#2  Rantburg would be ranked at or near the top if we based this on the proportion of substantive, informative content.

It saddens me to say it, but a lot of right of center sites are simply about the outrage pr0n and collecting the Adclick bucks from the outraged; not actually informing people, let alone changing anything.

That would be vulgar.

#3  Fascinating how many of them, like Rantburg, are not primarily oriented toward politics: The Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post, Watts Up With That, MEMRI.org, JihadWatch, and so on. And how many others thoughtfully analyze politics and policy, rather thsn emote.

I wonder what a similar chart on the left would look like.

Afghanistan
Taliban says will not take part in Afghan peace talks
[Rooters] The Taliban said on Saturday it would not take part in peace talks brokered by a four-way group including representatives of Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, and the United States.

The Taliban, ousted from power in a U.S.-led military intervention in 2001, has been waging a violent insurgency to try to topple the Western-backed Afghan government and reestablish a fundamentalist Islamic regime.

Following a meeting of the so-called Quadrilateral Coordination Group made up of representatives of the four countries in Kabul in February, officials said they expected direct peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban to begin in early March.

But the Taliban, which calls itself the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, publicly denied they would be participating in any upcoming talks in Islamabad.

With the American troops remaining in the country conducting air strikes and special operations raids in support of the Kabul government, the Taliban would not participate in talks, the group said in a statement.

"We reject all such rumors and unequivocally state that the leader of Islamic Emirate has not authorized anyone to participate in this meeting," the statement said. "(Islamic Emirate) once again reiterates that unless the occupation of Afghanistan is ended, black lists eliminated and innocent prisoners freed, such futile misleading negotiations will not bear any results."

Direct talks between Kabul and the Taliban have been on hold since last year's announcement of the death of the movement's founder and long-time leader Mullah Mohammed Omar some two years earlier.

New leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour has laid down preconditions for taking part in any talks as he struggles to overcome factional infighting, with some breakaway groups opposing any negotiations whatsoever.

Brave Man Chooses To Self-Identify As Man
h/t Instapundit
Declaring that he "has to be true to himself," local man Steve Bakowski announced Friday that he is bravely stepping out and choosing to openly self-identify as a man.

"I don’t care what people say. I don’t care what people call me," an audacious Bakowski told reporters. "I know in my heart that I’m a man. I’ve always known it, ever since I was a kid. I’ve never even second-guessed it. So I’m going to tell it like it is. I’m a man, and I’m not ashamed to say it."

When asked about the possibility of facing backlash for his courageous stance, Bakowski was undeterred.

"I know our culture can be hostile to people like me," he stated. "But I’m prepared to face the consequences. I know there are others out there who feel exactly like I do. They need to know they’re not strange, they’re not some weird freaks."

"They need to know they’re not alone," he added.

PJ Media's Roger L. Simon: Is There a Cure for Trumpophrenia?
>BLUF: [PJ Media] Which leads me to the real topic: Trumpophrenia. I suffer from it and it's only getting worse. I change my opinion about Donald almost every five minutes - and I can't be the only one. There may be millions of us. For some it's even more problematic. These people are not Trumpophrenic. They are Trumpophobic. And, if this Drudge link has any veracity, they have taken their problem to their shrinks.

I haven't gone that far - yet. But I am searching for a cure for Trumpophrenia before I have to reach for the Haldol. If he becomes president, I don't want any of us to become real life schizophrenics ourselves, unable to predict what our leader will say or do next.

But basically I think he's a good guy and his heart is the right place. His instincts for making America great again are also basically good. So I will make my plea. Donald, you and only you are the cure for Trumpophrenia. Do it. Take us out of our misery. If you want to be president, start acting like one. Now.

#4  It amazes me that the US conservatives had a proven capable man who fit Conservative bona fides and is quite popular and yet discarded him. Perry seemed ideal. Trump should not have gotten past the basic fact checking any rational person would do.

#9  I liked Perry too. But he had that brain freeze when he couldn't remember all the departments he'd cut. It's not like I never had a brain freeze but I never ran for president either. What really beat Perry though was all the Establishment money that went to Romney. It would seem at this point that the only way to beat Establishment money is to run a guy who can fund his own campaign and get the media to talk about him without him even spending his money. I must admit that after that last debate Cruz and Kasich looked like the grown ups while Rubio and Trump looked like a couple of quarrelsome, stupid little boys. Part of that at least, the Trump part, was certainly Rubio's plan. Even so I'm past the emotional part. But I still don't trust Kasich, he still looks too Establishment, and I still don't think that Cruz can beat the Beest. I still want a candidate who is at least willing to talk about the problems we have with China and immigration. So when the emotion runs out we still have to be rational.

#10  A Walker/Perry fan also.

HOWEVER, neither of them had that make up needed to take down the GOPe and they are the real enemy because they should be the opposition to the Dems but are in fact on the same side. The statist, corporatist, graftocrat side of which Hillary is the titular head.

I think Cruz can and will do it if he gets the chance. Trump can if he wants to, but, I'm afraid he'll turn out to be a go along to get along less classy version of GHWB.

#11  Dear Roger,
Please accept my sympathy concerning your delicate mental condition. Perhaps it will assist you to remember that this election is neither about your phrenias or mine. It's about the candidates.

Granted, the mental stability of at least one of the candidates (specifically the one you mentioned) is very suspect indeed. Even a minimal amount of stress seems to send him into a blathering outrage.
His outrageous conduct, during the debates, brings back mental images of Nikita Khrushchev beating on the podium with his shoe.
But we must admit that even with his mental instability, Khrushchev was a pretty good leader... for a communist. And the candidate under discussion (in your article) embodies many of the same traits and philosophy of Nikita Khrushchev.
But it remains imperative to remember that electing him president is no panacea for either your phobias or mine.

My advice to you is to kick back, take a tranquilizer and just let it go. Just bask in the realization that the candidate causing you such emotional trauma, probably has less than zero chance of becoming president anyway.

Migrant Killed in Brawl at Swedish Asylum Center

[AnNahar] A 19-year-old asylum-seeker was stabbed to death Friday in a brawl at a Swedish refugee hostel, police said, adding that three other asylum-seekers had been arrested. Police were alerted to a fight at the Stora Asylum Center outside of the town of Lindesberg, some 160 kilometers (100 miles) west of Stockholm, at about 5:15 am (0415 GMT) on Friday. The victim was stabbed in the throat and rushed to hospital, but died shortly after his arrival, said police. Two other murders have occurred at Swedish refugee centers this year.

04/03/2016 – TRAISKIRCHEN, Austria – Donation Centre Burned to the Ground
Catholic charity Caritas had their donation centre burned down in the Austrian town of Traiskirchen which has been made a hub for migrants. Some 120 pallets full of clothing and hygiene products were destroyed in the blaze, reports Kurier. Over 500 cases of violence were recorded at a single Asylum centre last year in Brandenburg. Also included were at least 16 sexual offenses including three that involved the abuse of children. Two homicides were also recorded by police. “We need more police and a stringent deportation of criminals,” said a spokesman for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

04/03/2016 – MUNICH, Germany – PEGIDA Man Fined €2,100 for speaking
“Do you want total war?” was enough to land a PEGIDA speaker a 2,100 euro fine after using the sentence in a speech at a meeting in Munich last October. The judge ruled that the sentence had once been uttered by Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels in a 1943 speech at the Berlin sports palace during the second world war, and so the man had broken German law.

Major Busts in Syria, Lebanon Shed Light on Captagon Trade
Bottom line: everybody is making it, and many are taking it.
[AnNahar] A string of major drug busts in Syria and Leb has drawn new attention to the trade in captagon, an illegal substance that has flourished in the chaos of Syria's war.

Security forces in both countries have clamped down in recent months on exports of the psychostimulant, produced in swathes of Syrian and Lebanese territory where government oversight is lax or non-existent.

"When the Syrian crisis started, Leb and Syria were transformed into a gateway to smuggle captagon," a Lebanese security source told Agence La Belle France Presse on condition of anonymity.

"It must be considered that there is nothing more difficult to carry out nor more doubtful of success nor more dangerous to handle than to initiate a new order of things; for the reformer has enemies in all those who profit by the old order, and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new order; this lukewarmness arising partly from the incredulity of mankind who does not truly believe in anything new until they actually have experience of it."

Nicolo Machiavelli (1469 - 1527)

There is an old story about a fire on an oil drilling platform in the North sea. It was winter and the water temperature was COLD; you had eight to ten minutes in the water before you died. The waves were bad and a small boat was waiting underneath for a trapped worker to jump. He did and was pulled out of the water in time. When asked why he had decided to jump he answered, "The pain of burning alive overcame my fear of jumping into that ocean".

Female attacker rams into soldier at Gush Etzion junction
[Ynet] Terrorist coming from direction of Jerusalem drives onto the sidewalk at the main West Bank junction, hitting one soldier and lightly wounding him; she was shot dead by troops posted at the scene.

A female attacker tried to ram into soldiers posted at the Gush Etzion Junction in the West Bank on Friday morning.

The woman, who arrived at the junction from the direction of Jerusalem, drove onto the sidewalk and hit one of the soldiers, lightly wounding him. Other soldiers were able to get out of the way on time.

She was shot to death by soldiers from the Oketz Unit posted at the junction, and a knife was found on the dashboard of her vehicle.

The wounded soldier was taken to the Shaare Zedek Medical Center suffering injuries to his legs.

The Gush Etzion junction is one of the main targets for terror attacks over the past five month.
Al Manar points out:
The Gush Etzion junction, where the operation took place, is a major intersection near a large block of Zionist settlements in the southern West bank, and a major hub for hitchhiking soldiers and settlers on the road between Al-Khalil and Al-Quds.
And The Times of Israel reports it was suicide by IDF:
An initial investigation shows that the Paleostinian woman killed when she attacked and maimed an Israeli soldier in the West Bank on Friday morning had had a row with her husband and decided to commit suicide.

Paleostinian media reports later identified the attacker as mother of four Amani Husni Sabatin, 34, from the Paleostinian village of Husan, near Bethlehem.

Turkey Launches New Artillery Strikes on IS in Syria

Turkish artillery fired shells from howitzers positioned in its border region against IS targets in the north of Syria's Aleppo province, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported reported.

This was the second time within a week that Turkey had shelled IS targets in Syria, after a period of over a month when there had been no reports of Turkish strikes against the hard boy group.

Turkey had on February 28 shelled six IS targets in Syria a total of 41 times, a senior government official said this week.

From mid-February, Turkish artillery had also on successive days shelled targets of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) inside Syria, with the military saying it was responding to incoming fire.

But Turkey has not shelled any positions held by Syrian Kurdish fighters inside Syria since the ceasefire was implemented from at midnight last Friday, the official said.

Police officer killed in Egypt's Shubra Al-Kheima
[AlAhram] The incident took place as police were targeting suspects believed to be involved in the killing of four coppers earlier this week

A senior police officer was killed early on Thursday during a firefight with suspected criminals in the Shubra Al-Kheima neighborhood north of Cairo, Egypt's interior ministry said in a statement.

The incident erupted as police were targeting two suspects believed to be involved in an attack on a police force that killed four coppers earlier this week in Qalyoubiya's Khanka district, state news agency MENA said.

Two coppers, a captain and a sergeant, were maimed during the exchange of fire, the ministry added.

A security source said police have identified two suspects in Thursday's killing--both runaways who had previously been sentenced to death and life in prison in absentia. Two other suspects were also nabbed

On Sunday, assailants opened fire on a police vehicle carrying four coppers during a raid to arrest outlaws in the area, officials said.

Arrested militants planned 'biological' attacks: Morocco
[AlAhram] Morocco said Thursday that the alleged members of a krazed killer cell it tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
in mid-February, including a French national, were plotting to carry out "biological" attacks in the kingdom.

"Some of the seized substances (from the suspects) are classified by international organizations which specialise in health issues as falling within the category of biological weapons dangerous for their capacity to paralyse and destroy the nervous system and cause death," the interior ministry said.

"Members of the terrorist cell had prepared these deadly substances with a view to using them in their terrorist projects inside the kingdom," it said in a statement.

On February 18, the ministry announced it had dismantled a "terrorist cell" of 10 people suspected of having links to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. krazed killer group and planning attacks in the North African country.

The suspects, including a Frenchie, were arrested in several towns, it said, without giving further details on their identities.

Morocco has been on guard against deadly attacks like those claimed by IS in Tunisia last year that killed 59 foreign tourists.

Rabat says 152 "terrorist cells" have been busted since 2002, including 31 over the past three years with ties to bully boyz in Iraq and Syria.

A study by the US-based Soufan Group said in December that at least 1,200 Moroccans had travelled to fight alongside IS in Iraq and Syria in the past 18 months.

'The Chance of Ben Carson Jumping Onboard with Trump Is Very Real'
[PJ Media] Sources close to the good doctor have told Independent Journal Review's Benny Johnson that Donald Trump is most likely to receive Carson's endorsement. "Trump was contacting Dr. Carson regularly during the campaign and remains in contact," a former Carson staffer told Independent Journal Review on condition of anonymity. "I would not be surprised if the first call Ben got today was from Trump." The staffer added, "The chance of Ben jumping onboard with Trump is very real."

Another former Carson staffer said, "Carson would be the crown jewel of an endorsement for Trump." The retired neurosurgeon would bring a degree of moral support to the real estate tycoon, who has taken hits from evangelical leaders for being indecent and untrustworthy, and Marco Rubio has repeatedly denounced him as a "con artist." Carson, by contrast, is well regarded as a moral man, primarily by evangelicals.

Carson's former Iowa campaign chair Rob Taylor said Trump would "rarely say anything ill of Carson." If he were Trump, Taylor said "Carson would be my #1 pick for VP. He has the balance and reasonability that Trump needs."

#5  I hate to remind Rob Taylor that Trump compared Ben Carson to a pathologically unstable person "a child molester, a sick puppy, a child molester" back in November of 2015.

Rubio is showing how ill tempered and unsuitable Trump is by goading him. Its not Rubio that seems concerned with the size of things, its Trump who reacted like a 12 year old in public.

Perhaps Trump should be more concerned with fascist statements about ordering our military to commit war crimes and they must obey becuase he is Der Furher, oops I mean The Leader... "I'm a leader. I’ve always been a leader. I’ve never had any problem leading people. If I say do it, they’re gonna do it. That’s what leadership is all about." He has no clue about military leadership, jsut scummy business practices and being a Boss not a leader.

Take his lying to the rubes backing him on immigration, when he has advocated and abused H1B and H2B visas. Now he is "flexible" on immigration, and admits he told the NY Times that the immigration stuff was just an election ploy? Hey Trumpites, how it feel to have been played?

The issue is not Rubio, its the duplicity of Trump that should be of concern. You cant get more silver spoon establishment than him (born rich, uses the government and crony capitalism, harvard etc), yet people delude themselves into seeing anti-establishment somehow.

Rubio is finished anyway since he apparently cannot win his home state. So now its down to a split convention or else Ted Cruz.

If not Cruz (Or in a brokered convention possdibly Kasich or Rubio), then its Hil-liar-y vs Tantrum Trump. With either of those two, big government, K-Street and the insiders win, while constitutionalism, small government and individual freedom lose.

Wake up and wake those around you who are Trump followers before its too late.

#6  How much do trolls get paid?

The real issue is as Noone wrote, the protected (and connected) vs the unprotected. If it was a constitutional republic the other issue would be important. However, we blind ourselves intentionally because we 'believe'. No different than the socialists. No, there is no 'right' man to make it all work again. We're past the period of a nation of laws, those only apply to the 'little people' to keep the game going. It's really a choice of 'champion' as it was in Rome. The others all represent in one way or another the establishment which has no need for 'consent' other than you paying your taxes on threat of loss of liberty and giving over your sons and daughters to defend their power (cause they don't give up theirs). You get to choose Caesar, Pompey, or Crassus.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
More pairs of terrorists carry out attacks than before
[Ynet] Israel is no longer facing a "lone wolf" intifada - now these wolves hunt in packs as pairs and sometimes trios band together to commit terror attacks.

Since the beginning of the current escalation of violence, there have been 13 attacks committed by pairs of Death Eaters from the West Bank or East Jerusalem. This trend is slowly beginning to challenge the perception that attacks are mainly carried out by "lone wolves" - single attackers - who go out to commit an attack without telling anyone of their intentions in advance.

Two or perhaps three Death Eaters committed the attack on Wednesday night in Har Brakha, while two others - Labib Azzam and Muhammad Zaghlawan, both 17 year old students from the Paleostinian village of Qaryut - committed the attack at the Eli settlement earlier in the day.

Sherani’s remarks
[DAWN] THERE are few things as predictable in the country as the reaction of the religious right to progressive causes, especially the empowerment and protection of women.

When the regressive is confronted by the progressive, a meltdown is inevitable. Continuing that peculiar tradition is Mohammad Khan Sherani, chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology and champion of many a dubious cause.

He has claimed that not only is the recent pro-women legislation passed by the Punjab

Dictators did more for Islamisation, says Sherani
That should tell you something right there.
[DAWN] The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) noted on Thursday that only dictators had worked towards the ‘Islamisation’ of laws in the country, whereas democratic governments -- especially the PML-N -- had been working against Islamic norms.

The council also formally rejected Punjab’s recently-passed Protection of Women bill, as well as the draft of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
’s Domestic Violence bill for encouraging Western norms in society.

Following the conclusion of the two-day CII meeting, Maulana Mohammad Khan Sherani and several council members denounced subsequent democratic governments for failing to ensure that all laws of the country are formulated in accordance with Islam.

"Pakistain was established on the basis of the two-nation theory and one of those nations are the followers of Islam. Therefore, all laws and principles in the country have to be in accordance with Islam," Maulana Sherani said, adding, "But nearly all efforts to bring all laws under the ambit of Sharia have been undertaken in undemocratic eras."

He said that while the CII was established in 1962, six laws -- including the Hudood Ordinance and the blasphemy law -- were formulated on the recommendations of council in 1983, while the Objectives Resolution of 1949 was incorporated into the Constitution in 1985.

"These milestones towards Islamisation were achieved in undemocratic eras, but the PML-N, which carries the name ‘Muslim League’, is trying to undo all Islamic structures in the country," Maulana Sherani maintained.

He was referring to the two bills scrutinised by the council on Thursday. While the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Assembly has already approved the Protection of Women bill, the KP draft bill is unique in that this is the first instance in Pakistain’s history where a province has asked the CII to whet a law.

"Both the bills -- the Punjab law and the KP draft -- are contrary to Sharia, our culture and the norms of our society," the CII chief said.

Both bills, he claimed, aimed to undo ‘family values’ as there was no mention of respectable relations such as mothers, sons/daughters, husbands and wives.

"The bills contain the terms ‘male/female child, persons etc’, which discourages relations based on family values -- promoting the way they live in the West," Maulana Sherani said, as other holy mans belonging to the Shia, Deobandi and Barelvi sects nodded in appreciation. The lone woman in the CII, Dr Samia Raheel Qazi, was also among them.

The CII chairman said that another conspiracy to break the family structures was bringing women out of the protection of their homes.

"Now they want to encourage women to kick their husbands out and see them in chains -- eventually the state and authorities will be in a position to control society," he added.

The CII chief was asked if there were any alternative solutions for the issues and problems that had led Punjab t pass the bill.

"The solution is that Punjab should undo this Bill and then forward a formal request to the CII to suggest ways and means for the protection of women from domestic violence," he said, adding that laws against domestic violence were already present in the Pakistain Penal Code.

Attacks in East German Town Blamed on Far-right 'guerrilla'
[NEWSMAX] A string of attacks in the eastern town of Nauen near Berlin was likely committed by an anti-immigrant "guerrilla" group led by a local member of Germany's biggest far-right party, officials said Friday.

Their alleged crimes included an arson attack in August on a gym intended as temporary housing for refugees. Nobody was injured in the fire but the building was destroyed in what authorities described as the worst attack on a refugee shelter in the state for over 20 years.

a local councilman for the National Democratic Party who is suspected of forming a "criminal organization" intent on committing crimes against migrants colonists and foreigners, according to prosecutor in the eastern state of Brandenburg.

"One gets the impression that a kind of 'right wing urban guerrilla' was active in Nauen over the past year," said Karl-Heinz Schroeter, Brandenburg's interior minister. The group is also suspected of setting alight a Polish man's car, storming a local council meeting and damaging offices of a left-wing party.

The alleged ringleader, 29-year-old NPD councilman Maik Schneider, was arrested the same day Germany's highest court opened hearings on a bid to outlaw the party. Germany's 16 states claim the NPD promotes a racist and anti-Semitic agenda. A ban would prevent it from receiving state funding, which political parties are entitled to.

Nigeria Military Shuts Cattle Market 'financing' Boko Haram
[NEWSMAX] Nigeria's military has closed one of Africa's biggest cattle markets, charging sales of stolen animals is helping finance Boko Haram

The three-week-old closure of the market in Maiduguri, the main city in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, is piling on tensions and economic strain in a city overrun by war refugees, and is increasing animosity toward the military, according to people interviewed by the AP.

Some 20,000 cattle and goats locked into the main abattoir are dying from lack of water and food, according to Abubakar Abba of the Livestock Traders' Union.

The closure is affecting markets as far away as Lagos, the commercial capital more than 1,500 kilometers (940 miles) southwest of Maiduguri, where cattle prices are rising daily, said Umar Adamu, chairman of the United Butchers' Association.

Maiduguri's was the last major cattle market operating in the region, where the insurgency has closed at least eight others, said Musa Abdullah of the Cattle Traders' Union. Traders came from southern Nigeria as well as West and Central African nations.

"This clampdown has affected thousands of truck drivers, loaders, butchers, even water sellers ... the consequences will be devastating," Abdullah warned, saying his organization has 12,000 members and the butchers' more than 200,000.

Oil output freeze - meaningless, says US expert
The agreement on freezing the oil output at January levels, which has already received support from a number of countries, is theater and is not meaningful, Arthur Berman, an independent US geological consultant with thirty-seven years of experience in petroleum exploration and production believes.

“It has contributed to a sentiment-based rally in crude oil prices over the last several weeks but is otherwise meaningless,” Berman told Trend.
Gasoline jumped 40 cents a gallon last couple weeks in Chicago. That's some sentiment...
Energy ministers of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Qatar agreed to freeze the oil output at Jan.11 level. Later, Russia’s Energy Minister Alexander Novak said that over 15 countries have joined this initiative.

It's called supply and demand. The new demand is the now authorized export market. You are now competing against the world. First you shipped your jobs and employment overseas. Now something as fundamental as energy is now open to world demand. You compete with a hungry giant of China and disruptions in other geographical locations. Your product will sell well and at the highest price it can be got. It was a nice honeymoon while it lasted.

Turkish authorities seize newspaper close to cleric Gulen: state media
[REUTERS] Turkish authorities seized control of the country's largest newspaper on Friday in a widening crackdown against supporters of U.S.-based Muslim holy man Fethullah Gulen, an influential foe of President Tayyip Erdogan.

Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse a few thousand supporters who gathered outside Zaman newspaper's offices and chanted, "Free press cannot be silenced."

Rights groups and European officials criticized the confiscation of Zaman and its sister publication, the English-language Today's Zaman, which occurred on the eve of a summit between The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and as concerns mount that the Turkish government is stifling critical media.

Administrators were appointed to run Zaman at the request of an Istanbul prosecutor, state-run Anadolu Agency reported. Officials were not immediately available to confirm the reports.

Erdogan accuses Gulen of conspiring to overthrow the government by building a network of supporters in the judiciary, police and media. Gulen denies the charges. The two men were allies until police and prosecutors seen as sympathetic to Gulen opened a corruption probe into Erdogan's inner circle in 2013.

"It has been a habit for the last three, four years, that anyone who is speaking against government policies is facing either court cases or prison, or such control by the government," said Abdulhamit Bilici, editor-in-chief of Zaman.

"This is a dark period for our country, our democracy."

Zaman is Turkey's biggest selling newspaper, with a circulation of 650,000 as of the end of February, according to media-sector monitor MedyaTava website.

Four panchayat members arrested in RYK for marrying off minor as Vani
[DAWN] Police on Friday placed in durance vile
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
four panchayat members suspected of marrying off a nine-year-old girl in Vani in a Rahim Yar Khan village after taking notice of the incident and registering a First-Information Report (FIR) against the alleged offenders.

Three of the four suspects arrested have been identified as Punnu, Ghazwa and Kaalu after FIR no. 46/2016 was registered under Section 310 of the Pakistain Penal Code, Gulshan Fareed police checkpost in-charge Ilyas Ali told Dawn adding that the marriage has been halted.

A panchayat had decided earlier this week to give the girl as Vani in marriage to a 14-year-old boy in order to settle what was alleged to be a murder dispute. The arrested men are said to be signatories of the panchayat ruling.

After the girl's brother's wife died earlier in February, her family suspected foul play. A panchayat was held in which it was decided that the nine-year-old sister of the alleged murderer would be married as Vani to a 14-year-old cousin of the dear departed wife. The man was also asked to pay a Rs150,000 fine to his deceased wife's relatives.

Ilyas Ali said, "As soon as we learnt of the incident, we registered an FIR and then arrested the suspects in a raid. We also recovered the panchayati order that gave the girl as Vani in marriage to the boy."

He said it was possible more suspects would be arrested in the case.

[DAWN] LAHORE: Age old antiques and souvenirs were reported missing from Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Assembly's museum after a protest against the provincial government over the execution of Mumtaz Qadri ended on Friday, the assembly's security supervisor Riaz Ahmed told DawnNews.

Riaz Ahmed claimed that the antiques were "stolen from the museum within assembly premises by the protesters who ransacked the building" after Friday prayers. DawnNews reported that the antiques included a gift from the Government of Oman.

An assembly employee told media that around a hundred protesters came, beat the men on duty at the museum and stole some antiques from the place.

Police reached the spot following the incident and collected evidence but so far no one has been taken into custody.

People belonging to different religious groups and right wing political parties staged protests and brief sit-ins in Lahore against the execution of Mumtaz Qadri, the former Elite Force commando hanged till death for killing former Punjab governor Salman Taseer.

Protesters were carrying placards and banners inscribed with anti-government and pro-Qadri slogans.

UAE Forms Two Takfiri Brigades in Yemen’s Aden
[ALMANAR.LB] Authorities of the United Arab Emirates are working on establishing two military brigades for the takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
groups in the southern Yemeni province of Aden, Al-Manar Website learned.

An official at the Yemeni Ministry of Defense told the "Khabar" news agency that UAE has recently decided to establish two brigades of these groups in Al-Mashareea area in the region of Dar Saad, named Zyed Brigade and Khalifa Brigade.

A terrorist takfiri called Mehran Al-Qabati has been also appointed as a commander of one of the two brigades.

According to the source, the project is facing strong opposition by southern leaders, who belief that the brigades are going to be built on "Sunni religious basis," which may provoke further sectarian conflicts in the city.

Since being seized by forces of Saudi-US aggression, Aden is witnessing destabilized security, and tens of almost daily liquidations have been recorded.

Syrian rebels gain yardage in Raqqa
KOBANE – Western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Friday recaptured new areas in northern Syria subsequent to clashes with militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), military sources reported.

The Kurdish-Arab SDF alliance was able to expel ISIS fighters from strategic towns and villages in the countrysides of Tel Abyad in Raqqa province and Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in Hasakah province, northeastern Syria.

“The SDF units liberated the Shamandour town and the villages of Saraya and Tarwaziya near Tel Abyad city in northern Raqqa province,” Kurdish spokesman for the SDF Sarhad Abbas told ARA News.

“Our forces collected dead bodies of 13 ISIS militants after the clashes, while the rest withdrew from those areas to avoid further losses under heavy blows by the SDF,” Abbas said, adding that their forces have seized “a large deal of ammunition and heavy weapons during the clashes on Friday evening”.

Also on Friday, ISIS jihadis evacuated their strongholds in the Sere Kaniye countryside of Hasakah province.

“The terror group was forced to retreat from main areas in Sere Kaniye after being hit with heavy artillery shelling by our forces,” the SDF spokesman said.

At least eight ISIS militants were reportedly killed in the Sere Kaniye bombardment.

Also on Friday, the U.S. oil rig count fell by 8 to a total of 392, oilfield services firm Baker Hughes reported. At this time last year, drillers were operating 922 rigs in U.S. oil fields.

Brent futures rose $1.63 to $38.70 a barrel, while U.S. crude futures settled at $35.92 a barrel, up $1.35, or 3.91 percent for the session. U.S. oil also posted a 9.5 percent weekly gain.

Why nearly 100,000 people are calling for Bill Clinton's arrest
[NYP] Nearly 100,000 people have signed an online petition calling for Bill Clinton’s arrest for violating Massachusetts election law on Super Tuesday by campaigning close to -- and even inside -- polling places.

The drive was launched by supporters of Bernie Sanders, who accused Bubba of stumping for his wife, Hillary, within 150 feet of a polling location in New Bedford and inside others in Newton and Boston’s West Roxbury neighborhood.

"This is a call for the immediate arrest of President Bill Clinton for clear, knowing and egregious violation of the campaign laws to swing an election in a significant way. It could not be any clearer in the Massachusetts General Laws," the petition states.

Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin’s website says, "On Election Day, certain activities are prohibited within the polling location and within 150 feet of the polling place," including the "solicitation of votes for or against, or any other form of promotion or opposition of, any person or political party."

The Sanders supporters said photos prove the ex-prez violated the law by attending a rally outside a polling place in New Bedford and entering polling stations in the other two communities.

As used in this paragraph and M.G.L. c. 54, § 65, the "premises" where or on which the building stands means only the grounds in the immediate vicinity of the building, and does not include the entirety of a large parcel of real property. No person shall collect or solicit signatures on nomination papers or petitions of any kind within 150 feet of an entrance door to the building. The police officer shall enforce this rule under the direction of the warden. Access to the polling place must be open and unobstructed and the voters may not be hindered.

#8  From everything I read about this 'incident', all that Bill did was go around and shake a bunch of hands. There's nothing illegal about that. Furthermore, for what it's worth, Snopes didn't think any laws were broken, either. #9  Shaking hands within 150 feet of the entrance pf a pooling station is a violation of the law. That law was put there for good reasons. Also, a lady was blocked from voting by all the people milling around; another violation. She has phone video evidence.

#11  Sven - if that's the case, then I stand corrected.

Funny this - when I went to vote on Tuesday, I dug up an old 'Buchanan for President' button and pinned it on my jacket. My roommate, a cop, said 'I'm surprised they didn't ask you to take the button off', because apparently, that's a violation of the law.

Another 'funny thing' - a guy running for Quincy city council was out in front of the school shaking hands with everybody, so that's why I concluded that gladhanding was okay.

Freed Italians say they are psychologically devastated
"I'm feeling much better"
The two Italian oil workers held by IS in Sabratha were free early today when local militia raided a house near the brick factory to the south of the town.

Gino Pollicardo and Filippo Calcagno, seized last July, were pictured looking worn and haggard as they phoned their families back home. In a hand-written note Pollicardo explained “We are free and OK physically but we are psychologically DEVASTATED and want to return urgently to Italy”.

The authorities in Tripoli said that they were being taken care of by local security forces . However, this evening there were unconfirmed reports that the pair had been moved to Tripoli and were due to be flown out of Mitiga airport.

Details of the operation to free the men are not yet clear. Only 48 hours earlier two of their colleagues from the Italian Bonatti construction company, Fausto Piano and Salvatore Failla, who were seized with them last summer near Sabratha, died when local forces raided the building where they were imprisoned, said to be 20 kilometres south of Sabratha. A Syrian fighter, a woman and a young child were reported to have been captured but three other terrorist suspects managed to escape, though it has not been said how.

All four men were travelling from Tunisia to the Mellitah gas complex where their employer was working for Italian oil company Eni. They and their Libyan driver were seized when their vehicle was stopped by gunmen. The driver was later freed. Jamal Zubia, head for foreign press head in the Ghwell administration in Tripoli today said that it was believed that the driver had sold them to their kidnappers. He also said that a ransom of €12 million had been demanded. Other sources said that part of that money had been paid.

Sabratha security spokesman Sabri Kshada said that in the last week 46 of the town’s militiamen had been killed in fighting with terrorists. This included the ten men captured and beheaded after IS briefly overran the local security centre. The Tripoli administration is flying journalists by helicopter to Sabratha tomorrow.

KDF jets pound Shaboob base in Gedo
Kenyan fighter jets have on Friday bombed a position controlled by Al-Shabaab militants in neighbouring Somalia, reports said.

A resident told Radio Shabelle by phone that the KDF warplanes had targeted a big camp in Sidamo village, 50Km west of Bardere town in Gedo region. The Kenyan military airstrike inflicted heavy losses on the civilians, and destroyed livestock and wells in the rural area with the Al-Shabaab presence.

“The Kenyan warplanes fired five missiles on the area run by Al shabaab. Large number of livestock killed in the air-raid,” said a resident, speaking to Radio Shabelle via telephone.

Kenya regularly carries out airstrikes in the regions of southern Somali border regions.

Drone kills four suspected al-Qaeda militants in Yemen
A drone strike killed four suspected al Qaeda militants in a car in the southern Yemeni province of Shabwa on Friday, local officials and residents said.

The car burst into flames and plumes of black smoke were billowing above the main road where the drone struck, they said.

Al-Qaeda propaganda brochures were scattered over the ground by the road, local officials said.

During nine months of civil war and military intervention by a Saudi-led Gulf Arab coalition last March, the United States has kept up drone strikes against extremist groups in Yemen.

With near-daily air strikes, Gulf Arabs and the U.S. are trying to rout the Iran-backed Houthis and forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who now control areas close to the presidential palace, and restore the internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

In the chaos around the Houthis push south, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), an affiliate of the global Sunni Muslim militant organization, has expanded its foothold in a country which has a long and porous border with Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia sees the Shi’ite Houthis as a proxy for Iran, its main regional adversary.

Viewed by Western analysts as the most dangerous arm of al-Qaeda, AQAP claimed responsibility for the Jan. 25 attack in Paris on the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo. AQAP has suffered setbacks in recent months, losing its leader and several senior leaders in U.S. drone strikes, and is facing competition from the new Yemen branch of ISIS.

Haaretz: Hezbollah Has Become an Army in Every Respect
[ALMANAR.LB] Israeli military assessments concluded that the Lebanese party of Resistance - Hezbollah - has become an army in every respect, an article published on Zionist Haaretz daily reported on Friday.

The military analyst of the Hebrew daily, Amos Harel, addressed "Hezbollah army" in a lengthy report, in which he stated that the Zionist entity should activate during the next war with Leb an unprecedented force, i.e. bombing of civilian infrastructure in all regions of the country without exception, in order to reach a quick cessation of the war and to stop the mass of rockets Hezbollah will fire into every spot in the occupied territories.

"If a war breaks out... the government will apparently also consider an attack on civilian infrastructure of the Lebanese state in an attempt to bring about the quick cessation of the firing of missiles into the home front," he said.

Saudi Royalty Panicked by Axis of Resistance’s Victories in Entire Region
[ALMANAR.LB] Moving from confusion to recklessness before reaching disappointment...It is the void cycle that Saudi's Salman involved the "Charity Kingdom" in.

After receiving the first strike of the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, Saudi started to experience panic because of the historic steadfastness of the Syrian president Bashir al-Assad and allies.

The axis of resistance managed in Syria to strike the atonement scheme which was led and funded by the Saudi royalty.

After massacring the civilians in Leb, Syria, Iraq and Yemen, Saudi's rashness reached the extent of blacklisting Hezbollah as a terrorist group.

Many of Saudi allies were embarrassed and obliged to take into account the commands of the "Charity Kingdom," while others could not tolerate KSA's decision. As the decision which labeled Hezbollah as a terrorist group was taken, a storm of condemnations erupted in all the Arab countries to reject the Saudi escalation against the Resistance
That'd be the Hezbullies, natch...
In addition to Iraq and Leb, Algeria abstained from supporting the decision. Moreover, wide public and political denouncements were launched in Tunisia whose president rejected to support the Saudi resolution.

The latest reports assert that Saudi will keep on escalating its stances against Hezbollah in order to match the Zionist attempts to strike the Resistance in Leb and Paleostine.

Hamas Fighter Buried after New Gaza Tunnel Collapse
[An Nahar] The military wing of the Paleostinian Islamist movement Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, on Friday buried one of its men killed in the collapse of a Gazoo tunnel, the latest in a string of such incidents.

Ezzedine al-Qassam said its fighter Mohammed al-Astal "was martyred while working in one of the tunnels of the resistance", referring to an underground network built for fighting Israel.

At the funeral in his southern Gazoo hometown of Khan Yunis, Astal's body was escorted to the grave by a crowd of mourners, many of them armed.

His death brought to 12 the number of Gazooks killed in five separate tunnel collapses since January 26, as growing Israeli concerns grow over the reconstruction of "attack tunnels".

Ten of the dead have been members of Ezzedine al-Qassam.

Some Paleostinians blame the cave-ins on winter flooding, while others point the finger at neighboring Egypt which has launched an offensive against tunnels into its territory.

Israel’s military chief of staff, Gadi Eisenkot, has said that krazed killer tunnels in Gazoo are now the army's main priority.

In repeated conflicts with Israel, Hamas forces have used the tunnels to avoid or carry out attacks, store weapons and at times to enter Israel and capture soldiers.

Paleostinian turbans in Gazoo have fought three wars with Israel since 2008.

NPA role suspected in killing of ex-police chief in Mindanao
[Inquirer] Police authorities have started looking into the possible involvement of Maoist militants in Wednesday's killing of the former chief of police of Maragusan.

Chief Insp. Andrea dela Cerna on Thursday said that the police have not discounted the involvement of New People's Army insurgents especially in the wake of reports the militants had set loose hit men to target security forces in the region.

Dela Cerna said prior to the murder of former Chief Insp. Jer Igtanloc Jr., the victim had already reported an NPA plot after another retired police officer was killed in Maragusan. She said, "But he (Igtanloc) did not say if he was included on the supposed NPA hit list."

Igtanloc had just dropped off his daughter off at school here and was on his way home when gunned down. Investigators say the gunmen tailed the victim on motorcycle. A gunman fired several times at the victim who fell to the pavement. Dela Cerna said, "The assailants even drove closer to the fallen police official and fired at him again several times before speeding away."

ISIS sends bombers against Kurd positions in Mosul
DUHOK – The Islamic State (ISIS) extremist group launched on Friday a series of suicide bombings on positions for the Kurdish Peshmerga near the city of Mosul in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province.

Scores of the Peshmerga soldiers were reportedly injured in the attacks.

“Daesh (ISIS) terrorists carried out four suicide attacks near the Peshmerga headquarters in the Aski sub-district near Mosul,” Peshmerga spokesman Jabbar Derwalli told ARA News, adding that five Kurdish soldiers were injured in the attacks.

“The radical group tries to compensate its recent losses in Nineveh and other areas in northern Iraq by conducting such suicide attacks,” Derwalli said.

The official pointed out that the Peshmerga has installed new checkpoints in the vicinity of Aski and other liberated areas near the border with the Kurdistan Region “to monitor any suspected movements by the terrorists in order to prevent them from reaching their targets”.

This comes just two days after similar bombings by ISIS hit a Peshmerga headquarter near Makhmur and killed several Kurdish soldiers.

Speaking to ARA News, Brigadier General Talat Saleh Zarari of the Kurdish Peshmerga army said earlier on Thursday that their recent gains in Nineveh province “reflect the gradual collapse of ISIS”.

“Under heavy blows by the Peshmerga, ISIS is getting weaker day by day. With the constant advance by our units and allied forces in northern Iraq, ISIS appears unable to resist for long,” he said.

Kurd kommies kill kops
A car bomb and rocket attack by Kurdish militants killed two police officers and wounded 35 people in the southeastern Turkish province of Mardin on Friday, security sources told Reuters.

The attack was carried out around 6 am by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants in the town of Nusaybin, near the Syrian border, they said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

A ceasefire between the PKK and the state collapsed last July and attacks on Turkey's security forces have since increased amid a surge in violence in the predominantly Kurdish southeast that has killed hundreds of people.

Violence has also increased elsewhere in Turkey. A suicide car bombing targeting military buses in Ankara killed 29 people last month. The government said that attack was carried out by a member of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia with help from the PKK.

Turkey has also become a target for Daesh militants, who are blamed for three suicide bombings - one last year in the town of Suruc near the Syrian border and another in the capital, Ankara, and one in Istanbul in January. Those attacks killed more than 140 people.

The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, launched a separatist armed rebellion against Turkey in 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly Kurds, have since been killed.

Europe
Pope Francis Refers To `Arab Invasion' as a Social Reality
[BLOOMBERG] Pope Francis referred to an "Arab invasion" during a speech to a French Christian group this week, adding that Europe has been enhanced by previous influxes of people.

The pontiff also noted that Europe has seen many invasions over the course of its history, according to excerpts of the comments posted on the website of the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano.

Europe has been facing huge waves of migrants colonists and asylum seekers, many of them from Syria and Iraq. While the seemingly endless streams of people have led to tension among the 28 nations of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, some politicians have said the newcomers should be seen as a new resource.

"Today we can talk about an Arab invasion," the Roman Catholic leader said in the comments dated Thursday. "It is a social fact."

L’Osservatore Romano reported the pope hastened to add Europe has always been able to "go forward and find itself enhanced by the exchange among cultures," after saying that Europe is the "only continent that can bring about a certain unity to the world."

The number of Syrians seeking asylum doubled to 362,800 last year and the number of Iraqis jumped to 121,500, the European Commission said Friday.

China-Japan-Koreas
S. Korea, US Open Missile Shield Talks
[ALMANAR.LB] South Korea and the United States were set to open talks Friday on the possible deployment -- vehemently opposed by China -- of an advanced US missile defense system to counter the growing threat from North Korea.

South Korea's defense ministry said initial discussions would focus on potential locations, as well as cost-sharing and a timeline for installation of the THAAD system.

The system fires anti-ballistic missiles into the sky to smash into enemy missiles either inside or outside the Earth's atmosphere during their final flight phase.
The interceptor missiles carry no warheads, instead relying on kinetic energy to destroy their targets.

Seoul and Washington announced their intention to begin formal talks on its deployment following Pyongyang's long-range rocket launch on February 7, which was widely regarded as a covert ballistic missile test.

The first official meeting has been on hold amid fierce opposition from China and Russia, with Beijing warning the deployment had the potential to "destroy" relations with Seoul.

China sees THAAD as a threat to the effectiveness of its own nuclear deterrent, arguing that it could be used to monitor Chinese missile launches as far inland as Xian in the northwest.

The defense ministry in Seoul stressed Friday that any deployment would be solely aimed at countering North Korea's "increasing nuclear and missile threats".

"North Korea has continued its nuclear tests and long-range missile provocations and defied South Korea and the international community's deterrence efforts," the ministry said.

UN Says At least 25 Died in South Sudan UN Camp Attack
[ALMANAR.LB] At least 25 people were massacred and 120 maimed when gunnies in army uniforms attacked then torched a UN camp that was sheltering civilians in South Sudan last month, the UN said Friday.

The updated toll comes two weeks after the two-day shootout inside the camp in the northeastern town of Malakal, with a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) detailing the failure of peacekeepers to protect the civilians sheltering at the base.

Over 47,000 people lived in the camp, after fleeing for safety from a civil war that broke out in December 2013. The UN has said the attack was a possible war crime.

Reports of troops in government army uniforms storming the camp and "firing on civilians" were "credible", OCHA said, contradicting initial UN claims that the fighting was between tribal "youths".

"About 3,700 families' shelters were destroyed or damaged during the fighting and fires, along with multiple humanitarian facilities, including clinics, water tankers, nutrition centres and schools," OCHA reported.

Residents say 46 people were killed in the February 17-18 attack, while the UN has now updated to 25 an earlier toll of 18.

Those killed include three aid workers, two of them South Sudanese health workers for medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF). One was murdered as he administered care, MSF said.

"Other people who tried to put out fires or help the maimed were deliberately targeted and shot," said MSF, which treated 46 people for bullet wounds.

Residents say some were burned to death in the deliberate fires that razed sections of the camp, where civilians lived in segregated ethnic plots to dampen tribal tensions.

"The 47,000 people living in the camp had already suffered through two years of violence and were forced to seek shelter amid inhumane, substandard conditions," MSF said. "As a result of this attack, many are now left with nothing."

Rebels, Ukrainians claim more ceasefire violations

Donetsk head of state Aleksandr Zakharchenko signed an agreement on Friday which will ban all live fire exercises by both sides in this nearly two year old civil war, according to Russian language news accounts.

Negotiators from the rebel, Ukrainian and Russian sides have been working on an agreement for a prisoner swap as well as the latest ban since last week, but so far only the live fire ban has been signed. The ban stops all live ammunition firing for practice within a 300 kilometer zone along the line of contact.

Despite this latest agreement by both sides, both side continue to fire on the other using artillery, 30mm autocannon and small arms fire.

According to data supplied by the Donetsk ministry of defense, Ukrainian forces violated the ceasefire Friday 190 times, with areas near northern western Donetsk city being the most active.

According to Donetsk ministry of defense spokesman Lt. Colonel Eduard Basurin, Ukrainian forces fired on rebel positions in Peski, Marinka, Zhovanke, Opytnoye, and Zamozhniy Pavlopole in Donetsk, and in Gorlovka further north.

Other settlements/villages fired on include Zaytsevo, Spartak, Staromykhailivka, Zhabichevo, Sosnovsky, Gagarin mine, Donetsk airport and Volvo Center and in Petrovsky district, specifically in the village of Trudovskoy, near Donetsk city.

Weapons used included 82mm and 120mm mortars, 30mm autocannon fire from BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, grenade launchers and 23/2mm antiaircraft guns.

According to a news report which appeared on censor.net.ua website, Ukrainian military officials say the rebels "grossly" violated the ceasefire on Thursday including the launching of 122mm rocket artillery at their positions near western Donetsk. A Ukrainian soldier was reported wounded in Peski from rebel gunfire.

A Ukrainian soldier was reportedly killed by a rebel sniper near Stanitsa-Luganksaya while on patrol near the river.

On Friday, another Ukrainian military official identified as Major Sergey Zhmurko said that rebel forces violated the ceasefire 57 times, with shooting concentrated in Marinka and Peski in western Donetsk city, and in Mayorsk, Troitskoye and Lugansk city in Lugansk.

#4  thanks Fred, Rantburg - i tried to post a couple of times but it wasnt working for some reason

it is landmark because it has not been tested before. Where do the religious have to draw the line and conform to secular law?

In the end that question, though a consideration, was not a deciding factor as HT are an unregistered political party and the meeting was a public meeting open to all, not a religious ceremony

It is also landmark as it established liability for Ismail al-Wahwah of HT Australia

They have evaded legal liability for anything because they are not registered as any type of organisation so their members can just claim they didn't know and are not responsible for the illegal activities of the group.

If anyone is interested they can read the judgement here

Baltic Dry Index continues recovery to 349, up 7
The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, continued its recovery on Friday driven by improved rates for panamaxes and smaller vessels.

The overall index, that gauges the cost of shipping resources including iron ore, cement, grain, coal and fertiliser, was up seven points or 2.05 percent, at 349 points.

The index, which touched an all-time low of 290 points on Feb. 10, has since registered gains in 16 successive sessions to rebound by over 20 percent.

Abdurrahman Sewehli’s Tripoli home rocketed
The Tripoli home of maverick Misratan politician Abdurrahman Sewehli was hit by a rocket today in a likely response from those who deplore his support for the Government of National Accord.

A visibily angry Sewehli called a press conference to condemn the rocketing as the work of terrorists. UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler said that the assault was an unacceptable act that could not be tolerated. He added that the attack on Sewehli was an attack on all supporters of the Libyan Political Accord.

At around noon, the RPG slammed into Sewehli’s house in the Ben Ashour district near the Swiss embassy. It caused no casualties and the assailants were not identified.

Sewehli, a member of both the House of Representatives and of the rump of the GNC, has recently been deeply critical of GNC president Abu Shamain. Last December, he accused the GNC leader of hypocrisy, narrow self-interest and political insanity in obstructing the Libyan Dialogue.

The GNC-appointed Tripoli administration of Khalifa Ghwell has warned that those backing the GNA would “face the consequences”.

Turkey Launches New Artillery Strikes on IS in Syria
[An Nahar] Turkish armed forces launched new artillery strikes on positions of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group in Syria, local media reported on Friday.

Turkish artillery fired shells from howitzers positioned in its border region against IS targets in the north of Syria's Aleppo province, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported reported.

A fragile ceasefire backed by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has taken effect in Syria, but the deal does not apply to territory held by the IS group and al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front.

This was the second time within a week that Turkey had shelled IS targets in Syria, after a period of over a month when there had been no reports of Turkish strikes against the Lion of Islam group.

Washington had urged Ankara to halt its fire on the PYD and its People's Protection Units (YPG) militia.

The issue of the Syrian Kurds had caused a rare rift between Ankara and Washington, which regards the YPG as the most effective fighting force on the ground against IS and wants Turkey to focus on the fight against jihadists.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrians Use Truce to Resume Friday Protests
[An Nahar] For the first time in years, hundreds of Syrians nationwide took advantage of a nearly week-long ceasefire on Friday to resume anti-government protests under the slogan "The Revolution Continues!"

Waving the three-starred tricolor flag that has become the uprising's emblem, demonstrators in opposition-held areas of Aleppo, Damascus, Daraa and Homs called for the downfall of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
's regime.

"You could say we've gone back to the beginning," said Hasaan Abu Nuh, an activist from the flashpoint rebel town of Talbisseh in central Homs province.

Syria's conflict first began in March 2011 with widespread protests against the regime.

Demonstrations were at their largest on Fridays, and activists early on began assigning themes to the weekly marches.

But by 2013, a fierce government crackdown and heavy shelling had stamped out most attempts to stage protests.

Abu Nuh said the last demonstration in Talbisseh was in June 2012. Since then, rocket attacks and air strikes made residents too afraid to gather in large numbers.

However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
a landmark ceasefire that came into effect early last Saturday has brought relative calm to opposition areas.

On the first Friday since the truce began, crowds across the country returned to the streets, waving banners reading "The Revolution Continues!"

"People are so, so happy. There was crying, there was joy, but there was also a lump in people's throats," Abu Nuh said.

"There were a lot of young guys that used to protest with us who weren't there today because they've been killed," he told AFP by phone.

In Syria's second city, Aleppo, hundreds of people erupted into the streets in the opposition-held eastern neighborhoods.

"With this truce, we have the opportunity to express why we came out to the streets in the first place, which is the downfall of the regime," said Abu Nadim, an activist in the city.

He said he also wanted to show the world that demonstrators in Aleppo and elsewhere are not "armed gangs, but a people demanding freedom and the downfall of the regime".

Abu Nadim is responsible for coming up with slogans and painting them on large, white banners.

AFP spoke to him while he painted "Long live Syria, may Assad fall!" ahead of a protest where nearly 100 people marched carrying similar signs.

Arabia
4 Catholic nuns, 12 others killed in Yemen retirement home
[DAWN] Gunmen in southern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
on Friday stormed a retirement home run by a charity established by Mother Teresa, killing 16 people, including four Catholic nuns, officials and witnesses said.

The killing spree began with two gunnies who first surrounded the home for the elderly in Aden.

Meanwhile,
...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout Montefiore's foot was still stuck and the hound had completely soaked his uniform with slobber...
four others entered the building on the pretext they wanted to visit their mothers at the facility, according to the charity, Yemeni security officials and witnesses.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The gunnies then moved from room to room, handcuffing the victims before shooting them in the head. A nun who survived and was rescued by locals said that she hid inside a fridge in a storeroom after hearing a Yemeni guard shouting, "Run, run."

Khaled Haidar told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that he counted 16 bodies, including that of his brother, Radwan. All had been shot in the head and were handcuffed. He said that in addition to the four nuns, one Yemeni cook, and Yemeni guards were among those killed.

He said that his family was the first to arrive at the house and that he spoke to the surviving nun, who was crying and shaking. Haidar said that his family later handed her over to a group of southern fighters in charge of security in the local Aden district of Sheikh Osman.

Sunita Kumar, a spokeswoman for the Missionaries of Charity in the Indian city of Kolkata, said the members of the charity were "absolutely stunned" at the killing.

"The Sisters were to come back but they opted to stay on to serve people" in Yemen, she added.

India-Pakistan
Sartaj Aziz’s frankness
[DAWN] SARTAJ Aziz, adviser to the prime minister on foreign affairs, is no amateur or wide-eyed newcomer to foreign policy. So when Mr Aziz decides to speak frankly to a US think-tank audience about the leverage that the Pak state has over the Afghan Taliban, it is hoped that a great deal of thought went into the revelations.

To be sure, what Mr Aziz has claimed -- that sections of the Afghan Taliban leadership reside in Pakistain and that Pakistain has nudged those leaders to the negotiating table by threatening to restrict their movement, withholding access to medical facilities and clamping down on family life -- is neither surprising nor new.

Indeed, the leverage that Mr Aziz described is in line with what American officials in particular demanded that Pakistain use in early 2014, when the push for talks with the President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
-led Afghan government was first made. But the question remains: why now?

First, however, Mr Aziz’s candour ought to be welcomed. For years Pakistain has clung publicly to an unrealistic, untrue and untenable position -- that the Afghan Taliban leadership is predominantly based inside Afghanistan and that the Afghan government was shifting blame for its failures to limit the Taliban’s activities onto Pakistain.

Second, the full range of Mr Aziz’s words in Washington needs to be considered. The foreign adviser stressed that both in the past and in the present, Pakistain’s influence with the Taliban has its limits -- that, effectively, the Afghan Taliban do what is in their own interests and Pakistain cannot dictate policies to them.

Perhaps, then, Mr Aziz was trying to correct the historical record while simultaneously trying to impress on interlocutors -- in Afghanistan, the US and China -- the real-world limits of Pak influence with the Taliban.

That approach has a possible dual benefit: it prevents the Afghan government from automatically blaming Pakistain and puts the onus on Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
to make talks successful.

What remains to be seen is the extent to which the army-led security establishment here backs Mr Aziz in his risky approach. Silence in the coming days and weeks will be interpreted as an implicit endorsement of the foreign adviser’s stance. That would be welcome on two levels.

First, it would suggest that the military and civilian sides of the state are in fact able to work together. Second, it would indicate that the old culture of secrecy and denial in the ranks of the military leadership may be changing.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Air Raids Hit Syria Rebel Bastion despite Truce
[An Nahar] Warplanes struck a key rebel bastion east of the Syrian capital on Friday for the first time since a fragile truce began over the weekend, a monitor said.

"Two air strikes hit the edge of the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta and one person was killed," said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

He said the strikes were conducted by either Syrian or Russian planes. It was unclear whether the individual killed was a civilian or a fighter.

Friday marked the seventh day of the truce brokered by the United States and Russia.

Eastern Ghouta, the largest rebel bastion east of Damascus, was regularly and fiercely bombarded by government forces in the lead-up to the ceasefire.

On the day before the truce came into effect, 25 air raids targeted the opposition stronghold, 10 of which struck Douma.

But the suburb had seen relative calm since the ceasefire began.

The most powerful rebel group in Eastern Ghouta is Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
(Army of Islam) which is part of the High Negotiations Committee opposition grouping that agreed to the ceasefire.

The Observatory, which relies on a network of sources on the ground, says it determines whether strikes were carried out by Syrian, Russian or US-led coalition aircraft based on the location of the raids, flight patterns and the types of planes involved.

A local committee of activists wrote on Facebook that three raids, believed to be Russian, targeted the edges of Douma on Friday.

"There is also heavy artillery targeting the town," the Douma Coordination Committee wrote.

China-Japan-Koreas
Nuclear NKorea Is No Paper Tiger
[NEWSMAX] Twenty-four hours after the U.S. persuaded the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
to impose what is advertised by the B.O. regime as the toughest sanctions yet on North Korea, for its illegal nuclear and missile tests of Jan. 6 and Feb. 7, on March 3, dictator Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
responded by ordering his armed forces to be ready to use nuclear weapons "at any time" and to be prepared to make a "preemptive attack."

China's late dictator Mao Tse-tung once derided the United States as a "paper tiger," but was reminded by Soviet dictator Nikita Khrushchev "that paper tiger has nuclear teeth."

Western media that regularly dismisses as mere bluster Kim Jong-un's frequent threats to make nuclear missile strikes against the United States should remember -- and should report -- that the North Korean dictator is capable of delivering on his threats.

North Korea has six mobile intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), armed with nuclear warheads, capable of reaching the western United States, perhaps as far as reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
, according to "Military and Security Developments Involving the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea," a recent Defense Department report.

North Korea also has 50 medium-range Nodong missiles, at least some of them nuclear armed, that can reach South Korea, Japan, U.S. military bases located there, and the U.S. mainland if launched from a freighter.

Senior national security experts from the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations have warned repeatedly in articles and congressional testimony that North Korea's KSM-3 and KSM-4 satellites orbit over the United States at the optimum trajectory and altitude to evade U.S. early warning radars and national missile defenses and make a surprise electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack on the contiguous 48 United States.

There is some speculation that the initial 'tumbling' of KSM-4 was actually a staged kinetic dispersal action for a plume of EMP microsats (HPM pills). An interesting addition to this 'obviously paranoid rant' is the suggestion that the EMP has been team designed to target specific Made-in-China communication components.

#6  EMP again? Look, an EMP attacked is stupid tactics, it is localized (there's math involved), but still a strategic attack inviting a strategic response which likely would old fashioned thermo nuclear warheads targeted against silos and cities. We got no cell phones or radio, but you got no country and 1200 people in a mineshaft.

Southeast Asia
OIC warns Philippines over Daesh-inspired insurgents
[AFP] Amid words of caution by a major Islamic organization that the Philippines could risk its relations with the Muslim world, insurgents fighting in the name of Daesh are escalating attacks in the southern Philippines.

On February 28, Secretary-General Iyad Ameen Madani of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation met with Moro Islamic Liberation Front Chairman Alhaj Murad Ebrahim, to discuss what has become of the draft Bangsamoro Basic Law, the outcome of peace efforts between the government and the MILF, and other related concerns.

In a statement, the OIC said, "The Secretary General expressed his deep disappointment over the non-passage of the BBL which is a major step towards the final resolution of the Bangsamoro question. A failure of peace process could adversely affect the good relation existing between the Philippines and the Muslim world."

Since the peace bid was stalled in Congress before the election break, gunmen who have pledged allegiance to Daesh have instigated a series of deadly clashes with the army. An assassination attempt this week on a visiting Saudi Arabian cleric who was on a Daesh hit list has further raised fears, although police said they had yet determined the gunman's motives.

The MILF has pledged to honor a ceasefire while it waits for Aquino's successor to be elected soon. But hardline militants opposed to compromise have begun to take advantage of the vacuum.

In the most spectacular attack, a previously obscure group discounted by the military as a small-time extortion racket launched an assault on a remote army outpost on Mindanao. That attack sparked a week of fighting that left six soldiers and at least 12 militants dead, and forced more than 30,000 people to flee their homes. The gunmen flew Daesh flags during the fighting, and bandanas with the group's insignia were found when soldiers overran their base.

At the same time about 60 miles away, troops were battling a better known group that had previously declared allegiance to Daesh, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters. That fighting, which began about a week after Congress missed another deadline to pass the autonomy legislation, has claimed the life of one soldier.

The clashes continue. Video footage on Tuesday showed rockets being fired from an army helicopter, as well as troops in a cornfield firing mortars and carrying a injured solider on an improvised stretcher.

Tunisia: Hezbollah Liberated Lebanese Territories, Supported Palestine
[ALMANAR.LB] Tunisian Foreign Ministry clarified on Friday that the closing statement of the meeting of the Arab Interior Ministry did not include blacklisting Hezbollah as a terrorist group.

In a statement, the Tunisia Foreign Ministry reiterated that Tunis rejects to interfere in the domestic issues of the other countries, noting that Hezbollah has contributed to liberating the Lebanese territories, supported Paleostine's cause and fought ISIL.

"Tunisia attempted to take into account the Arab consensus during the meeting of the Arab Interior Ministers through approving the decision that is not compulsory."

This Week in Guns, March 5th, 2016

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

By the time the 2nd anniversary of the Bundy Ranch standoff comes around, many, if not all the armed participants will be in jail or indicted. The government has used social media to identify protesters, including the man who was photographed in the prone position, aiming his rifle from a highway overpass presumably at federal contractors. This is an inauspicious end to an effort to stop the government from violating property and civil rights using armed protests.

Patriot blogs I have read indicate that many of those who supported the standoff now believe the wrong tactics were used. Some of the remedies suggested include staying off Facebook and reorganizing how patriots and militia groups deal with government actions.

Make no mistake, despite all the self examination about how the protests and standoff were organized, and despite all the problems in both Nevada and Oregon, the government will brook no opposition to its policies and practices, and will regard interference from armed protesters as just another criminal act, one the response of which will include hard, armed military style kinetic action against its very citizens.

It seems that the only kind of protests to be allowed are those government approved issues. Global warming. More money for the poor. Or raciss kops gunning down black men. But protesting for your property or civil rights will bring the raw power of the government against you.

Anything else means you will be dealing with stories in which the local constabulary and the press have vapors because ammunition was discovered in a residence.

Two of the miscreants who took the initiative to rob a gun store in Houston earlier in the week are already in custody.

Loads.

Russia Voices ’Deep Concern’ over N. Korea’s Nuclear Rhetoric
[ALMANAR.LB] Russia on Friday voiced "deep concern" and urged restraint after North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un ordered that his country's nuclear arsenal be readied for pre-emptive use at any time.

"We are following the development of the situation very closely and hope that all the countries in the region and third countries will maintain restraint and equanimity in this difficult situation," Kremlin front man Dmitry Peskov said.

Bellicose rhetoric is almost routine for North Korea at times of elevated tensions but Peskov told news hounds in Moscow that Kim's latest declaration "caused deep concern" for Russia.

Kim ordered the North's nuclear warheads deployed "on standby" in a widely-expected uptick in military sabre-rattling from Pyongyang following the UN Security Council's adoption of tough new sanctions.

While the North is known to have a small stockpile of nuclear warheads, experts are divided about its ability to mount them on a working missile delivery system.

The EU on Friday imposed additional punitive measures against North Korea over its recent nuclear and ballistic missile tests carried out in defiance of United Nations

resolutions.

Europe's move came two days after the UN Security Council on Wednesday adopted its toughest sanctions yet against Pyongyang, imposing unprecedented inspections of all cargo to and from the notoriously reclusive country which has locked itself away from the rest of the world for the past 60 years.

Hours after the United Nations adopted the tougher sanctions, North Korea fired six short-range projectiles into the sea in a new show of defiance.

Russia -- which enjoys friendly ties with the reclusive Stalinist regime -- backed the tough UN measures against North Korea on Wednesday, after arduous negotiations between the United States and Pyongyang's main backer China.

Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
told members of the security council that the North Korea situation was "extremely tense".
