Israeli firm helped FBI hack iPhone
h/t Instapundit
The Israeli mobile forensics firm Cellebrite helped the FBI hack into the iPhone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook, NBC reports, citing industry sources.

The firm has been rumored to be behind the FBI’s newfound ability to access the device, thanks to a previous and unconfirmed report from an Israeli newspaper.
Neither Cellebrite nor the Department of Justice has confirmed the reports.

The FBI has routinely contracted Cellebrite over the last five years. The company, which publicly boasts of its ability to hack into Apple devices, has received over $2 million in purchase orders from the agency since 2012.

Trump's Sloppy Populism
Backhanded compliment
Donald Trump's success has been the most perplexing phenomenon of this election cycle. Why on earth has this New York vulgarian resonated with a full third of Republican voters? Trump's appeal taps into a middle-class fear of American decline: crises from trade and immigration to debt and foreign policy are pulling down a once great America to the mediocre status of other flailing countries. Yet while Trump has proved Machiavellian in tapping into popular furor, his policy proposals are typically vague and at times preposterous.

VDH shows that there is such a thing as "backhanded criticism"

#2  Nothing surprising about it. People are mad. They are sick of being betrayed. Trump talked to them, told them what they wanted to hear. If he were for real he would be a hero. Sadly, he's just another lifelong liberal ready and eager to sell us all downriver.

#3  I feel a lot of labels are falling at this time as people are looking for a patron to protect their interests. If you believe that magically government is going shrink short of being burned down, I have bridge for sale for you. Avoiding open bloodshed and monumental disruptions means seeking protection and power for your group that has been victimized now for generations by patrons of other groups. They've consolidated the power. It's not going away. Either you grab it or be further victimized by it. There is no 'right man'. Make the best of what you got.

#8  When the "Respectable Right" is ineffective and corrupt (or perceived to be), people will look elsewhere for a champion, and their choice may or may not be a wise one.

This is ultimately on the GOPe, its fecklessness and its utter contempt for the base.

And Trump may be pretty benign compared to what comes next.

Barack Obama's Guide to World Leaders
by Jeffrey Goldberg

[The Atlantic] During the course of reporting on the Obama administration's foreign and defense policies over the past several years, I've gained a certain level of insight into its frustrations, proclivities, and predispositions in the international arena.
Yet Jeffrey, you still carry him fondly in your heart-of-hearts
President Obama himself is famously transactional when it comes to relations with other leaders; in my new article on his foreign policy, I make note of his strong belief that countries tend to act in what their leaders perceive to be their core interests, and I've come to see that Obama doesn't place enormous value in the notion that well-developed personal relationships between leaders could ever trump the cold-eyed pursuit of those interests.
Yeah, the only relationship he values is with himself, like any true narcissist
Nevertheless, he has intense relationships with many world leaders--and he has become, in his last years as president, a mentor to a handful of important new ones.
Lord, help us
In speaking over the years with senior officials in his administration and other close observers of the president's conduct of foreign relations, I've gathered impressions of how they parse the president's view of his counterparts in other countries. Sometimes, in interviews with me, the president has rendered his own judgments. Drawing on these conversations, I've attempted to place some of these leaders on a continuum reflecting the state of their relations with Obama--from actually warm to ice-cold."

Feds Give $270K Grant To Islamic Charity With Alleged Ties To Hamas, MB
[Daily Caller] The Obama administration recently gave a $270,000 grant to an Islamic charity that has been banned by Israel and the United Arab Emirates because of alleged financial ties to the terrorist group Hamas and to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provided the funds last month to the U.K.-based Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) for its work in Kenya, according to the federal spending database USASpending.gov.

The funds are earmarked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's global health security partner engagement initiative.

Homeland Security Jeh Johnson: Pub campaign rhetoric on Muslims harms security
[Reuters] Harsh rhetoric about Muslims by Republican candidates in the U.S. presidential election campaign is undermining national security efforts, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said on Tuesday.

Asked about comments by Republicans Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, Johnson told MSNBC in an interview that singling out a specific community hampers government efforts to build the connections needed to thwart possible attacks.

"Inflammatory comments about patrolling and securing Muslim neighbors or barring Muslims from entering this country, having an immigration policy based on religion, is counterproductive to our homeland security and national security interests," he said.

Johnson's remarks come in the wake of attacks last week in Belgium claimed by Islamic State militants that have stoked security fears across Europe and the West.

Second judge says Clinton email setup may have been in 'bad faith'
[Reuters] A second federal judge has taken the rare step of allowing a group suing for records from Hillary Clinton's time as U.S. secretary of state to seek sworn testimony from officials, saying there was "evidence of government wrong-doing and bad faith."

The language in Judge Royce Lamberth's order undercut the Democratic presidential contender's assertion she was allowed to set up a private email server in her home for her work as the country's top diplomat and that the arrangement was not particularly unusual.

He described Clinton's email arrangement as "extraordinary" in his order filed on Tuesday in federal district court in Washington.

Referring to the State Department, Clinton and Clinton's aides, he said there had been "constantly shape shifting admissions by the Government and the former government officials."

Spokesmen for Clinton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal (Dem) Vetoes Religious Liberty Bill
[PJ] Governor Nathan Deal has vetoed a controversial bill in Georgia that would protect churches and faith-based institutions from having to perform ceremonies or hire employees that do not line up with the organizations' religious beliefs.
That's right Georgia, just keep on electing democrats.
The Republican announced his decision during a news conference in his office at the Georgia Capitol, saying, "I have examined the protections that this bill proposes to provide to the faith-based community and I can find no examples of any of those circumstances occurring in our state." Deal added, "I do not think that we have to discriminate against anyone to protect the faith-based community in Georgia."

Western Civ through that bit time last go around known as the Thirty Years War, with a little side show that tagged England with a Civil War. The Founders decided that it was something best left up to the people to 'tolerate' other people's beliefs.

Amendment I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

I guess we will have to relearn the hard way.

FBI Investigating Reports Of 17 Men Chanting, Firing Off Shots In Apple Valley
The FBI on Tuesday continued to investigate an incident in which 17 men were detained for reportedly firing off hundreds of rounds in a remote part of Apple Valley.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies and an FBI agent responded to the scene Sunday morning and detained the men -- reportedly all of Middle Eastern descent -- who were camping out in the Deep Creek Hot Springs area Sunday morning, authorities said.

A 911 caller reported hearing over 100 shots fired and seeing five to seven men wearing turbans and shooting "assault rifles, handguns, and shotguns," according to a Sheriff’s Department statement.

A county sheriff’s helicopter located the men walking near a creek with backpacks "and other items", The Los Angeles Times reported.

Officials say the men were cooperative as they were detained and searched.

Several handguns, a rifle, and a shotgun were found at the scene, but a records check found all the weapons were registered with the exception of the rifle, which reportedly didn’t have a serial number because it was purchased in parts, an FBI spokesperson told The Times.

Police scanner traffic posted online by the Victor Valley News Group described "a large group of subjects wearing turbans and chanting" at the scene.

"They were up all night chanting ‘Allah akbar’-type stuff," an unidentified officer is heard saying on the audio recording.

None of the hikers interviewed by Sheriff’s investigators say they witnessed any shots being fired, according to Sheriff’s officials.

A photo of the arrests showing several men handcuffed at the scene was posted by the Victor Valley News Group but was not immediately confirmed by authorities.

All 17 men were eventually released because Sheriff’s investigators say they had no outstanding warrants or criminal histories.

"There was no evidence found that a crime had been committed by any of the subjects who were detained and they were released," a Sheriff’s spokesperson said.

The FBI will conduct further interviews with the men to determine if any crimes were committed.

Nearby residents said they were concerned by the activity.

"If there’s something going on wouldn’t you want your local police or law enforcement to take care of it so that citizens like you or myself don’t have to ate it into their own hands?" said a resident, Eliseo Rodriguez.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea Tells its People to Prepare For Famine
You guys just keep on informing on each other and wondering why your lives are so hard.
North Korea is telling its citizens to prepare for famine.
After that, they can prepare for global warming.
State-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun published an editorial Monday telling the people of North Korea that food shortages and economic hardship are on the horizon, Time reports.
Grandpa, you a$$hole, you fought in that war! Tell us when this "Revolution" is supposed to be over?
The news comes less than a month after the United Nations Security Council handed down harsh sanctions for North Korea continuing its nuclear and missile programs. The sanctions, targeted at the nation's elite and their assets, prohibit certain luxury items and ban exports of resources being used to finance the country's weapons pursuit.
Let them eat yellowcake.
A result of this struggle, the editorial says, "We may have to go on an arduous march, during which we will have to chew the roots of plants once again," invoking a metaphor used by North Korean leadership for the four-year famine in the country beginning in 1994, during which approximately 3 million people died.
Maybe they could dig them up and use them for fertilizer.
"The road to revolution is long and arduous," it continued, calling for renewed support for Kim Jong Un in the form of a "70-day campaign of loyalty" that involves each already-struggling residents of Pyongyang donating two pounds of rice per month to state warehouses. Farmers are also being forced to "donate" portions of their crops to the military.

Olde Tyme Religion
The three powerful scholars fueling Islamic State's hate
[Reuters] Like other militant movements, especially al Qaeda and its offshoots, Islamic State is inspired by a group of religious scholars across Islam's history who advocated the idea of declaring other Muslims as infidels or apostates, and justifying their killing. This notion of takfir is central to the ideology of most contemporary Islamic militant groups, who have killed far more Muslims than non-Muslims. Islamic State's leaders cherry-pick the sources and scholars they choose to imitate...Like its predecessors, Islamic State reads Islam's history and its foundational texts selectively, choosing the parts and thinkers who fit into its vision of Sunni dominance, brutality and constant war with pretty much everyone else.

also, contrary to mohammad Bassi's statement that,

"...the group justifies its violence, especially against civilians, with selective interpretations of Islamic texts and scholars that are rejected by the vast majority of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims...."

the vast majority of the world's muslims have never read these 'selective interpretations' and, in fact, the vast majority of the world's muslims don't understand the dialect of arabic in the Koran.

French Terror Suspect Fights Dutch Extradition
This is the second terror suspect to fight extradition to France. Why?
[AnNahar] A French terror suspect tossed in the calaboose
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
in weekend raids in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam is fighting his extradition to La Belle France, Dutch prosecutors said Tuesday.

The 32-year-old, identified by Dutch media only as Anis B., will remain in jug in the Netherlands, where a court has to decide within 90 days whether to grant a request from Gay Paree to extradite him, the Amsterdam prosecutor said in a statement.

The man is wanted by La Belle France for "involvement in a criminal organization linked to a terrorist enterprise," the prosecutor said.

He was arrested on Sunday at Gay Paree's request suspected of receiving orders from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group to attack targets in La Belle France.

He appeared before an Amsterdam court on Tuesday and was remanded in jug. The court also ruled he could only have contact with his lawyers and not with other people.

He must appear again this time in a public hearing within 60 days. But no date has been set for that.

La Belle France had sought Anis B.'s arrest after French police there said they had thwarted an attack by a man called Reda Kriket, 34, who was caught on Thursday.

French police discovered several assault rifles and explosives at Kriket's apartment in a Gay Paree suburb.

Heavily-armed Dutch police then raided a home in the west of Rotterdam late Sunday following the French investigation.

Police found ammunition, SIM cards, hard drives, cash and drugs in the raids, during which several houses in the area were evacuated.

Three other men were also detained in the operation, including two suspects of Algerian origin aged 43 and 47. No immediate details were available about the third man.

They are also being held on suspicion of involvement in terror attacks, Dutch media reported.

The Netherlands was already on heightened alert after the airport and metro attacks in Brussels a week ago, with security stepped up at airports and train stations and border controls tightened.

Dutch Justice Minister Ard van der Steur on Tuesday told parliament he expected Anis B. "to be extradited to La Belle France soon."

-Land of the Free
Guns Won’t Protect You, Old People, You’re Too Old And Weak
Read the whole thing.
[CaptainsJournal] Yes, that’s really him. He makes this too easy, yes?

So this commentary is such sewage that it’s difficult to know where to begin, and I won’t offer a complete commentary on his evil antics. Ignore for a moment what a steaming pile of shit Gawker is. Ignore the falsity of this premise on guns and the elderly. Those of us who do gun news searches every day, multiple times per day, know how much guns have helped the elderly and how they need them in an era of increased crime (especially in gang infested areas). Getting into the details of his premise is what he wants you to do. I want you to understand the boy, Hamilton Nolan.

How could such a monster exist, you ask? Well, I am reminded once of a group of Deacons at a church (not mine) whom I overheard at work, and they were having to assist a divorcee woman whose husband left her because he wanted to screw around with a younger woman. Their assistance involved moving furniture because she could no longer afford the home, repair to the home so that it could sell, and all manner of things families do when they are together. They didn’t begrudge it, mind you, but every minute they spent doing this was a minute they couldn’t spend doing the same thing for their families.

They decided that they were going to track down this dude and whip his ass for what he did. There are no longer consequences, they believed, and there had to be some. No-fault divorce was for the piss ant court system. They found fault, and they were going to enforce their punishment. I don’t know what ended up happening. In a way, Hamilton is like that adulterer husband. Honoring your father and mother is one of the ten commandments too. And recall what we’ve discussed regarding the ten commandments – it is called constitutional law, or the moral law. All sorts of case law and other principles come from it. So for example, we are told to “rise before the hoary head” in respect for our elders (Lev 19:32, or “stand up in the presence of the aged”). Boy-Hamilton needs to have someone take him out behind the building and whip his ass. It won’t happen of course, and that goes to show you how morally corrupt America has become. In a morally upright America, Hamilton would get his ass whipped for disrespecting his elders.

The final thing I want to leave you with is just what kind of boy Hamilton is. Hamilton lives in a very dark world, where he sees himself aging (even though apparently at his age he still has acne, he will one day grow old). He doesn’t want to age because he probably believes that when you die, your body cools to ambient temperature and that’s the end. Hamilton probably never had a spanking as a child. His mommy and daddy – if he had one – let him do whatever the hell he wanted to do. He had no boundaries. He needed boundaries. He probably begged for boundaries. But his parents probably listened to the progressives on family health.

The awful public school system taught him to hate everything and everyone, including himself. His hatred is so intense, so sweeping and so ubiquitous that he hates the very predecessors who brought him into being. He hates his elders because he hates who he is and wishes he didn’t exist. He wears effete, metrosexual clothing as an act of self deprecation, and his writing consists of venom to be spewed towards anything that gets in the way.

Hamilton is a dipshit sad, sad boy. Don’t be like Hamilton.

For Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Trampler of Homs...
, recapturing the historic town represents a strategic political coup through which he hopes to convince the West that the Syrian army is a credible partner in combating terrorism as it ramps up the fight against Islamic State.

It is an awkward argument that the U.S. has repeatedly rebuffed. Officials in Washington are quick to point out that it was Assad's brutal crackdown on his own people that created the kind of vacuum that allowed hard boyz like ISIS to flourish in the first place.

An alliance between the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS - similar to the assistance and training provided to the Iraqi military on the other front in the war - seems out of the question.

Team of Russian Bomb Disposal Experts Heads to Syria to Demine Palmyra
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] A team of Russian bomb disposal experts has headed to Syria to help defuse mines planted by ISIL hard boyz in Palmyra before they were defeated by the army who established control over the city few days ago.

Russian Zvezda TV channel said Tuesday the expert team from the International Mine Action Center of the Russian Armed Forces have taken off from Chkalovsky Airport heading to Syria on board a military aircraft.

Zvezda TV added the aircraft is also carrying on board robots and equipment to remove mines and explosives.

Earlier, a Russian military source announced that a total of 100 Russian military engineers and dog trainers will be sent to Syria to help demine Palmyra.

The announcement of the Russian participation in the demining process along with the Syrian army was made by the Russian General Staff yesterday.

French warship seizes Somalia-bound weapons
French Navy frigate FS Provence has intercepted a large weapons cache from a small boat (dhow) sailing towards Somalia. Several hundred machine guns, anti-tank weapons and AK47 assault riffles were among the weapons seized from the dhow.

The weapons smugglers were spotted heading toward Somalia by Provence’s Caïman helicopter whilst it was undertaking routine surveillance in the Northern Indian Ocean. Provence boarded the vessel and determined that it was not registered in any country. The ship’s boarding team then searched it and discovered the weapons.

As illicit weapons were deemed to be destined for Somalia, they were seized under the United Nations Security Council mandated arms embargo in accordance with UNSCR 2244(2015). The Commanding Officer of Provence commented: “This success remains a collective one, showing the value of like-minded nations committing ships and aircraft for the common good.”

“France has been supporting Combined Maritime Forces operations since their inception. This seizure is another French contribution to the stabilisation of the region,” said a CMF spokesperson.

The FREMM frigate is currently part of the Combined Task Force 150 within Combined Maritime Forces, an international maritime security and counter terrorism group.

Japan protests against possible Rooshun naval base on disputed Kuril island chain
Japan has conveyed its concern to Moscow over possible Russian plans to build a naval base on a western Pacific island chain, part of which is claimed by Tokyo. Tokyo’s action follows Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu’s comment last week that Russia would study the possibility of building a naval base on what it calls the Kuril islands.
Russia is doing to Japan what Japan is doing to China...
Japan claims a southern segment of the island chain, which was seized by Soviet troops at the end of the second world war. The territorial row has kept the two countries from signing a formal peace treaty since.

“We’ve informed the Russian side through a diplomatic channel that we are concerned about the comment by Defence Minister Shoigu,” the chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, told a regular news conference. “We’ve also told them that if this led to the reinforcement of Russian military infrastructure on the Northern Territories, that would be incompatible with Japan’s stance and regrettable.”

Besides the potential construction of a naval base, Shoigu also said last week Russia would this year deploy some of its newest missile defence systems and drones on the Kuril islands.

ISIS troops attack Syrian Army HQ in Homs
[ARA News] HOMS ــ Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) launched Tuesday an offensive on the regime’s army forces in Syria’s province of Homs, killing at least eight soldiers and wounding dozens more, local sources reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Homs, rights activist Amr al-Mousa said that ISIS carried out a suicide operation against the regime’s army in the vicinity of Mount Jubail, southwest of the strategic Christian town of al-Qaryatain, killing eight soldiers and wounding dozens others.

The hardline group used a SUV loaded with explosives in its attack, according to the source.

“On Tuesday midnight, ISIS launched another attack on the regime’s forces in the area, causing the death of over ten soldiers,” al-Mousa said, pointing out that ISIS has targeted strongholds of the Syria regime’s army with heavy and medium weapons in a bid to prevent their progress.

In the meantime, Russian warplanes conducted dozens of air raids on Homs and its surrounding villages in addition to the vicinity of Mount Jubail.

Syrian army forces were able to control the hill of Hazm al-Gharbiyat in the mountain range of al-Hazm southwestern the Qaryatain town on Monday midnight.

Syrian army forcesــ supported by Russian air forceــ seek to take over the key town of al-Qaryatain, trying to achieve a new victory in the northern countryside of Homs at the expense of ISIS, especially after taking over the historic city of Palmyra days ago.

Subsequent to taking over Palmyra earlier last year, ISIS has been expanding its control over key areas in Homs province, including the Christian town of Qaryatainــwhich links south Syria with its north.

In August 2015, the militant group abducted about 220 civilians, including at least 60 Christians, after seizing the key town al-Qaryatain in the countryside of Homs, according to local activists.

SSU Commando shot dead in Karimabad
KARACHI: A Special Security Unit Commando who performs duty at the state guest house was shot dead on his way home in the Karimabad area on Tuesday morning, police said.

Deputy-Inspector General West Feroze Shah said Zahid Jaffri performed guard duties at the state guest house, where President Mamnoon Hussain stays during his visits to Karachi for security reasons.

Central Senior Superintendent Police Muqaddas Haider said it was possible the guard was a victim of target killing but police are unsure about the motive of the murder.

The guard was shot in the head four times from the back with a 9mm pistol, the SSP said.

Jaffri was shot dead in a busy part of Karimabad, the DIG-West said, adding that initial reports suggest an unidentified man on a motorcycle attacked the guard, but witnesses are being questioned for more details.

No signs of joint action
[DAWN] THE Lahore park bombing ought to have been a moment of clarity. All institutions of the state -- federal, provincial, civilian and military -- need to work together, immediately, purposefully and on a sustained basis, if terrorism and militancy are to be defeated.

Yet, in the very moment that the country needed its leaders to demonstrate resolve and unity, an utterly befuddling signal has been sent.

Instead of jointly trying to address the challenge that the Lahore bombing has created, the army and politicianships appear to have withdrawn into their respective camps.

US orders diplomatic, military families out of south Turkey
[Ynet] The State Department and Pentagon ordered the families of U.S. diplomats and military personnel to leave posts in southern The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on Tuesday due to "increased threats from terrorist groups" in the country.

The two agencies said dependents of American staffers at the U.S. consulate in Adana, the Incirlik air base and two other locations must leave. The so-called "ordered departure" notice means the relocation costs will be covered by the government.

The orders cover the Adana consulate, U.S. military dependents in Incirlik, Ismir and Mugla as well as family of U.S. government civilians at Ismir and Mugla. The State Department also restricted official travel to that which it considers "mission critical." Cook said that the order does not affect about 100 family members who are based in Istanbul and Ankara.

The decision comes a day after Israel issued a new travel advisory for Turkey, warning its citizens to leave the country as soon as possible and avoid any traveling there.

He flew back to Canada a month later.

The RCMP had initially sought a court order against Mohammed requiring him to be on good behavior under a controversial law aimed at preventing attacks and stopping people from travelling abroad to join Lion of Islam groups.

"While there was no indication of any plans for a domestic attack, we must remain committed to preventing individuals from traveling abroad to gain training and expertise that could be used in the planning and implementation of future attacks on Canadian soil," RCMP Superintendent Lise Crouch was quoted as saying after the arrest.

About 60 Canadians who traveled abroad to join terror groups are now back in the country, and another 180 are estimated to be overseas engaged with Lion of Islams, Canada's spy chief Michel Coulombe told a newspaper last month.

Three Thai policemen killed in Narathiwat ambush
[Bangkok Post] Three policemen were killed and six others injured, four seriously, in an ambush by militants in Narathiwat province on Tuesday afternoon.

The attack occurred on a main road in Rangae district. The nine-man patrol was heading toward Chanae police station, when hidden attackers fired grenades at the vehicle from the side of the road. The vehicle veered out of control and hit a tree. The militants then emerged from hiding and fired assault weapons at the vehicle, killing three policemen and injuring six others.

Police, soldiers and bomb disposal officers who raced to the scene found the crashed police pickup truck riddled with bullet holes still against the tree. The three slain men were found inside the vehicle with multiple gunshot injuries. The injured officers had been taken to a nearby hospital before the reinforcements arrived.

Transparency absent at all levels of climate fund disbursement
[Dhaka Tribune] Transparency is absent at all levels, in the governments of developing nations, donor agencies, NGOs and in developed countries which should disburse climate finance, speakers said at a climate change discussion yesterday.

An attitude of transparency should be shown at all levels, from fundraising to implementing projects that tackle the negative impacts of global warming, they said at the Integrity Dialogue on Climate Change Adaptation Finance: Transparency, Accountability and Participation.

"The government already spent much money to tackle several projects, but that does not mean funds will return proper output," said Dr Saleemul Huq, director of International Centre for Climate Change and Development.

Developed countries often refrain from their funding pledges, the speakers also said.

Citing an example of the "New" and "Additional" fund commitment by developed countries as climate finance, Dr Fazle Rabbi Sadeque Ahmed, project coordinator of Community Climate Change Project, said only 33% of these funds are really new; the rest are formerly declared.

He said developed countries have pledged to give $10.3 billion to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) till date, but the fund holds only $6.8 billion.

Besides this, developed countries never prioritise the demand of "financing balance between Adaptation and Mitigation," which developing countries have long desired, he added.

Sanjoy Vashisht, director of Climate Action Network in South Asia, said the climate finance is supposed to be fixed by the "Polluters pay Principle."

Yet ironically, the polluters are fixing the rate and modalities of climate finance, he added.

Prof Emeritus Ainun Nishat said all stakeholders, including government agencies and donor agencies, should be brought under close accountability, as many of their capacity-building projects needlessly waste money.

The day-long international conference, attended by foreign delegates working on climate change, was organised by Transparency International Bangladesh.

Police official suspended over Taliban rocket attack on parliament building
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A senior police official has been suspended over a rocket attack by the Talibs on the newly-built parliament building in capital Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
Deputy front man for the Ministry of Interior Najib Danish said the commander of the 13th police district was suspended over the rocket attack.

He said four other officials were also suspended over the rocket attack as an investigation is underway regarding the incident.

Without elaborating further, Danish said the decision to suspended the top police official has been taken by the leadership of Interior Ministry following the rocket attack.

At least four rockets were fired on the parliament building in Dar-ul-Aman area of the city on Monday as security bigshots were summoned to brief the politicians regarding the security situation of the country.

A number of the rockets impacted the parliament building and left damages to the newly-built building but no casualties were reported.

The Taliban group grabbed credit behind the rocket attack.

The new parliament building has been built with the financial support of India and was inaugurated during a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kabul late in December last year.

Egyptian president fires top auditor after alleging government corruption
[BDLIVE.CO.ZA] President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi on Monday sacked Egypt’s top auditor, who had stirred controversy by publicly concluding that government corruption had cost the country billions of dollars.

Hesham Geneina came under heavy fire from bigwigs and pro-government media after he alleged widespread graft in newspaper interviews at the end of last year.

Mr Sisi appointed a presidential commission that quickly concluded that Mr Geneina had misled the public by saying corruption had cost 600-billion Egyptian pounds (about $76bn) over a four-year period.

In a decree, the presidency did not say why Mr Geneina was dismissed but the move came hours after the State Security Prosecution said his findings were truthful inaccurate.

Mr Sisi, who as army chief removed Egypt’s first freely-elected president in 2013, has made fighting corruption a top priority for the government.
Working well, isn't it...
Mr Geneina’s removal is likely to raise questions about Egypt’s commitment to fighting graft, as it struggles to rebuild an economy hammered by years of political turmoil following a 2011 uprising that toppled veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak

Houthis claim Daesh emir titzup in Taiz, andhis little mufti, too!
Emir of the so-called 'Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant' (ISIL) takfiri group in Yemeni, Abu Ayyoub Al Ansari, as well as the ISIL Religious Jurist, aka Abu Hemma, were killed on Tuesday during a major army operation south of Yemen.

The Yemeni army and Popular Committees managed to carry out a succeeding military operation in the province of Taiz, south of capital Sanaa, during which Ansari and Abu Hemma were killed, a military source in Yemen said.

"The missile and artillery units in the army and Popular Committees fired missiles at assembly points of the aggression mercenaries and invaders in the southern village of Thobab city, killing and wounding a large number of them, including elements of the most ISIL wanted commanders," he said.

The source pointed out that "a US helicopter tried to rescue Ansari, but to no avail," pointing out that "Abu Hemma has issued execution sentences against prisoners who were executed by ISIL in the southern provinces. "

The source also praised the "qualitative operation carried out by the army and the heroes of the Popular Committees in the framework of the duties assigned to them in dealing with al-Qaeda, ISIL and aggression mercenaries and invaders and so the world would get rid of their evil."

Moreover, the source hailed the achievements by the army and Popular Committees in defeating al-Qaeda and Saudi aggression mercenaries to cleanse the nation and prevent terrorism risks.

Gunmen attack army base in northern Mogadishu
Armed men believed to Al shabaab members have attacked a Somali army base in northern Mogadishu on Monday night, the latest in series of assaults on Government troops and AMISOM in the capital.

The attack began after the assailants using machine guns and rocket propelled grenades launchers stormed the military base located in Suqa Holaha, a volatile area in Mogadishu’s Huriwa district.
This is 'light and desultory fighting' in the Associated Press stylebook...
There were no immediate official details about the casualty figures as result of the night-time attack on military base in Suqa Holaha village in Huriwa district.

No group has yet claimed credit for the attack, but Al shabaab militants usually carry out such daring attacks on army bases and government institutions in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.

Brazil leader’s coalition collapses as impeachment looms
[BDLIVE.CO.ZA] Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff’s chances of surviving impeachment nosedived on Tuesday when her ruling coalition’s main partner jumped ship and went into opposition.

The Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), the country’s largest party, voted to end its alliance with Ms Rousseff’s leftist Workers’ Party, or PT, immediately.

Ms Rousseff canceled a trip to a nuclear security summit in Washington later on Tuesday amid the political crisis.

Senator Romero Juca, the party vice-president, made the "historic" announcement after a rapid meeting on Tuesday. The meeting, broadcast live on national television, was the culmination of a long divorce with Ms Rousseff, leaving Brazil’s first female president grasping at straws as she tries to stay in power.

The vote and announcement took no more than three minutes and was accompanied by singing of the national anthem and shouts of "PT out!"

The split plunges Ms Rousseff’s government into crisis mode and, more seriously, greatly reduces her chances of mustering the one third of votes in the lower house of Congress that she needs to defeat a first impeachment vote expected in April.

"If you look at the numbers, that’s basically it," said Everaldo Moraes, a political science professor at Brasilia National University.

If the lower house votes in favor, an impeachment trial would start in the Senate, where a two-thirds vote would force Ms Rousseff from office.

Indian defence minister keeps himself aloof from Pathankot JIT
[DAWN] As Pakistain’s five-member team investigating the Pathankot terror attack received DNA samples of the gunnies from Indian Sherlocks, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar seemed to pour scorn on the visit on Monday.

Press Trust of India said Mr Parrikar had got his hands off the controversy over the Joint Investigation Team’s visit to the Pathankot airbase on Tuesday.

Mr Parrikar said the "scene of the crime" was under the control of Home Ministry’s National Investigating Agency and it was up to the agency to decide who to allow there or not.

Noting that no permission has been given by the Defence Ministry for entry into the airbase, he said that the "scene of the crime", a "non-sensitive" area, has been completely barricaded, including visually, on his orders and no defence asset would be used to facilitate the visit of the Pak team.

"However,
there's more than one way to stuff a chicken...
an area where the actual crime had taken place had been handed over to NIA long back which is conducting the entire investigation. Who will be taken there, who will probe, depends on the decision of NIA," Mr Parrikar said replying to questions here on the sidelines of Defexpo.

Tata Steel expected to sell British plants: union
I was just watching this movie yesterday. It was made in 1974 or thereabouts, judging from the hairstyles. Only it was a coal company going out of business. The victim's old lover dunnit.
[FRANCE24] Indian steel giant Tata Steel is expected to sell its British plants, a union front man said Tuesday, a move that could put thousands of jobs at risk in a further blow to Britannia's crisis-hit steel industry.

Union representatives had travelled to Mumbai to try to convince Tata to invest in Britannia, where the steel industry is in deep crisis, with businesses blaming high energy costs and cheaper Chinese imports.

"We understand that they're going to announce that they'll divest from their UK plants but we're still waiting for official confirmation on that," Community union front man Matt Ball told AFP.

Tata Steel did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tata had previously announced a series of job cuts at its Port Talbot site in Wales, where it employs 4,000 people, with another 3,000 employed as contractors and temporary workers.

Welsh politician Leanne Wood said the prospect was deeply concerning.

"If reports from Mumbai are true, it's devastating," Wood wrote on Twitter. "All must work together now to save our steel industry."

Police watch as locals attack migrants in Algeria
[OBSERVERS.FRANCE24] Dozens of migrants colonists were maimed last Friday when they were attacked by locals in the town of Béchar, some 1,000 kilometres south of the Algerian capital, Algiers. Our Observer says that despite the presence of coppers, it was several hours before they did anything to stop the violence.

Towards midday on Friday, March 25, dozens of people from Béchar began throwing rocks at an abandoned shopping centre where a group of migrants colonists were living. The violence kicked off after a local resident accused one of the migrants colonists of trying to rape a little girl. But no crime was ever reported to coppers, and according to a local journalist covering the story, no one has pressed charges for attempted rape in any of the town's cop shoppes.

Most of the sub-Saharan migrants colonists living in Béchar arrived in the city fairly recently from Mali, Gabon, Senegal

The attack lasted for a few hours before the migrants colonists were evacuated by security forces to neighbouring cities including Oran, Adrar and Tamanrasset, to the south.

The aesthetics of terror
[DAWN] A SUNDAY evening in spring at a park in the middle of a crowded city; the squeals of children, laughter, joy and general merriment. It was what terror wishes most to mar with its cruel infliction of death, and it is indeed where terror struck. Even as Pakistain’s album of horrors lies full, this Sunday past brought another lurid page, another tragedy to add to what is an achingly long list. When the bodies were counted, and so many were so small, more than 70 lay dead and over 200 were maimed, some undoubtedly likely to perish in the days to come. According to news reports, many families perished in halves or wholes; one big brood visiting from Sanghar in Sindh lost eight family members.

Even before the bodies were counted, the lists of injured and dead posted on hospital bulletin boards for distraught relatives to read over and over, there was a claim of responsibility. The Jamaatul Ahrar
...A Pak Taliban splinter group that split off from the Mullah Fazlullah faction because it wasn't violent enough...
, a splinter group of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain, claimed it had carried out the attack, releasing not only a picture of the jacket wallah but a promise of their own video of the attack. Their targets, they said, had been those celebrating Easter; the fact that they were families and children did nothing to temper the death sentence that the group wished to deliver.

Japan extends military reach in disputed East China Sea
Japan has switched on a radar station in the East China Sea, giving it a permanent intelligence-gathering post close to Taiwan and a group of disputed islands, in a move that will antagonise Beijing.

The new base on the island of Yonaguni is at the western extreme of a string of Japanese islands in the East China Sea, 150km (90 miles) south of the disputed islands known as the Senkaku islands in Japan and the Diaoyu in China.

China has long claimed most of the South China Sea, though some areas are also claimed by Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei. Japan has been mired for many years in a territorial dispute with China over the East China Sea islands.

“Until yesterday, there was no coastal observation unit west of the main Okinawa island. It was a vacuum we needed to fill,” said Daigo Shiomitsu, a lieutenant colonel who commands the new base on Yonaguni. “It means we can keep watch on territory surrounding Japan and respond to all situations.”

Shiomitsu on Monday attended a ceremony at the base with 160 military personnel and about 50 dignitaries. Construction of some buildings, which feature white walls and traditional Okinawan red-tiled roofs, is still unfinished.

The 30 sq km (11 sq mile) island is home to 1,500 people, who mostly raise cattle and grow sugar cane. The base contingent and family members will increase the population by a fifth.

“This radar station is going to irritate China,” said Nozomu Yoshitomi, a professor at Nihon University and a retired major general in the Japanese military.

In addition to being a listening post, the facility could be used a base for military operations in the region, he added.

Afghanistan
Explosion in capital Kabul leaves 4 policemen wounded
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least four coppers sustained injuries in an kaboom in capital Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
earlier tonight which followed hours after a an kaboom left at least four people dead and fifteen others maimed.

A security official in the 5th police district of the city said the incident took place around 8:00 pm local time which was triggered by an improvised bomb targeting a police vehicle.

The official further added that the blast took place in Company area of the city as they were crossing the area.

No group including the Talibs has so far grabbed credit behind the two incidents that caused panic among the Kabul residents.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant during the past several months across the country, including capital Kabul.

The Talibs continued to their offensive in the winter time which has been unprecedented as the group’s violence was gradually reducing the winter times.

This comes as the Afghan government has been busy to put an end to the ongoing violence through reconciliation process which has not yielded any positive result so far.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
the Afghan security officials are predicting a persistent violence by the Talibs during the summer time as the group has rejected proposed peace talks with the Afghan government.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Blue on blue: al-Nusra, ISIS troops battle it out in Qalamoun
[ARA News] QALAMOUN – At least 17 militants of the Nusra Front (Syria’s branch of al-Qaeda) were killed during clashes with the radical group the Islamic State (ISIS) in western Qalamoun near Syria’s capital Damascus, local sources reported on Tuesday.

“The Nusra Front launched a surprise attack on ISIS strongholds in the valleys of az-Zamrani and Martiba in the western Qalamoun near the Lebanese border, led to the outbreak of fierce clashes between the two sides. The clashes continued until Tuesday midnight,” media activist Yasser Hussein told ARA News in Qalamoun.

“ISIS was able to repel the Nusra attack, killing 17 militants of the Nusra and injuring over a dozen more, forcing it to retreat from the region,” Hussein reported, citing pro-ISIS military sources.

On the other hand, sources close to ISIS confirmed that at least 12 militants from ISIS were killed during the clashes, including the group’s military commander in Qalamoun”Abu Azzam”.

Over the past few days, the areas in western Qalamoun witnessed fierce battles between the two radical groups, especially after the Nusra Front, along with other rebel factions, waged a military campaign against ISIS in the area in a bid to eliminate its presence in the region.

The Nusra Front is leading a united militant entity in Idlib province and the Qalamoun Hights under the banner of al-Fatih Army ــwhich has made a significant progress at the expense of pro-regime forces, especially in Idlib.

In 2015, the leadership of al-Nusra Front called on Syrian rebel factions in Damascus to unify under one military entity similar to al-Fatih Army in Idlib and Qalamoun.

Dutch warned Belgium about Brussels bombers days before attacks
[FRANCE24] The Netherlands notified Belgium about the criminal backgrounds and suspected terrorist links of jacket wallahs Ibrahim and Khalid El Bakraoui just five days before the Brussels attacks, the Dutch justice minister said Tuesday.

Answering questions in the Dutch parliament, Justice Minister Ard van der Steur said Dutch police had received an FBI report on March 16 "in which there was notification of Ibrahim El Bakraoui and his brother Khalid's criminal backgrounds and Khalid's terrorist background".

The next day "the issue came up during bilateral contact between the Dutch and Belgian police", said Van der Steur. "The radical background of both the brothers was discussed."

He also confirmed US media reports that Ibrahim was on a US terror list, saying he "was placed on an American surveillance list on September 25, 2015, a list made by the FBI terrorist screening centre".

Ibrahim El Bakraoui was one of two bombers who blew themselves up at Brussels airport on March 22. His brother Khalid went kaboom! at Maalbeek metro station.

Belgium's federal police service, however, denied that it had received any information from the FBI about the Bakraoui brothers.

There was "no mention of the message that the FBI sent to the Dutch police" in the meeting with Dutch authorities, it said. Instead they discussed a police raid in Brussels on March 15, in which an Algerian Death Eater with links to Gay Paree attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam was captured. Khalid El Bakraoui is believed to have rented the flat where the raid took place using a false name.

The Dutch minister's revelations come as Belgian authorities continued Tuesday to hunt for a bomb suspect who remains on the run, a week after the deadly blasts in the Belgian capital that killed 32.

Under pressure at home and abroad over an apparent series of missed clues about criminals linked to jihadist networks, the Belgian government has admitted mistakes were made.
An Nahar adds:
Adding to the recriminations, Brussels mayor Yvan Mayeur said he regretted the release of the man identified by Belgian media as Faycal Cheffou, who claimed to be a freelance journalist. Hinting at suspicions that the man was a jihadist recruiter, he told French media: "There is a very thin line between an agitated radical and a radical recruiter, and in this case the judge probably didn't want to cross that line."

The man's lawyer Olivier Martins told RTBF television that his client was let go because he had an alibi.

"He gave an alibi based on telephone analysis which showed that he was at home at the time of the attacks," Martins was quoted as saying.

Caribbean-Latin America
Bolivian president's ex ordered to present love child
[FRANCE24] A Bolivian court ordered President Evo Morales's ex-girlfriend Tuesday to present the child she says he fathered with her nearly a decade ago, a son the leftist leader insists has died.

The dispute is at the center of a political drama that has gripped Bolivia since an investigative journalist revealed Morales's relationship with Gabriela Zapata, a high-powered executive who is now accused of abusing her influence to win contracts for the Chinese company where she worked.

Morales has acknowledged he had a child with Zapata, whom he says he dated from 2005 to 2007. But he says the boy died soon after birth, while her family insists he is alive.

Confusing matters further, Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera later said the baby never existed.

Judge Elsa Sangueza ordered Zapata, 28, to present the child in family court "for the purpose of conducting an interview in private," said a ruling published in the Bolivian press.

The ruling is a win for Morales, 56, who took Zapata to court earlier this month to make her prove the boy is alive.

Zapata is currently in jail pending trial on charges of money laundering, embezzlement and influence peddling. A former manager at Chinese engineering group CAMC, she is accused of using her ties to the president to land $560 million in government contracts for the company.
Who did she think she was, Hugo's daughter?
The case went kaboom! onto the political scene just as Bolivia prepared to hold a referendum on whether to change the constitution to allow Morales to run for a fourth term.

Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president, went on to lose the February 21 vote -- his first electoral defeat in a decade in power.

The president has said his son with Zapata would now be eight or nine years old, and that he would like to raise him if he were alive.

All Fourth Schedule suspects to be arrested
[DAWN] LAHORE: In the wake of the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park suicide kaboom, the government has decided to arrest all individuals included in the Fourth Schedule of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The decision was taken at a meeting on law and order presided over by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
here on Monday.

The prime minister expressed anger at Punjab’s security officials for ignoring an alert issued by an intelligence agency about presence in the province of four to five jacket wallahs looking for a soft target.

He also expressed dismay over the leniency shown towards miscreants in Islamabad and asked Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. A participant of the meeting told Dawn that the prime minister had ordered an immediate action against the history-sheeters included in the Fourth Schedule and said the action must not wait for a Rangers-police combined operation strategy and all law-enforcement agencies could act on their own to avert chances of criminals slipping away.

The Fourth Schedule comprises the elements found to be or suspected to be involved in anti-state activities, delivering hate speeches and/or activists of religious outfits not yet banned but related with militancy in any way.

At least 2,000 criminals are at present included in the list, the official said, adding that the action had been started across Punjab, particularly in Lahore, Faisalabad

home secretary when a joint director general of the Intelligence Bureau told him that the agency had issued a terror alert well in time.

Secretary Azam Sultan claimed in the meeting that his department had issued a circular containing the alert, but law-enforcement agencies overlooked it.

The meeting was told that the wife of a terrorist killed in an encounter months ago was now apparently operating the deadly network of a banned outfit. It was also informed that the suspected bomber, whose skull was found at the scene of the crime, had been working for a banned outfit and also recruited some youths for it.

The prime minister expressed displeasure over the entry of the miscreants into Islamabad’s Red Zone without any hindrance.

He was informed that organisers of the chehlum of Mumtaz Qadri had given an assurance that they would not cross a certain limit and that’s why Punjab police were ill-prepared to tackle the protesters.

[IsraelTimes] Intelligence source cited by Sky News says concrete threat to Istanbul synagogue and community center, after The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bandidos snuffies are planning an imminent attack on Jewish kindergartens, schools and youth centers in Turkey, according to a report by Britannia-based Sky News Monday.

The report came hours after Jerusalem issued an alert for all Israeli citizens to leave Turkey as soon as possible, citing an Islamic State threat, and nine days after three Israelis were killed in a bombing in Istanbul.

According to Sky News, citing an "intelligence source," bandidos snuffies are plotting to attack a synagogue which also doubles as a school and community center in the Beyoglu neighborhood of Istanbul.

The source said the threat was imminent and could happen at any moment.

"This is a more than credible threat. This is an active plot," the source said. "We don’t know when it’s scheduled for. It could be in the next 24 hours or next few days."

The report was likely referring to the Neve Shalom synagogue, Istanbul’s largest, serving many of the country’s estimated 17,000 Jews.

The synagogue has been the site of two previous deadly attacks: a 1986 shooting and a 2003 bombing.

The source said the intelligence was related to the capture of a group of Islamic State operatives, including a jacket wallah, in Gaziantep, in southern Turkey, last week, and added that security was being beefed up along with increased anti-terror measures.

On Saturday, Turkish police warned of possible Islamic State attacks against Christians and Jews over the weekend.

The police issued a nationwide alert warning of possible attacks targeting churches during Easter on Sunday, as well as synagogues, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported.

Israeli officials followed up that warning Monday by raising the terror risk in Turkey from level 3 (basic concrete threat) to level 2 (high concrete threat).

Africa Subsaharan
Would-be suicide bombers claim to be girls kidnapped by Boko Haram
[BDLIVE.CO.ZA] A PAIR of young female would-be jacket wallahs set off an international investigation over the weekend, when they were tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
at a roadblock in Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, one of them drugged and both insisting they were among the 276 schoolgirls kidnapped from the town of Chibok, Nigerian officials said.

Friday’s arrest offered further testimony to how deeply involved maidens of tender years have become in West Africa’s conflict with the Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
Islamist insurgency.

On Sunday, Femi Adesina, a front man for Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari said the government was dispatching two parents from Chibok to check whether the girls are their daughters. But there was also considerable doubt: A second front man for the president, Garba Shehu, said the girls may have been only 10 years old, too young to number among the missing high school-aged students.

Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of boys and girls from the northeast of Nigeria over years. The most high-profile incident occurred on April 14, 2014, when a group of Boko Haram fighters drove Toyota pickups through the gates of the Chibok Government Secondary School. Within hours, they drove off with 276 students, 57 of whom escaped in the days after.

The details of the kidnapping -- the girls had been studying for their final exams -- helped personalize the plight of the tens of thousands of mostly anonymous people who become victims in the Boko Haram conflict. A storm of tweets and protests across Nigeria and abroad helped inspire increased US involvement in the war, which has cost 28,000 Nigerian lives over the past five years.

Since then, the US has sent drones, manned surveillance planes, and about 300 troops to the border area of Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad, to help monitor Boko Haram -- and free its hostages, including the schoolgirls.

Early on, US planes spotted two large groups of women or girls -- roughly 40 in one location, and 70 in another. But the apparent hostages have since been moved and there was no proof they were the Chibok students.

In a statement, the protest group #BringBackOurGirls said it had no confirmation as to whether the girls arrested in Cameroon were, as they claimed, from Chibok. But the group offered guarded hope, saying the arrest represented the first recent lead to the girls’ locations.

EgyptAir hijacker arrested: Cyprus officials
[DAWN] A hijacker who seized an Egyptian airliner and forced it to land in Cyprus has been detained, Cypriot government front man Nicos Christodoulides said on Tuesday.
How in this day and age do you walk onto an aircraft wearing a boom belt?
According to the Telegraph, it was a fake boom belt, so he didn't. (Thanks, Crurong Elmeque1754!)
"The hijacker has just been enjugged
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
," Christodoulides said on Twitter, without providing further details.

An EgyptAir passenger plane flying from Cairo to Alexandria was hijacked on Tuesday and diverted to Cyprus, where it landed at Larnaca airport on the south coast, Cypriot police and Egyptian civil aviation authority officials said.

The suspected hijacker surrendered to authorities at Larnaca airport in Cyprus on Tuesday, Cypriot authorities said.

A man emerged from the aircraft and then walked across the tarmac with his hands up to two awaiting counter-terrorism coppers, an AFP correspondent reported.

They laid him on the ground and searched him for around two minutes before taking him away. "Its over," Cyprus's foreign ministry said in a tweet.l
Update from The Times of Israel at 9:45 a.m. ET:
LARNACA, Cyprus — The man accused of hijacking an EgyptAir plane with a fake explosives belt and forcing it to land in Cyprus was ordered to remain in police custody for eight days during his first court appearance on Wednesday.

Police told the court in Larnaca that 58-year-old Egyptian Seif al-Din Mohammed Mostafa faces possible charges of hijacking, kidnapping people with the aim of taking them to an unknown destination, reckless and threatening behavior and offenses that breach the anti-terror law.

Police prosecutor Andreas Lambrianou said that the suspect told police: "What’s someone supposed to do when he hasn’t seen his wife and children in 24 years and the Egyptian government won’t let him?"

India-Pakistan
Easter massacre
[DAWN] THERE are times when it is possible to be shocked and horrified without entirely being surprised. Sunday’s atrocity in Lahore falls into that category. The mass murder in a public park, evidently aimed primarily at Christians celebrating Easter, in the full knowledge that a large proportion of the victims would be children, epitomises the mindless brutality of forces unleashed almost four decades ago.

A comment in The Guardian on Monday lamenting the Gulshan-e-Iqbal suicide kaboom was titled ‘Religious snuffies will never succeed in taking over Pakistain’. It’s a well-intentioned piece, but it ignores the fact that Islamic fanatics did in fact take over Pakistain in 1977. Their triumph was never complete, but what was wrought under the aegis of Gen Zia ul Haq
...the creepy-looking former dictator of Pakistain. Zia was an Islamic nutball who imposed his nutballery on the rest of the country with the enthusiastic assistance of the nation's religious parties, which are populated by other nutballs. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976 by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, whom he hanged when he seized power. His time in office was a period of repression, with hundreds of thousands of political rivals, minorities, and journalists executed or tortured, including senior general officers convicted in coup-d'état plots, who would normally be above the law. As part of his alliance with the religious parties, his government helped run the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, providing safe havens, American equipiment, Saudi money, and Pak handlers to selected mujaheddin. Zia died along with several of his top generals and admirals and the then United States Ambassador to Pakistain Arnold Lewis Raphel when he was assassinated in a suspicious air crash near Bahawalpur in 1988...
has never completely been rolled back either.

Referring to Yadav, the chief minister said it is for the very first time that a senior Indian official was arrested in Balochistan. During interrogation, the RAW officer has revealed that he had been training armed Baloch groups for attacks on Pakistani ports. Prince Sultan bin Turki, who has elaborate 24-hour protection, brought legal action in Switzerland against the Saudi government over a kidnapping in 2003, which he says left him with serious, ongoing medical problems.

On 1 February he and his entourage boarded a Saudi plane in Paris ostensibly bound for Cairo, where he had made plans to visit friends and his father, the Saudi king’s elder brother, who lives there. His aide made reservations at the Kempinski Hotel in Cairo’s Garden City district. But he never arrived.

Scores of ISIS troops die in Aleppo battles
[ARA News] KOBANE ــ At least six Islamist rebels were killed on Tuesday during clashes with the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the vicinity of Azaz city in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, local sources reported.

The SDF forces include the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) along with Arab and Christian groups. Backed by the U.S.-led coalition, the SDF alliance is mainly focused on fighting ISIS, al-Qaeda and other Islamist groups in northern Syria.

“In a new violation of Syria’s fragile truce, Islamists tried to infiltrate into strongholds of the SDF near al-Qadi farm near Azaz northern Aleppo, but the latter was able to repel the attack,” said Rezan Hiddo, member of the Syrian Democratic Council.

“At least six Qaeda jihadis were killed in Tuesday’s clashes,” the source said, pointing out “the situation is now under control of the Kurdish-Arab alliance”.

During the clashes, a top leader from the al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front was killed, in addition to the destruction of two Nusra military vehicles, according to the SDF leadership.

Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, media activist Ali Jaafar said earlier that fierce clashes broke out between the SDF fighters and Nusra Front–supported by the Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham, the Usra Battalion and al-Sham Corps, during which heavy weapons were used.

“At least two Islamist rebels were killed and a dozen more wounded amid continued clashes between the two sides in Azaz suburbs,” Jaafar reported, pointing out “none of the parties reported any progress at the expense of the other despite the large military reinforcements received by Islamists”.

Subsequent to a remarkable advance by the Kurdish-Arab alliance in northern Aleppo, Islamist rebels prepared a massive attack on headquarters of the SDF forces in the province.

Last month, the YPG and SDF allies captured large parts of the Tel Rafaat town in the northern countryside of Aleppo, according to military sources.

This comes as the Turkish army continued shelling Kurdish YPG positions in northern Aleppo. Activists consider Turkey’s bombardment on the Kurdish headquarters as a direct support to Syrian Islamist groups, including Nusra Front–al-Qaeda wing in Syria.

Prayer leader arrested for raping student in Lakki Marwat seminary
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: A local prayer leader accused of raping a minor seminary student in Tajori area of Lakki Marwat district was tossed in the slammer
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
on Tuesday, police said.

The 38-year-old accused, who was a prayer leader at a local mosque, was arrested on charge of sexual abuse after one of his students lodged a First-Information Report (FIR) against him, Station House Officer (SHO) Ayaz Khan said.

The accused in initial interrogation confessed to sexually abusing one of his madressah students, an 11-year-old boy, he said.

The police officer said evidence has already been collected and medical tests are being processed. The accused will now be presented before a local court to seek his physical remand.

The incident took place at Darul Uloom Muhammadia Ghausia located in Kotka Abi Zar Ahmad Zai area of Lakki Marwat, the SHO said.

The madressah was founded 10 years ago and a number of students are receiving Islamic education there, he said.

The victim belonged to Dhoda area, which is around 40 kilometres away from the seminary, hence he resided there along with other students.

The boy claimed in the FIR that his room at the seminary was adjacent to that of the prayer leader, who asked the boy to bring him water for ablution (wuzu). The boy said as he entered the room, the prayer leader locked the door and subjected him to rape.

After the sexual assault, the holy man locked him inside the room for almost 24 hours, the boy alleged. The rape victim was able to escape and reach home when the prayer leader went away from the mosque.

Africa Horn
Shaboobs fund attacks by smuggling gold
Somalia-based Islamists terror group al-Shabaab has found another lucrative means for funding its terror activities. Research by the Institute for Security Studies shows the militant group is smuggling gold from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The findings suggest the gold is channelled from eastern DR Congo and is then smuggled through cities including Kampala, Bujumbura, Dar es Salaam and Nairobi. The gold is then thought to be exported to Dubai and the Far East.

With Al-Shabaab’s linked to larger terror organizations like Al-Qaeda, the group’s expansion into the DRC poses a significant threat. It’s also thought Al-Shabaab and the Ugandan Islamist group, Allied Democratic Forces, could have joined gold smuggling networks. The finance from this will help ensure Al-Shabaab remains resourced despite efforts by the African Union Mission in Somalia and the United Nations to cut off its funding.

The group is known to make its money from taxes on businesses and NGOs as well as contributions from the Somali diaspora and extortion. It’s also been linked to Somali pirate groups operating in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

Militants once had control of the vital port city of Kismayo, where they profited from millions of dollars worth of charcoal and khat exports to the Gulf States. In 2012 however, Kenyan forces flushed them out, dealing a major blow to their finances.

Recently, there have been suggestions that the terror group benefited from contraband sugar imports into Kenya.

Tony Joe White

If some of ya'll never been down south too much
I'm gonna tell you a little bit about this
So that you'll understand what I'm talkin' about
Down there we have a plant that grows out in the woods
And in the fields looks somethin' like a turnip green
And everybody calls it polk salad, polk salad
Used to know a girl lived down there
And she'd go out in the evenings and pick her a mess of it
Carry it home and cook it for supper
'Cause thats about all they had to eat, but they did all right
Down in Louisiana, where the alligators grow so mean
There lived a girl, that I swear to the world
Made the alligators look tame
Polk salad Annie, polk salad Annie
Everybody said it was a shame
Cause her momma was a workin' on the chain gang
(A mean vicious woman)

Revealed: The Soviet Union's Space Cannon
[NationalInterest] However, there was something different about Salyut 3/Almaz 2. It wasn't just a military space station. It was an armed military space station. Almaz 2 was equipped with a small cannon to test whether Soviet spacecraft could protect themselves from American anti-space weapons.

#4  A space cannon is a stupid idea. Not only will recoil screw with your orbit but if you hit you'll send shrapnel all over the place and it'll be a problem for decades. If you miss your projectile will circle around and likely come back to it's point of origin, your own station.

Perhaps the Soviets didn't know this back then but I suspect they did. If they put a canon up there I suspect it had more to do with firing down onto the Earth below. Small rocks could take out a building and would look like asteroid hits. A perfect weapon actually.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
7 charged with murder in killing of Ga. Lottery winner
[CBSNEWS] Authorities say seven people have beencharged in the shooting death of a recent Georgia Lottery winner.

Ben Hill County Sheriff Bobby McLemore tells WFXL-TV the seven suspects, who range in age from 17 to 28 years old, all face charges of malice murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Authorities say three masked men broke into 20-year-old Craigory Burch Jr.'s Fitzgerald home in January, demanded money and then fatally shot Burch.

The attack came two months after Burch won $434,272 from hitting the Fantasy 5 jackpot.
And he drew it out in cash and kept the money at home?
McLemore says he expects there to be more arrests in connection with the attack, which Sherlocks believe was targeted, and not random.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
13 injured as Palestinian police clash with gunmen in Nablus
[IsraelTimes] Firefight erupts between PA security forces and armed Fatah snuffies as cops attempt to arrest a murder suspect

Armed festivities broke out Tuesday between Paleostinian security forces and local youths in the West Bank city of Nablus, leaving seven youths and six security officials injured, the Ma’an news agency reported.

The firefight, which took place in Nablus’s old city, ensued after PA security forces attempted to arrest a local man accused of murder, Nablus’s governor, Akram Rujoub, told Ma’an.

A local man named Hani Halaweh, a leader in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, Fatah’s military wing, was identified as the murder suspect by Rujoub. Halaweh is believed to have been involved in the killing of a man named Ashraf al-Beia two months ago, the report said.

Halaweh spoke out against the PA immediately after the festivities.

"What happened today was a raid on houses of deaders, prisoners, and resistance fighters in the old city, which we will not allow," he said.

"We look to the Paleostinian Authority as a Paleostinian national project that must be protected and defended, but there are people in the PA who still chase resistance fighters when they should be chasing spies and drug pushers," he added.

Since October 2015, when the recent round of violence erupted between Paleostinians and Israelis, Paleostinians have often expressed dissatisfaction with their leadership.

A recent example of unrest was last month, when the PA used its security resources to violently quell a large-scale teachers’ strike throughout the West Bank.
