France, Germany Admit to Second Thoughts about Sticking with ISS
Europe's two biggest backers of the International Space Station are suggesting it's possible Europe may end its space station role in 2020 despite the fact that its major partners -- the United States, Russia, Japan and Canada -- have all said they will continue using the orbital complex until at least 2024.
In separate statements Jan. 4 and Jan. 5, the heads of the French and German space agencies said a detailed study is under way to assess the future operating cost of the station, and whether the cost can be justified given the pressure on near-term budgets.
Pascale Ehrenfreund, chairman of the board of the German Aerospace Center, DLR, which is Germany's space agency, said DLR would make no promises until after a full review of ISS's value.
"In view of the high cost involved and the resulting implications on budgets of [European Space Agency] member states, we have to evaluate very carefully costs and benefits of a continued participation in the ISS," Ehrenfreund said in a Jan. 5 statement in response to SpaceNews inquiries. "It's only based on this evaluation that we will be able to take a definite position."
Germany has been Europe's ISS champion -- its biggest paymaster and most vocal booster -- for more than 20 years and at times has had to strong-arm France into boosting its support under threat of reduced German backing of Europe's Ariane rocket program, a French priority.
In December 2014 France agreed to return its space station support to its mid-1990s commitment levels as part of a broad agreement that included a large German role in the future Ariane 6 rocket.
Jean-Yves Le Gall, president of the French space agency, CNES, said Jan. 4 that France would not announce a position for or against post-2020 ISS support until it had worked out a common position with Germany.
Le Gall invoked the pressure on German public spending caused by the massive influx of refugees onto German territory in 2015, and said no common position would be clear until the eve of the next meeting of European Space Agency ministers, set for December in Lucerne, Switzerland.
ESA governments, led by France and Germany, regularly play a kind of liar's poker with each other, feigning budgetary strength or weakness to win overall ESA support for a given program, or to encourage other nations to increase their contributions with the implied threat of program cancellation.
Whether that is what is happening now is difficult to discern. At the last ESA ministerial meeting, in December 2014 in Luxembourg, Germany and other governments committed to a 10-year program of support for current and future launch vehicles valued at more than 8 billion euros ($8.8 billion).
The commitment makes it more difficult to engage in the space-station-versus-launch-vehicles negotiations.
Le Gall said further pressure on Europe's space station involvement beyond 2020 is the possibly short duration of a barter arrangement with NASA. Up to now, Europe has provided space station cargo supplies to offset its 8.3 percent share of the station's common operating costs, which without the barter would be due to NASA in cash.
ESA retired its Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo vehicle after five flights. NASA and ESA, after lengthy negotiations, agreed to extend the barter to include Europe's service module contribution to NASA's Orion crew exploration vehicle -- whose mission is not centered on the international space station but destinations beyond low Earth orbit.
Europe is now providing one service module copy, and a set of spare parts for a second flight.
ESA has already reduced its ISS operating costs -- not including the common operating charges -- by more than 30 percent in recent years, in part by outsourcing much of the work to Airbus Defence and Space and in part by consolidating ground operations.
If France and Germany are contemplating a dip in station commitment, Britain is moving in the other direction on the strength of the appeal of ESA astronaut Tim Peake, a British national who is now part of the space station crew. But Britain remains a minor contributor to ESA's overall space station budget.
France may regain its space station enthusiasm in November with the launch of Thomas Pesquet, a French national in the ESA astronaut scheduled for launch to the station then. French President Francois Hollande in December celebrated Pesquet's mission at a public ceremony.
ESA budgeted human spaceflight, which is mainly the space station, at 371 million euros in 2015, or 8.4 percent of its total budget.

India has awarded its largest-ever road transport project worth Rs 10,050 crore to build the Zoji La tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir to Mumbai-headquartered IRB Infrastructure. The company will build the 14.08-km tunnel - the longest in South-East Asia - in seven years.

As for using Social Security information to determine those mentally incompetent to manage their own affairs, ie. senile (and perhaps also mentally retarded or otherwise mentally handicapped), I recall how well Obamacare is at sharing information between government computers at the click of a mouse.

I see the SSA (Social Security) reporting all on their list receiving disability payments will be forwarded to the ATF for cross check against previous background checks OK'd for gun purchases.
The ATF (famous for the Fast and Furious program) will notify those now ineligible persons to turn in their weapons or else. Hilarity ensues.

[Wash Times] A record number of firearms background checks were conducted by the FBI in 2015 -- equating roughly to 44 checks every minute.
The FBI reported Monday that the agency conducted a total of 23,141,970 checks last year, eclipsing the previous record of nearly 21.1 million checks set in 2013. News of the record-setting year comes as President Obama is expected to announce executive orders expanding background check requirements.
The background checks are conducted through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System for gun purchases from federal firearms licensees and for permits to carry guns. While the checks serve as an indicator of gun sale trends in the U.S., each check does not always equate to a sale.
There are only three categories of ATF-4473 results: 1. Approved for Sale. 2. Delay of Sale (up to 8 days). 3. Denial of Sale.
Denials are somewhere in the 1 to 2 % bracket, and can be contested/appealed by the potential buyer to the Federal Gov't. I have a hunch the governmental office of appeals is very, very small and is not open on week ends.
Police on Tuesday arrested the father of Nahat Melhem, suspected of carrying out the terror attack on a Tel Aviv pub on Friday that killed three and wounded several more. Five others were arrested along with Mohammed Melhem on suspicion of acting as an accessory to murder. Probably, won't start executing them until he surrenders---a pity.

It's very odd. Ynet has an op-ed from a long-time friend of the family, who says the family are good Israeli citizens, and The Times of Israel reports a former employer says the shooter was practically a Boy Scout.

[Breitbart] BOONE, IOWA -- Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) says that he does support ethanol, but doesn't support the government subsidizing it.
Cruz kicked off his six-day bus tour across Iowa and received questions at his first event about his opposition to the the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), an ethanol subsidy that many Iowan farmers depend on.
"I very strongly support corn and farmers and ethanol, but I don't think Washington should pick winners and losers" Cruz said after a supporter asked him to clarify his stance.
"I think what we need to do, instead of having a government mandated subsidy, we ought to do is remove the government barriers so that ethanol can end up having a larger share of the market through competition rather than through government putting mandates in place," Cruz added.
According to a report from Politico, supporters of the Renewable Fuel Standard are buying newspaper, radio and digital ads to attack Cruz on the issue in Iowa. Another group, Iowa Progress Project, has spent $200,000 airing anti-Cruz ads.
Cruz has overtaken Trump in the polls in Iowa, with 40 percent of likely Republican Iowa Caucus voters saying they plan on voting for Cruz.

A friend with a multi-fuel (switchable) car did a test from F-85 through to non-ethanol.
Results = mileage mapped the quantity of pure gasoline. The alcohol bought close to nothing in fuel value to the car. It may have been a fault of the car and yes the car was imported but not a VW. That said zero is zero.

[Inquirer] The New People's Army released from captivity on December 25 a member of a breakaway communist faction who had been held since December 10.
Freed was Cerilo Bagnoran, a member of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (RPA-ABB), who had been captured by the militants in La Castellana town during a raid on a farm owned by another RPA-ABB member identified as Rene Uropa. Uropa, who had also been a target for capture by the NPA, was able to escape.
RPA-ABB is composed of former NPA militants who broke off from the guerrilla movement over differences in strategies and ideology. RPA-ABB has since entered into a peace agreement with the Philippine government.
Bagnoran's comes after Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon and Bagnoran's family appealed to the NPA to free Bagnoran for Christmas. The plea was heeded as the militants freed him on Christmas Day.
In a statement, the NPA Leonardo Panaligan Command-Bagong Hukbong Bayan said Bagnoran was captured for trial by a revolutionary court for alleged involvement in the murder of two people whose families had sought NPA help. The statement said he was freed after being found not guilty. The statement was signed by rebel leaders Heneroso Siliang and Nadren Alberastin, presumably noms de guerre.

QUETTA: Suspected militants killed two policemen in Quetta's Sariab road area on Monday.
"Armed assailants opened fire at a police check post in Bibi Nanai area of Sariab road," said a police official.
One policeman was killed on the spot, and another succumbed to his wounds on the way to the hospital.
The bodies were shifted to Civil Hospital for a post mortem.
"The assailants escaped from the scene of the incident," added that police official.
Police officials and personnel from the Frontier Corps reached the site of the attack and began an investigation in to the incident.
No group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Police sources believe the incident was an act of targeted killing.
Balochistan has been experiencing incident violence and targeted killings since more than a decade. The largest province of the country by area, is home to a low-level insurgency by ethnic Baloch separatists.
Al Qaeda-linked militants also operate in the region.
[DAWN] A 25-hour gun and bomb siege near the Indian consulate in the Afghan city of Mazar-e-Sharif ended late Monday after all the attackers were killed, officials said.
"The clearance operation is over and all the gunnies have all been killed," said provincial police chief Sayed Kamal Sadat.
Government front man Shir Jan Durrani said three armed assailants had been killed after they mounted an attack on the diplomatic mission from a nearby building late Sunday.
"Our search operation is still going on inside the building," he said, adding that the fighting left one policeman dead and 11 others maimed.
No group has so far grabbed credit for the attack in northern Afghanistan, the latest in a series of assaults on Indian installations in the country.

After a heavy exchange of fire that went on until well into the night, security forces had suspended operations before resuming in the morning, firing rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns at the building.
Gunfire rang out as a helicopters circled overhead in a residential area of the city, in Balkh province, bordering Uzbekistan.
Gunfights and grenade kabooms echoed as commandos shimmied down a rope from a helicopter onto the roof of a nearby building from where assailants had launched the attack on the tightly-guarded compound.

[ARA] URFA – Clashes renewed in southeastern Turkey on Monday between army forces and Kurdish rebels of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The Turkish army confirmed in a statement the death of 10 PKK fighters and one of its own in fresh clashes in the provinces of Şırnak and Diyarbakir, southeastern Turkey.
In Diyarbakir, clashes broke out in the district of Sur, where the Kurdish PKK rebels killed at least one Turkish soldier.
In Şırnak, similar clashes took place in the towns of Cizre and Silopi. The Turkish army announced the death of ten PKK fighters there.
This comes as the PKK fighters try to break the army siege on the Kurdish towns in southeastern Turkey, which claimed lives of more than 20 civilians in the past two weeks, while tens of thousands others suffer a sharp shortage of food, water and electricity.
The Turkish army said that 195 PKK rebels were killed in the recent operations in Şırnak.
However, local sources argued that the Turkish operations aim at punishing the entire Kurdish population in the region for alleged cooperation with the PKK.
“The Turkish government tries to cover its crimes against humanity by announcing the death of so many PKK fighters,” a Kurdish media activist told ARA News in Cizre.
“People are suffering the most under the current siege and curfew. There are wounded civilians who need treatment and dead people who must be buried. The government avoids mentioning the humanitarian crisis in Cizre and Silopi to justify its military operations under the pretext of fighting the PKK,” he concluded.
[CSMONITOR] Denmark and Sweden tightened their borders on Monday in efforts to stem the flow of migrants entering Scandinavia from Germany.
Just hours after Swedish rules went into effect requiring train passengers traveling from Denmark to show ID, the Danish government announced it had beefed up border controls with Germany as of noon Monday (1100 GMT, 6 a.m. EST).
"We are introducing temporary border controls, but in a balanced way," Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen told news hounds in Copenhagen, adding there would be no problem for "ordinary" Danes and Germans to cross the border.
The moves were the latest by European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... countries to suspend an agreement to keep internal borders open after 1 million migrants entered the 28-nation bloc in 2015, most of them by crossing the Mediterranean to Greece or Italia.

[NBCNEWS] A Domino's Pizza delivery man stabbed a customer after arguing over a late order, according to police. Hmmm... That's unusual. I ordered from Domino's the other day and except for a few bruises everything was fine.
Michael Charles Parker, 31, of Glendora, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, was tossed in the slammer I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece! for allegedly stabbing the 20-year-old victim after what police described as "an altercation ... over the extended delay of a pizza delivery."
The victim received non-life-threatening injuries to his wrist and neck during the incident in Covina, California, at around 11:30 p.m. Saturday (2:30 a.m. ET Sunday). He was transported to a local trauma center, according to a statement from the Covina Police Department.
Officers contacted Parker at the pizza shop where he worked.
He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, booked, and released after he posted bail of $30,000. He is set to be arraigned on March 21.
Tim McIntyre, vice president of communication and public relations at Domino's, said in an email to NBC News that Parker was an employee of an independent franchise owner.

Jordan on Monday released a top leader of the Moslem Brüderbund opposition group after he served over two-thirds of his 18-month prison term for criticizing the United Arab Emirates, an ally of the kingdom.
Zaki Bani Irsheid's release comes at a time of growing divisions in the Jordanian branch of the pan-Arab Brotherhood, weakening its long-time role as the main political opposition.
In 2015, the Jordanian branch split, with a breakaway faction emphasizing its Jordanian identity and seeking government recognition. Bani Irsheid is the deputy leader of the original Brotherhood, which retains ties to the regional parent movement.
In another sign of internal turmoil, more than 300 activists, including senior members, resigned from the original Brotherhood branch in recent days, in part because of disputes over previous leadership elections, according to movement officials.
The regional movement also suffered setbacks, including government crackdowns, since initially emerging as the main beneficiary of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings.
Bani Irsheid was released early Monday, 13 months after his November 2014 arrest. He had been sentenced to 18 months after he criticized the UAE for labeling the Brotherhood a terrorist group.
Dozens of well-wishers greeted Bani Irsheid later Monday at a large tent set up outside his home on the outskirts of Amman, the Jordanian capital.
He struck a largely conciliatory tone, saying that "we forgive what happened in the past," an apparent reference to his arrest.
Bani Irsheid called for genuine political reforms, suggesting that the government has not kept its previous promises. "We have heard a lot of talk about reforms, but we don't see any results," he said.
Jordan's government front man, Mohammed Momani, said Bani Irsheid "served his time after being sentenced by the court."
Bani Irsheid did not win early release, said Momani. Under the Jordanian system, a year-long term means less than 12 months in prison, said Murad Adayleh, a Brotherhood front man.
The charges against Bani Irsheid came at a time of growing polarization in the region, with some Arab countries such as Egypt and the UAE adopting a harder stance against Islamist groups. The Moslem Brüderbund has been formally banned in Egypt and several Arab Gulf countries.

A 15-year-old girl was lightly maimed by shrapnel after an assailant tried to stab a police officer in Jerusalem and was shot and nabbed Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please! after a short chase. No stabbing injuries occurred, and the girl was taken to hospital along with another individual who was treated for shock.
The stabbing attempt occurred at 4.42pm at the light rail station close to the National Police Headquarters. Jerusalem District Police Spokersperson Assi Aharoni said that police on security duty on Haim Barlev Street "spotted a minority youngster who aroused their suspicions. The police checked the suspect who drew out a knife, tried unsuccessfully to stab the officers and fled with the knife in his hand.
"The coppers started to chase after the suspect and shot towards his lower body, hitting him in the leg and neutralizing him," Aharoni continued.
The attacker is a 16-year-old from north Jerusalem. He was taken for interrogation following his arrest.
The incident occurred close to the National Police Headquarters in Jerusalem. The two maimed were given first aid at the scene and taken to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus.
PESHAWAR: A special unit of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police claimed to have foiled a terror plan in an intelligence-based operation in Bannu on Monday.
At least six suspected militants were arrested in the raid, security sources said.
Based on prior intelligence, special police unit Bannu raided an under-construction house in Pir Dil Khel Sorani area of Bannu where the armed militants were busy in terror-planning, said the sources.
During the raid, police arrested six alleged militants and recovered weapons from then. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the suspected militants under the anti-terrorism act.
The arrested militants were named as Shamsur Rehman, Abidullah, Anwar Kamal, Safdar Iqbal, Mansoor and Qudratullah.
Military operation Zarb-i-Azb was launched against terrorists by the Pakistan Army on June 15 following a brazen militant attack on Karachi's international airport and failure of peace talks between the government and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) negotiators.
Officials say nearly 3,000 militants have been killed since the launch of the latest offensive.

The statement added, “The forces from the western Baghdad operations managed to kill four terrorists, while wounded two others,” pointing out that, “The security forces also dismantled six improvised explosive devices and destructed two vehicles belonging to the enemy.”
“A force from the 45th brigade in coordination with the National Security Service were able to dismantle a surface-to-surface missile, as well as two bombs in al-Thabitiya area west of Baghdad,” the statement continued.

In more recent days, a relative of the victim claimed that the girl had attempted suicide because of the pressures that she had come under during the police investigation of her complaint. On the other hand, lawyers of the accused -- who include a man said to have held office in the PML-N youth wing -- have called for a fair trial. There have been some reports doing the rounds in the media that either do not tally with the facts confirmed by police or that are one-sided. Apparently, some of the stories in the media amount to an attempt at influencing the probe. We are, sadly, once more hearing painful remarks about how the powerful can -- and will -- escape the clutches of the law. One again we are witnessing society's tendency of subjecting a rape complainant to the cruellest of inquiries. These are genuine concerns and cry out for the imposition of the unwritten code dictated by a most basic principle: respect for human dignity.
This critique of the role of the media, of the influential politicians trying to absolve their party of blame, and of society in general has drawn the usual round of vows about the dire need for corrective measures. But the danger is that all these promises of restraint are going to lose out to a hard-to-suppress urge to protect, report and comment. There is as yet not sufficient evidence around to inspire hope that the demands for fairness by all parties will not go unheeded. There is surely a need for civil society to counter the urge to resort to the sensational through debate and popular censure. The government still has a bigger role. This is as good a time as any for the government to display its commitment to investigate without fear or favour.

[DAWN] An alliance of Kashmiri krazed killer groups on Monday claimed the deadly attack on the Indian Air Force's Pathankot airbase.
The United Jihad Council (UJC) said in a statement released that the attack was a message to India that Kashmiri fighters could strike at any sensitive installation across India.
"Pathankot air base attack has been carried out by the mujahideen associated with National Highway Squad," said Syed Sadaqat Hussain, a front man for UJC.
The UJC comprises over a dozen krazed killer groups fighting Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmire.
It is headed by Syed Salahuddin. This is the first report of the existence of the National Highway Squad.
"Pakistain has nothing to do with the attack but ironically the Indian government, media and their armed forces are suffering from Pakistain phobia," added the UJC front man.
The front man added that by hurling allegations at Pakistain, India could neither sabotage the struggle of Kashmiri people in the past nor can it do so now.
"It would be better for the Indian leadership to read the writing on the wall and let the Kashmiri people decide thier fate on their own free accord, without further waste of time," elaborated the statement from the UJC .
The attack on the Pathankot airbase started before dawn on Saturday and a gunbattle between the forces of Evil and Indian forces is continuing into the third day, with the facility still not declared secure.
At least seven Indian troops and five attackers have been killed in the three days.
Indian Air Force's Pathankot airbase is a mere 50 km from the Pakistain border, and is a major forward operational airbase of the IAF.

Based on a request from the company to change the master plans for construction on the site, the Pendik Municipality Directorate of Planning exempted the basement floor of the project, equal to 20,000 square meters of retail space, from property tax. The municipal council passed the motion in December 2015 with the support of AK Party members despite dissent from the opposition party members of the council.
Cumhuriyet also reported that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Green Areas and Facilities approved the change made by the Pendik Municipality. In addition, neither the company nor the Pendik Municipality submitted the plan to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Transportation, though the project will be very close to roads connecting traffic with the airport, the daily said.
Gur's name came up in a recorded phone conversation that was leaked to the Internet after a major graft scandal was revealed in December 2013 that implicated sons of three Turkish ministers, businessmen, the chief of the state bank and other people from the inner circles of the AK Party and then-Prime Minister and current President Erdogan, including his son, Bilal.
Erdogan and his son can allegedly be heard in a series of five wiretapped phone conversations discussing plans for how to hide huge sums of cash located in their house in the Üskudar district of Istanbul on a day when police raided a number of venues as part of the corruption investigation.

"I am very delighted today, as I am leaving the leadership of the Operation Lafiya Dole a happy man because we have successfully done what is best to the military and the country on the lam, as we have degraded the capacity of the hard boyz and Nigerians should appreciate hard work performed by the military and I am leaving the scene to a person who is already in the theater of war and is familiar with the terrain in the area of the operation," Mr. Abubakar said.
"I consider all of you as my heroes, as all of you have contributed to the feat we achieved in the war against insurgency within the theater. My redeployment to the Army headquarters is an indication of the confidence the military high command has in us and I urge you to extend the gesture to my successor."

The Turkish authorities have extended operations against suspected ISIL cells after a double suicide kaboom in Ankara last October that killed more than 100 people. The bombing was blamed on the Lion of Islam group.
Two suspected members of ISIL were detained on Wednesday on suspicion of having devised a plot to carry out suicide kabooms in the capital of Ankara on New Year's Eve. A Turkish court ruled on Saturday to arrest the men, who, the authorities said, entered Turkey from Syria.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Al-Qaeda Death Eaters have stoned a woman to death in a southeastern Yemeni city they control after accusing her of adultery and prostitution, several witnesses said on Monday.
The Death Eaters on Sunday "placed the woman in a hole in the middle of the courtyard of a military building and stoned her to death in the presence of dozens of residents" of Hadramawt picturesque provincial capital Mukalla, one witness said.
A local journalist at the scene confirmed the rare stoning, saying that the gunnies prevented photography of the execution.
"This was the first time we have seen such a thing," another witness said.
A copy of the purported verdict issued by the so-called Hadramawt court of Al-Qaeda's Ansar al-Sharia ...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet... in December said the married woman "confessed in front of the judges to committing adultery".
Al-Qaeda's Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Emir of hunters in the state, Mai-Gana Mai-Durma, made the appeal while addressing journalists in Maiduguri.
Mai-Durma said the call became imperative because the hunters were familiar with the terrain at the dreaded forest, the hideout and operational base of the terrorists.
He said: "We are appealing to the military authorities to allow us join the fight against Boko Haram at the Sambisa forest. We are ready to pursue the bully boyz because we know the terrain very well."
According to him, the military should align them with members of the vigilance group, popularly known as the Civilian JTF, for effective result.
"We will overrun Sambisa in partnership with members of the civilian JTF if given the opportunity. This will help to complement the effort of military in the anti terrorism operation," he said.
Lamenting that hunters from the 27 local government areas of the state had been rendered idle by the insurgency, he said: "Hunters from all the 27 Borno LGAs are all in Maiduguri with our leaders doing nothing at present because of Boko Haram.
"Rather than idling away, we will want to assist the military in crushing Boko Haram terrorists."
The head of the hunters in Borno State also appealed to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Garbai, to assist in forwarding their request to the military authorities for consideration.

A police official said the blast appeared to come from a vehicle bomb near a compound for contractors close to the airport. There were no immediate details of damage or casualties.
It is the second blast of the day to hit the Afghan capital.
Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber on foot struck a street leading to Kabul's international airport. The attacks have coincided with a new effort to restart peace talks with the Taliban after earlier meetings were broken off last July.
Afghanistan's interior ministry front man Najib Danish had said that the target was a foreign forces convoy passing through the area but a police front man said he was not aware of that.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

He said Taliban singled them out among other passengers and took them to some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

LAHORE: Officials arrested 42 suspected militants with alleged links to the militant Islamic State (IS) group.
"The arrests were the result of raids in four Punjab cities over the weekend," said Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah.
The minister said those arrested had been tasked with setting up sleeper cells for IS, and that those arrested include the purported IS Islamabad chief Amir Mansoor, his deputy Abdullah Mansoori and the group's chief for Sindh province, Umer Kathio.
The minister said the raids also yielded IS literature and weapons.
Sanaullah said the operation against alleged IS militants was launched after a raid last week in Daska district, when 13 other IS suspects were arrested.
The minister's statements come nearly a week after the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) claimed busting an IS terror cell in Sialkot. The CTD said it arrested eight suspects and seized weapons, explosives and laptops, as well as a large number of compact discs containing publicity material, during the raid. An 'IS recruiter' was also arrested in Karachi earlier this week.
In December 2015, four well-educated men held on terrorism charges were arrested in Karachi for their involvement in the Safoora attacks, while their wives and their accomplices were accused of brainwashing educated and rich women through sermons and videos about the militant Islamic State (IS) group and other terrorist outfits.
An investigation report into the Safoora attackers in August alleged that the suspects were affiliated with Al Qaeda and IS.

Kurdish opposition sources in Iran have revealed yesterday that the executions carried out by the Iranian regime against the Kurds and other components are increasing annually, indicating that during the past nine months, according to the Iranian calendar, executed more than 750 people, majority of whom are Kurdish.
These parties condemned the Iranian campaign against Saudi Arabia, and demanded the international community to end his silence regarding the crimes committed by the regime in Tehran against humanity, particularly the attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran the night before last.
Vice president of Iranian Kurdistan Freedom Party and commander of the military wing of the party, Hussein Yazdan Bina told Asharq Al-Awsat that Since Ayatollah Khomeini’s revolution and up until now, executions of Kurdish citizens in Iran did not stop. Kurds are the only ones who are currently being executed by the regime in Tehran because of their political opinions.
“In order to hide the facts from the international public opinion, the Iranian regime fabricated the charge of narcotics trafficking. In reality, trafficking is being carried out by Iranian authorities and by officials of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian Intelligence in a project to suppress the Kurdish people in Iran. Iran has deluded the international community into thinking that the executions are not based on political grounds”, he said.
Yazdan Bina also pointed out that the nuclear deal concluded by Tehran with the great six powers has set the Iranian regime into carrying out more execution campaigns against the execution of Kurds in eastern Kurdistan (Iranian Kurdistan).
According to Iranian Opposition sources, the Iranian regime executed annually hundreds of Kurds, Sunnis, Azeris, Turkmen and followers of other religions from Jews, Christians, Baha’is, Aliarsanyen (followers of an ancient Kurdish religion). The majority of those executed in Iran was of the Kurds because the majority of Iranian Sunnis are Kurds.

[ARA] ALEPPO – Militants of Nusra Front, al-Qaeda branch in Syria, bombed on Monday the Kurdish district of Sheikh Maqsoud in Aleppo, killing and wounding a number of civilians.
According to local sources, the Islamists hit the district with dozens of mortar shells.
“Four civilians were killed and more than ten others were wounded in the terror attack by Nusra militants,” local civil rights activist Jiwan Afrini told ARA News in Aleppo. “The wounded have been moved from the rubble to a field hospital for treatment.”
“The shelling has caused a mass destruction in residential buildings in Sheikh Maqsoud district,” the source said.
Sheikh Maqsoud is under the control of Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) –leading member of the western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
This comes after the al-Qaeda-affliated Nusra Front and its allies lost ground to the Kurdish-Arab alliance of the SDF in northern Aleppo.
On Friday, the SDF seized control of the villages of Tat Mrash and Tanab in the vicinity of Azaz city north of Aleppo after clashes with militant fighters of al-Nusra Front and the Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham.
On Sunday, the western-backed SDF units recaptured the village of Keshtaar in the suburb of Tel Rafaat city north of Aleppo. The village has been constantly used by Nusra militants and allied Islamists as a base from which they used to attack the Kurdish region of Afrin northwest of Aleppo.

A large roadside kaboomwent kaboom! near an IDF force at the Lebanese border near the Shebaa Farms area on Monday afternoon, leading the IDF to fire artillery shells at Hezbollah targets in the area for about an hour.
The kaboom targeted an IDF's Caterpillar D9 armored bulldozer and another armored vehicle. No soldiers have been hurt in the incident, the IDF said.
IDF Engineering forces cordoned off the area and searched for any additional explosives.
Lebanese media reported considerable Israel Air Force presence in the area. Al Mayadeen quoted a Lebanese security source saying the IDF had fired artillery at a Lebanese military post in the Bastra Farm area on the outskirts of Kfarchouba. The TV station also reported casualties on the Lebanese side.
Lebanese security officials said more than 50 Israeli shells hit several villages in the area where the Hezbollah operation was carried out. Residents along the border said shelling from Israeli tanks and artillery landed in agricultural areas inside Leb, but did not report casualties.
"We fired artillery at Hezbollah targets near the border," an IDF spokesperson said. "It happened near Nahal Sion."
The spokesperson denied there was an attempt at kidnapping soldiers, anti-tank fire, or infiltration of hard boyz into Israel.
The Lebanese terror organization Hezbollah grabbed credit for the attack, which they say was committed by the "Samir Kuntar Brigades."
Samir Kuntar was a notorious Hezbollah terrorist who spent almost three decades in Israeli prison for the murder of the Haran family and an Israeli police officer. After his release in a prisoners exchange deal in 2008, Kuntar returned to terror, planning attacks against Israel in the Golan Heights.

Kurdish-Arab alliance of the SDF regained five new villages and four farms, pushing ISIS back towards Raqqa after fierce clashes south of Kobane.
Speaking to ARA News, Sarhad Abbas, a Kurdish spokesman for the SDF, said that their units have regained the villages of Qadriya, Shamari, Kadusha, Majid and Huseniyah, besides four surrounding farms.
“The terror group had taken those villages and farms as military bases from which its militants used to bomb our headquarters in Kobane,” Abbas said.
At least five ISIS militants were killed in Monday’s clashes.
“We have also bombed four ISIS vehicles and we seized some weapons subsequent to the liberation of those areas,” the spokesman added.
Kobane is considered a main supply line for the SDF units, through which they send reinforcements towards the northern countryside of Aleppo as clashes continue between the Kurdish-Arab alliance and ISIS on the western bank of the Euphrates River. Similar clashes are now taking place in northern Aleppo between the alliance and al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front.

CHAKWAL: The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested an alleged member of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) at Basharat village in Chakwal district, official sources said on Monday.
The CTD identified the suspect as Abdul Rehman, an Afghan national, and said 650grams of explosives and three detonators had been seized from him.
A CTD team led by its district in-charge Inspector Masood Azhar had arrested the suspect during an intelligence-based action.
A case has been registered against the suspect and an investigation has been launched.
An official of the CTD said that they could not comment on the suspect’s plans but were certain he belonged to the TTP.
He added that the suspect was caught after the CTD’s intelligence wing recorded one of his telephonic conversations.
The Yemeni army and the Popular Committees managed on Sunday to eliminate all mercenaries of the Saudi-US aggression along the Al-Tawila mountain range overlooking the region of Najd Shabab and the Joreiba area in Lahj province.
The national military also restored the villages of Sarih, Hadid, Alfaqi, Tabin, Aloub, Sahi in Sharija and Karsh directorate as a part of the wide scale military operation south of Taiz province.
In a separate development, authorities in Yemen's southern city of Aden imposed a curfew on Monday after attacks blamed on terrorist gunmen killed at least 17 people, security sources said.
The curfew came into force at 8:00 pm local time (17:00 GMT) and will last until 5:00 am local time (02:00 GMT), the sabanews.net website said, citing a decision taken by the Aden Security Commission.
The decision comes after fierce battles on Sunday in the port of Aden that killed 17 people, among them nine members of the security forces including a colonel, the security sources said.

The guard told Rooters that Islamic State suicide boom-mobileers had attacked Es Sider, after which the hard boyz retreated, and that the tank at Ras Lanuf, about 20 km (13 miles) from Es Sider, had been hit by a rocket.
A front man for Libya's National Oil Company (NOC) said the tank was holding about 400,000 barrels of oil. The NOC was still trying to put out the fire late on Monday evening.

The group said it had attacked Es Sider after taking the nearby town of Ben Jawad. However, it was a brave man who first ate an oyster... there was no independent confirmation of its capture.
Es Sider is protected by Ibrahim al-Jathran's Petrol Facilities Guard, which has backed the government based in the city of Bayda in the east, but is also fighting other forces supporting that government.
Libya's crude oil production has dropped to less than a quarter of a 2011 high of 1.6 million barrels per day.

The Yemeni General Staff has announced the liberation of Ma'rib governorate from coup militias, as progress on a number of fronts has been achieved, according to Major-General Mohammed Al Magdashi, Yemeni Chief of Staff said.
During a meeting with several military and security commanders in the Third Military Zone in Ma'rib, Yemeni Chief of Staff, Major-General Mohammed Al Magdashi said the province has been liberated by the legitimate Yemeni Government's Armed Forces, backed by the Yemeni People's Resistance Forces, from the control of Houthi rebel militias.
He said that further victories are forthcoming on all frontlines against the rebel militias, urging the essential boosting of efforts to consolidate normal public life in the liberated areas in Ma'rib and Al Jawf provinces.
He called on the governmental forces, and the popular resistance loyal to the legitimacy, to work as one team to liberate the capital Sana'a from Houthi militias and Ali Abduallah Saleh's coup militias.
The meeting made several decisions related to the security and military aspects as well as coordination and cooperation between the various relevant sectors and the Popular Resistance Forces to consolidate the foundations of security, according to the official Yemeni News Agency.
[TODAYSZAMAN] In response to recent remarks by the Turkish president that signaled the immunity of the two co-chairs of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) would be lifted for their remarks about Kurdish autonomy, the HDP is preparing to organize rallies and workshops to tell people autonomy will serve to democratize the country.
The HDP will hold rallies under the banner "Self-rule and Democratic The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... ," the Hurriyet daily's news portal quoted HDP spokesperson Ayhan Bilgen as saying on Monday.
The party will also reportedly hold meetings, worships and conferences in Turkey's western provinces to inform people about self-rule and autonomy.
Prosecutors in Ankara and the southeastern province of Diyarbakir last week launched investigations into HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtas over his remarks in support of self-rule for the predominantly Kurdish Southeast and for supporting terrorism.
The other HDP co-chair, Figen Yuksekdag, as well as some other HDP figures are also facing investigations for their remarks calling for Kurdish autonomy during a recent Democratic Society Congress (DTK) congress.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him... suggested last week that the HDP co-chairs should be stripped of their parliamentary immunity, arguing their statements calling for autonomy in the Southeast are a "constitutional crime."
"The statements of the two co-chairs are definitely a constitutional crime," the president said in remarks published on Saturday, arguing that lifting their immunity "would positively affect the atmosphere" in the country regarding the fight against terrorism.
Government spokesperson Numan Kurtulmus, however; spoke against the possibility of lifting the immunities of HDP deputies at a presser he held following a Cabinet meeting on Monday.
Stating that neither party closures nor lifting immunities of deputies yielded any positive result in the Turkish politics in the past, Kurtulmus called on the HDP to adopt a discourse and methods that are in line with democracy.
Demirtas is accused by the Diyarbakir Chief Prosecutor's Office of committing a crime against the constitutional order for saying Kurds could have federal states, autonomous regions or even independent states in the future, during the DTK congress held on Dec. 26-27.
In another investigation by the Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office, Demirtas is accused of provoking hatred and enmity among people and for praising crime and criminals in his remarks during the Kobani protests last year.
Currently, fighting has been ongoing for around three weeks in the Cizre, Silopi and Sur districts in the predominantly Kurdish Southeast between the security forces and the PKK.
The DTK declaration for Kurdish autonomy came at a time when festivities have been ongoing for several weeks between the security forces and members of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in towns in the predominantly Kurdish Southeast.

But the masked executioner in the new video does not appear to be the same as the one in the video series released in late 2014 and early 2015, adding to the evidence that Jihadi John was killed in a U.S. drone strike on the Syrian city of Raqqa in November.
U.S. military officials have said that they are "reasonably certain" that the strike killed Mohammed Emwazi, the 27-year-old Londoner who was revealed to be Jihadi John by The Washington Post.
The release of the new video Sunday spawned a round of speculation about the identity of a man the British media immediately dubbed the "New Jihadi John."

[Ynet] Israel seals off home of Alaa Abu Jamal, who murdered Rabbi Yeshayahu Krishevsky in attack on Malkhei Yisrael Street, and destroys home of Baha Aliyan, who along with a second terrorist murdered three in East Talpiot attack.
IDF troops accompanied by police and Border Police enter the Jabel Mukaber neighborhood in East Jerusalem on Monday morning to demolish the homes of two Death Eaters who committed two of the more deadly attacks in the current wave of violence.
The first home is that of terrorist Alaa Abu Jamal, an employee of Israeli phone company Bezeq, who committed the vehicular and stabbing attack on Malkhei Yisrael Street in the capital on October 13, 2015. After ramming into pedestrians waiting at a bus stop with his company vehicle, Abu Jamal exited the car and started hacking at the maimed with an ax. He murdered 60-year-old Rabbi Yeshayahu Krishevsky and maimed several others, and was rubbed out himself by a security guard.
Abu Jamal is related to the two Death Eaters who committed the terror attack at the Har Nof synagogue in November 2014 - cousins Ghassan and Uday Abu Jamal. After that attack, he filmed a video in which he praised his relatives for the attack.
The second home demolished is that of terrorist Baha Aliyan who, along with Bilal Ranem, murdered three Israelis in Jerusalem's East Talpiot, also on October 13. The two boarded an Egged bus on Olei HaGardom Street in East Talpiot, a neighborhood also known as Armon HaNetziv, one armed with a gun and the other with a knife. They started shooting and stabbing passengers while the bus kept moving, killing three people -- Haviv Haim, 78, and Alon Govberg, 51, and Richard Lakin, 76 - and wounding several others.
Aliyan was rubbed out by security forces, while Ranem was seriously maimed.
Abu Jamal's home, which is located on the second floor of a three-floor building, will be sealed off rather than demolished as destroying it would compromise the rest of the structure.
Hundreds of Israeli police and soldiers were on site for the home destructions, which took place without incident after residents were cleared from the area.
"I don't have any other place to live," Allyan's father Mohammed told AFP. "The army just said 'we are going to destroy the house, get out' - this measure punishes a father, a mother, a brother, a sister and (four) children" who were living in the house."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in November vowed to expedite punitive house demolitions in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, which he said were "one of the most efficient tools" in discouraging Paleostinian attacks.

[DAWN] Pakistain on Monday said it is working on "leads provided by the Indian government to effectively counter and eradicate terrorism" from the region.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said "in line with its commitment, Pakistain's government is in touch with the Indian government" to address the problem.
The FO statement comes as sections of Indian media reported that New Delhi shared information with Islamabad on the Pathankot airbase attack.
Times of India reported that Indian National Security Advsier Ajit Doval provided "leads" on the Pathankot Air Force base terror attack to his Pak counterpart Naseer Khan Janjua and sought credible action on them.
A report on The Hindustan Times claims India shared with Pakistain the intercepts of calls made to Pakistain-based handlers by the faceless myrmidons who attacked the Pathankot airbase.
Condemning the attack on the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot, the FO front man said, "We understand the pain of many families who have lost their dear ones in this tragedy, as Pakistain itself is a major victim of terrorism."
"We have extended our deepest condolences to the government and people of India," he added.
He said the two countries share a common history and should remain committed to a sustained dialogue process.
"The challenge of terrorism calls for strengthening our resolve to a cooperative approach."
Earlier on Monday, an alliance of Kashmiri hard boy groups claimed the attack on the Pathankot airbase.
The United Jihad Council (UJC) said in a statement that the attack was a message to India that Kashmiri fighters could strike at any sensitive installation across India.
The deadly attack on the Pathankot airbase started before dawn on Saturday and gunbattles between the bully boyz and Indian forces continued into the third day as Indian forces conducted a search operation to clear the sprawling facility late Monday night.
At least seven Indian troops and five attackers have been killed in the siege.

The comments by Jurgen Todenhofer came a day after the IS leader threatened to attack the Jewish state.
"The only country ISIS fears is Israel. They told me they know the Israeli army is too strong for them," Todenhofer, a former German parliament member, told the Jewish News, a London weekly, last Sunday.
The investigative news hound said that the terror group was confident it could beat American and British ground troops, but feared the Israeli forces.
"They think they can defeat US and UK ground troops, who they say they have no experience in city guerrilla or terrorist strategies. But they know the Israelis are very tough as far as fighting against guerrillas and terrorists," he said.
The journalist said the jihadists "told me the Israeli army is the real danger."
"We can't defeat them with our current strategy. These people [the IDF] can fight a guerrilla war," the IS fighters said, according to Todenhofer.
Todenhofer was the first Western journalist who was allowed extensive access to the group, spending 10 days with its fighters last year.

[Dhaka Tribune] A man was killed in what was described as a shootout with RAB at Rupnagar in the capital's Mirpur early yesterday.
Al-amin Jony alias Kala Jony alias Jony Sarker, 30, son of Jamal Sarker of Comilla, was a criminal and was killed in the shootout at Eastern Housing area, said RAB.
But his family claimed that he was detained by some plainclothes men, who identified themselves as law enforcement officials, on December 28 last year.
Jony lived with his family in the area, and has a child named Nafu, 3.
ASP Unu Mong of RAB 4, who took Jony's body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital from the scene of the shootout, told the Dhaka Tribune Jony and four to five others attacked a patrol team of RAB 4 in the area that triggered the shootout around 2:40am.
"Jony sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of gunfire while the others managed to flee. He was taken to the hospital but doctors pronounced him dead He's dead, Jim! ," he added.
A pistol and two rounds were also recovered from the scene, said ASP Mong.
RAB said Jony had been accused in 15 cases lodged over several charges, including murder, rape and robbery.
But Jony's brother-in-law Selim Reza told the Dhaka Tribune Jony had been named in seven to eight cases filed with different cop shoppes but most of those were false.
"Around a month ago, Jony was accused in a case filed over possession of illegal arms. The case was filed by RAB," he said.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] It was as if Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... executed yet another terrorist when Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir announced the severing of ties with Iran last night.
In fact, one could argue that the Iranian regime resembles the single biggest terrorist threat, not just to Saudi Arabia and the region, but to global security as well.
Iran -- in a typical manner -- pretended that it was trying to prevent protesters from attacking and setting fire to the Saudi embassy in Tehran, but in reality it did not prevent them (it wouldn't be surprising, or a first, if it turns out that it actually encouraged them as well).
Iran also criticized the execution of convicted hate preacher Nimr al-Nimr, who had been described by Saudi authorities as an "instigator of sedition" and was found guilty of seeking "foreign meddling" in the kingdom, among other charges. Through its media and various mouthpieces, Iran made the issue appear sectarian -- because Saudi Arabia is a Sunni state and Nimr was Shiite. Conveniently, Iranian officials avoided mentioning the fact that only 3 of the 47 executed forces of Evil were Shiite.

As theocratic dictatorships (one with a crust of sleazy royals) we have nothing in common with either of them.
we should not sell them weapons
we should not buy their oil
We should send their embassy staff home in a row boat
we should ban their funding of mosques, schools, educational institutions, think tanks, university departments or anything at all. Block and confiscate all their moneys.
If we were serious about winning the war on terror that is a start
backed up by the declaration of war on the Caliphate (not IS, the Caliphate) and the banning of sharia.
All who support sharia should be locked up for treason or - if dual citizens - deported and stripped of Western citizenship.

There is "high probability" that at least two gunnies have entered the Indian Air Force base before Punjab Police SP Salwinder Singh, his jeweller friend Rajesh Verma and Singh's cook was kidnapped along with an SUV on December 31, the sources said.
Verma, whose throat was slit but survived, told his interrogators that he had heard the four terrorists, who boarded the vehicle after hijacking it, talking to their handlers, believed to be in Pakistain.
The handler apparently ticked off the four gunnies saying why they could not enter the air base as two other gunnies have already reached the target to carry out the attack last Saturday.
The four gunnies told their handlers that they were on their way but could not reach the base as there were several police pickets on the way, according to details of investigations.
There is also possibility of these four gunnies entered the Pathankot air base in the morning of January 1, much before an alarm was sounded in the area to secure all vital installations later in the evening of that day, sources said.
The hijacked vehicle was also found near the air base.
Crucial hours were lost in verifying the Punjab Police SP's claims that he was kidnapped along with two others by the terrorists.
Sources said that coppers whom the SP had informed about the gunnies initially did not take him seriously due to his "dubious past", thus leading to some crucial hours being lost.
Sources said that immediately after the alarm was sounded, security at all vital installations, including the Pathankot air base, was enhanced to the highest level to make it difficult for the gunnies to mount an attack.
Security agencies believe there were six gunnies and they were divided into two groups -- one of 4 and the other with 2 members.
The top security brass of the Government knew by January 1 that Pathankot air base would be the target of the terrorists, who were still on the lam and steps were taken immediately to beef up security.
First priority for the Government was to secure the assets parked in the technical area and a NSG team comprising about 160 commandos was dispatched and they were deployed along with other special forces to guard the assets in the inner periphery.

In front of dozens of people, ISIS extremists beheaded a 40-year-old Syrian man in Raqqa.
“The victim was arrested by the militants on Monday morning for verbally insulting the Caliphate,” a media activists told ARA News, under the condition of anonymity for security concerns.
