13 people shot in Chicago over 11 hours, including 2 triple shootings
[Chicago Tribune] Thirteen people were shot in Chicago over 11 hours between Wednesday evening and early Thursday, including two triple-shootings on the West Side, according to police.

A man between 45 and 50 was found shot to death in the 11100 block of South Ashland Avenue in the Morgan Park neighborhood around 5 a.m. Thursday, police said. He had been shot several times and pronounced dead on the scene, a vacant lot on a residential street.

In the Pilsen neighborhood, a 41-year-old man was seriously wounded about 1 a.m. Thursday in the 1900 block of South Peoria Street, police said.

A woman, who did not want to be identified, woke up early Thursday to the sound of gunshots. She looked outside, saw a man on the sidewalk and called 911. After police arrived, she went outside and gave the man a glass of water after he said he was thirsty.

Paramedics lifted the man, who had been shot in the chest, and placed him on a stretcher. He held onto his cellphone as the paramedics put into the ambulance. He was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital.

A man who had been with the victim declined to comment.

On the West Side, there were two triple shootings within four hours Wednesday.

Three men were shot about 11:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Avers Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood.

A 38-year-old man was shot in the left shoulder, and another 38-year-old man was shot in the right arm, police said. A 33-year-old man was shot in the right foot. Their conditions were stabilized at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Communists Funding the Resistance: The Alliance for Global Justice
[Capital Research Center] During the salad days of the Cold War, communists developed a clever tactic for infiltrating the mainstream of American society. Whenever they founded an organization, they almost never used the term "Communist" in the name. Rather, communists would give the organization a professional-sounding title.

Groups like American Youth for Democracy, League of American Writers, and National Lawyers Guild were either fronts for the Soviet Union or established by American-born communists. By using an innocuous title, these groups were able to make themselves appealing to mainstream America. Avoiding the term Communist, they were able to hide their true aim, the spread of an ideology that destroyed liberty and caused the deaths of tens of millions of persons.

After the Cold War, communists replaced the veneer of professionalism in their titles with a hefty dollop of sanctimony. Otherwise, the tactic is the same: employ a name that, on its face, few will find objectionable and that hides the group’s true goals.

One of the better known such groups is International Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER). This group came to prominence during the Iraq War of the last decade. ANSWER is an umbrella group that organizes anti-war protests. About the only objection one could have was to point out how sanctimonious its name was.

The 2016 Election is Not Reversible
h/t Instapundit
[AmGreatness] Today, the bipartisan ruling class, which the electorate was trying to shed by supporting anti-establishment candidates of both parties in 2016, feels as if it has dodged the proverbial bullet. The Trump administration has not managed to staff itself--certainly not with anti-establishment people--and may never do so. Because the prospect of that happening brought the ruling class’s several elements together and energized them as never before, today, prospects of more power with fewer limits than ever eclipse the establishment’s fears of November 2016.

But the Left’s celebrations are premature, at best. As I explained a year ago, by 2016 the ruling class’s dysfunctions and the rest of the country’s resentment had pushed America over the threshold of a revolution; one in which the only certainty is the near impossibility of returning to the republican self-government of the previous two centuries. The 2016 election is not reversible, because it was but the first stage of a process that no one can control and the end of which no one can foresee.

Judge Orders FBI To Make Details Of Clinton Email Probe Public
h/t Instapundit
A federal judge ordered the FBI Thursday to publicly release previously unseen documents related to the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.

U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg ordered the FBI to produce uncensored court documents describing the grand jury subpoenas issued to force Clinton’s internet service providers to turn over information related to her private server use, according to a statement released by Cause of Action Institute.

The ruling was made in response to a motion filed in June as part of a suit brought by Cause of Action Institute and Judicial Watch. The organizations claim the Department of State violated the Federal Records Act by failing to maintain records related to Clinton’s handling of classified information.

Trump to cut pay raises for government workers
h/t Instapundit
President Trump sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Thursday announcing his intention to cut pay raises for civilian government workers.

In the letter, Trump cited his authority in times of "national emergency or serious economic conditions affecting the general welfare" to make adjustments to the 2018 pay schedule for federal employees.

Under the previous plan, workers were scheduled for a 1.9 percent bump. Trump will use his authority to lower that to 1.4 percent.

"We must maintain efforts to put our Nation on a sustainable fiscal course," Trump wrote.

"A pay increase of this magnitude is not warranted, and Federal agency budgets could not accommodate such an increase while still maintaining support for key Federal priorities such as those that advance the safety and security of the American people."

Pay raises for government workers outside of Washington, D.C., will average only 0.5 percent and will be specified in a coming executive order, Trump said.

Has voodoo been misjudged? The BBC Explains
[BBC] While many African traditions and cultures are under threat from modern life, there is one which is holding its own - voodoo.

It has suffered from a bad press internationally but is an official religion in the West African country of Benin. In the voodoo heartland of Ouidah, the sound of drums fills the air, while men and women dressed mainly in white take turns to dance around a bowl of millet, a freshly slaughtered chicken and alcohol.

These are the day's offering at the Temple of Pythons. They have an audience of about 60 people who have gathered from nearby towns for an annual cleansing ceremony.

Inside the temple, where more than 50 snakes are slithering around a custom-made pit, local devotees make amends for sins of the past year.

Blood, snakes and power.

In voodoo, the python is a symbol of strength - the devotees explain they are relying on Dagbe, the spirit whose temple this is, to give them the power to change. And to make that change happen, blood must be spilled.

Google demands article be removed or lost revenue
[PJMedia] On Tuesday evening, Google sent a conservative website an ultimatum: remove one of your articles, or lose the ability to make ad revenue on your website. The website was strong-armed into removing the content, and then warned that the page was "just an example and that the same violations may exist on other pages of this website."

"Yesterday morning, we received a very bizarre letter from Google issuing us an ultimatum," Shane Trejo, media relations director of the Republican Liberty Caucus of Michigan, wrote on The Liberty Conservative. "Either we were to remove a particular article or see all of our ad revenues choked off in an instant. This is the newest method that Big Brother is using to enforce thought control."
So Google is now the ministry of truth.
The ultimatum came in the form of an email from Google's ad placement service AdSense. The email specifically listed an article on The Liberty Conservative's site, stating that the article violated AdSense's policies.

"As stated in our program policies, Google ads may not be placed on pages that contain content that: Threatens or advocates harm on oneself or others; Harasses, intimidates or bullies an individual or group of individuals; Incites hatred against, promotes discrimination of, or disparages an individual or group on the basis of their race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, age, nationality, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or other characteristic that is associated with systemic discrimination or marginalization," the email stated.
But Antifa and BLM websites are a-OK right? Just want to make it clear what is what.
The email warned The Liberty Conservative that it must either remove ads from that page, or "modify or remove the violating content to meet our AdSense policies."

"Please be aware that if additional violations are accrued, ad serving may be disabled to the website listed above," the AdSense email warned. "Please be aware that the URL above is just an example and that the same violations may exist on other pages of this website or other sites that you own."
Translation: Big Brother is watching you!
I have to wonder of the people placing the Ads is aware that Google is doing this.

Mueller Enlists the IRS for His Trump-Russia Investigation
[Daily Beast] Special counsel Bob Mueller has teamed up with the IRS. According to sources familiar with his investigation into alleged Russian election interference, his probe has enlisted the help of agents from the IRS’ Criminal Investigations unit.

This unit--known as CI--is one of the federal government’s most tight-knit, specialized, and secretive investigative entities. Its 2,500 agents focus exclusively on financial crime, including tax evasion and money laundering. A former colleague of Mueller’s said he always liked working with IRS’ special agents, especially when he was a U.S. Attorney.

And it goes without saying that the IRS has access to Trump’s tax returns--documents that the president has long resisted releasing to the public.

Potential financial crimes are a central part of Mueller’s probe. One of his top deputies, Andy Weissmann, formerly helmed the Justice Department’s Enron probe and has extensive experience working with investigative agents from the IRS.

"From the agents, I know everyone has the utmost respect for both Mueller and Weissmann," said Martin Sheil, a retired IRS Criminal Investigations agent.

And he said Mueller and Weissmann are known admirers of those agents’ work.

"They view them with the highest regard," Sheil said. "IRS special agents are the very best in the business of conducting financial investigations. They will quickly tell you that it took an accountant to nab Al Capone, and it’s true."

25 elite Syrian troops repel assault by 350 ISIS militants in ‘Uqayribat pocket

[AlMasdar] According to the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) elite ISIS Hunters unit operating in central Syria, a disproportionately small number of their forces repelled a large Islamic State counteroffensive at a key town near the provincial borders of Homs and Hama Governorates in the ‘Uqayribat pocket.

According to the ISIS Hunters, some twenty-five of their troops stationed at the town of Mashrifah in north-central Homs came under attack by 350 ISIS terrorists during the late night hours of Wednesday through till Thursday and managed to successfully turn it back.

If the claim is in fact anywhere near the truth, then there can be no doubt that the elite SAA unit was supported by constant Russian airstrikes since only Russian airpower has the technological means to carry out precision night attacks.

Earlier today, key formations of the Syrian Army – including the 5th Assault Corps and the 4th Mechanized Division – officially liberated six major towns from ISIS, trapping the terrorist group’s forces in a second encirclement within the greater ‘Uqayribat pocket area.

Syrian Army creates new ISIS pocket in east Hama after liberating 6 major towns

[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has liberated six major towns from besieged ISIS militants throughout eastern Hama Governorate in a mammoth advance that has been ongoing since yesterday.

As of today, the Syrian Army has secured the towns of al-Mashrifah, al-Hafiya and al-Zarouniyah located to the southeast of the regional Islamic State stronghold of ‘Uyaqribat, whilst also liberating the settlements of Qastal Shamali, Qastal Wistani and Qastal Janoubi to ‘Uyaqribat’s northeast.

The advance was led by the 5th Assault Corps – including the elite ISIS Hunters detachment – as well as key elements of the veteran 4th Mechanized Division and was achieved after a number high-pitched battles with ISIS fighters.

By this advance, the Syrian Army has de facto created a second envelopment of already besieged ISIS forces in eastern Hama Governorate. The new encirclement exists to the northeast of ‘Uyaqribat and consists of about ten ISIS-held settlements there within.

SAA liberate 4 towns from IS in eastern Hama: video

[AlMasdar] Units of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) recaptured four towns in eastern Hama province, Tuesday, as they advanced within 10 kilometres (6.21 miles) of the self-proclaimed Islamic State’s (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) regional stronghold at ‘Uqayribat.’

Footage shows units of the SAA engaged in clashes with militants near the village of Salba.

The SAA reportedly managed to liberate the towns of Haddaj, Rasm Zainab, Tahmaz and Bir Ghazaleh.

ISIS claims it killed another Russian soldier in east Hama, second in 24 hours

[AlMasdar] The ISIS terrorist group is claiming that its fighters have killed yet another Russian soldier in eastern Hama Governorate amid ongoing battles with pro-government forces there.

ISIS media claims that the soldier was killed at the town of Mashirfah about two kilometers from the Islamic State’s regional stronghold of ‘Uqayribat. This is the same location where the first Russian soldier was said to be slain.

The ISIS-linked Amaq news group released an image yesterday of the what it claims to be the second Russian solider killed by Islamic State forces in eastern Hama, however, Al-Masdar News is not allowed to release the photo per a recent policy on the sharing of static images showing dead pro-government fighters.

The picture released by Amaq is, in the eyes of some analysts, highly questionable. The deceased soldier is shown to have a beard (forbidden in the Russian military) and very old Soviet-style equipment which puts him more in the realm of a native Syrian National Defence Forces fighter than a Russian military advisor.

Syrian Army takes over strategic mountain en route to Deir Ezzor

[AlMasdar] Having fully recaptured the town of Sukhnah in east Homs countryside and secured the surrounding areas, the Syrian Army has officially entered the administrative borders of Deir Ezzor.

According to an informed military source, the government troops imposed full control over the strategic Bishiri mountain located to the west of Deir Ezzor city.

The mountain is strategically important as it overlooks Kobajjep and Ash-Shola; two towns located on the road from Sukhna to Deir Ezzor which also serve as major bastions for the Islamic State.

The same source added that the blitz – led by the SAA’s elite Tiger Forces – has killed and injured dozens of the jihadi militants.

Meantime, the Russian jets conducted several airstrikes against ISIS outposts and fortification in and around the mountain.

VIDEO: Syrian airpower flattens ISIS command base in Deir Ezzor

[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) has carried out a precision airstrike against an ISIS command base in Deir Ezzor city, completely destroying it. The raid, from beginning to end, was captured on video by unknown pro-government fighters who were clearly aware of when and where the strike was going to take place.

According to reports, the SyAAF airstrike was conducted in the ISIS-occupied al-Rashdiyah district of Deir Ezzor against a building identified by local intelligence to be a headquarters for the terrorist group’s forces in the city.

Sources also say that about a dozen ISIS fighters were killed and injured as a result of the raid and that at least two field commanders of the jihadist faction were present in the targeted building at the time of it being hit.

For a better understanding of the situation in and around Deir Ezzor, click here to see an interactive map.

Syrian Army, allies liberate key village from ISIS in central Homs

[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies continue to advance against ISIS in central Homs, today liberating a key village and putting themselves in position to create a second envelopment of the terrorist group’s already besieged forces within the ever-shrinking ‘Uqayribat pocket.

Early today, the Syrian troops secured al-Wahabiyah village which is located five kilometers to the west of Manukh town. Pro-government forces were able to take the settlement after a brief firefight with ISIS.

According the military sources, pro-government forces are looking to separate ISIS militants in central Homs from those in eastern Hama Governorate.

At the very least, pro-government forces hope that the threat of being double-besieged inside a single pocket will entice ISIS fighters to retreat north to eastern Hama, allowing the SAA to liberate central Homs without too much of a fight.

(FSA) in the southeastern countryside of Damascus, tonight, following a deal between the latter and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) to exchange prisoners.

According to Al-Masdar field correspondent, Ibrahim Joudeh, the 30 military personnel released in the deal were members of the border guards that were previously deployed along the Jordanian crossings.

Joudeh added that the 30 soldiers were released along the Sweida-Damascus axis, where they were welcomed by a large army party that included the head of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence in Al-Sweida, Wafiq Nasser.

Captured Syrian pilot freed by FSA in southeast Damascus

[AlMasdar] The Syrian pilot, ‘Ali Al-Helo, who was shot down by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the southeastern countryside of Damascus two weeks ago has now been released, according to a report from the Syrian military.

Helo was freed as part of a prisoner exchange deal that required the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) to release several Free Syrian Army militants that were in their jails.

A Syrian government source stated that Helo is now being transferred to the Tishreen Hospital, where he will receive necessary medical assistance for his wounds sustained during his crash landing in southeast Damascus.

Jaysh Al-Islam, Syrian Army complete large prisoner exchange in East Ghouta

[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Jaysh Al-Islam have completed another large prisoner exchange in the East Ghouta region of Damascus after a deal was put in place earlier in the week.

According to the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Damascus, Jaysh Al-Islam released 24 government prisoners at the Al-Wafideen Crossing near the large town of Douma.

Among the 24 prisoners released by Jaysh Al-Islam were 16 men (mostly SAA soldiers), 4 women, and 4 children that were all imprisoned in the Islamist group’s East Ghouta jails.

No information was released about the number of prisoners released by the Syrian Arab Army.

Wednesday’s prisoner transfer between the Syrian Arab Army and Jaysh Al-Islam is the fourth exchange that has been completed this year in the East Ghouta region of Damascus.

fighters and their families seeking to reach a stronghold near the Iraqi border had turned and retreated deeper into Syrian-held areas after being blocked by air strikes.

"When I walked into this conference about an hour ago, the buses were on the move. They had turned and had driven back into regime held areas," Army Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend told news hounds via a video teleconference from Baghdad.

Townsend said forces from the US-led coalition had not attacked the convoy but had struck every Islamic State "fighter or vehicle that has tried to approach that convoy."

Belgian court holds man over 'terrorist offence' plan
[Ynet] Belgian authorities say they are keeping a 22-year-old man in jug on suspicion that he was planning to carry out a "terrorist offence."

The Federal Prosecutor's Office said Thursday that the Belgian man, identified only as Hajar A., was remanded in jug for a month by a court in the city of Liege.

The court issued an arrest warrant for the man on Aug. 25. He is charged with "having left national territory with a view to committing, in Belgium or abroad, a terrorist offence."

Rebels struggle to repel ISIS counteroffensive in south Daraa: videos

’s (FSA) Southern Front are new struggling to hold back a wide-sweeping counteroffensive that has since been conducted by jihadist affiliate.

The aforementioned rebel offensive was launched against ISIS in southwestern Daraa’s Yarmouk Basin area about one week ago. In the event, the FSA operation failed within hours and resulted in defending ISIS forces inflicting brutal losses on the ranks of rebel fighters.

Beginning about two days ago, ISIS bully boyz launched a counteroffensive hoping to capitalize on the lowered morale and perceived disarray of rebel forces opposing them.

Now something of a medium-intensity battle has broken out in southwestern Daraa with the FSA throwing in every thing it has ‐ tanks, gun trucks and artillery ‐ in an attempt to grind down the ISIS assault.

Yesterday, ISIS media claimed that its forces had killed twelve FSA and Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group) fighters as a result of the counteroffensive. If indeed the claim is true that Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham were killed, then this shows that other holy warrior groups in Daraa ‐ including jihadist ones ‐ are now fighting alongside the FSA against ISIS in the region.

Al-Qaeda slaughters entire rival militant family in Idlib, 20 killed inc. women, children
[AlMasdar] The al-Qaeda-linked Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) terrorist group has carried out a brutal massacre of a rival hard boy family in northern Idlib Governorate.

According to reports, HTS fighters recently stormed the rural town of Taladah and rounded up an entire family, some of whom were members of the Harakat Nour al-Din al-Zenki hard boy group, and then slaughtered them.

In the massacre that was, some 20 people including women and kiddies as well as 4 serving bully boyz of the al-Zenki faction were killed.

Opposition sources say that HTS specifically targeted this family because it was very vocal in its anti-HTS sentiment during the latest round of rebel infighting in Idlib.

After being part of the HTS alliance since its formation at the beginning of this year, Harakat Nour al-Din al-Zenki departed from the al-Qaeda-led jihadist conglomerate in late-July due to disillusionment over its blatant hostility towards other rebel groups (namely Ahrar al-Sham

There Are Way Too Many White Librarians These Days, New Report Finds
[Daily Caller] A new report on diversity among library employees at America’s four-year colleges and universities has concluded that there are entirely too many white librarians.

Ithaka S+R, an academic research firm, released the "Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity" report on Wednesday.

As a group, librarians "are over three quarters white and nearly 90 percent white in leadership roles," the Ithaka S+R report reveals.

The lack of "library employees of color" is a "shortcoming" in the academic library industry, the report also says.

"The library community considers diversity to be a core value. But the academic library sector has struggled with addressing equity, diversity and inclusion."

Academic libraries have struggled with an excess of white employees for decades, notes Inside Higher Ed.

A co-author of the library diversity report, Roger C. Schonfeld, noted that the small percentage of minority employees who work in academic libraries tend to work in secondary roles such as technical services and acquisitions. These jobs are disappearing at libraries as holdings become more and more digital.

Bolton: Israeli Strike Against Iran May Be Only Option to Stop Nuclear Program
[Free Beacon] Decades of U.S. diplomacy with Iran, including the Obama administration's landmark nuclear accord, may leave Israeli military action as the only option to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, according to former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton.

"I don't make any disguise of the idea that ultimately it may take an Israeli strike against Iran's nuclear program to stop it," Bolton told the Washington Free Beacon. "I wish we weren't at that point, but this is what 25 years of negotiations with Iran gets you."

Bolton, a critic of the nuclear agreement implemented two years ago, first pushed the idea in 2009 after Iran's hardline mullahs and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps quashed a pro-democracy opposition movement that erupted in response to nationwide accusations that the presidential election was rigged.

In a Washington Post op-ed, Bolton wrote at the time that given the narrowed window for regime change, a targeted Israeli strike was the only time-sensitive option to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Bolton has since relaxed calls for a preemptive strike and now says the highest priority must be the abolition of the nuclear accord, which limited Tehran's ability to produce nuclear material in exchange for sanctions relief. Still, Bolton said an Israeli attack against Iran's nuclear facilities may be an inevitable deterrent option.

In a draft policy proposal for exiting the accord published in National Review Monday night, Bolton said President Donald Trump's national security team needs to discuss military options with Israel and "selected others" regarding Iran's "menacing behavior."

Bolton, once considered for secretary of state and national security adviser during the presidential transition, said he was asked last month by Trump's now-ousted strategist, Steve Bannon, to draft a policy proposal on how the United States could withdraw from the nuclear accord.

Trump "would like to join in the efforts that a lot of the people that we've seen across this country do and he's pledging $1 million of personal money to the fund," Sanders told news hounds at the White House.

The gangster behind oil fields closure
[Libya Observer] Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
-based Special Deterrence Force has released a video of the infamous gangster from Zintan town, whose family is behind the closure of oil fields.

Osama Dahish, a.k.a Osama Gurj, 32, is a member of so-called Petroleum Facilities Guard of the Western Region, a militia group from Zintan that seizes a number of oil fields.

The 32-year-old criminal is notorious for abduction and human smuggling. In one of his crimes, he and other criminals kidnapped a man from Harsha town and forced his family to pay a ransom of LYD 1 million.

Gurj is also a human smuggler; he transports migrants colonists from both Bani Walid town in northwest of Libya and Brak town in the south to al-Motrad and Sabratha where they start their journey to Europe. He gets thousands of dollars for each trip he facilities.

Now the Gurj family is closing the three main oil fields of El Feel, Sharara and Hamada causing state losses of about LYD 160 million dollars in the first week of closure.

According to oil sources, the oil militia family is demanding the release of Osama before they reopen the fields, but they made other requests to cover up the real reason of closure.

The National Oil Corporation has filed a formal complaint with the Attorney General's Office against the leaders of the armed militias responsible for the closure.

California initiative would legalize psychedelic mushrooms
[THEHILL] California would become the first state in the nation to legalize psychedelic mushrooms if a long-shot ballot initiative passes muster with voters next year.
Like, wow, man!
The measure is backed by a legalization activist who says he kicked his heroin habit with the help of a mushroom trip in Death Valley. It would exempt Californians over the age of 21 from a state law that criminalizes mushrooms containing psilocybin, the compound that gives some mushrooms psychedelic properties.
Like, lissen to the colors!
“There is a cultural fascination with mushrooms that goes really deep,” said Kevin Saunders, the activist behind the initiative. “The soccer moms are all pretty much, for lack of a better term, high now, and some of them are taking mushrooms.”

Saunders filed his measure with the office of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (D) on Friday. Becerra’s office will review the initiative’s proposed language before issuing a ballot title and formal summary of the measure.

Harvey flooding is going to break the failing National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
[Think Progress News Site] What happens when a federal disaster relief program is a disaster?

As days of devastating rain over Houston begins to break, residents will begin returning to their homes to assess the damage wrought by catastrophic flooding. When all is said and done, Hurricane Harvey and its associated flooding may have caused as much as $30 billion in damages for homeowners -- a dizzying total made worse by the fact that the federal flood insurance program, meant to offer relief for homeowners in the face of a natural disaster, is itself underwater and facing an uncertain future.

The National Flood Insurance Program -- administered by FEMA -- is currently roughly $25 billion in debt. That, according to flood experts, is because the program does not charge rates that actually reflect the risk associated with building homes in floodplains. Combine those low premiums with a series of devastating flood events in recent years, throw in the fact that flood insurance goes more toward rebuilding in flood-prone areas than helping people move to safer regions, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster aid that, itself, is a disaster.

"What’s happening around Hurricane Harvey, it just exposes all of the open sores that cover the flood insurance program," Rob Moore, a senior policy analyst with the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Water Program, told ThinkProgress.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Stolen military equipment worth more than $1M sold on eBay
[FoxNews] John Roberts, a 27-year-old from Clarksville, Tennessee, testified Wednesday that he didn’t know the equipment he received was stolen.

“I didn’t try to hide anything,” Roberts said Wednesday. “That’s why I filed taxes on everything I sold on eBay. I thought it was okay.”

The equipment – some of which was resold to buyers in Russia, China, Mexico, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and Ukraine – included machine gun and rifle parts, helmets, guns, medical equipment, gun sights, body army and more.

Roberts said soldiers from Fort Campbell told him the equipment was legally purchased from other soldiers, or that the Army was throwing the equipment out, The Tennessean reported. He also said he didn’t know that he needed to have a license to export certain items overseas.

But a former business partner of Roberts’, Cory Wilson, testified that the two would find soldiers selling military items through classified ads or on Facebook, and ask them for more expensive or harder-to-find items.

Wilson and Roberts shared a warehouse in Clarksville where they stored the equipment, but Roberts said they were not sharing funds. Roberts said the two just had a shared interest in selling things on eBay.

The men removed packaging on the equipment that identified it as government property and used fake descriptions on shipping labels to avoid suspicion, Wilson said.

Wilson pleaded guilty to buying and selling stolen military equipment, wire fraud and violating the Arms Export Control Act.

Michael Barlow, a former Fort Campbell platoon sergeant who pleaded guilty to theft of government property and conspiracy, testified that they started small, but eventually escalated to truckloads of military equipment. He said Roberts even gave him a “Christmas list” of items he wanted the soldiers to steal in Afghanistan and bring back to the United States.

The scheme allegedly operated from 2013 until 2016.

Roberts is being tried in Nashville on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy to steal and sell government property and violating the Arms Export Control Act. Six soldiers and his civilian business partner made plea deals in exchange for their testimony.

A 14-member jury will hear closing arguments and begin deliberations in the case on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House has prepared a request to Congress for an initial $5.9 billion package in Harvey recovery aid, a first down payment to make sure recovery efforts over the next few weeks are adequately funded.

The Trump proposal, which is being finalized pending White House consultations with key Republicans, promises to represent just a fraction of an eventual Harvey recovery package that could rival the $100-billion-plus in taxpayer-financed help for victims of 2005′s Hurricane Katrina.

A senior administration official said the plan will be sent to Congress on Friday and House and Senate votes appear likely next week. The official was not authorized to release the information publicly before a final decision is made and spoke on condition of anonymity.

House GOP leaders have signaled they are aiming to act fast on Harvey aid. Much larger future installments will be required but the initial package, to replenish Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster coffers through Sept. 30, shouldn’t be controversial.

FEMA is spending existing disaster aid reserves -- just $2.1 billion as of Thursday -- at a high rate.

The initial aid money would be a down payment for immediate recovery efforts, to be followed by larger packages later, said White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert. It will take weeks or months to assess the full extent of the damage and need.

Kasich, Hickenblooper unveil bipartisan Obamacare fix
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Republican Gov. John Kasich of Ohio and Democrat Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado on Thursday unveiled a plan to fix Obamacare's exchanges that includes injecting new funds into the controversial law.
No, thank you. That would just delay the inevitable while costing pots of money.
The plan calls for Congress to create a temporary stability fund that states can use for a reinsurance program, which reimburses insurers for major losses.

The governors don't give an exact figure for the stability fund. But they pointed to a recent failed Obamacare repeal bill that would have given states $15 billion a year to address issues in Obamacare's individual marketplaces.

"We recommend funding the program for at least two years and fully offsetting the cost so it does not add to the deficit," according to the letter outlining the plan. The letter was sent a week before Congress returns and starts work on a bipartisan stabilization plan.

The Kasich-Hickenlooper plan also aims to boost rural insurer competition by exempting the health insurance tax for any insurer that offers plans in counties that have only one carrier. It would allow residents to buy into the Federal Employee Benefit Program, which gives rural residents the same healthcare access that federal workers get.

Florida Democrat Election Official Admits Noncitizens, Felons Voting
[DAILYSIGNAL] A veteran Democrat chief election official in Florida has conceded in court that noncitizens and felons possibly voted, in a case that could have national implications for how localities clean up voter rolls.

Broward County Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes is defending her office against a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Rights Union, a conservative legal group that contends there are more voters registered on Broward’s rolls than there are eligible voters in the county.

Those rolls are said to be inflated with not only noncitizens and felons, but also other ineligible people who have voted illegally.

On July 31, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper reported that, in court, "Snipes acknowledged the processes her office [has] been using aren’t perfect and that some noncitizens and felons have voted despite not being eligible--especially right before major elections, when groups are actively registering new voters."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Say What?
[NYTimes] Modern Family star Sofia Vergara has been locked in a bitter custody dispute with Nick Loeb over frozen embryos she and her former fiancé had made when they were together for years, but she recently picked up a major legal victory in the public battle. Since the two split up, Loeb has aggressively tried to acquire custody of the frozen embryos. In his latest legal bid to obtain legal custody, Loeb filed an unusual right-to-live lawsuit against Vergara in Louisiana, the only state where frozen embryos have legal rights. He named the two embryos "Emma" and "Isabella" in court documents, and even went so far as to set up trust funds for them.

Loeb brought the lawsuit back in December and last week a judge threw out the case on the basis that it was filed outside the proper jurisdiction, given that the embryos were created in California. In court documents obtained by TMZ, the judge even kept up the theme Loeb started in the lawsuit, ruling that "Emma" and "Isabella" are "citizens of California."

Nice one, your honor.
But, in spite of being citizens, they are not human and can be aborted at any time during gestation. I'm trying to get a handle on that. It seems contradictory to me.

#2  Funny story. Nick Loeb-- I believe his father was an ambassador (to Israel?) of some kind during the Reagan administration-- was in my class at high school. He was a total putz then as he is now. Not very well liked. Not many friends. Gravitated towards the misfits and outcasts of the school more than anyone else. Kind of seemed to have a superiority complex in that he generally carried himself as if he was inherently better than the rest of his peers around him. In other words, a total jerk.

Ever since he started dating Sofia Vergara, myself and the classmates that I keep in touch with could not for the life of us understand what in the hell she saw in him or was doing with him. Eventually, it appears she caught on and kicked him to the curb. Good for her but I still can't believe it took her as long as it did.

His efforts at asserting custody over her frozen embryos pretty much tells you all you need to know about the guy.

Hey Nick, get a life already, will ya!

6 ISIS Turbans die in Iraqi airstrike

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Six Islamic State militants, including a member of the group’s so-called legislative court, in an airstrike launched in western Anbar, a military source was quoted saying.

Speaking to Alghad Press, the source said, “U.S.-led Coalition jets shelled a house of one of the legislative court members in Qaim,” the source said, adding that the shelling left the member, as well as five of his guards, killed.

On Wednesday, the Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said the air force bombarded six IS locations in Qaim, killing 94 members, including a senior security commander and a close aide to the group’s supreme leader abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Anbar’s western towns of Anah, Qaim and Rawa are still held by the extremist group since 2014, when it occupied one third of Iraq to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate. Iraqi troops were able to return life back to normal in the biggest cities of Anbar including Fallujah, Ramadi and others after recapturing them.

Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition regularly pound IS locations in the province.

In late July, a military source was quoted saying that Lt.Gen Abdul-Amir Yarallah, commander of the Nineveh Operations, ordered to besiege IS havens in western Anbar preparing to invade them.

The Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan in a statement confirmed that the commander of the terror network was killed late on Tuesday night.

The statement further added that the slain Haqqani network commander has been identified as Mawlavi Abdul Rahman who was also famous as Mullah Qand.

According to MoI, the operation that led to the killing of Mullah Qand was conducted in the vicinity of Kharwar district by the Special Unit of the Afghan national police forces.

Government
Trump moves to restore work requirement for welfare
[Wash Times] The Trump administration moved Wednesday to reimpose work requirements for Americans on welfare, revoking an Obama-era policy that had urged states to apply for waivers exempting the poor from having to show they were either getting job training or looking for work.

Requiring work was a key part of the 1996 welfare reform law enacted by a GOP-led Congress and signed by then-President Bill Clinton, and Mr. Trump’s move restores the law as written.

"The waiver option offered by the Obama administration is being replaced today by an expectation that work should always be encouraged as a condition for receiving welfare," said Steven Wagner, the Health and Human Services Department’s acting assistant secretary for children and families.

The 2012 Obama policy didn’t outright gut the welfare law. Instead, it pushed states to consider applying for waivers that would let them still pay benefits to people even if they weren’t actively seeking work, job training or meeting other criteria.

The move proved to be ineffective.

Europe
Europe is paying for African migrant deterrence
[DW] Such a display of unity is quite rare. European and African leaders attending a summit in Gay Paree agreed that migration must be stopped - if the price is right.

After the long summer break, the French president kicked off the first major political event of the season with a tea party of sorts in the garden of the Elysee Palace. If the topics discussed were not so cold-hearted, one could be forgiven for thinking Emmanuel Macron invited leaders from Germany, Italia, Spain, Libya, Niger and Chad to talk about their holidays. But this afternoon in Gay Paree was dedicated to the fate of hundreds of thousands of people - migrants colonists from Africa who are waiting to travel to Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
from Libya or other countries on the continent.

No joke: Robbers walk into bar full of off-duty cops
[NYPOST] This duo picked the wrong pub to knock off.

Joseph McInnis III, 21, and 22-year-old Tyree McCoy robbed a Maryland bar filled with dozens of off-duty officers there for a cop retirement party, WBAL-TV reported.
Ooh! I seen dis movie!
The armed crooks entered the take-out portion of Monaghan’s Pub in Woodlawn on Tuesday night and held up an employee at gunpoint before running off with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said, according to the news outlet.

"At that time, the person who had been behind the counter knew that there was a retirement party for a police officer happening, so they went into the other portion and alerted the officers to the fact that they had just been involved in an armed robbery," Baltimore County Police Officer Jennifer Peach said.

Off-duty officers at the shindig quickly ran out and took the men into custody.

They were charged with armed robbery and possession of a handgun and were being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center, according to the report.

"I’m sure that they weren’t planning on there being a large room filled with coppers," Peach said.

US takes aim at Iran over support for Hamas military wing
[IsraelTimes] Nikki Haley says Yahya Sinwar's statement that Tehran is 'biggest supporter' of terror group is 'stunning admission'
Gotcha!
The United States on Thursday described remarks by a Paleostinian Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", leader boasting of strong military ties with Iran as a "stunning admission" that showed Tehran was violating a UN ban on arms exports.

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who heads the Paleostinian Islamist terrorist movement in Gazoo, told news hounds on Monday that Iran was the "biggest supporter" of Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

Iran is barred from exporting weapons under a key UN resolution that endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
"The Iranian military support to Hamas and al-Qassam is strategic," said Sinwar, adding that ties with Iran had "become fantastic and returned to its former era."

In a statement, the US mission to the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
recalled that Iran is barred from exporting weapons under a key UN resolution that endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

"Once again, Iran is showing its true colors," said US Ambassador Nikki Haley
...first woman to serve as Governor of South Carolina, and the second Indian-American governor in the country, after Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. At the age of 39, Haley is the youngest current governor in the U.S., a distinction formerly held by Jindal. She is a Republican, which really grates on the Dems...

Iran must abide by UN resolutions or decide "whether it wants to be the leader of a jihadist terrorist movement," she added. "It’s long past time for the international community to hold Iran to the same standard that all countries who actually value peace and security are held to."

A strong supporter of Israel, Haley has repeatedly criticized Iran at the United Nations and cast doubt over its commitment to the nuclear deal.

The United States considers Hamas, which has fought three wars with Israel since 2008, a terrorist organization.

A controversial verdict
[DAWN] A CATACLYSMIC event in the country’s history appears to have ended with a whimper in court. Nearly a decade since Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
’s tragic liquidation, an anti-terrorism court has delivered its questionable verdict in a case that was controversially investigated and prosecuted. Five suspects accused of involvement in the planning and execution of the attack on Bhutto in Rawalpindi on Dec 27, 2007, have been acquitted; two senior coppers responsible for protecting her on that fateful day and, later, securing the site of the attack for evidentiary purposes have been convicted; and former military dictator and then president retired Gen Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
has been declared an absconder in the case.
Eh? Do people seriously believe former president General Musharraf was involved in the death of Benazir Bhutto?
It is a thoroughly unsatisfactory conclusion to a case that raised more questions than it purported to answer. While criticism has been directed at the court, the problem originated with a weak prosecution. The possibility that the state may appeal the verdict should be considered seriously, and this time the state should assemble a stronger case that is scrupulously backed up by evidence and the law.

The Bhutto liquidation consisted of a number of tragedies wrapped into a single traumatic episode. Surely, a broken criminal judicial and policing system must bear a great deal of the blame for the failure to identify and punish the architects of the former prime minister’s liquidation. Similarly, the Musharraf regime ought to be held accountable for appearing to use Bhutto’s security as a negotiating tool in the political deal-making that was being attempted at the time. But there is another inescapable fact: the PPP won power in 2008, manoeuvred Mr Musharraf out of office and then proceeded to do virtually nothing to try and identify and hold accountable the perpetrators of Bhutto’s murder. The party and its sympathisers argue that the responsibility to sustain a nascent transition to democracy forced the PPP government to make unpleasant choices. While that may be true -- the Asif Ali Zardari-led PPP was under pressure on many fronts -- it is also the case that the PPP itself opted to relegate the murder of its iconic leader to the bottom of its list of governance priorities.

Notions of self-survival and having to make unpleasant compromises tend to characterise politicians’ accounts of their time in office. But Bhutto was no ordinary leader and her death should never have been treated as merely another dark chapter in the history of a country that has seen many such incidents. The PPP government owed it to the nation, its own party and its assassinated leader to identify and prosecute those responsible for her death. The laments of PPP leaders today may be real, but so was their conscious decision to turn their back on their slain leader for the sake of power and public office. It is a heartbreaking disgrace to the memory of one of the country’s greatest leaders.

US to let Iranian-backed militias within 10 km of Golan Heights — report
[IsraelTimes] Agreement with Russians on policing south Syrian truce said to anger Israel, other allies

US officials have agreed to let Iranian-backed militias take up positions in Syria less than ten kilometers from the Israeli Golan Heights, the Arabic daily Asharq Al Awsat reported Thursday.

The report appeared to back up Russian media claims that Moscow has ignored pleas from Israel to prevent Iran from exploiting Syria’s ongoing civil war to expand its military influence into Syrian territory.

Citing unnamed Western diplomatic sources, the report said a US team that was holding talks with their Russian counterparts in Amman, Jordan, to discuss the nationality of observer forces overseeing a July truce, backed down on some of their initial demands.

The report said the US agreed that Iranian-backed militias could be positioned as close as 8-16 kilometers (five to ten miles) from the Jordanian border and the Golan Heights, less than half the originally sought 32 kilometers (20 miles) distance.

In July, the Times of London reported that Israel was pushing Russia and the US for an agreement that would prevent "Hezbollah or other Iranian-backed militias" from operating in the area, which would extend some 30 miles (48 kilometers) beyond the Israeli-Syrian border on the Golan Heights.

Hezbollah, the Lebanese terror group that acts as a proxy of Iran, has been fighting on behalf of the Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Terror of Aleppo ...
in his efforts to suppress a six-year long insurgency. Russia, an ally of both Syria and Iran, has also provided military assistance in the war.

The US negotiators also agreed to let Russian observers police the truce zones, angering other US officials and allies of America. In particular, Israeli officials are concerned that the Russian presence could limit its operations against targets in Syria, the report said.

In recent years there have been several Arclight airstrikes inside Syria, attributed to the Israel, that targeted alleged shipments of advanced weapons and rockets for Hezbollah. Israel has vowed to prevent the Shiite organization, which holds positions along Israel’s northern border with Leb, from obtaining game-changing weaponry.

Last week Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Russian President Vladmir Putin in Sochi and entreated him to curb Iranian military expansion in Syria.

On Friday Pravda reported that while Putin told Netanyahu at their talks that "Israel is also an important partner for Russia in the region," he stressed that "Iran is Russia’s strategic ally in the Middle East" and declined to abandon Russia’s alliance with the Islamic Theocratic Republic.

The Pravda report, citing unnamed sources present at the start of the meeting, said Netanyahu was "was too emotional and at times even close to panic" as he warned Putin against the threat Iran poses to Israel and regional stability. Israeli officials, among them Environment Minister Ze’ev Elkin who had accompanied Netanyahu on the trip to Russia, dismissed the report as untrue.

Speaking to Israeli journalists in a conference call after the meeting, Netanyahu said he told Putin that Israel would take action if its "red lines" were crossed.

US, Jordanian, and Russian officials are also planning to meet in the coming days to discuss re-opening a border crossing from Jordan to Syria. While US and Jordanian officials would rather wait until forces have gained a firmer control on the region, Russian officials want to move ahead with opening the crossing, the Ashraq Al Awsat report said.

Evergreen State College faces $2.1M budget shortfall, cites enrollment drop, issues layoff notices
[THECOLLEGEFIX] Administrators at The Evergreen State College have announced that the embattled school faces a massive $2.1 million budget shortfall due in part to a drop in enrollment, and the institution has already handed out some temporary layoff notices as officials grapple with balancing the books.

In an Aug. 28 memo to the campus community titled "Enrollment and Budget Update," officials report that fall 2017-18 registration is down about 5 percent, from 3,922 students to 3,713. But the problem is nearly all of the students they lost are nonresidents, who traditionally pay a much higher tuition to attend, officials explained in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by The College Fix.

Combined with a shortfall in funding from state coffers to shoulder a mandatory cost-of-living salary increase and a rise in the general cost of operations, and the school must find a way to resolve a $2.1 million shortfall for the fiscal year that began July 1, according to the memo.

"This creates the need for significant budget cuts in the immediate future," the memo states, adding that the university late last month already handed out temporary layoff notices to 17 facilities staff members.

"Some notices were rescinded as we try to use scarce local dollars to keep people employed," the memo states. "... However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
if the capital budget crisis at the state level continues indefinitely, layoffs will become impossible to avoid."

Milwaukee sheriff, Trump supporter Clarke resigns
[STARTRIBUNE] The tough-talking sheriff of Milwaukee County, David Clarke, resigned without explanation Thursday, capping a tumultuous year for the divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
, provocative lawman whose unabashed support for President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and in-your-face personality earned him a national following among some conservatives.

Clarke submitted his resignation in a one-sentence letter to the county clerk that gave no reason for his departure more than a year before his term is up. In a brief statement a couple of hours later, Clarke also didn't explain.

"I have chosen to retire to pursue other opportunities," the statement said. "I will have news about my next steps in the very near future."

The national spotlight shone on Clarke during the Republican National Convention last year, when the cowboy-hat-wearing sheriff took the stage as one of the few African-Americans to speak in support of Trump's candidacy.

But while Clarke gained the admiration of conservative backers of Trump, he faced lawsuits back home and criticism over the operations at the county jail he oversaw, where four inmates died last year. One of the inmates died of dehydration because jail staff shut off water to his cell as punishment.

Clarke's many liberal foes welcomed his departure.

"After years of abuse at his hands, the people of Milwaukee can sleep soundly tonight," state Sen. Lena Taylor, a Democrat from Milwaukee and a frequent Clarke critic, said in a statement.

Voces de la Frontera, an advocacy group for immigrants colonists and low-wage workers, had sharply criticized Clarke for seeking authority for his deputies to perform the functions of immigration agents. The group called his departure "a victory for the people of Milwaukee County and the state of Wisconsin" and claimed credit for driving him out of office.

Clarke's most recent Twitter post from Thursday afternoon showed him posing with law enforcement officers at the National Fraternal Order of Police convention in Nashville.

The firebrand
...firebrands are noted more for audio volume and the quantity of spittle generated than for any actual logic in their arguments...
sheriff made himself a darling of the political right through his brash social media presence, his staunch support for Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration and his support for patrolling Moslem neighborhoods.
Besoeker gives us articles from Think Progress and Fox News listing some of Sheriff Clarke's issues, and Think Progress adds:
Clarke’s departure re-opens the prospect, widely rumored in the spring, of the authoritarian-minded right-wing lawman joining President Donald Trump’s cabinet. Clarke had previously accepted a middle-management job in Trump’s Department of Homeland Security, only to rescind that decision weeks later without explanation.

The top job at DHS is open again, after former secretary John Kelly moved into the White House to replace Reince Priebus as Chief of Staff in late July. Clarke was rumored to be a short-lister for the job before Trump named Kelly earlier this year.

Running where?
[DAWN] IN the introduction to Pakistain at the Crossroad, Christophe Jaffrelot labels Pakistain as a "client state" and a "pivotal state". For long, we had been dubbed an ideological state and a security state.

None of these titles are too flattering, but they are not inaccurate. The status of being a client and a pivot stems from Jaffrelot’s observation about Pakistain’s "ability to navigate at the interface of domestic and external dynamics".

This has been increasingly in evidence with the passage of time as the country is sucked deeper into the quagmire of external and internal conflict and instability. The two are intricately intertwined. That is what we are witnessing today in the wake of President Donald Trump

Britain
Uber driver 'terrorist' 'got LOST trying to find Windsor Castle when satnav sent him to a PUB of the same name before he drove to Buckingham Palace and attacked police with 4ft samurai sword'
[DailyMail]
  • Mohiussunnath Choudhury, 26, has been charged with a terror offence by police

  • He is accused of having attacked police outside Buckingham Palace last Friday

  • But according to a new report, he had actually intended to go to Windsor Castle

  • His satnav, however, took him to The Windsor Castle pub, then he went to London

  • A court was told today he left a note to his sister telling her to 'be strong'

  • Choudhury, from Luton, Bedfordshire, was remanded in custody by magistrates
Yesterday, Chowdhury appeared before a district judge at Westminster magistrates' court in London. The British-born suspect, who is of Bangladeshi heritage, is accused of one charge of preparing terrorist acts, which carries a maximum life sentence.

Mark Carol, prosecuting, said a note to Chowdhury's sister Sneha, 23, was found by detectives. It read: 'To my dearest sister, By the time you read this Insha'Allah [God willing] I will be with Allah.

'Do not cry and be strong. The Shaheed [witness or martyr] will take 70 members of his family with him to paradise. I will take you there Insha'Allah.

'Tell everyone I love them and that they should struggle against the enemies of Allah ...The Queen and her soldiers will all be in the hellfire, they go to war with Moslems around the world and kill them without any mercy.'
Sudden Jihad Syndrome, then.
Chowdhury, flanked by two plainclothes officers in the reinforced glass dock, nodded as the note was read out. He spoke in soft, well-spoken English to confirm his personal details.

No members of the Royal Family were at Buckingham Palace when Chowdhury was jugged
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
on Friday evening last week. The Queen was at Balmoral.

Police seized mobile phones and a laptop from the £230,000 home Chowdhury shares with his parents and sister in a Luton suburb. They arrested a second man, aged 30, in west London, who was released without charge.

According to one online profile, Chowdhury's sister is a graduate and a recruitment consultant.

The family's former neighbours in Uxbridge, west London, said both siblings went to Church of England primary schools.

Chowdhury was remanded in jug and ordered to appear at the Old Bailey on September 21.

Mind of a killer
[DAWN] THE JIT report of Mufti Shakir’s interrogation in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
’s Central Prison in March 2014 offers a chilling insight into the mindset of a violent murderous Moslem, while the events that followed illustrate the terrible failings of our criminal justice system. Mufti Shakir was enjugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on suspicion of having criminal masterminded the bombing that had killed Sindh’s counterterrorism chief Chaudhry Aslam in January that year. During his interrogation -- which included the confession that he had also murdered 10 coppers and an army soldier -- Mufti Shakir claimed he had offered to undertake the suicide mission against SP Aslam himself. However,
there is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened...
a Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
accomplice dissuaded him, saying that as a ’religious scholar’ his skills as a preacher were too important to be sacrificed. So Mufti Shakir, says the JIT report, mentally prepared a 25-year-old named Naimatullah over the course of a week for the task. The success of the operation was a huge morale booster for the many murderous Moslem groups fighting the state and, conversely, a major setback for law-enforcement authorities.

If given credence, the account confirms in several ways what is thus far known about the ’traditional’ path to militancy for many in the ’90s: poverty, a madressah education with a lack of any substantial formal schooling, and a family with equally hard-line religious beliefs. To this country’s enduring misfortune, there were at the time numerous jihadi outfits that young men with murderous Moslem mindsets could join and where their inclination to violence would be nurtured and given an outlet. Having worked his way through several of them, Mufti Shakir joined the TTP in 2012. As a ’commander’ he proceeded to radicalise the next generation of recruits -- such as the young man who was cannon fodder in the elimination of SP Aslam. With his violent past and clear potential for further mayhem, not to mention the findings of the JIT report, it can scarcely be comprehended how this high-level hard boy managed to get bail. The abject failure by investigative authorities to build a prosecutable case against him has had deadly consequences. It is believed that having fled to Afghanistan where he is running a training camp for hard boys, Mufti Shakir has since dispatched operatives to target police officials in Karachi. The confluence of single-minded bandidos bandidos hard boys and a criminal justice system whose weaknesses defy belief amounts to a scenario in which it will be near impossible for Pakistain to win its battle against terrorism.

#1  If given credence, the account confirms in several ways what is thus far known about the ’traditional’ path to militancy for many in the ’90s: poverty, a madressah education with a lack of any substantial formal schooling, and a family with equally hard-line religious beliefs.

Funny how they don't mention the non-traditional route.

Byron York: FBI fights public release of Trump dossier info
[Wash Examiner] Senate investigators have had problems getting the FBI to reveal information about the Trump dossier. They're not the only ones. Outside groups filing Freedom of Information Act requests are running up against a stone wall when it comes to the dossier.

On March 8, Judicial Watch filed a FOIA request for documents regarding the bureau's contacts with Christopher Steele, the former British spy who dug for dirt in Russia on candidate Donald Trump in the months before the 2016 presidential election. Steele's effort was commissioned by the oppo research firm Fusion GPS, which at the time was being paid by still-unidentified Democrats who supported Hillary Clinton. Just weeks before the election, the FBI reportedly agreed to support Steele's oppo project -- an extraordinary action in the midst of a campaign which Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said raised "questions about the FBI's independence from politics."

So Judicial Watch asked the Justice Department for:
Any and all records of communications between any official, employee, or representative of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mr. Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer and the owner of the private firm Orbis Business Intelligence.
Any and all records regarding, concerning, or related to the proposed, planned, or actual payment of any funds to Mr. Steele and/or Orbis Business Intelligence.

Any and all records produced in preparation for, during, or pursuant to any meetings or telephonic conversations between any official, employee, or representative of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mr. Christopher Steele and/or any employee or representative of Orbis Business Intelligence.

The idea was that the records would shed light on the basic questions regarding the dossier. Just what did the FBI do? Why? And -- this is very important to Grassley -- did the FBI ever use the "salacious and unverified" (the words of former FBI Director James Comey) information in the dossier as a basis for applying for warrants to put Americans under surveillance?

The Justice Department's response to Judicial Watch was simple: No. And not just no: The Department would not even confirm or deny whether any such documents or communications even existed.

So on May 16, Judicial Watch filed suit, seeking to force release of the information. In response, the department told Judicial Watch to forget about it. "Plaintiff's claims are moot," Justice lawyers wrote, "because Defendant has notified Plaintiff of its decision to neither confirm nor deny the existence of any responsive records, and the reasons for that decision."

#1  Maverick and Buzzfead evidently have copies, as well as the copies in Soetoro's intelligence community distribution. Surely a copy can be found somewhere. Strange how things simply....disappear.

Now, two lawsuits — one in the United States and a second in the U.K. — are being brought by lawyers for Aleksej Gubarev, a Cyprus-based Internet entrepreneur whom Steele’s Russian sources accused of cyber spying against the Democratic Party leadership.

According to a new court document in the British lawsuit, counsel for defendants Steele and Orbis repeatedly point to McCain, R-Ariz., a vocal Trump critic, and a former State Department official as two in a handful of people known to have had copies of the full document before it circulated among journalists and was published by BuzzFeed.

#2  The dossier is a fake so why not bring it out and get to the bottom of the whole sordid mess--McCain's role, Hillary and the DNC's role, and the intelligence agencies involved both here and abroad?

Afghanistan
11 die in airstrikes in Logar
At least 11 civilians were killed in foreign troop’s airstrike in central Logar province on Wednesday, local officials confirmed on Thursday.

In addition, 16 other insurgents were wounded.

The airstrike took place in part of Pul-e-Alam, the capital of the province after Taliban insurgents reportedly hid in civilian houses and were targeted by foreign troops, provincial governor Haleem Fedaye said.

“Two key Taliban commanders were also killed in the airstrike,” he said.

However, he did not provide further details.

In the meantime, NATO’s Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan said in a statement on Thursday that: “US Forces-Afghanistan is aware of an incident in the Pul-e-Alam district in Logar province this morning with potential civilian casualties.”

The statement said that an official investigation has been launched into the incident.

“United States Forces-Afghanistan takes all allegations of civilian casualties seriously and is working with our Afghan partners to determine the facts surrounding this incident,” it said.

More information will be released as appropriate, the statement added.
This comes after at least 16 civilians, including women and children, were killed in airstrikes by foreign forces in Zerkoh district in Herat province late Monday afternoon.

The attack also left seven more wounded, residents said.

Provincial officials in Herat also confirmed the airstrikes but said a fact finding team has been assigned by the national security council to probe the incident.

...Former president of Aghanistan, part of the problem not part of the solution...
strongly reacted at the recent civilian deaths in the hands of the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
and ISIS gunnies as well as the alleged US Arclight airstrike.

The Office of the former President in a statement said Tuesday that once again the ordinary civilians including children bit the dust or were maimed in US Arclight airstrike in Bakhtabad area of Shindand district on Monday.

The statement further added that some ordinary non-combatants were killed in a similar Arclight airstrike in Chahardara district of northern Kunduz province.

Two days ago in Kabul’s Imam Zaman mosque inflicted casualties to the civilians including women and kiddies, Karzai said, adding that on Tuesday a suicide kaboom once again inflicted casualties to the civilians in Kabul.

Karzai further added that the civilians are one day killed in the cities from the address of ISIS and Taliban while the other day they are killed in the villages under the pretext of the fight against Taliban and ISIS and the killing of the Afghans continue.

According to Karzai, the latest killings of the civilians prove that the Afghans are being killed by the foreigners and a foreign cause.

He insisted that the Afghans must remain vigilant against such conspiracies and only unity and vigilance among the people can thwart the conspiracies and lead to peace and stability in the country.

Spain admits receiving Barcelona attack warning
[Al Ahram] Spain received a warning in May that the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group was planning an attack in Barcelona but decided it lacked credibility, Catalan regional authorities said Thursday.

But they denied news reports that US security agencies were behind the warning of an attack targeting the city, where the jihadists claimed a deadly van rampage two weeks ago.

The daily El Periodico de Cataluna reported that the US National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) had alerted Spanish intelligence officers to the threat weeks before a man ploughed his van into crowds of tourists along Barcelona's Las Ramblas boulevard on August 17, killing 14 people.

"Unsubstantiated information of unknown veracity from late May 2017 indicated that the Islamic State of Irak and ash-Sham (ISIS) was planning to conducted unspecified terrorist attacks during the summer against crowded tourist sites in Barcelona, Spain, specifically La Rambla street," according to what the paper claims was an NCTC briefing note dated May 25.

Ah, the NCTC. Part of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. And Clapper is gone. It wasn't a warning from real Klingons, you see.

#3  Strange, nothing from the embassy. Perhaps there was a meeting or something. One would think SOMEONE would have been down on the Las Ramblas, ....or no ?

#4  No one from the embassy likes to go to Las Ramblas. It's full of tourists. And because the Spanish, more specifically the Catalans, and especially the Barcelonans, don't like tourists.

One should always be sensitive to one's hosts, you know.

[RADIOSHABELLE] Suspected al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...

Saleh downplayed the attack, saying the Death Eaters had attempted to attack the communication mast to cut telecommunication services in the area before they could carry out terror attack in the restive region.

The attack comes two days after the Death Eaters killed two military personnel in an improvised bomb (IED) attack in Damasa area. The holy warriors also engaged the military personnel in a shootout before escaping.
