CNN gearing up to sue over Jim Acosta's suspended White House press pass
[Wash Examiner] Yeah, that'll work. Actions have consequences, bitches, and when you send bad actors as your representatives, they don't get in. Nobody's entitled to a Press Pass to the WH.
CNN may be gearing up for a legal battle over the Trump administration's revocation of chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta's permanent press credentials.

Former ABC News reporter and anchor Sam Donaldson appeared Sunday on CNN's "Reliable Sources" and said he believed a lawsuit had already been filed.

"I hope I'm not mistaken, but it's my understanding that CNN and Acosta have sued, that there will be a court hearing on Tuesday on this very matter that we've been discussing," Donaldson said.

Host Brian Stelter replied that he was not aware of such a case.

A CNN spokesperson told the Washington Examiner that a lawsuit has not been filed yet. "No decisions have been made. We have reached out to the White House and gotten no response," the spokesperson said.

#4  I've seen the video and I have a hard time calling that assault. But wrestling an intern for the mic is definitely rude behavior and Acosta deserves to be spanked.

It will be amusing to see what legal theory CNN comes up with when/if they file suit. It's not like the White House kicked out *all* their lying scumbag reporters.

If I were the White House, I'd set up a private room for Acosta with snacks, sugary drinks and his own personal live video feed so he can watch the press conferences and not annoy the adults.

Science & Technology
Quantum 'compass' promises navigation without using GPS .
[engadget] GPS is vital to modern navigation, but it's extremely fragile. Never mind coverage -- if a satellite fails or there's a jamming attack, it quickly becomes useless. Scientists may have a much more robust answer, though. Scientists have demonstrated a "commercially viable" quantum accelerometer that could provide navigation without GPS or other satellite technology. The device uses lasers to cool atoms to extremely low temperatures, and then measures the quantum wave properties of those atoms as they respond to acceleration.

The result is an extremely sensitive device that's also considerably more reliable than conventional accelerometers. While existing hardware can help determine to location to some extent by measuring velocity, it quickly falls apart without help from space.

As you might have noticed by looking at the photo above, this quantum 'compass' isn't ready to replace the accelerometer in your phone. It's only truly ready for ships, trains and other large vehicles where size and power requirements aren't major factors. It could keep transportation networks humming even if GPS fails outright. The researchers also expect the underlying concepts to help with science studies, such as looking for gravitational waves.

'Raining hell down': death toll rises to 25 in California fires, as more victims found
[Guardian] The charred remains of fourteen more victims have been found in and around the northern California town of Paradise, and two bodies were also discovered in Malibu, officials said on Saturday, raising the death toll to 25.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott Maclean said there were no details immediately available about the circumstances of the deaths at Paradise, a mountain community some 90 miles (145 km) north of Sacramento left devastated by the Camp Fire. He said the bodies were badly burned, which would make identification difficult.

Authorities are bringing in a mobile DNA lab to help with identification and are encouraging relatives to donate.

The Camp Fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in Paradise, more structures than any other California wildfire on record. It grew to 105,000 acres on Saturday with 20% containment.

#3  Fire is part of the deal in California. Y'all got your hurricanes, we got our fires...and earthquakes.

I think Trump is right to some extent when he blames poor forest management. Many of these fires are not in the kind of forests with tall trees but in scrub brush. Either way, fire is a part of the natural process. The seeds from some of these plants only germinate after a fire has swept over them. Fires clear areas where dead brush is too thick to allow for new growth. To control the fires, the dead brush must be cleared either manually (a lot of hard work involved) or by controlled burns that may be difficult to control.

Too many houses have been built in some of these fire prone areas with too little thought given to what happens when the fire starts burning. If you build a housing tract on the edge of a canyon where there is dense and dead or dry brush, don't act all surprised if some of those houses get burned. And don't be surprised if the insurance companies raise their rates. If the roads are inadequate, as they frequently are in California, escape becomes impossible because of the traffic jams.

It isn't God's judgment. It's just that shit happens and it happens a lot more often when you have morons like Jerry Brown running things.

Pelosi 'Proud to Be an Instrument of God's Deed' with San Francisco Values
[PJ] WASHINGTON -- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who said she has no doubts she'll be elected speaker of the House by her colleagues, said in her first interview since Election Day that she's proud to be branded "a San Francisco liberal... as that, the San Francisco values of St. Francis of Assisi, which I'm proud to be an instrument of God's deed."

Pelosi told CNN that she intends to bring for a vote initiatives that have enjoyed bipartisan support in Congress but haven't been brought to the floor by GOP leadership, including protection for DREAMers, comprehensive immigration reform, gun regulations, and barring discrimination against LGBT Americans.

"President Lincoln said public sentiment is everything, with it you can pass, you can do almost anything with that, or practically nothing. And I do believe that our strength is in the public involvement," she said.

Pelosi said that when President Trump called her after Democrats retook the House "I don't know if he said deals" because "it was very noisy in the room."

"I heard the word 'infrastructure' -- that came through clearly. But he said that, you know, let's talk how we -- I'm sure we can come to agreement on some things, and we have an obligation to try to find common ground," she said. "It is our constitutional responsibility to be a check on the executive branch and we have the responsibility to have oversight on the agencies of the executive branch and there will still be intent to implement that. And that shouldn't be -- cause for him of any concern, because that's the regular order."

Karl Rove sounds the alarm about GOP losses in the suburbs
Excerpt
[Washington Examiner] With votes still to count, Democrats were on track to pick up nearly 40 House seats; they needed only 23 to flip the House.
Downtown Atlanta and the I-85-I-75 junction at the bottom of the map.
"We’ve got to examine the reasons why we lost and figure out how to fix those problems going forward," Rove said. "Problematically, the purple places, with the exception of Florida, didn’t go blue, but they got bluer."

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, joined Rove on the panel to review the midterm elections and preview 2020. The Republican’s old Georgia House seat, suburban Atlanta’s Sixth Congressional District, went Democratic for the first time since he flipped it in1978. Trump garnered just 48 percent of the vote there in 2016, defeating Clinton by just 1 point.

Wiki: The [6th Congressional] district consists of many of the northern suburbs of Atlanta and includes portions of eastern Cobb County, northern Fulton County, and northern Dekalb County. The district includes all or portions of the cities of Roswell, Johns Creek, Tucker, Alpharetta, Marietta, Milton, Mountain Park, Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville, and Dunwoody.

Topless woman charges POTUS motorcade in Paris
[Washington Examiner] PARIS ‐ A topless woman jumped a barricade and ran toward President Trump's motorcade as he traveled Sunday to a ceremony to commemorate the centennial of World War I's end.

The incident occurred as Trump drove along the Champs Elysees roadway from the U.S. ambassador's residence toward the Arc de Triomphe, where more than 60 world leaders gathered to mark Armistice Day.

Femen, a feminist group that has staged similar topless protests, claimed responsibilty for the protest, saying on Twitter the woman was protesting the "hypocrisy" of the event.

The words "fake" and "peace" were written on her body.

Video of the incident shows the woman running into the street as the presidential limo passed. She was chased after by French security officials.

"A topless woman, with writing on her body, got around the barriers that were blocking off the road from the blocked off sidewalk and tried to run toward the POTUS motorcade. She was quickly accosted by three security officials," a pool report said.

Oprah and Obama Transcend Race; Or So We Thought
[Townhall] The midterms left us with a lot of things to think about. One of the most mind-numbing was when Oprah and Obama made it pretty clear that they believe America still oppresses black people.

"All of us may have been created equal," a preachy Oprah said at her Stacey Abrams rally. "But if ya woke! If you woke; if you woke just-a lil’ bit ‐ you got sense enough to know that everybody’s not treated equally. The reality is this: We see injustices ‐ big and small ‐ all around us every single day of our lives. ... (A)s our civil rights predecessors use to say, ’We shall not be moved!’ ... ’Don’t let nobody turn you around!"

OK, Oprah. So, voting for Stacey Abrams was kind of a civil rights issue, huh? Pick the other guy, and you’re taking sides with the racists. Got it.

Here’s Obama at his Abrams rally:

Government
Obama's Judges Continue Thwarting Trump
[NR] As I write on Friday, the restraining order hasn’t come down yet. But it’s just a matter of time. Some federal district judge, somewhere in the United States, will soon issue an injunction blocking enforcement of the Trump administration’s restrictions on asylum applications.

The restrictions come in the form of a rule promulgated jointly by the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, and a proclamation issued by President Trump. In conjunction, they assert that an alien who wishes to apply for asylum in the United States must act lawfully: An alien who is physically present here and wishes to apply must be in the country legally; an alien outside the country who wishes to apply must present himself at a lawful port of entry ‐ not attempt to smuggle his way in or force his way in as part of a horde (i.e., no invasions by caravan).

Of course, what used to be assumed is today deemed intolerable. It is no longer permitted to expect of non-Americans what is required of Americans ‐ adherence to American law while on American soil.

Therefore, the fact that the administration’s action is entirely reasonable will not matter. No more will it matter that, contrary to numbing media repetition, the rule and proclamation derive from federal statutory law. Nor will it make any difference that, in part, the president is relying on the same sweeping congressional authorization based on which, just four months ago, the Supreme Court affirmed his authority to control the ingress of aliens based on his assessment of national-security needs.

As far as I'm concerned, that's basis for ignoring the judge until it reaches / gets resolved by SCOTUS, as it's happened previously.

Trump ought to be able to replace a few of these corrupt judges and expose and clean up the Swamp a bit more. Plus it will give more Dems TDS. After Trump we can elect Pence as POTUS. And maybe by that time Hillary and Obummer will be locked up if they haven't first died from old age.

How To Become Wealthy On A High Income - Good Tips, High Income Or Not
[Forbes] To the average American, the title of this post sounds silly. She may wonder, "Isn't someone with a high income already wealthy?" This person has not yet learned a critical distinction and an important lesson in building wealth--income is not wealth. The most common measure of wealth is net worth--everything you own minus everything you owe. It is entirely possible to have a very high income and have a negative net worth. Likewise, it is entirely possible to have a very low income and yet possess vast sums of wealth. Income is not wealth despite how our tax code, innumerable newspaper articles, and the majority of people talk about it.

Even someone financially astute enough to recognize the difference between income and wealth may express surprise that an article like this one needs to be written; "Surely it must be easier to build wealth on a high income than on a low one, no?" The answer to that, of course, is yes, all else being equal. The problem is that all else is never equal.

Trouble in Nigeria? Must be Trump's Fault
[American Thinker] The leftists continue to demonstrate a severe Trump Derangement Syndrome. How else do you explain a manic obsession in finding connections between everything terrible that happens in the world and President Trump, or seeing a malicious intent in his every single action and word? Planet is heating up ‐ Trump’s to blame (no, it "doesn’t matter" for the leftists that we are reducing carbon emissions.) Trump nominates a new Supreme Court Judge ‐ let’s oppose him with "whatever means necessary". Trump smiled at Putin at some formal gathering -- Putin’s puppet, obviously (no, it "doesn’t matter" that the Trump Administration is constantly introducing anti-Russian sanctions.)

Now, in the end of October, the Nigerian Army killed 45 and wounded nearly 100 protesters from the radical Shia group called Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) when they started throwing rocks at the soldiers. The leftist reaction? You guessed it ‐ it was Trump’s fault. "Nigerian Army Uses Trump’s Words to Justify Fatal Shooting of Rock-Throwing Protesters," runs the New York Times. "Nigerian Army defends killing protesters by quoting Trump. Trump’s caravan rhetoric affecting the whole world," asserts CBS. That’s right, the whole world.

So, what actually happened? The Nigerian army’s official Twitter account posted a video, "Please Watch and Make Your Deductions," showing Trump’s speech in which he said rocks would be considered firearms if thrown toward the American military at the nation’s borders as the 7,000-migrant caravan was approaching southern border of America. "We’re not going to put up with that," President Trump said. "They want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back." Nigerian army deleted the post hours later without explanation after it had caused an uproar on social media. But it was more than enough for the leftist media to "connect the dots" between the Trump’s words that suggested a decisiveness to protect American border and the lives of those who defend it with the long-lasting conflict between Sunni and secular Nigerian government.

The conflict has a long and bloody history, indeed. Nigeria is a predominantly Muslim country, and the overwhelming majority of Nigerian Muslims are Sunni. By most accounts, Shia Islam had little presence in Nigeria until the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Why Suburban Women Cost the Republicans the House
[American Thinker] Did suburban women cost the Republicans the House of Representatives?

Most suburban women can be easily persuaded to vote for Democrats because they do not think seriously. Serious thinking in the political sense is concerned with where we are going as a nation, our moral values, our long-term prosperity, our security, our freedom and its inherent responsibilities. G.K. Chesterton said, "Thinking means connecting things, and stops if they cannot be connected" (Orthodoxy, 1908).

Don’t get me wrong ‐ there are many intelligent, serious conservative women in Fairfax County (not to mention the nation as a whole), but they are sadly in the minority. From my limited and unscientific perspective, the reason most suburban women voted for Democrats can be divided into three categories:

In Palm Beach County, Democrats Argue To Count Votes Cast By Non-Citizens
[The Federalist] Something is rotten in Palm Beach County Florida elections, where Democrats want to count votes cast by non-citizens.

During review of provisional ballots to determine whether a recount is justified in the tight Florida governor, senate, and agriculture commission races, Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher identified a voter as a non-citizen and declared that the ballot would not be counted.

Attorneys representing the Democratic candidate for senate Bill Nelson and the Democratic candidate for governor Andrew Gillum objected. A copy of the uncertified transcript shows the interaction.

DRC says Ebola outbreak worst in country's recorded history
[Al Jazeera] The Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
(DRC) is facing its worst Ebola outbreak in the country's recorded history, health officials have said.

The announcement late on Friday came amid increasing warnings that the situation could deteriorate because of attacks by gangs and community resistance in the affected areas in eastern DRC.

Oly Ilunga Kalenga, the DRC's health minister, said a total of 319 confirmed and probable cases have been reported in North Kivu and Ituri provinces since the outbreak was declared in August.

The figure exceeds the 318 cases documented in 1976, when the deadly Ebola virus was first identified in Yambuku, in the Equateur province.

Russia: France's rule over Indian Ocean island 'illegitimate'
[PRESSTV] Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused La Belle France of snubbing United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
resolutions and illegally holding control over its former African colony, the Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte.

"Despite numerous resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly on this issue, La Belle France continues to illegitimately hold Mayotte," Lavrov said Friday at a joint presser in Moscow with Comoros Foreign Minister Souef Mohammed El Amine.

Situated between Madagascar and Mozambique, Mayotte is the single island in the Comoros archipelago that remained under French control following an independence referendum in 1974.

Although Mayotte reportedly opted to be ruled under its colonial-era power, the Comoros still claims control over it, as it is backed by several UN resolutions in a territorial dispute with La Belle France.

Lavrov further emphasized, "Countries which organized the separation of Kosovo from Serbia, Mayotte from the Comoros, and have tried several times to change regimes in countries where they considered it necessary, show blatant double standards," referring to Western countries.

Mayotte comprises two islands of Petite-Terre and Grande-Terre and currently has the administrative status of a French "department," which is almost equivalent to a county.

This entitles the island to funding and maintenance for infrastructure, medical care, as well as education just as in mainland La Belle France.

US to continue backing Saudi-led war in Yemen: Analyst
[PRESSTV] The United States will continue to back the Saudi-led coalition waging war of aggression against the people of Yemen, American journalist and political analyst Stephen Lendman says.

Media reported this week that the Saudi-led coalition waging war on Yemen had requested a cessation of joint military operations with US forces.

The US and Saudi Arabia say they have agreed to end US refueling of Saudi aircraft bombing Yemen but maintain American training and military assistance.

“The idea that the US will stop refueling Saudi warplanes is a bunch of baloney,” Lendman said in an interview with Press TV on Saturday.

Lendman told the Iranian broadcaster that despite the news the war in Yemen would be escalating to a new level.

“The war is not ending. It is escalating,” he said, adding, “The naked aggression on Yemen would continue.”

The author said that the war was being run by the Americans and the Saudi-led forces were proxies. “The US is actively engaged in the war. It is a US war, not a Saudi war. The Saudis and UAE are US proxies.”

Lendman said harming the Yemeni people was part of the strategy,” adding that, the whole aggression – “including not treating diseases, including starving them, including murdering them, including attacking residential neighborhood, hospitals, schools, mosques, agricultural land, market places” -- was orchestrated by the US, the UK, and France.

7 soldiers killed at ammunition depot blast in Turkey
[NYPOST] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s president said Saturday that at least seven soldiers were killed and 25 others maimed in an kaboom at an ammunition depot at a base in the southeast.

The Defense Ministry previously said on Friday that 25 soldiers were maimed and seven others were missing following an unexplained accident during the firing of heavy weapons ammunition. The blast occurred at a base in Hakkari province, bordering Iraq and Iran. The base is mainly used for operations targeting outlawed Kurdish rebels.

President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
‐ speaking at a memorial marking the 80th anniversary of the death of the Ottoman Turkish republic’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk ‐ said the incident involved an ammunition depot kaboom and resulted in four deaths. He later told news hounds before departing for Gay Paree that seven soldiers were killed and 25 others were maimed in the kaboom.

Four of the maimed were at death's door and were being evacuated by helicopter to a hospital in Ankara, Erdogan said. The others were hospitalized in Hakkari province.

The president said the cause of the blast was under investigation.

Iraq
Shaken by Car Bomb, Mosul Fears Return of IS Nightmares
[An Nahar] A deadly boom-mobile in Iraq's djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the first since the city was recaptured from jihadists, has left residents shaken and terrified that past nightmares are returning to haunt them.

The blast late on Thursday hit the popular Abu Layla restaurant in Mosul, the northern city that for three years served as the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group's Iraq headquarters.

When residents awoke to the scene of destruction on Friday morning, they feared their bloody past with IS was not yet behind them.

"We were liberated, so we thought that security was back," Mossab, a 25-year-old restaurant employee, told AFP.

"But now it's worse than ever."

Three people were killed and 12 maimed in the bombing, medical and security sources said.

The restaurant suffered significant damage. One side, which sits on a road junction, seemed to have its windows blown out and the facade partly sheared off.

The cars in the street all had shattered or cracked windscreens and were covered in black ash and debris.

Mossab's car, parked nearby, was one of them.

"I've been working for four years to save up to buy it, but it all went in the blink of an eye," he said, devastated.

Iraqi security forces deployed outside the restaurant on Friday, standing guard as cleaning crews worked to remove the debris.

Residents nervously came to inspect the damage.

Khodor Ali, a 38-year-old who lives nearby, was worried there would be more violence.

"If the security situation stays like this, then our future is in the gutter," he told AFP.

Texas Man Admits Stealing 650 Guns from Missouri UPS
[Guns.com] A Texas man admitted this week he helped steal hundreds of firearms from a United Parcel Service in Missouri last year.

Quinton Haywood, 27, faces 20 years in prison without parole after pleading guilty Tuesday in federal court to taking a shipment of Beretta firearms ‐ including 600 .380-caliber handguns and 54 12-gauge shotguns ‐ bound for a Bass Pro Shop back in October 2017.

Haywood’s co-defendants ‐ Frank McChriston, 33; Keith Lowe, 28; Eric White, 26; and Derrick White, 32 ‐ have not yet entered any pleas, according to court filings.

Federal investigators allege Haywood and the four other men broke into the UPS facility in Springfield, hot-wired two truck-tractors and used the vehicles to move trailers around the lot, thwarting security measures taken by staff. The men then gained access to two trailers containing the guns, a pallet of Justin Brand boots, a dozen cases of soda and "numerous power tools."

The day after the heist, the men stole a moving truck from Best Way Moving & Storage. The truck was found a week later more than 430 miles away in Seagoville, Texas.

Investigators used cell phone tower records to connect the suspects to the UPS facility and the location of the stolen moving truck, according to court documents.

Authorities arrested Eric and Derrick White at Redneck Heaven Restaurant & Bar in Arlington, Texas on Nov. 19, 2017 on outstanding warrants. During the encounter, police found a stolen .380-caliber handgun in Derrick White’s car, as well as an unopened Milwaukee M18 2 Toll Combo Kit and two unopened SOG folding knives.

Investigators also found a Taurus 9mm pistol, two sets of bolt cutters and two key rings in Eric White’s car. The keys matched a type "commonly used for tractor trailer trucks and fork lifts," according to the Department of Justice.

Daily subway jostling turns deadly for elderly professor
[NYT] An elderly Manhattan couple out for some Saturday afternoon shopping collided with a straphanger dashing to make a train ‐ and the results were deadly.

The jostling, a daily underground hazard, happened on the downtown No. 3 platform at 34th Street-Penn Station as Kurt Salzinger and his wife Deanna Chitayat got off the subway around 3 p.m. on their way to Macy’s.

"A guy rushing, running to meet the train swiped Kurt, like pushed him and me," Chitayat said.

"[Kurt] ... fell on the platform and lay there like a dead man, not moving."

Chitayat, who also fell, saw the man ‐ whom she described as slim and athletic-looking ‐ keep going.

"He stopped and looked at Kurt and saw him laying there and then jumped into the car," she said.

Other kind-hearted riders rushed to his aide, including a nurse who took tissues out of her bag to apply to his wounds.

The fall caused bleeding in the 89-year-old grandfather’s brain. He developed pneumonia. The comatose Salzinger died Thursday, 12 days after the Oct. 27 incident.

"He died because of that guy," said Chitayat, who is 85. "I don’t think he meant to kill him, but he killed him."

Salzinger was a distinguished psychology professor and researcher whose family escaped Austria in 1938 right after the Nazis marched in. They traveled on the Trans Siberian Railroad through Russia to reach Japan and eventually Seattle.

They arrived in New York City when Salzinger was 12.

"He could hardly speak a word of English and two years later he was accepted at the Bronx High School of Science," Chitayat said.

Salzinger went on to study at New York University and Columbia University where he received a doctorate in 1954. He was professor emeritus of psychology at Hofstra University where he had also served as a senior scholar in residence.

He had been executive director for science at the American Psychological Association and served as president of the New York Academy of Sciences.

Salzinger wrote 14 books and 200 journal articles and his research interests included behavior analysis of people as well as dogs, rats and goldfish.

A father of four children from an earlier marriage, Salzinger cut a dashing figure with a full mane of white hair.

He posted a photo with his arm around Chitayat on his Facebook page a few years ago, writing "Am I a lucky guy!!" They had been married 38 years.

Chitayat, who is also a psychologist and was a dean at Hofstra, said the couple attended the theater and concerts and recently returned from a trip to California.

When a neighbor in their Upper West Side building heard what happened, she wrote an appeal looking for witnesses which was posted on the West Side Rag blog.

"He survived the Nazis, but he didn’t survive going to Macy’s," the neighbor, Deborah Hautzig, said.

The NYPD said it is investigating and asked anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS or 1-888-57-PISTA for Spanish.

Chitayat said the NYPD told her that the surveillance cameras on the platform did not capture the incident.

She said she doesn’t want revenge or to see the man go to jail.

"But what I want him to do is to realize what he did, to remember it and to feel guilty," she said. "He destroyed a person’s life to rush for a train."

Brent Oil Drops under $70 for First Time since April
[An Nahar] Oil prices and stock markets slumped Friday, with Brent North Sea crude tumbling under $70, while the dollar strengthened as the Federal Reserve flagged more US interest rate hikes.

Brent struck a seven-month low points on surging US energy stockpiles before a weekend meeting of major oil producing nations.

European and Asian stock markets slid as a rally triggered by unsurprising US midterm election results faded further.

In midday deals, London's benchmark FTSE 100 index lost 0.8 percent, as markets waited also on a Brexit deal to smooth Britannia's exit from the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
.

In the eurozone, Frankfurt's DAX 30 index dropped 0.6 percent and the Gay Paree CAC 40 retreated 1.0 percent, also as worries resurfaced over Italia's troubled economy.

US stock markets closed mostly lower Thursday, with Asian equities following suit on Friday.

Tokyo ended down 1.1 percent. Hong Kong shed 2.4 percent and Shanghai finished 1.4 percent lower, also after data showed another drop in Chinese factory prices, while tech firms were hit by a series of weak earnings results from mainland firms.

Benchmark oil contract, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in January, slumped to $69.13 per barrel, the lowest level since April.

It later recovered to $69.75, but still down almost a dollar since Thursday's close.

New York's West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for December tanked to a February low of $59.28 per barrel -- later trading at $59.82.

both of these were $10 higher just two weeks ago

the most interesting thing is that the US is now producing about 11.5 million bpd and probably will hit 12 M bpd by the middle of next year and maybe 13 M bpd by mid 2020

this makes up for the decrease in Iran's sales

Florida orders recount in contentious senate, governor races
[Al Jazeera] Authorities in Florida have ordered a machine recount of votes in its neck-and-neck race for the US senate seat and governor's office amid allegations of fraud from the candidates.

State Secretary Ken Detzner said Florida's 67 counties will submit unofficial totals by 17:00 GMT on Saturday, while the results will be declared by 20:00 GMT on Thursday.

The announcement was made after unofficial results in both races fell within the margin that triggers a recount, according to the state's law.

In the race for governor, former US Representative Ron DeSantis led his Democrat rival and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum by a margin of 0.41 percent.

For the senate seat, Florida's current Republican Governor Rick Scott has seen his lead narrow over incumbent Senator Bill Nelson, a Democrat, to about 12,500 votes, or 0.15 percent.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Jihadists Kill 8 Syria Troops near Truce Zone
[AnNahar] Jihadists have killed at least eight Syrian government troops near a planned buffer zone around the country's last major rebel bastion, a monitor said on Saturday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the attack took place late on Friday in the north of Hama province near the planned buffer zone around rebel-held territory in neighbouring Idlib.

The attack was led by fighters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
, an alliance led by Syria's former al-Qaeda branch which is the dominant force in Idlib, the Britannia-based monitoring group said.

"An assault by HTS targeted a Syrian regime position on the outskirts of the de-militarised zone" and was followed by festivities in which eight regime forces were killed, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. Two jihadists also died.

Rebel factions have said they withdrew their heavy weapons from the zone but HTS and other hardline groups have refused to pull out their fighters.

The deadly jihadist assault came hours after government troops killed 23 fighters of a formerly US-backed rebel group inside the planned buffer zone.

Idlib and some adjacent areas are the last major rebel bastion in Syria, where the Russian-backed government has in recent months retaken much of the territory it had lost since the civil war erupted.

It had threatened an assault on rebel territory around Idlib, which is home to some three million people, but the truce deal struck by Russia and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
averted it.

Aid organizations had warned that a fully-fledged offensive on Idlib could spark the worst humanitarian catastrophe of the civil war so far.

More than 360,000 people have been killed and millions displaced since the conflict erupted with the brutal repression of anti-government protests in 2011.

fighters earlier this week.

The AFP news agency reported on Saturday that Yemeni soldiers captured the May 22 hospital in the city's eastern suburbs, which had been turned into a sniper position by Houthi fighters - in violation of international law.

A source in the city told Al Jazeera that Yemeni forces, numbering in the thousands, had also seized the Faculty of Engineering building of Hodeidah University, which sits just 4km from the city's vital port.

The source said the city's streets, which would normally be heaving with people and traffic on Saturday, were empty with the sound of shelling a near constant in the background.

Hodeidah, a large city on Yemen's Red Sea coast, is the latest battleground between the Houthis and a Saudi-UAE military alliance who have been fighting for control over the country for the past three and a half years.

Since November 3, there have been more than 200 air strikes reported in the city, with at least 150 confirmed deaths.

The Houthi-affiliated al-Masirah news outlet said more than 30 air raids were carried out in the neighbourhood of the hospital on Friday, killing at least two civilians, including a girl, and leaving at least 15 other civilians maimed.

The report could not be independently verified.

"Our people, with their full-scale defense of Hudaydah, once again have proved that Yemen will be a graveyard for the aggressors," Mohammed Abdulsalam said in a tweet late Friday..

Saudi-backed gunnies announced on Friday that they had begun a military operation to take over Hudaydah, claiming that they had advanced towards the northern and the western flanks of the port city.

Abdulsalam dismissed the claims, saying the aggressors had already failed to achieve any of their objectives due to the "exemplary steadfastness" of the Yemeni people.

"The American-British-Israeli coalition, along with domestic and foreign mercenaries and Death Eaters groups, including ISIS and al-Qaeda ... have failed to achieve any of their objectives after four years of aggression, due to the exemplary steadfastness of the nation," he tweeted.

Five AJK civilians injured in 'unprovoked' Indian firing across LoC
[DAWN] At least five civilians have been injured in Azad Jammu and Kashmire (AJK) due to "unprovoked" firing by Indian troops across the restive Line of Control (LoC), the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

Indian forces first targeted the civilian population in Leepa sector using heavy-calibre weapons, the ISPR said. Four citizens named Zaheer, Nasir, Munir and Shaukat, who reside in Bijildar and Battlian villages, sustained serious injuries.

In an update on the cross-border firing, the ISPR said a fifth civilian, 20-year-old Tania Bibi of Gujrakh village, was injured in Bagsar sector near AJK's Bhimber district.

"Pak Army effectively responded [to the firing] by targeting Indian posts," the statement added.

Today's violence comes two days after a sepoy of Pakistain Army was martyred due to unprovoked firing by Indian troops in the Thub sector.

Though India and Pakistain are signatories to a November 2003 truce, the LoC and Working Boundary have consistently witnessed ceasefire violations for more than two years now.

The Grand Turk
Ankara gave out 'recordings' on Khashoggi murder to Riyadh, Washington
[PRESSTV] President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
says The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has given "recordings" on the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the United States, Germany, La Belle France, and Britannia.

In a televised speech on Saturday, Erdogan said Saudi Arabia knew the killer of Khashoggi was among a group of 15 people who arrived in Turkey one day ahead of the October 2 murder.

"We gave the recordings, we gave them to Saudi Arabia, we gave them to Washington, to the Germans, to the French, to the English," the Ottoman Turkish president said. "They listened to the conversations which took place here, they know."
So the Turks had either the embassy or Khashoggi bugged...
Erdogan said there were no written documents.

The contents of the gruesome recording allegedly prove that Khashoggi was grabbed, drugged and dismembered with a bone saw. The voice attributed to a Saudi forensic evidence chief also suggests that others witnessing Khashoggi’s harrowing fate listened to music in order to drown out the sounds.

In a November 2 op-ed for the Washington Post, the Ottoman Turkish president said there were still many "questions" for Saudi Arabia to answer regarding the killing of Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Ottoman Turkish judicial sources have said that Khashoggi was "strangled" as soon as he entered the diplomatic mission and his body was then "cut into pieces" under a "premeditated plan."

The body of Khashoggi remains missing and a joint Ottoman Turkish-Saudi investigation into Khashoggi’s fate has made little progress so far.

Europe
Police in Barcelona clash with protesting Catalan separatists
[PRESSTV] Police in Barcelona have briefly clashed with Catalan separatists who are protesting a rally by Spain's national police forces in the Mediterranean city.

Catalan regional police used batons to drive back a group of separatists in the city center on Saturday, stopping them from advancing toward a march by an association of Spain's national police forces demanding higher pay.

Separatists resent the national police for using violence against voters in the unauthorized Catalan independence referendum that took place on October 1, 2017.

In September, a similar protest by separatists of another march by the same national police association ended in festivities with regional security forces. The violent run-ins left 14 people injured and six arrests.

Spain has been mired in a political crisis since last year, when Catalonia's separatist politicians failed in a breakaway bid. Polls and recent elections show that the wealthy northeastern region's 7.5 million residents are roughly equally divided by the secession question.

Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al-Madinah & Meccah
Volume 2

Sir Richard F. Burton
Dover Publications, 2011

Short review, as only about half of this book is the continuation of Sir Burton’s travels, the remainder being various appendices.

I will say that I am glad I read the remainder of the journal. I do not like a story unfinished.

Perhaps it was the length of time between readings; I found the remaining story bordering between unseemly infatuation and tedium.

Page 26-27

The classical Arabic, be it observed, in consequence of an extended empire, soon split up into various dialects, as the Latin under similar circumstances separated into the Neo-Roman patois of Italy, Sicily, Provence, and Languedoc. And though Niebuhr has been deservedly censured for comparing the Koranic language to Latin and the vulgar tongue to Italian, still there is a great difference between them, almost every word having undergone some alteration in addition to the manifold changes and simplifications of grammar and syntax. The traveler will hear in every part of Arabia that some distant tribe preserves the linguistic purity of its ancestors, uses final vowels with the noun, and rejects the addition of the pronoun which apocope in the verb now renders necessary. But I greatly doubt the existence of such a race of philologists. In Al-Hijaz, however, it is considered graceful in an old man, especially when conversing publicly, to lean towards classical Arabic. On the contrary, in a youth this would be treated was pedantic affection, and condemned in some such satiric quotation as, There are two things colder than ice, A young old man, and an old young man.""

Sir Burton continues on his epic journey, commenting as only he can.

Pages 254-255

Maulid Hamzah, a little building at the old Bab Umrah, near the Shabayki cemetery. Here was the Bazan, or channel down which the Ayn Hunayn ran into the Birkat Majid. Many authorities doubt that Hamzah was born at this place.

The reader must now be as tired of "Pious Visitation" as I was.

Indeed. This book is not for everyone, but for those with such an interest it really is a fascinating read, especially the early chapters of "Getting there".

It would be my suggestion that, if a person were looking for a read today, I would suggest History and Rhymes of The Lost Battalion, by Buck Private McCollum. There is a digital version as well as a tree version. The movie The Lost Battalion starring Rick Schroder. I don't think that movie ever got the mainstream acclaim it should have. It isn't a kid’s movie, but it also isn't laden with profanity which all too often passes for witty dialogue in modern war setting movies. Unfortunately I do not see it available by streaming, though I may be doing it wrong. If you like these types of movies at $8 (standard DVD) you can't go wrong.

China-Japan-Koreas
2 Koreas Complete the Disarming of 22 Guard Posts
[AnNahar] The North and South Korean militaries completed withdrawing troops and firearms from 22 front-line guard posts on Saturday as they continue to implement a wide-ranging agreement reached in September to reduce tensions across the world's most fortified border, a South Korean Defense Ministry official said.

South Korea says the military agreement is an important trust-building step that would help stabilize peace and advance reconciliation between the rivals. But critics say the South risks conceding some of its conventional military strength before North Korea takes any meaningful steps on denuclearization ‐ an anxiety that's growing as the larger nuclear negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang seemingly drift into a stalemate.

South Korea reportedly has about 60 guard posts ‐ bunker-like concrete structures surrounded with layers of barbed-wire fences and manned by soldiers equipped with machine guns ‐ stretched across the ironically named Demilitarized Zone.

The 248-kilometer (155-mile) border buffer peppered with millions of land mines has been the site of occasional skirmishes between the two forces since the 1950-53 Korean War. The North is believed to have about 160 guard posts within the DMZ.

In the September military agreement, reached on the sidelines of a summit in Pyongyang between North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the Koreas pledged to eventually withdraw all guard posts within the DMZ, but to start by removing 11 from each side as a "preliminary" measure.

Pyongyang insists that sanctions should be removed before there is any progress in nuclear negotiations, while Washington says they will remain until the North takes concrete steps toward irreversibly and verifiably relinquishing its weapons.
The South Korean Defense Ministry official said soldiers on Saturday completed disarming 11 guard posts on the southern side of the DMZ. He said the ministry believes the North has also finished withdrawing personnel and weapons from 11 guard posts on the northern side of the DMZ. He didn't want to be named, citing office rules.

The Koreas plan to destroy 20 of the structures by the end of November, while symbolically leaving one demilitarized guard post on each side. They plan to jointly verify the results in December.

The Koreas also in the September deal agreed to create buffer zones along their land and sea boundaries and a no-fly zone above the border, which took effect on Nov. 1.

The Koreas and the U.S.-led U.N. Command recently finished removing firearms and troops from a jointly controlled area at the border village of Panmunjom and eventually plan to allow tourists to freely move around there. The Koreas have also been clearing mines from front-line areas and plan to start in April their first-ever joint search for remains of soldiers killed during the Korean War.

While the Korean militaries move ahead with tension-reducing steps, Moon is otherwise running out of goodwill gestures toward North Korea, which is under heavy U.S.-led sanctions over its nuclear weapons program. Unless the sanctions are lifted, it would be impossible for Moon to push ahead with his more ambitious plans for engagement, such as reconnecting railways and roads across the border and normalizing operations at a jointly run factory park.

Pyongyang insists that sanctions should be removed before there is any progress in nuclear negotiations, while Washington says they will remain until the North takes concrete steps toward irreversibly and verifiably relinquishing its weapons.

Analysts say the discord may have caused the last-minute cancellation of a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol, that had been scheduled for this past Thursday to discuss denuclearization issues and setting up a second summit between Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...

[DAWN] The Pakistain Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Saturday that the agreement which gave franchise rights of Multan

A joint statement issued by the PCB and Schon Properties Broker LLC said all rights in respect of the sixth Pakistain Super League (PSL) team have reverted back to the board as a result of the agreement's termination.

"The termination was brought about due to the former franchisee’s inability to meet its financial obligations under the agreement," the statement revealed.

The PCB statement confirms that the fourth edition of PSL will go ahead as planned with six teams and the same number of matches.

"The board shall take complete responsibility of all player and coach contracts," it said, adding that pending further updates, the team will be referred to as "The Sixth Team" of PSL.

The team selection for the Sixth Team at the player draft scheduled for November 20 will be done by the PCB itself, according to the statement.

A public tender process will then be started to grant repackaged rights of the team, the board has stated.

"The rights holder would have the option of choosing the sixth franchise city and name," said PCB.

Asher Schon of the Schon Group was quoted as saying in the statement: "It has been a privilege being a PSL team owner over the past year. I am proud of the support Schon has always extended to Pakistain cricket and current affairs notwithstanding, will continue to passionately support it."

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani said the dissolution of the agreement was unfortunate, but that it was necessary that the contract obligations are abided by.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
After IS, Damascus Suburb Residents Blocked from Going Home
Ownership is such a fluid concept in that part of the world. How this reflects on the claims of the Palestinians is left as an exercise for the reader.
[AnNahar] nullnullAbu Mohammed thought he could finally go home after jihadists were expelled from his Damascus suburb, but he says Syrian authorities have blocked his return by wrongly classifying his dwelling as unfit to live in.

In May, regime forces turfed the Islamic State group out of a chunk of the capital's southern Tadamun neighbourhood with a campaign of air strikes and shelling.

For the first time in six years that meant full government control was restored over the area, bringing with it a calm that sparked hopes of a homecoming. But instead, Abu Mohammed and others from Tadamun complain, the authorities have deemed many residences unfit, and are blocking their owners from returning ahead of a controversial redevelopment plan.

Five months after IS was forced out, regime barrages impede access to the former jihadist stronghold now under tight security, and an AFP team was unable to enter.

But because Tadamun is an informal neighbourhood, only 10 percent of the homes have officially registered property deeds.
The neighbourhood of Tadamun has long been in a grey zone. Once orchards, it has been populated since the late 1960s by people who fled the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights or flooded into Damascus from the countryside, often without official permission to build there. But today its fate seems particularly uncertain after provincial authorities last month announced it would be affected by a controversial development law.

The law, known as Decree 10, allows the government to seize private property to create zoned developments, compensating owners with shares of the new projects. If their land is selected, owners inevitably lose their property and must apply to receive shares in exchange.

Construction is not set to start in Tadamun for several years, but officials have already been dispatched to inspect its homes. A provincial commission has been charged with evaluating damage and rating whether around 25,000 residential units are fit for human habitation. Even if their homes are declared up to standard, no resident can move back until further notice.

Tadamun was overrun by rebels in 2012, then part of it fell three years later to the jihadists of IS.

Over the years, most residents were forced to flee their homes, and just 65,000 people live there today, compared to 250,000 before the outbreak of the war in 2011.

Homes that are declared fit for habitation are given a serial number and sealed with red wax and officials insist that the owners can reclaim them easily.

A resident can "get (their house) back normally after proving ownership", Tadamun mayor Ahmed Iskandar told AFP, talking by a portrait of President Bashar al-Assad in military uniform and sunglasses.

But because Tadamun is an informal neighbourhood, only 10 percent of the homes have officially registered property deeds -- and that is if they have not been lost during the war. Most of the others from the area only have semi-official papers showing residency.

Even for those who do manage to return, the respite appears only temporary. Eventually reconstruction, set to start in four to five years, should see the whole area razed to the ground.

Then too, no more than a tenth of the suburb's population will ever be able to present property deeds to receive shares in the reconstruction project.

But inspection commission head Srour said those who could not prove ownership -- likely at least 90 percent of residents -- would not be made homeless.

"We won't throw people out into the street, but provide them with compensation or alternative housing," he said.

Norwegian residents complain of NATO troops pooping in public amid war games
[PRESSTV] Halfway through NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
's large-scale Trident Juncture 18 war games, Norwegian residents have already filed nearly 500 complaints against participating soldiers, alleging damage to local infrastructure, trampled farmland, traffic accidents and public defecation.

The complaints have been sent to the Norwegian Armed Forces, which have set up an "Environment and Damage Department" to keep track of exercise-related incidents disturbing the local population.

Trident Juncture Spokesman Eystein Malkenes Kvarving, speaking to the Norway-based NRK channel, apologized for the mishaps and promised for the complaints to be taken seriously.

"Sometimes unfortunate things happen which are not planned. Of course, it is not okay for people to relieve themselves in public areas. I would like to apologize for it."

Furthermore, Environment and Damage Department head Marianne Bo detailed that complaints about public defecation were primarily about incidents that had occurred near schools and sports facilities by allegedly American and Swedish soldiers.

"This is terrible, it's about having common decency. We have to clean up after soldiers who have relieved themselves," adding that "we actually have a system for treating this. The soldiers bring their equipment to clean up afterwards. But next time we have a major exercise, we must tighten this."

The exercises also made headlines on Thursday after a Norwegian Navy frigate collided with an oil tanker near an island chain off Norway's western coast, injuring seven crew members. The damaged ship has since been abandoned and is awaiting further assistance.

U.S. Mail Bomb Suspect Indicted on 30 Counts in New York
[An Nahar] U.S. prosecutors in New York on Friday indicted the Florida man accused of sending pipe bombs to critics of Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
with crimes that carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The 56-year-old, who lived in a van plastered with pro-Trump and anti-Democrat stickers before his October 26 arrest, was previously hit with a five-count complaint in the sunshine state.

The registered Republican, who has a criminal history and reported past as a stripper, was subsequently flown to New York and appeared in a Manhattan court earlier this week, before the 30-count indictment was unveiled.

Sayoc now stands accused of mailing 16 bombs, despite law enforcement officials previously alleging that he sent 11 critics of the U.S. president a total of 13 different devices.

The charges include five counts of use of a weapon of mass destruction for each pipe bomb mailed to and intercepted in the New York area, targeting billionaire liberal donor George Soros
...either Ernst Stavro Blofeld or Auric Goldfinger come true...
, former Democratic presidential nominee Perennial Presidential Campaigner Hillary Crooked Hillary Clinton
... former first lady, former secretary of state, former presidential candidate, Conqueror of Benghazi, Heroine of Tuzla, formerly described by her supporters as the smartest woman in the world, usually described by the rest of us as The Thing That Wouldn't Go Away...
, actor Robert de Niro, former CIA director John Brennan and former intelligence chief James Clapper.

Sayoc is charged five times with interstate transportation and receipt of explosives and five times with threatening interstate communications.

Allegedly included with the bombs were a print-out or photograph of his intended victim marked with a red X.

Sayoc was also charged five times with illegal mailing of explosives, five times with use of explosives to commit a felony and five times with use of a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Outside the New York area, Sayoc is also accused of sending other pipe bombs to former president Barack Obama
Ready to Rule from Day One...
, former vice president Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body...
and others.

The attempted bombings fanned tensions across the United States ahead of this week's midterm elections, which saw Trump retain control of the Senate but the Democrats win the majority in the lower House of Representatives.
After all that, no mention that his mother said he’s had mental health issues for decades... Not that it really matters: as my girlfriend with the schizophrenic son discovered, whether the verdict is Innocent by reason of insanity or Guilty but insanethe sentence is nonetheless exactly the same as for miscreants who are mentally sound.

The Grand Turk
Report: Khashoggi Corpse Went Down the Drains
The latest theory...
[AnNahar] The killers of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi poured his remains down the drain after dissolving him in acid, a Ottoman Turkish newspaper reported Saturday.

Samples taken from the drains at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul showed traces of acid, pro-government daily Sabah said, without quoting sources.

This led Sherlocks to believe the dead body of the insider-turned-critic of the Riyadh regime was disposed of through the drains as liquid, the paper said.

Khashoggi was last seen entering the consulate on October 2 to obtain documents for his forthcoming marriage. His body has never been found.

After repeated denials, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
finally admitted the 59-year-old had been murdered at the mission in a "rogue" operation.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
has accused the "highest levels" of the Saudi government of ordering the hit, while some officials have pointed the finger at the all-powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia as of 2016....
A Ottoman Turkish official this week confirmed a Sabah report that chemicals expert Ahmad Abdulaziz al-Janobi and toxicology expert Khaled Yahya al-Zahrani were among a team sent from Saudi amid investigations into the murder.

The paper said they visited the consulate every day from their arrival on October 11 until October 17. Saudi Arabia only allowed Ottoman Turkish police to search the building on October 15.

Libya's Haftar meets UK ambassador near Benghazi to discuss Palermo Conference
[Libya Observer] The commander of the self-proclaimed army in eastern Libya, Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, met with the UK ambassador Frank Baker on Friday in al-Rajma - east of Benghazi.

Baker and Haftar talked about the forthcoming Palermo Conference in Italia and recent developments in the Libyan crisis, the media office of Haftar's command reported.

The meeting came after Haftar had returned from Russia, where he met military officials, including the defense minister.

Rome reported Friday that Haftar confirmed his attendance to the conference after the Italian external intelligence chief carried out a flying visit to Moscow on Thursday, Aki stated.

EU also confirmed that its High Representative of the for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini will be present at the Palermo Conference on Libya.

The EU said the conference will aim at finding a solution to end the political deadlock in Libya and help boost and support the efforts of the UNSMIL in that regard, in addition to discussing elections and security and economic reforms.

Government
Newly Unsealed Documents Show Top FDIC Officials Running Operation Choke Point
From early last week. Much more detail about this story from two weeks ago
[Forbes] Last week brought new revelations regarding Operation Choke Point, the Obama administration’s effort to freeze politically disfavored businesses out of the financial system. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-Mo.), who helped lead a multi-year effort to shut the program down, highlighted some of theses newest findings and pointed out that stopping Operation Choke Point is not a partisan issue.

Luetkemeyer’s legislation to prevent a redo of Choke Point – The Financial Institution Customer Protection Act of 2017 – overwhelmingly passed the House, with only two nay votes. Operation Choke Point was an egregious affront to the rule of law, so it is good to see that so many lawmakers want to prevent a repeat.

For those unfamiliar, Choke Point consisted of bureaucrats in several independent federal agencies taking it upon themselves to shut legal businesses – such as payday lenders and firearms dealers – out of the banking system. Given the nature of the U.S. regulatory framework, this operation was easy to pull off.

group in eastern Syria, a Britannia-based war monitor said.

"Twenty-six IS family members including 14 children and 9 women were killed in coalition air strikes on Friday morning on the town of Hajin," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

On Thursday, coalition raids killed another seven civilians in the nearby village of al-Shaafa, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Both Hajin and al-Shaafa are in a last pocket under IS control in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor near the border with Iraq.

A coalition front man did not immediately reply for a request for comment.

The coalition has been backing a Kurdish-Arab alliance fighting the jihadists in the area.

IS overran large swathes of Syria and neighboring Iraq in 2014, proclaiming a "caliphate" in land it controlled.

But the jihadist group has since lost most of it to various offensives in both countries.

In Syria, the group has seen its presence reduced to parts of the vast Badia desert and the pocket in Deir Ezzor.

Report underlines flaws in LHC’s new case management system
[DAWN] A report, prepared by the urgent cell of the Lahore High Court (LHC), has termed the computerised Case Flow Management System (CFMS) introduced in the court in April 2017 not user-friendly, saying it consumes more time in fixation of cases and requires more manpower than the previous computer system.

The report, available with Dawn, states that since the inception of the CFMS, a lot of problems ’created by default’ with this system are still pending. It says the new system shows incorrect pendency data of the cases and contempt petitions are not being auto-fixed with reference to criminal or civil cases before the benches concerned. Another problem is that intra-court appeals (ICAs) are sometime auto-fixed before the single bench instead of division bench and often before that single/division bench against whom that ICA can’t be filed as per law.

The report also points out a chronic problem being faced from the first day is that during the filing of a contempt petition, if the bench concerned is not available at principal seat, the petition, during fixation, goes to ’schedule error’ in the CFMS, which means that the fixation of that case faces a prolonged undue delay. Similarly, whenever two or more civil miscellaneous applications are filed in an ICA, the computerised system auto-fixes the applications before single benches instead of division benches if the bench concerned is not available at the principal seat. Sometimes, whenever, at the time of publication of urgent cause list, the list of a court has to be cancelled to be fixed before other courts, the computer system does not auto-fix the whole list in one command.

The report notes another mind-boggling problem of the new system. When a case has to be transferred from one bench to another, the system fixes the same before a strange bench instead of the targeted bench.

"Last but not least, when the urgent cell completes fixation and puts the lists for publication, a lot of time is consumed for sequencing the same list by the CFMS which results in undue delay in sending of urgent peshi to courts," the report concludes.
