave of stabbings, shootings and car-rammings carried out by Paleostinians has killed 27 Israelis and a U.S. citizen since October. Israeli forces have killed at least 156 Paleostinians, 101 of them assailants, according to authorities. Most of the others died during violent protests.

"If there was a consensus from the leadership of the coalition, the kingdom is willing to participate in these efforts because we believe that aerial operations are not the ideal solution and there must be a twin mix of aerial and ground operations," Asiri said.

Militias Bomb the National Museum in Taiz
Houthi militias bombed the national museum in Taiz which resulted in all of its contents being burnt. In addition to this, all of its antiquities and rare manuscripts chronicling the history of Yemen and the governorate of Taiz have been reduced to ashes.

Houthi militias and forces loyal to the ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh continued their violent and unrestrained bombing of residential neighbourhoods in Taiz. In addition to this, villages and sites occupied by pro-legitimacy forces in the Al-Ahyuq area which is west of Taiz were bombarded with Katyusha missiles.

Tens of Houthi militia and forces loyal to the ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh were killed and wounded in coalition raids led by Saudi Arabia that targeted sites for storing the militia’s weapons in different parts of the city of Taiz and its outskirts. These raids resulted in heavy losses of lives and materiel.

In light of the Houthi militia’s refusal to adhere to the Security Council resolution 2216 which stipulates the release of prisoners and lifting the siege on the city of Taiz, activists from the city have resorted to initiatives to lift the siege there. A “convoy of conscience” was launched yesterday and participants will walk from the city of Tarbah carrying a large amount of humanitarian aid. Thousands of Taiz residents participated in the convoy and assembled in the municipal centre of Tarbah which is located 45 Km from Taiz.

The preparatory committee for the initiative held Houthi militias responsible “for the safety and security of the convoy or its violation and that of its participants directly or indirectly” due to the fact that the convoy will pass through the main road that extends from Tarbah to Taiz via Bir Basha. The organisation “Tadmeen Shabab” announced that humanitarian endeavours are ongoing and that aid is being distributed to the inhabitants of the city. It added that it had delivered 300,000 dialysis machines for patients with kidney failure at the Revolution General Hospital which funded the machines whilst the World Health Organization (WHO) paid for the cost of transportation and delivery.

The organisation’s coordinator Bassam Al-Hakimi said in a press statement that “the organisation has made efforts with all parties to facilitate the entry of this quantity of medicinal aid to the hospital and that the quantity has been delivered to the artificial kidney centre at the hospital. This will contribute to the alleviation of pain for patients at the centre.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
U.N. voices alarm at growing number of child marriages in Iran
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A growing number of maidens of tender years are being forced to marry in Iran, U.N. rights experts warned Thursday, decrying laws permitting sexual intercourse with girls as young as nine.

Following a review of the situation in Iran, the U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) urged the country to "repeal all legal provisions that authorize, condone or lead to child sexual abuse."

The committee, which is made up of 18 independent experts who monitor the implementation of international children's rights treaties, said it was "seriously concerned" over reports that child marriages in Iran were on the rise.

A growing number of "girls at the age of 10 years or younger ... are subjected to child and forced marriages to much older men," CRC said.

Compounding the problem were laws allowing sex with girls as young as nine, and a lack of criminalization for sexual abuse of even younger children, it said.

The committee also lamented a law obliging wives "to fulfil sexual needs of their husbands at all times," which it stressed "places child brides at risk of sexual violence, including marital rape."

Stressing the devastating effects child marriage can have on the physical and mental health of maidens of tender years, the experts called on Tehran to introduce national laws clearly banning and criminalizing the practice.

The committee also raised a range of other disturbing issues, including the fact that boys in the country are considered criminally responsible at the age of 15, and girls at nine.

This means children down to those ages can be subjected to "sentences involving torture or cruel, degrading treatment of punishment," it said.

Most distressing perhaps is that some crimes committed as a minor in Iran are punishable by death, and that the country occasionally executed children.

"A small number of children have been executed in Iran," committee member Bernard Gastaud told news hounds.

His colleague Benyam Mezmur described the situation as being "of very serious concern."

The Grand Turk
Erdogan: Russian claim on Syria 'laughable'
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
on Friday blasted as "laughable" Russia's accusation that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
was actively preparing to invade Syria.

"I find this Russian statement laughable... rather it is Russia that is currently engaged in an invasion of Syria," Erdogan said, quoted by the state-run Anatolia news agency.

Previously, a senior Turkish government official said on Friday that Turkey is not planning a military incursion into Syria and Russian talk of such action is propaganda.

Erdogan said Russia must be held accountable for the people it has killed in Syria, saying Moscow and Damascus were together responsible for 400,000 deaths there, Dogan News Agency reported on Friday.

Speaking at a joint presser with his Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
ese counterpart while on a state visit to the West African country, Erdogan also said Russia was engaged in an invasion of Syria and accused it of trying to set up a "boutique state" for its longtime ally President Bashar al Assad.

"Turkey does not have any plans or thoughts of staging a military campaign or ground incursion in Syria," the official told Rooters, adding Russia was stepping up its own military campaign in Syria every day instead of working for a solution.

"Turkey is part of a coalition, is working with its allies, and will continue to do so. As we have repeatedly said, Turkey will not act unilaterally," the official said.

Russia said on Thursday it suspected Turkey was preparing a military incursion into Syria, as a Syrian army source said Aleppo would soon be encircled by government forces with Russian air support.

Turkey in turn accused Moscow of trying to divert attention from its own "crimes" in Syria, and said Aleppo was threatened with a "siege of starvation". It said Turkey had the right to take any measures to protect its security.

In another sign of the spreading international ramifications of the five-year-old Syrian war, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
said it was ready to participate in ground operations against ISIS in if the U.S.-led alliance decided to launch them.

Britain
EU Deal 'Irreversible', Insists David Cameron
[NEWS.SKY] David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
has insisted a finalised EU reform deal would be "irreversible" as the UK would have a veto.

He was speaking after the European Parliament President Martin Schulz told Sky News that everything could be reversed, including legally binding decisions. His comments were likely to prove unhelpful to the Prime Minister as he sought to rally support for the proposed reforms.

But during a visit to meet with his counterpart in Copenhagen, Mr Cameron said while it was technically reversible, Britannia would need to agree to it.

Mr Schulz had told Sky News: "Nothing in our lives is irreversible.

"Therefore legally binding decisions are also reversible - nothing is irreversible.
That doesn't make a bit of sense...
"But in politics, when 28 heads of states and governments and the European institutions together on the 19 February agree about a deal, the deal is done."

Mr Cameron has been engaged in a frantic diplomatic efforts in Europe as he seeks to drum up support for the draft deal hammered out with Brussels.

Kashmiris clash with troops after Friday prayers in Srinagar
SRINAGAR: Hundreds of Kashmiris protesting against Indian rule in occupied Kashmir clashed with government forces shortly after Friday prayers.

Holding aloft Pakistani flags, they chanted slogans like “we want freedom”.

They also grimaced fiercely made faces rolled their eyes threw rocks at police and paramilitary personnel who responded by firing tear gas, police said. No one was immediately reported injured in the clashes.

The protest coincided with the observance in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir of the Kashmir Solidarity Day, which is observed on Feb 5 every year to support the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. The UN Security Council Resolution 47, adopted in 1948, called for a vote among residents of Kashmir to determine the disputed Himalayan region’s fate. But the resolution has never been implemented.

China-Japan-Koreas
N. Korea Holds Massive Artillery Drills
North Korea recently held a massive artillery exercise along the frontlines of its West Sea border, a military source said Wednesday. Military authorities here have put troops stationed on islands on the West Sea on high alert amid fears of a North Korean provocation along the Northern Limit Line ahead of its looming rocket launch.

The drills fuel speculation after the North's recent nuclear test that military hardliners have gained the upper hand in internal power struggles there. The source said the North's live-fire artillery exercises "went beyond routine drills."

"We are preparing for a North Korean provocation using South Korean artillery drills as an excuse," the source added.

The military has also spotted North Korean coastal batteries ready to fire live ammunition. They are the same that shelled Yeonpyeong Island in 2010.

North Korea apparently completed an observation post on Ari Island, an uninhabited island 12 km northeast of Yeonpyeong Island. A 20-m steel tower is apparently used to monitor Yeonpyeong and surrounding waters.

Officials here believe the observation post enables North Korea to quickly react to movements by South Korean Marines and Navy vessels stationed on Yeonpyeong Island. The North also apparently stationed four 122-mm multiple rocket launchers on Kal Island 4.5km northwest of Yeonpyeong.

Obama’s weakness and Xi Jinping’s bullying are about to start a nuclear arms race in Asia
Josh Stanton at One Free Korea puts into words what we've been saying at the Burg for a while about how the lack of a proper response to North Korea has led to a dangerous situation. American weakness, Obama's fecklessness, Hillary's criminality, and the foolishness of our front-runners today tend to suggest to the South Koreans that we wouldn't regard a nuclear attack on Seoul with the resoluteness they've been expecting over the years. Ditto Japan, which eyes both a crazy North Korea and the avarice of China.

What do you do then? Why, you nuke up, of course. Stanton lays out what the South Koreans, Japanese and Taiwanese are saying. And what they might do.

Fun for a Saturday.

Memo to idiots cheering Bernie and Hillary
[ISRAELNATIONALNEWS] As Fidel came to power in 1959, how many Americans slid onto rafts to get into Cuba? Or took the last ship to Havana? I’ll need actual names.

Attention to all you college kids out there so starry-eyed for Bernie – are you serious?

But you’re young. Far and wide you’ve been educated by Liberal pro-BDS professors, so you’re not expected to know too much except that the two most reliable beacons of tolerance and liberty, the United States and Israel, are on the wrong side of history.

Pure brainwashing, but you will grow up. There is no excuse however for people already grown up who still cheer for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.

You really think socialism is okay?

Let’s be clear. There is no difference between socialists, liberals and progressives. They are all Communists, or shades of the same mentality.

Either way, it’s about taking from the rich and giving it to the poor in order to make everybody equal, meaning equally miserable. It’s also about a one-man show. No checks. No balances. Like Obama visiting a Baltimore mosque to offer Muslims his love and concern.

But Obama visited no synagogue to share Jewish grief for loved ones being slain in Israel, most recently the 19-year-old woman of valor Hadar Cohen.

Nor has Mr. Obama ever shared concern for Jews being tormented on campus.

One man, one rule, can be so arbitrary.

Communism sucks. Ask the people who lived there. Call it by its more pleasant and more acceptable name, socialism; same answer. Unbearable.

Iraq
19 die in Erbil hotel fire
[ArabNews]. JEDDAH: Most of the victims of a fire that struck a hotel in Iraq on Friday were Filipinos, the charge d'affaires of the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad said.

“We have just been informed that 14 Filipinos were among the 17 people who died in a fire that struck a hotel in Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, this evening,” Elmer Cato posted on Facebook.

“We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and will do everything we can to bring them home as soon as possible,” he said.

Saman Barzanji, director general of the Erbil health department, was later quoted by Agence France Presse as saying the death toll had risen to 19, including 14 Filipinos, three Iraqis, a Palestinian and another person of unknown nationality.

Dozens more were injured and taken to hospital, said Fakher Harki, the department’s spokesman.

Nawzad Hadi, the governor of Erbil province, said preliminary information indicated that the cause of the fire was an electrical problem in a sauna.

The fire took place at the four-star Capitol Hotel where rooms cost from $100-$240 per night.

The hotel’s website says it has a 740-square-meter (2,580-square-foot) spa that includes saunas and a pool.

Photos and video posted on social media showed dark grey smoke pouring from windows on the top floor of the building.

The Kurdistan region in north Iraq has largely been spared the deadly violence that plagues other parts of the country.

The region is frequently visited by tourists from other areas of Iraq and various countries in the region.

A hotel fire in Sulaimaniyah, another city in Iraqi Kurdistan, killed 30 people in July 2010.

The city’s hospital said people from 12 different nations died in that fire, including some who jumped to their deaths from upper-floor windows while trying to escape the flames

Donald Trump rolls out the expletives at Portsmouth rally
[CBSNEWS] "And you can tell them to go f**k themselves," Donald Trump told a crowd at a Portsmouth Rally on Thursday night, uttering the expletive at the climax of the riff on his tax proposal. He was referring to companies that have relocated overseas for more favorable tax rates.

Trump often relies on expletives and crude language to spice up his stump speech, though Thursday evening's event was a little more profane than usual. While he refrained from using the vulgar Yiddish word that he directed at Secretary Clinton in December, Trump ran through more than his usual share of profanity at the Portsmouth rally.

Syrian Army, allies make advances in Deraa, Aleppo
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Syrian Army and allied militias on Friday made advances when they retook a town at the doorstep of Deraa and completely encircled the northern countryside of Aleppo province.

Deraa is a contested city that lies between Damascus and the Jordan border.

The conquest opens several supply routes to Deraa, which is divided between government and opposition fighters, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Deraa was the scene of some of the first protests against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
in 2011 and holds symbolic value in the narrative of the uprising that has since collapsed into a vicious civil war.

Syria's official news agency says the offensive on Atman, north of Deraa, scattered rebel forces - which it labels terrorists.

Troops advanced under the cover of heavy artillery bombardment and air power, the Observatory reports.

Meanwhile,

the commander of a U.S.-supported Syrian rebel group said on Friday the northern countryside of Aleppo province was completely encircled by Syrian government forces and its allies, and heavy Russian bombardment continued.

The assault in northern Aleppo province, backed by hundreds of Russian air strikes there, has also prompted tens of thousands of people to flee towards the Turkish border and helped derail peace talks in Geneva.

, said the aerial bombardment continued.

"The Russian cover continues night and day, there were more than 250 air strikes on this area in one day," he told Rooters.

"The regime is now trying to expand the area it has taken control of," he said. "Now the northern countryside (of Aleppo province) is totally encircled, and the humanitarian situation is very difficult."

Hezbollah's Al Manar television said government forces and allied fighters had taken over the town of Ratyan, which lies close to areas they captured on Wednesday.

The Observatory confirmed the "symbolic" capture of Ratyan, but Haj Ali said it had not yet fallen.

"There are very heavy battles in Ratyan, and an attempt by the regime to storm it. But until now they haven't been able to enter," he said.

Haj Ali reiterated calls for countries backing Syrian rebels to send more military aid, including anti-aircraft missiles, but said he held out little hope for the latter.

"We demand daily more support, but the issue of anti-aircraft (weapons) has become a dream ... the dream that will not come true," he said.

U.S.-made TOW missiles, or guided anti-tank missiles, are the most potent weapon in the rebel arsenal and have been supplied to vetted rebel groups as part of a program of military support overseen by the Central Intelligence Agency.

But while they have helped rebels to slow advances on the ground, they are of little use against fighter bombers.

Over 10,000 ISIS affiliates based in Afghanistan and Pakistan: Report
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Over 10,000 loyalists of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group are based in the remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistain, a new project report.

The project by the UK-based Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) has been launched amid concerns that the loyalists of the terror group have stepped up efforts to expand foothold in the region, including swaths of southern and central Asia under the terror group's so-called Khurasan province.

Funded by the Smith Richardson Foundation, the research project has recently been launched, drawing on interviews with Daesh [Islamic State] members, village elders, members of other Death Eater organizations in the area -- mainly Taliban and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) -- and local-level government officials.

In a commentary, Dr. Antonio Giustozzi, Associate Fellow, RUSI, has written there are around 7,000--8,500 Daesh [Islamic State] members based on Afghan soil and 2,000--3,000 based in Pakistain, citing different sources (Daesh [Islamic State] cadres themselves, Afghan security sources, Pak security sources and Iranian Pasdaran sources).

These figures are inclusive of all active Daesh [Islamic State] members, both fighters and support elements, according to the commentary piece, adding that the loyalists of the terror started popping up in the second half of 2014 all over Afghanistan as a result of commanders of the Taliban, Hizb-i Islami and other gangs switching sides.

As the loyalists of the terror group are struggling to establish strong bases while in a defensive role, they continue to face resistance from the Afghan Taliban as well hard boyz belonging to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain who seems to be preparing an attack against them, a move that could slow the recruitment of the terror group, according to the research report.

The research report, citing ISIS sources, also revealed that the loyalists of the terror group have been coming under pressure from some of its donors to increase activities in Central Asia, using its well-developed contacts with Central Asian jihadist groups in northern Afghanistan.

"Early findings for the new research project suggest that Daesh [Islamic State] has established a foothold in Afghanistan and is still growing. However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
its advance more closely resembles a hurdle race than a triumphant march. So far, Daesh [Islamic State] has been mainly troubling the Taliban, but it is unlikely that it will remain focused on competing with other Death Eater groups," the commentary piece concludes.

It also adds " In order to establish its jihadist credentials vis-à-vis donors and potential recruits, Daesh [Islamic State] will have to increasingly target the Afghan government, and Russian, Iranian and Western interests. But does it have the ability to hurt these actors? For that, it will need capabilities that it has not yet demonstrated and not just 'numbers' of fighters."

Britain
'Implosion' in Muslim world fuelling refugee crisis: UK ex-foreign minister
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Civil wars crippling many Muslim states and fuelling a global refugee crisis are driven in part by major struggles within Islam that cannot be ignored, former British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said on Wednesday.

This "implosion" in many Muslim-majority countries has forced people from their homes in "unheard-of" numbers, said Miliband, now head of the New York-based humanitarian group International Rescue Committee.

Miliband spoke at the international affairs think-tank Chatham House in London. He will take part in a major conference on Thursday in the British capital that aims to raise billions of dollars from donors to respond to the Syrian crisis.

"More people are fleeing conflict, they're fleeing conflict significantly in Muslim-majority countries, so the implosion in the Islamic world, in Afghanistan, in the Middle East, is driving it," he said.

Venturing into what he called "tricky territory", he added it would be dishonest not to report that his organization's work was increasingly focused on crises in Muslim-majority countries.

"It seems to me there are big questions, big debates happening within Islam about the reconciliation of Islam to modernity, to democracy, of different segments within the Islamic tradition," he said.

"To pretend that that's not part of the story wouldn't be right," he added, without elaborating.

In several war-torn countries, bad boy Sunni literalists such as the Taliban and Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
are battling other Muslims who want the faith more adapted to the modern world or belong to a minority sect such as Shi'ism.

Miliband added his analysis did not apply to the whole of the Muslim world, citing Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority country, and Bangladesh as two examples of countries that did not fit into the narrative.

"It's not right to pretend that all Muslim-majority countries are undergoing this implosion," he said. "But I think if you look at the story in South Asia over the last 30 years and the story in the Middle East over the last 20 years, then that's part of the story."

Miliband said the Syrian crisis was a long-term issue, with large numbers of refugees likely to be living in Leb, Jordan, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and other countries for many years, and this called for a change in the scale and nature of the response.
Miliband is correct in his diagnosis, just wrong in his prescription. Yes, the Muslim Arab world is collapsing. Syria, Libya, Yemen, Algeria, Egypt and Sudan are shitholes. Iraq and Tunisia are semi-shitholes. The Arabian peninsula has potential to be a mega shithole. There is clearly an implosion as the people come to recognize that their ideology and their leaders have failed.

Miliband is wrong in how to fix this: you don't do so by importing all the problems to Europe in the name of 'compassion'. The shorter-term fix is to keep the refugees in their countries, and to do so by setting up safe spaces for them: camps that are protected by European powers and funded by European money where the refugees can go, protect their families, and catch their breath. The Euros are going to pay anyway whether the refugees are in Germany or Syria. The longer-term fix is to empower the refugees to take their countries away from the evil, crazy, religion-sputtering leaders who run them. That will take work but it's the right direction.

Oh and Mr. Miliband: 'south Asia' has not failed. India is doing reasonably well. Perhaps you're speaking in code?

#1  This is something that Congress can and should investigate via hearings. If verified then impeachment of the DHS officials responsible should be initiated.

Europe
As children die reaching for Europe's shores, empathy fades
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Five months ago, a 3-year-old Syrian boy's corpse on a Turkish beach galvanized public action for refugees. Now, strikingly similar images are generating little more than a collective shrug.

It's partly about timing, circumstance and the exceptional power of last September's photos of Aylan Kurdi.

But it's also because sensitivities are growing dull. Boats arrive on Europe's shores daily, or sink on the way -- like the one that capsized off The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's coast on Saturday, killing at least 37 people including babies and other young children.

Images from the latest tragedy, including the bodies of children, failed to generate the same level of shock.

Fears -- that refugees will stage bad boy attacks or molest women -- threaten to displace compassion. And Europe has yet to find the magic solution to its migrant dilemma.

"The public seems to be kind of immunized. They don't want to see it anymore," said Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Some are rebelling against the numbness. Greek soccer players held a sit-in solidarity protest after the latest refugee drownings. Artist Ai Weiwei, wanting kinder migrant policies, re-enacted Aylan's death.

The photos of Aylan weren't the first or last to document the fatal risk that families take to flee Syria's war for something better in Europe. But his lifeless, tidily-dressed body -- first face-down on the sand, later in the arms of a police officer -- captured the collective imagination like no other.

In an era when images are ubiquitous and fleeting, it stood out.

Unusually, he was quickly identified and found to have relatives in Canada, which helped his story go global.

"People react very strongly to individual stories," Fleming said. "It was a single boy on the beach, looking like my son, my little brother, in a sleeping position."

Arabia
The states remain despite terrorism
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Videos and photographs have circulated online of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Nayef's visit to Al-Ahsaa region in the Eastern Province following the terrorist attack on Imam Rida mosque last week. He even appeared in a selfie with one of the injured victims. His meetings and dialogue with people there were distinguished by goodwill.

When he met the brave young man who attacked the second jacket wallah before he could blow himself up, bin Nayef confirmed that the kingdom will triumph over terrorism. Society has become a partner with the state in fighting extremism, but without getting involved in the state's role. This is the whole point. The state's role will always be paramount, as the prince has said before.

People's help, unity and attentiveness is important, but it is unacceptable that some enthusiastic citizens in several areas want to form what resembles popular mobilization forces in mosques. The roles of the community and individuals end when they interfere with that of the state.

Everyone was happy with the young man's deterrence of the terrorist in the mosque, and with youths' efforts in general to limit terrorist activities around mosques. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
all this falls within the context of complementing, not interfering with, the state's role. Society must detect terrorists, limit their activity and report them. Security forces will handle the rest. May God protect His worshippers from all evil.

-Land of the Free
This Week in Guns, February 6th, 2016

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

My opinion of the appeals court decision on the Maryland assault weapons ban is that it will be overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States. I have zero faith that courts at any level will adhere to the Constitution when it comes to firearms.

Matters in Malhuer, Oregon continue. Last week, the Pacific Patriots Network issued a call for their members to go to Burns to hold an unarmed protest. They demanded that the FBI leave Oregon, escorted by the PPN. That was last weekend, and thus far no word has emerged on what is really going on.

I wanted to talk to the PPN, but alas they only allow contact by email, which is understandable. They were made to look like total fools when several of their members spoke with heavily armed FBI agents on camera the week before the ambush on Highway 395, and then reported back that the FBI acted professionally, just as the PPN did. It turned out that none of their concerns about BLM activity were addressed. They were totally played by the government.

The government and their allies are already preparing the next battlefield. Consider this article in which the author uses spoon fed statistics to bolster the claim that right wing terrorists are a bigger threat to America than ISIS. Using anecdotal stories then connecting them to groups, some of which are likely riddled with government informants, the writer paints a picture of anti government types as violent right wing extremists.

But wait a second. Let us say for a moment that armed men occupied a piece of land scores of miles away from any federal official to protest the actions of those officials, though they knew the federal tendency would be to use its great power to seize their property, their freedom, and even take their lives.

The occupiers were armed, but they disclaimed violence unless it was visited on them first. They knew the government would be gunning for them. And when the government did make contact, one of them died violently, even though he had no gun in his hand. And no government official, state or federal so much as suffered a broken fingernail, and not a single shot was fired by any of the protesters who were detained, which would have normally precipitated return fire. And the government agents who committed the shooting are commanded by a government which had already painted them as violent despite their constant protestations they did not want a confrontation. They are the ones that set this chain of events in motion by inflating a protest into threats against them personally.

Just who are the violent extremists here? The men and women who are imprisoned for threats they couldn't carry out, or those who attacked them under the color of law?

Lest any reader think that the protesters are on the side of the angels, Virginia based tactical trainer Max Velocity has criticisms for the whole mess that he heaps on anyone and everyone, like crappy prison slop onto steel trays the protesters are choking down as you read this. Stand in line, folks, everyone but the loudmouths who approved of the death of Lavoy Finicum get a heaping helping.

Chew carefully and digest thoughtfully.

I agree Chris. I'm ticked off about a neighboring state, Virginia not recognizing concealed carry permits from 25 other states (including ours) that they previously had reciprocity agreements with. The AG (a Democrat) of VA made a unilateral decision and thus basically disenfranchised the voters of Virginia as well as neutered the Constitution.

Carter Welcomes Saudi 'Boots on Ground' Offer in anti-ISIL Campaign
[ALMANAR.LB] The US defense chief welcomed reports on Thursday about Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's willingness to deploy troops in Syria, noting that he would discuss the issue with his Saudi counterpart in Brussels next week.

During an interview with the Saudi al-Arabiya TV channel on Thursday, Saudi military front man Brigadier General Ahmed al-Asir
...Leb Salafist holy man with the usual grouch against Shiites. Currently on the run, he seems intent on reigniting the Leb civil war...
i said Riyadh "is ready to participate in any ground operations that the coalition may agree to carry out in Syria".

"That kind of news is very welcome. I look forward to discussing that with the Saudi defense minister next week - and other kinds of contributions that Saudi Arabia can make," Secretary of Defense Ash Carter told news hounds at at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.

Carter is going to meet defense ministers of 26 countries, which are part of the US-led coalition countering the so-called 'Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....

group in Belgian capital Brussels.

The US defense chief acknowledged that the Saudi government has indicated willingness to do more in the fight against ISIL, which western media reports revealed it receives funds from main regional countries including the Saudi.

"I should mention also Saudi Arabia has indicated a willingness to take the lead in marshaling some Muslim-majority countries," he said.

Carter said that the Netherlands also pledged to support anti-ISIL operations in Syria last week, in addition to the Dutch government's existing contributions to the campaign in Iraq.

"You see others stepping up, and the reason why I'm going to Brussels next week is to bring the full weight of the coalition behind accelerating the defeat of ISIL," Carter said.

Human rights watch praises Tunisia on judicial reforms
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Human Rights Watch
... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge....
has praised Tunisia on judicial reforms which it said amounted to a "significant breakthrough" in protecting the rights of detainees.

Parliament on Tuesday approved amendments to Article 13 of Tunisia's penal code to fall in line with the new constitution adopted two years ago as part of the country's political transition from dictatorship to democracy.

"Provisions to grant suspects the right to a lawyer from the onset of detention, and to shorten the maximum pre-charge detention are included in a revision of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CCP)," said the New York-based HRW.

"Tunisia's parliament made a significant breakthrough for human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
by approving proposed changes in detainee rights," it said.

"The new law has the potential to close loopholes that led to widespread abuses during the presidency of Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali" who was tossed in Tunisia's 2011 revolution, said Amna Guellali, country director for the rights group.

The new law takes effect on July 1.

HRW cautioned, however, that the law still has "several shortcomings" and urged the authorities to "adopt implementing legislation that could close the remaining loopholes."

Such legislation "should clarify that detention begins at the moment of arrest, to preempt alternative interpretations that would delay a detainee's access to a lawyer and presentation to a judge," it said.

Ghazi Mrabet, a lawyer and rights activist, told AFP he welcomed the amendments which he said could put an end to the use of violence against detainees and confessions being extracted under duress.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Nasrallah, Aoun is your sole president, so elect him
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Last week, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said his party was not obstructing Leb's presidential or municipal elections, and called on those concerned to attend parliamentary sessions to elect his presidential candidate, Christian MP Michel Aoun
...a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
How democratic and respectful of parliament and democracy! Nasrallah told MPs to either elect Aoun or continue to have no president - in other words, an ultimatum to parliament and the Lebanese people.

He said Hezbollah would emerge victorious over its rivals regarding regional developments, but then contradicted himself by saying: "Don't count on outside [powers] and let's [work together] to find an internal solution."

Shirking responsibilities
Hezbollah and the Future Movement, led by Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
, have been holding meetings, so if the intent to hold dialogue and meet half way is still there, why do they not agree on an internal solution regarding the presidency instead of defying one another via media outlets?

Why do Hezbollah MPs not go to parliament to elect their candidate while respecting democratic foundations? Whoever gets the majority of votes will win. Even if MPs are affiliated with political parties, it is their duty to elect a president. Boycotting elections of a president seriously harms the constitution and the political system. Obstructing constitutional deadlines is a violation of regulations. Attempts to impose a certain candidate resemble foreign interference - we in Leb have a bitter history of this.

Today, there is foreign tutelage hiding behind a Lebanese mask, and it is trying to seize control of the state and turn it into an Iranian proxy.

Iraq
19 ISIS Bad Guys die in al-Anbar
QAMISHLI – At least 19 militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) were killed on Friday in renewed attacks by Iraqi army forces in Ramadi city of Anbar province.

Clashes broke out between ISIS fighters and Iraqi army troops in the Bwailiya and Jazeerat Jibba in western Ramadi subsequent to an attempt by the army to expel the militant group from the two districts.

“Subsequent to fierce clashes, our forces were able to make progress against Daesh terrorists in western Ramadi,” Iraqi army officer Muhammad Jassim said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

“At least 19 Daesh terrorists were killed and dozens more wounded in the clashes,” the source said, adding that five Iraqi soldiers were killed in Friday’s clashes.

Jassim said that ISIS has intensified its offensives in northwestern Iraq, particularly in Haditha, in a bid to compensate its losses in Ramadi and other areas of Anbar province.

In the meantime, the U.S.-led coalition carried out several airstrikes on ISIS fighting positions near the Sajariyah in eastern Ramadi, where two ISIS vehicles and several machine guns were destroyed.

Afghanistan
17 Taliban Insurgents Killed in Kunduz Operation
At least 17 Taliban insurgents were killed in military operations in northern Kunduz province, local officials said on Thursday.

The operations were launched in Ali Abad district of the province after Taliban insurgents attacked military outposts on Wednesday and clashed with security forces, a provincial security official, Mohammad Masoum Safi said.

"Two senior commanders of the Taliban Mawlawi Neyazi and Mawlawi Abdul Hai are among the dead," he said.

However, he did not provide more details about the clashes.

Iraq
Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin: 10 die
[AlArabiya]. Iraqi officials say a string of roadside bombs and a shooting have left nine people dead and 33 wounded across the capital.

Thursday's violence comes one day after Iraqi authorities announced that construction had begun on a wall and trench around Baghdad to prevent militants and explosive-laden cars from entering the capital, where bombings and suicide attacks have been commonplace for over a decade.

Most attacks on Baghdad are linked to Sunni militants and tend to target members of the Shiite-dominated security forces and civilians.

The security and hospital officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Militants Attack UN Camp in Mali's Timbuktu
[ALMANAR.LB] Suspected terrorists attacked on Friday a UN military camp in the fabled city of Timbuktu in Mali's restive north, wounding at least one peacekeeper, security sources said.

Shots were still being heard in the area, a source in the UN peacekeeping force in Mali (MINUSMA) told AFP, indicating hours-long fighting.

"Six to seven terrorists arrived very early in the morning at a MINUSMA camp in Timbuktu. They blew up their vehicle before attacking the camp with mortars," the source said.

"One peacekeeper from Niger was wounded." the source said, adding that the camp had recently been evacuated by blue helmets from Niger but some soldiers had remained there.

A Malian military source said Malian troops were "fighting to neutralize the terrorists."

Northern Mali fell under the control of Tuareg rebels and terrorist groups linked to Al-Qaeda in 2012.

Large swathes of Mali remain lawless however despite a June peace deal between the former Tuareg rebels and rival pro-government armed groups.

FBI Team in Somalia to Investigate Mid-Air Explosion
A team of FBI agents has arrived in Somalia to help authorities in the East African nation investigate what caused an explosion this week inside a plane at 11,000 feet. Authorities from Somalia, the United States and other countries believe that a bomb was detonated in mid-air, just after the Hermes Airlines flight departed Mogadishu’s airport for Djibouti, according to sources familiar with the incident.

The A-321 jetliner executed an emergency landing and returned to the airport, but two passengers were hurt, and it’s believed one person may have been sucked out of the plane through a relatively small hole left by the explosion.

It is still unclear how a bomb would have been brought on-board or who could be responsible, but authorities are looking into whether the al Qaeda-linked terrorist group al-Shabab, based in Somalia, or even ISIS may be behind it, sources said.

Many of the passengers on the flight were originally scheduled to be on a Turkish Airlines flight, but the flight was canceled “due to operational reasons” and bad weather, according to Turkish Airlines spokesman Yahya Ustun.

The U.S. government offered Somali authorities any assistance, and the team of FBI agents arrived at the scene Friday, sources said. They are there for one purpose: to help the Somalis with any expertise or other assistance they may need.

#1  How much do you have to screw up in order to be assigned to a team going to Somalia?

#4  What's there to understand? Terrorist failed to blow up a plane and died in the most idiotic manner possible.

Seriously, who sets of an explosive in a plane that results in only ejecting yourself out? Is this a new sport for Jihadi's? See if they can hit a virgin from 10,000ft?
