-Short Attention Span Theater-
The Fenian Brotherhood
[MIL.com] In the years following the American Civil War, Canada was still very much a possession of the British Empire. As such, it had a number of official fortifications and other important areas along its border with the United States.

One of those was Fort Erie, directly across the Niagara from the American city of Buffalo, New York. In June 1866, some 850 men crossed the Niagara from Buffalo, intent on capturing the fort.

They were Irishmen, and they were going to conquer Canada to free their home country.

Irish immigrants flowed into the United States in droves following the Acts of Union that saw British domination of Ireland since the early 1800s. The Great Irish Famine of the late 1840s also saw a huge emigration of Irish people to the United States.

By 1860, there were more than 1.6 million people of Irish descent who called themselves American ‐ and upwards of 175,000 of them were about to serve in the Union Army.

The Irish made-up 40 percent of foreign-born enlistments in the Civil War, and were 17 percent of the overall Union force. When these battle-hardened veterans returned home after the war, many of them were headed to New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New England. It was there that Irish National leaders were waiting to use the veterans' new talent for combat.

Investigation Reveals Jubilee's Parents May Have Bribed Her Way Into Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters
[Babylon Bee] SALEM CENTER, NY‐A federal investigation into a college admissions scandal has revealed that student Jubilation "Jubilee" Lee's parents may have paid up to $6 million to help her cheat her way into Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters.

Lee's parents paid off testing organizations and several teachers and faculty at the school in order to get her considered for enrollment, sources confirmed.

"We started to get suspicious when a student whose only accomplishment is the ability to shoot fireworks out of her hands was admitted to the school," one FBI agent said. "I mean, the school has students who can blast out ice and fire, control your mind, and move at incredible speeds. So when we saw Lee chewing gum and shooting off fireworks as though that's some kind of academic achievement, we knew something was up."

"It's like, fireworks---really? Come on."

Similar investigations have been opened up into how on earth Captain Marvel was inducted into the MCU and how Aquaman made it onto the Justice League.

China-Japan-Koreas
China's Slowdown Already Hit Its Factories. Now Its Offices Are Hurting, Too
[NYTimes] White-collar workers face job cuts and shrinking paychecks even in go-go industries like technology, suggesting the economic pain is broader than official figures show.

The job fair in the Chinese boomtown of Shenzhen offered a white-collar future for a country that rose to economic greatness on the strength of its assembly lines, bulldozers and cranes. Technology, financial and real estate companies pitched jobs in sales, engineering, accounting and logistics. A $150,000-a-year salary, said one poster, "isn’t just a dream."

But for many job seekers, it still seemed like one. At one end of the event hall, two dozen candidates sat dejectedly under a banner that read, "Hope you find a good job soon."

"Job hunting," said Hou Hao, a 28-year-old accountant who could not find a position that matched her previous $2,700-per-month salary, "now feels like being constantly slapped in the face."

China’s slowdown, which has idled factories and construction sites, is rippling through its offices. Educated, white-collar workers are being hit with job cuts and shrinking paychecks. Even big technology companies like JD.com, the online retailer, and Didi Chuxing, China’s answer to Uber and one of the world’s most valuable start-ups, have not been spared.

The white-collar job distress suggests the slowdown in China’s economy, the world’s second largest, is broader than official numbers indicate. China increasingly relies on middle-class spenders who are helping to broaden the economy beyond its industrial base. But these consumers are not spending the way they used to, and that lethargy is ricocheting through every part of the economy, from the real estate market to China’s once-thriving tech sector.

The slowdown also suggests the government will have a harder time pulling the economy out of its slump.

China's policy tools to kick-start growth ‐ unleashing waves of loans from the state-controlled banking system or building new highways and airports ‐ will not be much help for workers who process insurance claims or enter data into computer systems. Supporting those businesses and workers would require longer-term reforms, like getting state banks to lend more to private businesses or cutting red tape for entrepreneurs.

In the past, "by virtue of building a bridge, you could get the economy growing," said Fraser Howie, co-writer of three books on the Chinese financial system.

Now, he added, "there is no obvious catch up, and therefore it makes it all the more important that China makes important, difficult decisions to move forward."

Chinese leaders have acknowledged that creating jobs could be a challenge. During his annual news conference on Friday, Li Keqiang, China's premier, said that Beijing would make employment for college graduates and laid-off workers a priority this year.

China does not disclose reliable jobs or layoff data, so the full impact of the slowdown is not clear. Some surveys show there is still high demand for jobs in certain sectors. But multiple signs point to trouble for other office workers.

One measure, based on a survey of services businesses, suggests shrinking employment in a variety of industries. Search results from Baidu, China's biggest search engine, analyzed by Nomura, the Japanese bank, show the term "job seeking" rose to a high in December. Human resources executives and senior staff at tech firms, property developers and other large private companies described layoffs in recent months of up to 30 percent at some firms involving hundreds of workers, according to a recent survey by the research firm Global Source Partners.

On one major job recruitment website, Zhilian, the number of openings across all sectors posted in the fourth quarter fell 10 percent from the same period in 2017. New positions at technology firms and internet start-ups fell 51 percent in the third quarter of 2018 from a year earlier.

China's office workers have suffered during past slowdowns, but cuts now have a broader impact as the country's economy matures and they become a bigger part of the work force.

For workers like Sherry Xu, the weakened job market undermines the basic premise that a college education leads to a more secure future than a factory job. Ms. Xu, a 34-year-old finance professional, attended a prestigious university, and then rose through the ranks of the finance industry.

Recently, Ms. Xu was called into a meeting with human resources, right after she finished pitching to a group of potential investors. Her employer, a financial firm, was having a difficult time, she was told. Layoffs would start soon. She would be among them.

"The job market isn't looking good," said Ms. Xu, who after the meeting accepted a freelance contract with the same firm at half her earlier pay. "I feel this time, it will be harder than ever for me to find a job."
Keep the pressure on, Mr. Trump. The Soviet Union fell as it went bankrupt trying to keep up military spending with the West. Now we control a large part of our enemy's economy and we can crush them even faster.

Israel hits 100+ targets in Gaza in response to rockets
JERUSALEM (AP) ‐ Israeli warplanes on Friday struck some 100 Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in response to a rare rocket attack on the Israeli metropolis of Tel Aviv. Rocket fire persisted into the morning, setting the stage for additional possible reprisals.

The army said that its targets had included an office complex in Gaza City used to plan and command Hamas militant activities, an underground complex that served as Hamas' main rocket-manufacturing site, and a center used for Hamas drone development.
Islamic Jihad claimed credit for the rockets but the type of rocket is thought to be exclusively owned by Hamas.

Cory Booker grows a beard
[CNN via 10News] The 2020 Democratic field may have gained a contender Thursday with Beto O'Rourke -- but it officially lost an eligible bachelor in Cory Booker. Actress and activist Rosario Dawson confirmed Thursday rumors that the two are dating, telling TMZ that they are "very much" in a relationship.

Booker had previously confirmed that he was dating someone , telling "The Breakfast Club" radio show in February, "I got a boo" and that it was "somebody really special."

Bruce Ohr Transcripts Revealed Political Operatives Got The FBI To Investigate The NRA
[The Federalist] Friday’s release of a transcript of Bruce Ohr’s testimony before the House Judiciary Committee revealed several new tidbits. It also raised serious concerns that fake claims of collusion pushed by Glenn Simpson and Democratic opposition research shop Fusion GPS prompted the launch of not one, but two federal investigations: the Russia collusion investigation and investigations into the National Rifle Association (NRA).

During his day-long testimony last August, Ohr, then an associate deputy attorney general, explained his involvement‐or non-involvement, if he is to be believed‐in the Russia-collusion investigation. Ohr testified that he knew former MI6 spy and dossier author Christopher Steele for more than a decade and was acquainted with Steele’s boss, Fusion GPS head Simpson, for many years.

Ohr further explained that from July 30, 2016 until November 2017, both Steele and Simpson provided him "intel" related to supposed collusion between Russia and members of the Trump campaign. Ohr then passed this information on to the FBI, where it was used to, among other things, obtain FISA court orders to surveil and otherwise target the Trump campaign team.

But in an abbreviated aside, Ohr causally revealed one communique with Simpson that indicates the Fusion GPS founder pushed another false story that unleashed multiple federal investigations into the NRA.

During questioning, Ohr stated that Simpson mentioned "that Cleta Mitchell became aware of money moving through the NRA or something like that from Russia." Ohr added that Simpson claimed that Mitchell‐a D.C. attorney specializing in campaign-finance law and a former member of the NRA board of directors‐"was upset about it." But when asked how Simpson found out about Mitchell, Ohr testified, "I don’t think he said."

Amid crisis, Cuba plans revamp of state and legal system
HAVANA (AP) ‐ In the midst of a regional crisis over Venezuela and tough economic straits, the Cuban government is about to launch a sweeping makeover of its centrally planned, single-party system with dozens of new laws that could reshape everything from criminal justice to the market economy.

Nearly a year of debate and discussion ended last month with the approval of Cuba’s first constitutional reform since 1976. Some observers see the new constitution as a merely cosmetic update aimed at assuring one of the world’s last communist systems won’t get another revamp until long after the passing of its founding fathers, now in their late 80s and early 90s. Others see the potential for a slow-moving but deep set of changes that will speed the modernization of Cuba’s economically stagnant authoritarian bureaucracy.

Cuban legal experts told The Associated Press that they expect the government to send the National Assembly between 60 and 80 new laws over the next two years to replace ones rendered obsolete by the new constitution. The assembly is virtually certain to unanimously approve all government proposals, as it has for decades.

"I expect to see big changes in Cuba with the new constitution," said Julio Antonio Fernandez, a constitutional law professor at the University of Havana. "A new state structure, a transformed political system, led by the Communist Party, of course, but different and confronting big challenges."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
50 Iranian Drones Conduct Massive 'Way To Jerusalem' Excercise
[Jerusalem Post] The point of the drill is to showcase Iran’s military prowess. It comes in the wake of a large naval drill in February and frequent new tests of ballistic missiles.

Iran’s Defense Ministry announced on Thursday that it had launched a massive exercise involving 50 drones that are based on a US Sentinel drone the Iranians captured in 2011. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it was the strongest exercise of its kind to date.

Named "Beit al-Maqdis," a reference to Jerusalem, the operation was attended by the commander of the IRGC, Hossein Salami, and IRGC Aerospace Force commander Amir Ali Hajizadeh. Fars News and Tasnim News both reported details of the operation, noting that, "for the first time, 50 Iranian drones on the RQ-170 [US Sentinel] model operated with a number of assault and combat drones."

It was the first time, Iran says, that so many drones operated simultaneously in an "offensive operation" at distances of more than 1,000 km away from each other. They trained to strike predetermined targets with "high precision." IRGC Ground Force commander Maj.-Gen. Golam Ali Rashid boasted that while the US has said Iran is failing 40 years after the Islamic Revolution, in fact "today we are witnessing the strongest maneuvers of the IRGC’s Aerospace Forces." Enemies would be "humiliated and feel shame," according to the statement.

Salami said he appreciated the power of the IRGC’s air arm and that it shows that despite US sanctions, Iran is achieving success. Tehran says that it has created an indigenous and advanced copy of the Sentinel. Iran has showcased two versions of these copies since 2016, but video from the "Jerusalem" operation on Thursday showed them being lashed to trucks for the exercise. It wasn’t clear why a drone needs to be launched from a pick-up truck, if it is an "advanced" drone. Claiming that the IRGC is at the forefront of modern UAVs seemed to be in contrast to the photos from the operation, photos that the IRGC itself had released. However, Hajizadeh also pointed to drones that look like the US Predator MQ-1 as evidence that Iran has achieved results. The Shahed 129, first flown in 2012, is Iran’s copy of the Predator.

Newly released documents spark Graham's call for special counsel to probe FBI handling of Clinton
[Washington Times] Sen. Lindsey Graham called Thursday for Congress to create a special counsel to probe the FBI and Justice Department, saying evidence is mounting that they treated Hillary Clinton more leniently than they did President Trump during the 2016 election campaign.
This foto is several years old by now. I bet she's still a looker.
Mr. Graham made the call as newly released documents show the extent of anti-Trump sentiment among FBI employees who were instrumental in handling the investigation into Mrs. Clinton’s secret email server and in launching the Russia investigation that turned into Robert Mueller’s special counsel probe.

The documents released this week ‐ transcripts of interviews from fired FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page ‐ show they were determined to prevent Mr. Trump from becoming president and had impeachment on their minds once he did take office.

Mr. Graham took to the Senate floor to say Mr. Mueller has had his chance to deal with Mr. Trump and now it’s time to turn the microscope the other way. He said he will introduce legislation to create another special counsel for that purpose.

"There’s more than smoking guns here. There’s overwhelming evidence that somebody outside the political system should look into," the South Carolina Republican said.

Pentagon Acting SECDEF Shanahan misses deadline to produce list of project cuts to fund border wall construction
[Washington Times] Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan missed a Thursday deadline to turn over a list of military construction projects that could be delayed in order to build President Trump’s border wall.

Mr. Shanahan, in a hearing earlier in the day, had promised Sen. Jack Reed he would produce the list "by the end of today."

At about 11:30 p.m. Mr. Reed announced that Mr. Shanahan said he would no longer meet the deadline.

"Tonight, the Acting Secretary of Defense informed me he is unable to keep his commitment to share the list of what will be cut to pay for the vanity wall," Mr. Reed said. "This unacceptable series of evasions should trouble members of Congress, regardless of political party."

No explanation was given, but the mere possibility of such a list is politically charged.

US drops 'Israeli-occupied' designation from Golan Heights
[The Palestinian Chronical] According to Hebrew-language news outlets, the US dropped from its annual report on the human rights situation any reference to the Palestinian territories or the Syrian Golan Heights as "occupied territories" as it used to be mentioned in former reports.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, a spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said in a statement that the US decision to drop the status of occupation from the Palestinian territories and the Syrian Golan Heights is "a continuation of the hostile approach of the American administration toward our Palestinian people and is contrary to all UN resolutions."

It is noteworthy that the Palestinian Authority (PA) has been boycotting the US administration since December 2017 when US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and then moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May 2018.

Australia Aboriginals win right to sue for colonial land loss
[Aljazeera] Sydney, Australia - The High Court has handed down the biggest "native title" ruling affecting Aboriginal ownership of the land in decades, amid claims that billions of dollars in compensation will need to be paid by governments to indigenous groups.

"Native title" refers to the rights of Australia's indigenous people to their traditional land and water recognised by Australian common law.

Lawyers, including those representing mining companies, said the ruling in favour of the Ngaliwurru and Nungali Aboriginal groups - from a remote part of the Northern Territory - paved the way for billions of dollars in compensation nationally.

"The High Court's decision will likely to trigger compensation applications from many of the hundreds of native title holder groups around Australia," said Tony Denholder, in the wake of a case that a federal court ruled on in 2016 - before the High Court became involved.

The Native Title Act came about after the landmark "Mabo" decision in 1993 overturned the British claim that Australia was "terra nullius" - nobody's land. It found that Aboriginal rights to some, but by no means all land, survived colonisation and were not "extinguished".

Since then, Aboriginal groups have been able to file native title claims over large parts of the country.

Ethiopian 737 Max 8 Mystery – What About The Explosion?
[Red State] In a war or disaster, the first reports are often wrong or conflicting.

In the case of the Ethiopian Airlines crash of the 737 Max 8, there are two very different reports. The first is that the loss of control that crashed the plane and killed all onboard was related to the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System ("MCAS") system that tragically appears to have caused the Lion Air crash last year. Indeed, early analysis indicates a similar pattern to the Lion crash indicating a struggle between the aircraft and crew.

Yet the other report is the statements of several witnesses on the ground, as reported by Reuters, who reported loud noises, smoke streaming from the aircraft, as well as clothing and papers escaping from the plane before it crashed.
From the Reuters story: "Half a dozen witnesses interviewed by Reuters in the farmland where the plane came down reported smoke billowing out behind, while four of them also described a loud sound. "It was a loud rattling sound. Like straining and shaking metal," said Turn Buzuna, a 26-year-old housewife and farmer who lives about 300 meters (328 yards) from the crash site.

"Everyone says they have never heard that kind of sound from a plane and they are under a flight path," she added. Malka Galato, 47, a barley and wheat farmer whose field the plane crashed in, also described smoke and sparks from the back. "The plane was very close to the ground and it made a turn... Cows that were grazing in the fields ran in panic," he said.

Tamirat Abera, 25, was walking past the field at the time. He said the plane turned sharply, trailing white smoke and items like clothes and papers, then crashed about 300 meters away."
These two reports are entirely inconsistent.

In the event of a MCAS or other-caused loss of control of the aircraft by the pilots, the plane would make no explosive-like sounds, nor would there be smoke and debris escaping from the aircraft. Ground witnesses would have observed an intact airplane dive steeply into the ground without explosive-like sounds.
The statements of the ground witnesses appear consistent with a bomb or other explosion that opened the fuselage. A fire that caused an explosion or a bomb could plausibly damage data cabling, instrumentation and other electronics, making the cockpit controls inoperative or partially compromised‐perhaps approximating the symptoms of a MCAS-like failure or even triggering a MCAS failure-event by damaging a crucial sensor.

The probability of both MCAS and explosive events happening simultaneously seems slim, however if the statements by the ground witnesses hold up to forensics investigations, and if as initial analysis shows, there was a MCAS-related loss of control, then this coincidence must not be ruled out.

#1  If an engine blew, the rattling would be metal grinding in the turbines, which rkcket tbe metal into the fuselage and suitcases resulting in clothing scattering. White smoke is the automatic fire suppression system coating the exploded engine.

Engines are under greatest stress lifting the airliner from the ground to 30,000 feet.

#2  The MCAS will not cause an explosion. However, an explosion can cause flight control failure. If something exploded, as the witnesses saw, tail control would most likely be an issue and that means loss of Pitch control. This could make them think its an MCAS failure, but in reality its not. This is going to get interesting.

Hmm, interesting. Playing Devil's Advocate, that model is in wide use which could mean chance selection and terrorists generally like publicity as much as destruction.

Chance selection? Not so fast; Flightaware as well as other flight tracking apps will display the equipment used on a particular flight; current as well as historical. So you could stack the deck if your targeted plane of choice were known on the desired routes.

Interesting, USN, Ret. Insider stuff like this is just another reason why I love the 'Burg.

As a connoisseur of How Stuff Breaks, I've noticed that catastrophic failures are usually due to a cascade of events rather than a single failure. As I understand, the MCAS was grafted on to the control system after some changes to the wing design made the plane squirrelly. We've seen a number of crashes where the autopilot is doing something inappropriate, usually in response to bad sensor data and the pilot is unable to regain control, whether from forgetting to turn off the automation, lack of experience, or just running out of speed/altitude.

Suspect in Kavanaugh Confirmation Doxxing Has Feinstein Ties. DoJ May Not Release Details
[Daily Caller] A former Senate aide charged with doxxing Republican senators and extorting a witness comes from an elite family with ties to Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee.

Prosecutors signaled Tuesday that they might give the aide, Jackson Cosko, a plea deal that would prevent the facts of the case from ever being learned publicly.

During Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s September 2018 confirmation hearing, Cosko ‐ a former IT aide who once managed Democratic New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan’s office computer accounts ‐ allegedly posted to Wikipedia the home addresses of Republican senators who supported the Supreme Court justice.

"I own EVERYTHING," Cosko told a Hassan aide who caught him in the act, according to prosecutors. "If you tell anyone I will leak it all. Emails signal conversations gmails."

Information revealed in court since then suggested that might not have been a bluff. U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan on Jan. 24 said Cosko allegedly possessed terabytes of information, including Senate data so sensitive that it could not be discussed in open court.

"He downloaded more information than was originally understood. There is no combination of conditions that could ensure the safety of the community," Hogan said in December 2018.

Prosecutors underscored that he was a flight risk and that they had concerns he would engage in obstruction of justice.

Former Michelle Obama's former aide pushing for FBI - Deep State lead in Smollett case
[MSN.com] CHICAGO ‐ After being contacted by a former senior Obama administration official, the Chicago-area's top prosecutor last month requested that the city police turn over their investigation of an alleged attack on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett to the FBI, according to texts and emails released by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.

Tina Tchen, who worked as former first lady Michelle Obama’s chief of staff during her time in the White House, first contacted Kim Foxx by text on Feb. 1 and said the actor's family had "concerns" about the investigation, according to the communications. Tchen, a Chicago-based attorney, is also the co-founder of the Times Up Legal Defense Fund.

At the time of the correspondence, Smollett was still considered by police to be the victim of an assault. The actor was later charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false report for allegedly staging an attack to make him look like the victim of a brutal hate crime.

"Spoke to the Superintendent Johnson," Foxx emailed Tchen on Feb. 1, referring to the city’s top cop, Eddie Johnson. "I convinced him to Reach out to FBI to ask that they take over the investigation."

Foxx also texted with one of Smollett’s relatives, whose name was redacted in copies of the communication released by her office.

"Spoke to the superintendent earlier, he made the ask," Foxx wrote. "Trying to figure out logistics. I’ll keep you posted."

The relative responded, "Omg this would be a huge victory."

Over 40 killed as gunmen open fire in two mosques in New Zealand
[ABC] CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand ‐ At least 40 people have been killed after gunmen opened fire in two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch Friday, a coordinated and unprecedented attack that has shocked the usually peaceful nation.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said four people have been taken into custody ‐ three men and one woman ‐ though police cannot assume that there are not other suspects at large.

The shootings occurred at the al Noor mosque on Deans Avenue and Linwood Masjid in Linwood, both in Christchurch’s city center.

"We are unsure if there are any other locations outside of that area that are under threat," Bush said, adding that the two locations were on lockdown.

Multiple improvised explosive devices were attached to vehicles as part of the attack, Bush told reporters. These had been "made safe by the defense force."

"This goes to the seriousness of the situation," he said.

Police were still treating the incident as ongoing into Friday evening local time and urged Christchurch residents to stay indoors and monitor the police website and social media.

The situation was also considered as to limited to Christchurch and Bush asked "anyone who was thinking of going to a mosque anywhere in New Zealand today not to go. To close your doors until you hear from us again," he said.

All mosques nationwide have been asked to shut their doors.

In a press conference, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the attack as "one of New Zealand’s darkest days."

Somali Woman Charged With Terrorizing North Dakota Neighborhood Previously Tied to Human Sex Trafficking Case
[PJMedia] A woman recently charged with making terrorist threats in a small North Dakota town claims she is innocent and being targeted because of her race and religion. But a local news station reports that not only has she been repeatedly charged with crimes in multiple states, she was previously tossed in the slammer
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
for her connection to a nationwide case of human sex trafficking.

Hawo Osman Ahmed, 26, is charged with a Class C felony of Terrorizing stemming from an incident last November 29 when she confronted three women from her Grand Forks apartment complex with a knife. According to a Grand Forks Police Department affidavit filed in the case, Ahmed said to the women "I'm going to bust all your tires on your car and windows," "Come over here I'm going to cut you," and "I'm going to slice your neck," all while holding the weapon.

In an interview last Thursday with Valley News Live, Ahmed claimed she is being targeted because of her race and religion.

"I feel like I'm a Moslem woman who's being attacked because I am a Moslem woman living in Grand Forks," she told news hound Joshua Peguero. "I turned myself in because I know I didn't commit the crime. I'm innocent and I know I can prove it."

But Peguero discovered through court records that Ahmed has been charged in a string of incidents in Iowa, North Dakota, and Minnesota, including third degree assault and giving a false name to a police officer. On September 11 of last year, Ahmed was charged with a Class A misdemeanor for violating a disorderly conduct restraining order.

Ahmed was also charged as part of a massive 2010 federal case of human sex trafficking involving three connected Somali gangs -- the Somali Outlaws, the Somali Mafia, and the Lady Outlaws -- who ran a prostitution ring in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Ohio. Twenty-nine individuals were charged in the original federal case. According to the FBI, the prostitution ring trafficked girls as young as 13 from Minnesota to Nashville and Columbus.

As the case was progressing, a pregnant Ahmed and two of her friends confronted a key witness in the human sex trafficking case at a shopping mall. Ahmed and the federal witness got into a fight, and the trio were later arrested and charged with witness tampering. Ahmed and her friends were acquitted in July 2013 after a police officer was found to have made false and misleading statements. None of the other subjects charged in the federal sex trafficking case were convicted due to the local police officer's misconduct.

Ahmed current has a federal lawsuit pending against the police officer.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Ahmed attended the University of North Dakota and studied nutrition. She has worked for Development Homes in Grand Forks, an organization that assists individuals with physical and developmental disabilities.

A June 2016 local news article reported that Ahmed was chosen to receive a Habitat for Humanity home, but she apparently is still living in the apartment complex where the altercation and alleged threats occurred last November.

Her victims claimed that she was known for climbing onto apartment balconies and breaking into other apartments. She denied those claims in her interview last Thursday.

The Class C felony she is currently charged with carries up to a five-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

Cautious Calm in Ain el-Hilweh after Armed Groups Trade Fire
[AnNahar] Cautious calm was on Thursday afternoon engulfing the Paleostinian refugee camp of Ein el-Hellhole after an exchange of gunfire between two gangs, the National News Agency said.

NNA said Youssef Orqoub, the son of notorious runaway Bilal Orqoub, was seriously maimed in the clash.

It added that two other people were maimed, one of them Kamal al-Dawoudi, a bodyguard of the head of the Mujahid Islamic Movement Sheikh Jamal Khattab.

Al-Jadeed television meanwhile reported that "intensive contacts" were underway to contain the situation.

Earlier in the day, NNA said a group led by B.A. shot it out with members of the Islamist Usbat al-Ansar group after the Paleostinian Kh.Kh., who is loyal to Usbat al-Ansar, shot up Y.A., a son of the leader of the first group, wounding him in the stomach.

Thursday's incidents are linked to the clash that erupted two days ago according to NNA.

Two Paleostinian civilians were maimed in that incident.

Stanford students first to sue colleges named in admissions scandal
[NYPOST] Four college students plus parents of three of them have filed a class-action suit against the colleges wrapped up in a nationwide admissions scandal ‐ plus the scheme’s criminal mastermind ‐ claiming that the plot denied them a fair shot at entry to elite institutions.

The students claim that their applications were undercut by William "Rick" Singer’s plot to fraudulently get undeserving kids into top schools in exchange for bribes from their well-heeled parents.

The suit was originally filed Wednesday in the US District Court for Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,’s Northern District by two students at Stanford ‐ which is among the eight schools named as a defendant, along with Singer, his college-counseling business, the bogus charity he used to launder money and seven other schools to which he directed kids.

But the suit was amended and re-filed Thursday, with one of the Stanford students dropping out, but replaced by three other students from schools across the country.

Despite the students’ top-notch grades and extracurriculars, their applications to such prestigious institutions as Yale and Georgetown were rejected ‐ a fate the suit claims they might have avoided on a level playing field without Singer putting his thumb on the scale.

All told, 50 people ‐ including parents, college sports coaches and proctors ‐ were charged Tuesday in the sweeping federal probe.

Among the well-off parents caught up in the bombshell case are TV actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin.

Singer pleaded guilty to charges including racketeering conspiracy Tuesday in Massachusetts federal court.

Witness: Many dead in New Zealand mosque shooting
[IsraelTimes] A witness says many people have been killed in a mass shooting at a mosque in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

Police have not described the scale of the Friday shooting but urged people in central Christchurch to stay indoors.

Witness Len Peneha says he saw a man dressed in black enter the Masjid Al Noor mosque and then heard dozens of shots, followed by people running from the mosque in terror.

He says he also saw the gunman flee before emergency services arrived

Peneha says he went into the mosque to try and help: "I saw dead people everywhere."

20 BIFF militants killed in Maguindanao clashes
[Rappler] At least two foreign fighters are believed to be among the 20 Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters killed in military operations that began on Monday, March 11.

Philippine military spokesman Cirilito Sobejana said “more or less 20” were killed “including one foreign terrorist." He said the body of an Arab-looking fighter was seen among the dead.

Sobejana said Singaporean militant Muhamad Ali Abdul Rahiman, known as Mauwiyah, was also in the area along with BIFF subleader Salahudin Hassan during the air strikes. They are believed to be among those killed. He said they're still retrieving the body parts so the fatalities may be identified.

The 6th ID launched on Monday, March 11, air strikes and ground operations against BIFF fighters in the so-called “SPMS box” – the towns of Shariff Aguak, Pagatin, Mamasapano, and Salibo where the different BIFF factions operate. Up to 1,360 families or more than 5,000 residents were displaced in the military operations that was supposedly coordinated with local government units and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Captain Arvin Encinas, 6th ID spokesman, said the deaths resulting from the operations significantly reduced the number of BIFF combatants. He said they have names of at least 17 of the fighters killed in the operations, based also on information from the community. He said residents believe Mauwiyah was among those killed although only two bodies were recovered. Mauwiyah is a senior Jema'ah Islamiyah member reportedly associated with Moro militants.

The military estimates that over 200 fighters compose the three different factions of the breakaway group of the MILF, which now heads the new Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Rattled in Algiers
[DAWN] IT is rare, but not unknown, for deceased candidates to be elected to public office. It is somewhat less uncommon for moribund time-servers to be reinstalled in, or elevated to, positions of power in what are clearly their last years.

Perhaps the most farcical instance of this phenomenon was witnessed in the Soviet Union in the first half of the 1980s, when Leonid Brezhnev, barely alive in the final phase of his leadership, was succeeded by an ailing Yuri Andropov, who lasted about 15 months, whereupon Konstantin Chernenko was virtually dragged out of his deathbed and propped up in the red chair.

A related phenomenon is leaders who consider themselves irreplaceable. Vladimir Putin

last month to let him know that his phone had been hacked by programmers in Iran, Channel 12 news reports.

The hackers got a hold of Gantz’s personal details and professional texts and the Shin Bet agents told him that any sensitive information could be used against him in the weeks leading up to the election.

The agents told Gantz to proceed as he sees fit, suggesting that no classified information had been on the device in the first place.

In light of the Channel 12 report, Gantz canceled a campaign appearance scheduled for this evening.

Blue and White declined to comment on the details of the report, only saying that its timing, weeks before the election, raises questions.

Former ICE Chief: Senate Vote a ‘Morale-Killer' for Border Patrol and ICE
[Epoch Times] WASHINGTON‐Tom Homan, former head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) hit out at the 12 Republican senators who voted to terminate President Donald Trump’s national border emergency on March 14.

"It’s a morale-killer for the Border Patrol and for ICE," Homan told The Epoch Times. "I don’t think these 12 senators understand how important border security is to this country. They say they support border security, but their talk is talk, they need to walk the walk."

He challenged the 12 senators to "wear the uniform and stand on that border for a week, then come back and say a wall’s not needed."

The 12 Republicans that joined all 47 Democrats to pass the measure are Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Sen. Susan Collins (R-Me.), Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), Sen. FATF’s conflict of interest
[DAWN] FINANCE minister Asad Umar has done the right thing by writing to the Financial Action Task Force and asking for one of the co-chairs of the International Cooperation Review Group ‐ an individual who is a serving officer of the Indian government ‐ to be replaced.

Given the co-chair’s position, the question arises of a conflict of interest when it comes to dealings with Pakistain.

The ICRG is tasked with reviewing Pakistain’s progress on its implementation plan to move out of the grey list, and its report will play a crucial role in the June meetings of the global financial watchdog when Pakistain’s listing comes up for a decision.

Pakistain narrowly avoided being blacklisted in the February meetings of the global watchdog that monitors terror financing and money laundering. The meetings took place against the backdrop of the Pulwama attack and the subsequent rise in Pakistain-India tensions.

Departing from script, India made a spirited case for the immediate blacklisting of Pakistain at that meeting and found some backers around the table. Deft outreach efforts made by Pakistain’s delegation in Gay Paree and senior government officials back in Islamabad saved the day.

But since then, India has continued with its campaign and used diplomatic channels to reach out to member countries of FATF, urging them to support a move to blacklist Pakistain in the June meetings. And all this even before the implementation of the action plan had begun.

Since the Indian government is pushing this agenda through diplomatic channels, it is hard to imagine how the co-chair of the ICRG, who in this case holds a controversial position, will follow a line other than the one adopted by his government.

Hezbollah's new terror project mastermind: 'Worst of the worst'
[Jpost] Ali Mussa Daqduq, Nasrallah's former bodyguard, is said by the IDF to be the mastermind behind Hezbollah's Golan Project.

Six years after senior Hezbollah operative Ali Mussa Daqduq was released from an Iraqi prison for the murder of five American servicemen, he has resurfaced mere miles from Israel’s border on the Syrian Golan Heights as the criminal mastermind of a new and dangerous Hezbollah terror network.

According to the IDF, Daqduq is the leader of Hezbollah’s clandestine "Golan Project" ‐ a terrorist network which the IDF believes is aiming to build up its capabilities to one day launch serious attacks against Israel such as rocket and infiltrations into communities on the Israel Golan Heights.

Afghanistan
Afghan airstrikes kill 31 militants
[DAWN] Thirty-one holy warriors, many of them believed to have been Al Qaeda gunnies, have been killed in Arclight airstrikes in south-eastern Afghanistan, officials said on Thursday.

The strikes were carried out in Ghazni province late Wednesday, where the defence ministry said they targeted a "base" belonging to the holy warriors.

"Qari Aref, one of the controllers (for Al Qaeda) was transferring these 31 terrorists, including nine jacket wallahs, in several cars when targeted by airstrikes and eliminated," the ministry said.

It described the fighters as all belonging to the Middle Eastern holy warrior group, although a front man for the Ghazni governor said fighters from the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
-affiliated Haqqani network were also present.

The defence ministry did not specify who carried out the airstrikes. Only Afghan and US forces in Afghanistan conduct airstrikes.

The Ghazni governor's front man, Mohammed Aref Noori, said the strikes had been carried out by US forces, but there was no immediate confirmation of his claim.

group, his brother said on Thursday.

Al-Sareji, who was born in 1965 in Haret Saida, had been kidnapped by the Islamist group around a week ago.

Mohammed al-Sareji, the man's brother, told the National News Agency that "machetes" were used in the murder and that he has communicated with the Lebanese consulate in Nigeria to unveil the incident's circumstances.

Tuesday's attack had left another person dead when four button men stormed a road construction site in the city of Kano.

"There was a kidnapping incident at Dangi Roundabout this morning and the victim is a Lebanese engineer," Kano state police front man Abdullahi Haruna told AFP on Tuesday.

"One person was killed and another injured in the attack," said Haruna. The victim was at the site without any assigned security, he added.

Witnesses said a Nigerian construction worker was killed and another injured, after they tried to prevent the button men from entering the site.

Kidnapping for ransom is widespread in the oil-rich southern delta region of Nigeria, where criminal gangs seize expatriate oil workers and wealthy Nigerians in exchange for hefty payments.

The gangs often roam on cycle of violences and are known to operate in northern Kaduna and neighboring Zamfara states.

Abductees are often released within days if the ransom is paid but residents say they can be killed if no money is forthcoming.

More evacuations from ISIS-held Baghouz after night of intense clashes
[Rudaw] After a night of intense festivities between Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
snuffies in Baghouz, hundreds of ISIS fighters and their families exited their camp and surrendered on Thursday.

ISIS is cornered in a tent camp on the banks of the Euphrates River near Baghouz, in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province. The SDF have broken into the camp on the western side, but progress is limited because of the presence of civilians.

"We are slowly going forward. If it hadn’t been for their families, our campaign would have been done long ago. There isn’t much left of the campaign," an SDF fighter told Rudaw.

The snuffies in Baghouz have two choices, Mustafa Bali, SDF spokesperson, told media: they either surrender unconditionally or get killed.

The SDF mostly progress at night because that is when civilians are hiding but jihadists are on the move, the SDF fighter explained to Rudaw.

"We are slowly going forward in the night so that our comrades don’t get martyred or injured and so that nothing happens to the women and kiddies," he said.

Veiled women and their young, wailing children struggled over the rough terrain, laden down with their possessions as they straggled into SDF-controlled territory. Haggard men, some injured, shuffled along and the occasional crack of gunfire or the bang of an kaboom could be heard.

"Our forces are advancing continuously on a number of fronts... the pace is very slow because of the civilians still trapped inside areas under the control of the ISIS mercenaries," a female SDF fighter told Rudaw, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

The SDF is keeping open a corridor for families to evacuate and snuffies to surrender. On Thursday, 1,300 people ‐ families and fighters ‐ turned themselves in, Bali tweeted. More than 60,000 people have evacuated the Baghouz area since December, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Not all are giving up on their so-called caliphate that once covered swathes of Syria and Iraq.

In the past 24 hours, ISIS attempted more than 20 suicide kabooms, according to the SDF.

"Despite the ferocity of the battles and festivities on all fronts and axes, none of our fighters got hurt or damaged," the force stated, adding they have killed or injured 112 ISIS bully boys.

The Observatory has documented 11 SDF fighters killed.
Al Ahram adds:
U.S.-backed fighters besieging Islamic State's final shred of territory in eastern Syria said they had pushed further into the enclave following clashes and air strikes by the U.S.-led coalition.

"Our fighters advanced deep into areas controlled by the terrorist organisation and established a number of new points, following clashes in which terrorists sustained a number of deaths and injuries," a statement from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) press office said.

It said 15 members of Islamic State had been killed after they tried to attack SDF troops.
An Nahar adds:
Their last Syrian bastion is levelled and burned, they are using rifles to battle warplanes and tanks, but the hardline jihadists holding out in Baghouz are still putting up a fight.

IS fighters are now cornered on a palm-lined bend of the Euphrates near Syria's border with Iraq, but they are still on the offensive.

"They attacked on two axes, from the Euphrates river, and from the hill," an SDF commander who gave his name as Sheikh Al-Jabal says from the roof of a nearby villa used as a military position.

He points to the banks of the river behind the IS encampment, about a kilometre (half a mile) away, but the view is obscured by the thick black smoke billowing out of the ruins of Baghouz.

A wasteland strewn with the charred carcasses of vans, cars and water tankers lies beyond the SDF's positions, marking the edge of the handful of acres ruled by IS.

Gazan arrested after infiltrating into Israel with improvised explosive device
[IsraelTimes] Another Paleostinian armed with a knife detained earlier after crossing border fence, amid heightened tension with coastal enclave.

A Paleostinian was jugged
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
Thursday after infiltrating into Israel from the Gazoo Strip with an improvised bomb on his person, the Israel Defense Forces said.

A similar incident occurred hours earlier, when the military said another Gazook crossed the border fence armed with a knife and was apprehended by soldiers who spotted him near the border fence.

In both cases, troops conducted a search and discovered the weapons, after which both suspects were taken for questioning, the army said.

The border breaches came amid a period of heightened tensions in the region of the coastal enclave.

Last Friday, two Paleostinians, carrying a knife and a hand grenade, infiltrated into Israel from northern Gazoo, prompting a large-scale call-up of security personnel in the area before they were eventually arrested.

Paleostinians have been holding weekly border riots as part of what they call the "March of Return" since March 30, 2018.

Paleostinians say these protests are typically peaceful in nature and call for their right to return to their family homes in Israel and the West Bank (much of Gazoo’s population is made up of refugees from the 1948 War of Independence and their descendants) and for an end to the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the enclave, which the two countries say is necessary to prevent terror groups from easily importing weapons and materiel.

Israel maintains that the demonstrations are orchestrated by Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,, which vocally supports them, sends free buses to the border and provides food and internet to participants ‐ as well as money for those injured in them ‐ in order to provide a cover for the organization’s nefarious activities along the security fence, including infiltration attempts, the planting of explosives and attacks on Israeli soldiers.

Palestinian militants in Gaza fire two rockets at Tel Aviv area, IDF retaliates
[Ynet] Iron Dome activated but fails to intercept; strikes come amid Egyptian attempts to mediate lull in violence between Israel and Hamas, the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,; Netanyahu calls emergency security meeting; all Paleostinian factions so far denied responsibility for the rocket fire

Israeli military confirms two rockets were fired at Tel Aviv area, as rocket alert sirens rocked the entire Dan region in central Israel on Thursday evening. Despite the apparent activation of the Iron Dome air defence system, the military said no rockets were shot down. It said there were no reports of casualties or damage.

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai said he had ordered the city to open public air raid shelters as a protective measure. The decision was followed by several other municipalities in the central Israel.

terror group‐initially thought to be behind the attack‐denied any involvement in the rocket fire.

The Hamas armed wing said in a statement it was also "not responsible" for the firing of the rockets "towards the enemy. They were fired as a meeting was underway between the leadership of the Hamas movement and the Egyptian security delegation over the understandings regarding the Gazoo Strip."

The attacks came as Gazoo rulers Hamas sought to contain riots by Paleostinians in the coastal enclave and security experts in Israel speculated that the domestic disturbances could lead the terror group to strike Israel as a diversion.

"No rocket fell in any built-up area," military front man Brigadier-General Ronen Manelis told Israel Radio, declining to provide further operational details. "This was basically a surprise," Manelis said, adding that Israel had no advance intelligence warnings of the rocket fire.

"We don't know who carried it out (but) the Hamas organization is the main organization in the Strip. It is responsible for what happens within the Strip and what emanates from it."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency security meeting in the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv following the event. Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon said on Twitter that Israel "would respond as necessary" to the rocket attack. Other Israeli politicians from across the spectrum called for a response to the rocket fire.

Following the rocket fire, Hamas evacuated all its headquarters in the Gazoo Strip in anticipation of a possible retaliation by Israeli military. A delegation of senior Egyptian intelligence officials, currently in Gazoo, is also expected to leave in the upcoming hours.

IDF Strikes Gaza In Retaliation To Rocket Launch At Tel Aviv

[Jpost] The IDF began striking targets in Gazoo on Thursday night in retaliation to two rockets fired at Tel Aviv earlier, the IDF spokesperson said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency meeting at the Kiriya in Tel Aviv just after the attack to discuss Israel's response. Among those participating were Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen Aviv Kochavi, National Security Council head Meir Ben-Shabbat, Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) head Nadav Argaman, and other senior security establishment officials.

IDF says Hamas fired rockets at Tel Aviv

[IsraelTimes] The IDF says that Hamas fired the two rockets at Tel Aviv. The short statement, which gave no further details, comes despite denials from the Hamas political and military wings that it was behind the first rocket fire on Tel Aviv since 2014.

Hamas health ministry says no reports of casualties

[IsraelTimes] The Hamas-run health ministry says there are no immediate reports of casualties in the Israeli strikes on Gaza targets. Hamas and Islamic Jihad withdrew their forces from many of their bases and posts in anticipation of the IDF strikes after the two missiles were fired at Tel Aviv.

Egyptian Delegation Leaves Gaza Strip After Rocket Fire- Report

[Jpost] An Egyptian delegation in Gazoo discussing possible agreements with Israel left the coastal enclave after a pair of rockets were fired at Tel Aviv, according to media reports on Thursday. The delegation left at the behest of Israel, according to reports.
The Times of Israel has continued liveblogging overnight as events continue.

IDF says it hit over 100 targets in Gaza

IDF spokesman Ronen Manelis says the IDF hit over 100 Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip overnight in response to the two rockets fired at Tel Aviv.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

During the night Palestinians fired 5 rockets at Israeli communities along the Gaza border. Iron Dome intercepted three, one apparently fell in an open are and the fifth failed to clear the border.

#1  In an unusual move, the organizing committee for the March of Return in Gaza announced Friday morning that it has called off the weekly protest along the Israel-Gaza border in light of the flare-up. The committee said in a statement that the march was canceled in an effort to prevent further escalation and Palestinian casualties.

Almost like they can turn on/off the "grassroots protests" as needed....

Errant policemen
[DAWN] THE police in this country suffer from an image problem, and every so often incidents make the headlines revealing just why there is such a massive trust deficit between the law enforcers and the citizens.

Four coppers in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
were dismissed from service on Tuesday after a video emerged of them harassing a couple at the city’s Sea View beach.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, and after the video went viral, police authorities moved in to take action against the errant cops.

The video is quite disturbing, as it shows the thuggish coppers in uniform manhandling a woman. The man making the video said the lawbreaking cops approached him and his wife and demanded money, while pointing guns at them.

Higher authorities in the police have done the right thing by taking action against such individuals, while Clifton SP Sohai Aziz, in whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, was absolutely correct in emphasising while talking to the media that coppers "are not supposed to engage in moral policing".

It is a sad fact that in a city that suffers from a high crime rate, many coppers are more interested in extorting money from couples or shaking down motorists and bikers than curbing crime.

Some men in uniform are apparently not motivated to protect and to serve, but, instead, to harass the public.

The only way to address this malaise is to take strict disciplinary action against those found indulging in unlawful behaviour.

Moreover, the force requires more women officers, such as the current Clifton SP, to sensitise the police and make it a more professional force.

When coppers break the law, they give a bad name to the whole force, and the sacrifices of many honest officers who have laid down their lives in the line of duty are forgotten.

Action against black sheep in the police force needs to be a constant process, and there must be zero tolerance for the sort of atrocious behaviour witnessed recently in Karachi.

The latest on the denizens of the Amalia, NM jihadi compound, raided when the FBI was looking for Abdul Ghani Wahhaj, the handicapped toddler kidnapped by his dad from his mother in Georgia. Abdul Ghani’s body was later discovered on the grounds. Eleven other children found during the raid on the compound were malnourished but in the process of being trained to be loyal little jihadis.
[DOJ] A federal grand jury sitting in Albuquerque, New Mexico returned a superseding indictment on March 13 charging Jany Leveille,
...Siraj ibn Wahhaj’s’s wife and a Haitian citizen who overstayed her visitor visa two decades ago...
36, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj,
...the leader of the group, also known as Siraj Wahhaj and Sirraj Ibn Wahhaj. Siraj [Jr.] is the son of Siraj Wahhaj [Sr.], a Brooklyn imam born Jeffrey Kearse, who was an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Siraj Sr. also was a character witness in the trial of convicted terror plotter Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman (“the blind sheikh”), is connected the several branches of the Moslem Brotherhood in America, and mentors pussy hat leader Linda Sarsour....

with federal offenses related to terrorism, kidnapping and firearms violations.

The announcement was made by Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers for the National Security Division, U.S. Attorney John C. Anderson for the District of New Mexico, Assistant Director Michael McGarrity of the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division and Special Agent in Charge James Langenberg of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office.

These defendants were previously charged by indictment on Sept. 11, 2018, with a conspiracy relating to the possession of firearms and ammunition by an alien illegally and unlawfully in the United States. The original indictment also charged Leveille with possessing firearms and ammunition as an alien illegally and unlawfully in the United States.

The superseding indictment charges all of the defendants with participating in a conspiracy from October 2017 to August 2018 to provide material support and resources, including currency, training, weapons, and personnel, knowing and intending that they were to be used in preparation for and in carrying out attacks to kill officers and employees of the United States, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2339A.

"The indictment alleges that the defendants conspired to provide material support in preparation for violent attacks against federal law enforcement officers and members of the military," said Assistant Attorney General Demers. "Advancing beliefs through terror and violence has no place in America, and the National Security Division continues to make protecting against terrorism its top priority."

"The superseding indictment alleges a conspiracy to stage deadly attacks on American soil," said U.S. Attorney John C. Anderson. "These allegations remind us of the dangers of terrorism that continue to confront our nation, and the allegation concerning the death of a young child only underscores the importance of prompt and effective intervention by law enforcement. I commend the FBI, DHS, ATF, Taos County Sheriff’s Office, and the Eighth Judicial District Attorney’s Office for their ongoing diligence and outstanding work in identifying and disabling imminent threats of targeted violence. Secret Mossad Files Show Underground Iran Nuke Facility Older Than Admitted
[Jpost] This discovery could be significant because it shows that Iran is still lying to the international community about a nuclear facility that has no reasonable use other than military.

New evidence disclosed in Iran’s secret nuclear files taken by the Mossad show that its underground Fordow nuclear facility is older than it has admitted, according to a think-tank report.

This discovery could be significant, says the Institute for Science and International Security, because it shows that Iran is still lying to the international community about a nuclear facility that has no reasonable use other than military.

The report says that photographs and documents it reviewed from the materials taken from Iran in January 2018 by the Mossad date the facility to as much as five years earlier than the Islamic Theocratic Republic has led the world to believe.

In 2009, the international community confronted Tehran with the fact that it had uncovered Fordow, which Iran had worked hard to conceal.

The catching of Iran red-handed building a secret underground nuclear facility at the time was the beginning of what rallied Russia, China and the UN Security Council to pressure the Islamic Theocratic Republic with sanctions.

Those sanctions eventually led Tehran to sign the 2015 nuclear deal.

As part of the deal, Iran was obligated to disclose all facets of its nuclear program that it had not previously disclosed or regarding which it had provided false information.

Iran indicated that the facility dated back to 2007.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
its secret nuclear files reviewed by the think-tank show that it may date back to as early as 2002, with extremely strong evidence that it dated back to at least 2004.

The report said that, "Iran’s determination to keep open this deeply buried enrichment site extended into the negotiations over the JCPOA [nuclear deal] and even today, despite the plant having no credible civilian nuclear justification."

It continued saying, "The Nuclear Archive raises again the deception of Iran about its past nuclear weapons activities and raises profound questions about the true purpose of this facility" in the present and when the deal’s nuclear restrictions expire in the future.

The think-tank slammed the international community for permitting Iran to continue to operate Fordow, saying that "speaks volumes of its failure to first determine and then ensure that Iran’s nuclear program is truly peaceful."

In an interview with The Jerusalem Post in January, the think-tank’s director, David Albright, said that there were 3,000 IR-1 centrifuges for enriching uranium at Fordow which could potentially be used to produce one to two nuclear bombs per year.

Like many issues with Iran, it is these ambiguities which also leave open questions about whether the Islamic Theocratic Republic could develop more nuclear weapons than expected and at a faster speed.

New DoD policy: stick to your birth s3x
[Military.com] The 9,000 transgender troops in uniform will continue to serve, officials say.

Beginning April 12, transgender individuals with gender dysphoria or who have initiated treatment or swapped genders will no longer be able to join the U.S. military, in most cases.

The Defense Department released a policy Tuesday that allows the roughly 1,000 existing transgender troops who have gender dysphoria or have transitioned to remain in the military and continue seeking career opportunities, such as promotions, advanced training, transfers and officer accessions. About 9,000 individuals identified themselves as transgender in a recent survey of active-duty troops, yet just 1,000 personnel have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, Pentagon officials said Wednesday during a call with news hounds.

Anyone with a history of gender dysphoria who wants to join the military will have to show they have been comfortable with the gender they had at birth for at least the past three years, have not undertaken any medical treatments to transition and are willing to adhere to the standards associated with their biological sex.

Individuals who currently have a contract with the military services but have not yet entered enlisted training or taken a commission are grandfathered under the 2016 policy, which means they will be allowed to serve regardless of a diagnosis of gender dysphoria and can pursue medical care for gender transition while serving.

DoD officials insisted Wednesday that the new policy does not bar transgender people from serving, adding that it only restricts individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria. The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines gender dysphoria as experiencing "significant distress and/or problems functioning associated with being uncomfortable with the gender they were assigned" at birth.

The U.S. military does not discriminate against transgender persons, one official insisted.

"This is not a ban on transgender individuals serving in the military. In fact, the policy actually prohibits the denial of accessions or involuntary separation solely on the basis of gender identity," the official said. "We realize not all transgender individuals have gender dysphoria."

Activists for the LGBTQ community, however, say the new policy will restrict troops' human rights

Hamas security forces disperse rare protests against the group in Gaza
[IsraelTimes] A reporter says journalists were prevented from filming or taking pictures; protests call for improvement of quality of life in the Strip
A video of the activities can be seen at the link. Another brief video can be seen here.
Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw,-run security forces broke up protests against the terror group in the Gazoo Strip Thursday, eyewitnesses said, cracking down on a rare public show of dissent in the coastal enclave.

Dozens of security officials, many in plain clothes, dispersed a demonstration in northern Gazoo, the eyewitnesses said. Dozens of people had been protesting there.

Journalists were prevented from filming or taking pictures at the protest, an AFP news hound said.

In a separate protest in central Gazoo, dozens of people demonstrated, including by setting tires on fire.

Hamas-run police front man Ayman al-Batniji said in a statement that "police in the area of Deir Balah dealt with a group of citizens who closed roads and ignited fires," referring to the protest in central Gazoo.

"The police have restored calm and order, and a number of violators were enjugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
The protests had been organized to call for an improvement in the quality of life in Gazoo, which suffers from high unemployment, widespread poverty and poor electricity and water infrastructure.

They were also seen as a challenge to the Hamas terror group, which has ruled the Strip since 2007.

A statement purporting to be from the organizers said the protests were non-political and against the rising cost of living and taxes in the Strip.

Videos posted on social media appeared to show Hamas security forces firing in the air to disperse the protests.

Social media posts were accompanied with the hashtag "We want to live" in Arabic.

The protests had ended by Thursday evening and the situation was calm, an AFP journalist on the scene and eyewitnesses said.

The Paleostinian Non-Governmental Organisations Network, which includes more than 100 charities, said in a statement it "strongly condemned the campaign of arrests and aggression that the security forces launched in Jabalia in northern Gazoo against the right of dozens of citizens."

It said the protesters were "gathering peacefully to demand an improvement in the life quality in the Gazoo Strip."

Hussein al-Sheikh, a close confidant of Paleostinian Authority Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

, expressed support for the protesters.

"Gazoo is rising up in the face of oppressors," he wrote on Twitter.

Indonesia Says Uncovers Huge Explosives Stash after Suicide Blast
[AnNahar] Indonesian police said Thursday they had uncovered a huge stash of explosives linked to a terror suspect whose wife blew up herself and a child following a dramatic standoff at their home.

The discovery of some 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of assembled explosives and bomb-making materials raised fears that a major attack was being planned, a month before national elections and less than a year after Indonesia was rocked by a wave of deadly suicide kabooms.

The suicide kaboom early Wednesday morning came after police had jugged

-linked jihadist network has been blamed for attacks last May in Indonesia's second-biggest city, Surabaya, the deadliest in years to rock the world's biggest Moslem majority nation.

Officers surrounded the arrested krazed killer's home in Sibolga on Sumatra island when the confrontation began.

During a nearly 12-hour standoff, the wife lobbed an bomb at security personnel, wounding a police officer, authorities said.

They later found parts of a woman's corpse and that of at least one child. Police initially said they thought two of the couple's children might have been killed.

"We're still trying to formally identify his wife because the body isn't one piece," said national police front man Dedi Prasetyo.
“Hey, Sarge — I found a nose and a left ear, but they look like two different sizes. Ya got another envelope for the remains?”
Police said they uncovered a large cache of bombs and kabooms in the couple's home and another in the same city.

"A total of 300 kilogrammes of bombs and bomb-making materials were discovered," Prasetyo said.

On Thursday, police destroyed materials in a controlled kaboom in a field.

University of Indonesia terrorism expert Stanislaus Riyanta said the large stash hinted that a serious attack was being planned.

"This is frightening," he told AFP.

"The impact of bombs depends on the materials used. But this amount -- 300 kilogrammes -- if used all at one time, could certainly be very destructive and deadly, especially in a densely populated area."

The arrest of Hamzah, who police said was a skilled bomb maker, comes days after authorities arrested two other terror suspects in other parts of the country. Police said all three were connected.

Last year, two families carried out attacks at churches in Surabaya, killing a dozen people and children of the attackers, including two maiden of tender yearss.

On Thursday, a Jakarta court sentenced several bully boyz linked to the Surabaya bombings with prison sentences ranging from about three to 10 years.

Since the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed over 200 people including scores of tourists, Indonesia has seen a string of deadly attacks that have tested its long-held reputation for religious tolerance.

Iraq
Peshmerga learn to identify, clear chemical weapons used by ISIS
Germany has been very active, as far as I can tell, about providing all sorts of military and non-military training to the Kurds in Iraq.
[Rudaw] Peshmerga officers in Erbil have completed a month-long counter-chemical weapons training course under the supervisor of the German military.

Islam Askandar Zebari, head of the Counter Chemical Regiment Command of the Peshmerga Ministry, said the aim of the training was to introduce the Peshmerga forces to the different chemical weapons and methods of delivery used by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) bandidos turbans during the war.

"The 22 officers were from various brigades of the Peshmerga Ministry," Zebari said.

"Now all the departments, regiments, and brigades of the Peshmerga Ministry have specialized officers in chemical weapons."

"The training aimed at teaching them how to protect themselves from chemical attacks and also determine what kinds of substances are used in them," he added.

ISIS bandidos turbans attacked Kurdish Peshmerga on multiple fronts with mustard and chlorine gas, wounding dozens. Tests carried out by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) proved the group had used mustard gas against the Peshmerga.

The Peshmerga Ministry decided to establish the department in 2016 at the peak of the fight against ISIS, Zebari said.

The training session, which ended Wednesday, is the third of its kind since the department was founded.

Zebari said they will soon hold similar training for the Peshmerga’s party-affiliated 70 and 80 unit forces, Zeravani, and Defense and Emergency.

In the training, they used advanced tools such as the LCD3.3, a detector efficient enough "to detect toxic substances," Zebari said.

Amir Mohammed, a Peshmerga officer from Brigade 12 in the Peshmerga Ministry described the four-week training as "very, very important".

"They taught us how to protect ourselves, our people, and Kurdistan from the threats of chemical weapons," Mohammed told Rudaw English. "In the training we learnt about all the various types of chemicals."

"Kurds have in the past suffered from chemical attacks such as Halabja and the ISIS war."

Around 5,000 Kurds died and more than 10,000 were maimed when Saddam Hussein’s regime bombed the city of Halabja with chemical weapons in the spring of 1988.

Mohammed described how they were taught to use protective masks. Gas masks can protect the eyes and lungs, but normal military uniforms provide little to no protection, as mustard gas will penetrate clothing and be absorbed across any body surface.

The four-week course, which will soon be rolled out to other units and brigades, includes both classroom and practical sessions. Photo: Islam Askandar Zebari

Since ISIS attacked the Kurdistan Region in August 2014, igniting the war with Iraq’s Kurds, Peshmerga forces urged the international community to increase support. One country which has provided substantial military training is Germany.

Imran Muhsin, another Peshmerga officer who took part in the training, praised the German military personnel who supported their training.

"Germany played a pivotal role by supporting the counter-chemical department in the Peshmerga Ministry," he said.

"The type of weapons ISIS used, we did not have any information about. Now, we distinguish them and know what substances are used ... how to defuse them and end their danger," he added.

The German military has trained Peshmerga at its own facilities in Germany and has pledged to supply all units and brigades with protectives masks and outfits.

High Court (PHC) last year.

Hussein, meanwhile, was convicted by a trial court, but partially cleared of the charges by the PHC, which ruled that he had abetted the crime. He then appealed the high court order before the SC.

The order issued on Wednesday by a three-member bench of the SC, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, said: "The alleged victim was a grown up girl and there is no evidence available on the record to establish that she had tried to escape from the motorcar or that the appellant had in any manner foiled her attempt in that regard."

"In these peculiar circumstances of the case there are serious doubts available vis-à-vis the allegation of abetment levelled against the appellant. It could well be that the appellant knew that some sexual activity was taking place on the back seat of the motorcar and that he had kept quiet."

The court observed that "we have not been able to answer that question in the positive."

Subsequently, the bench held: "In this view of the matter the appellant has to be extended the benefit of doubt.

"This appeal is, therefore, allowed, the conviction and sentence of the appellant are set aside and he is acquitted of the charge by extending the benefit of doubt to him."

... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
by the police after opening fire on the police headquarters and the security forces, one security force member was maimed in the firing" said Nusrat Rahimi, acting MoI front man.

"Security situation is totally under the control of the security forces inside the police headquarters and all over Mazar-e-Sharif city," added Rahimi.
Balkh police have confirmed that Mubarez arrived in Mazar-e-Sharif on Wednesday who was accompanied by a delegation of the Ministry of Interior.

last year.

Noor has called on the people in the province not to go to their works and shut their businesses in protest to the controversial appointment.

But residents in Mazar-e-Sharif have expressed concerns over violence.

Reports, meanwhile, indicate that special units of Afghan National Police (ANP) were deployed in key areas of the province to avoid a possible security threat on eve of the appointment of new commander.

Local officials in Balkh so far have not given further details about the issue.

According to Munir Ahmad Farhad, a front man to Balkh governor, discussion is underway between tribal elders, MPs, members of Balkh provincial council and government representative to resolve the issue.

Some residents have said that security situation deteriorated in the province in recent months and that if the reshuffling lead to stability they will welcome such a move.

This comes at a time that the 209 Shaheen Army Corps in a statement said that the army is on red alert to ensure security and safety of the people’s life and property.

Seven NATO Countries Hit Spending Target
[AnNahar] Seven of the 29 NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
countries hit the alliance's defense spending target in 2018, figures showed Thursday, an improvement over the year but probably not enough to satisfy Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
NATO's 2018 annual report showed sharp rises in defense spending, notably in the Baltic states and the Netherlands but economic giant Germany still lags.

Apart from the U.S., six members hit the target of spending two percent of GDP on defense in 2018: Britannia, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
Apart from the U.S., six members hit the target of spending two percent of GDP on defense in 2018: Britannia, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

Though NATO countries have only promised to try to hit two percent by 2024, the failure of many to even get close to that has infuriated Trump, who has reportedly threatened to pull out of the alliance if the European allies does not boost spending immediately.

Germany, Europe's economic powerhouse, has come in for particular criticism and once again it fell well short of the target.

While German defense spending went up from $45 billion to $50 billion, the country's growing economy meant the figure relative to its GDP stayed flat at 1.23 percent.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Berlin's moves to increase its budget but insisted it must redouble its efforts.

"Germany has after years of cutting defense spending started to increase, and actually added a significant amount of money to the defense budgets," Stoltenberg told news hounds.

"But I expect more. I expect further increases and Germany has made it clear they plan to further increase defense spending."

Stoltenberg insisted in January that pressure from Trump had led to allies spending more.

The former Norwegian prime minister regularly points out that overall NATO defense spending is rising and that, by the end of 2020, allies will have added $100 billion since Trump took office in 2016.

"We face a paradox: At a time when some are questioning the strength of the transatlantic bond, we are actually doing more and in more places than ever before," he said on Thursday.

U.S. military spending dwarfs that of the rest of the alliance. In 2018 Washington spent nearly $700 billion on defense, compared with just $280 billion for all the European NATO allies combined.

Last month a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) showed that NATO's 27 European countries fell short of the two percent target by $102 billion in 2018.

The IISS said European NATO members would "collectively have had to increase their spending by 38 percent" to hit the two percent target in 2018.

NATO officials expected seven European member states to hit the target in 2018 but Romania fell just short on 1.92 percent because its economy grew faster than expected.

Stoltenberg confirmed on Thursday that he would accept an invitation to address a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress in early April as part of NATO's 70th birthday celebrations. NATO officials say it will be the first time an alliance secretary general has addressed both houses of Congress.

#2  Maybe Germany can reach into the cupboard and use some of the 60 billions we send them each year from our unfair trade agreements.

Just kidding, they need that money to spend on welfare for their people. If they had to shoulder their fair share of NATO, their country would collapse as the angry citizens vote the government out of office.

So we're left with the status quo, where they accept the security we provide but shit all over us for providing it.

Leb Army Denies Coming under Gunfire on Syria Border
[AnNahar] The Lebanese Army on Thursday denied reports that one of its patrols had come under fire in the Hermel area of al-Matrabeh on Syria's border, clarifying that the shots "were had gun sex" and "from within Syrian territory."

In a statement, the army also urged media outlets to seek accuracy when publishing reports about the military institution.

State-run National News Agency had earlier reported that unknown assailants had opened heavy gunfire and shelled a Lebanese Army infantry patrol in Matrabeh.

NNA said the soldiers were unharmed and no casualties were reported. The assailants managed to flee towards the Syrian territory, it added.

PTI govt cannot be trusted with cracking down against banned organisations: Bilawal
[DAWN] PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Thursday said he does not trust PTI with cracking down on banned
...the word banned seems to have a different meaning in Pakistain than it does in most other places. Or maybe it simply lacks any meaning at all...
organization
s while reiterating his demand that the government remove from the federal cabinet a trio of ministers who he accuses of having "long-held ties" with proscribed organizations.

"We doubt your intentions [of the promised crackdown against proscribed organizations] because you were allied with proscribed organizations [when you] fought elections," Bilawal said, referring to the ruling party.

"Everyone knows that three ministers in the cabinet have a long history with banned outfits. Until you remove them, we will keep doubting you," he said.

"One minister's video went viral on social media. He can be seen assuring them [leaders of a proscribed party] that 'we will not take action against you until our government is in place'.

"The other minister made inductions into the PTI from UN-banned organizations like HUM (Harkatul Mujahideen al-Islami) during the elections. He then said on the floor of the house that 'If you are speaking against banned outfits and the National Action Plan then that is against the country's interest.

"The third one not only has a long history of being associated with banned outfits, but he has also helped run bully boy outfits and training camps," the PPP leader alleged.

"Folks with this mentality should not be in the 'Naya Pakistain' cabinet," he said.

The 'viral video' Bilawal is referring to could possibly be one which features Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Khan Afridi giving assurances to a group of men.

In the video, which has been circulating on social media for quite some time, Afridi can be seen in the company of a group of men, one of whom briefs him about the authorities' plan to put the Milli Moslem League ‐ which had been the political front for the Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
‐ on a list of proscribed organizations.

To this, Afridi replies: "God willing, till we are in the assembly and till the PTI stands, no one can ... Forget Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
sahab, we will support whoever supports Pakistain and its [sovereign] right. This is our belief. It will be our request to you to come and sit in the assembly and see for yourself whether we [are the ones who] stand for the kalma-e-haq, or others do."

It bears mentioning that the government has stated as a matter of policy that it wishes to 'mainstream' bully boy groups by creating economic, social and political incentives to encourage them to give up violence as a way of life. This policy was unequivocally opposed by Bilawal in the National Assembly last week.

50 Iranian drones conduct massive 'way to Jerusalem' exercise - report
[Jpost] The point of the drill is to showcase Iran’s military prowess.

However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
Hajizadeh also pointed to drones that look like the US Predator MQ-1 as evidence that Iran has achieved results. The Shahed 129, first flown in 2012, is Iran’s copy of the Predator.

The point of the drill is to showcase Iran’s military prowess. It comes in the wake of a large naval drill in February and frequent new tests of ballistic missiles. Last year, Iran fired ballistic missiles at Kurdish opposition groups in Iraq and also at ISIS in Syria. It is flexing its muscles in the Persian Gulf and has allegedly supplied Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
with advanced missile and drone technology.

Hajizadeh said that: "One of the features of this exercise is the power to design and plan co-flying UAVs in a very small geographic area that has brought about the rise of a new air power in Islamic Iran." According to the reports, the drones operated in several provinces in Iran.

Southern Poverty Law Center Fires Founder Morris Dees
[FreeBeacon] The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has fired its founder, Morris Dees.

The SPLC announced Thursday afternoon that Dees—who in 1971 co-founded the far-left nonprofit, which has regularly been cited by major outlets over the years for its "hate" group designations that oftentimes lump Republican groups in with actual racist groups—has parted ways with its founder.

"As a civil rights organization, the SPLC is committed to ensuring that the conduct of our staff reflects the mission of the organization and the values we hope to instill in the world," Richard Cohen, the SPLC's president, said in a statement. "When one of our own fails to meet those standards, no matter his or her role in the organization, we take it seriously and must take appropriate action."

"Today we announced a number of immediate, concrete next steps we're taking, including bringing in an outside organization to conduct a comprehensive assessment of our internal climate and workplace practices, to ensure that our talented staff is working in the environment that they deserve—one in which all voices are heard and all staff members are respected."

The SPLC has amassed a lucrative amount of money for its operations. The group's most recent tax forms show that the SPLC now has a half billion dollars in assets despite a fall of more than $20 million in donations, the Washington Free Beacon recently reported. The group also now has $121 million parked in offshore accounts.

The SPLC could not be reached for comment on its firing of Dees.

SPLC Co-Founder Morris Dees Fired, Outside Audit Ordered.

[PJMedia] In 1994, the Montgomery Advertiser took a deep dive into the organization’s activities, uncovering some evidence of discrimination against black employees.

Last December, a Baltimore lawyer filed a lawsuit taking aim at the SPLC’s tax-exempt status. His suit is moving toward the discovery period, and SPLC’s decision to clean house may have resulted from this litigation, first reported by PJ Media.

Former Sen. Birch Bayh, author of two constitutional amendments, dies
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Former Sen. Birch Bayh, an Indiana Democrat who wrote two constitutional amendments that cleared Congress and the states, but who lost his Senate seat in an upset to future Vice President Dan Quayle, died at 91.

The cause was pneumonia, his family said in a statement — including his son Evan Bayh, who held his father’s old Senate seat from 1999-2011 and who previously served as governor of Indiana.

Birch Bayh, a Terre Haute, Ind., native, served as an MP with the United States Army in Allied-occupied Germany following World War II. He won a seat in the Indiana House of Representatives and quickly rose to speaker after Democrats unexpectedly won a majority during the Eisenhower recession of the late 1950s.

Vermont town swears in goat as new mayor ‐ who immediately defecates
This newly sworn-in Vermont mayor is the GOAT.

Lincoln, a 3-year-old goat, was elected last week as Fair Haven, Vermont’s, pet mayor with 13 votes, according to The Rutland Herald.

Following her swearing-in ceremony Tuesday, the Nubian goat’s first act in office raised some eyebrows.

Lincoln couldn’t wait for a bathroom and defecated on the ground, the Burlington Free Press reported.

The police chief was reportedly quick to grab a broom and dust pan to clean up the mess before her approval rating could go down with constituents.

The goat narrowly beat out a dog named Sammie Viger, a Samoyed, who came in second with an impressive 11 votes.

A total of 53 ballots were cast and 16 animals were submitted for consideration for the highly coveted position.

Other candidates included a cat named Sassy Towle, a dog named Stella Heibler and a gerbil named Crystal.

When not serving as mayor, Lincoln spends time at her day job: groundskeeper at her owner’s home with her best friend Lucy, a fellow Nubian goat, handling the brush in the backyard.

The pet election was set up by Town Manager Joe Gunter, who told The Rutland Herald that he got the idea while reading a newspaper article about a small town in Michigan doing the same thing.

Fair Haven does not have a mayor, but Gunter viewed the exercise as a productive way to raise money for a new playground and teach kids about getting involved in local politics.

Candidates were recruited by sending flyers home with elementary school children, according to VT Digger, and $5 donations were requested to register an animal.

While the donations only totaled about $100, a far cry from the $80,000 needed for new equipment to update the playground, the town plans to continue to try and raise money through a GoFundMe page and by applying for state grants, local station WCAX reported.

Lori Loughlin Daughter Olivia Leaves Yacht Owned By Top Usc Official
[TMZ] As Lori Loughlin traveled from Vancouver to L.A. Tuesday night to surrender to federal authorities in the college bribery scandal -- which got her daughter, Olivia Jade, into USC -- Olivia spent the night on the yacht of the Chairman of USC's Board of Trustees ... but she's off the boat now, TMZ has learned.

We've learned 19-year-old Olivia was on Rick Caruso's yacht in the Bahamas. Caruso's daughter, Gianna, Olivia and several other friends were spending spring break in the area.

Gianna and Olivia have been friends for quite some time, occasionally posting photos of them together on social media.

Caruso, a billionaire who has major real estate holdings including The Grove in L.A., tells TMZ, "My daughter and a group of students left for spring break prior to the government's announcement yesterday. Once we became aware of the investigation, the young woman decided it would be in her best interests to return home." Olivia is off the yacht.

Caruso was elected Chairman of USC's Board of Trustees last year. We're told the Board will NOT decide the fate of Olivia and other students involved in the case. That decision is left squarely in the hands of the University's President.

By the way, Caruso came out strong Tuesday in the wake of the indictments, saying, "The charges filed today against employees of USC are disturbing and the alleged activity is absolutely wrong. I am saddened that these people would abuse their positions of trust and, as the government has alleged, victimize USC in the process. There is no option other than zero tolerance for this type of behavior. As a result, USC has fired the alleged wrongdoers."

#1  ...The official word is that none of the kids are under investigation - yet - but I suspect it's not going to be long, and I suspect that Miss Olivia Jade is going to be one of the ones standing tall in front of a Federal judge. She (and her younger sister) have now both withdrawn from USC as of this morning, and I'm wondering just how hard the family legal team had to lean on her to do it - she doesn't seem like the kind to take a hint.

Venezuela turns lights back on as power restored, but access to uncontaminated water is critical
[FOXNEWS] Power has returned to Venezuela after a week after the country was plunged into darkness, but access to uncontaminated water remains critical.

Venezuelan Information Minister Jorge Rodrigues said at a presser on Wednesday that power was 100 percent restored, adding: "President Nicolas Maduro
Venezuela's attempt at producing a Muammar Qadaffy...
has decided to resume work activities throughout the country" on Thursday.

"School activities remain suspended for another 24 hours."

Water, however, remains a problem.

The blackout worsened the quality of drinkable water in the country, with many residents reporting what appeared to be oil-contaminated black water coming out of their taps.

The power outage hampered the ability of utilities to pump water to homes.

Venezuelan news hound Heberlizeth González tweeted Wednesday: "The water shortage situation...is terrible. There are areas that have been without water for more than two months. This morning water started coming out like this ‐ not at all suitable for consumption."

She posted a video of black water running from a tap.

Jose Perez told Sky News that people are so desperate for water, they are taking their chances, regardless of whether it might be contaminated.

"You don't know where this water is coming from, if it's treated or not treated, you take water home without knowing the consequences of it in the future," he said.

"The sad thing about everything we are living through in Venezuela is the sadness of everything happening in our nation, the sadness of what is happening with all of the youth at this time - it's not a life."
An Nahar adds:
Venezuela's public employees were called to return to work Thursday after the government ended a nearly week-long hiatus caused by an unprecedented nationwide blackout that deepened widespread anger against President Nicolas Maduro.

Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez said in an address on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
Wednesday that Maduro decided the public sector would resume work on Thursday, although state schools would remain closed for an extra day.

The span of decreed public holidays started last Friday, a day after power went out in 22 of Venezuela's 23 states, disrupting transport, causing stockpiled food to rot in fridges and forcing some Caracas residents to source water from sewage outflows as taps ran dry.

By Wednesday, electricity was back in Caracas and other regions. But swaths of western Venezuela remained without power, including the city of Maracaibo where more than 500 shops reported having been looted, according to a retailers' association.

The blackout -- the worst in the history of the once-rich oil-producing nation -- deepened an already grave economic crisis.

According to Ecoanalitica, an economic analysis firm, the vast power cut cost Venezuela $875 million.

"There is major paralysis in many critical areas in the oil sector," it said, estimating that up to 70 percent of the one million barrels of oil a day Venezuela still managed to produce could end up being affected.

"No water, no power, no medicine, no cash, no transport. This has been dreadful," one Caracas resident, Victoria Milano, 40, told AFP.

The worsening situation has bolstered Juan Guaido, an opposition leader whose claim to be Venezuela's interim president is backed by the US and 50 other countries.

"This desperation and darkness is caused by the dictatorship," he told supporters on Tuesday, alleging that 20 people had died in hospitals because of a lack of power.

He added that he expected to take over the presidential palace "very soon."

Venezuela's pro-Maduro prosecutor's office has hit back with a criminal investigation against Guaido for "sabotage," alleging he had a hand in the blackout. But the opposition leader remains free after the US warned of "consequences" if he were placed in durance vile

Egypt legalises status of 165 churches, service buildings
[AlAhram] Egypt's cabinet has legalised the status of 165 churches and church service buildings in Egypt, the official state gazette reported on Thursday.

A committee assigned in 2017 with reviewing the status of unlicensed churches has so far legalised 783 churches and church service buildings.

The committee is headed by the prime minister and includes the ministers of defence, housing, local development, legal and parliamentary affairs, justice and antiquities.

The committee also includes three representatives from the General Intelligence Service, the Administrative Control Authority, and interior ministry's national security department, and a representative of each Christian sect in Egypt.

Egypt passed a law in 2016 easing regulations on church building.
