Mom Ignores Doctor When Her Sick 2-Year-Old Starts Feeling Better, Child Services Send a SWAT Team
[Reason] Chandler, Arizona, cops broke through the door of a family's home in the middle of the night, stormed in, pointed their guns, handcuffed the father, and watched as the state's Department of Child Safety (DCS) took custody of the parents' three kids‐all because mom had decided her toddler's fever was not serious enough to merit a trip to the hospital.

It was dinnertime on February 25 when the pregnant mother took her 2-year-old to the doctor with a fever of over 100. The doctor told her to take him to the emergency room, fearing that because the boy was unvaccinated, perhaps he had meningitis‐a life-threatening disease.

The doctor called the hospital to alert them. But by the time the mother and child left his office, the boy was "laughing and playing with his siblings," according to this excellent piece by Dianna M. Nanez in The Arizona Republic. Mom took his temperature again, and it was almost normal. So instead of going to the emergency room, the family went home. The mom called the doctor to say her boy's fever had broken and she wasn't going to the emergency room. The doctor told her she should go anyway, so she agreed she would‐but then she didn't.

That's when the madness began.

The hospital called the doctor to tell him the toddler hadn't arrived. The doctor called DCS. And DCS requested the cops check on the family as a caseworker headed over.

And then, according to The Arizona Republic:

It was about 10:30 p.m. when two police officers knocked on the family's door. The officers heard someone coughing.

Officer Tyler Cascio wrote in a police report that he knocked on the door several times but no one answered.

A neighbor approached the officers and police explained the situation. The woman said she knew her neighbor and that "she was a good mother." At the request of officers, the neighbor called the mother and said police wanted to speak with her.

The DCS caseworker arrived and updated police on the toddler's fever and the mother choosing not to take her child to the hospital. The officer called the family's doctor, who repeated her recommendation that the mother take the child to the hospital. ...

At about 11:30 p.m., the caseworker informed officers that DCS planned to obtain a "temporary custody notice" from a judge to remove the child for emergency medical aid.

Just after midnight the caseworker got that notice, which is required by law. Matters subsequently escalated:

Cascio wrote that officers consulted with the police criminal investigations bureau and SWAT.

"Based upon the court order, the intent of DCS to serve the order, and exigency to ensure the health and welfare of the child, the decision was made to force entry to the home if the parents refused to respond to verbal requests," according to police records. Police knocked, saying they had a court order and would force entry if needed, according to police records.

And force they did:

It was after 1 a.m. when officers kicked down the family's door. One officer carried a shield, while another was described as having "lethal coverage." Officers pointing guns yelled, "Chandler Police Department," and entered the house.

The rest of the story is equally nuts. The kids were all placed in separate foster homes. When the case got to juvenile court 10 days later, DCS requested it be closed to the public. The judge refused.

But then it seemed as if DCS decided to make everything harder for the parents, because now the press was interested, as was the Arizona DCS Oversight Group, a local organization that fights for families' rights, and a state legislator, Rep. Kelly Townsend (R–Mesa), who had helped write the law requiring DCS to get a warrant before removing a child. Townsend has been lobbing zingers like, "What about the parents' rights to decide what's best for their child? Parents felt the child was fine. Next thing we know, the Gestapo is at their door."

In court, DCS tried to convince the judge, Jennifer Green, to bar the press from covering the dispute. A lawyer for the agency even claimed that the parents had gone against the best interests of the children by involving the media. Green rejected this argument, saying, "In Arizona we like our courts to be open."

However, the judge ultimately sided with DCS, ruling that the children's removal was lawful and telling the parents "to remember that the state had them on a family-reunification plan and wants them to regain custody of their children."

The children's grandparents are undergoing a DCS review, and hope to be permitted to temporarily shelter the kids once that's approved. But there's no telling how long it will be before the kids can just go home to mom and dad.
This is your liberal utopia. The state controls your children. They just live with you and your parental responsibilities and judgement are either void or secondary to the state's judgement.

#9  This is not the first time overzealous doctors and child protective service social workers have combined to kidnap children from their caring parents. Recall Justina Pelletier, who spent sixteen months in a locked hospital psych ward, her parents forbidden to have unsupervised contact with her, because the doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital disagreed with the diagnosis of the experts at Tufts Medical Center.

I know of a similar case in California where a young child with a rare fragile bone disease (I don’t recall the precise name) was taken from his single mother and put in foster care on the assumption that the clearly loved child was being abused. When she finally got the boy back years later, she fled with him to the far side of the country must to make sure California child protective services couldn’t get their hands on him again. They stayed overnight with us on the way — he was charming, bright, and visbly relieved to be back with his mother.

The website MedicalKidnap.com is a bit obsessive about collecting stories and statistics on the subject.

Attorney Mark Geragos, dropped from CNN, says 'lame-ass' outlet should be renamed 'Cut and Run Network'
[Washington Examiner] Mark Geragos, a camera-ready attorney linked to lawyer Michael Avenatti's alleged extortion plot, isn't leaving his CNN perch quietly.

Geragos, 61, made hundreds of appearances on CNN while working for the news organization. CNN dropped him after the Wall Street Journal reported Geragos was named a co-conspirator with Avenatti in a $20 million extortion attempt of Nike. Geragos wasn’t charged in the Avanatti complaint.

The Los Angeles-based legal analyst on Tuesday told a radio host CNN is a "lame-ass organization" that should change its name to "Cut and Run Network."

"I’ve been texted by all of their anchors who are as outraged as I am," Geragos said. "God forbid that I start telling some of the stories for how I’ve covered for that lame-ass organization."

Geragos claimed CNN bookers and anchors are eager for him to return to the network's airwaves. They're particularly interested in having him discuss the Jussie Smollett case, concerning a Chicago-based actor who allegedly engineered an assault against himself so he could call it a hate crime ‐ only to have the charges dropped after a plea agreement with his lawyers.
An absolutely stunning loss. Mark will be sorely missed.

President Donald Trump says FBI will look into Jussie Smollett case
[USA Today] WASHINGTON ‐ President Donald Trump said Thursday he would have the FBI and the Justice Department review "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett case.

"It is an embarrassment to our Nation!" Trump tweeted.

It is unclear whether federal authorities would have any jurisdiction over the Smollett case.

Trump's critics said the president is playing racial politics with the Smollett case, seeking to undercut the victims of real racial violence that is on the rise.

"By claiming a false attack, Smollett tried to exploit the hate @realDonaldTrump has stirred," tweeted David Axelrod, adviser to President Barack Obama. "Now, predictably, Trump is moving to exploit Smollett’s exploitation. Talk about a vicious circle!"

Local prosecutors in Chicago announced Tuesday they were dropping disorderly conduct charges against Smollett for filing a false police report. The decision came less than three weeks after the actor was indicted on charges that he paid two men to stage a hoax attack to make him look like the victim of a racist hate crime.

Smollett’s legal team is taking offense with comments to the media by Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office officials, saying prosecutors and police are "continuing their campaign" against the actor. Prosecutors said they’ve dropped the charges, but insist that doesn't mean Smollett was exonerated of wrongdoing.

Europe
Germany: First postwar kosher restaurant opens in Leipzig
[DW] Cafe Salomon is Leipzig's first kosher restaurant since World War II. The Saxon city, where tens of thousands of Jews were persecuted in the 1930s, now has one of the most active Jewish communities in central Germany.

Hummus, fried fish and matzo ball soup: Those are some of the things you can find on the menu at Cafe Salomon, Leipzig's first kosher restaurant since World War II.

"We are trying to close a gap in Leipzig," according to Gotthard Dittrich, head of the Rahn school in Leipzig near the restaurant. He spoke with the Leipziger Volkszeitung (LVZ) newspaper at the store's opening ceremony on Tuesday.

According to Cafe Salomon's owner, Jakob Kerzhner, kosher-abiding Jews could only have meals "at home," he told LVZ. Most restaurants prepare meat, fish and dairy products in a kitchen, which is prohibited under Kashrut, Judaism's dietary laws.

The restaurant does not serve meat, because according to Kashrut laws milk and meat products have to be served in separate kitchens ‐ too complicated and expensive a process for Cafe Salomon. However, fish is on the menu, as well as other vegetarian and vegan options.

Jussie Smollett Will Be the New O.J.
[PJ] News that Jussie Smollett was being let off without doing time for tying up the city of Chicago and half the world's media with his bizarre accusation of being beaten by homophobic Trump supporters in the middle of the night was met by predictable fury from Chicago's mayor and chief of police.

But they needn't worry. Smollett should. He will be the new O. J., another man getting away with a crime he committed in full public view. That didn't work out very well for The Juice. In fact, he's a pariah for life. And it won't for Smollett either. He will be a despised person for the rest of his days and a symbol of unequal justice. He might as well have gone to jail, served the time, and been forgiven.

Yes, the media was playing up a potential sentence of 48 years, but that would have been unlikely to have happened. It would have been a few years and out, especially if the man apologized. Now he's in the situation of perpetually defending himself. Maybe he should hire a detective as O. J. did, promising to find just who the perps were ‐ someone perhaps in "the world of Faye Resnick," as Johnny Cochran famously put it.
Difficult to believe all of that was 25 years ago.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
When In Paris: The 'Auld Alliance' Scottish Pub - 80 Rue François Miron, 75004 Paris, France
[Auld Alliance] The ancient Franco-Scottish connection has it's roots in a centuries-long association of the two peoples in a political and military alliance.

It was an alliance of a classical pattern, many times repeated in the history of international relations. An old political commentator recommended, 'Stand well with your neighbour, but better with your neighbour's neighbour'. And so a Franco-Scottish alliance evolved that was as often as not defensive in nature to protect both parties from conquest by England.

First embodied in a written treaty in 1295 the alliance was to endure for nearly three hundred years, as long as the wars between Scotland and England lasted. At the time it was a step towards the opening of hostilities between Scotland and England. This led to the temporary conquest of Scotland by Edward 1 and to the resistance of the Scots, at first unsuccessfully under William Wallace and then successfully under Robert Bruce.

Wallace himself, after being defeated by the English in 1298, went to France to seek help; he and his fellow envoys received financial support while they were at the French court. Robert Bruce challenged Edward and when he was strong enough to hold a parliament (1309) a letter was sent to France acknowledging a message in which the French king had evidently expressed 'extraordinary and peculiar affection for King Robert' in accordance with 'the alliances formerly existing and maintained between the two kingdoms of France and Scotland.

When King Robert died in 1329 his son David was sent for safety to France as Scotland was once more in danger of conquest from England. The Hundred Years' War between France and England began at this time with the Franco-Scottish alliance being renewed and invoked many times. At the apex there was a series of royal marriages, intended to reinforce the alliance in a period when the direction of policy was mainly in the hands of monarchs. Again and again Scots went to fight alongside the French, especially when the latter's prospects looked particularly bleak. A good many of the Scots who went to France as warriors neither fell in battle nor returned home. Some of them settled in France where they were endowed with lands by French Kings or acquired estates by marrying heiresses. Thus Robert Patillo, from Dundee, who earned the nickname 'petit roi de Gascogne' for his military exploits, became Lord of Sauveterre.

Before the long wars with England began, Scots who wanted higher education had usually, it would seem gone to Oxford or Cambridge. The wars interrupted such scholarly intercourse, and it is significant that in 1326, the year in which Robert 1 renewed the league with France in the Treaty of Corbeil, provision was made for Scottish students in Paris. Just as Scottish scholars sometimes settled in France, so it was the way of Scots who went abroad as traders to spend long periods in France.

China, US poised to resume trade talks
BEIJING (AP) ‐ China says U.S. trade negotiators will arrive in Beijing late Thursday afternoon and start the new round of talks with a working dinner.

Chinese commerce ministry spokesman Gao Feng said the discussions are expected to last for a full day Friday.

The talks are aimed at ending a tariff war over Beijing’s technology ambitions amid official suggestions they might be making progress.

Thursday’s meeting is the latest in a rapid-fire series of exchanges seeking to end a conflict that is disrupting trade in goods from soybeans to medical equipment.

President Donald Trump expressed optimism last week, saying, "we’re getting very close."

The dispute erupted after Trump raised duties last year on Chinese imports in response to complaints Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology.

Liberal Jumps Up From Nightmare In Which Trump Exonerated, Avenatti Arrested, Green New Deal Shot Down
[Babylon Bee] PORTLAND, OR‐This morning, local liberal woman Meagan Porter jumped up from a terrible nightmare in which Trump was cleared of Russian collusion charges by Robert Mueller, Michael Avenatti was arrested for fraud and extortion, and the Green New Deal was overwhelmingly shot down in the Senate all in just a couple of days.

Porter stated the nightmare was "horrible" and one of her worst in years. "I have no idea where that came from," she said. "Can you imagine if that were real? Emanuel Now Dancing Around Issue Tells Smollett Prosecutors: Get Your Stories Straight
[Hot Air] Rahm Emanuel is angry, and prosecutors in Chicago won’t like Rahm when he’s angry. In fact, Emanuel’s so angry over the bizarre end to the Jussie Smollett hoax case that he kept talking over ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America earlier today. "What made them all of sudden say," Emanuel asked, "’You know what? On second thought, this is enough’?"

"Do you think it was a corrupt decision?" Stephanopoulos asked in return. Emanuel defers to ABC’s legal experts, but ... come on, man:

Dems Slam Pompeo as 'Abortion-Obsessed' Because of Popular Move to Stop Overseas Abortion Funding
[PJ] On Tuesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced new efforts to prevent American overseas funding from supporting abortion. While the Trump administration had already implemented what is called the "Mexico City Policy," this recent change makes that existing policy more effective. Democrats have slammed the Trump administration as "abortion-obsessed," but this policy is extremely popular, as are restrictions to late-term abortion.

"Your administration is abortion-obsessed," Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.) told Pompeo in a hearing on Wednesday. "You’re so obsessed with it that the side-effects are devastating the health and are going to continue to devastate the health of women around the world."

Many Democrats have indeed seized on abortion as a vital "women's health" issue, even though the vast majority of abortions are elective and have nothing to do with threats to a woman's health.

As for the Mexico City Policy, it merely involves cutting American funding to organizations that promote abortion overseas. The new expansion cuts funding to organizations that provide funding to such groups.

"We will refuse to provide assistance to groups who provide funding to other groups" that promote abortion, Pompeo said in an announcement at the State Department. "American taxpayer dollars will not be used to underwrite abortions," he added. "This is decent; this is right."

Mark Levin on Mueller: 'Barack Obama's government did all this'
[Washington Examiner] Conservative commentator Mark Levin lashed out against the Democrats in the aftermath of special counsel Robert Mueller submitting his final report to the Justice Department.

During his Fox News show Sunday, the nationally syndicated radio host blamed former President Barack Obama's government for seeding a Russian collusion frenzy and called for an investigation into their role in peddling the narrative.

"The Democratic Party is not a pro-America party. They act like a third-world party because they want to destroy this presidency," Levin said. "It is time to focus on the Democrats in the House. It is time to focus on the media, the Hillary campaign, the DNC, Barack Obama ‐ this was Barack Obama’s government that did all this when the Russians were interfering in our election."

"They put spies in [Trump's] campaign, they abused the FISA court system. This country doesn't belong to Adam Schiff, and [House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold] Nadler and [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi."

Following Attorney General Bill Barr's submitting a four-page letter to Congress summarizing Mueller's findings, including finding no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, Levin said Democrats owe Trump an apology for repeated allegations, including House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif. A growing number of Republicans have called on Schiff to step down from his role as chairman.

Dems and Muzzies in total butthurt over Pennsylvania legislator's opening prayer
[Daily Caller] Republican Pennsylvania State Rep. Stephanie Borowicz outraged Democrats by mentioning Jesus 13 times in her invocation on the day of Pennsylvania’s first female Muslim representative’s swearing-in.

Borowicz thanked Jesus, "the King of Kings; the Lord of lords; the great I Am; the One who’s coming back again; the One who came, died, and rose again on the third day," for the honor of being His ambassador, asked forgiveness on behalf of America for forgetting Him and for Him to heal the country, praised Him for President Donald Trump’s support of Israel and declared that "at the name of Jesus every knee will bow."

Democratic Pennsylvania State Rep. Movita Johnson-Harrell, the first female Muslim representative in the state’s legislature, decried the Monday prayer as offensive, as did state Democratic leadership.

Federal Prosecutor: Creepy Porn Lawyer Hasn't Filed A Tax Return Since 2010
The man who would become president.
[Daily Caller] Federal Prosecutor: Former Stormy Daniels attorney Michael Avenatti hasn’t filed an income tax return since 2010 and skipped out on payments in 2009 and 2010, according to federal prosecutors.

The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that Avenatti, now facing federal indictments in both New York and California, appears to have been living the life of luxury ‐ all while allegedly stiffing Uncle Sam on a regular basis.

In 2009, the IRS reports that Avenatti claimed some $1.9 million in personal income ‐ but never paid his tax bill, which amounted to $570,000. He allegedly repeated the same move in 2010, when he claimed $1.2 million in earnings but never paid the $282,000 he owed on that income.

Since 2010, the IRS reports that Avenatti did not file tax returns, either personal or for his law firm, Avenatti & Associates, in spite of bank deposits totaling $18 million and $38 million respectively.

Remoun Karlous, an IRS criminal investigator, wrote in his sworn statement that in that time, "Avenatti generated substantial income and lived lavishly."

#9  Sadly the IRS will take ten cents on the dollar since the bill is going to be huge with interest and penalties.

Extremely doubtful in a criminal / non-filer case. Setting that aside for a moment, the IRS is very reluctant to grant offers in compromise, because that would be done only when there's doubt as to the actual liability (not met here) or doubt as to collectability (which may be met here).

I'm going to a client today who lives on Cape Cod, and as part of her third offer in compromise (first two failed), I have to help put together a Form 433-B and a 433-A, which are used to judge one's inability to pay. It's a low six-figure amount, and I feel she would've been better off forking what she's paid in legal fees (at least $5,000 for each offer in compromise) and my fees in preparing these forms to the IRS, she'd be somewhat out of the woods by now. In Al Sharpton's case and Wesley Snipes' case), I'm certain offers in compromise were not successful. I fully expect the IRS to make an example out of this guy.

More than 30 killed in Guatemala after truck ploughs into a crowd
[Aljazeera] At least 30 people were killed and several others injured in western Guatemala after they were hit by an articulated truck, local authorities and President Jimmy Morales said.

A group of people had gathered on the dark road at the site of an earlier hit-and-run accident, which had killed one person, when the truck struck them.

The truck was apparently travelling without its headlights on. The driver did not stop.

"With regret, I'm saddened by the tragedy which happened in the municipality of Nahuala, Solola, which has left more than 30 people dead in a traffic accident," Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said in a tweet in Spanish.

What Will The Consequences Be Of Our Plummeting Birth Rate?
[The Federalist] The U.S. fertility rate recently dropped to a historic low. What are demographers saying about this downturn? Should humans stop procreating to fight climate change? Devin Nunes Sending Criminal Referral to DOJ over Spygate: ‘Time to Go on Offense'
[Breitbart] House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes (R-CA) is planning to send a criminal referral next week to the Justice Department that will detail "multiple referrals on a number of different crimes," including leaking classified information, as part of his investigation into misconduct at the Justice Department and the FBI.

"As of now, it’ll be one criminal referral but with multiple referrals on a number of different crimes," he told Breitbart News on Wednesday in an exclusive interview. "We will have some leakers in there for sure."

He said on the ending of the Special Counsel investigation, after it found the Trump campaign did not collude with Russia, "We knew this was a joke from the beginning, and I’ve said as much for a long time. Basically from the time our report came out, which has been a year. But now, the real work begins. It’s good to not have that sitting out there. But we have to now go on offense and track down all these dirty cops and bad players."

In addition, Nunes said he plans to interview about 50 people‐some who have never been called before Congress‐who were involved or know about the pushing of the "pee dossier" within various U.S. government agencies, and its use to get a surveillance warrant on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Nunes‐who took a beating from mainstream news outlets for challenging the Russian collusion narrative‐wants to get to the bottom of how it all began, which he said was long before the FBI claims they officially began their investigation of the Trump campaign in late July 2016.

Boko Haram attacks in eastern Niger leave 10 dead: Mayor
[AlAhram] Ten people were killed along with two jacket wallahs in a coordinated attack late Tuesday by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
jihadists on a town in eastern Niger, the local mayor said.

"Two exploding trollop female suicide bombers blew themselves up and button men then attacked civilians," the mayor of the town of N'Guigmi, Abba Kaya Issa, told AFP on Wednesday.

"We have a provisional toll of 10 dead plus the two suicide bombers," along with "seven or eight" maimed, he said, blaming "Boko Haram elements" for the assault.

"One of the suicide bombers blew herself up in the courtyard of a policeman's home, which is located inside the police barracks, and the second triggered her explosives belt between the town hall, the police barracks and the prefecture," he said, referring to the office of the state representative.

A local resident said several houses had been burned and maimed children in the police camp had been taken to the local hospital.

Another inhabitant said "armed Boko Haram" attacked the district of Dileram, "killing civilians and torching homes".

N'Guigmi lies in the north of the Diffa region, near Lake Chad, which has borne the brunt of cross-border infiltration by the Nigerian-based jihadists.

Eight people were killed last Thursday in the village of Karidi and 14 died in four attacks on Saturday. Fourteen soldiers have been killed since February 16.

The army says it killed "more than 200 terrorists" in the region at the end of last year, as well as 33 others on March 12.

Fresh clashes reported along Gaza border Wednesday evening after day of relative calm
Hamas’s Confusion Units came out to play again.
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian protesters are clashing with Israeli security forces along the border of the southern Gazoo Strip, according to reports in Israeli and Paleostinian media.

Reports says the so-called "night confusion units" are launching incendiary balloons towards Israel and hurling bombs at Israeli troops.

Residents of nearby Israeli communities report hearing sounds of kabooms.

The festivities come after a day of relative calm in and around Gazoo, as Egyptian mediators are meeting with top Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbung millipede, officials in a bid to negotiate a ceasefire deal with Israel.

‘Innocent Paramedic' Caught On Film Attacking IDF Soldiers During Riot - Watch

A Paleostinian paramedic was reportedly killed earlier Wednesday by IDF forces in a riot near Bethlehem.
It’s not clear to me if this is the paramedic Israel is accused of killing in Wednesday’s riot, or just to make it clear that Palestinian paramedics are no less inclined to violence and therefore no more innocent bystanders than non-paramedics.

After Golan criticism, Bennett says Israel will protect EU ‘even though you don’t deserve it’
[IsraelTimes] Education Minister Naftali Bennett responds to the EU condemnation of the US recognition of Israeli illusory sovereignty over the Golan Heights, telling the bloc of 28 nations "shame on you."

"The Golan Heights, and Jerusalem and the land of Israel has been the home of the Jewish people thousands of years before La Belle France was the home of the French and the UK the home of the British so we will continue building our amazing country," he says in a video posted on Twitter. "We’ll continue defending the free world from radical Islam even though you don’t deserve it."

In an earlier statement, EU member states unanimously rejected the US recognition of Israeli illusory sovereignty over the Golan, saying the shift in longstanding American foreign policy was not in keeping with international law.

Trump formally signed the proclamation alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, reversing more than a half-century of US policy in the Middle East. The US is the first country to recognize Israel’s illusory sovereignty over the Golan, which the rest of the international community regards as occupied territory.

14 Out Of 15 UNSC Member States Condemn Israeli Sovereignty On Golan: But no formal vote was taken. The US, which is one of five UNSC permanent members with veto power, would have thwarted any such action.

One could make the case that in France and Great Britain's cases, the locals would vote to remain with their "colonial" power, where that is probably not the case in the Golan Heights (I have my doubts, honestly, but one could argue that). But There is no way that Russia could honestly maintain a hold of all of its territory without its iron grip, nor China over Tibet without the same.

Italy says migrants hijacked rescue tanker off Libya, EU ends naval ops
[IsraelTimes] A tanker that picked up migrants colonists off Libya has changed course for Europe, Italia’s far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini says, accusing those rescued of having hijacked the vessel.

The Palau-flagged tanker Elhiblu I picked up the migrants colonists last night in waters where Libyan coastguards are responsible and then headed back to Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
But six nautical miles from port the ship suddenly changed course heading north, and is now halfway between Tripoli and Malta, according to Salvini.

"They’re not shipwrecked, they’re pirates!" Salvini tweets, promising that they would not be allowed to disembark in Italia.
That seems knd of pointless.
The Libyan authorities and the ship’s operator in Tripoli were not immediately available for comment.

EU Suspends Naval Missions in Libya Migrant Rescue Operation

[AnNahar] The EU on Wednesday suspended ship patrols that have rescued tens of thousands of migrants since 2015 in the Mediterranean and brought them to Italy, after deep resistance by populist-led Rome.

European Union diplomats agreed that the operation would be officially extended six months beyond its March 31 expiry date, but no longer deploy ships and instead rely on air missions and coordination with Libya.

"Member States have decided to extend the mandate of Operation Sophia for six months with a temporary suspension of its naval assets while Member States continue working on a solution related to disembarkation," an EU official said in a statement.

[FoxNews] Justice’s on the nation’s highest court reportedly sided unanimously with an Alaskan moose hunter on Tuesday, overturning the rulings of lower courts in his battle with the National Park Service (NPS).

"We reverse the decision below and wish [John] Sturgeon good hunting," Justice Elena Kagan said in reading a summary of the decision.

The Supreme Court’s ruling stemmed from a 2007 incident when Sturgeon, of Anchorage, Alaska, made use of a hovercraft while hunting moose along the state’s Nation River, which runs in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, The Associated Press reported.

But Sturgeon was reportedly notified by multiple Park Service rangers at the time that using the hovercraft was unlawful. The agency had banned hovercraft in other states.

In siding with Sturgeon, the Supreme Court said the agency was wrong in prohibiting the use of an amphibious vehicle on a river through a national preserve.

In their decision, Justices cited the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act that in 1980 set aside 162,500 square miles of land for preservation purposes, the outlet said. The law reportedly created 10 new national parks, preserves and monuments but said agency rules would not apply on state or private land within the conservation units that are not federally owned.

‘All options on the table’ if the Russian military doesn’t leave Venezuela: Trump

has warned that Russia must get out of Venezuela. Two planeloads of Russian troops are currently in the Latin American country under the terms of a 2001 cooperation treaty.

Speaking at the White House, Trump also warned that "all options are open" when it comes to getting Russia out of Venezuela.

Around 100 Russian troops touched down in Caracas on Saturday, a show of support for President Nicolas Maduro

’s government. The move caused consternation in Washington, however, with Vice President Mike Pence calling the deployment an "unnecessary provocation."

Pence also called on Russia to withdraw its support of Maduro and "stand with Juan Guaido," the Washington-sponsored opposition leader who declared himself interim president in January.

Trump met with Guaido’s wife, Fabiana Rosales, on Wednesday, and pledged his support to her husband. After the momentum behind his play for the presidency fizzled out, Guaido has continued to criticize Maduro’s government, on Tuesday accusing the Venezuelan supremo of violating the country’s constitution by welcoming the Russian troops.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, insisted that the deployment was carried out "in strict accordance with the constitution of that country and with full respect for its legal norms."

India-Pakistan
India’s dossier on Pulwama attack rejected
[DAWN] The Foreign Office on Wednesday formally conveyed to India the message that the initial information shared by that country regarding the alleged involvement of Pakistain-based elements in the Pulwama attack could not substantiate the imputation, and offered to examine any fresh proof ‐ whenever it is available.

"All information provided by India was checked and no link with the Pulwama attack could be established," a source told Dawn. "We remain ready to investigate and take action if there is any fresh evidence."

The findings were conveyed to the Indian high commissioner in Islamabad, Ajay Bisaria. "The Indian high commissioner in Islamabad was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the foreign secretary (Tehmina Janjua) and the findings on the Pulwama incident were shared with him," the FO said in a statement.

India had on Feb 27 given to Pakistain a dossier containing information in support of its allegation that the Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
(JeM), a group allegedly operating from Pak territory, was involved in the Feb 14 attack on a security convoy in India-held Kashmire’s district of Pulwama. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that it had provided Pakistain with "specific details of JeM complicity in the Pulwama terror attack and the presence of JeM terror camps and its leadership in Pakistain."

The source said the dossier contained few telephone numbers and WhatsApp IDs. "Our investigation could not link those numbers to the Pulwama attack," the source said, adding that the WhatsApp IDs had been sent to the US-based parent company, but no response had been received yet.

The dossier, Indian media had previously reported, contained information about JeM’s recruitment drives in the past two years, despite being listed by the Pakistain government as a terrorist group. The information was reportedly gleaned from open sources such as blogs, websites, Facebook and Twitter.

The source said that Pakistain remains committed to its offer of full cooperation and collaboration, but cannot punish anyone without evidence.

"Pakistain has acted with a high sense of responsibility and extended full cooperation," stated the FO release. "We do so in the interest of regional peace and security. We have sought further information / evidence from India to take the process forward."

After the Pulwama attack, Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who who convinced himself that playing cricket qualified him to lead a nuclear-armed nation with severe personality problems...
offered cooperation in the investigation if credible evidence were provided by India. The two sessions of the National Security Committee held while cross-border tensions were escalating had also reiterated the offer of cooperation.

Blasphemy case against seven ‘for burning holy pages’
[DAWN] Saddar police on Tuesday registered a blasphemy case against seven people, arresting one of them, after they were accused of burning pages of the Holy Koran at Hariher village, some six kilometres from here.

The case was lodged under Section 295-B of the Pakistain Penal Code against seven nominated suspects for allegedly burning the pages of the holy book near the village graveyard on Monday evening on the complaint of Muhammad Shakeel.

The locals tortured the suspects who were rescued and taken into custody by police.

District Police Officer Shahzad Asif, on being informed of the incident, involved the members of the district peace committee in the matter, who delivered speeches to calm down the enraged people and helped police in getting custody of the suspects from them.

According to the complainant, he was crossing the village graveyard along with two others -- Munir Ismail and Shabbir Sharif -- when he saw a fire on its other end.

He said they rushed to the spot and saw that the prime suspect was burning a large quantity of "holy pages". He said when they tried to stop the suspect, he snubbed them harshly.

The complainant said when they raised hue and cry, locals gathered there and started beating the suspect. He said the six others nominated in the FIR tried to rescue the prime suspect from the mob, saying he was burning the holy pages with their consent.

On being informed of the incident, the police arrived at the spot and tried to pacify the locals but the mob refused to handover the prime suspect to them.

Given the sensitivity of the situation, the DPO contacted some of the members of the district peace committee, including Maulana Shabbir Ahmed, and requested them to pacify the mob.

The Maulana, other members of the committee and coppers reached the spot and delivered speeches to convince the mob to handover the suspect to police. On being assured that justice would be done, the locals handed the prime suspect over to police.

According to a senior police official, who sought anonymity, the prime suspect belonged to a local religious family whose members have been collecting the wasted holy pages from the boxes they had installed at different places for their storage and disposing them of since long to avoid their desecration.

He said the whole episode might be a result of some misunderstanding and the police were probing it.

According to the DPO, the situation was "completely under control" and police were looking into the matter from various angles.

Letting the cat out of the bag
[ArsTechnica] An Alabama representative just let the cat out of the bag with the SLS rocket [SLS=Senate Launch System]

Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.) says these programs provide a lot of jobs.

On Wednesday, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine appeared before the United States Congress to talk about the president's budget request for fiscal year 2020. There, Bridenstine faced a slew of questions about the Space Launch System rocket, particularly from representatives whose states have a large number of jobs tied to the program.

The questions came a day after Vice President Mike Pence put the SLS rocket program on notice in regard to his desire to send humans to the lunar surface by 2024. "If our current contractors can't meet this objective, then we'll find ones that will," Pence said. During the House appropriations hearing, legislators from SLS states wanted to make sure NASA still plans to use the rocket for the agency's heavy-lift needs.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel says over 2,000 violent incidents originated in Gaza in past year
[IsraelTimes] Statistical review finds Paleostinians launched 1,233 rockets from the Strip, hurled 94 bombs and 600 Molotov cocktails across the border fence.

Israel said on Wednesday that more than 2,000 violent incidents have emanated from the Gazoo Strip since Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,-orchestrated weekly border demonstrations erupted a year ago.

A statistical review found that Paleostinians launched 1,233 rockets from Gazoo, hurled 94 bombs and 600 Molotov cocktails across the security fence and committed 152 acts of arson against Israeli forces.

The report said rocket fire killed one Israeli and injured 126. Paleostinian attacks on the security fence killed one Israeli soldier and maimed 16.

It said incendiary kites have torched thousands of acres of Israeli farmland, causing over $9.5 million in damage.

Israel has been accused internationally for using disproportionate force against unarmed protesters, but the military says troops only open fire after they come under attack and their lives are in danger. Over the past year, nearly 200 Paleostinians have been killed by Israeli fire. Hamas has claimed dozens of them as members.

There was a spike in tensions this week after a rocket fired from the Gazoo Strip hit a house in the agricultural community of Mishmeret in central Israel and destroyed it completely, wounding seven people. Israel responded with Arclight airstrikes on scores of targets in the Gazoo Strip.

Since Hamas wrested control of the Gazoo Strip from the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
’s Paleostinian Authority in a bloody 2007 coup, Israel has fought three campaigns against the Islamist terror group, which calls for Israel’s destruction.

Throughout the recent violence, Egyptian military intelligence officials have been working to broker a ceasefire. Israel is reportedly demanding an end to rocket fire and to all violence along the border, including the weekly riots along the Gazoo border fence and the launching of airborne incendiary and bombs into Israel.

On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces deployed two additional brigades to the Gazoo border region and called up approximately 1,000 reservists for air defense and other select units.

NY Times Long Ago Foretold Trump's Innocence
[Daily Wealth Alerts - but seems identical to a WaPo editorial behind the pay wall.]
On Oct. 31, 2016 ‐ one week before the presidential election ‐ the New York Times published an influential story under this headline: "Investigating Donald Trump, F.B.I. Sees No Clear Link to Russia." The story by Eric Lichtblau and Steven Lee Myers landed amid tremendous interest in Trump and the Russians. As a candidate, Trump had made conciliatory gestures toward Russian President Vladimir Putin. And a few weeks earlier, the Department of Homeland Security and Office of the Director of National Intelligence expressed confidence that "the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of emails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations," a clear reference to the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and other targets.
Conclusion, after a lot of soul searching and Trump-ain't-necessarily-completely-innocent-you know:
There is one takeaway, however, that further revelations won’t erode: In recent days, critics of the mainstream media have attacked its nonstop collusion chatter, with Hannity leading this particular chorus. Meanwhile, the New York Times ‐ as well-sourced as any U.S. news outlet on Trump-Russia reporting ‐ published an authoritative "no collusion" investigative story, and it did so one week before the presidential election. The editorial process that birthed this story, furthermore, was filled with agita and bitterness ‐ not about whether the story would help or hurt this candidate or that candidate, but whether it would withstand scrutiny. "Journalism is hard," says Foer.

India-Pakistan
Karachi violence
[DAWN] FOR the past four decades or so, Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
has experienced several waves of violence, with periods of uneasy calm in between.

Sometimes bloodshed has manifested itself in political killings, at other times ethnic violence has erupted, while the threat of sectarian trouble is always bubbling under the surface. Throw into this lethal mix the incidence of deadly street crime, and a picture of a metropolis constantly on edge emerges.

While the city has seen some semblance of peace since the 2013 law-enforcement operation, this calm is often shattered by violent incidents that remind both the state and citizens how fragile the situation in Karachi is. Just on Wednesday, a number of violent incidents took place in the city, including murders and break-ins. In one incident, a teenager was rubbed out upon resisting an attempt to rob a few thousand rupees.

Over the past few weeks, a number of high-profile attacks have taken place, including the targeting of religious scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani; a police guard and another individual accompanying the mufti were killed, and though police claim to have made headway in the case, no solid leads have emerged. Only a day after the attack on the mufti, Wajahat Hussain, a youth related to an MWM leader, was bumped off in Orangi Town.

From circumstantial evidence, it seems the same set of elements that had previously sown chaos in the city have become active again. However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
only a proper intelligence-based analysis can uncover the sources of instability.

It needs to be ascertained where the threats are primarily emanating from. Have sectarian killers and political assassins become active again, or does the threat lie elsewhere, for example in killers for hire? Are small-time Mister Big gangs taking advantage of the chaos in Karachi, or are foreign players meddling in the city’s peace?

The situation needs to be studied deeply by the law-enforcement and intelligence apparatus to break the latest cycle of violence. Moreover, one key reason for recurring bloodshed is the fact that Karachi is awash with guns. Other than lip service, over the years no government ‐ federal or provincial ‐ has considered a serious de-weaponisation drive for Karachi. That is why everyone from professional killers to street criminals is armed to the teeth, and able to take precious lives at will.

The authorities need to arrest the rising violent crime graph before bloodshed once more becomes routine in Karachi.

Rand Paul: 'Source' says John Brennan pushed discredited Steele dossier
[FOX] Citing a "high-level source," Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul charged in a bombshell Twitter post late Wednesday that anti-Trump ex-CIA Director John Brennan "insisted that the unverified and fake Steele dossier" be included in a classified intelligence community report on Russian interference in the 2016 elections -- a decision that ultimately lent credibility to the dossier and may have played a key role in fomenting unfounded fears of Russia collusion for two years.

Paul called on Brennan to testify under oath immediately, as Republicans continue to aggressively seek out the origins of the collusion narrative. Fox News had not independently verified Paul's source, and Brennan has not replied to Fox News' requests for comment.

Fox News is told Paul's tweet specifically accused Brennan of pushing to incorporate the dossier into the January 2017 official intelligence community assessment (ICA) from the FBI, CIA, and NSA that Russia worked to interfere in the 2016 election.

However, the dossier is not referenced in the unclassified summary of the ICA report that has been publicly released. Former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper previously testified that the dossier was not ultimately used in the ICA at all.

CNN reported on Jan. 12, 2017, based on anonymous sources, that intelligence officials briefed Trump on Jan. 6, 2017 with a "synopsis" of the contents of the dossier, which was written by ex-British spy Christopher Steele. Among the claims in the discredited dossier were that the Russian government had humiliating and compromising information concerning Trump.

It will likely one day be discovered that the Clinton Foundation was a money laundering Klingon cutout. These intelligence community bigwigs have their collective panties in a wad over something. My guess is it's the Clinton Foundation with it's global outreach and contacts.

Wiring the Klingon's into the Foundation was a brilliant stroke by the Clinton's. The ultimate 'insurance policy'. Weaponizing the IC and FBI, what an effective method for also monitoring the Trump and Sander's campaigns. Tossing in a little political misinformation (Trump-Russian collusion) would have been second nature.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian military says Israel is behind attack on Aleppo, several more sites targeted
[MOBILE.ALMASDARNEWS] At approximately 11:00 P.M. (local time) this evening, several Arclight airstrikes targeted the Syrian military’s positions at the outskirts of Aleppo city.

According to the Syrian military, the aerial division of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) was behind this evening’s airstrikes that saw many sites targeted in Aleppo.

Following an attack on the Sheikh Najjar District in eastern Aleppo, the Israeli Air Force began targeting sites around the Nayrab Airbase and Aleppo International Airport.

The Syrian military said they managed to down several of the hostile missiles; however, they did say a number of other projectiles did reach their intended targets at Sheikh Najjar, Nayrab, and the Aleppo Airport area.

If Israel is indeed behind this attack, this would be the second time in the last year that they have launched airstrikes on the Aleppo Governorate.

Last year’s attack by the Israeli Air Force caught the Syrian military by surprise, as the former’s F-35 jets went undetected from the Lebanese border to the Aleppo Governorate.
The Jerusalem Post adds:
Ten people died and the city of Aleppo in Syria is in chaos due to the Israeli strike, the Syrian Human Rights Center reported on Thursday, Maariv reported.

Early reports suggest that ammunition warehouse were struck, it is unclear at this point if Syrian air defenses were engaged or not.

Separate reports said kabooms rocked areas near Aleppo, including an air base and possible storage warehouse linked to Iran.

Explosions were reported in Sheikh Najjar industrial area, at Nayrab air base and in Aleppo.

Electrical outage was also reported and drone activity over Leb at the same time.

It appears that the Arclight airstrikes continued for almost forty minutes as new kabooms were reported just before midnight.

This included an alleged fourth kaboom near Nayrab air base.

Previous reports on social media indicate the presence of Iranian forces at Sheikh Najjar and Nayrab airbase, two of the sites where kabooms were reported Tuesday night.

A victim of redundancy. Photo imaging, coverage, and dynamic system re-tasking have greatly improved. Other unmanned, 'non-air breather' systems have replaced it.

Mueller and AG Barr Cleared the Way for Trump 2020
But the author is Senior Editor for the Washington Examiner.
[NBC News] The news that special counsel Robert Mueller found no proof that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia is much worse for Democrats than it appears. Because the vehicle for destroying President Donald Trump has crashed so spectacularly that Trump will reconstruct it into the campaign bus that will deliver him victoriously to the White House on his second Inauguration Day.

Trump’s opponents will try to characterize the report as a detail that can now be discarded as congressional committees and various local prosecutors race to produce damning information. But they’ve already bet on the wrong horse. The Mueller report will simply trample everything else, smashing and discrediting ‐ whether justifiably or not ‐ all other probes hurled Trump’s way.

Worse for Democrats, Trump, who tweets from the hip and produces all kinds of unreliable, errant missives, begins to look credible. "Witch hunt," he regularly exclaims at dawn from the White House residence. Now, that formulation, drilled into voters’ heads, begins to look like a potentially apt description of the opponents Trump has said are trying to thwart his agenda and unfairly delegitimize his election.

Meanwhile, the left-wing voices in Congress will spend the next few months demanding internal administration documents, hurling people before committees and heading to TV studios to proclaim that Trump is guilty of something or other.

They'd better be careful. They reached very far and grabbed hold of mostly air so far. They run the risk of being perceived by reasonable people as engaging in overreach.
I know some reasonable people who already think the Dems have overreached.
I'm betting that despite the risks, however, many Democrats won't be able to help themselves. The Democratic base smelled blood and still wants it. And these are the people whose small-dollar donations are fueling the Democratic presidential hopefuls, and whose votes in the primaries will choose the nominee. But they are not the people who will put a Democrat over the top in a general election.

The Mueller report has likely ensured it's going to be a very cold January 2021 for the Democratic Party.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran looks to remote port to beat US sanctions
[Rudaw] With the web of US sanctions tightening, Iran faces a host of challenges as it looks to an isolated port in the country’s far southeast to maintain the flow of goods.

The port in Chabahar, only about 100 kilometres (62 miles) from the Pakistain border and located on the Indian Ocean, is Iran’s largest outside the Gulf. It is also the only Iranian port with exemptions from unilateral economic sanctions reimposed by the United States in 2018.

That is due mainly to the pivotal role of the port, and a planned railway line, in breaking landlocked Afghanistan’s dependence on Pakistain for trade with the world, especially India. Afghan trade as well as plans for a trading route by rail between central Asia and the Indian Ocean called the North-South Corridor are the main reasons the Islamic republic has invested one billion dollars in Chabahar’s Shahid Beheshti port, official sources say.

"We will keep on developing this port... our rail network, road network and airport are all being developed, so that we can implement the North-South Corridor," Roads and Urban Development Minister Mohammad Eslami told AFP while visiting Chabahar for a development conference.

‘TRAFFIC WILL PICK UP’
More than 200 hectares (almost 500 acres) of land have been reclaimed from the sea for the project and over 17.5 million cubic metres (618 million cubic feet) dredged, creating a 16.5-metre (54-foot) draught.

But more than a year since the new installations became operational in December 2017, business has yet to pick up. The ships that officials say have docked in the past year have only loaded and unloaded 2.1 million tonnes of cargo, a far cry from the port’s annual capacity of 8.5 million tonnes. Only 20 ships have docked at the new section of the port and most of its three kilometres of waterfront remains unutilised, with new machinery and neatly lined-up cranes standing idle.

But authorities remain upbeat about the prospects for growth.

Hossein Shahdadi of the provincial ports and maritime authority said that in the first 11 months of the past Iranian year, which started on March 21, 2018, "there has been a 56 percent increase in cargo handled at the port compared with the previous year".

"We’ve also had a 25 percent rise in the number of ships calling at the port" on the Gulf of Oman, he said.

Arun Kumar Gupta, managing director of India Ports Global Limited which has a 10-year concession at the new port, played down the startup issues.

"Any port will have a gestation period, there will be lulls but we are very sure that traffic will pick up," Gupta told AFP.

‘BORN WITH SANCTIONS’
The Indian company began work in December and has so far handled only an average of 60,000 tonnes of cargo per month. But Gupta is counting on the port’s proximity to India and Afghanistan to attract business.

Chabahar’s location, however, carries its own risks as it lies in the volatile Sistan Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
province where Death Eater jihadists operate.

In December, a suicide kaboom on the local police headquarters killed two coppers.

During an investment conference in February, security was tight with many roads cut off and hundreds of armed security personnel deployed to protect delegates.

Apart from security concerns, US sanctions banning financial transactions with Iran make it ever harder to pay or receive payments. Some like Afsaneh Rabiani, who runs a freight forwarding company, see Chabahar as an opportunity for "those willing to take the risk".

"I’ve been researching Chabahar for the past year and a half, and the infrastructure is now in place to do serious work here," she said.

As for the sanctions, Iran’s roads minister said the challenge was nothing new.

"We were born with sanctions. Ever since the (1979 Islamic) revolution, we have been under sanctions and we are working on how to counter them," Eslami said, as he oversaw the unloading of a first shipment of Afghan goods lined up to be re-exported from Chabahar.

Microsoft: Seizure of sites Iranian hackers used for attacks
[Ynet] Microsoft says it has seized 99 websites used by Iranian hackers to launch cyberattacks.

The company said Wednesday it took control of the websites after suing the hacking group and obtaining a U.S. judge's approval.

Microsoft says it's been tracking the group since 2013. The company says the group has tried to steal sensitive information from activists, journalists and others in the Middle East.

Microsoft calls the group Phosphorus, while others call it APT35.
According to the Times of Israel, still others call it Charming Kitten.
Wednesday's announcement ties the hackers to the country of Iran but not specifically to its government.

India-Pakistan
Religious minorities want basic rights granted
[DAWN] Representatives and activists from religious minorities expressed disappointment over the state of law and order nationwide, as crimes against their communities continued unabated.
They're not considered "Pakistanis" in the Land of the Pure. They're members of the Moslem majority or they're untermenschen Hindoos, Christians, Ahmadis, Sikhs or whatever.
Speaking to Dawn, several minority members complained that they were denied their basic rights and many of the laws regarding freedom and safety were not being fully implemented.

"It is ironic that while the Lahore Resolution advocated safeguards for minorities and the protection of their religious, cultural, economic, political and other rights, in the past few days we have been hearing of a new wave of forced conversions in Sindh and south Punjab," said Samuel Payara, chairperson of Implementation Minority Rights Forum, which earlier held a presser also in this regard.

"Only a few days ago, we saw the heart-rending video of a Christian woman who was crying and begging for help and safety ─ she had been paraded naked by some men," he said.

Payara has in the past filed several petitions in court, including demands for compensation for the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
and Quetta church blast victims.

Hindu community activist Amarnath Randhawa said the issue of forced conversions was rising once again.

"Young girls from the Hindu community are being kidnapped and raped, and at gunpoint married off to Moslem boys even though some of them are already married," he said. "Even the Sikh community is not safe, as recently in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa a married young Sikh woman was kidnapped."

Randhawa also mentioned the case of the Christian woman ‐ a mother of three ‐ who was allegedly kidnapped from Islamabad and forcibly converted and married to a Moslem man.

Another Hindu community representative alleged that a couple of girls had been kidnapped from south Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

a couple of days ago. He said that a few years ago the Sindh government had withdrawn a bill aimed at protecting Hindus, in particular, from forced conversions despite the fact that it was passed by the provincial assembly.

The Criminal Law (Protection of Minorities) Bill 2016, presented by then MPA Nand Kumar, mentioned that children under 18 years of age would not be allowed for marriage, however underage Hindu girls were still being kidnapped and forcibly converted.

Payara further said: "On Nov 15, 2018, a decision was made by the former chief justice of Supreme Court that the chairperson of the Evacuee Trust Property Board must belong to the minority community. However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
in spite of these orders, no names from the minority community have been sent to the cabinet for approval."

He also said that most importantly a National Commission of Minorities was needed. He stressed that their demands included immediate action by the prime minister for passing of the Criminal Law (Protection of Minorities) Bill, the Minorities Affairs Ministry be initiated again and this time be headed by a member of the minority community and all Supreme Court orders and directives be implemented.

China-Japan-Koreas
Military options for denuclearizing North Korea
[WASHINGTONTIMES] After North Korea’s H-Bomb test in September 2017, some analysts, myself included, urged the White House to consider possible military options, using conventional surgical strikes to denuclearize North Korea quickly, while minimizing escalatory risks.

Decades of failed talks, and the failed Hanoi nuclear summit proves again, North Korea will not denuclearize peacefully.

Dictator Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
’s game is to buy time through pretend negotiations to build enough ICBMs so nuclear-armed North Korea, with a Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) relationship with the United States, becomes irreversible.

Economic sanctions designed to pressure North Korea’s denuclearization peacefully never worked, and are not working now. According to a recent United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
report obtained by the News Agency that Dare Not be Named, leaked in the UK Guardian (March 11, 2019):

"United Nations experts are investigating possible violations of UN sanctions on North Korea in about 20 countries, from alleged clandestine nuclear procurement in China to arms brokering in Syria and military cooperation with Iran, Libya and Sudan. The expert panel’s 66-page report to the security council also detailed the appearance in North Korea of a Rolls-Royce Phantom, Mercedes-Benz limousines and Lexus LX 570 all-wheel-drives in violation of a ban on luxury goods. And it noted a trend in North Korea’s evasion of financial sanctions by using cyberattacks to ’illegally force the transfer of funds from financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges.’"

Moreover, according to the UN report: "North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs remained intact and its leaders were dispersing missile assembly and testing facilities to prevent ’decapitation’ strikes."

Biden Attacks America’s ‘white Man’s Culture’
[NEWS.GRABIEN] ormer vice president and likely 2020 presidential candidate, Joe Biden, attacked the United States’ “white man’s culture,” during an appearance at the Biden Courage Awards, which honors those working to combat sexual assault on college campuses.
Actually, white man's culture sez sexual assault is a big no-no. You know, chivalry and all that sort of nonsense. Non-white cultures have mostly treated women as property. Some, like Hindoo culture, had pleasant practices like suttee, where the woman was expected to climb onto her husband's funeral pyre.
That’s because the way the conquering Moghuls treated Hindoo widows was much worse than merely burning to death. Sometimes all the choices are bad.
Biden said America’s racist culture is why Anita Hill wasn’t able to stop Clarence Thomas’ nomination to the Supreme Court.
Could it have been possible that she was a liar?
“A really notable woman, Anita Hill, professor, showed the courage of a lifetime talking about her experience being harassed by Clarence Thomas,” Biden said at the New York City banquet. “We knew a lot less about the extent of harassment back then, over 30 years ago. But she paid a terrible price. She was abused through the hearing. She was taken advantage of. Her reputation was attacked.”
They tried to do the same thing with Justice Kavanaugh, possibly the cleanest man in the U.S.A. And Clarence Thomas remains a really notable man, who’s been paying a terrible price, living with hearsay as evidence against his reputation.
“I wish I could have done something,” he continued. “I opposed Clarence Thomas nomination. I voted against him. But I also realized there was a real and perceived problem the committee faced.”
Joe's got a real and perceived problem with putting his hands on every woman in sight. Maybe he's just hard of seeing and he's acquainting himself by braille.
Biden squarely blamed white people for Clarence Thomas being believed over Anita Hill.
"Dat's what white people do!"... But wait! Joe's white. Wouldn't he do the same thing? I'm so confused.
“They were a bunch of white guys,” he said. “No, I mean it sincerely, a bunch of white guys hearing this testimony in the Senate Judiciary Committee. So when Anita Hill, when Anita Hill came to testify, she faced a committee that didn’t fully understand what the hell is all about. To this day I regret I couldn’t come up with a way to get a kind of hearing she deserved, given the courage she showed by reaching out to us. The hearing she deserved was a hearing where she was respected, where the tone and the questioning was not hostile and as sullied, where the fact that she stepped forward was recognized as an act of courage in and of itself. Because let’s face it, back in 1991 it took a lot of courage to take on a man who was so much a part of the establishment and the power structure.”
He was a powerful black man, y'see. They're just the same as white men, only they're black. Joe's got his pander up, by gum!
Biden traced the episode back to English common law in the 1300s, which he said enabled spousal abuse.
In India, they were much more enlightened. Under the Laws of Manu, the primary pre-colonial Indian jurisprudence (other than the Koran), the only apparent time that a woman obtains any real power is when she becomes the senior married woman in a household. Even this status has its limits. According to the Manusmrti the wife must still obey her male relatives, which in this case would mean chiefly her husband. So what would woman do when her husband died? If a Hindu woman was lucky she would have other male relatives who would care for her, in particular her sons.
“You all know what the phrase rule of thumb means? Where it’s derived from?” Biden asked. “In English common law, not codification or common law, back in the late 1300s, so many women were dying at the hands of her husbands because they were chattel, just like the cattle or the sheep, that the Court of Common Law decided they had to do something about the extent of the deaths. So, you know what they said? No man has a right to chastise his woman with a rod thicker than the circumference of his thumb. This is English jurisprudential culture, a white man’s culture. That’s got to change it’s got to change.”
That's what we call a "folk etymology." Blackstone makes no mention of the "rule of thumb," and the way it's used doesn't appear to go with the supposed definition. The exact phrase rule of thumb first became associated with domestic abuse in the 1970s, after which the spurious legal definition was cited as factual in a number of law journals. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights published a report on domestic abuse titled "Under the Rule of Thumb" in 1982. Maybe they were just thinking about the numerous fatwahs allowing wife beating as long as the stick is no bigger than an inch around.

Husband and employees allegedly strip woman naked, beat her over refusal to dance for them
[DAWN] Police tossed in the clink
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
two men in Lahore on Wednesday for their alleged torture of one suspect's wife over her refusal to dance for them.
Little ethnic difference thing here. I never allow other men to torture my wife, a job I accomplish with practiced ease, a hot poker, a jury-rigged iron maiden, and an old pair of knuckle dusters that's been in my family for hundreds of years. We also try to keep our clothes on, so as not to scare animals.
According to a first information report registered on March 26, Asma Aziz's husband of four years and two of his employees tortured her over her refusal to dance for them. The Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

police in statement said the incident had taken place in the city's Defence Housing Authority area.

Asma, in a video circulating on social media, claimed that her husband had "always hit her a lot".

This time, she alleged, "He took my clothes off in front of his employees. The employees held me as he shaved my hair off and burned it. My clothes were bloody. I was bound by a pipe and hung from the fan. He threatened to hang me naked."

She said that when she went to the Kahna cop shoppe to register a complaint, "they asked me for money". She added that the police had, instead of providing her the FIR number or conducting a medical examination, asked her for money.

Superintendent Model Town Muhammd Ali Wasim took notice of Asma's allegations of police officials' involvement in trying to extort money from her. He asked the DSP Model Town to provide him a report after looking into the allegations.

She said that when she went to the Kahna cop shoppe to register a complaint, "they asked me for money".
She appealed to people for help, claiming that both her parents were dead and she had no place to go or food to eat.

In-charge Investigation at Kahna cop shoppe, Saleem Shaukat, told DawnNewsTV today that two of the suspects ─ the husband and one of his employees ─ had been arrested.

Punjab Inspector General of Police Amjad Javed Saleemi took notice of the incident and ordered a thorough investigation, directing DIG Investigation Dr Inam Waheed to personally investigate the matter and to make sure that the perpetrators of the attack are punished severely under the law.

After the news was reported, Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari tweeted that she had taken notice and looked into the case. "My office was informed by station house officer of cop shoppe Kahna, Lahore: Police has registered FIR and arrested both accused and booked under sections 337(v) and 506. Man who raped his two nieces sentenced to death by court in Rawalpindi
[DAWN] A sessions court in Rawalpindi on Wednesday sentenced a young man to death for subjecting his two minor nieces to rape and sexual abuse over the course of several months.

The convict, Iftikhar Ali, the brother of Pashto singer Nazia Iqbal, was tossed in the calaboose
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
in April last year over allegations he had sexually assaulted two of his sister's minor daughters.

After evidence and testimonies recorded proved the crime, Additional District and Sessions Judge Tahir Alam sentenced Ali to death and also imposed a fine of Rs0.6 million on him.

After his arrest, a case was registered against the convict under Section 376 (punishment of rape) and Section 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC) at the Rawat cop shoppe.

Police had said at the time that the convict, who was then 19 years old, was reportedly caught red-handed by Iqbal while sexually abusing her daughter at her residence in Bahria Town, Rawalpindi.

In her statement before the police, the singer had stated that she was a mother of two sons and two daughters. The girls were 12 and eight years of age (at the time of the incident). Due to professional commitments, both she and her husband would mostly be away from home due to which she had called over her brother from Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
to look after the girls and ensure the safety of the home.

Iqbal had revealed that her daughters "would often complain to her that their uncle indulged in 'wrong acts' with them and would show them scary movies, threatening to kill them if they told anyone".

"One Sunday morning when I got up to prepare breakfast, I heard the cries of my younger daughter coming from the adjacent room. Upon entering the room, I discovered that her clothes had been taken off and my brother was sexually abusing her," she told police in April 2018.

Upon seeing this, she had immediately cried out in alarm following which the convict expeditiously departed at a goodly pace. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

Then-station house officer Rawat Inspector Sheikh Khizr Hayat had said that Ali had confessed that he was unemployed and mostly remained at home and would often indulge in immoral acts with his nieces.

Japan says it won’t develop ‘killer robots’
[NYPOST] Japan’s ambassador to the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
-backed Conference on Disarmament says his country has not developed fully autonomous weapons systems and has no plans to do so.

Nobushige Takamizawa spoke at Monday’s opening of the latest weeklong meeting of government experts in Geneva on the future of "Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems," also known as "Killer Robots."

Takamizawa’s comments have been widely anticipated in Japan, a country with highly sophisticated technological know-how and concerns about regional security threats ‐ notably North Korea, which in recent years has tested missiles by firing them over Japanese territory.

He mentioned "positive effects" of autonomous weapons systems under human oversight, such as saving labor and reducing collateral damage.

Opponents of fully automated systems fear that machines could one day conduct wars without human control.

Bangladesh mother has twins one month after first birth
[DAWN] A Bangladeshi mother has stunned doctors by giving birth to healthy twins 26 days after a first child was born prematurely.
Translation: she had triplets, with one born separately from — and earlier than — his siblings.
Arifa Sultana, 20, gave birth to a baby boy last month through normal delivery, but doctors missed the presence of a second uterus.

"She didn't realise she was still pregnant with the twins. Her waters broke again 26 days after the first baby was born and she rushed to us," Sheila Poddar, a gynaecologist who treated the woman, told AFP.

Podder carried out an emergency caesarean section to deliver the twins ‐ one boy and one girl ‐ last Friday.

The young woman from Jessore district in southwest Bangladesh was allowed to go home with her three healthy babies on Tuesday. Podder said there were no complications.

"I haven't seen any case like this in my 30-year plus medical career," Dilip Roy, chief government doctor in Jessore, told AFP.

Roy questioned the actions of Khulna Medical College Hospital doctors for not detecting the second pregnancy.

Hailing from a poor family, Sultana said she was happy with the three children but felt concerned how she would bring them up.

She told AFP her husband earns barely 6,000 taka ($70) a month as a labourer.

"I don't know how we will manage such a huge responsibility with this little amount."

Her husband Sumon Biswas put on a brave face.

"It was a miracle from [God] that all of my children are healthy. I will try my best to keep them happy," he said.

Florida man sucker punches public defender during court hearing
[NYPOST] A man facing a battery charge in Florida didn’t do himself any favors Wednesday when he slugged a public defender in the head during a court appearance.

William Green got out of his seat at the Broward County bond court, approached the lawyer ‐ who was looking down at papers ‐ and delivered the haymaker, which knocked her to the floor.

The sudden attack left everyone in the room in shock, video posted by WPLG shows.

A defendant who was at the podium ran out of the way as corrections officers tackled Green.

Judge Jackie Powell asked the stunned attorney if she was all right before calling a recess.

A front man for the Broward County public defender’s office said the lawyer was taken to Broward Health Medical Center.

According to court records, Green, 27, was locked away

(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) has kidnapped several Syrian Arab Army (SAA) soldiers in eastern this week, a source in Damascus told al-Masdar on Wednesday.

According to the source, more than ten Syrian Arab Army soldiers were kidnapped this week while traveling along the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor Highway.

The soldiers were reportedly ambushed by the terrorist group and taken to an unknown destination in the vast desert region of eastern Homs.

At the same time, another three Syrian Arab Army soldiers were killed this week after their vehicle struck a landmine at the town of al-Ghabra in eastern Deir Ezzor.

The landmine that killed the Syrian Arab Army soldiers was planted by the Islamic State fighters that were fleeing the town last year.

ISIS resurfaces in Syria’s Idlib province amid defeat in eastern Euphrates region
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) has been wreaking havoc on the rebel-held areas of the Idlib Governorate recently, targeting several sites belonging to their jihadist rivals from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham

Using their vast network of sleeper cells, the Islamic State has repeatedly carried out attacks against Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham fighters inside and outside of Idlib city.

As a result of these Islamic State attacks, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham has once again restarted their security operations in order to eliminate these sleeper cells from the Idlib Governorate.

However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
this task is proving to be incredibly difficult for Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, despite some success in identifying and destroying these cells.

Just last week, the Islamic State managed to conduct two terrorist attacks inside Idlib city; this prompted Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham to raise their alert levels around the bustling provincial capital and begin search-and-destroy operations across the area.

While it is unlikely that the Islamic State can capture and hold any significant portion of the Idlib Governorate at this time, they could later carve out a mini pocket in the coming months as they take advantage of the ongoing hostilities between the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and rebel forces near the demilitarized zone.

A Night On The Gaza Border, Waiting For Another War
[JPOST] The concern is always there that the next round will come.
Get it over with, fergawdsake! Yer gonna have to do it eventually.

More immediately, Israel and Hamas prepare to square off on anniversary of ‘March of Return’

[IsraelTimes] Haniyeh called on "our Paleostinian people in Gazoo, the occupied West Bank, and abroad to participate in Land Day (March 30) and take part in the million-man march."

Paleostinian Land Day marks a 1976 decision by the Israeli government to seize thousands of dunams of Arab-owned land in the Galilee region of northern Israel.

Last year on Land Day, Paleostinians in the Gazoo Strip launched the "Great March of Return," a series of weekly protests and riots along the security fence. Israel maintains that Hamas appropriated the campaign for nefarious purposes, using the civilian protesters as cover for violent military activities.

The Israeli military is concerned that the one-year anniversary of the first March of Return on Saturday will bring tens of thousands of rioters to the Gazoo border threatening to breach the security fence and enter Israeli territory en masse.

China-Japan-Koreas
Pompeo: N. Korea yet to make 'big move' toward denuclearization
[EN.YNA.CO.KR] U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that North Korea has yet to make the "big move" toward dismantling its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

The top U.S. diplomat was asked at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing whether the North's weapons of mass destruction capabilities have increased or decreased since the first summit between President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
in June.

Pompeo responded that Pyongyang's suspension of nuclear and missile tests since late 2017 is a "good thing" as it reduces capability.

But the North, he said, has not taken the "big step" toward denuclearization since negotiations began a year ago.

"We have not yet seen them make the big move that we were frankly hoping that they would do in Hanoi," Pompeo said, referring to Trump and Kim's second summit last month, which collapsed without a deal.

Hamas has developed a vast arsenal in blockaded Gaza
[Ynet] Despite Israeli efforts, Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", has acquired an impressive array of weapons including Qassam rockets, homemade R-160 (km range), Iranian Fajr-5 rockets, drones, mortars and attack tunnels.

The rocket fired from the Gazoo Strip on Monday was one of the most powerful launched ever by Gazoo murderous Moslems, flying nearly 120 kilometers (70 miles) before it slammed into a house in central Israel, wounding seven people.

Over more than a decade, the Islamic murderous Moslem Hamas group has built up a large arsenal of rockets and missiles. It started with crude short-range projectiles and now possesses rockets that can strike virtually anywhere in Israel.

#3  So expect secondary and tertiary explosions?

Quaternary explosions if you include heads at the UN.

Hamas has painted themselves into a bit of a corner. For years, they made a living annoying the Juice, causing enough mayhem to earn resistance points but not enough to bring the wrath of the IDF down on their heads once and for all. Now, thanks to the deep pockets of their sponsors, they have all sorts of up-gunned weapons like long-range missiles and such. No more launching bottle rockets off a rail propped up on cinder blocks!

The problem is all this new kit can do some real damage AND Hamas's sponsors expect some return on their investment. Throw in Hamas supporters, always a frothy bunch, clamoring for action and you have a recipe for an actual war.

Accused ‘granny-kicker’s’ co-workers set him up for arrest
[NYPOST] Staffers at the highly acclaimed restaurant Frenchette knew they had the accused subway kicker in their midst — they just had to figure out how to keep him ’til cops arrived.
Obviously everybody liked him. Nobody could believe he dunnit.
Suspect Marc Gomez — who was caught on shocking video stomping an elderly female straphanger in the head on a Bronx train March 10 — worked as a dishwasher at the posh Tribeca eatery.
But he had his mind on bigger things. Like Sing Sing.
So after Gomez’s coworkers recognized him in the video footage released by cops Friday, someone at the restaurant “called the police immediately and gave them his name and address,’’ a Frenchette source told The Post on Monday.
"Hello?... Is dis da cops?... Lissen, dis is Mahmoud da Weasel..."
“We wanted to make sure we did everything the right way and he was picked up as quickly as possible,’’ said the source at the eatery, which was named a 2019 James Beard Award best-new-restaurant finalist.
"Thanks, Mahmoud! We owe ya one!"
“We thought the police would pick him up at home on Friday, but they couldn’t find him at his address, so detectives came to the restaurant on Saturday just after 9 a.m. to get him at work.”
"Open up in dere! Dis is da po-lice!"
"This is a restaurant. We're already open."
"Oh."

The source said that as employees waited for the cops to arrive, they were careful to play it cool with the unsuspecting Gomez.
"What're youse guys lookin' at?"
"Nothing, Gomez!"

“There were not many staff in the kitchen at that time, he was one of the first there, and we made sure not to spook him,’’ the source said.
"We replaced the bullets in his gun with unshelled peanuts!"

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says Jussie Smollett got special treatment
[PAGESIX] Jussie Smollett received preferential treatment from Windy City prosecutors because he’s "a person of influence," reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown

Mayor Rahm Emanuel railed on Wednesday.

Emanuel continued his onslaught of criticism of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for their abrupt decision to dismiss the hoax hate crime case against the "Empire" star, dropping all 16 felony charges against him.

"This looks like because he’s an actor, a person of influence, he got treated differently than anybody else," the mayor said on ABC’s "Good Morning America."

Emanuel, however, stopped short of calling for an investigation into prosecutors for the sweetheart deal that he blasted as a "whitewash of justice" on Tuesday.

"You have the state’s attorney’s office saying he’s not exonerated, he actually did commit this hoax. He’s saying he’s innocent and his words are true ‐ they better get their stories straight," said Emanuel.

FATF affiliate not happy with steps to block banned groups funding
[DAWN] A delegation of the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) on money laundering, a regional affiliate of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), has expressed serious reservations over insufficient physical actions on ground against proscribed organizations (POs) to block flow of funds and activities and is likely to issue a formal warning before its departure on Thursday (today).

"The crux of first two days of interactions is that they (APG) consider us very good on paper ‐ legislation, regulation, data collection and notifications ‐ mostly involving the federal government, but highly non-performing at provincial and district levels where such POs and non-profit organizations (NPOs) actually operate," a bigwig told Dawn.

JWST absorbs all money and can't deliver
[SpaceNews] As NASA commits to performing another cost and schedule estimate for the James Webb Space Telescope, the chairman of an independent review board said he’s concerned about its ability to remain on track for a launch in two years.

Speaking at a meeting of the Committee of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the National Academies’ Space Science Week event here March 26, Tom Young, who chaired the Independent Review Board chartered by NASA last year to review cost and schedule problems with JWST, said that since the agency revised the schedule of the mission last June work on the space telescope appeared be taking longer than expected.

“We went back and took a look at schedule performance as a part of our assessment,” he said. “One thing really did catch our attention and that was, in our judgement, that the consumption of margin at the time we looked at that was significantly higher than we would have expected.”

Young said the board didn’t do a formal analysis of the current target launch date of end of March 2021 but rather “some back-of-the-envelope looks” at the schedule for the remaining two years before launch. “It suggested to us there was cause for concern,” he said. “Reserved had been consumed at a pretty high rate and the impact of that should really be better understood and analyzed.”
