-Short Attention Span Theater-
Today's Idiot
A day after deaf advocacy groups criticized a sign language interpreter, saying her signing made no sense during a press conference announcing the arrest of an alleged Tampa serial killer, there's a new twist.

Derlyn Roberts, 53, - who signed alongside Tampa police officials - has a criminal past. Records show Roberts was released from state prison last year after being convicted in 2012 for organized fraud over $50,000 and fraudulent use of personal information.
It seems like she misses her friends there.
More irony? The Tampa Police Department was the arresting agency.

Just who sent Roberts to interpret at the press conference is still a mystery.

According to Tampa police spokesman Stephen Hegarty, law enforcement officials did not request an interpreter for the news conference, which started around 11 p.m. Nov. 28.

"As we were getting ready to start, I was told that a sign language interpreter was outside," Hegarty told the Miami Herald. "My reaction was: 'I didn't call an interpreter, but great that someone did.' It appeared that she was very well known in Tampa, but I just didn't ask enough questions. There was a lot going on but it was my responsibility, so shame on me."

Added Hegarty: "We did the public a disservice and I am very sorry."

The department is investigating.

During the press conference, Roberts was supposed to relay what Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan was saying about Howell Emanuel Donaldson III, who was arrested and charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of four people in the Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa since October.

Rachelle Settambrino, a sign language teacher at the University of South Florida, told the Tampa Bay Times that when Dugan said his agency received around 5,000 tips about the four murders, Roberts signed something along the lines of "fifty-one hours ago, zero 12 22 [gibberish] murder three minutes in 14 weeks ago in old [gibberish] four five 55,000 plea 10 arrest murder bush [gibberish] three age 24."

The killings began on Oct. 9 with the shooting death of Benjamin Mitchell, 22, who was at a bus stop in front of his home. The second victim, Monica Hoffa, 32, was killed on Oct. 11. Her body was found two days later by a city employee in a vacant parking lot near where Mitchell was slain.

On Oct. 19, Anthony Naiboa, a 20-year-old with autism who had just graduated from high school, was found shot to death about 50 feet away from the bus stop where Mitchell died. Ronald Felton, 60, was the fourth victim. He was found Nov. 14.

China-Japan-Koreas
The US just upped the ante on simulated bomb runs on North Korea
I'll bet they didn't see that one coming.
• The US responded to North Korea's latest missile launch with a simulated bomb run from a B-1B Lancer bomber and an F-22 in a marked escalation in military signaling.

• North Korea hates the B-1 bomb runs and have threatened to shoot the plane down.

• The US's F-22 is fully stealth and North Korea likely can't hope to down it.

• With the US's most lethal planes doing the signaling, it's unclear how much higher tensions can rise.

The US carried out another simulated bomb run with a supersonic B-1B bomber on Wednesday, but this time it included the US's top-of-the-line air superiority fighter, the F-22, according to Yonhap.

B-1 flights represent the US's go-to response for North Korean provocations, such as missile tests, and the bomber flights draw a strong, sometimes dangerously escalating response from Pyongyang.

Previously, North Korea threatened to shoot down B-1s flying even outside its airspace and to loft missiles at Guam, where the B-1s are based.

But North Korea has a problem there. It apparently can't track the B-1 in flight because of its outdated radar and air-defense systems, according to NK News.

The F-22 is the world's stealthiest aircraft, meaning it's extremely unlikely North Korea could see it coming.

The combined B-1 and F-22 drill represents a step up in the normal tit-for-tat between the US and North Korea. It also comes during the Vigilant Ace aerial exercise that China and Russia warned the US about.

"Through the exercise, the South Korean and US air forces have demonstrated the alliance's strong will and capability for strong retaliation against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats," South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, according to Yonhap.

But with the US using its best planes to message North Korea, and Pyongyang demonstrating missiles that experts assess can hit anywhere in the US, it's unclear just how much higher tensions on the Korean Peninsula could escalate.
Feeling a little squeezed lately, Kimmie?

#1  Heretofore, our resources expended on The Process™, now in its 6th decade, has given little in return. Theater, mostly, with occasional "Presidents Peering Across the Border" Photo-Ops.

Delays of the inevitable consume resources, all the while grinding forward to the unavoidable; we now have a President who recognizes this and, for our common benefit, wants it to stop.

The definition of "politics" will, owing to Mr. Trump, have to be changed a bit.

Fifth Column
House rejects Trump impeachment resolution after Dem Rep. Al Green forces vote
TW, would it be impolite to point and laugh?
The House of Representatives overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to impeach President Trump after a liberal Texas congressman forced a vote on his effort.

Democratic Rep. Al Green, who has repeatedly called for the president's removal, introduced two articles of impeachment against Trump on Wednesday.

But lawmakers immediately voted to effectively kill his resolution, with 364 voting to table it and 58 Democrats voting to move ahead.

In a dramatic speech on the floor ahead of the vote, Green called Trump "unfit" for office and accused him of "high misdemeanors."

The symbolic vote had been expected to fail in the Republican-controlled House. It put some lawmakers in competitive districts in a tough spot by forcing them on the record about impeachment.

Lawmakers did not actually vote on the actual articles of impeachment, but on a procedural measure that would have led to a vote on them.

"As I have said before, this is not about Democrats, it is about democracy," Green wrote in a memo to his colleagues. "It is not about Republicans, it is about the fate of our Republic. May everyone vote their conscience knowing that history will judge us all."

Green has discussed his intention to impeach Trump since last spring. In October, Green filed impeachment articles that nearly forced a vote -- until House Democratic leaders persuaded him to abandon the effort.

At the time, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders called the effort "pathetic."
Not as pathetic as the Republican preparedness to actually repeal and replace 0bumhole-care, though.
In his memo to lawmakers, Green didn’t allege "obstruction of justice" or reference the ongoing investigation into the 2016 presidential campaign’s connection with Russia.

Instead, Green highlighted Trump’s supposed association with "White Nationalism, Neo-Nazism and Hate," as well as "Inciting Hatred and Hostility," as offenses worthy of impeachment.

"Friends, whether we like it or not, we now have a bigot in the White House who incites hatred and hostility," Green wrote in a letter.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has insisted that any impeachment effort should be put on hold until there is evidence of an impeachable offense.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Trump: America Recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's Capital
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that America formally recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital city, changing decades of U.S. policy in a brief afternoon speech and casting the move as a bid to preserve, not derail, aspirations for regional peace.

Appearing in the White House's Diplomatic Reception Room against an elaborate backdrop of Christmas decorations, He also said the United States embassy in Israel would, over time, be moved there from Tel Aviv.

Israel is the only country where the United States has an embassy in a city that the host nation does not consider its capital.

'I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,' Trump said. 'While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today I am delivering.'

'When I came into office I promised to look at the world's challenges with open eyes and very fresh thinking,' he said, leaning heavily on a mid-1990s federal law that demanded the embassy's relocation.

'We have declined to acknowledge any Israeli capital – at all,' Trump added. 'But today we finally acknowledge the obvious, that Jerusalem is Israel's capital. This is nothing more or less than a recognition of reality.'

'It is also the right thing to do. It is something that has to be done.'

'This decision is not intended in any way to reflect a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace agreement,' the president insisted. 'We want an agreement that is a great deal for the Israelis and a great deal for the Palestinians.'

We are not taking a position of any final status issues, including the specific boundaries of the Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem or the resolution of contested borders,' he continued.

'Those questions are up to the parties involved. The United States remains deeply committed to helping facilitate a peace agreement that is acceptable to both sides. I intend to do everything in my power to help forge such an agreement.'

Trump said the United States will continue to support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian standoff, 'if agreed to by both sides.'

'In the meantime, I call on all parties to maintain the status quo at Jerusalem's holy sites,' he said.

'Jerusalem is today, and must remain, a place where Jews pray at the Western wall, where Christians walk the Stations of the Cross and where Muslims pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque,' Trump added.

America's friends and foes unleashed fierce criticism before Trump made official what the White House previewed for reporters Tuesday night.

But Trump stuck to his guns, calling his decision an act of political courage.

Another One! Mueller Deputy Was Personal Attorney of Ben Rhodes, Represented Clinton Foundation
On Fox News Tuesday night, Laura Ingraham reported that yet another one of Robert Mueller's deputies in his Russia investigation is compromised due to her track record as a blatant partisan.

Jeannie Rhee, who was hired by Mueller last summer to work on the probe, was the personal attorney of Ben Rhodes and also represented the Clinton Foundation, Ingraham revealed. "This information will put further pressure on Special Prosecutor Bob Mueller to resign."

Rhee is the third member of the Mueller team this week who has been shown to be brazenly partisan. Two other members of the team have been revealed as highly questionable hires in recent days as well ‐ Peter Strzok, an anti-Trumper who helped exonerate Hillary Clinton, and Andrew Weissmann, an unscrupulous prosecutor who told outgoing acting Attorney General Sally Yates in an email that he was "proud" of her for defying President Trump's travel ban.

As bad as Strzok and Weissman are, Jeannie Rhee takes the cake.
She formerly worked in the Obama Justice Department as a deputy assistant attorney general in the Office of Legal Counsel, according to Fox News. Rhee was also the personal attorney for Ben "echo chamber" Rhodes, and the deputy national security adviser for President Barack Obama.

This could be a significant development because according to a report by Adam Kredo in the Washington Free Beacon last February, deep-state loyalists led by Rhodes had been working diligently behind the scenes to undermine the Trump White House and orchestrate the ouster of Michael Flynn, a strong opponent of the Iran nuclear deal.

Rhee was almost certainly part of that effort

John Conyers Retires, son appointed successor (balance of subject line redacted)
[Daily Caller] John Conyers III., the son and appointed successor of John Conyers’ Jr., the disgraced Democratic politician who announced his resignation on Tuesday, is a former attempted rapper who bragged that his friends are drug dealers and his dad "is a f***ing player."

The son’s brief rap career included lyrical gems such as "My n***as turn grams into grands" and "Ay f**k making a living bro, I’m trying to make history/So picture me letting the news nit-pick at me."

The aspiring artist also rapped about some of the challenges he’s had to live through, such as when his mother, former Detroit councilwoman Monica Conyers, was sentenced to three years in jail for taking bribes, or when Conyers Jr. had to repay the U.S. Treasury for Conyers III’s misuse of a taxpayer-funded Cadillac Escalade.

Iran's supreme leader: Trump's Jerusalem plan a sign of incompetence, failure
[The Hill] Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Wednesday referred to President Trump's plans to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as a sign of "incompetence and failure."

"That they claim they want to announce Jerusalem as the capital of occupied Palestine is because of their incompetence and failure," Khamenei told various Iranian officials according to his official website in comments reported by Reuters.

"The issue of Palestine today is at the top of the political issues for Muslims and everyone is obligated to work and struggle for the freedom and salvation of the people of Palestine," he continued.

Iran has long supported its Shia Muslim allies in the Palestinian territories.

Economy
Rural poverty skyrockets as jobs move away
[The Hill] The number of rural Americans living in poverty has skyrocketed in recent years amidst an economic evolution that has cost hundreds of thousands of manufacturing and mining jobs.

Poverty rates have also increased in the nation’s urban cores, which have generally recovered more quickly from the worst recession in modern history.

The difference is that the increase in poverty in urban counties happened almost entirely during and after the recession. The increase in poverty in rural counties began around the turn of the century, and has been exacerbated by the recession.

After a decade of growth during the 1990s, the data show rural America has been effectively experiencing its own recession for far longer than the nation as a whole.

"There were fairly sharp declines in the number of places characterized by high poverty rates in the 1990s," said Brian Thiede, a demographer at Penn State and the co-author of a new report on rural poverty released by the Carsey School of Public Policy at the University of New Hampshire. "This is a pretty stark reversal from what was happening in the 1990s."

At the turn of the century, about 1 in 5 rural counties had a poverty rate higher than 20 percent. Today, about one in three rural counties ‐ 657 counties ‐ have similarly high rates of poverty, the study found.

Mueller Deputy in Russia Probe Praised Sally Yates After She Defied Trump's Travel Ban: ‘I Am So Proud'
[Free Beacon] A top federal prosecutor who is now a deputy in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation praised then-acting Attorney General Sally Yates after she was fired in January by President Donald Trump for refusing to defend his travel ban.

In a Jan. 30 email obtained by Judicial Watch through a federal lawsuit, prosecutor Andrew Weissmann wrote to Yates under the subject line, "I am so proud," Fox News reported.

"And in awe. Thank you so much. All my deepest respects," the content of the email read, referring to Yates' refusal to defend the first version of Trump's travel ban on seven majority-Muslim countries.

The email was sent from Weissmann’s government account before he was assigned to Mueller’s Russia probe and was still working in the DOJ’s criminal division.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said the new Weissmann email is an "astonishing and disturbing find."

The email's release comes after it was recently confirmed another Mueller investigator, FBI official Peter Strzok, was removed from the investigation over the summer after sending anti-Trump texts to an FBI lawyer he was romantically involved with.

The allegations against Strzok brought up old concerns about the objectivity of the FBI, especially in the probes of Hillary Clinton’s emails and Russian election meddling.

"Andrew Weisman (sic), a key prosecutor on Robert Mueller’s team, praised Obama DOJ holdover Sally Yates after she lawlessly thwarted President Trump," Fitton said in a statement. "How much more evidence do we need that the Mueller operation has been irredeemably compromised by anti-Trump partisans?"

FBI Increasingly Politiiczed under Comey and Mueller
[Free Beacon] The Federal Bureau of Investigation, once America's storied crime fighting agency, is under fire for an increasing leftward politicization blamed on recent liberal directors and a bureaucracy operating with nearly unchecked power.

Once a bastion of conservative anti-communism under long-time director J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI has become one of the more liberal political agencies of government, and some critics say appears increasingly to operate outside normal constitutional controls.

The shift is the result of a bureaucratic culture that emerged in the 1990s and was fueled by its two most recent former directors, James Comey and Robert Mueller, who ran the agency for the past 16 years. Mueller headed the FBI from 2001 to 2013, when Comey took over and served until he was fired by Trump in May.

Both former directors currently are at the center of a fierce political debate over the FBI's competency and integrity.

China-Japan-Koreas
China did something it's never done before to warn the US about fighting North Korea
[Bus Insider] As the US and South Korean militaries worked together on the largest-ever version of their annual air-power exercise on the Korean Peninsula, China did something that suggests it would consider backing up North Korea in the event of war.

On Monday, the same day the exercise started, a spokesman for China's air force said it had staged exercises along "routes and areas it has never flown before" with surveillance aircraft over the Yellow and East seas near the Korean Peninsula, according to the South China Morning Post.

While China needs to exercise its constantly expanding and modernizing military, this exercise most likely had another purpose.

"The timing of this high-profile announcement by the PLA is also a warning to Washington and Seoul not to provoke Pyongyang any further," Li Jie, a military expert based in Beijing, told the Post, using the abbreviation for the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

With a record 24 US stealth aircraft in South Korea for the Vigilant Ace exercises, China's move sends a clear message.

#9  The West has pulled the wool over its own eyes for many decades now. But the unchanging truth is that China has always stood in North Korea's corner. Over the ages, Korea's standing in Chinese eyes has varied between tributary state and province. No amount of wishful thinking will change that. The real long term question is whether we're willing to fight China to keep Korea (either one) independent. Because IMO, China's long term goal is the enlargement of the Yanbian prefecture to include all of the Korean peninsula, at which point it might become a full-fledged province.

#12  China needs to grow the hell up and realize that nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them in the hands of that nutjob in North Korea is a clear and present danger to the very existence of the US, and will have to be either be removed by sanctions - or by force.

China's playing politics with this is bullshit, and it will lead to a nuclear war - or at least as severe a military strike as we can put together. Either that, or we arm the South Koreans and Japanese with nukes of their own.

Wake up and stop playing games China - you can topple the regime peacefully if you enforce sanctions that have already been called for.

If you do not, then we will be forced to act. And China will pay huge consequences if we do.

Milo Yiannopoulos Parliament speech
h/t Gates of Vienna
[DailyMail] Right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has launched a scathing attack on modern feminism during his speech at Parliament House.

The controversial figure labelled the movement 'vindictive' and 'man-hating' as he addressed MPs and journalists in the Mural Hall in Canberra on Tuesday.

'Feminists like to say that feminism is about equality for women - about giving women equal standing with men. They have it,' Yiannopoulos said.

'What feminism has become - since it has run out of things to complain about - is a mean, vindictive, sociopathic, man-hating movement.

'You'd be hard pressed to find a journalist who doesn't describe themselves as a feminist these days. But it's very difficult to find a normal woman who does.'

Dershowitz: When Politics Is Criminalized
[NYT] We are surrounded on all sides by news of criminal investigations into politicians. Robert Mueller, the special counsel, has obtained an indictment relating to his investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. Congressional committees are also investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election. House Republicans have announced plans to look into the Obama administration’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s emails and its decision to give a Russian-controlled company, Uranium One, control of some American uranium reserves. Now the Justice Department is considering whether to appoint a special counsel in the uranium deal.

Government corruption should be prosecuted, Congress has a role to play in overseeing the executive branch, and our intelligence agencies are right to raise concerns about foreign interference in our elections. But there is something worrisome about the current frenzy of criminal investigations. To me they point to a frightening trend that afflicts both Democrats and Republicans: the criminalization of political differences.

The framers of our Constitution did not seek to make it easy to convict Americans of crimes. They bestowed upon criminal defendants a bundle of rights to provide safeguards against overzealous prosecutors or legislators, including prohibitions against compelled self-incrimination, unreasonable searches, double jeopardy and the passage of laws declaring people guilty of acts that were not criminal when committed.

U.S. to secure USD1.115 bn for Iraq reconstruction, explosives removal
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The United States is working on securing more than USD1.115 billion for Iraq for reconstruction and explosives removal efforts, its ambassador in Baghdad was quoted saying on Tuesday.

NRTTV quoted ambassador Douglas Silliman saying in a presser that the United States would secure USD115 million for reconstruction, as well as nearly USD1.7 billion for the removal of explosives left over by the war against Islamic State

since 2014.

According to Silliman, work will be done for the repatriation of nearly three million refugees in Iraq.

Silliman also denied recent reports of a surge in international coalition troops in Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
explaining that recent military movements were merely for the transportation of military equipment.

Landmines and booby-traps left over by Islamic State snuffies across several Iraqi cities have killed and maimed many as Iraqi troops gradually took over areas occupied by the snuffies since the launch of a major, U.S.-backed security offensive in 2016.

House Settled Lawsuit After Meeks Fired Staffer Who Reported Sexual Assault Related To Donor
[DAILYCALLER] The Office of House Employment Counsel brokered a settlement in 2006 over allegations that Rep. Gregory Meeks

fired a staffer in retaliation for reporting that she was sexually assaulted at a business tied to a campaign contributor, The Daily Caller News Foundation has learned.

Andrea Payne, then a congressional aide in the New York Democrat’s Queens office, filed a complaint with the Office of Compliance, and Meeks fired her weeks later. He admitted that Payne’s termination did not have to do with the quality of her work, according to her lawsuit.

"This is an action to recover for damages sustained by plaintiff when Representative Meeks violated her Constitutional rights by retaliating against her, and ultimately terminating her employment, because of her sexual assault lawsuit," Payne’s attorneys wrote.

Saudi ministers hope uprising in Sanaa will help rid Yemen of Houthi militias

bin Abdulaziz chaired a meeting held by the kingdom’s council of ministers on Tuesday where the monarch briefed them on the results of his talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May last week.

Saudi Minister of Culture and Information Dr. Awad bin Saleh al-Awad said in a statement that the cabinet discussed a number of reports on developments in the region and the world.

The ministers welcomed a joint statement issued by the international meeting on the Yemeni crisis in London. The statement affirmed the full support of Saudi Arabia in its legitimate right to defend itself against threats to its security and stability. The statement also stressed that the firing of ballistic missiles by the Houthis toward the Kingdom constitutes a threat to regional security and prolongs the conflict.

The council pointed out the developments in the Yemeni capital Sanaa and noted the statement made by the leadership of the coalition supporting the legitimacy in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
in this regard.

Awad expressed the hope that "the uprising of the Yemeni people against the Houthi-backed sectarian militias supported by Iran will rid Yemen of the abuse, death threats, and the appropriation of public and private properties".

"Saudi Arabia reiterates its constant concern for the stability of Yemen and its return to its Arab embrace and for all that is in the interest of its people and the preservation of its land, security, identity, unity and social fabric within the framework of Arab, regional and international security," he added.

Security forces have cordoned the area where they located the IED, which was placed inside a barrel loaded with a highly explosive TNT charge planted on the coastal al-Arish and Kantara road.

"Police forces are currently combing the area after safely detonating the IED," the statement said.

Iran raps Arab states' shameless acknowledgement of Israel ties
[PRESSTV] Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has blasted certain regional and Moslem countries for setting aside their shame and disclosing their relations with the occupying regime of Israel.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 31 International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran on Tuesday, Rouhani said some regional states and Moslem countries shamelessly confirm their close ties with Israel, describing it as a "bitter" development facing the Islamic world today.

"In the past, if some countries covertly held talks and cooperated with the enemies of the region, they would deny it," Rouhani said. "Such relations were so ominous and detestable that no head of state could count Israel as a friend and the resistance [front] as an enemy to the region."

"Donald Trump ... is behaving increasingly irrationally and seems determined to provoke worldwide Moslem opinion and the reason is not difficult to see because inside America by every measure his popularity is decreasing," Mick Napier, an activist with the Scottish Paleostine Solidarity Campaign, told Press TV on Tuesday.

Trump’s potential declaration of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s "capital" has drawn opposition from various countries and international bodies, including The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Islamist Chief Says 'Security Eased' in Ain Hilweh By Departure of Extremists
[AnNahar] In light of reports that two prominent suspects taking refuge in the Paleostinian refugee camp of Ein el-Hellhole in Sidon have left the camp and headed to Syria, Jihadi Islamist Movement's chief Sheikh Jamal Khattab affirmed the reports on Tuesday saying "it eases the security burden in the camp."
Jihadis are still heading to Syria? Why?
In remarks he made to al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
daily, Khattab said he obtained information confirming that the suspects identified as Haitham al-Shaabi, Paleostinian, and Mohammed al-Arafi, Lebanese, have "likely" fled to Syria.

There is no definite information on whether other gunnies have followed the same steps he said in reference to the Lion of Islam group of Bilal Badr.

Khattab pointed out saying that some people view the departure of gunnies as positive while others see it the contrary, "but in overall it reduces the security burden on the camp."

Ein el-Hellhole, the largest Paleostinian refugee camp in the country, is home to about 50,000 refugees and is known to harbor gunnies and runaways.

By long-standing convention, the Lebanese army does not enter the country's 12 refugee camps, leaving security inside to the Paleostinians themselves.

Islamist suicide plot to assassinate Prime Minister Theresa May foiled
Nigel? Clive? Seamus?
[SkyNews] A terror plot to assassinate Prime Minister Theresa May has been foiled, Sky sources have confirmed.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said: "It's the latest in a number of terror plots that police and MI5 believe they've foiled this year.

"I understand that the head of MI5, Andrew Parker, briefed Cabinet ministers today, such is the seriousness of what they believed they have uncovered.

"It is in essence an extreme Islamist suicide plot against Downing Street. Essentially police believe that the plan was to launch some sort of improvised explosive device at Downing Street and in the ensuing chaos attack and kill Theresa May, the Prime Minister."

"This is something which has been pursued over several weeks at least by Scotland Yard, MI5 and West Midlands Police. It came to a head last week with the arrest of two men, by armed police, who earlier today were charged with preparing acts of terrorism."

Naa'imur Zakariyah Rahman, 20, from north London and Mohammed Aqib Imran, 21, from south-east Birmingham are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday morning.

Turkey Opens 'Terror' Trial of Academics over Peace Petition
[AnNahar] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on Tuesday began the hugely controversial trial of a group of academics charged with terror offences for signing a petition calling for peace in the Kurdish-dominated southeast.

Over 1,120 Ottoman Turkish and also foreign academics signed the petition which emerged in January 2016 calling for an end to the military's crackdown on outlawed Kurdish rebels in the southeast that had begun six months earlier.

The academics say the petition was an apolitical call for peace but prosecutors charged 146 of the signatories with making propaganda for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The first 10 -- from Istanbul University and Galatasaray University -- went on trial in Istanbul on Tuesday with the hearing attended by EU diplomats including the French ambassador.

Each suspect had a 10-minute hearing at the start of a marathon process expected to continue until at least April. The prosecution has chosen not to stage a mass trial involving all the suspects in the same case.

In the first hearings, the defence argued that the petition was "within boundaries of freedom of expression" and demanded their immediate acquittal, an AFP journalist in the court said.

Their next hearings will take place on April 12. Ten more academics will appear in court on Thursday with further sessions scheduled throughout December and January.

Outside the court, students gathered in support of their lecturers, brandishing banners with slogans, including: "Don't touch my professor!"

If convicted, the suspects face up to seven-and-a-half years in jail. None of those who went on trial on Tuesday is currently being held behind bars.

Philippine president declares Maoist rebel NPA a terrorist group
[ARABNEWS] The Philippine military can now address the communist threat in the country without hesitation after President Rodrigo R. Duterte designated the Maoist New People's Army (NPA) a terror organization.

"This will certainly ensure that the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) can now fully execute and perform its mandate without reservation and restrictions," Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla, the AFP front man, said.

On Tuesday, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque announced that Duterte had signed a proclamation "declaring the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) as a designated identified terrorist organization under Republic Act 10168 (RA 10168), otherwise known as "The Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act of 2012."

Duterte's official residence Malacañang, however, notes that declaring the CPP-NPA a designated/identified terrorist organization is nothing new. On Aug. 2, 2002, the US designated the CPP-NPA as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) and to date continues to include the local communist movement in its list of FTOs.

In his proclamation, the president directed the Department of Foreign Affairs to publish the designation of the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization.

The Department of Justice was likewise ordered to immediately file the necessary application for the proscription or declaration of the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization with the appropriate regional trial court.

After the Palace announcement, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana welcomed Duterte's proclamation.

"We have long since maintained that the CPP-NPA is a blight to the Filipino people, with its members engaging in constant criminal activities and wanton acts of terror," he said, adding that the government has walked the extra mile to accommodate them by resuming the talks. The communists, however, have imposed unreasonable conditions and continued their criminal acts.

Economist Larry Summers predicts 10,000 will die per year due to tax reform
[CNBC] - Some 10,000 Americans a year will die if the Republican tax reform bill is passed as written, economist Larry Summers said.

- Summers, a top official in both the Clinton and Obama administrations, said the cause will be a repeal of the Obamacare individual mandate, which requires Americans not covered by their employers to purchase health care.

- He debated the issue briefly on CNBC with Ken Langone, the NYC Langone Medical Center benefactor, who called the claims "emotional."

Khawaja Asif hints at foreign policy shift from US towards China, Russia
[DAWN] Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif on Tuesday said Pakistain's foreign policy has for long remained US-centric, however, the time had come to review the policy and shift its focus towards Russia and China.

The foreign minister highlighted the possibility of a policy shift and said revisiting the Islamabad's policy was the need of the hour. The minister hinted at an inclination towards the left block of the world, saying "China lives next to us and we have a common wall. Russia can also be our good friend."

Asif said this while addressing a seminar hosted by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in the federal capital.

"We can’t have an independent foreign policy until we are economically strong," the minister maintained.

Asif said the US has been Pakistain's biggest trade partner. "We have to convert our diplomatic outpost to trade outpost," he said, adding that Islamabad must improve and correct its relationships.

Egypt Police Arrest Fugitive Ex-Interior Minister Adly
[AnNahar] Egyptian police on Tuesday incarcerated

former interior minister Habib al-Adly who had been on the run to avoid serving a prison sentence for embezzlement, his lawyer told AFP.

Adly, whose iron-fisted command of the country's police helped fuel a 2011 uprising that unseated longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
, was arrested in Cairo, lawyer Essam al-Batawy said.

State television also reported Adly's arrest.

He was sentenced in April to seven years in prison along with 10 other former officials for embezzling about $122 million.

He had been a runaway since then. He had contested his sentence which an appeals court will examine in January.

Adly had previously been acquitted of charges of responsibility for the deaths of protesters during the anti-Mubarak uprising.

The court dropped charges against Mubarak, who has since been freed, in the same trial.

Under Adly, the interior ministry was accused of practising systematic torture and the repression of dissent.

on Tuesday to discuss the latest regional developments.

During the conversation, King Salman, affirmed Saudi Arabia's continued support for the historic rights of the Paleostinian people.

The King further assured Trump that any declaration on Jerusalem before a settlement would harm the ongoing Paleostinian-Israeli peace negotiations.

He added that an embassy move to Jerusalem is a dangerous step that would negatively affect and offend Moslems around the world.

The telephone conversation followed a call from Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Washington on Monday who said that any announcement on Jerusalem's status before a final settlement of the conflict may increase tension in the region.

"Any American announcement on the status of Jerusalem before a final settlement is reached will harm the grinding of the peace processor and increase tension in the region," Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, said in a statement.

"The Kingdom's policy has been and continues to be supportive of the Paleostinian people, and this has been transferred to the US administration," said Prince Khalid.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the Paleostinian Presidency thank the Kingdom for its stand and said that this clearly shows the support of Saudi Arabia to the Paleostinian people and their rights.

Israel braces for violent protests over Trump Jerusalem announcement
[IsraelTimes] Bethlehem protesters burn pictures of Trump; Israel says troops are preparing for a planned 'day of rage' in the wake of Washington's expected recognition of capital

Paleostinians burned pictures of US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Tuesday night, as anger ramped up over an expected announcement by Trump Wednesday of US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Israeli troops girded for the possibility of violence.
Why is this day no different than any other day?
The picture-burning protest came hours after Trump told the leaders of the Paleostinian Authority and Jordan in phone calls that he intends to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, despite intense Arab and Moslem opposition to a move that would alter decades of US policy and risk potentially violent protests.

Trump is to publicly address the question of Jerusalem on Wednesday and US officials familiar with his planning said he would declare Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, though he would not order the embassy move immediately.

Paleostinian factions have called for protests against the moves, which would de facto recognize Israeli illusory sovereignty over the city despite Paleostinian claims to part of it.

Israeli security services were preparing for the possibility of violence in the West Bank in light of Paleostinian terrorist groups calling for demonstrations in response to US Trump’s expected moves, sources said.

In a statement earlier Tuesday, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, called for Paleostinians to "make Friday a day of rage against the occupation, rejecting moving the American embassy to Jerusalem and declaring it the capital of the Zionist entity."

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh
...became Prime Minister after the legislative elections of 2006 which Hamas won. President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Haniyeh from office on 14 June 2007 at the height of the Fatah-Hamas festivities, but Haniyeh did not acknowledge the decree and continues as the PM of Gazoo while Abbas maintains a separate PM in the West Bank...
warned that a US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and recognize the city as Israel’s capital would be a "dangerous escalation" that crosses "every red line."

... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
’s Fatah movement also called for daily protest marches this week, starting Wednesday, and Fatah’s youth wing said "all options [are] open for defending Jerusalem."

The US State Department on Tuesday ordered babus government employees to avoid Jerusalem’s Old City and the West Bank until further notice in anticipation of an outbreak of Paleostinian violence over Trump’s upcoming announcements on Jerusalem.

Killing of teenaged driver
[DAWN] GIVEN our pervasive gun culture, it is no surprise that society has suffered fatalities, trauma and injuries caused by shootings including everyday firearm-related violence. This unchecked gun culture is the reason behind the fatal shooting of a teenaged driver on Sunday morning in the aftermath of a hit-and-run accident near Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
’s Clifton beach.

According to reports, when an 18-year-old student driving a Mercedes hit a motorcyclist and failed to stop, he was chased by gunnies in an SUV. Although the biker survived, his friends fired several rounds of bullets killing the young driver on the spot and injuring another passenger.

Though there is no justification for not stopping after hitting a vehicle, it is the fear of frenzied mobs known to assault those behind the wheel, whether or not they are at fault, that keeps many drivers from halting.

In this incident, while the police have apprehended the culprits who have confessed to their crime, the question of gun-control measures, and the non-implementation of stringent controls for the use, licensing, display and possession of guns has come to the fore.

This utterly senseless shooting and incidents of similar gun violence (the Shahzeb Khan murder in 2012), where perpetrators are young men easily provoked into violence, raises several points.

First, in certain incidents lax parental control is partly to blame when young people have access to guns ‐ especially disturbing is when adults protect young perpetrators of violent acts.

Secondly, with an ill-equipped and overstretched security apparatus, the government is clearly hesitant to implement existing rules curbing unnecessary gun use. Consider here the thuggish, private armed ’militias’ accompanying politicians, state ministers, feudal families and such, displaying their weapons and harassing ordinary citizens.

Arabia
Iranian politician: There’s no ISIS in Yemen, so why should we intervene?
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Mostafa Tajzadeh, a veteran Iranian politician, has attacked the Revolutionary Guard for its intervention in Yemen, saying that there was "nothing to make of Yemeni territory that have any strategic importance for Iran".

"Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
is not occupied by ISIS and it has no holy places, it is not a neighbor of Israel to be considered, by the Iranian regime leaders, with a strategic importance for the Islamic Theocratic Republic," Tajzadeh tweeted on Monday.

Tajzadeh refers to the efforts of the Iranian regime to intervene in the internal affairs of Arab countries, where Iran intervenes militarily in Syria and Iraq. Their presence in one is focused on fighting ISIS while in the second to defend Shiite shrines in both countries, where it calls its militias in Syria and Iraq "Defenders of al-Haram."

Iran is also intervening in Leb’s affairs by supporting the terror group Hezbollah militias, arguing that this country is the first front against Israel.

On Nov. 23, Revolutionary Guards Commander Mohammad Ali Jafari announced what he called an "advisory support" council of his "forces to Yemen", which meant the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militias were being supported politically, financially and militarily by Tehran.

Tajzadeh is an Iranian reformist politician who was deputy for the interior minister in political and security affairs under the former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami.

UN spokeswoman Alessandra Vellucci said the eighth round of peace talks under special envoy Staffan de Mistura was set to restart Tuesday after a weekend break.

She said: "The delegation of the government has been invited back in Geneva as of today."

Syria’s ambassador to Geneva, Hussam Edin Aala, told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that Damascus was "studying" the invitation.

The head of Syria’s regime delegation has blasted the opposition for a communique in which it stated its ultimate goal was to remove Assad from power. Bashar Jaafari said on Friday his team was leaving Geneva for the weekend and that Syria would decide whether it would return to the talks.

Jaafari warned then that there could be no progress in the talks as long as the opposition insisted on what he described as a "provocative and irresponsible" position.

Syrian state media and an opposition monitoring group said an kaboom has destroyed a van near the central city of Homs, killing at least eight people.

ISIS claimed Tuesday’s attack in Akarma, a regime stronghold south of Homs.

ISIS said it targeted a bus carrying Syrian soldiers, but the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said those killed were civilians, including six women.

Syrian state TV has aired images of the van’s charred body, as well as damaged vehicles nearby. State news agency SANA says eight people were killed and 18 maimed.

Separately, Syria’s state news agency said Syrian air defense has shot down three Israeli missiles that were targeting a military post near Damascus.

SANA said the attack occurred early on Tuesday but has not said whether there were casualties.

Afghanistan
Senior al-Qaeda Member Killed In Joint Military Operation
[ToloNews] A senior member of al-Qaeda, Omar Khetab, and 80 other fighters of the Death Eater group were killed in joint operations carried out by Afghan and the Resolute Support forces in Ghazni, Paktia and Zabul provinces, the National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) said in a statement on Tuesday.

In addition, 27 other members of the group were incarcerated
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
in the military operations.

Khetab was the second big shot of al-Qaeda after Asim Omar, the leader of the group in Indian Peninsula, according to the statement.

"Qasim, Hassan Hamza, Jonaid and Mustafa, military head of al-Qaeda, three Punjabi Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
and two local Taliban fighters were among those killed in the military operations," the statement said. "These members of al-Qaeda were directly involved in fighting against the government and foreign troops."

"The members also had a role in advising in the use of heavy weapons like rockets, mortars and training for Taliban’s night attacks," the statement added.

The Resolute Support in a statement sent to TOLOnews on Tuesday confirmed the death of Omar Khetab, a senior al-Qaeda leader as well as other al-Qaeda gunnies in military operations carried out in Ghazni, Paktia and Zabul provinces.

According to the statement, Khetab was the second senior commander for al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent and was directly involved in fighting against Afghan and foreign forces.

"This operation is a testament to the real growth the Afghan forces have achieved over the past year," said General John Nicholson, US Forces-Afghanistan commander. "It is also another example of the lethality of the undefeated Afghan Special Forces and the success of working side by side with our Afghan partners."

According to Resolute Support, in a separate operation, the Taliban's "Red Unit" commander in Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province, Mullah Shah Wali, aka Haji Nasir, was killed in a kinetic strike in Musa Qalah, Helmand, Dec. 1. One of Wali's deputy commanders and three other gunnies were also killed in the strike.

Wali and his "Red Unit" are responsible for planning numerous suicide kabooms, IED attacks, and coordinated assaults against civilians, Afghan and coalition forces. Wali was directly responsible for coordinating operations and resupply of munitions, explosives, and materials for the Taliban throughout Helmand province.

"Mullah Shah Wali's death will disrupt the Taliban network, degrade their narcotics trafficking, and hinder their ability to conduct attacks against Afghan forces," Nicholson said. "USFOR-A and our Afghan partners will continue to aggressively target Taliban leaders to destroy their drug network, disrupt their communications, and deny them safe haven."

The Taliban in Helmand province are responsible for poppy cultivation and opium trade that funds their activities.

province of Afghanistan after the killing of the commander of the Red Unit of the group.

The provincial government media office in Helmand in a statement said at least nine Taliban Death Eaters including two senior local leaders of the group were killed during the separate operations in Musa Qala and Greshk districts.

The statement further added that five Taliban Death Eaters including the shadow district governor of the group Daud Ulfat were killed in an Arclight airstrike on Greshk-Musa Qala highway.

The Death Eaters were targeted as they were travelling on the highway, the provincial government added.

According to the local officials, in a separate airstrike in Bidka area of Musala Qala, at least four Taliban Death Eaters including a big shot of the group identified as Haqmal were killed.

The anti-government armed bad boy groups including the Taliban Death Eaters have not commented regarding the report so far.

White House: Mueller has not subpoenaed Trump's bank records
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday disputed reports that special counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed President Trump’s bank records.

"We confirmed that the news reports [that] the special counsel had subpoenaed financial records related to the president are completely false," Sanders said during the daily press briefing.

"No subpoena has been issued or received. We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources. I think this is another example of the media going too far and too fast and we don’t see it going in that direction," she said.

Citing an anonymous and unidentified official, Reuters reported earlier Tuesday that Mueller’s team had subpoenaed records from Deutsche Bank, where Trump is believed to have a line of credit and to have conducted tens of millions of dollars in transactions.

Erdogan: Jerusalem status a red line for Muslims
[Al Jazeera] Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
has threatened to cut diplomatic ties with Israel over reports that the United States plans to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Such a move would be a "red line" for Moslems, Erdogan said on Tuesday.

Reports emerged on Friday that US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
was considering recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a move that would be symbolised by relocating the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, upsetting decades of US policy.

The plan has drawn criticism from a number of world leaders, who fear it would further escalate regional tensions.

French President Emmanuel Macron told Trump by telephone that Jerusalem's status must be decided in peace talks between Israelis and Paleostinians.

The Arab League

was holding an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss developments on the status of Jerusalem, after a request by Paleostinian officials.

Israel hits back at Turkish leader over threat to sever ties

[IsraelTimes] Israeli officials blasted The Sick Man of Europe Turkey’s president, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First, on Tuesday for his threat to sever diplomatic ties should US President Donald Trump recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Diplomatic officials said in a statement that Jerusalem has been the "capital of the Jewish people for 3,000 years and Israel’s capital for 70 years, regardless of whether Erdogan recognizes this or not."

They spoke on condition of anonymity because the government has not yet commented formally.

Last year, Turkey and Israel ostensibly ended a longstanding rift greatly exacerbated by Israel’s storming of a Gazoo-bound ship attempting to beat the blockade of the coastal strip in 2010. That incident left dead 10 Ottoman Turkish activists who had attacked Israeli soldiers and led to a downgrading of diplomatic ties.

The two sides have since stepped up cooperation, in particular in energy, but Erdogan, who regards himself a champion of the Paleostinian cause, is still often bitterly critical of Israeli policy.

"The police instead of arresting the attacker shot up the attacker and killed him in the dormitory," she said while quoting the student as saying.

The politician said the student, who was under treatment, explained the incident when a group of holy warriors stormed the institute.

She said the police had spoiled evidence by killing the attacker and that the arrest of the terrorist would have provided intelligence agencies with clues to reach handlers, planners and criminal masterminds of the attack on the institute.

The attack had left nine people, including eight students, dead and 28 injured.

were safe despite his death at the hands of the krazed killers.

Thousands of Yemenis gathered near Sanaa International Airport shouting "Sanaa is free and the state still stands!" and "Yemenis are one!," as militia chiefs addressed the crowd, many of whom waved the national flag.

Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, who heads the terrorists’ revolutionary council, told the crowd the Houthis had been left with no choice but to "confront" their former ally but were now "ensuring the safety" of members of his General People’s Congress party.

"They are being treated in hospitals and no one is looking to eliminate them," Houthi said.

Tuesday’s rally struck a decidedly conciliatory tone after days of intense festivities between the Houthis and Saleh supporters left residents fearing their neighborhoods had become a new front in the Yemen

war.

Sanaa was quiet on Tuesday after five days of fighting, and UN and Red Thingy flights have landed at the airport, the UN said on Tuesday.

Street battles in the capital had stopped despite 25 Arclight airstrikes overnight, UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen Jamie McGoldrick said.

The funeral of Saleh was expected later on Tuesday.

His family’s allies have battled the Houthis since last week, a dramatic turn in a conflict that had been largely stalemated for much of the past three years.

The UN says a food shortage caused by warring parties blocking supplies has created the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Millions of people could die in one of the worst famines of modern times.

"People are now emerging from their houses after five days being locked down basically as prisoners," McGoldrick told a regular UN briefing, speaking by phone from Sanaa.

"They are now seeking safety, moving their families in case things erupt again and at the same time seeking medical treatment and trying to pacify very terrified kids who have endured five days of relentless shelling, shooting and ground fire and airstrikes."

The airstrikes overnight struck government buildings, palaces and bridges, and people were now bracing themselves in case of more fighting or airstrikes, McGoldrick said, describing the situation as "very uncertain times."

McGoldrick had no details of Saleh’s funeral later on Tuesday and did not know if it would coincide or clash with an event planned by the Houthis to celebrate his killing. He said there had been a report that there would be a ceremony around the main mosque, and the UN mission should avoid the area because of traffic.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) said that as many as 234 people have been killed in Sanaa street fighting this month between the Houthis and Saleh supporters.

The ICRC said on Tuesday that another 400 people have been maimed in the festivities, which first erupted last week.

It’s not clear how many civilians are among the dead.

Not quite. US military systems are for the most part hardened now.

The civilian power grid, etc. are not, however, and an EMP attack in one place could cascade across a lot of systems, with (impossible to predict in detail due to the high number of variables) effects far from the attack.

WRT such effects, consider the impact on food supplies on the east coast if transportation, communications and the power/communications grids were fried in central California.

No - those would be the homeless guys near the Park Street T stop, near Boston Common. I'd rather talk to those guys than the professional protesters inhibiting traffic in front of the State House. Which I've done on occasion - give a guy $2 for a smoke, chat with him while I smoke it, then take off before he tries to hit me up for more cash.

... the blood of my father will be hell ringing in the ears of Iran," Ahmed Ali Saleh was quoted as saying by Saudi-owned al-Ekhbariya TV on Tuesday.

He called for his father's backers to "take back Yemen from the Iranian Houthi militias".

Saleh was killed in a rocket-propelled grenade and gun attack on his vehicle at a checkpoint outside Sanaa on Monday. The Houthis said that he was targeted for "treason" after he cut ties with the rebels just days earlier and indicated he was open to talks with the Saudi-led coalition, which has been leading the fight against the Houthis since 2015.

The threat came as news surfaced that Tareq Mohammed Abdullah Saleh, the former president's nephew, was also killed during festivities with the Houthi rebels

According to Rooters, a statement from Saleh's party on Tuesday confirmed that the senior military commander, whose fate had been unknown, was dead.

Tareq Mohammed Abdullah Saleh was expected to lead the military operations against the Houthis, analysts recently told Al Jazeera.

Tense calm
There was a tense calm in Sanaa early on Tuesday, after the Saudi-led coalition launched at least 25 overnight air strikes on the capital city.

"People are now emerging from their houses after five days being locked down basically as prisoners," Jamie McGoldrick, the UN's humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, said during a briefing by phone in Sanaa.

"They are now seeking safety, moving their families in case things erupt again and at the same time seeking medical treatment and trying to pacify very terrified kids who have endured five days of relentless shelling, shooting and ground fire and air strikes."

Hakim al-Masmari, editor of the Yemen Post newspaper, told Al Jazeera that at least nine non-combatants were killed and many more injured in the overnight strikes.

Taiz command and the General People’s Congress in the governorate called for revolting against Houthi militias stationed in the governorate’s surroundings. Deputy Governor of Taiz Aref Jamal said the next days will witness fierce operations against the Houthis, similar to what’s happening in Sanaa.

Meanwhile,

the Saudi-led coalition air force launched seven strikes against Houthi positions around the Republican Palace in central Sanaa.

Houthi militias have imposed a state of emergency ‐ though not officially declared ‐ in Sanaa and executed 200 members of the General People’s Congress forces.

They deployed their button men across Sanaa, set checkpoints, increased their security on their headquarters and stationed snipers on rooftops.

Sources told al-Arabiya and al-Hadath television channels that Houthi militias are raiding houses of General People’s Congress officials and arresting them in Sanaa, adding that they stormed Aref al-Zouka’s house and detained his family.

On Monday, the UN said heavy fighting around the diplomatic area in Sanaa was still on, adding that roads were closed and tanks were deployed in the streets.

The UN noted that there is also fighting in other governorates like Hajjah, adding that aid convoys to Sanaa and flights have been suspended.

Yemeni media sources said on Monday evening that festivities erupted between Saleh’s loyalists and Houthi militias in the Usaylan District in the Shabwah Governorate, east of the country. Local sources added that Saleh’s loyalists killed three Houthi Lions of Islam and injured others.

Tit for tat: Russia Registers 9 US Media Outlets as 'Foreign Agents'
[AnNahar] Russia's justice ministry on Tuesday named nine US media outlets including Voice of America as "foreign agents" after President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
signed a law last month allowing international media to be slapped with the controversial label.

The ministry on its website posted a statement saying that US-funded Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty and seven of their media affiliates have been recognised as "carrying out the functions of a foreign agent."

Russia last month hastily issued legislation allowing the measure to target media in a retaliatory move after Kremlin-funded RT television registered itself as a "foreign agent" in the United States under official pressure.

Radio Free Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
and Voice of America had already been formally warned by the justice ministry that they risked recognition as "foreign agents."

The justice ministry has now formalised this, naming them and their affiliates, including Radio Free Europe's news sites dedicated to regions including Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine, and the Caucasus and a television channel run jointly by Radio Free Europe and Voice of America called Telekanal Nastoyashchyeye Vremya.

The 2012 law previously applied only to non-governmental organizations that had international funding.

Those branded "foreign agents" have to present themselves as such on all paperwork and submit to intensive scrutiny of their staffing and financing.

Many NGOs have closed down as a result, saying the measure made it too difficult for them to operate.

Rights groups fear the measure applied to media could have a chilling effect on the ability of outlets to carry out independent reporting.

"If it is meant to be, it will be," Musharraf said during an appearance on Aaj News for an interview on Sunday.

"There have been no talks yet, but if they want to be included in the alliance, by all means, I will welcome them," Musharraf said, referring to his recently announced 23-party 'grand alliance'.

International powers, including the US and India, consider JuD to be a front for LeT, the hard boy group blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks that left 166 people dead.

But JuD denies any link to violence, and within Pakistain the organization enjoys a high degree of popularity for the work of its charitable arm, particularly after natural disasters.

13 killed in clashes between Colombian rebels
[PRESSTV] Thirteen people were killed in Colombia in a clash between National Liberation Army (ELN) rebels and FARC dissidents, the country's ombudsman said Tuesday.

The firefight, which comes as the ELN is observing a three-month ceasefire with the government in Bogota, happened last week in a remote area of the country's southwest, the official, Carlos Negret, told news hounds.

Negret said ELN guerrillas had gone to a municipality near the Ecuador border to disarm a local farmers' resistance group, made up of alleged FARC dissidents, when the fighting occurred "resulting in the killing of 13 citizens."

He said the confrontation "totally goes against" the ELN's ceasefire with the government.

The dead included a pregnant woman and a man with a mental disability, as well as dissident members of the FARC -- the rebel group that signed a November 2016 peace deal with the government.

Negret said the ELN had also kidnapped a member of the farmers' resistance group.

Iraq
Iraq accused of violating due process for Daesh suspects
[ARABNEWS] Iraqi federal and Kurdish regional judiciaries are violating the rights of ISIS suspects with flawed trials, arbitrary detentions under harsh conditions, and broad prosecutions, Human Rights Watch said on Tuesday.
We knew this was coming.
As the bad boy group’s self-proclaimed caliphate crumbles following defeats in Iraq and Syria, thousands suspected of joining it have been captured, detained, and put on trial.

At least 200 have been sentenced, Human Rights Watch said, and at least 92 executed.

Iraq’s government faces the task of exacting justice on ISIS members while preventing Dire Revenge attacks on people associated with the group which could only undermine efforts to create long-term stability.

The New York-based rights group said that an 80-page report it released early on Tuesday "finds serious legal shortcomings that undermine efforts to bring (ISIS) fighters, members, and affiliates to justice."

A front man for Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, which supervises the federal judiciary, declined to comment on the contents of the report ahead of its release.

Majority of those detained in Saudi corruption probe agree to settlement
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Soddy Arabia

The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
’s attorney general has released a statement on his committee’s finding regarding a recent probe into corruption in the kingdom.

The statement said 320 persons were summoned by the commission with the addition of others after first investigations began on Nov. 9 based on the information provided by the detainees.

The anti-corruption commission referred a number of the tossed in the slammer
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
to the kingdom’s public prosecutor’s office. The number of detainees to date stands at 159.

"Most of those who have been confronted with corruption charges against them by the committee have agreed to a settlement and the necessary procedures are being completed," the statement said.

"The Public Prosecution examined the files of those referred to it in accordance with the relevant legal procedures and decided to detain a limited number of them and released the rest," the attorney general’s statement added.

According to the statement, the total number of those who have been detained and whose accounts have been frozen stands at 376.
An Nahar adds:
Dozens of high-profile figures including princes, ministers and tycoons are being held in Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton hotel, now a makeshift luxury prison, in the biggest sweep of the kingdom's elite in its recent history.

The attorney general has previously said he estimates at least $100 billion has been lost in embezzlement or corruption over several decades.

His latest statement comes after Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, the former National Guard chief once seen as a contender to the throne, was released last week following a settlement reportedly exceeding $1 billion.

Some analysts saw Prince Miteb's removal as an attempt by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also Saudi defense minister, to consolidate his control over the security services.

In a recent interview to The New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

, Prince Mohammed described as "ludicrous" reports equating the crackdown to a power grab, saying that many of those detained at the opulent Ritz-Carlton had already pledged allegiance to him.

Saudi forces also grounded private jets at airports, possibly to prevent high-profile figures from leaving the country, an aviation source told AFP.
