Whistleblower in ‘Zero Dark Thirty' case gets bucks and Civilian award
[McClatchy Report] WASHINGTON, A senior intelligence official has settled with the federal government after he alleged that he was punished for disclosing that the Pentagon's watchdog had shielded former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta from allegations that he'd leaked sensitive information.

Daniel Meyer, who previously oversaw the Defense Department's decisions on whistleblower cases, also accused the Pentagon inspector general's office of targeting him for being gay.

As part of the agreement, the Pentagon inspector general's office said it would give Meyer an undisclosed monetary settlement, according to three people with knowledge of the negotiations. They asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The inspector general's office also promised to give Meyer two awards in "recognition for his services," a Sept. 19 settlement document obtained by McClatchy says.

Meyer, who is now the top official overseeing whistleblower retaliation complaints for the intelligence community, agreed to drop the complaint he’d filed with an administrative panel that handles grievances by federal employees.

Meyer had accused his former Defense Department bosses of "manipulation of a final report to curry favor" with Panetta.

IG Report: Obama Operatives Impeded FOIA Requests, Punished Judicial Watch
[PJ] A General Services Administration inspector general released a scathing letter Thursday accusing White House operatives of slow-walking open records requests and wrongly punishing conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch. Meanwhile, the watchdog group revealed on Thursday that the FBI had no plans to question Clinton's aides in its "half-baked" email investigation until it was clear that Judicial Watch was going to, and then the FBI used JW's own redacted FOIA documents to question them.

Via the Washington Times:

The GSA botched several high-profile open records requests, delaying them for months while political appointees got involved, Inspector General Carol F. Ochoa said. The findings were released while the administration was facing charges of slow-walking open records requests for Hillary Clinton’s emails, as well as other requests.
In the case of Judicial Watch, the order to strip it of media status came from political operatives with long ties to Democratic causes -- and even from the White House.

The inspector general said the decision

MN Housing Board taxpayers to Pay Monthly Rent for Migrants Traveling Back to East Africa
[GP] The Minneapolis Housing Authority passed legislation this week that will allow migrants to skip their monthly rent in Minnesota when they travel back home to East Africa.

The move was sought by local East African immigrants. Immigrants traveling for 30 to 90 days could apply for a hardship which will reduce their rent to $75 a month while they are gone.

Public housing residents in Minneapolis will no longer need to pay their normal monthly rent when travel abroad erases their income, a change particularly sought by East African immigrants. The board of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority approved this week reverting to its previous policy of collecting only minimal rent during extended absences. The change takes effect once approved by federal housing officials, which is expected by year’s end.

Abdi Warsame, a City Council member, told the board that the policy in place for the past five years works a particular hardship on elderly East Africans who must save for long periods if they want to visit their homelands.
I'd also have to save for a long period if I wanted to do extended overseas travel...
He said that many receive federal Supplemental Security Income, which is halted when the recipient is outside the United States.
Which is current Federal law. If you're flush enough to travel overseas you likely don't need SSI. Then again, someone is going to have to explain why a foreign national is getting SSI in the first place...
Yet the policy required people to keep paying rent, which is income-based. Travelers gone for 30 to 90 days could apply for a hardship, which meant that they paid the minimum $75 monthly rent during their absence, but were required to make up the difference between that and their normal rent over the next year or two.

Donald Trump Suggests Hillary Clinton Received FBI 'Immunity' Over Emails (Video)
[ABC] Almost three months after the FBI declined to recommend charges be brought against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email account while serving as secretary of state, Donald Trump on Thursday suggested that the Democratic candidate for president "probably" received "immunity" in the case.

Trump provided no specific evidence for his assertion, and ABC News has found no information to corroborate it.

Trump leveled the claim at a campaign rally in New Hampshire while referring to testimony given Wednesday by FBI Director James Comey to the House Judiciary Committee about the bureau's investigation of Clinton.

After first decrying the immunity deals given to some of Clinton’s associates, the Republican nominee turned to Clinton herself.

"They probably gave her immunity, too," Trump said. "Do you think Hillary got-- yeah she got the immunity. She had something."

U.S. Slaps Chinese Firm With Sanctions - China butt hurt
[Daily Caller] The U.S. sanctioned and filed charges against a Chinese firm for doing illegal business with North Korea, and China is not pleased, according to Reuters.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned China’s Dandong Hongxiang Industrial Development Company Ltd. (DHID) Monday. Criminal charges were brought against four executives, namely, Ma Xiaohong, Zhou Jianshu, Hong Jinhua, and Luo Chuanxu, for contributing to North Korean proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

DHID is being charged with collaborating with Korea Kwangson Banking Corporation (KKBC), which is under U.S. and U.N. sanctions for providing financial services for North Korean WMD programs.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday that it firmly opposes countries that try to "exercise ’long-arm jurisdiction’ by enforcing its domestic laws over China’s enterprises and individuals."

Clinton proposes 5 million-member ‘national service reserve' project
[Wash Times] Pledging to make public service a hallmark of her would-be administration, Democrat Hillary Clinton proposed Friday a 5 million-member "national service reserve" project that would train Americans to respond to natural disasters, health emergencies and other crises.

The program, Mrs. Clinton said, would allow citizens to continue working in their full-time jobs but essentially would put them on call if state or local governments need more bodies.

"If you join the national service reserve, you will receive some basic training, just like you would in the military reserves. And then when your city or state needs you, you’ll get the call," Mrs. Clinton said at a rally in Florida. "Say a natural disaster strikes and the Red Cross needs all hands on deck,
...legitimate...
or maybe like the water crisis in Flint [Michigan], and clean water has to be distributed every day to a lot of families.
...covering for government malfeasance...
Or maybe your city launches a major public health campaign to reduce drug abuse or promote mental health.
...utterly ridiculous. These are matters for health ministry ad campaigns, not dragging people away from their paying jobs to march up and down in sandwich boards, handing out flyers -- for free. In any other contest she would be laughed off the stage for saying this aloud.
You will then be sent into action."
Sounds rather like a recent government plan. In Venezuela. We can all see how well that country works...
Mrs. Clinton did not talk about how much it would cost to establish and run such a program, nor did she say where the money would come from.
No, she's always a little light on those sorts of details...
She said her goal would be to have 5 million members spread across all 50 states.

'Burrowing In' - 8 Agencies Converted 17 Political Appointees To Career Positions w/o Approval
[Daily Caller] Seventeen political Obama appointments across eight different agencies converted to career positions without receiving the required Office of Personnel Management (OPM) approval.

After President Obama leaves the White House on Jan. 20, 2017, over 4,000 of his political appointees also vacate their government offices as well. Federal employees prepare for new administrations by converting some of the outgoing White House’s political appointees to permanent career civil servants.

According to a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report released Friday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had the most unapproved political to career conversions with six, followed by Health and Human Services (HHS) with three, and the Department of Energy (DOE) with two.

All of these agencies made seven of these conversions in 2010, when OPM’s previous approval policy was first established, and made two conversions in 2015 (through October 1).

Dream Defenders: Defending the Dream of Anti-Israel Activism
[LI] We wrote recently how BDS is a settler-colonial ideology, in that it invades, conquers, and subjugates other movements to advance anti-Israel actIvism.

There are few instances where this is more apparent than Dream Defenders, one of the key groups in the Black Lives Matter movement.

Dream Defenders was initially formed to protest "Stand Your Ground" laws in Florida, in the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting.

Yet, following the pattern of many organizations who organize under the ideology of "intersectionality", Dream Defenders has transformed itself from an organization fighting for a change in the criminal laws of the state of Florida, into one which is identified with the bizarre attempt to link Black Lives Matter to the Palestinian cause. The struggle to protect young black men in Florida and elsewhere in the U.S. from allegedly unlawful police violence apparently also involves "liberating" Palestine, i.e. the destruction of the state of Israel and bizarre crushes on terrorist organizations like the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

How? Why? What is the connection? Everything's connected, say advocates of intersectionality.

[AlAhram] French police fired tear gas and water cannon at migrants colonists and protesters who gathered in defiance of a ban on Saturday outside the shanty town near Calais known as "the Jungle", local authorities said. About 200 migrants colonists and some 50 protesters assembled under a bridge to protest against living conditions in the nearby camp that President Francois Hollande

has vowed to close by the end of the year. Police clashed with migrants colonists as they pushed them back to the camp while activists threw stones at the security forces.

Another 150 protesters who left Gay Paree on Saturday aboard four coaches were blocked by police at a toll road about 30 miles (48 km) short of the northern port.

Thousands of migrants colonists fleeing war and poverty, from Afghanistan to Syria, have converged on Calais over the past two years. Many attempt to sneak onto trains using the Channel Tunnel or lorries heading to Britannia, where they hope to settle. The presence of the migrants colonists has led to tension with some residents and a permanent police deployment.

Local Muslims wary of Hungary’s anti-migrant referendum
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Moslems in Hungary say they are wary of the government’s anti-migrant referendum this weekend, which polls suggest has boosted xenophobic feelings.

The government, contending that there is a direct link between migrants colonists and terrorism, is seeking a popular mandate in Sunday’s vote for its opposition to accepting any mandatory European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
quotas for resettling asylum seekers.

"I’m starting to feel that my own homeland is repudiating me," says Timea Nagy, a Hungarian Moslem.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said Hungarians have "no problems" with the local Moslem community, but he believes any EU quotas to relocate asylum seekers, including many Moslems, would destroy Hungary’s Christian identity and culture.

Orban hopes that a rejection of EU quotas in the referendum will be mimicked by others and force Brussels to reconsider the scheme.

A poll taken in August by the Publicus Institute for the Vasarnapi Hirek newspaper found 35 percent of the 1,000 people asked said it was obligatory to help refugees, down from 64 percent in September 2015.

Some 5,600 Moslems live in Hungary, according to the 2011 census, the latest available.

On Friday, about 30 people took part in a "Moslems living among us" walking tour in a Budapest neighborhood, an effort to counter prejudice.

Human face
"In the past year, especially since the migrant crisis is causing tension in Hungarian society, this is one of our most popular walks," said tour guide Anna Lenard. "We present Hungarian Moslem communities and try to show their human face because people living here get a lot of false information from the media."

The tour in the city’s so-called "New Buda" neighborhood stretching to the Danube River includes stops in several shops and mosques, as well as presentations and chats by community leaders.

"We could say that this (referendum) campaign is against the migrants colonists but in reality it is covertly against Islam, that’s how people mostly understood it," said Tayseer Saleh, imam of the Darusallam Mosque.

"We do not support the migrants colonists coming to Europe," Saleh said. "We support putting an end to the problems there and I guarantee that 90 percent of the people will return to their homeland."

Government billboards and media ads have drawn a direct link between migration and terrorism, warned Hungarians that millions more migrants colonists may soon be headed for Europe and asserted that cases of harassment of women in Europe have risen greatly since the start of the migrant crisis.

Valuable asset
Speaking last September at a meeting of Hungarian diplomats, Orban said the Moslems in Hungary were a "valuable asset" and wanted to avoid causing "awkward situations, even at the verbal level" for them.

"We are truly glad that there are kebab shops on our avenues. We like buying lamb from Syrian butchers at Easter," Orban said. "We are going to honor this Moslem community in Hungary, but we don’t want their proportion to grow suddenly."

Local Moslems said the problems they faced in light of the government’s referendum campaign were far beyond awkward.

"I consider myself a good Hungarian and I want to be one, too," Timea Nagy said. "But if people are surrounded by this kind of propaganda and they are so impressionable, it often makes you wonder."

Why wouldn't anyone's homeland have a strident position against Islam?

#2  Actually, Timea, it's exactly the other way around. Right now, there are few of you and you behave civilly - no public resentment against you. If a lot of "refugees" gets in, they'll behave like they do everywhere. That would lead to resentment against all Muslims. And you wouldn't like how it ends.

French attack threat: 15-year-old student charged
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A 15-year-old high school student was charged and held Friday on suspicion of wanting to commit a terror attack directed by a notorious Syria-based French bad boy, a judicial source said.

The teenager was charged over criminal associations with a terrorist group, the source said.

The minor had been in contact using Telegram - the encrypted messaging app popular among French bully boyz - with Rachid Kassim,
...who has 317 followers on his account, so we should be hearing much more of the popular gentleman-jihadi...
a French jihadist based in the areas of Syria and Iraq held by the ISIS.

The adolescent, who was not previously known to intelligence services, was taken in for questioning early Wednesday from his parents house in Domont and held in police custody for 48 hours before appearing before the court Friday morning.

"There was a suspicion he was going to commit an act," said one source close to the investigation, adding that the minor had said while in jug that he had abandoned the plan.

In the last few weeks, around ten adolescents have been held as the authorities scramble to tamp down home-grown bad boy violence that is increasingly drawing in teens.

Kassim, a 29-year-old former social worker from the Loire valley who has appeared in several IS propaganda videos, is believed to have been a key influence on many of the youths.

The 15-year-old charged Friday was "very active on the Telegram messenger, where he liked two stations that broadcast bad boy propaganda", said a source close to the enquiry.

He was also in contact, using the encrypted messaging service, with another teenager - himself in touch with Kassim - who was tossed in the slammer

Islamic bandidos murderous Moslems have targeted La Belle France repeatedly in the last two years.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has said the terror threat was at a "maximum" and that the authorities were foiling attacks and smashing jihadist networks "every day".

Valls said that around 15,000 people were known to police in La Belle France as having been radicalised, up from a previous estimate of 10,000.

Erdogan Bey says 'Turkey in ‘endgame’ over EU membership
"Youse mooks gotta choose: ya gonna open the gates, or ya gonna make us flood ya with the rest of the world?"
[IsraelTimes] Turkish leader: It is time for Brussels to decide once and for all whether it wants us as part of the union or not

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
on Saturday warned that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
had reached the "end of the game" over its decades-long EU membership bid, saying it was time for Brussels once and for all to make clear if it wanted Ankara as a member.

In a hard-hitting speech marking the opening session of parliament, Erdogan also told Brussels it needed to allow Turks visa-free travel to the bloc by October, as per a previous agreement to decrease migrant flows.

Relations between the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and Turkey have strained in the wake of the July 15 failed coup, with EU officials among the most vocal critics of the relentless crackdown against the alleged plotters and supporters

"If the EU is going to make Turkey a full member, we are ready. But they should know that we have come to the end of the game," Erdogan said in a televised speech in Ankara.

"There is no need to beat around the bush or engage in diplomatic acrobatics.

"It’s their (the EU’s) choice to continue the path with or without Turkey. They should not hold us responsible," he added.

Erdogan said that October would be an important month in Turkey’s relations with the European Union and that "it is necessary" that visa-free travel for Turks to the Schengen Area comes into force this month.

Under a March deal, Turks were to gain visa-free travel in exchange for Ankara helping reduce the flow of migrants colonists to Europe. However the visa plan has stumbled over Turkey’s anti-terror laws.

Turkey’s bid to join the EU dates back to the 1960s with formal talks starting in 2005. So far, only 16 chapters of the 35 chapter accession process have been opened for Turkey.

"The fact that our country has been kept waiting at the door for 53 years shows your (the EU’s) opinion towards us," Erdogan added.

After the attempted coup, Erdogan mulled bringing back capital punishment, a move which would spell an end to the bid. But he did not mention the issue in the speech to parliament.

Erdogan Stirs Trouble over 1923 Turkey Border Treaty

[AnNahar] President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stirred up controversy over the treaty that almost a century ago set the borders of modern Turkey, alarming both neighbouring Greece and secular opposition at home. In a speech Thursday, Erdogan for the first time rejected the notion that the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne was a "victory" for Turkey and wistfully lamented the loss of Aegean islands which are now Greek territory.

The treaty -- the founding basis of the modern Turkish state out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire -- has usually been seen inside the country as a triumph of its secular leadership led by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. For the secular opposition in Turkey, Erdogan's comments have represented another dangerous lapse into neo-Ottomanism, signalling his regret that Ankara does not control territory stretching from Balkans to Africa as Constantinople did in Ottoman times. But for pro-Erdogan commentators his remarks were a timely reminder that modern Turkey has just a fraction of the territory controlled by the Ottoman Empire.

- 'Is this a victory?' -
"You see the Aegean, don't you?" Erdogan told local officials in the speech at his presidential palace.

"In Lausanne, we gave away islands (so near that) your voice can be heard if you shout across to them. Is this a victory?" he asked. "They were ours. There are our mosques, our shrines there."

Erdogan rounded on those who negotiated the treaty who included Ismet Inonu, Ataturk's right-hand-man who would later succeed him as president and still a hero for secularists.

"Those who sat at that table could not make the best of the agreement. Today we are suffering the consequences."

After the Ottoman defeat in World War I, the existence of any future Turkish state had been in question. However thanks to the strategic brilliance of Ataturk and victory in the War of Independence against Greece, modern Turkey was founded in 1923 as a state stretching from the Mediterranean to Persia. The military victory and Lausanne Treaty reversed the outcome of the 1919 Treaty of Sevres which, if implemented, would have seen modern Turkey reduced to a rump around Istanbul and Anatolia.

Under the new borders enshrined in Lausanne, all the Aegean islands went to Greece, with the exception of Gokceada (Imroz) and Bozcaada (Tenedos). Several islands however had already been captured from the Ottoman Empire in a 1912 war.

- 'Dangerous for relations' -
Athens, which has had generally solid relations with Ankara during Erdogan's rule, said the controversy would not do ties any good.

"Calling the Treaty of Lausanne into question ... is dangerous both to relations between our two countries and the wider region," Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said.

Junior foreign minister for European affairs Nikos Xydakis told SKAI TV "Erdogan's surprise outbursts" were becoming customary.

"He is facing great pressure inside," he said, pointing to the July 15 failed coup and the troubles in neighbouring Syria and Iraq.

Erdogan's comments were indeed surprising, given that on the 93rd anniversary of the treaty on July 24 he lauded the treaty as the "founding document of the Republic" and a "victory won with our glorious people's faith, courage and sacrifice".

Aykan Erdemir, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said Erdogan's "U-turn" marked a crumbling of unity with the secular opposition in the aftermath of the July 15 coup.

"Now that the Turkish president has reestablished full control over the country, he feels comfortable to go back to his anti-republican and polarising narrative," Erdemir told AFP.

Car Bomb Kills Two in Mogadishu
At least two people were killed and five injured Saturday when a car loaded with explosives blew up near a restaurant in Mogadishu, a security official and witnesses said.

The car was parked in front of the Blue Sky restaurant, near a busy road close to the headquarters of the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) in a southern district of the city.

The blast was detonated remotely outside the restaurant, security forces spokesman Mohamed Dahir told AFP, adding that “information we have gotten so far indicates that two civilians were killed in the blast”.

Sources said the restaurant is frequented both by security personnel and civilians.

“I saw two dead bodies and five wounded, most of them civilians who were passing by the area,” added eyewitness Abdukadir Shilow. “There is chaos around the restaurant and Somali forces sealed off the road after the blast.”

There was no immediate claim of responsibility although immediate suspicion fell on the Al-Qaeda linked extremist group Shabaab, locked in battle against the Somali government and which regularly mounts attacks in the city.

Despite being driven out of the capital in 2011 by an African Union force deployed in 2007 the group still control vast swathes of outlying rural areas from which they launch guerrilla operations.

Somalia is due to hold a delayed presidential on October 30 as the country targets a long-awaited return to stability.

42 suspects indicted in lynching case
[DAWN] LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Friday indicted 42 suspects involved in lynching of two Moslem men outside Youhannabad in retaliation for two suicide kabooms on churches.

Nishtar Town police produced the suspects before the court under strict security arrangements and the court framed charges on them. The suspects pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
and opted to contest their trial.

The court adjourned the trial hearing till Oct 7 and directed the prosecution to produce its witnesses. Previously, the court had indicted 20 other suspects on same charges.

In March, 2015, two suicide attacks were carried out on two churches inside Youhanabad, a Christian dominated locality on Ferozepur Road, Lahore.

The members of the Christian community resorted to violent protest and burnt two Moslem men to death suspecting them the attackers. The two victims were later identified as Babar Noman, a garment worker, and Hafiz Naeem, a glass cutter, of the same locality.

Arabia
Soddys continue air campaign in Taiz
[Asharq Al-Awsat] Taiz-The air campaign carried out by the Saudi-led Arab coalition continued zeroing in on coup militants located in Yemen’s Taiz.

Top Houthi commander Abu Nasr Alkhawlany along with eight of his companions had been reportedly killed by a recent coalition-staged raid on the coup’s pit in Alrawd village, located west of Taiz on Friday.

Arab coalition airstrikes mostly targeted reinforcement fighters and artillery warehouses belonging to Houthis and allied coup militias. Over ten militants were reportedly killed on Friday.

The operation in Taiz -Yemen’s third largest city- had cost grave losses among the ranks of the insurgency.

Howitzer ammunition, in addition to self-propelled anti-aircraft weapons found in Houthi depositories, were destroyed, eyewitnesses told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

Fighters supporting ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh, allied with Iran-backed Houthis, had reported grave losses as well.

The Arab intervention led by Saudi Arabia backs pro-legitimacy forces, chiefly composed from the national army and supporting popular movements, in a civil conflict which pits Iran-backed Houthi militias staging a coup against the nationally elected government.

Rural areas in Hayfan and As Silw, both districts of Taiz, witnessed continued fighting between pro-legitimacy forces and anti-government combatants.

The Yemeni army and Popular Resistance Forces launched on Friday a major offensive against Houthi and Saleh sites in Taiz, southwest of the country.

The national army and popular resistance made advances on several fronts, and have been achieving great success, Yemeni security sources said.

Yemeni pro-government forces resumed military campaigns in coordination with the Arab coalition forces.

Political and economic war against Houthi-spurred chaos continues as Yemen’s President Abd-Rabbuh Mansour Hadi sacked the head of the central bank and ordered that it be relocated to the southern city of Aden.

The move would ramp up pressure on Houthi rebels who had been reportedly squandering the national bank’s assets on war and armament.

Yemen’s limited oil revenues flow to the central bank. Hadi’s ordered relocation would therefore deprive the Houthis of a potential source for cash.

Hadi had been carrying out institutional reform and measures since his return to the nation’s temporary capital, Aden, from exile in Saudi Arabia–Houthi fighters had overrun Yemen’s primary capital, Sana’a.

Alternatively, authorities reported the death of a Saudi border guard by a Houthi-fired shell from Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki, in a statement, said that the attack took place on Thursday.

The shell landed in Saudi Arabia’s Jazan province, which borders Yemen. Cross-border fire has targeted Saudi security agents and civilians since the launch of the Arab intervention to salvage Yemen.

Syrian regime forces report attacks against Islamist groups in different parts, claim many killed
[RUDAW.NET] The Syrian army and air force launched attacks against Islamist groups in Deir Ezzor, Daraa and Hama on Saturday, killing "tens of terrorists," wounding many and wiping out Islamic State

In Deir Ezzor, "an army unit carried out on Saturday an operation against ISIS terrorists’ gatherings and fortifications in Um Abboud hill, establishing complete control over it after killing dozens of the terrorists," state-run SANA said. The offensive eliminated "the last gathering of ISIS bully boyz there," the report claimed.

The agency also reported festivities with ISIS in two Deir Ezzor neighborhoods in which regime forces inflicted "heavy losses upon the terrorists."

"Later, army artillery shells were fired on a gathering of vehicles for ISIS bully boyz in the farms near the Panorama area on the southwestern outskirts of Deir Ezzor city. Five vehicles equipped with machine guns were destroyed and a number of bad boyz were potted as a result of the operation," SANA said.

In the southern and eastern countryside of Idlib province, the air force targeted the Jaish al-Fateh Islamist group, "killing a number of its members," SANA said, citing an unidentified source.

In the city of Daraa in the south, an army unit targeted the Jabhat al-Nusra

"A gathering of ISIS bully boyz was also targeted in al-Qasr village, 40 km east of Sweida city, where many of them were killed or injured," according to SANA.

2 Men Who Found Bomb in Chelsea Are Identified as Airline Security Guards
[NYTIMES] Two men who found a travel bag containing a bomb on a Manhattan street last month -- and then walked off with the bag but left the bomb -- were not just employees of EgyptAir but in-flight security officers for the carrier, two officials at the airline said on Friday.

Surveillance footage showed two men finding the bag on West 27th Street on the evening of Sept. 17, soon after a bomb went kaboom! on West 23rd Street, injuring 31 people and triggering terrorism fears across the region.

In the video, the men were seen pulling from the travel bag a white plastic bag that contained a pressure cooker connected to wires and a mobile phone. They left the white bag on the sidewalk and walked away with the travel bag. The bomb did not explode, and Sherlocks have said that the men may have inadvertently disabled the device.

The two men, identified as Hassan Ali and Abou Bakr Radwan, had flown to New York from here, serving as unarmed security guards on the flight, the officials said.

The bag they found contained one of several homemade bombs that prosecutors say were planted that day in New York and New Jersey by Ahmad Khan Rahami, an Afghan-born American citizen.

American Sherlocks released footage of the two men, appealing for help in identifying them.

The EgyptAir officials who identified them as Mr. Ali and Mr. Radwan spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. The officials said they believed that the two employees were not connected to Mr. Rahami or the bomb plot.

"They didn’t know what was in it," one of the officials said of the travel bag. Mr. Ali "told me he saw it and thought it was nice," the official recalled. "He opened the bag to check it out and found a pot."

Mr. Ali did not want to go to the trouble of flying the pot back to Cairo, the official said, so he put it aside and left with the travel bag.

"You know, we see things left on the street in New York all the time," the official said. "Stuff no one wants. It’s normal to take them."

Barrel bombs hit largest hospital in rebel-held Aleppo
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] At least two barrel bombs hit the largest hospital in the rebel-held side of Syria’s Aleppo city on Saturday, the medical organization that supports it said.

The facility, known as M10, had already been hit by heavy bombardment on Wednesday along with the second-largest hospital in the area in what UN chief the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon denounced as "war crimes."

"Two barrel bombs hit the M10 hospital and there were reports of a cluster bomb as well," Adham Sahloul of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) said of Saturday’s attack.

Both facilities were put out of service by Wednesday’s bombardment, leaving only six operational hospitals in the eastern parts of the city, according to SAMS.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group, said air strikes also hit a smaller field hospital in the Sakhur neighborhood on Saturday.

"One person was killed and the field hospital is out of service," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman.

He was not able to immediately confirm if the victim was a patient at the facility or a member of staff.

The recent bombardment of Aleppo has been some of the worst in Syria’s five-year civil war, leaving more than 220 people dead and turning residential buildings into heaps of rubble.

The World Health Organization has called Syria the most dangerous place in the world for health workers.

According to academic sources, the president of the university recently issued a decision to establish the department immediately and to begin to accept students.

The course is reportedly expected to begin later this month, in which a declaration ceremony is expected to take place with the attendance of an official from the Iranian embassy in Sanaa.

The Farsi language department will be replacing the Turkish language department, which had reportedly been stopped by the Houthis last year for political reasons.

Teaching staff will include Houthis who received higher education in Iran, as well as the cultural attaché from the Iranian embassy in Sanaa.

Policeman killed, another wounded in car ambush as held ‘hitmen’ flee
[DAWN] Two suspected killers of a police official were freed from police custody in a mysterious gun attack that left one policeman dead and another critically maimed while an investigating officer of the case, who claimed his weapon had been ’missing’ since Friday morning, remained unhurt in the firing.

The three coppers were taking the two suspected killers back to the Korangi cop shoppe in a private car of the investigating officer after a hearing of the police official’s murder case at the anti-terrorism court when the firing was carried out along the Malir river at around 5pm, officials said.

The police authorities initially relied on the statement of station investigating officer (SIO) Abdul Wasay, who remained unhurt in the incident, but they found enough evidence to call the entire episode ’mysterious’. An examination of the four spent bullet casings found at the scene of the crime showed that the SIO’s official pistol was used in the firing. It also emerged that the firing was carried out from inside the car as no evidence was available to corroborate the SIO’s statement that the firing was carried out by armed motorcyclists.

Hospitals to get heads by Nov 7
Gonna have a first-class transplant program.
I have to say, I read that headline, much, much differently...
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Friday rejected Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf’s request for two months to streamline issues in the public sector hospitals of the federal capital and directed the government to appoint their permanent heads by Nov 7.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali, was hearing a case regarding the situation of facilities in the hospitals.

During the hearing, Justice Ameer Hani Muslim observed that patients were dying at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) and Polyclinic but the government still needed two months to streamline the affairs. He regretted that the court had to intervene in the appointment of the executive directors and administers of the hospitals.

“The court knows what is happening at Pims. One doctor is looking after eight offices. Pims hospital and the university should be separated,” he said.

Chief Justice Jamali said it was not possible to give two months for the appointment of the heads of hospitals. He ordered the appointment of the heads by November 7.

Nicholas Rasmussen, who directs the National Counterterrorism Center, said the Islamic State may be losing ground in Iraq and Syria but its ability to strike abroad, including in the U.S., "has not thus far been significantly diminished."

The nation is facing a phase in which people quickly radicalize and launch simple but deadly attacks before authorities have time to detect them, he said.

His testimony to the Senate Homeland Security Committee conflicts with upbeat reports from the White House, which has focused on territorial losses in Syria and Iraq as signs that the Islamic State is being defeated.

"Even ISIL's leaders know they're going to keep losing," President Obama said in August. "In their message to followers, they're increasingly acknowledging that they may lose Mosul and Raqqa, and ISIL is right ... they will lose them. And we'll keep hitting them and pushing them back and driving them out until they do."

First, they refuse to detect them, that would be racist. Second, even if identified, they will only act after the event. SOP

Iraqi reinforcements pour into Ninevah
(IraqiNews.com) Nineveh – Al-Hashd al-Shaabi Command revealed on Saturday that extra US soldiers, in addition to Apache and Chinook aircraft arrived at Ayn al-Asad base, west of Anbar, in preparation for the liberation battle of Mosul.

The Intelligence Director of al-Somoud brigade, Captain Nazim al-Jaghifi, said in a press statement, “This morning, extra US military troops arrived at Ayn al-Asad base in Baghdadi vicinity, along with a drone that will be used for reconnaissance and bombing.”

“The air base also witnessed the opening of a runway for the drone, as well as receiving additional Apache and Chinook aircraft, in preparation for Mosul offensive in the coming few days.” Jaghifi explained.

Pakistani, Indian troops exchange fire across Line of Control
[DAWN] Pak and Indian troops exchanged fire across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Bhimber sector early Saturday, an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said.

"Pak troops befittingly responded to Indian unprovoked firing which started at 0400 and continued till 0800 at LoC in Bhimber sector," said the ISPR.

The ISPR did not say whether there were any casualties on either sides.

In 2003, Pakistain and India reached a landmark agreement to maintain ceasefire along the LoC. However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
many violations have occurred since.

Sound byte: ’Nothing new about LoC violations’

The fresh exchange of fire comes two days after India claimed to have carried out surgical strikes on "terror launch pads along the LoC" in Pakistain, raising the already heightened tensions between the two countries. The Pak military swiftly rubbished these claims, saying its two soldiers died in cross-border firing by Indian troops.

It later emerged that an Indian soldier was captured by the Pakistain army, while Indian soldiers were also killed in a "befitting response" by Pak troops.

More from The Nation
BHIMBAR: Today, Indian forces again resorted to unprovoked firing across the Line of Control (LoC) inside Pakistani territory.

ISPR said Pakistani troops befittingly responded to Indian unprovoked firing, which started at 4:00 AM and continued till 8:00 AM at LoC in Bhimber sector.

Two Pakistani soldiers were killed on Thursday when Indian forces resorted to unprovoked firing across the LoC.

The ISPR did not state whether there were any casualties on either sides.

This incident of cross-border firing comes as tensions boil between Pakistan and India over the Kashmir issue.

Turkey finalizes military training base in Somalia
Turkey has finished its first military base in Somalia and will help train the country’s army to fight the deadly al-Shabaab terror group, a senior Turkish source told Anadolu Agency on Oct. 1. A Turkish military attache speaking on condition of anonymity said the U.N.-backed base will be operational by the start of 2017.

About 200 Turkish officers will be deployed to the facility in Mogadishu -the Somali capital - to deliver the first stage of training to over 10,000 Somali National Army troops and others soldiers from across Africa, he confirmed.

Turkish military officials in Somalia also said Ankara will open a firm in Mogadishu to make Somali military uniforms.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Sept. 30, Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamed praised Turkey’s involvement in the Horn of Africa country: "Turkey’s prominent role in Somalia can be seen at all levels: humanitarian, infrastructure, health and investment.

“I am not exaggerating if I say that the historic visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Somalia in 2011 was a turning point in the evolution of security and stability in the country," he said.

"Turkey is a historical key partner for Somalia as Turkey stood with us at a time when we were ignored by the whole world,” he added. “Turkey drew the world's attention on Somalia and the Somali people respect and appreciate the Turkish government and the Turkish people as well."

This year Erdoğan visited Somalia for the third time in three years and opened Turkey’s biggest embassy in Africa.

Afghanistan
Tension Reported Between Hizb-e-Islami, Jamiat-e-Islami In Badakhshan
Supporters of Hizb-e-Islami on Friday allegedly attacked supporters of the Jamiat-e-Islami party in Argo district of Badakhshan, leaving two dead and nine wounded, said Maulavi Hamidullah Muslim, a member of Badakhshan's provincial council and supporter of Jamiat-e-Islami.
The Afghan Jamaat is distinct from the Pak version. It is mainly Tadjik, and was headed by the assassinated legitimate president of Afghanistan, Barnhanuddin Rabbani. It was "inspired" by the Pak Jamaat, but lost its backing in favor of Hekmatyar's Hezb-i-Islami. Masood, Ismail Khan, and Atta Muhammad Noor were all adherents of the Jamiat.
"A number of men related to Hizb-e-Islami on Friday attacked supporters of the Jamiat-e-Islami party and killed two people who were shopkeepers and wounded nine other supporters of Jamiat-e-Islami. Then Akbari's men with his brother attacked on our house and that open fire on us," Muslim said.

However, members of Hizb-e-Islami in the province said the attack was not carried out by their supporters.
"Wudn't us."
Saifullah Akbari, a member of Hizb-e-Islami and the commander of public policing order in Argo, rejected the claims and said there was no animosity between the two groups in the area and that police had killed the two civilians.

But he said Hamidullah Muslim, along with his son, Saifullah Muslim a member of parliament had caused problems for Argo residents.

"Jamiat-e-Islami and Hizb-e-Islami do not have problems in Badakhshan. Muslim gathered the people and spoke to them over a loud speaker and then attacked the police headquarters. Police reacted to their move and a few people were killed and wounded," Akbari said.

"The parties do not have any problems. The clashes happened between irresponsible armed men and the commander of public uprising. After a few hours of firing, police managed to control the situation," said Zahid Mosadiq, district governor of Argo.

"Parties do not have problems in Badakhshan, but a number of irresponsible persons used their names. The situation is under control and we are trying to arrest the perpetrators," said Ghulam Sakhi Ghafoori, chief of Badakhshan police.

Argo is the biggest and the most secure district of Badakhshan – where Taliban are not active.

However, military analysts believe that both parties should call their supporters to order.

US builds a $100 million African drone base to fight Boko Haram
[ENGADGET] The Department of Defense announced on Friday that it is investing $100 million in a drone base located in Agadez, in central Niger.
I think that $100 mil includes all the gratuities...
The base will serve as a central surveillance hub in the fight against both Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
and roaming hard boy groups linked to al Qaeda.

"At the request of, and in close coordination with, the Government of Niger, United States Africa Command is establishing a temporary, expeditionary cooperative security location in Agadez, Niger," a US Africa Command spokesperson told Rooters via email. "Agadez is an ideal, central location to enable ISR collection (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) to face the security threat across the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin region."

The US already has a military presence in both Agadez and the national capital, Niamey. With the establishment of this new drone base, which is located adjacent to an existing US airfield, those capital forces will likely transition to Agadez, centralizing America's ISR (Intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) efforts in the region. Any intel gathered by these drones will be shared among America's regional partners including Nigeria, Chad and Mali.

India looks at more ways to pressure Pakistan
Beyond last Thursday's raid by Indian special forces into Pakistan's side of divided Kashmir, New Delhi is considering new economic and diplomatic measures to bring pressure to bear on its neighbor, Indian officials said.

Some Indian officials said the military was not planning further attacks or a major military offensive against Pakistan. But they said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was debating whether to use New Delhi's rising economic and diplomatic weight to squeeze Pakistan, a country one-fifth its size and with an economy seven times smaller. According to one of them, India could try to dissuade international companies from conducting business in Pakistan.

Options under consideration include choking trade with Pakistan that takes place through third countries such as the United Arab Emirates, officials said, even though it is limited and in India's favor.

Official trade between India and Pakistan was a modest $2.6 billion in 2014, but informal trade is estimated to be closer to $5 billion, with jewelry, textiles and machinery exported from India through third-country ports such as Dubai. India's informal imports from Pakistan through the same channels consist of textiles, dry fruits, spices and cement.

New Delhi is also considering building dams on rivers running into Pakistan and intensifying diplomatic pressure, hoping that it can show other countries how militants based in Pakistan impact the rest of the world, the officials added.

The steps being considered signal a far more assertive posture by India under Modi's nationalist administration than the previous government, but it risks further escalating tensions between the countries.

One Indian security official described the new Indian approach as moving from a "defensive posture to defensive offense", under which India works on the vulnerabilities of Pakistan - its economy, internal security and international image as an unstable nation, home to militant Islamist groups.

LNA seizes vessel bound for Tobruk
Tripoli, 1 October 2016:

The Omar Mukhtar Operations Room, part of the Libyan National Army (LNA), says it intercepted a container ship, the Panama-flagged Viya, and forced it to dock at Tobruk for inspection. The operations room claimed that the vessel was heading to Turkey and suggested that it was carrying suspect cargo having first loaded at Khoms and Misrata.

In fact, the ship was found to contain nothing more dangerous than scrap iron – although this is reported to be one of a number of items whose export was banned by eastern military governor Major-General Abdul Razzaq Al-Nazhuri last month

For their part, the ship’s managers, Istanbul-based Akar Shipping, have told the Libya Herald that the ship was heading to Tobruk from Khoms in the first place to discharge some cargoes and load others, that it was not seized and that all that happened was customs officials in Tobruk made a routine inspection after it docked.

Shipping website marinetraffic.com confirmed that the Viya’s destination was Tobruk.

The LNA is known to be nervous about vessels arriving in eastern waters from the west of the country.

Professor threatens students who troll U-Mich LGBT pronoun rule
[RedAlertPolitics] Grant Strobl has become a viral internet legend in the last few days for his epic troll of the University of Michigan's new online pronoun system, which encourages students to select whatever gender pronoun they wish to be called. The university faculty and staff are required to comply and use whatever pronoun the student picks, and the pronouns would be distributed to classrooms.

Strobl -- a UM student, YAF Chapter Chair, and 2016 Red Alert Politics '30 Under 30′ winner -- selected the pronoun "His Majesty," proving the ridiculousness of the program.

We were among the first to report it. Fox News reported on it. Total Frat Move covered it too.

Now, a liberal UM professor is striking back.

Emily Jashinsky, spokeswoman for Young America's Foundation, reports:
Friday afternoon, a University of Michigan statistics professor threatened to "punish" anybody in her class who used the school's new pronoun designation tool to change their pronoun to "His Majesty" like YAF Chairman Grant Strobl did earlier this week.

According to student sources, the professor, identified as statistics lecturer Nadiya Fink, told her class they would be punished if they changed their pronoun to something "disrespectful" to students who are "different" than "us."
"Fink remarked, "People who do what that kid did will be punished.'

More from YAF here.

Three Chinese fishermen killed in S Korea coastguard clash
Three Chinese fishermen have died in a fire after their boat was boarded by the South Korean coastguard.

The incident began when a coastguard vessel identified the fishing boat in South Korean waters, and ordered it to stop for inspection.

A coastguard official said the men ignored the commands, and barricaded themselves inside the wheel-house while the boat continued to travel. Officers then fired "flashbang" or stun grenades into the space, after which a fire broke out. The men, who were suspected of illegal fishing, were caught in the blaze after the coastguard officers threw a "flashbang" or stun grenade into part of their boat where they were hiding.

It is believed they died of smoke inhalation, an official said, and an autopsy has been ordered.

Fourteen other fishermen survived and are being questioned by authorities.

Chinese authorities have requested a full investigation, and South Korea's coastguard has said one is already under way.

Fishing in South Korean waters by Chinese vessels is permitted with the proper authorisation, but illegal fishing has become a point of contention between the two countries in recent years.

Britain
Brexit begins: Theresa May takes axe to EU laws
Theresa May will on Sunday announce she will repeal the 1972 European Communities Act in a move that will formally begin the process of making Britain’s Parliament sovereign once again.

Addressing the Conservative Party Conference for the first time as leader, Mrs May will declare that her Government will begin work to end the legislation that gives European Union law supremacy in Britain. In its place, a new “Great Repeal Bill” will be introduced in Parliament as early as next year to put power for the nation’s laws back into the hands of MPs and peers.
Well not really: it moves all the current EU laws under the British code. Then the MPs will begin the process of deciding which laws they wish to keep.
The announcement is Mrs May’s first firm commitment on Brexit since becoming Prime Minister in July and marks a major step on the road to ending the country’s EU membership.

The Grand Turk
Turkey gags 20 radio & TV channels; jails record number of press workers
[DAWN] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has ordered closure of 20 television and radio stations, including one that airs children’s programmes, on charges they spread "terrorist propaganda", adding to fears that emergency rule is being used to stifle the media.

President Tayyip Erdogan has said he wants a three-month state of emergency, imposed after a failed coup attempt in July, to be prolonged past October so authorities can eradicate the threat posed by a religious movement blamed for the attempt, as well as Kurdish faceless myrmidons who have waged a 32-year insurgency.

The banned channels are owned or operated by Kurds or the Alevi religious minority, according to Hamza Aktan, news editor at IMC TV, a news broadcaster slated for closure. He cited a copy of the decision obtained by his channel, which was based on powers given the government in a decree issued in July.

"This has nothing to do with the coup. It is an effort to silence the last independent media covering the Kurdish issue and violations committed by the state," Aktan said.

IMC has aired reports looking at security forces’ conduct during 14 months of military operations against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that has killed thousands.

Among the 12 shuttered television channels are Govend TV, which plays folk music, and Zarok TV, which airs Kurdish-language children’s cartoons. The decision also shut 11 radio stations for harming national security, Aktan said.

"Turkey is targeting a wide swath of cultural and political expression by shuttering minority broadcasters," Robert Mahoney of the Committee to Protect Journalists said. "When the government sees even children’s programming as a threat to national security, it is clearly abusing its emergency powers."

RULE BY DECREE: An official at the Radio and Television Supreme Council, the state watchdog, confirmed 20 stations were being closed.

Erdogan argues the state of emergency is helping authorities swiftly root out supporters of the military uprising by bypassing parliament to enact laws and suspend rights.

Turkey blames US-based Moslem preacher Fethullah Gulen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
for criminal masterminding the coup in which 240 soldiers, police and non-combatants were killed trying to stop rogue troops who had commandeered fighter jets and tanks to bomb parliament and shoot protesters. Another 100 people behind the putsch were killed.

Some 100,000 state employees suspected of links with the Gulen movement have been purged, and 32,000 people are in jail for their alleged role in the coup. Gulen denies involvement.

Authorities have also targeted the media, arresting dozens of members of the press to make Turkey the world’s biggest jailer of journalists and shutting down scores of media outlets.

Aktan and other IMC staff continued airing segments on Friday while waiting for police to arrive at their offices. Other stations on the closure list were raided and sealed off on Thursday, newspapers and CPJ said.

IMC, founded in 2011, has faced other punitive measures. In February, its satellite feed was cut while prosecutors investigate if it supports the PKK.

Aktan denied any links between IMC and the holy warriors, citing the channel’s principles of objectivity.

Turkey Detains 15 University Staff in Latest Post-Coup Raids

[AnNahar] Turkish authorities on Saturday detained 15 staff from one of the country's oldest universities in the latest raids against suspects allegedly linked to the failed July 15 coup. Those detained were rounded up following arrest warrants for 23 staff at the Ege University based in the Aegean city of Izmir, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

Some are also accused of using a secret messaging system called Bylock which The Sick Man of Europe Turkey says was devised by the coup plotters to share secret messages.

Eight suspects remain on the lam. Some of those detained include professors, the Dogan news agency said. Ege University is the fourth largest in Turkey.

India evacuates border villages amid reprisal fears
RANBIR SINGH PORA - India evacuated thousands of people living near the border with Pakistan on Friday, a day after claiming it carried out strikes in Kashmir that have dramatically escalated tensions with Pakistan.

Authorities in parts of northern India said they were evacuating villages within 10 kilometres of the border.

In Held Kashmir, police said more than 1,500 had moved away from areas where there was a risk of cross-border shelling, as fears of military escalation mounted.

"Most women and children have fled the village and taken shelter here," said one woman at a sports hall in Jammu's Ranbir Singh Pora town. "Our men are staying back to take care of the cattle, but we are scared," said the woman, who gave her name as Bibi.

Images from the northern Indian state of Punjab showed people piling bedding and cooking equipment onto trailers and cramming into crowded buses as security forces stood guard.

Jaswant Kaur said people in his village of Chak Allah Baksh in Punjab had been told to leave their homes. "Of course it's not a nice feeling to leave your home, crops, cattle and everything else behind," the 55-year-old told AFP. "Living here means we are always on the edge. We are really distressed."

According to Reuters, India evacuated more than 10,000 villagers living near the border, and ordered security forces to upgrade surveillance along the frontier in Occupied Kashmir.

Hundreds of villages were being cleared along a 15 km (9 mile) strip in the lowland region of Jammu and further north on the Line of Control in the Himalayan mountains of Kashmir.

Modi's government has been struggling to contain protests on the streets of Kashmir, where more than 80 civilians have been killed and thousands wounded in the last 10 weeks after a young rebel leader was killed by Indian forces.

Pakistan said on Friday that PM Nawaz Sharif's special envoys had arrived in Beijing to brief China on the deteriorating situation in Indian-held Kashmir. China, a Pakistan ally, expressed its concern, Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday assured that all attempts will be made to secure the release of a soldier who inadvertently crossed over to Pakistan.

"All attempts are being made to secure his release," Rajnath told reporters in New Delhi after attending a meet to discuss internal security situation. The home minister also said that New Delhi will take up the matter with Islamabad for his early release.

Modi’s war
[DAWN] FRUSTRATED by Pakistain’s refusal to bow to Indian diktat, encouraged by its strategic partnership with the US, alarmed by the renewed revolt in India-held Jammu and Kashmire and humiliated by the killing of 18 Indian soldiers in Uri, Narendra Modi is on the path of war against Pakistain. He has vowed to "isolate" Pakistain, support Baloch separatists, dam Pakistain’s rivers and conduct "surgical strikes" against Pakistain. Pakistain must assess these threats objectively. Its response should be characterised by resolve, responsibility and reciprocity.

New Delhi’s confrontational course reflects the ideological nostrums of the BJP-RSS cohort and the presumption that America will endorse Indian intimidation of Pakistain. The US no doubt would welcome a degree of Indian pressure on Pakistain to promote its own objectives, especially Pak action against the Haqqani ’network’ operating in Afghanistan. To please India, it is also asking Pakistain to suppress pro-Kashmiri groups (LeT and JeM).

But Washington is not likely, at this time, to declare Pakistain a "state sponsor of terrorism". The resolution moved in the Congress by two politicians is unlikely to be adopted much less endorsed by the current US administration. Declaring Pakistain a terrorism sponsor would hurt Pakistain, but would also lead to termination of all Pak-US cooperation, with dire consequences for peace in Afghanistan and South Asia. In any case, America is not the world. Isolating Pakistain will be a challenging, ultimately fruitless endeavour for India.

China is a neighbour of both Pakistain and India and Pakistain’s strategic partner. In a conflict, China’s posture would be more relevant than America’s. Beijing has advised both Pakistain and India to open dialogue and exercise restraint. But it’s obvious which one needs to be restrained at present. Indian aggression against Pakistain will evoke a strong Chinese response.

The third major power, Russia, which has considerable regional influence, is no longer India’s all-weather ally, given Modi’s rush to jump into America’s strategic lap. Significantly, even as India’s anti-Pakistain rhetoric has been ramped up after Uri, the first joint Pakistain-Russian military exercises have gone ahead -- that too in Gilgit-Baltistan, to which India lays claim.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have bowed to Indian pressure and joined its decision not to attend the Saarc summit (which Pakistain should have itself cancelled in response to Modi’s threats). Their powerlessness illustrates how Pakistain’s national independence would be compromised were it to succumb to Indian hegemony. It validates the wisdom of our founding fathers in creating Pakistain and of our leaders in securing an effective conventional and nuclear capability to neutralise India’s ability to coerce Pakistain.

Afghanistan’s current alignment with India is strategically more significant. Partly, it is the result of Pakistain’s over-promise and under-delivery of a dialogue with the Afghan Taliban; partly, it is a reflection of the US attempt to use India to displace the influence of Pakistain and China in Afghanistan. But India’s presence in Afghanistan, like that of the US, is vulnerable to the hostility of Afghan myrmidons. And, if Afghan territory continues to be utilised, especially by India, for terrorism and subversion against Pakistain, the latter has options for direct action to counter this. Pakistain has considerable space, now and in future, to reverse Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
’s hostility through incentives and disincentives.

Regional isolation?
[DAWN] ISOLATION is a word bandied about all too easily when it comes to discussing Pakistain’s place in the international community. In this century alone, seemingly every other year there has been alarmist rhetoric, by external rivals and internal political neophytes that Pakistain is on the verge of global isolation. Indeed, isolation and its more draconian cousin, containment, are issues that no country with a modicum of international trade linkages and an interest in being part of the modern world should ever take lightly. No country should want to be in the situation that, for example, North Korea is in, notwithstanding the ties that country has had to Pakistain over the years.
Such good, nuclear friends they are.
Yet, hyperbole and overwrought commentary aside, there are clearly problems that Pakistain has to contend with on the external front.

The call by Sri Lanka to postpone the Saarc summit may have been a mere formality given the earlier withdrawals, but the very fact that the Sri Lankan government felt it necessary to state that the "prevailing environment in the region is not conducive" to holding the summit is telling. Moreover, the condemnation by Sri Lanka of "terrorism in all its forms and manifestations" should not go unnoticed. A change of government in Sri Lanka in January 2015 installed an India-leaning administration in that country, but Pakistain-Sri Lanka ties are decades old and military and diplomatic cooperation have historically been reliable. With Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan and, of course, India already having declined to attend the November summit in Islamabad, five of seven countries in Pakistain’s immediate neighbourhood are unwilling to attend a symbolic conference in the nation’s capital. Surely, that must call for some serious debate -- a debate that goes beyond passionate denunciations of Indian machinations.

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah has already made a sensible call for a joint session of parliament to discuss tensions with India and such a session can easily be expanded to discussing the overall regional security and diplomatic environment. Admittedly, joint sessions have not yielded substantive policy inputs in recent years, but they have become a symbol of democratic counsel, and command the attention of policymakers and sections of the public. If opposition politicians can resist grandstanding and unnecessary political attacks and the government can demonstrate a genuine interest in parliamentary debate, a joint session could help at least frame a debate about Pakistain’s foreign policy and national security policies more effectively.
Lots of ifs and conditionals there, not one of which will be answered in the affirmative as events proceed.
By any rational measure, Pakistain is far from isolated internationally. Yet, it is undeniable that countries with which Pakistain has had long-standing relationships -- relationships that are worth protecting and nurturing -- are increasingly uneasy with this country’s perceived policies.
Not to mention its actual actions.
To the extent that Pakistain has legitimate interests to protect, it must do so robustly and without fear of outside opinion. Surely, however, more effective diplomacy is called for.

Gulf states call on UN to intervene in Aleppo
That part of the UN interested in intervening already is doing so, on various sides.
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) demanded on Saturday that the UN intervene in Syria to stop aerial bombardments of the city of Aleppo that it said were killing hundreds of civilians.

The Sunni Moslem dominated council - representing Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
- said a Syrian government offensive on the city was systematically destroying neighborhoods and a "flagrant aggression contrary to international laws."

"The Secretary-General ... demands that the UN Security Council intervene immediately to stop the aggression on the city of Aleppo and end the suffering of the Syrian people," the GCC said in a statement on Saudi state news agency SPA.

It called on the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
to "implement relevant council resolutions over the Syria crisis."

For 10 days a Russian-backed Syrian government offensive has been underway to capture eastern Aleppo and crush the last urban stronghold of a revolt against Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
that began in 2011.

The collapse of the latest Syria ceasefire has heightened the possibility that Gulf states including Saudi Arabia and
Qatar might arm Syrian rebels with shoulder-fired missiles to defend themselves against Syrian and Russian warplanes, US officials said on Monday.

La Belle France’s foreign minister said on Wednesday he was working to put forward a UN Security Council resolution for a ceasefire in Aleppo, and that any country that opposed it would be deemed complicit in war crimes.

The United States continues to maintain that negotiations are the only way to end the carnage.

But frustration with Washington has intensified, raising the possibility that Gulf allies - key backers of Syrian rebels - or The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
will no longer continue to follow the US lead or will turn a blind eye to wealthy individuals looking to supply man-portable air defense systems, or MANPADS, to opposition groups.

Houthis target UAE ship carrying aid
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Saudi-led Arab Coalition have dubbed attack by Yemeni militias on a UAE ship carrying aid Saturday in the Bab al-Mandab strait as a "dangerous indication."

The coalition said civilians onboard the ship were rescued.

Earlier, the Iran-backed Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militias have claimed they hit a vessel on Saturday operated by the UAE military, which is part of the Arab Coalition fighting in support of Yemen’s government.

"Rockets targeted an Emirati warship as it approached the coast of Mokha," on the Red Sea, the Houthis said in a statement on their sabanews.net website.

"It was completely destroyed," they said.

In a statement published by the official WAM news agency, the UAE military said the boat was on a routine trip from Aden, further south, and that it had launched an investigation.

It said the boat was hired, but did not provide more details or say if the vessel was damaged.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Kerry said he ‘lost argument’ to back Syria diplomacy with force
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
, in a meeting last week with a small number of Syrian civilians and others, said he had lost an argument within the B.O. regime to back up diplomatic efforts to end the bloodshed in Syria with the threat of using military force, the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
reported on Friday.

The newspaper said it had obtained an audio recording of the 40-minute discussion that took place at the Dutch Mission to the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
on Sept. 22.

The approximately 20 participants included representatives of four Syrian groups that provide education, rescue and medical services in rebel-held areas and diplomats from three or four countries, the Times said.

The meeting took place days after a ceasefire Kerry had negotiated with Russia had collapsed and rebel-held areas of the Syrian city of Aleppo were coming under heavy air strikes as Moscow and Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
’s government rejected a US plea to halt flights.

The Times said Kerry repeatedly complained that his diplomacy had not been backed by a serious threat of military force.

"I think you’re looking at three people, four people in the administration who have all argued for use of force, and I lost the argument," Kerry said in an audio clip posted on the Times website.

"We’re trying to pursue the diplomacy, and I understand it’s frustrating. You have nobody more frustrated than we are," Kerry said.

The recording was made by a non-Syrian who attended the session, the newspaper reported, adding that several other participants confirmed its authenticity.

Russian forces joined the Syrian war a year ago, tipping the balance of power in favor of Assad, who is also supported by Iranian ground forces and Shiite militia fighters from Leb and Iraq.

The Times said several people in the meeting pressed Kerry on what they saw as contradictions in US policy.

It said one woman, Marcell Shehwaro, asked "how many Syrians" had to be killed to prompt serious action.

Kerry responded that "Assad’s indifference to anything" could push the B.O. regime to consider new options, the Times said, but he also said that "any further American effort to arm rebels or join the fight could backfire."

The Times said State Department front man John Kirby declined to comment on what he described as a private conversation. The State Department did not immediately respond to a Rooters request for comment.

Iran says new attack drone modeled on captured US aircraft
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iranian media says the Revolutionary Guard has built a new attack drone which is similar to a US drone captured five years ago.

The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported Saturday that the "Saegheh" drone was built by the Guard's aerospace division and is similar to the RQ-170 Sentinel spy drone. The report did not elaborate on the new drone’s range.

Iran claimed to have shot down an RQ-170 drone in December 2011 and broadcast footage of the recovered aircraft. It also claims to have captured three ScanEagle drones.

Iran said last year that it had successfully tested its replica of the RQ-170.

Last Houthi stronghold in Jawf liberated

... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, the Yemeni official news agency quoted a military source as saying.

"The national army and resistance fighters, backed by the [Saudi-led] Arab Coalition’s jet fighters, launched an offensive on Saturday morning on the sites of the Houthi militia in al-Gail, in which they liberated the village," the military source said.

He added that scores of Houthi militias were killed and maimed, while dozens escaped the battlefield.

Citing military sources, Agence La Belle France-Presse said the festivities, which saw the pro-government forces recapturing large parts of Ghail, killed 11 militias and five government loyalists.

In the Bab al-Mandab region itself, fighting on Saturday killed three loyalists and maimed 17, other military sources said.

The festivities took place in the mountainous Kahbub area overlooking the strait. Five rebels were also killed, the loyalist military sources said.

AFP could not verify the rebel toll from independent sources, and the turbans rarely acknowledge their losses.

Loyalist forces recaptured Perim island in the Bab al-Mandab strait in October last year, gaining a foothold on the strategic shipping lane which connects the Suez Canal and Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

But the militias still control some of the heights which overlook the strait from the mainland, where there has been fierce fighting in recent days.

The commander of Anbar Operations Major General Ismail al-Mahalawi said in a press statement, “Joint security forces from the army, police and tribal fighters managed, this morning, to liberate al-San’a area in Ramadi axis.”

“The battles resulted in the destruction of ten rockets launchers, as well as seizing an explosives factory and four mortar cannons,” Mahalawi explained.

(IraqiNews.com) Anbar – Heet District Council declared on Saturday that the joint security forces called the people of Heet, west of Ramadi, to evacuate the district in preparation to liberate it from the grip of the Islamic State group.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia warns against US attack in Syria
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] "Direct aggression" by the United States towards the Syrian government and armed forces would lead to "frightening, tectonic shifts" in the Middle East, RIA news agency cited Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying on Saturday.

Russia and the United States back opposing sides in the Syrian conflict.

A US-Russian brokered ceasefire in Syria recently fell apart, and Russian war planes on Saturday struck rebel-held areas north of the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Zakharova warned that regime change in Syria would create a vacuum that would be "quickly filled" by "forces of Evil of all stripes."

US-Russian tensions over Syria have escalated since the breakdown of a cease-fire last month, with each side blaming the other for its failure.

Syrian government forces backed by Russian warplanes have launched a major onslaught on rebel-held parts of the northern city of Aleppo.

...back at the barn, a little lightbulb figuratively appeared over Bossy's head...
Russian war planes struck rebel held areas north of Aleppo on Saturday as the army shelled the besieged old quarter in a major offensive, rebels and a monitoring group said.

Russia was reported on Friday to be sending more warplanes to Syria to ramp up its air campaign as the United States said it had not yet given up on finding a diplomatic resolution.

The latest strikes come 10 days into a Russian-backed Syrian government offensive to capture rebel-held eastern Aleppo and crush the last urban stronghold of a revolt against Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
that began in 2011.

Saturday’s air strikes focused on major supply lines into rebel-held areas - the Castello Road and Malah district - while fighting raged in the Suleiman al-Halabi neighborhood, the front line to the north of Aleppo’s Old City.

and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke by telephone for a third day on Friday, with Russia’s top diplomat saying Moscow was ready to consider more ways to normalize the situation in Aleppo.

But Lavrov criticized Washington's failure to separate moderate rebel groups from those the Russians call terrorists, which had allowed forces led by the group formerly known as the Nusra front to violate the US-Russian truce agreed on Sept. 9.

The United States made clear it would not, at least for now, carry through a threat made on Wednesday to halt the diplomacy if Russia did not take immediate steps to end the violence.

Moscow and Assad spurned the ceasefire to launch the new offensive, potentially the biggest and most decisive battle of the civil war, which is now in its sixth year.

Afghanistan
Afghan 'friendly fire' on checkpost kills five soldiers: defence official
[DAWN] An Afghan air force strike killed five soldiers and a police officer in western Afghanistan, an official said Saturday, the latest in a series of so-called "friendly fire" incidents.

Afghan helicopters "mistakenly" bombed their own forces after calling in air support as they battled the Taliban in the Kensk area of Farah province late Friday, Dawlat Waziri, a defense ministry front man, said.

"Because of the wrong coordinates, helicopters bombed an Afghan forces' checkpoint that unfortunately left five soldiers and one coppers dead," he said.

"An investigation into the incident has been launched," he added.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
In Baltimore, the Mayor finally throws Marilyn Mosby under the bus
[HOTAIR] It’s likely true that this very public food fight might not have come about if it weren’t for that piece in New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
Magazine. I read it earlier this week and began working on a column about it, but eventually decided against it. It’s a very long piece from a news hound who was invited to spend family time with the Mosbys on multiple occasions and really dig into their lives. Much of it is flattering, painting the couple as victims of circumstances in some ways, but it also delivers some fairly damning indictments against the state’s attorney. When she revealed that she felt Mayor Rawlings-Blake might have been at fault for some of the handling of the Freddie Gray police trials, though, that seems to have been a bridge too far for the Mayor.

The faults cited by the Mayor won’t come as any sort of shocking revelations to anyone who’s been paying attention. The idea of "bowing to political pressure" is a bit of a misnomer because Mosby’s decision to almost immediately file charges against the coppers was initially more a case of bowing to the demands of the rioters threatening to destroy the city. That’s rather ironic, since it was Rawlings-Blake herself who initially bowed to that pressure when parts of the downtown district were starting to go up in flames. But her accusation of rushing into the process before a full investigation of Gray’s death could be conducted is clearly true. More surprising was her revelation that Mosby had wanted her to hold back information on the Freddie Gray incident from the public, a request which she refused. That led to the trial taking place in the media long before a jury could ever be summoned.

The very public scrap between these two is probably just a symptom of their struggles to maintain some sort of relevance. Rawlings-Blake landed a plum speaking slot at the Democratic convention and is now (somehow) considered a power player in the DNC after the exit of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz
...Congresswoman from Florida, the abrasive chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. She has been a politician since 1992, and prior to that was in training as a political science major. Her primary accomplishment seems to be that she's Jewish...
. She’s also a regular feature on cable news as an election commentator. But with the ghost of the Freddie Gray riots and subsequent trials hanging over her head it’s tough to imagine her finding her way to higher office absent an appointment of some sort.

Mosby appears to be done, with no career lifeboat to jump into. But the reality is that both of them share in the blame for the ongoing disaster in Baltimore, where the violent crime rate continues to spiral out of control, even if it’s overshadowed by the ongoing apocalypse in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
. Seeing the two of them in an embarrassing public spat like this is simply a side-show.

#1  in thr NYT piece Mosby says the riots were the result of Mayor's misinformation and then gives as an example of the misinformation, the fact that the mayor said the police vehicle Freddy Grey's was in stopped 3 times when it actually stopped 4 or 5 times. That's such a trivial piece of misinformation, it implies Mosby had no legitimate complaint. Of course the Mayor did give the police the order to let the mob destroy stuff but Mosby didn't bring that up.

#2  Similar bullshit is going down in Tulsa.

They're prosecuting an officer for shooting (once, not a dozen times) a criminal who was not responding to lawful orders and who reached into their vehicle (thus triggering the shooting by the officer).

Fuck the victim--the officer has a right to go home at night. I can't believe that there hasn't been more support for her.

Careful Crusader, I've seen that video several times and the windows were closed, no way he was reaching in. Also she had backup there that was going for his taser. There were several people yelling/screaming at the guy and it is quite possible that they were yelling conflicting things.

It looks to me that the woman cop panicked. She supposedly had drug recognition training and thought the man was on PCP and was afraid for her life.

I think this one will take a while to sort out.

#7  mosby and rawlings-blake did not get to their current positions via affirmative action

that would be understandable

actually they were elected - Mosby won the Dem nomination for State's attorney for Baltimore which in a one party town is all you need

Rawlings-Blake was also elected

#8  ...were they elected upon their record of performance (in another word 'merit') in public service or elsewhere (not inclusive of party apparatus)?

#9  ....mosby and rawlings-blake did not get to their current positions via affirmative action

Neither have enough sense to poor piss from a boot. Affirmative Action became a reality for them long before public office.

#11  Slightly off topic. I got shot through my helmet 1969. Flattened a piece of my skull. Infantry, no blood, you're fine. Many years later, I start having seizures. A first class civ hospital finally does MRI. Serious damage. They send me to the VA hospital with a DVD of the MRI. A clearly AA doc takes my DVD, brings it HOME, and loses it. That was 2010. New doc, sees damage on new MRI, calls it. 6 years to get it right. AA. Is real. Now you know why I am off.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan blasts world powers for Syria fighting; says this is a plot
[RUDAW.NET] Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
on Saturday blasted the international community for what he said was inaction in Syria, asking whether the world was waiting for a million dead in the war-torn country before taking serious action.

"More than 600,000 civilians have been killed due to the war in Syria," Erdogan said at the opening of the parliament’s new legislative year.

"Should the international community wait until the figure reaches a million dead?" he said.

He also wondered how the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) could still exist in many parts of Syria and Iraq, despite a global coalition fighting against it for two years.

"This is the fifth year in Syria and third year in Iraq since ISIS emerged," Erdogan said, claiming there is a "plot" to maintain tension and instability in the region.

He said that is why his country had launched an incursion deep into Syria to clear the border areas from "terrorist groups."

"On the world stage, nobody opposed our operations in Syria, and so far Operation Euphrates Shield has cleared 5,000 square kilometers from ISIS (ISIS)," Erdogan said.

In a part of his speech the Turkish president accused the United States of supporting the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and its allied PYD and YPG forces, in Syria.

"America is working with PKK, PYD and YPG and opposing The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and that is a giant mistake they make," he warned.

He also claimed there are attempts to let the PKK take part in a looming offensive on the ISIS-held city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
in northern Iraq. "We will never accept that," he warned.

The Mosul offensive is anticipated to kick off soon, maybe as early as next month, and Erdogan vowed Turkish "will play a role" in the battle as well.

Erdogan had earlier revealed the timing for the battle to push ISIS out of its stronghold of Mosul as October 19.

Turkey parliament extends mandate for troops in Iraq, Syria by 1 year

[AlAhram] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey's parliament on Saturday overwhelmingly approved an extension by one year of an existing mandate to use Turkish troops abroad in Syria and Iraq.

The bill passed easily on the first day of the new session of parliament with support from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), secular opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). Only the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) voted against.

#2  Note the reference to the Saudis. Will Erdogan tolerate the Shiias winning in Syria, and take it out on the Kurds.

I'm hoping Trump is principled enough to say 'anyone who attacks the Kurds in Syria and Iraq will have cruise missiles raining down on them.'
