Seth Rich sent 44,053 DNC emails to WikiLeaks
h/t Instapundit
Fox News is reporting this morning that a federal investigator who reviewed murdered DNC staffer Seth Rich’s computer after his death found evidence that he had been communicating with WikiLeaks:

Money quote:

The federal investigator, who requested anonymity, said 44,053 emails and 17,761 attachments between Democratic National Committee leaders, spanning from January 2015 through late May 2016, were transferred from Rich to MacFadyen before May 21.

On July 22, just 12 days after Rich was killed, WikiLeaks published internal DNC emails that appeared to show top party officials conspired to stop Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont from becoming the party’s presidential nominee. That controversy resulted in Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigning as DNC chairperson. A number of Sanders supporters refused to back party nominee Hillary Clinton, and some subsequently formed groups to work against Clinton and the party.

Crystal Eschert, Fired By Charlotte Over Pro-Law Enforcement Post, Sues, Is Now Gonna Be A Millionaire
h/t Instapundit
A jury just sent the city of Charlotte a strong message: You can’t fire employees for saying things on Facebook you disagree with, and you can’t use those posts to justify an unlawful firing.

The jury found that the city of Charlotte was retaliating against Crystal Eschert when they fired her for a Facebook post that she made in the days following the shooting of Michael Brown. The jury awarded her $1.5 million.

On August 20, 2014, 10 days after the shooting of justifiably dead criminal, Michael Brown, Fire Investigator Crystal Eschert posted privately to her friends on her Facebook page:

"White guy shot by police yesterday near Ferguson ... Where is Obama? Where is Holder? Where is Al Sharpton? Where are Trayvon Martin’s parents? Where are all the white guys supporters? So is everyone MAKING it a racial issue? So tired it’s a racial thing. If you are a thug and worthless to society, it’s not race ‐ You’re just a waste no matter what religion, race or sex you are."

Somebody named Linda Havery later emailed then-police chief Rodney Monroe and Jon Hannan to complain about the Facebook post, according to Charlotte Observer. The e-mail complained that, even though the Facebook post was private, it "could cause unrest in the community."

The city fired Eschert over the Facebook post, arguing that she could not do her job if she used words like, "thug."

Parts of the supervolcano Campi Flegrei in Naples are near to eruption

#1  Reading the article, we discover:

We don't know when or if this long-term unrest will lead to an eruption, but Campi Flegrei is following a trend we've seen when testing our model on other volcanoes, including Rabaul in Papua New Guinea, El Hierro in the Canary Islands, and Soufriere Hills on Montserrat in the Caribbean.”

The problem is that the climate people have brought all modelling into disrepute. And five hundred years is a pretty big window. Call me back when they've tightened it down to a month or or a year.

Former Klingon Official Suggests Trump Is a Threat on Par With ISIS, North Korea
[Free Beacon] Ned Price, a former Obama-administration CIA official, said on MSNBC Tuesday that the Trump administration could be a national security threat on par with the Islamic State and North Korea.

Price has previously drawn attention for a February Washington Post op-ed saying he chose to leave the CIA because of President Donald Trump. Price suggested while appearing on "Morning Joe" that the White House should be considered a threat because America's enemies could potentially take advantage of it.

MSNBC's Willie Geist asked Price about the relationship between the President and the intelligence community, especially in light of Trump's reported recent disclosure of classified information to Russian officials.

"This is not a president who has ever had a good relationship with the intelligence community, and in fact, even before he was president as the Republican nominee, he just casually dismissed the high-confidence findings of all 17 intelligence agencies that Russia meddled in the election," Price said.

Price went on to emphasize how he felt the President had misstepped in relation to the intelligence community before implying that the President might represent a national security threat.

"Last week we had this hearing of all of our national security officials on worldwide threats, and of course they covered ISIL, they covered Syria, North Korea," Price said, referring to the hearing which featured the first public inquiry on the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

"I think we have to start asking ourselves, at what point does this administration itself become a threat we have to be concerned about?" Price continued.

Detailed from the CIA to "Onward Together" ?

U.S. Ambassador, Soetoro Holdover, Signals Disdain for Representing Trump
[Free Beacon] The U.S. ambassador to Qatar, an Obama administration holdover whose family donated hundreds of thousands to the Obama campaign, signaled her distaste for working under President Donald Trump, raising questions about her commitment to the new administration.

Dana Shell Smith, the U.S. ambassador for Qatar who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, took to Twitter last week to express her frustration at Trump's administration, which has been battling negative headlines over a plethora of foreign and domestic issues.

Smith, whose Hollywood executive brother bundled at least $50,000 to $100,000 for Obama during his run for the White House, tweeted that it is "increasingly difficult to wake up overseas to news from home, knowing I will spend today explaining our democracy and institutions."

Smith's public expression of frustration with Trump is raising eyebrows both inside and outside of the administration among those who believe that Obama-era holdovers are working to undermine the current president.

Former Attorney General Ed Meese: Trump's Travel Ban ‘Clearly' Legal, Should Be Upheld
[PJ] WASHINGTON ‐ Edwin Meese, former U.S. attorney general in the Reagan administration, told PJM that President Trump "clearly" has the constitutional authority to implement his executive order restricting travel from certain Muslim-majority countries.

Meese predicted that the order would be "upheld" in the appeals process if judges follow the Constitution.

Meese also told PJM he supports Trump’s executive order on blocking federal funding to sanctuary cities, which was blocked by a federal judge.

PJM asked Meese if he is satisfied with the Trump administration’s strategy of issuing executive orders on sanctuary cities and travel restrictions, rather than involving Congress.

"Yes, I think what the president is trying to do both in terms of deregulation, getting rid of unnecessary regulations that are only hurting the economy, I think what he’s done in terms of his appointments, certainly to the cabinet and the other appointments, are excellent, particularly the Supreme Court appointment of Justice Gorsuch, so I think they’ve done very well," he said during an interview after the recent Republican National Lawyers Association’s Annual National Policy Conference.

Judge pleads guilty in massive Social Security Disability fraud case
[Wash Times] An administrative judge involved in one of the biggest Social Security frauds in history pleaded guilty Friday, admitting that he helped scam the federal government out of potentially more than half a billion dollars in bogus disability payments.

David B. Daugherty, a former administrative law judge, approved at least 3,149 disability cases filed by a single lawyer in eastern Kentucky. More than 1,700 of those have been deemed fraudulent by government investigators, obligating the government to pay out more than $550 million in lifetime benefits.

Daugherty pleaded guilty to two counts of receiving illegal gratuities. The charge is similar to bribery, though the payoff is made after the fact, not before.

"This admission that a judge in a position of trust took over a half-million dollars in cash from a crooked lawyer is outrageous," said Rep. Sam Johnson, chairman of the House Ways and Means subcommittee that oversees the program. "This case proves once again that more needs to be done to stop disability fraud across America. I’m committed to working with my colleagues to help protect taxpayer dollars and prevent disability fraud."

Disability fraud appears to be growing, with some of the biggest scams being detected in recent years. But the one Daugherty was involved in was staggering in its brazenness.

#3  Mr. Daugherty's partner, Eric Conn, has been ordered to pay $31M in damages and civil penalties as a result of this scam.

Attorney Conn would take cases from the public and then Judge Daugherty would have them assigned to his docket. I suspect there was a transaction fee involved.

Judge Daugherty seems to have a pretty good batting record also.

Factory wages too low to generate Rust Belt renaissance promised by POTUS, study finds
[Wash Times] President Trump made boosting manufacturing the centerpiece of his economic agenda, vowing to revitalize blue-collar America, but factories just aren’t what they used to be, and the notion of "good-paying" manufacturing jobs that connect high school graduates to the middle class is quickly becoming a myth.

Instead, rank-and-file production workers now lag behind much of the rest of the economy in terms of paychecks, forcing economists to wonder whether the push for more factories is desirable in the first place.
Factory workers may indeed need factories. But what do I know ?
Even the service industry, long dismissed as second-tier employment, averages higher wages than factory laborers, according to a study by the Congressional Research Service that casts doubt on Mr. Trump’s promise of a Rust Belt renaissance.

"The strong middle-class entree that the manufacturing industry offered two generations ago is no longer really there," said Michael J. Hicks, an economics professor at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
Blinding flash of the obvious Hicks, blinding flash.
"Manufacturing jobs are increasingly bifurcated," said Mr. Hicks, who wasn’t involved in the study. "For well-educated people, they are good-paying jobs, and for poorly educated people, they are fairly poor-paying jobs."

#3  Depends on what 'education' you are referring to, g(r)om.

'Installation' typically requires process, technical skills, math, social skills (i.e. working with others) and critical thinking.

True Trade Apprenticeships last from 3-5 years in the US and Canada, depending on the trade. You work and attend required trade-specific classes for the duration. There are consequences (like losing your apprenticeship and your job) if you choose not to.

#5  Trump has only been in office 115 days. The MSM has ignored his accomplishments and they have created unrealistic expectations for him. If Trump walked on the water, the media would criticize Trump for not being able to swim.

Trump sent Tillerson to meet with Russian foreign minister Lavrov five days ago. WAPO in another posting at R-burg questioned whether Rex Tillerson was talking to the Russians "inappropriately" during the meeting. WAPO decided to spin-up their "unnamed sources" in a made-up story about "someone" who said "something" in the completely appropriate meeting. The MSM would criticize Trump for not doing his job if one thing or another was not discussed in the meeting. For crying-out-loud, WWII would never have been won in today's political climate if playing by the left's made up rules.

Private investigator: There is evidence Seth Rich had Wiki Leaks contacts
[FOX 5 as posted in Drudge] WASHINGTON - It has been almost a year since Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich was murdered in the nation's capital. There have been no solid answers about why he was killed until now.

Rich was shot and killed last July in Northwest D.C and police have suggested the killing in the District's Bloomingdale neighborhood was a botched robbery. However, online conspiracy theories have tied the murder to Rich's work at the DNC.

Just two months shy of the one-year anniversary of Rich's death, FOX 5 has learned there is new information that could prove these theorists right.

Rod Wheeler, a private investigator hired by the Rich family, suggests there is tangible evidence on Rich's laptop that confirms he was communicating with WikiLeaks prior to his death.

Now, questions have been raised on why D.C. police, the lead agency on this murder investigation for the past ten months, have insisted this was a robbery gone bad when there appears to be no evidence to suggest that.

Wheeler, a former D.C. police homicide detective, is running a parallel investigation into Rich’s murder. He said he believes there is a cover-up and the police department has been told to back down from the investigation.

#5  The key here seems to be the approximately 90 minutes between the know exit of the City Bar and the police report of shots fired. More than enough time for the 1 mile walk from the bar to his home. During that period, it is possible a prolonged conversation with person(s) regarding the leaked emails might have taken place. Shot twice in the back suggests perhaps the answers were unsatisfactory. Crime scene forensics about the distance from the shooter to the victim would be revealing about his pace at the moment of being shot, since running and walking produce different sprawl patters as the decendent falls, as well as powder burns and GSR. Most failed robbery victims are not shot in the back, and usually there is some attempt to take valuables even after the shooting. The Clinton trackrecord for coincidental fatalities does strain credulity after a time, so suspicion about leaks that might lose her the Presidency do seem reasonable, especially with fatal outcomes, however apparently coincidental.

Beltway Party Senator Bob Corker: 'White House in downward spiral'
[The Hill] Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) says President Trump’s White House must reverse the "downward spiral" it finds itself in.

"The White House has got to do something soon to bring itself under control and in order," he said Monday, according to Bloomberg. "It’s got to happen."

Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, made his remarks following a Washington Post report that Trump revealed highly classified intelligence information in a meeting with the Russian foreign minister and ambassador.
Corker relies on the WAPO for his intelligence reporting and political insights ?
"Obviously they’re in a downward spiral right now and they’ve got to figure out a way to come to grips [with] all that’s happening," Corker said.

Current and former U.S. officials told The Post that Trump relayed information from a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The information was provided by a U.S. partner through an intelligence-sharing arrangement. The partner did not give America permission to share the information with Russia.

A U.S. official with knowledge of the meeting said Trump "revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies."

#2  I'm sure Trump disclosed some information that Russians found extremely useful*. As well as conveying some warnings that Russians can't ignore. And, possibly, received some useful information in exchange.
That's the nature of a dialog. That did they expect him and Lavrov to do - hurl insults at each other, the way they conduct political "arguments" in DC?

*IMO, mostly confirming Russian perception that Americans know little & understand even less about ISIS and ME in general.

#3  Excellent point g(r)om and we must also keep in mind that POTUS is the ultimate DECLAS authority. Alluding to intelligence derived from 'foreign partner sources' as some sort of exemption carries no water in this regard.

This WAPO conspiracy story appears to be bombshell whilst Clinton's open network 'homebrew' server containing highly classified data is no big deal.

The hypocrisy is absolutely astounding, unless you consider the leftest media and democratic sources.

#5  Trump revealed highly classified intelligence information in a meeting with the Russian foreign minister and ambassador.

The WAPO story as a fiction and classic disinformation, cultivates several key democratic initiatives:

1. Sows chords of distrust within the Trump administration and advisory team.

2. Promotes the alleged Russian connection to the Trump administration.

3. Distills and pushes further into history the previous classified email violations of Hillary Clinton.

4. Creates Dem talking points and fills the media [to include FOX every 3 minutes] with negative news on POTUS.

5. Provides additional fodder for the 'high crimes and misdemeanors' impeachment crowd.

6. Throws a wet blanket over POTUS' foreign relations accomplishments, and raises questions regarding future meetings with foreign officials.

#7  Spot on Mr. B. Trump made some off-hand remark or joke during the campaign about Russia releasing Hillary's missing emails. Some Demoncratic operative(s) saw opportunity and ran with it. The meme was thus created. No one have been able to provide names, cite any instances of collusion or the illegal exchange of information by people on the Trump team or by Trump. There is no Russia scandal. It is trial by innuendo, libel, lies, smear, and disinformation by the Donks. It is a matter of putting the big lie in the MSM echo chamber and turning the crank endlessly as did Dr. Joseph Goebbels. The left does not like Trump and they will do anything to take him down. He threatens the cozy UniParty arrangement in D.C.

About 1,000 hostages freed from mosque in Central African Republic
[AlAhram] About 1,000 people held hostage since the weekend by armed militias in a mosque amid violent festivities in southeastern Central African Republic have been freed, U.N. officials said on Monday.

"I can confirm that the mosque is now empty. The last 250 men inside until this afternoon have been transferred out," said Herve Verhoosel, front man for the U.N. peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA), by telephone from Bangui.

Women, children and the injured had been set free earlier on Monday before the remaining men were evacuated from the building.

He added that MINUSCA forces had since opened fire on the militias who had been guarding the mosque and had mobilised a helicopter to the town on the Congolese border.

The Bangassou festivities entered their third day on Monday and have involved hundreds of fighters with heavy weaponry in the latest sign that a multi-year conflict spurred by ethnic and religious tensions is worsening.

Pressures mount on Iraqi government for liberation of Islamic State’s Kirkuk stronghold
Hawija (IraqiNews.com) Politicians and locals’ pressures have mounted on the Iraqi government to carry out a security campaign to drive out Islamic State

bandidos gunnies from the town of Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk.

Aljournal News website quoted Ahmed Khourshid, a member of Hawija’s mayoral council saying that some tribal representatives had given the Iraqi government a week before they launch an attack on the town. He said the representatives were planning a conference on Tuesday discussing the delayed liberation and means to press the government on speeding up action in that respect.

"If the heinous torture of our people by ISIS (Islamic State) bandidos gunnies in Hawija continues without attention from the concerned (officials), attendants will give the government a week before they begin liberation operations," Khourshid stated.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
Mohammed Tamim, an Iraqi parliament member, said in a statement that people in Hawija were experiencing "a genocide", adding that the town has not seen "any action by security forces". He urged Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to hasten with the liberation of the town.

Islamic State members have held Hawija and some neighboring areas in southwestern Kirkuk since they emerged in 2014 to proclaim an "Islamic Caliphate" in Iraq. Since then, the group has executed hundreds of local civilians and security members for collaborating with security forces or attempting to flee the town.

The Iraqi government has said it wa going to target Islamic State havens in Anbar, Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...

Western Mosul Reconquest

IS control 9% of western Mosul, chemical weapons factory seized

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants control only nine percent of territories in western Mosul, a spokesperson of the Iraqi command said on Monday as battles reach the group’s final strongholds.

Brig. Gen. Yahia Rasoul, spokesperson of the Joint Operations Command, said Iraqi forces invaded the northern section of 17 Tamuz, the first district Islamic State captured in the city in 2014. He added that only a few number of militants are remaining in the city, suffering scarcity of food and combat supplies.

Meanwhile, Federal Police chief Shaker Jawdat was quoted by al-Arabiya news channel saying his forces killed 173 Islamic State members while invading the Uraybi and Refaie districts. He said forces had also invaded the Ektesadiyeen district.

He said in a statement that police seized the group’s biggest chemical weapons factory run by the group in 17 Tamuz district, defusing several chemical IEDs.

According to Jawdat, 60 senior IS members fled with their families from 17 Tamuz.

Mass Islamic State fighters grave found in western Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A mass grave of Islamic State members was found Monday at a district retaken by Iraqi security forces in western Mosul as operations to clear the region from militants reach their final stages.

Col. Mortada Hassan, from the Iraqi army, told BasNews that the army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service forces found a mass grave containing what are believed to be the relics of 20 members of the Islamic State’s Hisbah (vigilantees) group at al-Haramat.

Hassan said the dead bodies were carried to a forensic authority department.

Islamic State has lost hundreds of fighters and senior leaders since Iraqi troops, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and paramilitary forces, launched an offensive in October to retake the city. Since the launch of the campaign, dozens of mass graves of civilians and security members executed by IS have been discovered.

Coalition generals say there are less than 1000 IS members remaining in the western side of Mosul where Iraqi generals claim control over more than 90 percent of territories.

21 IS members killed, 3 arrested in airstrikes, special operations in western Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com)Twenty-one Islamic State members were killed and three others were arrested on Monday in airstrikes and special operations by the Iraqi security forces struggling to recapture the last districts held by the group in western Mosul.

Cap. Abbas al-Babeli, from the Interior Ministry’s Rapid Response Forces, told Shafaaq News website that the army’s Counter-Terrorism Service forces killed nine IS militants and arrested three others in special operations at al-Rifaie district.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said Iraqi fighter jets killed 12 IS members and destroyed their booby-trapping and explosives factories in al-Baaj region, west of Mosul and near the borders with Syria.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Routine arrest leads Minneapolis police to arsenal
[STARTRIBUNE] Minneapolis police uncovered an arsenal of guns and bomb-making devices during a routine arrest last week.

According to police, a man walked by a parked car in north Minneapolis about 5 p.m. Thursday and confronted the people inside after they threw food wrappers on the ground. They ignored him until he paused to get the car license number. The men then got out of the car and indicated they had guns, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday.

The man flagged down officers, the complaint says, but the men from inside car continued to yell at him and resisted the officers’ attempts to control the situation. The men were insistent they needed to be near the car because a drone was coming to deliver a package, the complaint said. Because of the suspicious circumstances and fear for the man’s safety, the men were placed in the squad while officers searched their car.

Inside, the officers found a hand grenade, handgun, assault rifles and magazines and a large quantity of ammunition, the complaint said. They also found cellphones, computers and electronics equipment, including drone parts.

Bomb squad personnel called to the scene noted that the large amount of ammunition and electronic devices could be used for bomb-making, the complaint said.

Abdullah N. Alrifahe, 27, of Minneapolis, was charged with a gross misdemeanor for carrying a pistol in public without a permit. In December, he was convicted of the same offense.

It could not be determined whether the FBI or another federal agency is investigating.

Lawmakers move to block state contracts for any builders of Trump's border wall
[LATimes] California legislators took the first step Tuesday to ban state government contracts for any company that helps build President Trump's promised wall along the Mexico border, with the author of the plan urging colleagues "to be on the right side of history."

The bill by state Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) would prohibit any company from receiving a new or extended contract with the state of California if it participates in a future effort to build a new wall along the 2,000-mile international border.

"The wall is another attempt to separate and divide us," Lara said in testimony to the Senate Governmental Organization Committee. "It sends a message that we are better off in a homogenous society."

Senate Bill 30 won committee passage on a party-line vote, with Republicans expressing concern about the need for additional border security. Representatives of the construction industry also voiced opposition, arguing Lara's bill forces contractors into the middle of a divisive political fight.

"This is precedent-setting," said Todd Bloomstine, a lobbyist representing the Southern California Contractors Assn. "What next unpopular project would be [on the] blacklist?"

Lara told lawmakers he will amend the bill to exclude any work by a company -- including current bids on border wall projects -- that takes place prior to the bill's becoming law.

Trump's campaign promise of a new border wall remains in limbo in Washington, as members of Congress on both sides of the aisle voice skepticism about its funding.

Tuesday's hearing in Sacramento often veered into the appropriateness of the wall itself, with environmental groups expressing concerns about animal species that live on both sides of the border. That testimony became emotional for Juan Altamirano, an associate director of Audubon California who crossed the border with his family as a young child.

"We need more migration and not stagnation," Altamirano said.

Nisar orders crackdown on anti-army material online
[DAWN] Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
on Sunday ordered the cybercrime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to take action against those involved in an anti-army campaign on social media platforms.

"Under constitutional guidelines on freedom of expression, unwarranted criticism of security forces and other institutions responsible for the defence of the realm is not allowed. No citizen can be involved in a campaign that tarnishes the reputation and respect of the armed forces," an interior ministry statement quoted him as saying.

"Disrespecting the Pakistain Army and its officials under the guise of freedom of expression will not be tolerated," he said.

Online criticism of the armed forces began after Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor on May 10 announced the withdrawal of an earlier tweet, that "rejected" the government’s notification of the findings of a body set up to investigate a story published in Dawn last year.

Iraq
Iraq’s oil production up 36% in 2017: official
So much for reducing production to prop up prices.
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq’s oil production surged by 36% in 2017 compared to 2014, an Iraqi cabinet official said in statements quoted by Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
News Agency (QNA).

Saad al-Hadithi, a spokesperson of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s media office, said oil produced by Iraqi in 2015 was 20 percent higher than 2014’s 3.11 million barrels.

Associated gas production also moved up by 50 percent between 2014 and 2016, according to Hadithi, who added that 2800 million cubic feet of that gas went untapped during the same period.

Since March 2016, Iraqi exported more than 2.3 million barrels of condensates, plus more than 40.000 tons of liquefied natural gas, with revenues standing at USD100 million.

During the third quarter of 2016, Iraq became a LNG exporter, according to the agency.

Late last March, Iraq’s petroleum exporting company, SOMO, said Iraq had cut down its oil production by 300.000 barrels per day to 4.46 millions.

Iraq plans to increase its crude production to five million barrels per day before the end of 2017. Its reserves soared in February to 153 billion barrels.

Iraq is OPEC’s second largest oil producer, following Soddy Arabia

Iraqi forces capture large hilltop southwest of Al-Qaiwaran
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Popular Mobilization Units (Hashd al-Sha’abi) captured the large hilltop of Tal al-Sheikh near the al-Qaiwaran area in the Nineveh Governorate, the PMU’s official media wing reported this morning.

With al-Qaiwaran captured, the Popular Mobilization Units will now push further east towards the al-Qaiwaran area, as they look to expel the Islamic State

Paramilitary forces recapture 4 villages near Syrian borders

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi pro-government paramilitary troops recaptured four villages on Monday as an operation continues to clear Islamic State-held regions near Iraq’s borders with Syria.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said through its media that troops took over Northern Khazna, Sultan, al-Kabar and Tal al-Sheikh villages, south of the Qayrawan region where PMUs, backed by army fighter jets, launched an offensive four days ago against the Islamic State.

PMUs also invaded the village of Mabhal al-Mahdi, north of Qayrawan, engaging in intense encounters with the hard boy group.

A handful of villages have been recaptured over the past few days during the operation targeting Qayrawan and neighboring Baaj. The offensive coincides with parallel government battles in the city of djinn-infested Mosul

, where only a few districts are left to announce a full recapture of the city and end seven months of fighting.

Armed Islamist gunned down in Dagestan
[Interfax] On Sunday, a member of an illegal armed Islamist group was neutralized in a counter-terrorist operation conducted by Russian security forces in a suburb of Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala, an informed source said.

The source said, "Law enforcers have liquidated a militant who opened fire on them resisting arrest. He is already identified. He turned out an active member of a local jihadist armed group."

The armed group is thought to be either Al-Qaeda-affiliated Imarat Kavkaz (Caucasus Emirate), or Vilayat Dagestan which is a local ISIS affiliate.

Supreme Court rejects appeal to reinstate North Carolina voter ID law
[FoxNews] North Carolina's tough voter identification law was dealt what could be a fatal blow on Monday, as the Supreme Court rejected an appeal to reinstate the policy.

Advocates of the law said it was meant to preserve the integrity of elections and counter voter fraud. But critics said it unfairly singled out black voters.

The justices on Monday left in place a lower court ruling citing such alleged discrimination. That ruling struck down the law's photo ID requirement and reduction in early voting.

The decision comes just days after President Trump ordered a a review of voter fraud allegations.

In the North Carolina case, the situation was complicated when Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein tried to withdraw the appeal, which was first filed when Republican Pat McCrory was governor.

Chief Justice John Roberts said the political situation created uncertainty over who is authorized to seek review of the lower court ruling.

The dispute is similar to the court fight over Texas' voter ID law, also struck down as racially discriminatory.

Republicans in both states moved to enact new voting measures after the Supreme Court in 2013 struck down a provision of the federal Voting Rights Act that had required them to get advance approval before changing laws dealing with elections.

Voters, civil rights groups and the Obama administration quickly filed lawsuits challenging the new laws. The Trump administration already has dropped its objections to the Texas law.

Shortly before Trump took office in January, the Justice Department urged the Supreme Court to reject the North Carolina appeal.

When the law passed, North Carolina Republicans said voter ID is a sound requirement to increase the integrity of elections. But the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the state provided no evidence of the kind of in-person voter fraud the ID mandate would address. The Richmond, Virginia-based court said the law was enacted with intentional bias against black voters. The law was amended in 2015 to include a method for people unable to get a photo ID to still vote.

Following the appellate ruling, the state asked the high court to allow the challenged provisions to remain in effect in November's election. The justices rejected the request by virtue of a 4-4 tie on most of the challenged provisions, with the four more conservative justices supporting the state's bid.

Roberts cautioned Monday that the rejection of the appeal is not a comment on the court's view about the substance of the law.

#2  I'm not a lawyer, but Glen Reynolds (who is) stated that the law seemed ok, just the appeals process was pooched up so bad that the higher court rejected it based on that.

I would recommend that NC try it again.

#4  "Given the blizzard of filings over who is and who is not authorized to seek review in this Court under North Carolina law, it is important to recall our frequent admonition that “[t]he denial of a writ of certiorari imports no expression of opinion upon the merits of the case.”

Part of a two-page statement issued by Chief Justice Roberts. The writ of certiorari is a denial to hear a case. It will go back to Court of Appeals to further decide.

Graphic aftermath of failed ISIS assault on Aleppo supply line
[ALMASDARNEWS] Late last night, Islamic State

murderous Moslems spearheaded an attack on the al-Azib valley near the Ithriya-Khanasser road in a bid to cutoff the only highway connecting Aleppo with the government mainland of central Syria.

According to al-Masdar News field correspondent Ibrahim Joudeh, festivities erupted at 2 a.m. and continued until 6 a.m when ISIS finally called of its attack which was focused around the al-Majbal checkpoint.

For ISIS commanders, their offensive ultimately looked to relieve pressure on the Maskanah Plains where the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) recently liberated the highly fortified Jirah Airbase in a renewed push towards Raqqa.

Following the jihadist attack, ISIS sustained 15 casualties some of which were retrieved by the SAA. On the other hand, 2 SAA soldiers were killed-in-action while two more were maimed.
Presumably either the above report or the below report is true, but not both.

The observatory stated that turbans from the Islamic State group engaged in festivities with the Syrian regime forces near al-Majbal checkpoint, on Ithriyah-Salmiyah road, in the eastern countryside of Hama, in the early hours of Monday, while added that the terrorist group managed to impose its control over the checkpoint.

Meanwhile,

a land line went kaboom! on a vehicle belonging to the Syrian forces in al-Masasna area, in the northern countryside of Hama, leaving an identified number of casualties, while Syrian government forces shelled several areas in the southern countryside of Hama.

In a related news, festivities continued between the Islamic State and Syrian forces in Hamima area, in eastern Homs, leaving casualties among the ranks of the two sides.

Steyn: The Appropriations Committee has Passed Sentence
FTFA
But even to have to point that out is a defeat: As we agreed, the minute you have to state something so butt-numbingly obvious as that Shakespeare wasn't a Prince of Denmark or a Moor of Venice, you've lost. We've all lost. We're in a mad world, where it seems entirely normal for literary magazines to rule on what fictional characters a novelist is permitted to conceive.

Unlike the two Canadian editors, Lionel Shriver didn't go the perhaps-we-ought-to-have-a-debate route. She decided to throw the whole cultural-appropriation thing back in the appropriators' faces and appeared on stage wearing a sombrero. Naturally the organizers of the so-called "literary festival" stampeded to dissociate themselves, and most of the literary bigfeet could muster no more than tepid and equivocal support. Lionel is nobody's idea of a right-wing loon, but she recognizes, in a way that Kay and Niedzviecki did not, that you can't tiptoe up to this issue and meet the Appropriation mutaween halfway. "Screw off, you totalitarian tossers" is, in fact, the only reasonable response:

As I said, Lionel is nobody's idea of a hardcore right-winger like yours truly, but she's discovering that, when you need 'em, the respectable writers like, say, Francine Prose are never quite there for you. Jonathan Kay is likewise no right-winger, certainly not compared to his splendid mum Barbara. If memory serves, Jonathan has introduced me on stage in Toronto on two occasions, for both of which he volunteered his services. But more recently he has been on a bit of a political odyssey - to the point where he helped Justin Trudeau "write" his memoir. (It's not cultural appropriation if a francophone Liberal, or presumably a Pushtun warlord or a Bhutanese yakherd, pays an anonymous ghost-writer to pretend to be him.)

Over here on the far right, I'm always happy to have people meet me halfway. Indeed, at the moment, on everything that matters - trade, war, health care - there's very little agreement over anything on the American right. But on the left it's different. Increasingly, their view is that the great questions have been settled, there's only one correct answer, and you have to get all of them right - because an 80 per cent ally is, to the new mutaween, a 20 per cent enemy, as Niedzviecki and Kay have discovered.

As it happens, there's one almighty cultural appropriation going on right now. Indeed, it's a heist. The United Kingdom has become the acid-attack capital of the world. Female genital mutilation is practiced in "medical" clinics from Michigan to Melbourne. The taharrush has spread to Cologne and other Central European cities. Ritual beheading has come to French Catholic churches and upstate New York. And if you protest, "Look, I totally deplore all this cultural appropriation. I think it's outrageous that Britain and America and Australia and Europe are culturally appropriating acid attacks and FGM and beheading and honor killings", you're told, "No, no. That's diversity. It's vibrant. What's not to enjoy? It's a beautiful mélange - just like this new Homeland Security proposal to ban laptops from cabin baggage on translatlantic flights, because a western cultural artifact is being appropriated and weaponized in the cause of eastern jihadism. What a rich cultural co-mingling..."

Last two Abu Sayyaf rebels hiding in Bohol gunned down
[Inquirer] The two remaining Abu Sayyaf militants hiding on the island province of Bohol were killed on Monday afternoon, after more than a month on the run following a foiled attempt to set up a local base.

Abu Ubayda and another member identified only as "Asis" both died from bullet wounds in the head. Ubayda was unrecognizable after he was repeatedly shot in the face. Their deaths ended a crisis that started on April 10 when ten Abu Sayyaf rebels entered Barangay Napo in Inabanga town to set up a terror base there.

Residents tipped off the police about the presence of armed men in their midst. The police, in turn, relayed the information to the military. A clash ensued on April 12, leaving three Abu Sayyaf militants dead, including their leader, Abu Rami.

The remaining members of the group fled to nearby Clarin town and hid inside a cave in Barangay Bacani. But Philippine troops discovered their hiding place on April 22 after receiving a tip from a habal-habal (passenger motorcycle) driver and three residents.

Another firefight broke out, leading to the deaths of four rebels, including Joselito Melloria, a subleader of the group who guided the bandits to his hometown of Inabanga via Barangay Napo.

Another Abu Sayyaf member, Saad Kiram, went out of hiding and asked for food from residents in Tubigon town on May 4. He was arrested and taken to a police camp in Tagbilaran City for interrogation. However, he was killed the next day after he clashed with policemen while trying to escape.

On May 10, the police and the military cordoned off Pangangan Island after receiving reports of the presence of the two remaining Abu Sayyaf bandits.

On Monday morning, Hilario Toloy and his 7-year-old son were gathering seashells along the mangrove forest here when the rebels appeared and pointed their guns at them. The two asked the pair to give them food. Reports said the bandits took Toloy’s son hostage to make sure that he would return with the food.

Toloy went home to Barangay Kahayag, just a few meters from the mangrove area, and brought with him food for the bandits. Meanwhile, Hilario's wife, Imelda, reported to the Kahayag village captain, Ian Bahandi, that her husband and son were being held hostage by the rebels. Bahandi, in turn, reported the matter to the military who went to the mangrove area.

As a shootout broke out, father and son scrambled for safety while the two militants ran to nearby Barangay Lomboy where they took a motorcycle. They headed to Barangay Lawis only to find themselves facing a police checkpoint. They abandoned the motorcycle and ran, returning to the mangrove area in Lawis. Troops pursued them and cornered them in the mangrove area, where the militants were killed in separate areas.

Canada excludes Syrian Al-Qaeda branch from terror list
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, currently calling itself Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has succeeded in getting itself off Canada’s list of designated terrorist entities following its latest identity shift.

That complicates the task of prosecuting Canadians who travel to join the group, send it money or propagandize on its behalf.

It also illustrates the pitfalls of Canada following the lead of the U.S. in designating terror groups.

HTS escapes being listed at a time when it is absorbing other jihadi groups and attracting more recruits, even as the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. retreats on multiple fronts.

HTS has a history of renaming itself and altering its structure to confuse outsiders, and the Syrian population, about its true affiliations. But until now, few observers have accepted its claims to have distanced itself from its parent organization.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (the Organization for Conquest in the Levant) began life as an expeditionary force called Jabhat al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...

, now "caliph" of the Islamic State (ISIS). Jabhat al-Nusra was led by Syrian jihadist Abu Mohammad al-Jawlani.

The United States put the group on its terrorist list in 2012, as the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, and Canada followed suit.

Al-Baghdadi soon crossed into Syria himself, renouncing his allegiance to al-Qaeda and founding ISIS in April 2013.

Al-Jawlani’s group remained loyal to the mother organization founded by bin Laden, and Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIS have been at each other’s throats ever since. Meanwhile,

Accused bomber Rahimi seeks reduced charges in New Jersey case
[OANN] An Afghan-born U.S. citizen accused of planting bombs in New York and New Jersey fired on police in New Jersey to evade arrest, but those crimes fall short of attempted murder as charged, his defense lawyer argued on Monday.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi,
...the probably Taliban-trained Afghan-American whose various bombs in New York and New Jersey caused havoc, though not nearly as much as he planned, and who for some reason is mostly in our files as Ahmad Khan Rahami. His writings show he was also inspired by Al Qaeda and ISIS...
29, faces a 30-count indictment in New Jersey’s Union County in relation to a kaboom in New York City’s Chelsea district last September that maimed about 30 people. Another bomb in New Jersey injured no one and other devices he is accused of planting did not detonate.

Rahimi also faces a host of federal charges brought by U.S. prosecutors in New York and New Jersey, who have portrayed him as a jihadist who bought bomb components on eBay, praised Osama bind Laden and kept a journal expressing outrage at the U.S. "slaughter" of mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Paleostine.

Rahimi, who has pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
to all charges, appeared in court shackled at the feet and hands while wearing a blue prison uniform, white skullcap and beard. He appeared to be mouthing verses of the Koran while seated at the defense table.

His state-appointed defense attorney, Peter Liguori, has asked Union County Superior Court Judge Regina Caulfield to dismiss all charges, but in oral arguments he focused mostly on getting three attempted murder charges reduced to aggravated assault in the instances where the coppers were unhurt.

Two other officers were maimed in the shootout, which erupted on the streets of Linden, New Jersey, two days after the bombs detonated. Rahimi was shot between eight and 12 times, Liguori said.

The defense lawyer also asked the judge to drop so-called lesser included offenses, arguing that prosecutors "overcharged" his client.

Turning and firing at a distance and while running to evade arrest did not constitute attempted murder he because it does not show an intent to kill, Liguori said, though he admitted it was criminal conduct more worthy of an aggravated assault charge.

"This is a case where there is emotion, where there is possible prejudice," Liguori said. "His intent was to get away. His intent was to avoid police pursuit ... Running and firing back over your shoulder? Come on."

Twenty-nine shell casings from Rahimi’s gun were recovered at various scenes following the pursuit, prosecutor Ann Luvera said.

The judge said she would issue a written ruling on the defense requests before the end of the month.

German neo-Nazi fugitive caught in Hungary
[IsraelTimes] A well-known German neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier who was on the run after skipping his jail sentence is incarcerated
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
in Hungary on Monday, police say.

Horst Mahler, 81, a co-founder of the 1970s far-left Red Army Faction group who later swung violently far-right, is detained in the city of Sopron near the Austrian border.

Mahler received two concurrent prison terms of five and six years in 2009 for disputing that Nazis had systematically slaughtered six million European Jews during World War II.

Denying the Holocaust is a crime in Germany.

Mahler was temporarily released in 2015 because of ill health and was due to continue serving his prison sentence in the eastern city of Brandenburg on April 19 but failed to show up, according to German newspaper Taz.

Once a left-wing fanatic, Mahler joined Germany’s most radical extreme-right party, the NPD, between 2000 and 2003 before quitting because he found it "outdated."

Mahler has called the Holocaust "the biggest lie in history," praised the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, and given a Hitler salute to a Jewish journalist in an interview.
Deutsche Welle has a good deal more about the vicious idiot, including that he was picked up after requesting political asylum from Hungary, and the various steps in his progress from Red Army Faction to NPD to prominent Reichsburger, arguing that the federal republic is illegitimate.

North Dakota rancher puzzling over calf born with six legs
[TWINCITIES] BEULAH, N.D. -- Gerald Skalsky was at an auction sale when his wife called about an unusual calf born Wednesday on the couple’s ranch south of Beulah in western North Dakota.

"You’re just going to have to see it for yourself," she told him.

Skalsky came home to find the calf, seemingly healthy, but with an extra set of hind legs hanging off the side of its neck.

"I’ve been ranching my whole life, and I’ve never seen anything like it," the 59-year-old rancher said as he watched the Black Angus calf’s bald-faced mother come to lick its baby on the nose.

State Veterinarian Susan Keller said the extra limbs could possibly be one of two similar genetic disorders called polydactyly or polymelia. With polymelia, the extra limbs are often smaller or shrunken in appearance.
Or it could be a chimera, resulting from the blending of two fertilized eggs in the womb.
Keller called the defect an "important topic that producers should not be afraid to report to their veterinarian and to all breed associations. ... Now that DNA testing is possible for more genetic defects in cattle, it is always good to report findings to the breed association offices so they can help determine if the defect is genetic or due to other potential causes."

Keller became informed on polydactyly from two of her former college professors who were some of the first geneticists trying to determine causes for the disorder and help producers eliminate known carriers. She said polydactyly is one that happens in a multitude of breeds and is the result of genetic combinations involving recessive genes.

Keller suggested taking a DNA sample from the calf, cow and bull and said breed associations sometimes offer to pay for the cost of the test if asked for assistance.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Trial of alleged Faqha assassins begins in Gaza
[IsraelTimes] The trial of three men accused of the March liquidation of Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, operations man Mazen Faqha gets underway in Gazoo on Monday.

Officials from the Hamas organization that rules the territory say Israel’s Shin Bet security service planned the killing, which was carried out by Paleostinian "collaborators" in Gazoo.

The chief suspect is former Hamas military wing official Ashraf Abu Lila, who was expelled from the organization a decade ago after he was accused of killing Fatah fighters amid Hamas’s violent coup against the Paleostinian Authority.

According to the Walla news site, the other two suspects served as lookouts for the killing.

Faqha, who was freed from an Israeli prison as part of the 2011 deal to release captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit and deported to Gazoo, was serving a life sentence for organizing a 2002 suicide kaboom.

He was rubbed out near his home on March 24 in Tel el-Hawa, a neighborhood in southwestern Gazoo City, by assailants using a weapon equipped with a silencer.

Italy busts 'mafia operation' in large migrant center in Calabria
[DW] Over 500 agents took part in the overnight raids that saw 68 people placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
in Calabria, officials said on Monday. The crackdown targeted the suspected members of the Arena crime clan, part of the powerful 'Ndrangheta mafia organization in southern Italia.

According to the Sherlocks, the suspects infiltrated the large migrant reception center at Isola di Capo Rizzuto and siphoned off state funds through the complex, which is linked to a Catholic charity. The local priest Edoardo Scordio was also among the suspects.

"Some 32 million euros ($35 million) went straight into the clan's pocket," assistant prosecutor Vincenzo Luberto said. He added an accusation that Father Scordio had received 150,000 euros for offering "spiritual guidance" to the migrants colonists.

'Money printing' through migrant center
Authorities believe that the Calabrian-based Arena clan has controlled the center for over a decade. The camp's management allegedly fixed contracts for providing food to the migrants colonists and withheld tax payments, according to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

The Mafiosi reportedly set up the scheme with the help of Leonardo Sacco, the local head of the Roman Catholic Misericordia association, which is officially in charge of the Sant'Anna Cara facility.

"The Cara of Isola Capo Rizzuto had become a money-printing operation for organized crime thanks to the complicity of those who ran the center," said head of the Italian parliament's anti-mafia commission, Rosy Bindi.

Through the center in Calabria, the mafia also made connections with two other facilities and the reception center on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. Commenting on the Monday arrests, Italia's anti-graft chief Raffaele Cantone said that the mafia infiltration was "just the tip of the iceberg, and certainly not a one-off case."

Paying for 'ghost' migrants colonists
Authorities have long suspected wrongdoing in the Isola Capo Rizzuto camp, which at one time held 1,500 migrants colonists from across the Mediterranean. An inspection in 2013 revealed that refugees were eating small portions of expired food, and that the center was illegally hosting 70 unaccompanied minors in aircraft hangars where there were only two toilets.

A year later, the local prefecture hinted that the number of people in the center might be exaggerated, with management taking money from the state for "ghost" migrants colonists. In 2015, Italia's L'Espresso magazine reported that the managers were stealing funds and making money by starving migrants colonists.

"If the organization was supposed to provide 500 meals, it provided 300 and the rest went hungry," well-known anti-mafia prosecutor Nicola Gratteri said.

The Calabrian-based 'Ndrangheta syndicate is believed to be the most powerful criminal group in Italia and one of Europe's biggest cocaine importers.

Clashes erupt as Palestinians mark ‘Nakba’ Day
[IsraelTimes] 11 said injured while confronting Israeli forces during protests over ’catastrophe’ of Jewish state’s founding.

Paleostinians marching to remember the "catastrophe" of Israel’s founding and the dispossession that accompanied the creation of the Jewish state clashed with Israeli forces in the West Bank on Monday, leaving several maimed.

Annual marches are held on May 15 to mark what Paleostinians call the "Nakba," or catastrophe in Arabic.

At a checkpoint on the outskirts of Ramallah, dozens of Paleostinian youths hurled rocks at Israeli soldiers, who responded with rubber bullets and the foul-smelling riot control spray known as skunk.

A Paleostinian emergency worker said that 11 Paleostinians were taken to the hospital, most of them maimed by rubber bullets. The extent of their injuries was not known.

Earlier, thousands of people carrying Paleostinian flags marched through the city, many carrying large keys to symbolize their claims to the homes they lost in 1948.

"I come every year to commemorate this anniversary, this catastrophe," said Salha Orabi, a descendant of refugees and now a resident of the nearby Jelazoun refugee camp.

"The Nakba for us symbolizes destruction," he added. "It is us who have left our homes and our land."

In Bethlehem, hundreds of Paleostinians stoned Israeli troops guarding Rachel’s Tomb, a shrine venerated by Jews and Moslems, an AFP photographer said. Soldiers fired tear gas and stun grenades. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

In 1948, more than 760,000 Paleostinians fled or were driven from their homes in the war surrounding Israel’s declaration of independence, when neighboring Arab countries vowed to wipe the nascent Jewish state off the map.

For the Paleostinians, the so called "right of return" for refugees and their millions of descendants to the homes they fled or were forced to leave is a prerequisite for any peace agreement with Israel. All Israeli government have firmly rejected the demand as representing a bid by the Paleostinians to destroy Israel as a Jewish state by demographic means. Paleostinian refugees should be absorbed in a Paleostinian state as part of a peace accord, Israel says, just as Israel absorbed hundreds of thousands of Jews from Middle Eastern and North African countries, many of whom were forced to leave their countries of birth.

The May 15 anniversary came this year against the backdrop of a hunger strike by Paleostinians in Israeli prisons, led by tossed in the clink
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti, who is currently serving five life sentences for orchestrating deadly terror attacks against Israelis during the Second Intifada.

In what the Paleostine Liberation Organization said in a statement was a message from his solitary confinement cell, Barghouti said the fast, in its 29th day on Monday, would go on indefinitely.

"My oath and pledge to the prisoners and our people is to pursue the battle for freedom and dignity until it reaches its stated goals," he said.

Turkey blocks German lawmaker visit to soldiers at air base
[Ynet] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has blocked a request for German politicians to visit their country's soldiers at the Incirlik air base, the German government said Monday, increasing the possibility that it might relocate planes supporting the campaign against the ISIS.

Germany has about 270 troops at the base. The refusal was communicated to Germany's ambassador over the weekend, Foreign Ministry front man Martin Schaefer told news hounds.

He said Turkey indicated the refusal was tied to Germany's decision to grant asylum to Turkish soldiers accused by Ankara of participating in last year's failed coup.

Germany has about 250 military personnel stationed there, flying Tornado surveillance missions over Syria and refuelling flights for partner nations battling IS jihadists.

Chancellor Angela Merkel says Turkey’s position is "unfortunate" and that Germany, while continuing talks to resolve the issue, would also "search for alternatives to Incirlik," including in Jordan.

A defense ministry front man says Jordan offers "the best conditions" after Berlin had also looked at Kuwait and Cyprus since Turkey first denied such visits to German MPs for several months last year.

Palestinian vessels try run Gaza blockade, 1 man wounded killed
[IsraelTimes] Navy gunfire seriously injures 1 man; navy boards 2 boats to detain 6 fishermen.

An Israeli patrol boat fired at Paleostinian fishermen accused of breaching the blockade off the northern Gazoo Strip on Monday, seriously wounding one, officials said.

Fishing off the northern part of the strip, adjacent to Israel, is limited to six nautical miles offshore and the Israeli navy regularly fires at Paleostinians who breach the zone’s outer limit.

The fishermen’s union head Nizar Ayash said that the shooting and the arrest of four crewmen happened in one incident and two more arrests were made when the military boarded another Gazoo boat overnight.

The injured man’s family identified him as Mohammed Majed Bakr, 25.

An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed the shooting but did not speak of additional arrests.

"A vessel deviated from the designated fishing zone in the northern Gazoo Strip," the spokeswoman told AFP. "Naval forces in the area called upon the vessel to halt and fired warning shots into the air."

She said that the boat ignored the warning and the navy then fired at it.

"As a result of the fire a Paleostinian was injured and was evacuated to an Israeli hospital for immediate medical treatment," she added.

Israel has maintained a blockade on Gazoo for 10 years, which it says is necessary to keep arms and other materials that can be used for military purposes out of the hands of Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, and other Paleostinian terror groups.

UN officials have called for the blockade to be lifted, citing deteriorating humanitarian conditions.

The size of the fishing zone has varied over the years, having been set at 20 nautical miles by the Oslo accords of the 1990s before being reduced by Israeli authorities.

About 4,000 fishermen work off the coastal strip, more than half of whom live below the poverty line.

Gaza fisherman shot by navy dies in hospital, IDF says

[IsraelTimes] A Gazook fisherman shot by an Israeli Navy ship on Monday after breaching the blockade off the Paleostinian territory dies from his wounds, an IDF spokeswoman says.

The vessel was reportedly the fourth such ship to breach the blockade on Monday, which Paleostinians mark as "Nakba Day," a day of mourning for the displacement of Paleostinians during Israel’s founding in 1948.

The vessel did not turn back after the warning shots, and the Navy ship shot towards it, wounding the fisherman aboard. Navy sailors took the man to an Israeli hospital, where he died from his wounds.

IHC to hear estranged Pakistani-Indian couple's petitions together
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday decided to hear the petition filed by Uzma, an Indian national who went missing from the Indian High Commission earlier this month, along with that filed by her Pak husband, Tahir Ali.

Speaking to media after Monday's hearing, the lawyer representing Ali said his client rejects all allegations levelled against him by Uzma. He added that his client had requested the court to allow him to meet his wife.

However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
Malik Shahnawaz, the attorney representing Uzma before the IHC, told news hounds that the question of Ali meeting his client does not arise, since the marriage contract between the two was signed by his client at gun-point and therefore, is not accepted to be legitimate.

Last week, Uzma appeared before a lower court and stated that she was forced to marry her Pak husband at gunpoint and was subjected to abuse by him.

The twenty-year-old Indian national met Ali, a resident of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
, while the latter was working as a taxi driver in Malaysia eight months ago. The two were married in early May. A few days after their marriage, they had approached the Indian High Commission -- reportedly to secure Indian visas -- after which Uzma had 'gone missing' allegedly from the commission's premises.

5 sharia court judges, including first woman, sworn in
[IsraelTimes] Five new judges in Israel’s Moslem sharia court system are sworn in today at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem.

The group includes Israel’s first female qadi, or sharia judge, Hana Khatib, who drew praise from President Reuven Rivlin.

Khatib is from the town of Tamra, located in the lower Galilee. She practices family and sharia law, according to an online advertisement for her firm.

Sharia courts in Israel deal with personal status issues for the Moslem community, such as marriage, divorce, conversion, inheritance and prevention of domestic violence.

They have existed in what is now Israel since early Ottoman times and through the British Mandate, and were recognized by the State of Israel upon its founding in 1948.

L.A. councilman's proposal targets companies seeking work on Trump's planned border wall
[LATimes] Companies that do business with the city of Los Angeles would have to disclose if they also have contracts to work on President Trump’s proposed border wall under a motion unveiled Thursday.

City Councilman Gil Cedillo’s proposal would require prospective and existing contractors to state "under affidavit" whether they have any contracts for building Trump’s U.S.-Mexico border wall.

Companies from around the country are bidding to build the wall, which Trump made a rallying point in his presidential campaign.

Cedillo, who opposes the wall, said at a news conference that his motion is about "transparency."

"I would hope that those who want to do business with us share our values and understand the importance of a city that is significantly immigrant, that the foundation of our economy is immigrant, that our social fabric is immigrant," Cedillo said.
They just can't bring themselves to differentiate between legal and illegal immigration.
Members of the City Council, all but one of whom are registered Democrats, have taken on Trump’s policies before.

The council passed a resolution last week asking Congress to investigate whether Trump violated the Constitution’s foreign emoluments clause or committed any other high crimes and misdemeanors that could lead to impeachment. The clause is designed to ensure that presidents aren’t influenced by gifts or aid from a foreign government.
I wonder how many gifts Cedillo has received from the Mexican government.
The council also backed a proposal in February barring city employees from helping the federal government create a registry based on religion or spiritual faith.

Tom Holsman, chief executive of the Associated General Contractors of California, criticized the Cedillo and Lara proposals, calling them part of a "new overreaching by cities and states."

Punishing or making public companies that are working on the border wall hurts companies and their employees, Holsman said. Two companies that belong to the contractors group recently withdrew from the wall bidding process amid concerns over backlash, Holsman added.

Gary Toebben, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, said it was "inappropriate" for the city to ask companies about bids on other projects and make a "value judgment" about the qualifications of the bidder.

"This precedent could lead to an endless number of litmus-test questions based on the personal preferences of City Council members," Toebben said. "We strongly discourage the City Council from adding this precedent to the public bidding process."

How much do you want to give them? Arizona? New Mexico? Nevada? Colorado? Texas? Where does it stop? IMHO, the way to deal with the Cedillos and the Laras of this state is for the federal government to slap them down each and every time they get out of line. If they pass unconstitutional law then get the courts to throw them out. If they break the law then lock them up. If their friends, family and business associates are here illegally then deport them. By all means, cut their funding. No more block grants. No more research grants. And, yes, I would scrutinize very closely their contacts with the Mexican government.

#6  I hope it turns out that way, Abu, but CA politicians look determined to commit suicide:

California Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget proposal includes tens of millions of dollars for the legal defense of illegal immigrants.

The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday that the budget would include a total of $33 million in state government assistance to illegal immigrants.

These funds, however, are not enough for some Democrats in the state who seek to launch new programs. Democratic legislators have proposed three separate bills that impact legal training, start a legal defense program and increase counsel for deported veterans. These proposals add up to more than $26 million.

ICJ has no jurisdiction to hear Kulbhushan Jadhav's conviction case, says Pakistan
[DAWN] The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday heard the case brought to it by India pertaining to the sentencing of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was handed a death sentence by a Pak Field General Court Martial (FGCM) last month.

Ambassador Moazzam Ahmad Khan, Dr Muhammad Faisal and Syed Faraz Hussain were present at the Peace Palace as members of Pakistain's legal team.

Khawar Qureshi led Pakistain's arguments, while Asad Rahim Khan and Joseph Dyke were present on Pakistain's behalf for the proceedings in The Hague.

Presenting its arguments before the court, Pakistain maintained that the ICJ did not have jurisdiction to hear the Indian application, Radio Pakistain, the state-run broadcasting service, reported.

The arguments for Pakistain were presented by Dr Faisal to the court in The Hague, Netherlands, on Monday.

There has also been a series of Arclight airstrikes mainly on Sabri, the city’s second surviving Islamist stronghold and an kaboom at an LNA arms dump.

The LNA has given no details of the fighting nor of casualties on either side. Roads surrounding both the besieged downtown districts remain closed to civilian traffic and troops have been warning residents close to the front lines to leave their homes.

Meanwhile there are unconfirmed reports of a substantial kaboom in the south of the city at a Saiqa Special Forces
...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. It now numbers a few thousand and reports to the Ministry of Defence. It deployed in Benghazi in an attempt to control the carnage. As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group...
weapons dump. An army source said the blast at Nuwagiya had been caused by the heat. Yet munitions are often poorly stored and in the past this has caused other kabooms.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
sabotage cannot be ruled out. On the eve of the third anniversary celebrations of the start of the Dignity (Karama) operation against Benghazi’s hard boy Islamists, some sort of attempted spectacular attack is expected.

Benghazi police emergency unit commander killed: rogue Saiqa members accused
[Libya Herald] A commander of Benghazi’s police emergency response unit, the najdah, was killed in the early hours of the morning when gunnies attacked his vehicle near the unit’s headquarters in the city’s Birkah district.

Captain Musa Yunis al-Majbri, married with three children, is said to have been rubbed out following an altercation with a number of men in a small convoy, some of whom were said to be in military uniform, others in civilian clothing.

Allegations that elements from Saiqa special forces were to blame have been denied by the brigade. In a statement, it says that the killing appears to have been related to a private feud. An investigation has been launched into what happened, it adds. It also warns social media activists against using the story to attack the brigade and trying to cause dissension among those fighting against terrorism.

This was not the first time that a unit of the najdah forces, part of Benghazi Security Directorate, was attacked. There was a similar incident last week, but there were no injuries on that occasion.
