Now it's serious! Venezuela is almost out of beer
HT to AOSHQ. Bolivarian Victory!
Throughout their country's descent into political and economic crisis, Venezuelans of all stripes have at least been able to rely on one thing: drowning their sorrows in beer.

Locals of the sweltering South American nation love to down the kinds of heavily chilled light lagers popular from Mexico to Argentina.

But pretty soon Venezuela could run dry. And that could be even more devastating than it sounds. How did it come to this?

For one, brewery workers are on strike demanding higher wages.
greedy capitalist guttersnipes!
Members of the Sintraterricentro union downed tools last week at two bottling plants belonging to the Polar brewery. It supplies roughly 80 percent of Venezuela's beer, including market leader Polar Pilsen. The union is tiny but its members hold key positions at the plant, meaning that production has ground to a halt.
A UNION?
The nation's human rights ombudsman has stepped in to mediate. But Empresa Polar executives accuse him of a bias toward the union, which is allied with the socialist government of President Nicolas Maduro.
A union allied with a socialist? Has that ever happened before?
On top of that, there's a shortage of imported beer ingredients.

Add that to the list of basics in short supply, like medicines toilet paper and food items, thanks to a raft of economic problems including a lack of dollars.

So far, store shelves are well stocked with beer bottles, according to the Associated Press. But that may change very soon. The national brewers association says raw materials for beer-making will run out by August.
just in time for the start of their summer
The timing could hardly be worse.
no sh*t!
Venezuela is suffering 615 percent inflation, says Johns Hopkins University economist Steve H. Hanke. The country also has one of the world's highest homicide rates. And the government's been locking up critics.

So, you might say Venezuelans could use a drink.

Car bomb near Italian consulate in Cairo kills one
[Reuters] A bomb blew up in front of the Italian consulate in Cairo today, killing one person. A security official said the blast was caused by a car bomb.

State news agency MENA cited a senior security official as saying preliminary investigations indicated that a bomb was placed under a car near the consulate and detonated remotely.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the early morning blast, which caused heavy damage to the consulate. It shook other buildings downtown and could be heard in surrounding neighborhoods.

Italy's Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said there were no Italian victims in the blast. He said, "Italy will not be intimidated."

FBI: Breakdown in background check system allowed Dylann Roof to buy gun
h/t Instapundit
Dylann Roof, who is accused of killing nine people at a church in South Carolina three weeks ago, was able to purchase the gun used in the attack only because of lapses in the FBI's background-check system, FBI Director James B. Comey said Friday.

Comey said Roof should have been prevented from buying the .45-caliber weapon used in the shooting, which authorities have said was motivated by Roof's racist views. The political repercussions of the June 17 massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston led South Carolina to remove the Confederate flag from its statehouse grounds Friday.

#5  The FBI says its background-check system failed, mistakenly allowing the man who allegedly opened fire inside a South Carolina church last month to purchase the gun he used in the rampage.

So what Mr. "Blame Anybody but Me" Obama immediately tries to spin as a Republican, NRA, confederate flag flying, white privilege gun-culture problem ends up actually being the result of yet one more catastrophic failure of incompetent government.

The immigration system is broken, the IRS system is broken, the veteran administration is broken, the postal system is a mess, the congress and judicial systems (just to name a few) are dysfunctional. After six years of Obama's rule, what part of government is not dysfunctional ?

We have people dying in the streets, in the harbors, in our hospitals and in our churches. And the latest solution, according to Mr. Obama's maladaptive response, is to blame and take down a single flag flying above a Civil War memorial in South Carolina.

The astounding imbecility of it all stupefies even the barely remaining sane amongst us.

And all the while we diffidently divert our eyes in acquiescence as Mr. Obama spikes the ball and revels in his own intolerable audacity.

I continue to wonder who deserves to bear the most shame... Mr. Obama for his intolerable audacity or we the people who invariably and timidly allow him to get away with it.

Was Feminism Always Bad?
h/t Instapundit
Most fair-minded people deplore the excesses of modern feminism--its triviality, its mean-spiritedness, and its claiming of special privileges for women on the basis of their putative suffering under patriarchy.

What happened to "equal rights"? What turned feminism into a shrill, rancorous movement that hounds men for a plethora of claimed sexual crimes, harps on female moral superiority, and seeks to rid the world of masculine energy, competitive drive, and frank humor?

Did rape crisis feminists such as Andrea Dworkin, who saw all sex as rape and presumed all men guilty, ruin what was otherwise a reasonable, egalitarian program for reform?

Or was the strain of man-blaming always there?

IS ex-follower goes on trial in Germany
[RUDAW.NET] A German national who says he repented and returned after joining the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) in Syria went on trial Friday, with prosecutors demanding a 10-year jail term.

Nazzat Ess, 22, returned to Germany in December after travelling to war-torn Syria earlier last year.

"The defendant is accused of being a member of ISIS and has taken part in armed festivities in Syria after training with the group there," announced Andreas Vitek, the spokesperson of the Dusseldorf court.

During hearings on Thursday, Ess said he travelled to Syria to fight and had been asked to join ISIS, but decided not to after seeing "horrible scenes" and returning to Germany.

German prosecutors described the defendant's story as "unreliable" and said "strong suspicions" remained as to why the man returned home.

"Even the court has been suspicious about Nazzat's story and his claimed repentance," prosecutors said.

Ess, who is originally from Albania, was incarcerated

in December when he returned to Germany. Prosecutors have demanded a prison term up to 10 years.

Around 300 people face prosecution In Germany for supporting ISIS, according to German Justice Minister Heiko Maas, as anti-terrorism laws are being revised in the country.

Zarif: P5 1 Shifting Positions, Pressing Excessive Demands
[ALMANAR.LB] Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that the world powers engaged in Talks with Tehran over its nuclear program are shifting their positions and pressing excessive demands.

Marathon talks in the Austrian capital, Vienna, are nearing an endgame after two deadlines were missed in order for more negotiation to take place.Iranian Foriegn Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif

"Unfortunately, we are witnessing both shifts in positions and excessive demands... Several countries [which are members] in the P5+1 group hold different positions. Such issues have made the negotiations difficult. We want a dignified agreement and negotiations, and we will continue to negotiate. The deal would be within reach should the other side seek an honorable and balanced accord," Zarif said late on Thursday, Press TV reported.

"There are always new ideas on any negotiating table. It is important for everybody to stick to what we have already agreed, and to move forward based on that," he said when asked about new ideas being brought up in the talks and the differences among member states of the P5+1 group.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
an unnamed senior Iranian official said late on Thursday that Western powers are changing their positions in nuclear talks with the Islamic Theocratic Republic, warning that the negotiations could "go either way."

"We see certain changes in the positions particularly just last night... on a lot of issues unfortunately," the official said.

He noted that "there was an approach that was acceptable ... but then all of a sudden people came up with some view for changing ideas, and this makes it rather difficult."

FM Comments on Defection of N.Korean Officials
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's reign of terror is having a considerable impact on North Korean officials stationed overseas, several of whom have defected to South Korea, Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se said Thursday. Yun was speaking to a forum hosted by the Kwanhun Club, a fraternity of veteran journalists, in Seoul.

"Over the three-and-a-half years since Kim took power, about 70 officials have been executed," Yun said. "That’s a sevenfold increase from the same period during the Kim Jong-il regime."

"It's self-evident what will happen if the reign of terror intensifies, the economy worsens, and human rights are violated further," he added.

This Week In Guns, July 11th, 2015

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

Last week Bob Owens from Bearingarms.com interviewed Andrew Scott, CEO of A&A Ammunition, who said he was seeing signs of the .22 LR ammunition shortage beginning to clear up. I won't dispute what an executive says about his whole industry, because that is his bread and butter, but I commented elsewhere that .22 LR shortage was showing no signs of moderating, but you can still get it at about between .08 to .10 per round.

I said: ...online prices of .22LR halved between July 2013 and July 2014, and have wafted upwards about $0.02 per round. My personal opinion is that .22 LR will not go down significantly more than $0.02 each for a long time to come.

About three years ago I went shooting with my son in law, and we met a friend of his at the firing range in Florida. One individual was also there with a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum revolver, who kept getting misfires every other shot. At about $1.00 per round, that kind of shooting can run into some money. You must really love to fire a .44 Magnum to expend that kind of wampum. Now, three years later, the PPR for the .44 Magnum is half of what it was. Times change, but I suspect whatever price collapses may be in the offing, they have already come and gone.

I mentioned that story to say this: the SiL's friend had a .22LR pistol with a rifle stock and he kept loading it, with every round saying: One cent, two cents, 3 cents... all with a smirk on his face.

The .44 Magnum shooter musta been pissed.

The city of Seattle Washington wants to pass a $25 per transaction fee on all gun purchases. Helluva deal for them if everyone in Seattle wants to obey the universal background check law passed by popular vote last year in a marijuana induced fog. Why are they considering such a tax? Because no court in the land will deny any government any tax, not SCOTUS, nor anywhere else.

Judges gotta eat, too, when they retire.

That has been de riguer for a long time. Even fees for concealed carry in those states that have such a program, which so many people erroneously equate with their 2nd Amendment rights, could be considered taxes, which no court in the land will deny any political entity.

May their chains rest on them lightly...

Just my two kopeks.

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Prices for pistol ammunition and for rifle ammunition were mixed.

Prices for used pistols were mostly lower, while prices for used rifles were higher across the board.

Australian Navy Cancels Order for the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter
The Australian military has decided to cancel plans to purchase F-35B Joint Strike Fighter short-take-off-and-vertical landing aircraft and place 12 of the aircraft on two of their larger assault ships, citing the challenges of needing to rework the ships to accommodate the plane, according to published reports.

"Prime Minister Tony Abbott's proposal to put F-35 fighter jets on the Navy's two 27,000-tonne troop transport assault ships has been quietly dropped," writes The Australian Financial Review.

Somali troops end hotels siege in Mogadishu
MOGADISHU -- After one hour of fighting at two hotels in the Somali capital, Somali forces say they have killed the last of a group of heavily-armed Al-Shabab assailants who attacked Siyad and Weheliye hotels on Friday evening. Two hotel guards, one civilian and five militants died in the attack.

The assault underscores the potency of the Al-Shabab even after losing its key strongholds in offensive by African Union and Somali forces.

Al-Shabab claimed the responsibility for the attack, vowing more attacks during Ramadan, a month the group usually steps up attacks against government and African Union forces.

In recent weeks, security has been tightened across Mogadishu as government deployed hundreds of soldiers to prevent attacks by the Al-Qaeda linked Al-Shabab group.

Egypt's Al-Azhar condemns same-sex marriage campaign
[Al Ahram] Egypt's highest Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, has slammed what it called "a campaign by international powers and organizations," as well public figures in Egypt, to promote and legalise homosexuality.

In a statement released on Thursday, Al-Azhar rejected same-sex marriage, stating that marriage in Islam is only between a man and woman, and that Islam prohibits all "sinful" extramarital affairs, referring to the recent decision of the US Supreme Court to end the same-sex ban.

The Islamic institution also said it rejected all campaigns to spread or legalise homosexuality and same-sex marriage in the Moslem world. Many Social media users worldwide have declared support for same-sex marriage, launching "Rainbow avatars" and "#Lovewins" online campaigns.

Scientists warn the sun will 'go to sleep' in 2030
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK] The Earth could be headed for a 'mini ice age' researchers have warned.

A new study claims to have cracked predicting solar cycles - and says that between 2020 and 2030 solar cycles will cancel each other out.

This, they say, will lead to a phenomenon known as the 'Maunder minimum' - which has previously been known as a mini ice age when it hit between 1646 and 1715, even causing London's River Thames to freeze over.

[ALMANAR.LB] Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said on Friday that the threats by the United States to leave the nuclear talks are not serious, state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Referring to the rise of takfiri

Thusly, if you had a President on the order of the current Greek PM (admittedly nuts) make the Persians understand that if the negotiations fail we will most certainly nuke you the next day, AND MEAN IT. It is the way of the souk.

Iraq
Iraq's Shi'ite militias target Falluja in Anbar campaign
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Iraqi Shi'ite militia fighters are tightening a noose around the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
-held city of Falluja west of Baghdad as the first stage of a counter-offensive in the Sunni province of Anbar, likely to determine the course of the conflict in coming months.

Islamic State seized Anbar's capital Ramadi two months ago, extending its control over the Euphrates river valley west of Baghdad and dealing a major setback to Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the U.S.-backed army he entrusted with its defense.

While the government initially vowed to swiftly recapture Ramadi, it now appears to have turned instead to Falluja, a city located further downriver and closer to Baghdad, meaning supply lines for a counter-offensive would be less vulnerable.

Colonel Ali al-Yasiri, commander of Iraq's 4th armored regiment, 1st division, which is fighting near Falluja, said plans for a quick offensive to retake Ramadi were shelved in June after commanders concluded that Falluja would be "a dagger pointed at the army in Ramadi" unless it was tackled first.

"Our commanders gave us orders one week after losing Ramadi to regroup ... in order to launch a counter offensive to retake Ramadi," he told Rooters. "This decision failed to win support from all military commanders."

As the government seeks to claw back territory, Abadi has turned to the mainly Shi'ite Hashid Shaabi militia fighters who have proven more successful than the army on the ground.

In April, the militia recaptured the city of Tikrit, former dictator Saddam Hussein's home town on the Tigris river north of Baghdad. But until the fall of Ramadi in May, the government was reluctant to deploy the Shi'ite fighters west of Baghdad in the valley of Iraq's other great river, the Euphrates, where Sunni tribes have been hostile to outsiders for generations.

The army seems to be taking advantage of the extra capabilities offered by the militia umbrella group, which includes Iranian-backed elements. Yasiri welcomed the Hashid's involvement, saying the army had struggled unsuccessfully for 18 months to contain Sunni Death Eaters in Anbar.

Abadi and the army can also rely on U.S.-led air support, more closely coordinated since U.S. officers moved into a military base less than 10 miles (15 km) from Falluja and started overseeing training of Sunni tribal recruits there.

Jets and artillery have been pounding both Falluja and Ramadi, inflicting heavy daily casualties on forces of Evil and civilians alike according to medical sources.

MILITIA IN LEAD

Shi'ite militia figures say they will take the lead on the ground, not the army.

"Hashid forces are closing in on Daesh holy warriors inside Falluja after seizing almost all supply routes around the city," said Muen al-Kadhimi, a senior aide to Hadi al-Ameri, commander of the Iranian-backed Badr organization, the most powerful of Iraq's armed Shi'ite groups.

Shi'ite fighters and army troops have made gains north of Falluja this week, although they faced heavy resistance from Islamic State fighters who sent boom-mobiles to stem the advances. Authorities say they already control Falluja's eastern, southern and western approaches.

Tribal and bully boy sources in Anbar reported an Islamic State attack early on Friday in villages between Falluja and Ramadi, which lie about 40 km (25 miles) apart on the Euphrates. But their opponents insist the campaign to retake Anbar is on track.

"Now we are only 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the center of Falluja and the plan to liberate the city is going perfectly." said Kadhimi.

He confirmed the strategy of retaking Falluja before the bustling provincial capital: "We can't go to Ramadi first and leave our back exposed. This is why Falluja is a prior target."

Falluja saw the fiercest fighting of the U.S. occupation which followed Washington's 2003 invasion to topple Saddam Hussein, and has also been a center of Sunni hostility to the Shi'ite-led government in Baghdad.

The Anadolu Agency said three of the suspects detained in the simultaneous raids on Friday were foreign nationals who were planning to cross into Syria to join ISIS. Their nationalities weren't disclosed.

Other suspects were believed to have been working to recruit fighters for the group, the agency said.

Anadolu said police seized two rifles, large amounts of ammunition, documents and military uniforms during the raids.

Under pressure from its allies, Turkey has recently tightened security along its border with Syria in a bid to thwart Lions of Islam from crossing into the country to join the turbans.

Economy
Debt Headed to 103% of GDP
[CNSNEWS] Testifying in the U.S Senate yesterday, Congressional Budget Office Director Keith Hall warned that the publicly held debt of the U.S. government, when measured as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product, is headed toward a level the United States has seen only once in its history--at the end of World War II.

To simply keep the debt at the high historical level where it currently sits--74 percent of GDP--would require either significant increases in federal tax revenue or decreases in non-interest federal spending (or a combination of the two).

Historically, U.S. government debt as a percentage of GDP hit its peak in 1945 and 1946, when it was 104 percent and 106 percent of GDP respectively.

In 2015, the CBO estimates that the U.S. government debt will be 74 percent of GDP. That is higher than the 69-percent-of-GDP debt the U.S. government had in 1943--the second year after Pearl Harbor.

(ISIS) group is banning residents from performing prayers on one of the most important Moslem feasts, controversially claiming the practice does not belong in the religion.

Ismat Rajab, a Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) official for Mosul who now lives in the Kurdistan region, told Rudaw that the radical group has warned residents to avoid prayers for Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan in about a week.

He said ISIS was claiming that the Eid prayer is not "originally an Islamic practice" and was not performed in Prophet Mohammad's time.

Since the ISIS takeover of Mosul last year, the jihadis have been imposing new rules and regulations, backed by strict punishments that include the threat of death for offenders.

Eid al-Fitr, also called the Feast of Breaking the Fast, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Moslems worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting.

Although a religious practice, the prayer preformed on the first day after Ramadan also is a cultural event.

Algeria Arrests 38 over Deadly Ethnic Violence
[ALMANAR.LB] Algerian authorities nabbed
Please don't kill me!
38 people in connection with deadly ethnic unrest between Berbers and Arabs in the south of the country, police and the gendarmerie said Friday.

Police also said a hunting rifle, dozens of knives and Molotov cocktails were seized during a probe into unrest in the southern province of Ghardaia that left 22 people dead on Tuesday.

Police said 27 people were tossed into the calaboose Thursday "for harming public order, citizen's security and property."

State television, citing the gendarmerie, said 11 more people were rounded up, bringing the total to 38.

Algerian media reported that masked gunnies went on a killing and arson spree in the town of Guerara Tuesday night and into the early hours of Wednesday.

Guerara is in the M'zab valley, a UNESCO world heritage site on the edge of the Sahara desert, where tensions between Mozabite Berbers and Arabs have flared on and off since December 2013.

But it was the first time firearms were used in confrontations between members of the two communities.

Kenya to speed up construction of Somalia border walls
The Kenyan government has said it will hasten the construction of a security wall along its porous border with Somalia following the Mandera terror attack that left 14 people dead earlier this week.
Fences don't work. Ask the Israelis...
Interior Principal Secretary Monica Juma said the government is more determined in securing the border with Somalia and keep off ‘al-Shabaab’ militants from freely crossing into the country.

“The attack in Mandera validates the importance to secure our borders.

“The threat by ‘al-Shabaab’ is upon us and I want to reaffirm our resolve to secure our nation,” Juma said when she led an inter-agency team on a site inspection at border Point One in Mandera.

She said the building of the 700 kilometer wall on the Kenya-Somalia border from Mandera in northeast to Kiunga in the coast will keep out the ‘al-Shabaab’ elements from infiltrating the country.

Mandera town is situated at the Somali border and stretches for about 20 kilometers from Border Point One, making it prone to frequent terrorist attacks.

During the inspection, Juma called on the residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious characters to the relevant security authorities. She said that the disaster operation center in Nairobi is in contact with the affected families to ensure that all the assistance they require is provided for.

She also added that the eight people seriously injured in the dawn attack who are admitted at Kenyatta national hospital will receive counseling and other recovery programs from the center.

Turkey Permits Using Base for Syria Drone Strikes: Report
[ALMANAR.LB] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has reportedly agreed to allow the United States to use one of its airbases to launch Arclight airstrikes in Syria allegedly to target ISIL Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
hard boys.

This comes as US General John Allen, US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Christine Wormuth, along with a large delegation from the Pentagon, traveled to Ankara this week to meet with their Turkish counterparts, English-language Turkish newspaper Today's Zaman reported.Turkey Permits Using Base for Syria Drone Strikes

Meetings between the two sides started on Tuesday and continued through Wednesday and Thursday.

On Thursday, Turkey's Cumhuriyet daily reported that Ankara had agreed to allow US drones at Incirlik airbase to be used against ISIL murderous Moslems in Syria.

The newspaper further said that Washington had also demanded to have access to military bases in Diyarbakir and Batman for logistical purposes, adding that the two countries are close to clinching a deal on Incirlik airbase, but Ankara wants the US to support foreign-backed gunnies fighting against the Syrian government as a precondition.

Turkey also told the US that it should include the fight against the Syrian government in its train and equip program, according to Cumhuriyet.
However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
a report by Daily Sabah said the deployment of the armed drones to Incirlik is nothing new.

"These reports do not reflect the truth. Armed drones were not discussed. In fact, they are already in use, so there is no need to discuss the issue, which has already been solved," the newspaper quoted a high-level source from the Turkish Foreign Ministry as saying.

"The agreement between Turkey and the US to use armed drones was reached in March and they have been in use since then," a military source added.

#1  Only recently the Pentagon data on sorties in Iraq and Syria has included mention of drones. It was assumed that the drones were based north of Irbil in Kurdistan. The US has had an on-again off-again relationship re Incirlik, but it once was a US drone base. Incirlik is a dominant location for drone activity in western Syria. Thus, what it will be used for, except to pull Turkey from a tight spot, needs explanation.

Zarif to P5 1: Never Threaten an Iranian
[ALMANAR.LB] Sources close to the nuclear talks underway between Iran and the world powers in Vienna said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has warned European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini to avoid threatening Iran, Fars news agency reported.

Russian sources said on Wednesday that the atmosphere of the talks soured somehow a few days ago during a meeting between Zarif and Mogherini, the minister of the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, Britannia and La Belle France plus Germany).

"And then at some stage, when the Iranian officials seriously defended their positions, Mogherini warned to leave the talks, saying the negotiations couldn't go on and every one had better return home as long as the conditions prevailing over the meeting continued," the diplomat added.

"Zarif immediately replied, telling Mogherini "never threaten an Iranian!", followed by his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov who said "or a Russian!".

Iran and the 6 world powers are in the final phase of their last round of talks in Vienna to draft a final deal to end their over-a-decade-long nuclear standoff.

Iran's deputy lead negotiator Abbas Araqchi said on Tuesday his country and the six world powers won't have a deal as long as the US is adamant in its decision to maintain the sanctions policy.

The deputy chief negotiator pointed out that there have only remained "7 to 10 issues of difference between Iran and the G5+1, and explained that "only 2 or 3 of them are fundamental and important".

"The rest are minor technical issues" which are not that much important, Araqchi continued.

The Geneva interim deal envisaged the removal of all the UN and unilateral US and EU sanctions against Iran under a final comprehensive deal.

Also, in a framework agreement approved by the six powers and Iran in April known as the Lausanne Statement, the seven nations agreed that a final deal would include removal of all sanctions as well as a UN Security Council resolution which would call all the five UNSC sanctions resolutions imposed against Iran's nuclear activities as "null and void".

The first two UNSC resolutions boycotted export of military, specially missile, hardware and software to Iran, a sanction that would be automatically removed under the new UNSC resolution that, according to the Lausanne framework agreement, should be issued on the same day that the final deal is endorsed.

India-Pakistan
Some 7/7 thoughts
[DAWN] WITH the passage of time, even important events begin to resemble a dot fading fast in the rear-view mirror. It is surprising, then, that sometimes a trigger can lead to a detailed, vivid recollection of an event from many, many years ago and create shockwaves even today.

We were in London last week and were leaving our rented flat when traffic congestion, just a few yards up on Upper Woburn Place by Tavistock Square diverted our attention to a remembrance happening in the square to mark the 10th anniversary of the London bombings which became known as 7/7.

That remembrance with some officials, the family and friends of the victims and quite a few passers-by in attendance became a trigger for a flood of memories of July 7, 2005. On that day, from our south London home, I was driving to Bush House (in Aldwych, Central London) where I worked for the BBC World Service.

As usual, the morning drive was accompanied by radio news. It must have been around 9.30 when a news flash caught my attention. It said there had been a 'power surge' on the London Underground, the network had been shut down and the travelling public was being advised not to head towards the Underground without first checking all was back to normal.

We had the usual quota of summer visitors who were planning to head to town for some 'sightseeing' (read shopping), so I called home to ensure they checked before leaving as it is never pleasant to be stranded outside.

Having finished the call, and on reaching the Bush House car park, as I got out, I heard what sounded like an kaboom not very far off and the ground also seemed to shake a bit. But the din of traffic made me think my mind was playing tricks. So I walked into the building and took the lift to my office.

This is when the first details started to trickle in that there had been three bombings on the London Underground network and a fourth on a bus just a couple of hundred metres south of Euston Station on Upper Woburn Place on the road sandwiched between the British Medical Association and Tavistock Square.

With all the facts known much later, it was a chilling realisation that what I'd heard was actually the teenaged bomber on the bus detonating his explosives-filled backpack barely a mile and a half in a straight line from where I stood, sending several people to a violent death.

The bus blast was preceded by three near-simultaneous bomb kabooms (later three of them were attributed to jacket wallahs of Pak origin) on the network between King's Cross-Russell Square stations, Liverpool Street-Aldgate stations and at Edgware Road station, killing more than 50 people and injuring scores of others, some so grievously they'd have to live with disability for the rest of their lives.

As journalists, all of us got busy in covering the story and didn't realise till much later that the victims of that carnage were so representative of London itself, comprising the widest variety of origins, faiths, ethnicities, castes and creeds.

It was after these attacks, and several unsuccessful ones reportedly prevented by the security services, that most Londoners first caught sight of specialist firearms officers as coppers wearing sidearms and carrying submachine guns appeared on the scene.

While the events of 9/11 in the distant US did create anxiety and some racial tension in the UK, which scarred some close friends and colleagues when they were set upon by racist goons blaming them for the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now beyond all cares and woe...
's mayhem, things settled down pretty quickly.

It was, therefore, natural for similar anxieties to surface post 7/7 and some Islamophobia
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
was in evidence. But, despite random incidents of violence and attacks, the anger on London streets never approached anywhere near the hatred the suicide bombers vented on people ostensibly for the Iraq war; in fact, many among the victims were opposed to it.

It is admittedly naïve to expect that gunnies would be so discriminating. They aren't. One need only look at Pakistain's example where more than 50,000 citizens who had nothing to do with the US presence in the region were made to suffer the terrorists' wrath.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
in the case of the UK, it seems the gunnies who targeted Britons in London couldn't achieve what Wall Street bankers and their European counterparts, whose unaccountable greed and actions plunged the world into an economic meltdown, did.

Of course, coupled with the aura the self-styled Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
's slick social media wing has created around the terrorist organization with the help of gullible or callously complicit Western media groups, this has triggered ugly and often blatant xenophobia and racism.

Where in the past if one arrived with a Pak passport with a mere 'permanent residence' stamped on it, the immigration officers would often smile and say 'welcome home', now (non-white) naturalised British citizens are asked all sorts of outrageous questions such as 'how long do you plan to stay in the UK?'

In an environment where 'moderate' Moslem community leaders have been marginalised considerably in terms of their influence on some among the younger generation enamoured by the lure of IS; and where the 'other side' is now increasingly being hijacked by the xenophobic UKIP's thinking with even the governing Tories playing catch-up, the future doesn't look rosy.

All hope, however, isn't lost as a young woman university student of Asian origin recently told me. "Our reality is very different. Our generation is growing up in multiethnic/cultural Britannia. We are much more at ease with each other. Most of this nonsense will disappear when we take charge -- actually even before that -- wait and see how tensions dissipate when the economy and the job situation gets better."

Iraq
Kurdish official confirms coordination with Arab countries to counter ISIS
[RUDAW.NET] A high-ranking Iraqi Kurdish official confirmed that several Arab countries are closely cooperating with the Kurds to counter the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIL) group, as the region loses faith in the US-led campaign against the murderous Moslems.

Hemen Hawrami, a close advisor to Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani, refused to name the Arab countries that are "directly coordinating" with the Kurds.

"Based on their wish, we will not reveal their names. But yes, several Arab countries are in close coordination with us to counter ISIS" he said, speaking to Rudaw at the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
headquarters in New York.

Last week, Britannia's The Telegraph newspaper quoted a bigwig from an Arab country that is part of the US-led coalition against ISIS as saying that regional countries are ready to take the war against the snuffies into their own hands.

"If the Americans and the West are not prepared to do anything serious about defeating ISIL, then we will have to find new ways of dealing with the threat,"the newspaper quoted the unidentified official as saying.

He said that the "new way of dealing with the ISIL threat" is directly arming the Kurds in Iraq.

Directly arming the Kurds contravenes official US policy, which insists that all arms to the autonomous Kurds should go through the central government in Baghdad.

Kurdish forces in Iraq and Syria have been the only bulwarks on the ground against further ISIS expansion in those countries.

Hawrami did not deny that the US had tried to block direct arms supplies to the Iraqi Kurds by Arab allies.

The Kurdistan Region's Peshmerga forces, locked in war with ISIS for nearly a year, complain of delays in US-supplied arms reaching them via Baghdad, and that they remain seriously outgunned by the murderous Moslems.

The US strategy of air strikes against ISIS, without any US or Western troops on the ground, has come under serious scrutiny, especially since the snuffies captured the city of Ramadi in Iraq and Palmyra in Syria in late May.

Senior Shaboobs discussing allegiance to ISIL
Strong horse, forsworn vows. But it still won't bring victory when Allah prefers the local unbelievers as evidenced by the win/loss tally.
JILIB, Somalia -- Senior Al Shabaab officials including its Chief Abu Ubaidah have been discussing loyalty to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) amid military setbacks on frontlines in central and southern Somalia, sources familiar with the matter told Garowe Online.

Abu Ubaidah is believed to have eased his stance towards ISIL, and told militant ideologues to cut off ties with al-Qaeda and its leader Ayman al-Zawihiri.

The gathering is underway in the town of Jilib , some 97km north of the southern port city of Kismayo. The tight secrecy of the meeting made details more convoluted, with sources telling GO that Mahad Karate, Ubu Ubaidah’s deputy agreed to the allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) which is seeking to extend its influence into East Africa.

“This is not strange, and it seems that Al Shabaab could be following in the footsteps of Boko Haram at the height of dire funds shortage, and blistering loss of grounds against allied forces,” said an analyst who asked not to be named.

Al Shabaab merged with al-Qaeda in 2012. Eversince, militants have been adhering to apostasy principles and the communications style of the network.

In March, ISIL leader reportedly sent invitation to Al Shabaab Chief Abu Ubaidah, encouraging the Somali militant group to wage Jihad on neighboring countries, notably Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania.

Boko Haram fighters aligned themselves with ISIL in early March in well produced audio message posted online.

If the discussion succumbs to ISIL loyalty, analysts predict unparalleled shuttle of foreign Jihadists.

Iraqi troops, militias repel IS attack on town in Anbar

group attack Friday that left 10 soldiers dead in western Iraq's Anbar province, officials said.

The Lions of Islam attacked the government-held town of Khalidiyah with mortars and five suicide boom-mobiles, Anbar councilman Athal al-Fahdawi said. They retreated after an hours-long battle, leaving behind 12 dead fighters. Some were hiding in houses in nearby Abu Flais village, Al-Fahdawi said.

Police and army officers said at least 10 soldiers were killed. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wrecked scow, Agent 49 felt gingerly for his head. It was still there. He had been hoping differently...
the Islamic State group's Radio al-Bayan said IS Lions of Islam seized positions in the Khalidyah area after attacking Iraqi troops and Shiite militias with boom-mobiles.

Iraqi forces, backed by Shiite militias, have been struggling to recapture areas lost to IS in the country's west and north. In May, the bad boy group scored a stunning victory when it overran Ramadi in Anbar province, capturing large amounts of ammunition and armored vehicles from fleeing government troops.

Also Friday, a representative for Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq's top Shiite holy man, urged countries in the region to take "decisive measures" to stop the flow of imported muscle into Iraq.

"The continuation of the policy of carelessness and giving a blind eye on the flow of these fighters to Iraq will increase the danger of these gangs to Iraq and they will represent a threat to their countries," Abdul-Mahdi al-Karbalei said during a Friday sermon in the city of Karbala.

Foreign fighters have been streaming into Syria and Iraq by the thousands to join IS and other krazed killer groups.

400 officers defected Syrian army last January, mostly high ranks: leaked list
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Zaman al-Wasl has obtained an exclusive list of members defected from the regime's forces, soldiers and non-commissioned officers, were reported in the beginning of this year. Surprisingly, dozens of the defected members were from areas of complete sectarian loyalty to the Syrian regime.

The other warning point of the new lists of is that many of the defected members were from the elite groups like the elite republican guards and the defence brigades and special forces, who were the carefully selected, armed and trained groups, and their commanders were very trusted and close to Bashar and Maher al-Assad.

The lists contained 1017 names, defected from different military battalions, brigades and troops, dozens of them from the Alawite sect.

Moreover, many of defected names were of prominent and well known Alawite families and like Khadour, Slitin, Omran, Reedi, Salhab, Wasouf, Jdid, Saqer, Hmesheh and Rahija, and others.

The first list showed that 422 members defected from the regime forces, in January 2015, 73 sergeant and first sergeant, 46 corporal, making about 30% of all defected members, at 13 one daily average, the highest number was in 4th January at 33 member, almost no day passed without defection, that refutes the regime's claims that defections has become rare and at individual bases.

Defection among the elite republican guard despite the privileges they have, and the military intelligence, who are responsible to observe soldiers and officers and prevent any defection attempt, gives an idea about the weakness and cracks in within the Syrian regime.

Another serious issue the lists have shown that 70 members have defected with their arms, indicting the level of drainage in the regime forces at military and human levels.
However the most serious piece of information of the recent list of defected members was the ability to know the bases of defected members.

Details of defection numbers of the Elite Units and the Republican guard in January 2015:

Troop 101 and troop 102 of the Republican Guard, 33 members and 16 members respectively.

62 members defected from troop 104, and 40 members of troop 105, the strongest troop of the elite republican guard, and its commander, Monaf Tlas, the close friend of al-Assad defected in 2012.

Troop 106 had 42 members reported as defected. Troop 124 of Elite Republican Guards had 20 defected members, while 20 members left troop 47 of the special forces.

Arabia
Saudi Manipulating World Media with Petro-Dollars: Report
[ALMANAR.LB] Riyadh has been paying media across the globe as well as setting plans to ban news hounds critical of the government from working in the country in a bid to project a positive image of the kingdom, Reporters Without Borders concluded, citing newly leaked Saudi diplomatic documents.

The so called 'Saudi Cables' were revealed by the whistle-blower website, WikiLeaks, with most of them dating back to between 2010 and 2015.

The non-governmental organization cites numerous examples including Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
looking to fund media publications from around the globe -- from Iran to Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
"While it is not always clear from the cables what was actually done, they expose the extraordinary initiatives that were at least considered by the Saudi government in an attempt to improve its image abroad," Reporters Without Borders (RSF) wrote on their website.

The report highlighted methods used by Riyadh to promote its own interests, among them channeling funds to media organizations all over the world, as was the case in 2011 with the Wesal Farsi TV (now called Tawhid), a London-based Persian-language television station with anti-Iran agendas.

"In 2011, for example, the Saudi embassy in London suggested funding Wesal Farsi TV (now called Tawhid), a London-based, Persian-language TV station owned by a Sunni Iranian citizen opposed to his country's government. In return for monthly funding and allowing Saudi Arabia to appoint a representative to its board of governors, the TV station would respond to Iranian media criticism of Saudi Arabia," the report said.

The cables also highlight how some media organizations would actually approach the Saudi's themselves for funding. Reporters Without Borders cites the example of the Afghan media center Spogmai. Its head requested funding in 2009 for the creation of a news website, a daily newspaper, a magazine and a TV station that would act as counterweights to Afghan media outlets, which were funded by rivals Iran.

Not all media outlets are willing to be bought, but the Saudi government seems to have a solution for those not interested in petrol dollars, RSF said.

It also went on to say that another practice applied by Riyadh was to ban news hounds critical of the government from working in the country.

The report cited what happened recently to the London-based Financial Times newspaper, which had to withdraw its correspondent and close its Riyadh bureau for publishing what the Saudi government called "lies" about the kingdom.

Touching on the role of Saudi missions in Riyadh's dictated media coverage, the report concluded, "The embassies play a dynamic role in organizing and maintaining active pro-Saudi propaganda abroad. As they are familiar with the local media, they are best placed to monitor what the media are saying and to make suggestions to the Saudi government."

Tunisian security forces kill five militants in mountain region: source
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] Tunisian security forces have killed five Islamist hard boyz in festivities in the mountains near the central town of Gafsa, and military helicopters were pursuing more in the area, a security source said on Friday.

Tunisian forces are on high alert after last month's attack on a beach resort that killed 38 holidaymakers, most of them British, and the Bardo museum massacre by Islamist gunnies three months earlier.

"The operation is still ongoing in the Awled Omrane mountains," the source said, adding that there had been no casualties among army special forces.

Tunisia PM to Ring Cameron over Call for Tourists to Leave
[ALMANAR.LB] Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid said he would telephone British counterpart David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
on Friday to respond to his government's advice that the North African nation was unsafe for holidays.

The Foreign Office guidance issued on Thursday evening forced British tour operators to halt all holidays to Tunisia in a massive blow to a key sector of its economy.

Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid"We will ring the British prime minister to tell him we have done everything we can to protect all British interests and those of others countries -- that's out duty," Esebsi told a late-night session of parliament.

"Britannia is free to take whatever decision it likes -- it's a sovereign country -- but we too are a sovereign country and we have a position to take."

Essid did not elaborate on what that position might be but he told politicians that the British decision would "have repercussions."

Tunisia has brought in a raft of new security measures, including arming tourist police, since a Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
gunman killed 38 foreign holidaymakers, 30 of them Britons, at the beach resort of Port El Kantaoui on June 26.

But the Foreign Office said it did not believe they provided "adequate protection" and advised against all but essential travel.

Within minutes of the advice, tour operators Thomson and First Choice said they had cancelled all flights to Tunisia for the rest of the season, until October 31.

Britannia's largest travel association, ABTA, said the 3,000 or so British tourists currently in Tunisia would be flown home as soon as possible.

Ethiopian troops advance on Al Shabaab-held town
BARDERA, Somalia -- Hundreds of Ethiopian soldiers in battle tanks have advanced towards strategic Bardera town in southwestern Somalia by Thursday, Garowe Online reports. Ethiopian troops crossed the border to intensify anti-militant push and liberate areas remaining under the control of Al Shabaab fighters.

The military maneuver comes in reaction at a series of seizures made by militants since the start of the holy month of Ramadan. Somalia government and Jubaland officials previously pointed to fresh military offensives against Al Shabaab.

Sierra Leonean peacekeepers headed home from their positions in Jubaland in the aftermath of Ebola in late 2014. African Union forces in Bay, Bakool and Gedo regions have similar moves.
