The wife of Orlando terrorist Omar Mateen was right by his side as he bought ammunition, and even drove him once to the Pulse nightclub — but tried talking him out of an attack there, according to a new report.
Officials told NBC News Noor Zahi Salman, Mateen’s second wife, might face criminal charges for failing to tell authorities what she knew before the Sunday attack. Salman said she was with Mateen as he bought ammo and a holster. She also took him to Pulse at least once to scope it out, according to NBC. But Salman said she tried talking her husband out of a violent attack.

Mateen was seen at Pulse, as well the Disney Springs entertainment complex, earlier this month, CNN reported. The day before the Orlando attack, he was reportedly seen at Disney Springs for several hours, alone.
Salman was spotted Tuesday for the first time since the massacre — shielding her face from news cameras as she left the Florida home she once shared with the madman. She left the home shortly after midnight, with a small group of people and police officers. A WSVN reporter captured Salman pulling a white hood over her face as she stepped into the backseat of a car, apparently with the couple’s son. The reporter said the home had been burglarized,

and Salman came to collect her belongings.
Few details are known about Salman and her marriage to the budding terrorist. Public records say Salman, 30, lived in a Chicago suburb before moving into Mateen’s Fort Pierce home in 2012, and then buying a house with him in Port Saint Lucie the next year.
But in December 2015, she apparently moved across the country to live with her family in Rodeo, Calif., records show.
Salman grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and attended Heald College-Concord, a local school that is now defunct.
But after she married Mateen, he kept her from coming back home.
“Her mother would always complain that the husband did not let her visit the family,” a neighbor, Sarwar Kaur, told the San Jose Mercury News.
He said he only saw Salman return once, after the death of her father.
Salman’s family seemed to keep to themselves.
He was a quiet man...
“We never really know who lives next door to us,” neighbor Glauber Franchi said.
Mateen’s father, Seddique Mateen, claimed Salman and the couple’s son were with Mateen only a few months ago — when he became enraged by seeing gay men in Miami kissing in front of his family. The father said the incident may have made Mateen snap, eventually leading to him murdering 49 people at Orlando’s Pulse gay nightclub.
Apparently that is a lie, according to news reports from other people who knew the man...
But some Pulse regulars have said Mateen was spotted in the club several times in recent years, and chatted with gay men through dating apps like Grindr.
Grindr declined comment about the reports, citing ongoing investigations.

[WAPO] It was her favorite place to be -- the beach. And on Wednesday, Lottie Michelle Belk was at Virginia Beach, celebrating her birthday and a marriage anniversary when a rare, tragic accident happened.
A big gust of wind lifted a beach umbrella out of the sand, blew it down, and struck Belk in the torso. She later died at a Virginia Beach hospital.
The incident unfolded about 5 p.m. near 33rd Street. Belk, 55, of Chester, Va., was at the beach with her family, according to several media reports. Life is short. Death is certain.

The diplomats advised visa liberalization to prevent Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from derailing the landmark EU-Turkey migrant deal, according to five leaked diplomatic cables seen by The Sunday Times exclusively.
In a telegram to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), Janet Douglas, the deputy head of mission in Ankara wrote: "Should [EU] visa liberalization be granted, we will need to develop our own lines on the UK’s stance to visa-free travel for Turks."
"One option would be to assess again the possibility of visa travel for Turkish special passport holders, which would be a risk, but a significant and symbolic gesture to Turkey," Douglas said.
Special passports were issued for up to 1.5 million Turkish government officials, civil servants, teachers and their families who were able to travel to the UK without a visa until 2009, according to the newspaper.

The ex-wife of Orlando mass killer Omar Mateen claimed Monday that she believed he was homosexual — as it was revealed that he frequented the gay nightclub where he staged the nation’s worst massacre in modern times.
Sitora Yusufiy, who was married to Mateen in 2009 for three months, made the shocking claim on Brazilian television station SBT Brazil.
Her fiancé, Marco Dias, speaking in Portuguese on her behalf, said that Yusufiy believed that Mateen had “gay tendencies” and that his father had called him gay in front of her. Dias also claimed “the FBI asked her not to tell this to the American media.”
That is a much more interesting claim than Mateen's orientation...
The bombshell came as a male former classmate of Omar Mateen said he had been asked out romantically by the mass killer, who reportedly was a virtual regular at the Pulse nightclub, having visited it more than a dozen times over the years. The former classmate said he would hang out with Mateen, hitting gay bars after attending class at Indian River Community College police academy in 2006 — and one time Mateen asked him out “romantically,” according to the Palm Beach Post.
“We went to a few gay bars with him, and I was not out at the time, so I declined his offer,” the former classmate told the paper.
The classmate told the paper he thought the killer, who pledged allegiance to ISIS before killing 49 at the Pulse gay nightclub, was gay and in the closet.
The classmate’s claims came after reports emerged that Mateen frequented the club for years before Sunday’s massacre.
“It’s the same guy,” Chris Callen, a drag queen who performs under the name Kristina McLaughlin, told the Canadian Press. “He’s been going to this bar for at least three years.”
Callen’s husband, Ty Smith, recalled seeing Mateen being escorted drunk from the club.
“Sometimes he . . . would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent,” he told the Orlando Sentinel.
At least four Pulse club-goers remembered seeing Mateen at least a dozen times in the past. But authorities said they had no further information when asked about the sightings on Monday. NBC reported that the FBI was looking into his alleged club visits.
“[He’d get] really, really drunk,” Smith told the Canadian Press. “He couldn’t drink when he was at home — around his wife, or family. His father was really strict . . . He used to bitch about it.”
Callen and Smith said they both stopped speaking to Mateen when he threatened them with a knife, after someone made a joke about religion.
“He ended up pulling a knife,” Callen explained. “He said if he ever messed with him again, you know how it’ll turn out.”
They also shot down claims that Mateen had snapped after seeing two men kissing each other in public.
“That’s bullcrap, right there. No offense. That’s straight-up crap. He’s been around us,” Smith said. “Some of those people did a little more than (kiss) outside the bar…He was partying with the people who supposedly drove him to do this?”
Makes you wonder where the claim came from. The news says Daddy but Daddy isn't talking right now...
Kevin West, another regular at Pulse, told the Los Angeles Times that Mateen used gay dating apps on a regular basis and even messaged him on the gay dating app, Jack’d. He even saw Mateen an hour before the shooting.
“He walked directly past me. I said, ‘Hey,’ and he turned and said, ‘Hey,’ ” and nodded his head, recalled West. “I could tell by the eyes [it was him].”
One Orlando man, who refused to be named, told MSNBC that he had seen photos of Mateen on several gay dating apps, including Grindr, Adam4Adam, and Jack’d. He claimed that at least two of the man’s friends had been contacted by Mateen on the apps in the past.
“He was very creepy in his messages, and I blocked him immediately,” the man said.

The writer, Bob Owens, is wrong. Sig Sauer offers the upper separately, stating it is compatible with a mil std AR-15 lower receiver. I didn't find a part number, though.

Yousuf knew just beyond that pack of panicked people -- was a door -- and safety. But someone had to unlatch it.
'And I'm screaming 'Open the door! Open the door!' And no one is moving because they are scared," he explained. "There was only one choice. Either we all stay there and we all die, or I could take the chance, and I jumped over to open that latch a we got everyone that we can out of there.'..."
How many people went through the door?
"Probably over 60, 70. As soon as people found that door was open they kept pouring out and after that we just ran," he explained.
He saved a lot of people.
"I wish I could have saved more to be honest," he said through tears. "There are a lot of people that are dead ...there are a lot of people that are dead."
Before the interview, Yousuf told CBS News he hadn't really processed all the lives lost. But, once the combat vet started talking about it, the tears kept coming.

Orlando police SWAT Team Capt. Mark Canty told Channel 9 Monday that [the team] who stormed the gunman are OK. They never cowered, not even from possible explosives.
“After we heard about the bomb, typically the response is to back away. But since we knew there were people in there, my guys stayed right there. I probably couldn't have pried them away from the door because they knew that those people's lives were in danger,” Canty said.
They stormed the building three hours after the massacre started, but a lot of people were rescued in between.
An off-duty officer and two others had opened fire, forcing gunman Omar Mateen to retreat to a bathroom where he took hostages.
First I heard of anyone at/near the club other than the SWAT team shooting at Mateen.
While he was surrounded, some officers were able to rescue some people, and some were wounded and bleeding.
Canty said there was a turning point when Orlando Police Chief John Mina made the call that they had to force their way in to rescue more people.
“He did say he had a vest and he did talk about putting vests on the hostages,” said Canty.
Mina said they used explosives to create an escape hatch.
“We had to use a Bearcat; broke a hole through the wall, a 3-foot hole. People came running out, and then the gunman came out and we returned fire and killed him,” said Mina.

Expecting CNN to test the narrative that better MH counseling out reach to LGBT and/or less homophobia in US plus gun control would have prevented this tragedy perped by a self loathing gay who was incidentally a muslin.
There have been so many "sensitive" responses to the nightclub massacre in Orlando, that I should like to add an insensitive one, for the sake of variety. I note that the pundits -- and every amateur politician is a talking head these days -- divide roughly along party lines on whether the shooter was an Islamic fanatic, or a generic madman. This strikes me as a "both/and" proposition, rather than an "either/or".
This is a key point. Whether or not the Orlando killer was truly bipolar (he grew up in an Afghani household, where behaviour that seems insane in the West is expected), the diagnosably dangerous follow fads -- identifying as Napolean one decade, raped by aliens another, killing at the order of angels or now picking up the gauntlet of jihad. And in terms of jihad, both Al Qaeda and ISIS have been sending orders through the internet to "kill the unbelievers where you live." Muslim jihad has always made use of the unbalanced as well as of the trained warrior to spread terror and speed conquest. The current age is no different, for all that to us living in it it's modernity.
Yes, Florida gun laws seem a bit lax, perhaps they should be tightened. But then I held this opinion before the massacre, keeping it to myself only because it was none of my business. Perhaps I am over-Canadian, for I tend to think the open sale of battlefield weapons such as the semi-automatic assault rifle this Omar Mateen was carrying, a little over-the-top. I presume that, "even in America," the citizen’s right to bear arms does not extend to, say, nuclear weapons. Reasonable men might decide upon some reasonable limits; but between the current spokesmen for the respective political parties, I do not detect much reasonable manliness; only a propensity to grandstanding.
..."Let us be clear," as the Obama loves to say, in his station as talking-head-in-chief. Grand displays of public grieving are invariably fraudulent. Those who knew none of the victims are faking it. Those who encourage them are morally disordered.
As a customary principle of politics, whether "electoral" or "appointive," I think it unwise to adjust legislation, or offer to adjust it, in response to behaviour by the criminally insane. This confers too much power on them. Verily, it is a mark of our present social condition that "reforms" are guided more and more by the hardest and strangest cases. (Dare I mention the word, "trans"? Was there really a continuing national crisis in the designation of toilet facilities?)
...Which points again to the deeper "problematic" (one tires of the misuse of this word) in politics as practised today. We not only legislate in response to the transient behaviour of the criminally insane. Worse, our legislators, though arguably sane to start with, get in the habit of indulging insanity, even within themselves.

The term "semi-automatic assault rifle" is an oxymoron: assault rifles are, by necessity, full automatic, and mere semi-automatics (a.k.a. "autoloaders") would be useless (these days, anyway) as a battlefield weapon. The autoloading AR-15 used by the Orlando shooter is no more lethal than an ordinary utility rifle such as the autoloading Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle-- it just looks more badass, due to its visual resemblance to the military full-automatic M-16, which is an assault weapon.
Democrats like to blur the distinction between these two fundamentally different types of rifle, because doing so helps them further their goal of banning all firearms. Those Republicans who go along with the Democrats, usually do so out of simple ignorance.

No one doesn't. One recalls President Obama, et al not responding in the same way after San Bernadino, or more pointedly the "workplace violence" label of the mass murder of his fellow troops by that Muslim military psychiatrist whose name escapes me.
[IBD] However great the shock of the massacre in Orlando, it is only a matter of time before we start hearing again the fact-free dogma that "diversity is our strength."
If there is any place in the Guinness Book of World Records for words repeated the most often, over the most years, without one speck of evidence, "diversity" should be a prime candidate.

"When in Rome do as the Romans do" was once a common saying. Absolution. Concur with RC - it appears that Mateen's motive was the same as Muhammad Youseff Abdulazziz' (Chattanooga shooter) - he sought martyrdom for absolution of his sin. Shame (from his father), alcohol, and the example of his martyr friend were a toxic combination.

I predicted Sunday that Mateen was motivated by 1) Jihadi beliefs 2) anger and 3) repressed homosexuality. I'm beginning to think I got all three.
At least four regular customers at the Orlando gay nightclub where a gunman killed 49 people said Monday that they had seen Omar Mateen there before.
Which is rather interesting given that he lived over a hundred miles away, and had a wife and child at home...
"Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent," Ty Smith said.
Cord Cedeno and Chris Callen are other Pulse customers who told the Sentinel they had seen Mateen in the nightclub. Callen said he had witnessed violent outbursts by Mateen.

A US drone attack in southern Yemen killed two suspected A Qaeda members, the second deadly strike in as many days, security sources said Monday.
The drone on Sunday targeted a car driving in Habban, killing "two Al-Qaeda fighters and wounding their driver," one of the sources said.
The strike comes after an American drone attack on Saturday killed two other presumed Al Qaeda members in their vehicle in Marib province, east of the capital Sanaa.
Washington, which views Al Qaeda's Yemen-based branch as its most dangerous, acknowledged on May 7 that a "very small number" of US military personnel have also been deployed in support of the operation to retake former Al Qaeda stronghold of Mukalla.

Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) is expected to sign a contract with the Kremlin to build a massive new warship called Project 23560 Lider (or Leader in English) after the design is finalized later this year.
"At present, Preliminary Design 23560 Leader is under consideration at the Ministry of Defense,” Igor Ponomarev, USC vice president for military shipbuilding told state-owned RIA Novosti. “After a positive decision, we expect to sign a contract to develop and design the ship under terms defined by the Ministry of Defense.”
The new warship is classified as a destroyer but will displace 17,500 metric tons, with a length of 200m (656.2ft) and a beam of 20m (65.6ft)—making it larger than most World War II-era heavy cruisers.
Is there a reason why we can't call it a heavy cruiser?
Indeed, the Leader-class—which is expected to be armed with no fewer than 200 missiles—will be the second largest modern surface combatants built after the four massive 28,000-ton nuclear-powered Project 1144 Orlan battle-cruisers (better known as the Kirov-class).
The new warship is being designed with anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic missile, anti-surface and anti-submarine capability. It is also likely to have a significant land-attack capability using long-range cruise missiles such as the Kalibr-NK. From what little is known about the Leader-class, the vessels are expected to be equipped with 60 anti-ship cruise missiles, 128 anti-aircraft guided missiles and 16 anti-ship guided missiles. There are no details available about the exact mix of missiles that are expected to be carried onboard, but the air defense systems are likely to be based on either the S-400 or S-500 while some of the anti-ship weapons are likely to be variants of the Zircon hypersonic missile.

1. The Russians commission the first new frigate class in nearly sixty years, the Admiral Grigorivich class FFG, in March of this year. (The Grigorovich design is by all apparent indicators an update of the long-serving Krivak class, first commissioned in the late '50s.)
2. While arriving at her home port of Sevastapol for the first time on June 9th, the crew ran her into the dock, doing some serious damage in the process.
3. The last three ships in the class are still sitting in the yard without engines. Seems a Ukranian company was to provide them but no longer wishes to (I know, can't imagine why either) and the new Russian contractor can't provide them until 2019.
I hope the Russians won't take it personally if I'm just a wee bit skeptical.

The Obama administration is not pursuing the use of an executive order to shutter the Guantanamo Bay military prison after officials concluded that it would not be a viable strategy, sources familiar with the deliberations said. The conclusion, reached by administration officials, narrows the already slim chances that President Barack Obama can fulfill his pledge to close the notorious offshore prison before leaving office in January.
The White House has said repeatedly that Obama has not ruled out any options on the Guantanamo center, which has been used to house terrorism suspects since it was set up in 2001 following the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington.
Obama is eager to fulfill his foolish 2008 campaign pledge to close the prison and could still choose to use his commander-in-chief powers, but the option is not being actively pursued, the sources said.

In Chaos Theory, the “butterfly effect” is the name given to the sensitive connection between initial conditions in which an insignificant event in one state in non-linear systems, can result in sometimes catastrophic events in the universal state.
In other words, although unlikely, it is possible for a butterfly flapping its wings in Texas to cause a typhoon in the Japanese Sea.
Case in point, in mid-20th Century America, a loose 18-year-old hippie female in a Honolulu college had sex with an older, alcoholic Kenyan man on a student visa, who had a wife and child back in Africa. And this less than significant event started the collapse and dissolution of the United States of America.
1. The real story is - Obama continues to deny Justice for the families of the 9/11 victims. Move the Judge, defense and prosecutors down there and make them stay until the 9/11 trial is complete.
2. Establish a location to detain, interrogate, and prosecute captured terrorists. Detainee terrorists = actionable intel = additional targets.
3. Prosecute the detainees once intel collection is complete...whether it be in Federal Court, Commissions, or a host nation. Lawfare, warfare...I don't care - lets just get it done.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An Arab citizen was locked away ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... for five years by the United Arab Emirates Monday for having ties to Syria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front, the official WAM news agency reported.
It said the man, whose nationality was not given, will be deported after serving his sentence.
Another four people ‐ "of Arab, American and European nationality" - were each given one year "for not informing the authorities about the activities" of the first man, WAM said.
A sixth man in the same case was given a three-month prison term for illegal possession of a firearm. The same Federal High Court also delivered its verdict in a case relating to the Moslem Brüderbund organization.
Fifteen Yemenis and four Emiratis were convicted of "forming a Moslem Brüderbund cell and collecting financial contributions" for the organization, which is banned in the UAE, the news agency said.
Without giving details, it said the maximum sentence given was three years in prison, but added that some defendants had been acquitted.
Trials in the UAE’s Federal High Court are not open to the foreign media.

According to Fox News’ Catherine Herridge, the revelation came during a closed door meeting with FBI Director James Comey Monday afternoon.
"Director Comey confirmed to news hounds this morning that there was a full FBI investigation of Omar Mateen in 2013," she explained. "It was 10 months in length, and it was opened after he told his coworkers that he had family connections to Al Qaeda, that he was a member of a Shi’a terrorism organization and that he hoped law enforcement would raid his home and assault his wife so that he could then retaliate and martyr himself."
"That investigation was very extensive," Herridge continued. "It involved the use of confidential informants -- also surveillance -- by the FBI as well as two in person interviews with Mateen."
"At the end of 10 months the investigation was closed with no further action. They took Mateen’s statements he was trying to taunt his coworkers because he thought he was being marginalized because of his Moslem faith."
In other words, he fooled the FBI...

The operation involves joint Iraqi forces, including Kurdish peshmerga, as well as a US Marine artillery post based outside Makhmur.
Qayyarah, which has an air field, lies to the west, on the other side of the Tigris river, but is still about 60 kilometers (35 miles) south of Mosul.
Nineveh operations command said the offensive saw Iraqi forces close in on Hajj Ali, a village on the banks of the Tigris that is the last key ISIS position before Qayyarah.
The Iraqi forces said they were supported by air strikes from the US-led coalition.
The fresh operation comes as Iraqi forces are advancing in Fallujah province as they have controlled the southern neighborhood of Shuhada.
A statement, issued by the Popular Mobilization Forces, mentioned that ISIS has set the age of 10 for the kids to be recruited in its ranks due to its huge losses after it used to resort to those who are 14 and above .
The statement added that ISIS is forcefully recruiting at least one of each family's members in Fallujah in order to fight the Iraqi forces.
Media reports also noted that ISIS executed 19 of its holy warriors because they fled the battlefield in Fallujah.
On the other hand, the Iraqi defense minister Khaled Obeidi asserted that Fallujah campaign is few days away from announcing the complete victory, noting that what delays that the end of the battle is that ISISholy warriors are taking the civilians as human shields.

Rajab contacted his family and told them that he's detained in Al-Rifaa Al-Sharqi detention center without knowing the cause of his arrest.
The human rights activist was apprehended in a dawn raid on his home in the village of Bani Jamra near Manama, according to his family.
"Rajab was arrested from his house and his house was searched," Sumaya Rajab, his wife, posted on Twitter.
The Bahrain Forum for Human Rights confirmed the arrest.
Rajab has been arrested several times since the start of the anti-regime uprising in the tiny Persian Gulf island in 2011. He was sentenced to six months in prison in January 2015 for posting tweets critical of the Al Khalifa regime. In May last year, a Bahraini court upheld Rajab’s jail sentence.
Rajab, who is also a co-founder of the Gulf Center for Human Rights, has been critical of Manama’s heavy-handed crackdown on peaceful anti-regime protests.
The arrest came as the Al Khalifa regime prevented a delegation of activists from traveling to Geneva, Switzerland ...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell... , to attend the 32nd session of the UN Human Rights Council on Monday.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The shadow judge of the Taliban group identified as Qazi Mohsin was maimed during an operation in northern Baghlan province of Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said at least 15 Talibs were killed during the operations conducted in Dand-e-Ghori.
According to a statement by MoD, the Talibs suffered the casualties as part of Naveed#1 operations being conducted to suppress the activities of the group.
The statement further added that Qazi Mohsin was appointed by the Taliban as group’s shadow judge in Dand-e-Ghori where the Talibs were once looking to create safe havens.
MoD said the operations, Naveed#1, are being implemented by the 209th Corps of the Afghan National Army (ANA) forces.
The Talibs group has not commented regarding the report so far.
Dand-e-Ghori and Dand-e-Shahabuddin are among the volatile areas in northern Baghlan province where the Taliban forces of Evil have been attempting to expand foothodl during the past several months.

According to a statement by MoD, the Afghan armed forces will not allow any unilateral move and establishment of installations without consultations with the Afghan government.
The statement further added that ministry has taken necessary steps to prevent the establishment of installations, insisting that "the Ministry of Defense has precisely reviewed the recent movements along the zero point of Durand Line, including the Torkham and other areas and has instructed the 201st Silab Corps in Nangarhar to deploy forces and equipment to provide support to the Afghan border police posts."
The statement by MoD was released hours after a heavy clash erupted among the Afghan border guards and the Pak forces in Torkham.
The Afghan officials are saying festivities erupted after the Afghan prevented the military installation by Pak forces in Torkham.
According to the officials, an Afghan border police has lost his life and six others were maimed during the clash and the Pak side has also suffered casualties.

A businessman has been caught in Istanbul trying to sell a dagger looted from the palace of former Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi. He was trying to sell the dagger, which was made of ivory and garnished with gold, emeralds, diamonds, rubies and sapphires, for $10 million, Turkish daily Habertürk reported on June 13.
The businessman, identified as A.A., was caught by anti-smuggling police as he tried to sell the dagger to Saudi businessmen.
“Your exchange office should pay our exchange office $10 million. If the dagger is not authentic, then you can come and take your money from us,” A.A. told the police, who had disguised themselves as customers wanting to buy the dagger.
The police then began to track the businessman, who was a textile exporter from the southeastern province of Mardin, and started an operation after learning he was going to sell the dagger to his Saudi customers in a hotel in the Bakırköy district of Istanbul.
A.A., who left Istanbul’s Bahçeşehir district in one of three luxury cars, was stopped by the anti-smuggling police, who were disguised as traffic police. The cars were trying to reach Bakırköy separately from three different roads and the dagger was found in the trunk of one of the cars. The businessman and two others working with him were detained in the operation.
A.A. claimed he bought Gadhafi’s dagger from the opposition groups in Libya for $4.6 million.
The dagger was later sent to Turkey’s Chamber of Jewelers to prove its authenticity and the chamber concluded that the dagger was original. It was worth at least $2 million, according to the chamber.
There seems to be some disparity in the value of the dagger...
Legal action was taken against the businessman for the ivory in the dagger, which violated the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and for smuggling.
If the progressives had only known that Gadhafi had killed an elephant for its ivory they would have wanted him dead two decades ago...
Gadhafi’s dagger was seized on the grounds that it was a piece incompatible with CITES and was brought to Turkey illegally.

ALEPPO – Syrian rebels targeted the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with a TOW missile in the countryside of Aleppo, northern Syria.
“A faction in the northern countryside of Aleppo, used a missile to target a bulldozer for the Syria Democratic Forces was parked in an area between the outskirts of Sheikh Issa village and the Marea area in the northern countryside of Aleppo,” the SOHR reported on Monday.
Local sources confirmed that the targeting was with a US TOW missile, but it caused no casualties.
Also the Islamic factions bombed positions for Jaysh al-Thuwwar which fights under the Syria Democratic Forces in the town of Tall Rifaat in the northern countryside of Aleppo.
The Syrian rebels handed over Sheikh Issa to the SDF, after ISIS besieged them in late May, for a safe passage for civilians. As a result, Azaz and Marea did not fell in the hands of the Islamic State group.
Speaking to ARA News, Washington-based Middle East researcher at the Centre for a New American Security Nicholas Heras said: “This type of targeting would likely be a breach of the instructions given to the TOW-supplied groups to not fire their missiles at another force supported by the United States.”
“However the details on this story are still murky, so it is entirely possible that if the TOW was fired, it was fired as a one-off shot by a faction along the Marea Line that was angry at a specific constituent militia of the SDF, such as Jaysh al-Thuwar,” he added.
KOBANE – The Russian government seem to support a recent offensive of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to retake Manbij city from ISIS, and to stop ISIS fighters from organizing attacks on European territory.
“Kurdish militias from the Syrian Democratic Forces, active in the north with the aid of the US-led coalition’s air force, have also declared the start of a campaign to liberate Raqqa. Importantly, Kurdish militias have ousted ISIS from several towns along the Euphrates and approached Manbij in the northeast of the Aleppo province,” Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
The Russian government also accused Syrian rebel groups of killing over 40 civilians in the Kurdish neighbourhood of Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo with support from Turkey. “The attacks involve up to 2,000 jihadi fighters. According to media reports, they are under Turkish military instructors’ command,” she told a press conference earlier on Friday.
Speaking to ARA News, SDF spokesman Sharvan Darwish accused the Turkey-backed rebels of trying to take revenge against the SDF-project, after several failures to defeat the SDF forces in the Kurdish district of Afrin.
“As a result 1,000 civilians were killed and injured by missiles, and they [pro-Turkey rebels] bomb civilians with gas canisters,” he said.
“Sheikh Maqsoud is a Kurdish neighbourhood, but Arab IDPs live there, fled from other areas, who are now being bombed by these groups. The neighbourhood is attacked by two sides: the Syrian regime and FSA rebels,” he told ARA News.
Recently, heavy clashes broke out between SDF-forces and Syrian opposition rebels near Sheikh Issa in the Aleppo province.

A news agency linked to the Islamic State claimed the attack, a US-based monitor said. The SITE Intelligence Group, based just outside Washington, cited the Amaq News Agency as saying: "Islamic State fighter kills deputy chief of the cop shoppe in the city of Les Mureaux and his wife with blade weapons near #Gay Paree."
French prosecutors have launched an anti-terror probe after the policeman and his partner were killed at their home in the Gay Paree suburb of Magnanville.
Witnesses told Sherlocks the man may have shouted "holy shit! Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) as he stabbed the policeman repeatedly outside his home before holing up inside with the woman and the couple’s three-year-old son.
Sources close to the inquiry told AFP the attacker had claimed allegiance to the Islamic State jihadist group while negotiating with police from the elite RAID unit.
"The anti-terror department of the Gay Paree prosecution service is taking into account at this stage the mode of operation, the target and the comments made during negotiations with the RAID," one source said.
Loud detonations were heard at the scene as RAID officers moved in following failed negotiations with the attacker.
Officers found the woman’s body when they stormed the building, and the attacker was killed during the assault, interior ministry front man Pierre-Henry Brandet said.
The couple’s young son was "in shock but unharmed," a prosecutor added, saying he was receiving medical attention.
French President Francois Hollande ...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist... said a meeting would be held at the presidential palace Tuesday morning, declaring that "all light will be shed" on the bloody incident.
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve expressed his "infinite sadness" at the death of the police commander and his partner, who had worked for his ministry.
"The attacker was neutralized by RAID forces, who showed great composure and great professionalism and who saved the couple’s little boy," Cazeneuve said in a statement. "The inquiry opened by the justice authorities will establish the precise circumstances of this tragedy."
Police sources had told AFP earlier in the evening that the attacker had taken the policeman’s partner and son hostage after stabbing the officer to death as he returned home around 9:00 pm (1900 GMT).
"The negotiations were unsuccessful -- a decision was made to launch an assault" around midnight, interior ministry front man Brandet said.

The attacker is identified as 25-year-old Larossi Abbala.
Abbala was from the western Paris suburb of Mantes-la-Jolie and was sentenced in 2013 to three years in prison, including six months suspended, for recruiting fighters for jihad in Pakistan, according to two police officials. The officials were not authorized to be publicly named discussing ongoing investigations.
Two other security officials said Abbala recorded a video during the knife attack. One of them said the assailant posted the video on Facebook Live, the social media site's live feed.
A Facebook profile bearing the name Larossi Abballa -- which vanished from the internet early Tuesday -- showed a photo of a smiling, bearded man. Two recent posts featured videos critical of Israel and Saudi Arabia. The last post publicly available was a mock-up of the European Championship logo highlighting the posters' purported masonic and occult symbols.
"Some will say we see evil everywhere!" Abballa said in a message posted about 18 hours before the attack.
One police official said at one point in the video, the assailant puzzled over what to do with the couple's child.
Abballa had a list of other targets, including rappers, journalists, police officers and public officials, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said Tuesday.
Abballa was responding to IS calls to “kill non-believers where they live,” and with their families, Molins said.
Aballa recorded a 12-minute video related to the attack and posted it on Facebook, Molins said, but he did not provide further details or confirm an earlier report from a police official who said Abballa posted the video on Facebook’s live-streaming service, Facebook Live.
Molins said three people —ages 27, 29 and 44 — were detained Tuesday in the investigation. He did not provide any other details.
A resident of the apartment building where Abballa lived, who did not want to give his name, said police raided it early Tuesday.
Neighborhood resident Henriette Yenge, who lives and works near the building, said she would say hello to Abballa when he went to the mosque around the corner.
“He was a neighborhood kid,” she said. “I was surprised it was him. It’s sad to see things like that.”

(IraqiNews.com) Baghdad – Three casualties were reported from northern Baghdad after a sniper attack at an army checkpoint in the area on Monday.
In a press statement, a copy of which was also obtained by Iraqi News, it was stated, “This morning in a sniper attack at an army checkpoint in al-Tarmiyah district in northern Baghdad killed one soldier and injured two others.”
“The security force transferred the injured to a nearby hospital for availing them with better medical treatments. The body of the deceased soldier was sent ofr forensic tests,” added the statement.
(IraqiNews.com) Anbar – The Leadership of al-Hashd al-Shaabi’s paramilitary force in Anbar Province announced on Monday that the joint security forces had stormed into al-Halabesa area in western Fallujah and killed dozens of ISIS fighters during the operation.
The commander of the 2nd regiment in al-Somoud brigade, Colonel Orans Mohamed al-Eissawi, said in a press statement obtained by IraqiNews.com that “The joint security forces stormed into al-Halabesa area (10 km west of Fallujah),” indicating that, “Dozens of ISIS members were killed during the operation.”
Eissawi added, “The military operation that targeted ISIS strongholds and gatherings surprised the enemy who started to flee to central Fallujah.”
(IraqiNews.com) Anbar – On Monday, a source in Anbar Operations Command said that the joint security forces were able to arrest one of the assistants of the ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during a security operation in northern Ruthba west of Anbar.
The source said in a statement received by IraqiNews.com, “A joint security force carried out a military operation, at noon, against ISIS gatherings in al-Nazera area west of Anbar and arrested the assistant of the ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, [known as] Rasheed Khalaf Dahi.”
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added, “The security forces also seized large quantities of weapons, explosive belts, secret encrypted documents and fake passports.”
(IraqiNews.com) Anbar – On Monday, officials in the Anbar Operations Command revealed that the joint security forces have started military operations and stormed into central Fallujah (62 km west of Baghdad). It was further informed that the forces so far have shot down six (6) suicide bombers during the operation.
An official statement issued by the Anbar Operations Command and also received by Iraqi News, stated, “This morning the joint security forces started a military operation to advance into Nezal neighborhood in central Fallujah after liberating al-Shuhada neighborhood to the south of the city.”
“The [security] forces clashed with ISIS members and managed to kill six (6) suicide bombers of the organisation,” the statement continued.
Adding further,“Nezal neighborhood in central Fallujah is one of the most important residential neighborhoods of the city center. ISIS is trying to booby-trap large number of main roads and houses to hinder the progress of the security forces.”
(IraqiNews.com) Anbar – The Federal Police Command announced on Monday about destroying the ISIS communications headquarters in southern Fallujah during the liberation battles of the city and informed about the killing of a number of ISIS members during the operations.
Federal Police Chief, Major General Raed Shaker Jawdat, in a press statement, a copy of which was also received by Iraqi News, said, “The joint security forces from the army, Federal Police and local police in Anbar managed to destroy a communication headquarter belonging to ISIS in Amiriyah near southern Fallujah and killed the ISIS members who were inside it.”
Jawdat added, “The liberation battles of Fallujah are still going on in all areas especially after liberating al-Shuhada neighborhood completely.”
“The joint security forces are working to evacuate the innocent civilians from Fallujah axes and away from the battles against ISIS members,” Jawdat continued.
Iraqi forces blunt ISIS attack near Ramadi
(IraqiNews.com) al-Anbar – Anbar Operations Command announced on Monday, that the security forces managed to repel an attack by ISIS on an army headquarter in al-Juraishi area towards north of Ramadi.
The commander of Anbar Operations said in a brief statement obtained by Iraqi News, “ISIS carried out an attack by booby-trapped vehicles and various weapons on an army headquarters belonging to the [army’s] Tenth Division in al-Juraishi area north of Ramadi,” adding that, “The security forces were able to foil the attack and kill all the [ISIS] members in the attack.”

[IsraelTimes] The following is a description of the deadly shooting rampage that unfolded at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub early Sunday, where 49 people were rubbed out and 53 others were maimed, according to authorities and witness accounts.
Gunman Omar Mateen was killed in a shootout with police.
Closing time: shooter on the scene
-- Just after 2:00 am as the club was closing, Mateen, a 29-year-old American of Afghan descent, opens fire.
-- An off-duty policeman working at the club engages the suspect, "somewhere near one of the entrances," according to Orlando Police Chief John Mina. Shots are fired.
-- Shortly after that, more officers respond to the scene and enter the club. More shots are fired.
-- At 2:09 am, the club posts a message on Facebook that reads: "Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running."
-- Clubgoer Christopher Hanson says he thought at first that the loud, rhythmic sounds were part of the music "until you heard too many shots. It was like, bang, bang, bang, bang."
"I just saw bodies going down and I was ordering a drink at the bar. I fell down. I crawled out. People were trying to escape out the back," he told CNN.
Hostages taken
-- Mateen, armed with an assault rifle and a handgun, retreats to a club bathroom, where Mina says he is believed to have held four or five hostages.
-- "It was like complete chaos. If I can relate it to anything, I would say it was like a scene out of a movie," witness Janiel Gonzalez tells AFP.
"People were screaming ’Help me, help me, I’m trapped.’ And people were getting trampled. There was no clear exit sign at the club, so we didn’t know which door to take or where to go."
-- One of the maimed, Angel Colon Jr, describes how Mateen moved through the club, shooting at each person on the ground to be sure they were dead.
Police fear ’bomb vests’ talk
-- After Mateen takes hostages, police are able to free "dozens and dozens of people" both injured and not injured, Mina says.
-- Mateen calls the emergency number 911 a total of three times, according to FBI Director James Comey.
"During the calls, he said he was doing this for the leader of ISIS, who he named and pledged loyalty to," Comey tells news hounds on Monday, referring to the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. "But he also appeared to claim solidarity with the perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing and solidarity with a Florida man who died as a jacket wallah in Syria for al-Nusra ...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ... Front, a group in conflict with the so-called Islamic State."
-- Mateen also talks to crisis negotiators on the scene. "Things kind of stabilized," Mina says.
-- Eventually, Mateen talks about "bomb vests, about explosives throughout," Mina says. Police fear the worst and start planning to blast their way into the club.
Chaotic end
-- At 5:00 am, Mina says he takes the "hard decision" to move in, fearing that "further loss of life was imminent."
-- A SWAT team carries out a controlled kaboom. Police then use an armored vehicle to punch a hole in the wall of the club. Dozens of clubgoers escape through the hole.
-- Mateen also emerges and fires at law enforcement. He is killed in the crossfire.
-- One police officer is shot in the head, but his helmet saves his life.
-- "We believe we prevented a future loss of life and saved many, many lives," Mina says.
The security company that employed Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen also is a federal contractor for the Homeland Security and State departments -- raising more questions about how he passed background checks despite being on the FBI’s radar screen and the level of security at a firm handling sensitive U.S. operations.
Mateen, who killed 49 people and wounded dozens more early Sunday inside the gay nightclub Pulse, started working for G4S Secure Solutions in 2007 and until the attack was employed as an armed guard at a gated retirement community in South Florida.
The U.K.-based firm has a far-reaching portfolio that goes well beyond retirement villages, however, with its U.S. arm having become of the biggest government contractors since 9/11. This includes helping secure 40 U.S. embassies worldwide and working with U.S. agents on border patrol.
In a statement released Monday, the company expressed shock at the tragic attack and said they are cooperating with law enforcement.
But the FBI acknowledged having interviewed the 29-year-old Mateen in 2013 and 2014 about possible terror ties, raising questions about what G4S knew and what, if any, action the company took.
The company said Mateen passed company screenings -- including psychological and criminal checks -- when hired in 2007 and again in 2013. Spokeswoman Monica Lewman-Garcia said G4S in 2013 “learned” the FBI questioned Mateen and later closed its inquiries.
Both the FBI and G4S have to answer to that.
"He was also subject to checks by a U.S. law enforcement agency with no findings reported to G4S," the company said.
The company also states on its website: “Every G4S security officer participates in a training program that far exceeds industry standards, becoming a specialist trained to both recognize and react to unique hazards of an assigned post."
That's not the point: the point is when, and how, and how often, you reviewed his background.
At least one former G4S employee, Daniel Gilroy, says he raised numerous concerns with supervisors about Mateen’s hateful and potentially dangerous behavior. Gilroy told Fox News that he and Mateen had worked as security guards at the same South Florida resort and that Mateen, a Muslim, used “horrible words” at the sight of women and blacks and was in a constant state of “anger and rage.”
However, the company refused to take action on his complaints, and Gilroy was forced to quit last year after Mateen began sending him harassing text and phone messages, according to Florida Today.
“The company wouldn't do anything,” Gilroy told the paper. “This guy was unhinged and unstable. He talked of killing people."
FBI Director James Comey on Monday also detailed the nature of the original complaints the bureau received back in 2013. He said co-workers were concerned about "inflammatory and contradictory" statements he had made, including claiming family connections to Al Qaeda. Mateen later admitted making the statements but said he did so out of anger because he thought his co-workers were discriminating against him. The FBI closed the preliminary investigation, before briefly looking at him one more time in 2014.
G4S did not immediately respond to a request Monday by FoxNews.com asking whether Gilroy had indeed complained and if the company took any action in response.
They're huddling with their lawyers...
But the history of co-workers' complaints at a company that last year alone reportedly had $89.3 million in federal contracts raised more questions about Mateen’s continued employment and access to government information and sites.
G4S became one of the U.S. government’s biggest contractors after the 9/11 attacks.
G4S has 623,000 employees in 110 countries, including 54,000 in North America, reports show. The company’s U.S. headquarters is in Jupiter, Fla., about 150 miles southeast of Orlando, and offers a range of security services including guards and technology to several industries including retail and residential.
[IsraelTimes] Shares in the security company G4S fall over 5 percent after it emerges that the killer in the Orlando nightclub attack worked for the firm.
The company’s shares fall 9.6 pence to 177.80 on the London stock exchange after the company acknowledges that Omar Mateen worked for G4S at a residential community in south Florida. The company says Mateen was subject to a detailed screening and checks by US law enforcement, which reported no findings to G4S.
G4S came under fire during the 2012 London Olympics after failing to provide the number of security guards promised to protect the games. The British military had to be called in to fill the gap.

QUETTA: A police officer serving with Balochistan's counter-terrorism department (CTD) was gunned down on Sariab Road here on Monday, officials said.
Official sources said gunmen riding motorcycles opened fire at Station House Officer (SHO) Shabir Ahmed in Shafi Colony area of Sariab Road.
The victim was shot in the head and succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. Police said the assailants drove away on their motorcycles after the attack.
The cop's dead body was shifted to Civil Hospital Quetta.
The incident comes a day after militants attacked a Balochistan Constabulary check post in Killi Almas area of Quetta, injuring two paramilitary soldiers.
Quetta has witnessed a rise in attacks against police personnel as the government moves to clear the province of terrorist sanctuaries.
ERBIL – A leading member of the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group has executed his younger brother after the group accused him of ‘apostasy’.
The pro-ISIS media office of Wilayat Al-Jazirah released a footage showing the execution of one of the group’s members on charges of apostasy and conspiring against the ISIS self-declared Caliphate.
Abu Abdullah, an ISIS Sharia official, appears in the video executing his own brother after accusing him of disloyalty, apostasy and treason.
“Our loyalty to the Caliphate is greater than any family relations, and the law of Allah is above us all,” says Abu Abdullah before shooting his blindfolded younger brother in the head.

Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... court ordered the conditional release of the former regime officials on Thursday, and on Friday their bullet-riddled bodies were found in the capital, the prosecution said on its Facebook page.
An investigation into the murders has begun, it added.
Seems as though justice is a bit rough in Libya these days...
The victims had been imprisoned on charges of committing abuses during the NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis.... -backed uprising that toppled and killed Qadaffy.
They were freed on condition that they report to the prosecutor every two weeks.

The UN special envoy to Libya Martin Kobler condemned the murders and called for a prompt and "transparent" investigation. Kobler tweeted that he was "shocked and dismayed by the reports of murder of so many detainees released by a Tripoli court."
He is not, however, surprised...
The Government of National Accord also denounced what it called a "despicable crime." A statement on its Facebook page called on security and judiciary authorities to find the assailants and bring them to justice.
Seddiq es-Sour, of the prosecutor’s office, told Libyan television the bodies were found in various parts of the capital and confirmed that all were former prisoners.
He said they had been placed in durance vile Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw! between 2011 and 2014.
The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
Earlier this month, es-Sour had said the supreme court had ordered the release of six Qadaffy regime officials pending an appeal, for reasons linked to their health and age.
Dozens of people are on trial in Libya for their role in the violent suppression of the revolt, including two sons of Qadaffy and ex-government officials.
In July 2015 several people were sentenced to death, including Seif al-Islam, Qadaffy’s son and one-time heir apparent.

(IraqiNews.com) Nineveh – On Monday, a security force managed to shoot down a drone belonging to ISIS while it was flying above a village in Qayyarah, south of Mosul (170 km north of Baghdad).
In a press statement, a copy of which was obtained by Iraqi News, it was stated, “A force from the army’s 72nd brigade monitored a drone while flying above Kharaeb Jabr village near Qayyarah. The drone was used by ISIS for spying.”
The statement further added, “The security forces shot the drone and managed to drop it near the village, south of Mosul.”

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Orlando gunman who killed at least 50 and maimed many more, claimed to be loyal to a number of loyalist groups who are on opposing sides in the battlefield including Hezbollah and ISIS, US newspaper the Los Angeles Times reported.
Omar Mateen called 911 to say he was attacking the LGBT nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida on Sunday, swearing allegiance with ISIS.
The FBI's Director James Comey told the newspaper that since 2013 Mateen is known to have made a series elaborate claims linking his relatives to the Sunni terror network Al-Qaeda, while also claiming to have been a member of Hezbollah - the Iran-backed Shiite militia that operates in Leb. Both groups are known to oppose ISIS.
Comey said the contradictory comments and claims led to confusion surrounding his inspiration for Sunday’s devastating attack the newspaper report added.

Whatever works to terrorize the unbelievers fulfills the commandment. On the other hand, the new line at NPR yesterday was that this proved the gentleman is really just crazy, rather than a proper jihadi. Shiite Iran sheltered Al Qaeda families and fighters after 9/11, so clearly the Sunni/Shiite divide is not absolute when there is prsent or future advantage to be gained.
Out here in Dar al Harb, the difference between Al Nusra and ISIS is like between tartar control Crest toothpaste and whitening Crest; Hizb'allah by comparison is Colgate brand toothpaste. All will clean your teeth, freshen your breath, and prevent cavities. In a graveyard in Hungary, solemn contemplation gave way to frantic sportsmanship on Friday as dozens of grave diggers battled to prove they were the fastest and best in the business. I don't mean to be morbid but there are plenty of opportunities these days.
Taking their places at plots selected by pulling names out of a hard hat, 18 two-man teams waited for an official to shout "Start!" before shoveling at the ground to dig a precise, regulation-size grave as quickly as possible.
"I don't think this is morbid," the Hungarian Undertakers’ Association's deputy chairman, Zoltan Juracsik, told Reuters at the national grave-digging contest at the wooded cemetery in Debrecen, Hungary's biggest city after Budapest.
"This is a profession, and the colleagues who toil in competition today are proud and deserve our respect."
In less than half an hour, the local team, perhaps enjoying the home advantage, finished their grave first. The stragglers took almost one hour.
The graves were then judged on neatness and whether they complied with the regulation size: 200 cm long, 80 cm wide and 160 cm deep (7 feet by 2 feet 7 inches by 5 feet). The winning team wins a place in an international tournament against Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
The contest is meant to improve the prestige of grave digging and attract young men to a job that must still be done by hand in crowded graveyards where mechanical diggers cannot fit.
One of the competitors, Csaba Halasz, 21, began by taking summer job after high school. Although he graduated with a degree in physical education, he stayed in the business.
"This job chose me," he said. "It's hard but it's worth it. Relatives come and thank me every time. The profession just lured me in."

The authorities "are following up on the violations and a number of arrests have been made," government front man Saad al-Hadithi said on Monday after a regional governor said 49 Sunni men had been executed after surrendering to a Shiite faction.
Suhaib al-Rawi, governor of Anbar province where Falluja is located, said on Sunday that 643 men had gone missing between June 3 and June 5, and "all the surviving detainees were subjected to severe and collective torture by various means."
The participation of militias in the battle of Falluja, just west of Baghdad, alongside the Iraqi army had already raised fears of sectarian killings.
Falluja is a historic bastion of the Sunni insurgency against US forces that toppled Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, in 2003, and the Shiite-led governments that followed.
"Strict orders were issued to protect the civilians," government front man Hadithi said, adding that these instructions were also given to the Hashid Shaabi, or Popular Mobilization Forces, the coalition of mostly Shiite militias backed by Iran which are involved in the fighting.

Noted firearms expert Christopher Ingram writes a piece for the Washington Post to show why he thinks the Assault Weapons Ban should be re-instituted.
They're going to keep banging this drum in hopes of scaring and hood-winking ordinary people into banning one of the most popular rifles in America. Everyone in the MSM is calling it an "assault" rifle, though anyone with half a clue knows that it isn't. The Democrats and the media (but I of course repeat myself) are appealing to the clueless, which is unfortunately a substantial proportion of our country, and a larger proportion of our legislatures.
Last night in Orlando, a man armed with an assault-style rifle killed at least 50 people and wounded 53 others in a crowded nightclub.
Six months ago, in San Bernardino, Calif., a man and woman armed with assault-style rifles killed 14 people and wounded 20 others at a holiday party.
In 2012, in Aurora, Colo., a man armed with an assault-style rifle killed 12 people and wounded 58 others in a crowded movie theater.
Also in 2012, in Newtown Conn., a man armed with an assault-style rifle killed 28 people and wounded 2 others at an elementary school.
One common denominator behind these and other high-casualty mass shootings in recent years is the use of assault style rifles, capable of firing many rounds of ammunition in a relatively short period of time, with high accuracy. And their use in these types of shooting is becoming more common: There have been eight high-profile public mass shootings since July of last year, according to a database compiled by Mother Jones magazine. Assault-style rifles were used in seven of those.
In the past 10 years, assault-style rifles have been used in 14 public mass shootings. Half of those shootings have occurred since last June.
Assault-style weapons have long been a flashpoint in the American gun debate. They were outlawed in 1994. But that ban expired in 2004 and Congress opted to not renew it. Gun rights proponents point out that rifles, of any type, are rarely used to kill people in the U.S. Because of that, researchers have generally found that the assault weapons ban had little impact on U.S. homicide rates while it was in effect.
On the other hand, compared to other firearms, assault-style rifles make it fairly easy to kill or injure many people in within a short period of time. So perpetrators wishing to inflict indiscriminate harm on a large crowd of people often turn to them. Of the 10 mass shooting incidents with the highest number of casualties — killed AND wounded — in the U.S., seven involved the use of an assault-style rifle, according to Mother Jones's database.
A gunman opened fire on a crowded nightclub in Orlando early Sunday, June 12. He killed at least 50 people. The final death toll is not known, but this shooting is already the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States.
Terrorist groups have taken note of the widespread availability of assault rifles and other guns in the U.S. In 2011, al-Qaeda encouraged its followers to take advantage of lax guns laws, purchase assault-style weapons and use them to shoot people.
"America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms," American-born al-Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn said in a video. "You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?"
Gadahn was incorrect on one point — fully automatic weapons, which shoot continuously when you hold down the trigger, have been banned since 1986. But he was correct on other the other points: Most states don't require background checks for firearms purchased via private sales at gun shows. Most states don't require showing ID to purchase a firearm from a private seller.
Indeed, federal law allows people on terror watch lists to purchase guns, and thousands of them have done so.
The ease of purchasing guns in the U.S., even powerful ones designed to kill many people in a short period of time, is underscored by a crucial fact in Mother Jones's database: Of the 79 mass shootings since 1982 that Mother Jones was able to determine purchasing information for, 63 were committed with guns purchased legally.

Most gun shows have banned parking lot sales. The vendors inside pay a lot for their spaces and voiced opposition to those sales. The Virginia Tech shooter used hand guns. Try buying a fully automatic weapon at a gun show.

Sounds like he's had to smarten up just a little bit. He's no longer saying he won't let muslims into the country because that'd be unAmerican and, so I've heard, unConstitutional. (I'm not really sure about that. I don't think the Constitution guarantees any rights at all to citizens of other countries who want to immigrate to this country.) I was at university then. Immigration may have been banned, but Iranians studying in the U.S. were allowed to stay and settle. My university arranged for its Iranian students to get a mixture of jobs and grants so they could afford to stay, and supported visa and green card applications so they could stay legally.

U.S. authorities said on Monday they had found no direct links between Islamic State militants and the gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, describing him as a homegrown extremist who was inspired by radical Islamist groups.
The FBI and other agencies were still looking at evidence inside the club and on the closed-off streets around the Pulse nightclub, where New York-born Omar Mateen perpetrated the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
Mateen, 29, the son of Afghan immigrants, was shot and killed by police who stormed the club with armored cars early on Sunday morning after a three-hour siege.
"So far, we see no indication that this was a plot directed from outside the United States and we see no indication that he was part of any kind of network," FBI Director James Comey said in Washington. "We're highly confident this killer was radicalized at least in some part through the internet."

(IraqiNews.com) Diyali – Security officials in Diyali province on Monday informed that an army officer was killed during a militant attack in northeast of Baqubah.
In an official statement, a copy of which was obtained by Iraqi News, it was stated, “This evening, unidentified militants open fired at an army officer near Dur al-Aman (3 km east of al-Maqdadeiya). The officer was killed on the spot.”
“Security forces blockaded the area of the incident and transferred the dead to the forensic lab,” added the statement.

A car bomb attack apparently targeting court officials in a town in Turkey’s mainly-Kurdish southeast region injured at least nine people Monday, the country’s state-run news agency reported.
The explosion occurred close to housing for courthouse employees in the town of Ovacik, in Tunceli province, Anadolu Agency reported. Three of the wounded were in serious condition. A police officer was also among those wounded, the report said.
The explosion cause several small fires which were quickly extinguished, Anadolu added.
Last week, two car bomb explosions, both claimed by Kurdish militants, killed 17 in Istanbul and the southern town of Midyat.
The militant group, Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, which is considered an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, claimed responsibility for a car-bomb attack that targeted a police vehicle and killed six police officers and five civilians.
Istanbul’s bombing was followed a day later by a suicide attack targeting the police headquarters in the southeastern town of Midyat that killed three police officers and three civilians.
A senior Turkish government official has denied reports of a deal between Ankara and Germany about the latter’s request to set up a temporary military facility inside the İncirlik Air Base, describing news reports on the issue as “speculation.”
“There is a request issued by Germany on the İncirlik Base. But no decision has been made about this request. The request is there but assessments other than that are nothing but speculations,” Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli told reporters after the cabinet meeting on June 13.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Fresh festivities have reportedly among the Afghan and Pak forces in Torkham, hours after a heavy clash broke out between the two sides.
According to reports, the clash resumed around 4 pm local time but there are no other information available regarding the incident.
The clash between the two sides erupted late on Sunday night after the Afghan forces prevented the Pak troops to work on military establishment along the zero line.
An Afghan border policeman lost his life during the clash and at least six others were maimed but there is still no exact information available regarding the Pak forces casualties.
The latest skirmish between the two sides erupted hours after a ceasefire was agreed and the Afghan Ambassador started diplomatic efforts to reduce the tensions.

The Lions of Islam were decimated after being caught in the ambush of IRGC ground forces as they tried to sneak into Iran.
PJAK randomly carries out hit-and-run attacks on Iranian targets, after which they retreat to their lairs in Iraq and Turkey.

[Iraq Sun] New Delhi, June 13 (ANI): A Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Monday denied bail to nine Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) suspects for allegedly plotting terror strikes at various places, including the Ardh Kumbh at Haridwar, in India.
Rejecting the bail plea of the suspects, the court observed that it was not a fit case for bail.
It was alleged they were conspiring to target the Ardh Kumbh Mela at Haridwar, especially trains headed there, besides some other strategic locations in the national capital.
Reportedly, all of them were found to have links with a former Indian Mujahideen A locally recruited auxilliary of Pakistain's Lashkar-e-Taiba, designed to give a domestic patina to Pakistain's terror war against its bigger neighbor... (IM) terrorist, who later went to fight for the ISIS and is currently believed to be a key member of the Ansar-ut Tawhid fi Bilad al-Hind (AuT), which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
One of the suspects, Akhlaq, was questioned in connection with the attack at the Pathankot airbase.

[Iraq Sun] The Iraqi army earlier this year regained control of Ramadi, the capital of the country's vast Anbar province, and in recent weeks has been battling to retake Fallujah, ... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids... another city in the province, from ISIS jihadists.
Major General Ismail al-Mahalawi said the ISIS attack targeted an army base in Ramadi with several explosives-laden vehicles driven by jacket wallahs and gunnies who fired on soldiers.
"Our forces killed all the attackers and destroyed all the boom-mobiles but there were a number of killed and maimed among army ranks," said Mahalawi, who heads the operations command for Anbar province.
Two senior Iraqi army officers, speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... , said five soldiers were killed and 11 maimed in the attack.
The attack highlighted ISIS's continued ability to stage deadly operations in areas where it lost control of territory, as the government seeks to bring local populations back and start rebuilding.
Fallujah, which lies about half way between Baghdad and Ramadi, 50km west of the Iraqi capital, is ISIS's last major bastion in Anbar.
