If Trump destroys GOP, he may take DNC down with him
h/t Instapundit
If the Republican Party dies, will it take the Democrats with it?

George Will, among others, predicts that if Donald Trump wins the nomination and the presidency -- the first, not much of an "if" after Indiana, the second quite a large one -- it will destroy the Republican Party. I think he's probably right, though it depends what you mean by "destroy." There would still be something called the Republican Party under a President Trump; it just won't be the same anymore.

This sort of thing happens all the time in business and entertainment. 3M started out as a mining company; now it makes sticky notes (and seemingly a trillion other things). Maybe giving Trump the lead vocals of the GOP will be like when Van Halen replaced David Lee Roth with Sammy Hagar -- not the same band, but pretty successful all the same.

That’s a bad analogy, of course. Because Hagar was a good frontman with the full support of his band. Give Trump the mic, and a lot of the most talented people in the Republican Party will drop their instruments and walk off the stage.

But a lot of new people might like the show. The Trump campaign points to all the working-class Democrats and independents flocking to his message, nowhere more so than in Indiana on Tuesday. If they're successful, the GOP won't be the party of limited government and free markets anymore.
Unlike it was until now?
Instead, it will be more like a party of a kind of statist white-identity politics, of the sort that is common across much of Europe. White folks can play the multiculturalism game, too.

...Whether Trump destroys or merely transforms the GOP, the net effect could be the same: Both parties could lose their reliable rationale for existence. That kind of creative destruction could leave a vacuum for one or more new parties to fill the void.

#1  The death is not a sudden thing, it's been going on for some time. I stopped sending the state GOP and national GOP panhandlers money years ago. I support specific candidates, and they can lose that support with a single bad choice. Ask Pat Toomey. Signed up for Manchin's gun grab and I tagged Toomey's fundraising emails as junk and toss his snail mailings directly in the no-sort recycle bin before I even come in from getting the mail.

#2  A salient point:

The Democratic Party thrived under FDR, but it shriveled under Obama... There are many reasons for this, but one is particularly relevant. Obama lost the traditional heart of the Democratic Party: the white working class. In fairness, the Democrats’ trouble with blue-collar whites pre-dates Obama, but Obama accelerated the process. In 2012, he lost this group by 26 points (62%-36%). Trump is winning with those votes.

DoJ program to no longer use '€˜disparaging' terms 'felons' and 'convicts'
[Wash Times] The Justice Department’s Office of Justice Programs is eschewing the terms "felon" and "convict" when officials refer to individuals convicted of crimes, opting instead for less "disparaging labels," Assistant Attorney General Karol Mason announced Wednesday.

The Office of Justice Programs plans to substitute terminology such as "person who committed a crime" and "individual who was incarcerated" in speeches and other communications as part of an effort to remove barriers that officials say hinder progress of those who re-enter society after completing their prison sentences.

"I have come to believe that we have a responsibility to reduce not only the physical but also the psychological barriers to reintegration," Ms. Mason wrote Wednesday in a guest post for The Washington Post. "The labels we affix to those who have served time can drain their sense of self-worth and perpetuate a cycle of crime, the very thing reentry programs are designed to prevent."

The announcement follows a series of initiatives introduced as part of the Justice Department’s first National Reentry Week, through which law enforcement officials hope to reduce recidivism by changing features of the criminal justice system.

A criminal record can prevent people from obtaining employment, housing, higher education or credit, the Justice Department noted.

Illegal immigrant numbers skyrocket at Mexican border
[The Hill] Child migration is surging again.

The number of families and unaccompanied children apprehended on the southern border has skyrocketed this year, according to new figures from the Obama administration.

The numbers, compiled by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), reveal that child migration is on par with 2014 levels, when a wave of kids ‐‐ thousands of them unaccompanied ‐‐ arrived at the southern border.

The surge of illegal immigration quickly swamped border authorities, immigration courts and health and humanitarian workers, while sparking a political battle on Capitol Hill over the cause and proper response to the crisis.

The new figures raise the specter of another increase this summer. That would almost certainly inflame another political showdown in a volatile presidential year in which the issues of race, immigration and border security have been pronounced -- particularly due to the hard-line enforcement approach adopted by the presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.

Rush: 'Trump Is Gonna Win, Beat the Hildebeest Badly'
[Daily Caller] Rush Limbaugh says that Donald Trump "is gonna win, beat Hillary [Clinton] badly... it could be landslide proportions."

During Wednesday’s "The Rush Limbaugh Show," the day after Trump all but clinched the Republican nomination, Limbaugh said, "The only reason Hillary Clinton’s gonna win [the Democratic nomination] is because the Democrats have rigged that system for her according to their rules, where she’s gonna get all the delegates or however many she needs to win this no matter what the election returns in every Democrat primary are. Now, the Democrats are making the same mistake here that some may have made in the Cruz campaign."

The Democrats "think that Hillary can go ahead and lose these states, lose every state. She’s losing more than she wins. If you follow the news, it’s clear Bernie Sanders is winning (it seems like) every primary the past month. And accompanying every Bernie Sanders victory story is the fact that he won nothing, that Hillary gets the delegates. So there’s just as many -- or proportionally just as many -- agitated Democrats. You add up people supporting Bernie Sanders to people supporting Donald Trump, and the people that supported Ted Cruz [ garble ] You add up those voters -- and if they all vote, too, Hillary Clinton doesn’t have a prayer."

"I don’t care about the Electoral College. I don’t care about anything else. Just like in terms of the people that are fed up with Washington and the establishment, as we sit here today, she is the lone candidate representing what obviously so many Americans, Republicans and Democrats for their own reasons right now happen to despise," Limbaugh argued. Clinton is "losing the vote in every state, and yet the Democrats expect her to triumph. Where is her momentum?"

Europe
Switzerland Proposes Barbed Wire Fence Along Italian Border
[Breitbart] Andreas Glarner, the specialist on asylum policy for the ruling Swiss People’s Party (UDC), has asked local municipalities to stop accepting any further asylum-seekers and proposed the use of barbed wire at the border.
Fences don't work -- just ask the Democrats...
The UDC, which picked up the majority of seats in the Federal Assembly last October, has suggested that not all asylum applications should be processed. "Faced with such mass migration, we must accept that it is not possible to examine all requests," Glarner said. "Systematic checks at customs would have serious repercussions for immigration."

Since for all intents and purposes France and Austria have closed their borders, the focus is on Italy. "We are facing a flood of asylum-seekers," said the Swiss political daily Tages Anzeiger. "The only gateway to Europe passes through Italy. No one wants to stay in Italy, so everyone will come to Switzerland."

Three weeks ago, Switzerland announced it was considering stationing a tank battalion at its southern border with Italy, just after news that Austria is considering shutting down the Brenner Pass between Italy and Austria.

Switzerland declared it is weighing the option of posting tanks to secure its own border with Italy. "We expect a significant increase in the number of refugees this summer. If Austria now closes off the Brenner Pass, Switzerland will become the only gateway to Northern Europe. Before that, we have to protect ourselves," said Norman Gobbi, the security director of the Swiss Canton of Ticino.

As other migrant routes become more restricted or close altogether, Italy is becoming increasingly the path of choice for migrants coming both from the south and from the east. Heading north through Italy, if Austria no longer becomes an option, "many will then travel to Switzerland," Gobbi said.

According to Gobbi, migrants increasingly cross the border between Italy and Switzerland illegally. "The refugees mainly take routes outside of the official border crossings. We must prepare ourselves for a possible migrant onslaught," he said.

During the first part of this year Italy has taken in 50 percent more refugees than during the same period in 2015, and the Italian government is forecasting the total number of migrants this year to be double that of last year. "This will not be without consequences for Switzerland," said Gobbi.

The region has some 2,000 soldiers of the Swiss Tank Battalion at the ready, and they have been asked to postpone vacations in order to be available as needs may arise.

#4  From 1990-1995, I was the Counterdrug Coordinator and then Task Force Commander for the Cal Guard supporting Counterdrug Operations throughout the state. When we were in discussions with the US Border Patrol in 1992 about the initial construction of the border fence in San Diego and eventually parts of Imperial County, we discussed a number of options to improve Border Enforcement for drug smuggling interdiction operations. Coincidental to that obviously was the impact on illegal immigration. Physical barriers like a wall, wire and anti-vehicle obstacles, as well as improved road network, all were planned to channelize the pedestrian and vehicle incursions into engagement areas to allow the USBP to concentrate resources and increase effectiveness.
In the end we transformed dramatically the nature of the 13 mile San Diego Sector, driving the vast majority of trafficking eastward into the Smith Valley and beyond.
I pains me no end to see the silly canard that a wall cannot stop immigration because people can climb over it, the implication being that a fix must be 100% or it is worthless. Its all about enhanced enforcement percentages at the border, to allow the interior enforcement options to handle the overflow, and not be overwhelmed with primary apprehensions above their manning levels.
Build a wall, enhance the use of E-Verify, link Social Security filings to enforcement by CBP, detail locals to handle the backlog of deportation cases, prosecute those who employ illegals knowingly, rid the public welfare and Medicaid roles of illegals (50% of whom are on some form of public assistance according to the most recent FAIR reporting), control remittances to Mexico and beyond, and a huge number will self-deport home, and the flow will stop when they see no advantage to overcoming the obstacles to coming here. (sorry for the long rant)

9 Muslim Albanians jailed for recruiting for terror groups
[Ynet] An Albanian court has sentenced nine Muslims to jail terms ranging from seven to 18 years for inciting terror, recruiting and sending more than 70 men to join rebel groups in Syria.

The Tirana court on Wednesday said that the men, including three preachers, were convicted of recruiting, training and inciting hatred, mainly in the capital, Tirana, from two mosques that were not recognized by the country's Muslim community.

Their family members said they will appeal.

About two-thirds of Albania's 3.2 million residents are Muslims. Mainstream religious leaders have asked their believers not to join rebel groups in Syria. Still, scores of Albanians are believed to have joined Islamic murderous Moslem groups in Syria and Iraq.

Clashes as French Police Clear Migrants Occupying Paris School Undergoing Renovation
[AnNahar] Police used tear gas on Wednesday to disperse protesters as they evacuated a high school under renovation in Gay Paree that has been occupied by migrants colonists for two weeks.

Protesters, some masked and hooded, had formed a human chain around the high school in the north of the French capital to try to prevent police entering in the early morning raid.

Demonstrators pelted the police with objects and chanted "everyone hates the police", an AFP journalist saw.

Police entered the school by forcing their way in through another door where tables and chairs were piled up to try to block their passage.

"This morning the police gassed us and pushed us out of the way. At midnight we built a barrier of tables and chairs, but they moved it all out of the way," said Emmanuel, a Ghanaian in his 20s who left the school when the police entered.

"It's better here than being on the street," he said. "I don't know where they want to take us."

The school is currently closed for renovation works and it was empty when 150 migrants colonists occupied part of the building on April 21-22.

WH: Navy SEAL Was ‘Killed in Combat,’ But ‘Not in a Combat Mission’
More on this story from yesterday.
[CNSNEWS] A Navy SEAL killed during an Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS/ISIS) attack in Iraq was "killed in combat," White House press secretary Josh Earnest acknowledged Tuesday, but was "not in a combat mission."
And the despicable, odious, lickspittle bitc* Earnest would know about 'combat missions' how ?
The serviceman, identified as Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Charlie Keating IV, was the third member of the U.S. armed forces to be killed in combat since President B.O. sent troops back into Iraq to advise, train and equip local forces, three years after the formal U.S. withdrawal was completed.

Keating was killed when ISIS attacked a Kurdish peshmerga position some two or three miles behind the front line in northern Iraq, according to the Pentagon.

"This is an individual who is not in a combat mission, but he was in a dangerous place," Earnest told a daily briefing. "And his position came under ‐ under attack. He was armed, trained and prepared to defend himself."

"Unfortunately, he was killed. And he was killed in combat, but that was not a part of his mission," he continued. "His mission was specifically to offer advice and assistance to those Iraqi forces that were fighting for their own country."

#1  So it wasn't combat combat. And even though he was killed in combat, he is not a casualty. Because he wasn't on a combat mission. Which means he doesn't affect the stats. Are we clear?

#4  So, a workplace accident?
Posted by: Pappy || 05/05/2016 8:59 Comments || Top||

#5  Mr. Earnest your boss is directly responsible...and this statement is what you offer the family? You get up there and talk about Flint, Mich first and then act peeved that the SecDef stated that SO1 Keating died in combat.

Let me tell you what his family heard...you referred to him as an "individual" not as what he is...a SEAL...and he certainly not there by himself, he was with his team who are all armed, trained and ready to do harm to others in defense of our nation...not sent as some prospective victim into a "dangerous place." It was not a matter of fortune ("unfortunately he was killed") that he sacrificed himself and his family and SEAL family also sacrificed...he was not merely "killed" by an unfortunate accident. You state that "he was killed in combat, but that was not part of his mission" ? Well, it was not "fortune" that ordered him on this mission...it was Obama. The president's actions and poor policy have grave consequences for those that serve and sacrifice. I guess it was SO1 Keating's fault that he was outside of his mission, that he failed to defend himself, that the SecDef called it combat, that you are inconvenienced and have to tell us unsophisticated vets how it really is. Well, we the unsophisticated understand sacrifice, not your mealy mouthed pathetic semantics.

SO1 Keating sacrificed. His family sacrificed. His team sacrificed. It was not in vain. We will not forget their sacrifice.

Sorry about the PTSD rant, although I did edit out all the cussing that is going on in my head.

Sorry Mr. limp dick spokesperson.... if you are being shot at by the enemy, you are in combat. The SEALs held the line while the enemy advanced in force. Along with air power, guts and the liberal expenditure of ammunition they stopped Daesh cold. So it was fucking combat you walking jizz waste.

Kurdish rebels attack Iranian Revolutionary Guards in Sardasht
[ARA News] ERBIL ــ Under the banner “the Peshmerga of Iranian Kurdistan”, a Kurdish rebel group attacked key positions for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in several villages in the vicinity of the mainly Kurdish city of Sardasht north-west of the country, informed sources reported on Wednesday.

Local Kurdish activists confirmed that the Kurdish Peshmerga in Iran attacked headquarters of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the villages of Hamran, Myouni, and Sartaja [administratively linked to the township of Sardasht]. This led the Iranian forces to receive additional military reinforcements to the region in a bid to face the unexpected fierce offensive.

There were reports about the involvement of the Iranian air force in targeting the fighting positions of the rebel group, according to Kurdish sources.

The commander of the military wing of the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) in Iran, Hossein Yazdan Banna, had announced earlier that the Kurdish force will soon resume its military operations against the Iranian government forces, pointing out that “Iran is to face a wide armed uprising”.

“After a break of ten years, our armed cells in the Iranian Kurdistan, namely the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), began their military operations against Iranian forces,” Banna said in a statement last Friday.

Speaking to ARA News in Tehran, Kurdish journalist Behrouz Kermanshah said: “Rassuming the fight against Iran has come late but it was inevitable; the situation in eastern Kurdistan (Iranian Kurdistan) has become unbearable, especially with the daily arbitrary executions against the Kurds.”

“Iranian authorities continue their campaign of arrests and harassment against our people in the eastern part of Kurdistan,” he said.

Kermanshah expressed his fear that “the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) may hinder the PAK-led operations against Iranian authorities due to the PKK’s good relations with Tehran which provides the group [PKK] with remarkable support, especially in Syrian Kurdistan.”

Kurdish organizations and political parties say that the Iranian authorities are cracking down on the Kurds in Iran and prevent them from practicing their legitimate national rituals and cultural rights.

Bangladesh
Four sentenced for 1971 ‘war crimes’
[DAWN] A special war crimes court in Bangladesh sentenced four men to death on Tuesday for killing, torture, arson and looting during the 1971 war.

The ruling is likely to aggravate the divide between moderates and holy warriors in the country which is grappling with a wave of deadly assaults targeting atheist writers, religious minorities and political activists.

The court, accused by rights groups of holding flawed proceedings, said the four were involved in the deaths of nine people. Only one suspect, Shamsuddin Ahmed, was in court for the verdict.

Authorities are still hunting for Gazi Abdul Mannan, Hafiz Uddin, and Shamsuddin Ahmed’s brother, Nasiruddin. The three-judge tribunal also sentenced a fifth man to life in prison.

Russia to Deploy Troops to Counter Growing NATO Presence
[VOA News] Russia says it will deploy three divisions of troops along its borders to counter NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and organization....
's increasing military presence in Eastern Europe.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday after a meeting in Moscow that the new divisions will be stationed along Russia’s western and southern borders.

"The Defense Ministry is taking a series of measures aimed at countering the buildup of NATO forces in close proximity to Russian borders. By the end of the year, two new military divisions will be formed in the Western Military district and one in the Southern Military District. At the moment, facilities construction is being carried out at the sites where these units will be deployed," he said.

Shoigu gave no details about the size and timing of the new Russian deployment, or where the troops would be stationed. He first mentioned the plan to create three new divisions back in January, and Russian media reports at the time estimated up to 30,000 troops would be involved.

Afghanistan
16 killed in two separate explosions in Badghis province of Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least 16 people were killed in two separate kabooms in northwestern Badghis province of Afghanistan, local officials said.

The first incident took place on Wednesday morning in Bala Murghab district after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) targeted a group of youths as they were on their way to an opium field for labor work.

The second incident took place hours after the first blast and targeted another group of youths in Qads district, leaving at least 11 people dead.

According to the local officials, the young men were going to lance the opium when they were targeted by IEDs planted by anti-government armed bad boy groups.

No group including the Taliban forces of Evil has so far grabbed credit behind the two kabooms.

Talibs and forces of Evil belonging to the other bad boy groups are frequently using Improvised Explosive Device (IED) as the weapon of their choice to target the security force.

The IEDs are the main contributors to the casualties of the Afghan cops but are also considered as a key factor in growing civilian casualties.

At least 600 non-combatants were killed and 1,343 others were maimed in the first quarter of 2016, the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said in its latest report.

UNAMA further added that consistent with 2015 trends, ground engagements caused the highest number of total civilian casualties, followed by improvised bombs (IEDs), complex and suicide kabooms, as well as assassination'>assassinations.

According to UNAMA, actions by Anti-Government Elements caused at least 60 per cent of casualties while Pro-Government Forces caused at least 19 per cent

Journalists' protests a 'further threat to Sisi'
[AA.TR] A raid on Egypt’s journalists’ union head office this week could intensify opposition to President Abdel Fattah el Sisi, according to analysts.

On Sunday, police stormed the headquarters of the press syndicate in Cairo, arresting two journalists for allegedly inciting protests and plotting to overthrow the government.

Union officials condemned the raid as a "blatant assault on journalists’ dignity" and have called for the dismissal of the interior minister.

The syndicate was at the center of protests on April 25 over the government’s decision to hand over two Red Sea islands to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
. The union said more than 40 journalists were nabbed
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
and assaulted during the protest.

Saed Sadek, an academic at the American University in Cairo, said a "revolution against the regime and its violations" could be sparked if other unions joined journalists against the government.

He said previous protests by labor unions, such as that which followed police assaults on two doctors in January, had failed to gain momentum. The demonstration by medics on Feb. 12 was the biggest since the 2013 military coup that unseated President Mohammed Morsi, Egypt’s first freely elected president.

Sadek said protests by journalists could have a "critical impact on public opinion" amid Egypt’s current economic crisis.

Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, officials said Wednesday night that Israeli troops operating within the Gazoo Strip had begun pulling out of the territory in a bid to restore calm.

It was the first statement indicating that the IDF had in fact been operating beyond the border fence over the past hours, as several exchanges of fire were reported between the sides throughout the day.

Israel has denied Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, claims that it presented a withdrawal agreement from the Gazoo security perimeter on the condition that the Paleostinians cease to fire at Israeli targets. Senior officials told Ynet that they are unaware of any such IDF agreement.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Greenfield: Kerry warns Assad to step down or he'll make more empty threats
[FrontPageMagazine] Breathes there a dictator anywhere in the world who actually fears Kerry? Assad had dinner with Kerry back when the Dems had doubled down on the treason thing. On top of that, Kerry has been issuing empty threats to Syria while being overruled by Obama for a while now. If there's anyone whom no one is afraid of, it's John Kerry.

So by all means...

Secretary of State John Kerry warned Syria’s government and its backers in Moscow and Tehran on Tuesday that they face an August deadline for starting a political transition to move President Bashar Assad out, or they risk the consequences of a new U.S. approach toward ending the 5-year-old civil war.

Sure. If Syria and Iran don't comply...

1. Obama will start giving Iran slightly fewer billions of dollars

2. Kerry will put on his saddest face and say, "Pretty please, Mr. Dictator"

3. Obama will go back to doing all the stupid stuff that didn't work before, but he'll also warn that Assad is on the wrong side of history

Pick your terrifying consequences, please.

“If Assad does not adhere to this, there will clearly be repercussions,” Kerry warned. “One of them may be the total destruction of the cease-fire and then go back to war. I don’t think Russia wants that. I don’t think Assad is going to benefit from that. There may be even other repercussions being discussed. That is for the future.”

That would be inconvenient for Russia since the non-existent ceasefire is helping it gain advantage in the war. Just think what the war would be like if there were no ceasefire.

“If Assad’s strategy is to somehow think he’s going to just carve out Aleppo and carve out a section of the country, I got news for you and for him: This war doesn’t end,” Kerry said.

“As long as Assad is there, the opposition is not going to stop fighting,” he said.

That also holds true if Assad leaves. Or if Kerry declares himself Queen of Syria. About the only thing that could stop everyone in Syria from fighting is a giant asteroid.

But maybe next time Johnny's in Damascus, Assad can take him out to dinner again. Dictator's treat.

The special forces stormed an ISIS training camp in the town of Janaale, 110Km south west of Mogadishu, where they killed a number of militants in the ensuing firefight, according to a statement by SNA’s commando unit.

“The commandos have managed to kill 12 ISIL fighters, including a top foreign Jihadist and capture several others alive during the special operation in Janaale town,” read the statement, adding that an ISIL training camp was destroyed in the commando attack.

Six Lahore schools closed for the day after bomb hoax
LAHORE: At least six schools in various parts of the city were evacuated and closed for the day following a series of hoax calls about a bomb threat on Wednesday, police said.

The guards of two schools in Gulshan-i-Ravi ─ Government Girls' High School in G block and Saeeda Butt Private School ─ were alerted of a threat by a motorcyclist, after which the administration was informed and a call was made to 15 around 10:55am. The school was evacuated following the hoax, school sources said.

Government Boys High School in Chandni Chowk Sanda, Himayat-i-Islam school near Yateem Khana Chowk and two other schools in the Millat Park and Township areas were also alerted of threats, police officials confirmed.

Fear and panic spread following the hoaxes, with students trying to evacuate as swiftly as possible. Concerned parents also reached schools to pick their children up. The schools that received hoax calls were closed for the day.

Superintendent Police Iqbal Town Shaista Nadeem told Dawn, "Five or six calls were received [on 15] but no bomb was found. We even sent a Bomb Disposal Squad team to search them. We will identify the callers and arrest the people responsible."

Parents and students across the country have been edgy following the attack on Bacha Khan University in January, which brought back memories of the tragic Army Public School attack.

Death in custody
[DAWN] WITH unbridled powers comes the inevitability of abuse. That symbiotic link has been illustrated, gruesomely and assertively, with the death on Tuesday of Aftab Ahmed, senior member of the MQM and Dr Farooq Sattar’s aide.

He was being held by the Rangers in preventive detention for 90 days, having been nabbed
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
by the law-enforcement agency barely 48 hours earlier.

The Rangers’ claim that Ahmed had been brought alive to the hospital suffering from chest pains and had died after 25 minutes of admission stood in stark contrast to the hospital authorities’ statement that the patient had "no pulse and no blood pressure" on arrival.

It indicates the extent to which the paramilitary force will distort facts to protect itself from blame, although a 42-year-old detainee dying of a heart attack -- that too so soon after being taken into custody -- should in itself be cause for investigation.

Shocking images of Ahmed’s brutalised body that soon emerged on social media left little doubt as to what the dear departed had been subjected to while in jug, a fact that the DG Rangers himself had to later concede.

Turkey, Saudi Arabia unlikely to launch ground operations in Syria: Lavrov
Turkey and Saudi Arabia are unlikely to launch ground operations in Syria in the light of Russian air forces already stationed in the country, RIA news agency cited Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on May 4.

Speaking about the crisis in Syria, Lavrov said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is not an ally for Russia to the extent Turkey is for the United States.

“Assad is not an ally for us. Yes, we support him in the fight against terror and in preserving the Syrian state,” he told RIA in an interview. “But he is not an ally in the sense Turkey is an ally for the United States.”

Lavrov said Russia sees Syria peace talks in Geneva resuming this month but the right conditions had not yet been met for direct negotiations due to the “whims” of the opposition High Negotiations Committee and other countries including Turkey. Lavrov also said a meeting of the International Syria Support Group could be convened in the coming weeks.

President Fox Apologizes, Invites Trump to Mexico
This is why it's a very bad idea for outside officials to publicly declare opinions before we've made our decision. A great many others may also find themselves in the same position, regardless who wins.
[BREITBART] During an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, former Mexican President Vicente Fox apologized Wednesday for the vulgar language he has used regarding GOP frontrunner Donald Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the southern border and invited the likely Republican nominee to Mexico to see the border from the other side.

Earlier this year, Fox said that he would not pay for Trump’s "f*cking wall," and called Trump ""Ignorant ... crazy ... egocentric ... nasty ... [a] false prophet." Trump then called on Fox to apologize.

On Wednesday, he did so -- in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News -- and added that he wanted Trump to come to Mexico to see the border from the other side.

"I apologize. Forgiveness is one of the greatest qualities that human beings have, is the quality of a compassionate leader. You have to be humble. You have to be compassionate. You have to love thy neighbor," Fox explained to Breitbart News while sitting in the hotel of the J.W. Marriott in Santa Monica, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, on Wednesday afternoon.

"Love your nation. Love the world," he added. "Yes, I’m humble enough as leadership be, [a] compassionate leader. If I offended you, I’m sorry. But what about the other way around?"

"I don’t think he should follow the strategy of attacking others, offending others, to get to his purpose. There are other ways and means of doing it," Fox stressed, adding, "I invite him to come to Mexico and to see what Mexico is all about."

Fox stressed the important trade ties the two countries have, noting that the U.S. benefits from Mexican labor and has much larger trade deficits with other countries.

He urged Trump to be more responsible, and suggested that he could help: "I can convince him to think intelligently" about trade and other issues, he explained.

Makhtar Diokhané arrived at the Dakar airport escorted by Niger’s elite security team.

The Senegalese authorities had requested Niamey to extradite the terror suspect upon arrest in Niger in November 2015.

Security sources
At the time of his arrest last year, Niger security sources said Diokhoné was planning to cross into Nigeria to reunite with the Boko Haram terror group with huge sums of money, including fake currencies.

Upon arrival at the Dakar international airport, Diokhané was handed over to the Senegalese authorities and whisked away to the barracks near the city centre.

Shortly before Diokhané beat feet from Senegal last year, security sources alleged that they had gathered enough evidence linking him to the Boko Haram Islamists.

His wife
Following his arrest in Niger, the Senegalese anti-terrorism agents seized other suspects, including his wife.

Diokhané’s wife is alleged to be the spiritual guide of the radical Dahira, an Islamic prayer group, and she allegedly received huge sums of money from an undisclosed source to fund similar other groups.

Arabia
Yemeni Insurgents Recruit Thousands of Children
Jeddah- National Yemeni army officials revealed that Houthi militia and other insurgent allies following the ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh have recruited over 48 thousand minors inside Sanaa over the past few days.

Unlike other waves of recruitment, being run across other governorates, the Sanaa youth enrollment is for establishing a score of trained military brigades which are supervised by foreigners.

Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, officials confirm that militias have exploited the current ceasefire in many cities and governorates to launch a mass obligatory recruitment imposed on all shades to the social spectrum.

Many schools and colleges in each of Sanaa, Al Hudaydah and Dhamar have been transformed into military barracks and others into Shi’ite places devoted to religious rituals, officials reported.

Civil buildings are being misused and transformed into training camps for militias that would be later dispatched to join battlefronts against the Yemeni national army.

Brig. Gen Abdullah al-Subaihi, leader of the 15 MICA brigade and commander of the north-eastern front of Aden, told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that Houthi militias and the Republican Guard (military guard loyal to the ousted Yemeni President Saleh) – since the launch of ceasefire- have been preparing , rearranging their forces and redistributing power on several fronts. They attempt to break through the lines of the national army.

Brig. Al-Subaihi gave emphasis to the fact that the minor members recruited are being approached in different ways, some were deluded with hatred and others were pressured by militias going after their guardian caretakers. Militias aim at exploiting youth in the upcoming period, after sparking clashes in main cities where the national army is centralized.

Brig. Al-Subaihi reassures that the national army is prepared for all possibilities, and is maintaining vigilance over all fronts.

Sisi says ‘Western’ human rights values don’t apply in Egypt
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Egypt’s president said on Wednesday that issues of human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
and civil liberties in his country should not be approached from a "Western perspective," due to domestic and regional conditions, days after authorities detained two journalists.

Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi told this to a US congressional delegation visiting Cairo, his front man said in an official statement carried by local paper al-Ahram.

Sisi also told the US delegation, which was headed by the chairman of the US House Committee on Homeland Security Michael McCaul, that the Egyptian government was committed to the rule of law and upholding the values of democracy.

According to Sisi’s front man, the meeting involved talks on volatile countries in the region. The Egyptian president also warned of the consequences of the "fall of nation states" in the Middle East, and its impact on the rise of holy warrior groups, al-Ahram reported.

President Biya was speaking at a presser held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on Wednesday after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Cameroonian leader also denied reports that his country had harboured snuffies and wanted to withdraw from the fight against Boko Haram.

On his part, President Buhari told news hounds he was grateful to the Chad Basin Commission, the Multi-National Joint Task Force and the G7 countries for the support they gave Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram.

Last year President Buhari was in Cameroon for a similar visit to discuss ways of effectively tackling the Islamist group.

In a communique at the end of their meeting, they reaffirmed their continuous commitment to the fight against Boko Haram until they were finally exterminated from their countries.

They appraised the success recorded so far and pledged their readiness to work with each other in economic and infrastructural development.

The joint communique was presented by the Foreign Affairs Ministers of Nigeria, Geofrey Onyeama and his Cameroonian counterpart.

Researchers: Medical errors now third leading cause of death in United States
[WAPO] Nightmare stories of nurses giving potent drugs meant for one patient to another and surgeons removing the wrong body parts have dominated recent headlines about medical care. Lest you assume those cases are the exceptions, a new study by patient safety researchers provides some context.

Their analysis, published in the BMJ on Tuesday, shows that "medical errors" in hospitals and other health care facilities are incredibly common and may now be the third leading cause of death in the United States -- claiming 251,000 lives every year, more than respiratory disease, accidents, stroke and Alzheimer's.

Martin Makary, a professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who led the research, said in an interview that the category includes everything from bad doctors to more systemic issues such as communication breakdowns when patients are handed off from one department to another.

"It boils down to people dying from the care that they receive rather than the disease for which they are seeking care," Makary said.

US, Russia create fresh truce in northern Syria
[AA.TR] The U.S. and Russia have reached agreement to bring a halt to renewed fighting around Aleppo in northern Syria, the U.S. State Department said Wednesday.

"As part of our urgent efforts to de-escalate violence in Syria and reaffirm the cessation of hostilities nationwide, the United States and Russia concluded arrangements late yesterday to extend this effort to Aleppo province, including Aleppo city and its surrounding areas," front man Mark Toner said in a statement.

The deal came into effect on Tuesday night and violence had decreased since, Toner said, although there have been reports of continued fighting in some areas.

Toner said the U.S.’s objective remained a cessation of hostilities "covering all of Syria".

He added: "We are determined to reaffirm the cessation of hostilities across Syria and will continue expanding this effort."

A truce was arranged by the U.S. and Russia in February in a bid to deescalate the five-year conflict and pave the way for peace talks in Geneva between the regime and opposition.

However,
if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning...
Bashir al-Assad’s forces violated the deal with Arclight airstrikes and ground attacks.

On Friday, the U.S. and Russia agreed to reinforce a short-term cease-fire in cities where attacks on civilians had risen.

Toner said all parties to the truce were expected to "abide fully by the renewed cessation in Aleppo and throughout the entire country" and insisted on the immediate halt to attacks on civilians.

He also called on Moscow to use its influence with the regime. "It is critical that Russia redouble its efforts to influence the regime to abide fully by the cessation," Toner said.

Ghani's War Orders Not Given
A number of military officials in Helmand province said on Wednesday that despite a surge in violence in Helmand province, President Ashraf Ghani has still to give the orders for a large scale offensive operation against the Taliban.‎

But provincial governor Hayatullah Hayat says plans are underway to launch a wide scale operation across the province.

"Our planning is underway, and soon, this week, our operations will be conducted and all the people support security forces in Helmand," said Hayat.

But TOLOnews correspondents Wali Arian and Abdullah Hamim spoke to security forces in Helmand province who said that the troops are unhappy about having to take a defensive position against the Taliban.

They said troops have called for the launch of an offensive operation as soon as possible.

"See at the moment war is going on and firing sounds can be heard," said Nagibullah, a border police force member.

"The front line of Taliban was in Nad Ali district of Helmand province where we defeated them and we will defeat them always," said Jabar, a public order solider.

According to TOLOnews' correspondents, Dasht Matkai area of Nad Ali district is the front line of the battle with Taliban. They said the insurgents are also holed up in civilian houses, which they are using to fire on security forces' strongholds.

"Some times militants attack and open fire but we are also equipped and prepared," said Marstyal another public order soldier.

"In Marja district small operations are underway but big operations will be prepared in wide and joint plans," said Khalilurahman Jawad a public order commander.

But some provincial council members have raised concerns over Ghani's failure to implement his own war orders against the Taliban.

"The president is different in action and speech and he is not putting his words into practice and it means he is kicking dust in people's eyes," said Karim Attal Helmand provincial council head.

Romanian hacker Guccifer: I breached Clinton server, 'it was easy'
The infamous Romanian hacker known as “Guccifer,” speaking exclusively with Fox News, claimed he easily – and repeatedly – breached former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s personal email server in early 2013.

"For me, it was easy ... easy for me, for everybody," Marcel Lehel Lazar, who goes by the moniker "Guccifer," told Fox News from a Virginia jail where he is being held.

Excellent question! Releasing data confirms a compromise or leak. Leaks confirmed tend to be quickly plugged. The release can also produce an audit trail and provide insights into one's interest in particular areas or topics. Some things are simply better memory holed, but not forgotten.

Lives were most likely lost and valuable intel most definitely lost. All because dumbazz Clinton is too arrogant and lazy to walk into a SCIF or log on to a SECRET machine.

‘Hot Summer’ of Turbulence Wilts Lira as Erdogan Tightens Grip
[BLOOMBERG] Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
gave investors a taste of just how quickly local politics can undo their investment strategies.

In three days this week, the lira wiped out almost all of the gains achieved in the past two months as markets reacted to a deepening rift between Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu that’s set to end with the premier leaving his job later this month. Government bonds plunged and the nation’s main stock index has suffered the worst losses worldwide.

The latest political convulsions have reignited concern that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s democratic institutions lack the power to resist Erdogan’s bid to expand his powers, which subsided after elections last year gave the AK Party from which he hailed a smaller majority than he would need to change the constitution. Burak Demircioglu at Istanbul-based Burgan Yatirim Menkul Degerler said further political upsets threaten to set off "very harsh" market reaction.

"I think spasms like that will become more frequent," Luis Costa, Citigroup Inc.’s London-based chief strategist for eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said in comments before the conclusion of a meeting between the two leaders late on Wednesday. "It is going to be a hot summer in Turkey."

Costa said if the lira drops toward 3 per dollar, this may trigger a selloff in shorter-dated Turkish debt, though he retains a position in two-year bonds. The currency slid 3.3 percent to 2.9469 per dollar by 10:22 p.m. in Istanbul, extending losses after a person familiar with the matter said the AK Party will hold a leadership contest within 15 days, and the premier won’t be a candidate.

The violence showed no let-up in a conflict that has killed thousands of gunnies and hundreds of security force members and civilians since a 2-1/2 year ceasefire collapsed last July, shattering a grinding of the peace processor.

The armed forces said the PKK was behind the car kaboom at 00:50 am (2150 GMT) on a gendarmerie base in the Derik district of Mardin province, near the Syrian border.

Five people were maimed in the blast, four of them soldiers, it said.

Calls for probe into Mozambican 'mass grave'
[Al Ahram] Human Rights Watch
... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge....
on Wednesday called for a "credible and transparent" investigation by Mozambique into a reported mass grave containing 120 bodies in an area hit by festivities between security forces and rebels.

Farmers in the central region of Gorongosa region last week said they found the bodies, some of which appeared to have been recently buried while others had decomposed, in a former open-pit mine.

The area has been a hotspot of rising tensions between government forces and Renamo, the rebel group that fought a 16-year war against the state ending in 1992 and later became an opposition party.

"The Mozambican authorities should urgently act on reports of a mass grave," Zenaida Machado, Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch, said in statement.

"They should immediately launch a credible and transparent investigation.

"Denying the existence of the grave without appropriate investigations only serves to raise suspicions about what happened."

The site of the alleged grave has been cordoned off by government forces.

"We have found no evidence, we have not located the alleged mass grave and we have not been able to identify and talk with the farmers who supposedly found it," a police front man said Tuesday.

Renamo front man Antonio Muchanga said its members were routinely targeted by the security forces, claiming 50 had been murdered in recent months.

Renamo rejected the results of 2014 elections, which were won by Frelimo, the movement which led the country to independence from Portugal in 1975 and has ruled ever since.

Cairo court sentences activist Sanaa Seif to 6 months for 'insulting judiciary'
[Al Ahram] A Cairo misdemeanour court sentenced on Wednesday political activist Sanaa Seif to six months in prison for "insulting the judiciary."

Last week, the prosecution referred Seif to court after she refused to cooperate with investigations conducted by the prosecution over accusations of inciting protests against the Egyptian-Saudi Red Sea island deal and distributing posters to citizens in the Moqattam area.

's illusory sovereignty over the two Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir.

The 21-year-old Seif described the investigations as a "farce," which the prosecution considered an insult to the Sherlocks.

"Since the judicial system has lost its illusory sovereignty, with it not issuing its own decisions, as it has lost its fairness as well as its commitment to delivering justice; and given that executive authorities are the ones running the state, I describe this investigation as only a farce, and this is why I refuse to cooperate with it," Seif told prosecutors last week, according to her sister Mona.

Seif, who is currently out on bail, did not attend today’s court session.

The political activist still has the right to appeal the decision, though she said on her Facebook account that she would not do so.

Eastern Aleppo could soon be besieged, UN warns
[Al Ahram] The Syrian government has refused a UN request for humanitarian aid access to rebel-held eastern Aleppo, the UN said Wednesday, warning that the area could soon be besieged.

"The horrific fighting and bombardment in recent days, especially in and around Aleppo, is creating new areas with endless suffering and no access for humanitarians," said Jan Egeland, who heads an international humanitarian taskforce for the war-ravaged country.

Speaking to news hounds after a meeting of the taskforce created in February by the 17-nation International Syria Support Group (ISSG), he said the situation in Aleppo needed to change immediately.

"If not, eastern Aleppo may even become a besieged area," he warned.

Syria's second city has over nearly two weeks been hit by a wave of violence, including numerous attacks on hospitals and other medical facilities, that has killed more than 270 people.

ISIL must be pushed back in northern Syria: Turkish minister
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) must immediately be pushed back from the Turkish border, said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who has intensified diplomatic efforts on Syria ahead of a May 9 meeting in Paris, adding that efforts were continuing to accomplish this goal.

Speaking to reporters in Ankara, the minister voiced frustration over ISIL’s persistent grip on Syria and Iraq despite what he said was a near two-year long effort by the U.S.-led coalition involving 65 countries.

“Daesh should be cleared from the region. This is the most permanent solution,” Çavuşoğlu said, using an Arabic term for ISIL.

“It should be removed from the Manbij region and cleared toward the south,” he said, referring to a town that has been used as an ISIL logistical hub.

Trump eyes running mate with political experience
[Al Ahram] Donald Trump, the de facto Republican nominee in the race for the White House, said Wednesday he wants a running mate with political experience who can work well with Congress.

Trump said his pick for vice president -- unlike the billionaire real estate mogul himself, who is political novice -- will be someone well-versed in Washington politics.

"It will probably be a person with political experience," Trump said in an interview with television broadcaster ABC the morning after his chief remaining rival in the race, Texas senator Ted Cruz, abandoned his White House bid.

"I would like to have somebody that could truly be good with respect to dealing with the Senate, dealing with Congress, getting legislation passed."

Trump seized a resounding victory in Tuesday's primary in Indiana and is expected to easily scoop up the 1,237 delegates necessary to officially secure the nomination.

His brash style, stances on issues that depart from party orthodoxy and personal attacks have divided Republicans.

Trump's choice of running mate -- a decision generally announced shortly before the party's national convention that culminates the nomination process -- could help him sway skeptics.

This year's Republican National Convention will take place in Cleveland, kept in touch with the world by Obamaphone,

Iraq
30K newly displaced Iraqis may arrive in Kurdistan soon
[ARA News] AMUDE – This week, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) started to build a new camp to host nearly one thousand newly displaced people who’ve fled fighting in Makhmour district, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I).

Kurdish officials have warned that thousands of displaced people will head to the Kurdistan Region due to the future Mosul offensive against the Islamic State (ISIS).

The US defence officials have stated that Mosul and Raqqa are a priority for the anti-ISIS coalition. US president Barack Obama told CBS news that he expects Mosul to fall at the end of this year.

“As the secretary has pointed out repeatedly, and others have pointed out, Raqqa and Mosul remain extraordinarily important objectives that we are focused on,” Army General Joseph Votel of the US Central Command said in a press conference.

“And there will be other areas that we will have to work on, as well. But those two [Mosul and Raqqa] remain extraordinarily important to us,” Votel added.

So far, 79 displaced families (376 individuals) have moved into the site. The camp is located in the grounds of a football stadium in Debaga near Makhmour in Iraqi Kurdistan. The facility will be expanded to shelter around 550 families.

The site was built in response to increasing numbers of newly displaced families at an existing camp in Debaga, which is now hosting around 8000 people. The families had fled villages east of the Tigris river to avoid being caught up in military clashes as the Iraqi Security Forces supported by Kurdish Peshmerga forces carried out operations to re-take control of villages held by the ISIS extremist group.

As many as 30,000 newly displaced individuals may arrive in Makhmour over the coming weeks as the military offensive continues, according to the UN If the real battle for Mosul starts, hundreds of thousands of civilians will most likely flee the city towards the Kurdistan Region.

“The newly-built facility will help to ease some of the overcrowding that we have seen since the latest fighting began”, said Fred Cussigh, head of UNHCR’s field response unit in Erbil. “People had been living in difficult conditions, with several families having to share a tent in some cases.”

New arrivals moving to the stadium site received mattresses and kitchen sets from UNHCR as well as kerosene for cooking, drinking water and basic food items from UNHCR’s partner, the Barzani Charity Foundation.

The agency is also drawing up contingency plans to be able to prepare for further fresh displacements. “The likelihood is that we will see increased numbers arriving and we are currently looking at other areas where we could establish new camps if necessary, capable of sheltering up to 20,000 individuals”, said UNHCR’s Fred Cussigh.

There are currently 3.4 million Iraqis displaced due to conflict in the country. More than one million are sheltered in the Kurdistan Region.

Speaking to ARA News, Peshmerga Commander Sirwan Barzani said: “We have more than 1 million refugees and we are not even a country.”

Barzani stressed there should be more financial support for the Kurdistan region and the Kurdish Peshmerga forces.

“There will be more [displaced people] after the Mosul operation, and if the Iraqi army crosses the river [into Qayarah], thousands more will come,” Barzani told ARA News.

Turkey retaliates after Daesh rocket strikes
[AA.TR] Turkish artillery shelled targets in Syria on Wednesday in retaliation for ISIS cross-border rockets which struck the southeastern city of Kilis.

According to a military source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, two rockets were launched into Kilis at 8:00 a.m. Turkish time on Wednesday (GMT 05:00).

Turkish target acquisition radars later located ISIS weapon dumps which were then hit by artillery fire.

The source added that three ISIS bad boyz were potted during the operation.

Kilis, a province just six kilometers (four miles) from the Syrian border, has been subjected to repeated rocket attacks since January, resulting in 20 deaths.

Crevasses in the Classroom
[TAKIMAG] White kids in Berkeley averaged an impressive 2.7 grade levels higher than the national average across all races. But Berkeley’s Hispanics were 1.1 grade levels below the national average (all races) and Berkeley’s blacks scored 1.9 grade levels below the national average.

So, much of the reason for Berkeley’s immense racial gap (4.6 grade levels between whites and blacks) is because its white students, who tend to be the children of professors, Pixar employees, or the idle rich, score well. But Berkeley’s blacks do poorly, even by the standards of blacks in general, averaging below African-Americans in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
and Philadelphia.

One exacerbating factor might be that Berkeley’s schools have traditionally been run according to progressive education fads insisted upon by white leftists. For example, the Gates Foundation gave a million dollars to Bill Ayers’ brother Rick Ayers, another ’60s radical ex-runaway, to work his "small learning communities" voodoo upon Berkeley High School, with an unsurprisingly disastrous impact on math test scores.

Frustrated black parents in Berkeley have at times organized protests in favor of "back to basics" education for their children.

(By the way, the Stanford database hasn’t published any Asian test scores. Ambitious Asian parents tend to avoid the Berkeley school district, presumably viewing Berkeley as being into a lot of white hippie head trips that won’t help their tiger cubs ace the SAT.)

After Saudi Arabia
[DAWN] To any worker anywhere, a pay cheque is everything. The earnings represent what possibilities can be availed of in the future, what debts can be discharged from the past. It determines what will be eaten, what will be worn, which child will go to school and which one will stay at home. The workers employed by the Saudi Binladin Group (SBG) have waited in vain for the past four months for these coveted pay cheques.

Recently, the group, which is one of the biggest employers of expatriate workers in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, issued exit visas to nearly 77,000 foreign workers of its estimated 200,000 workers (both Saudi and foreign). According to reports published in Al Watan, nearly 55,000 of these workers have not been paid for several months.

On the weekend, these workers who waited in vain for their missing pay cheques erupted into the streets of Makkah. According to CNN, the unpaid workers were protesting in front of the SBG offices. Later that night, and after not receiving any response from company representatives, the disgruntled workers erupted into the streets of Makkah and burned down at least seven buses.

Their frustration is understandable; even while the Saudi government has barred SBG from any future construction contracts, the government has issued exit visas. As per Saudi immigration requirements, the vast majority of the unpaid workers who have been issued exit visas will have to leave. Once they have returned to their home country, and for many this is Pakistain, the chances that they will actually get paid for (in some cases) four months of hard labour become quite slim.

A problem for Pak workers is a problem for Pakistain. According to the State Bank of Pakistain, Pak workers in Saudi Arabia sent back $9.7 billion between July and December of last year. Remittances from Saudi Arabia make up the lion’s share of the over $18bn dollars that overseas workers sent to Pakistain in that period. The fact that a large number of expatriate construction workers have not been paid (and have been fired) by the largest employer in Saudi Arabia could well have significant impact on Pakistain’s economy.

Iraqi airstrikes eliminate ISIS bomb factories

(IraqiNews.com) Anbar – A source in the Joint Operations Command revealed on Wednesday, that the Iraqi F-16 fighter jets bombed a booby-trapping laboratory and killed a number of ISIS militants in Qaim area, while pointed out that the international coalition aviation targeted vehicles carrying ISIS leaders in Anbar suburbs.

The source said in a statement received by IraqiNews.com, “The Iraqi F-16 fighter jets bombed targets in Qaim area based on information obtained from the Directorate of Military Intelligence and under the supervision of the Joint Operations Command,” pointing out that, “The air strike destructed hideouts belonging to the enemy and killed dozens of ISIS terrorists, as well as destroying a booby-trapping laboratory.”

The statement added, “The international coalition aviation also destroyed three vehicles carrying ISIS leaders and a headquarters gathering senior leaders.”

Over 100 ISIS jihadis killed as Iraqi forces advance near Fallujah

[ARA News] DUHOK ــ Backed by the US-led coalition, Iraqi joint forces were able to destroy more than ten tunnels for the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) in the southern suburbs of Fallujah city in the province of Anbar, killing around 100 jihadis, the Anbar Operations Command of the Iraqi army said Wednesday in an official statement.

The Iraqi helicopters have destroyed eight ISIS-led car bombs south of Falluja, according to the statement.

Military sources confirmed that the amy troops were able to kill scores of ISIS militants in the vicinity of Fallujah, taking over strategic areas near the ISIS-held city.

“The joint forces [army police and tribal groups] were able to recapture the highway connecting Fallujah with Amriyah and Ramadi, and the districts of Albu Saiyf and Fahilat,” Iraqi commander J.L. told ARA News, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

On the other hand, sporadic clashes erupted between the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and ISIS militants in the areas near the group-held city of Tal Afar, and in the Telskuf district–which was recaptured by the Peshmerga earlier on Tuesday.

Speaking to ARA News, the Kurdish Commander Lt. Izzedin Wanki said: “The Peshmerga forces have launched a major campaign to clear the region from ISIS terrorists, especially after they took over strategic areas on Tuesday.”

On Sunday, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces began a major military operation against ISIS and were able to liberate the key village of al-Bashir south of Kirkuk, in northern Iraq, according to local sources.

“We [Peshmergas] clashed with ISIS terrorists in several fighting positions, while the latter responded by shelling the Kurdish headquarters with mortar shells,” Lt. Wanki told ARA News.

On Tuesday, Kurdish military sources said that the Peshmerga forces were able to deter an ISIS attack, pointing out that the jihadis carried out several car bomb attacks on the Peshmerga positions in the areas of Telskuf, Ba’shiqah, Khazar and Kweir.

ISIS aims to raise the morale of its militants and supporters after being exposed to heavy losses over the past few months, according to observers.

The radical group has been trying to carry out surprise attacks against the Peshmerga, but the latter was able to deter assailants with the support of the US-led coalition forces.

NATO weighs four battalions in Eastern states to deter Russia: U.S.
[Reuters] STUTTGART, Germany - The NATO alliance is weighing rotating four battalions of troops through Eastern member states, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Monday, in the latest proposal by allies to guard against aggressive behavior by Russia.

The Baltic states - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - which joined NATO in 2004, have requested greater presence of the alliance, fearing a threat from Russia after it annexed the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

Carter acknowledged NATO deliberations included the deployment of the four battalions to the Baltic states and Poland. The Wall Street Journal said this would likely total about 4,000 troops split between the United States and its allies.

"That's one of the options that's being discussed," Carter told reporters traveling with him at the start of a three-day trip to Germany, declining to enter into details about the deliberations by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

"We're obviously involved in those discussions. I just don’t want to get out in front of where that goes."

U.S. officials say the goal in Europe is to move increasingly from efforts to reassure allies to broader activity to deter any aggressive moves by Russia.

The United States has already budgeted to sharply boost military training and exercises and last month announced it would deploy continuous rotations of U.S.-based armored brigade combat teams to Europe.

Carter's trip to Germany will include meetings with Army General Curtis Scaparrotti as he takes over as the next NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, succeeding U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove.

Scaparrotti told a Senate hearing last month that a resurgent Russia was displaying "increasingly aggressive behavior that challenges the international norms, often in violation of international law."

Russian realtor in Antalya suspected of ISIL membership
A Russian real estate agent operating in Turkey’s southern province of Antalya, who was detained for a short period before the G-20 summit in November 2015 on suspicion of being an ISIL militant, is now facing 15 years in prison. Russian citizen 34-year-old Aleksei Alekseev did not appear at the third hearing of the case at Antalya’s 2nd High Criminal Court, but was represented by his lawyer Nurali Çitil.

Alekseev came to Turkey via the Sarp border gate with his wife and two children two years ago after an investigation was opened in the Russian city of Tyumen concerning his activities after he converted to Islam.
A pious man. A heavily-armed, pious man...
In Antalya, the 2nd High Criminal Court opened a case into him for being a member of an armed organization, alleging that he provided accommodation for ISIL militants trying to cross over to Syria and Iraq. Several photographs of public buildings, their floorplans, the G-20 fair venue, passport photocopies, photos containing violent scenes, and armed people in camouflage dresses were found by investigators on his computer.

In his defense, Alekseev argued that he came to Antalya two years ago and was selling real estate especially to Russian citizens. He said it was natural to have photos of several sites on his computer because every realtor has photos of property that he is selling and of the surrounding neighborhood.
Especially of military installations, public buildings and day care centers. You never know when a terrorist is going to want to settle down in an army neighborhood with amenities and good schools...
Alekseev denied having any connection to the armed and camouflaged people seen on photos in his computer.
"Having people in the photos makes the properties more appealing to potential buyers -- that's settled science. Besides, it just that kind of neighbourhood."
The indictment said the anti-terror department of the Antalya police had information that Alekseev was providing one-night accommodation for militants crossing to the war zone as well as arranging plane, boat and train trips.

With 15 years in jail demanded for the defendant, Alekseev’s lawyer said he denied all charges.
"Lies! All lies! And I don't wanna go to a Turkish prison!"

Protesters burn down 13 schools in South Africa
[AA.TR] Protesters have burnt 13 schools in South Africa’s northern Limpopo province, leaving thousands of students stranded without classes, according to police.

According to a police statement, nine schools were torched Tuesday night in Vuwani town in Vhembe district, while three others were burnt a day earlier on Monday.

The protesters were residents of the area, who were demonstrating against the national Municipal Demarcation Board’s decision to include Vuwani into the newly-created Malamulele Municipality.

Residents claimed they would not get better services under the new municipality and demanded to stay under Makhado Municipality. It remains unclear what prompted protesters to burn down schools to make authorities meet their demands.

Elijah Mhlanga, a front man for the education department told Anadolu Agency via telephone late Wednesday, that about 100,000 students could have been affected by the violence, because protesters also forced 50 schools in the surrounding area to shut down.

According to local media reports, shops and offices also remained shut in Vuwani and its surroundings as protesters barricaded roads.

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said the actions of protesters had severely undermined government efforts to improve education in the area.

"It is not only a waste of taxpayers’ money to lose valuable existing infrastructure but its disrespects the hard work of every law abiding member of society," Motshekga said in a statement Wednesday.

This is not the first time that protesters have vented their anger on schools in South Africa. In the past, protesters have burnt also trains, clinics and even looted shops to express their anger against poor service delivery or government decisions.

BEIRUT/MOSCOW: Rebel fighters launched an assault in Syria’s divided northern city of Aleppo on Tuesday and fired rockets on a hospital, in the latest violence to hit civilians as diplomats struggled to restore an unraveling cease-fire and resurrect peace talks.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that monitors the conflict, said rebel rockets had killed 19 people in government-held territory, including an unspecified number at the Al-Dabit hospital.

Kenya: Police foil interns plan to use anthrax in terror attack
Security agencies last week foiled a planned biological attack using anthrax and arrested three suspects, police said Tuesday.

The Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinett said a medical intern at the Wote Hospital, Mr Mohammed Abdi Ali, was one of the suspects arrested after police foiled the planned attack on April 29. Two other suspects, said to be Mr Ali’s accomplices who have gone into hiding since he was arrested, have been identified as Mr Ahmed Hish and Mr Farah Dagane, both medical interns in Kitale and police have put a Sh2 million bounty on them.

“The suspects were planning a large scale attack akin to that of Westgate Mall with the intention of killing innocent Kenyans. His network also included medical experts with whom they planned to unleash a biological attack in Kenya using anthrax,” Mr Boinett said.
Umm, anthrax isn't so easy to obtain. Medical 'interns' can't just write an order for anthrax.
The statement by the police boss comes just two weeks after both the Interior Cabinet secretary Joseph Nkaissery and his Health counterpart Dr Cleopa Mailu visited the Kenya Medical Research Institute to survey the security measures put in place.

Police revealed that Mr Ali’s terror network within Kenya spread as far as the Coast region, North Rift, Western as well as other countries that include Somalia, Libya and Syria.

“He belongs to an East African terror group network that has links to the ISIL,” Mr Boinett said.

Detectives from the Anti-terrorism Police Unit also arrested Mr Ali’s wife, Ms Nuseiba Mohammed Haji, who is a student at the Kampala International University. She was arrested in Uganda while attempting to evade the authorities. Also arrested in Uganda is her accomplice, Ms Fatuma Mohammed Hanshi.

The main suspect, Mr Ali, studied at the Kampala International University in Uganda prior to his return to Kenya. His terror network, police said, has been engaged in the active radicalisation and recruitment of university students and other Kenyan youth into terror networks.

“The same network has been facilitating Kenyan youth to secretly leave the country to join terror groups in Libya and Syria,” Mr Boinett said.

He was presented in court where custodial orders for an additional 30 days of investigations were granted. Police say Ali’s arrest and those of is accomplices is a major breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in Kenya.
Not one detail on where the anthrax was, how they planned to obtain it, and why Kenya has any supply of anthrax in the first place. Something isn't right with this story.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela should be rich. Instead it’s becoming a failed state.
[WASHINGTONPOST] It's come to this: The country with the largest oil reserves in the world can't afford to brew its own beer, stay in its own time zone, or even have its own people show up to work more than two times a week.

Venezuela, in other words, is well past the point of worrying that its economy might collapse. It already has. That's the only way to describe an economy that the International Monetary Fund thinks is going to shrink 8 percent and have 720 percent inflation this year. And that's not even the worst of it. No, that's the fact that the state itself is near collapse. Venezuela already has the world's second-highest murder rate, and now the Chavista regime seems to be threatening violence of its own if the opposition succeeds in recalling President Nicolás Maduro. It's a grim race between anarchy and civil war.

This is an entirely man-made catastrophe. Venezuela, by all rights, should be rich. As we just said, it has more oil than the United States or Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
or anyone else for that matter. But despite that, economic mismanagement on a world-historical scale has barely left it with enough money to even, well, pay for printing money anymore. That's right: Venezuela is almost too poor to afford inflation. Which is just another way of saying that the government is all but bankrupt.

How did Venezuela get here? Well, by spending more than it had and not having as much as it should. Let's take these in reverse order. It really shouldn't have been hard for the government to use some of its petrodollars on the poor without destroying the economy. Every other oil-rich country, after all, has figured that out. But you can't redistribute oil profits if there aren't oil profits to redistribute, or at least not many of them. And there weren't after Hugo Chavez replaced people who knew what they were doing with people he knew would be loyal to him at the state-owned oil company. It didn't help that he scared foreign oil companies off too. Or that he took money out, but didn't put it back in, so that they can no longer turn as much of their extra-heavy crude into refined oil. Add it all up, and Venezuela's oil production actually fell by about 25 percent between 1999 and 2013.

But that didn't stop the government from going on a spending spree. How big of one? Well, even triple-digit oil prices weren't enough to balance its books. So it got money from the one place it could: the printing press. And it has had to get a lot more now that oil prices have fallen so far the past two years. The result, as you might expect, of printing all these bolivars is that the bolivar has lost almost all its value against the dollar -- and no, that's not hyperbole. Since the start of 2012, the bolivar has, according to black market rates, fallen 99.1 percent against the dollar.

Kerry draws Red Line: Assad will not take Aleppo
Secretary of State John F. Kerry vowed Tuesday
May 3
not to allow Syria's largest city and onetime moderate opposition stronghold of Aleppo to fall to the regime of Syrian president Bashar Assad ‐ even if that means abandoning the fragile cease-fire that U.S. officials have been trying to uphold in the war-torn nation
as of 1 May Assad's forces control most of west Aleppo, the airport to the east and the industrial zone to the north so Kerry might be talking about the municipal center of the city.
"If Assad's strategy is to somehow think he's going to just carve out Aleppo and carve out a section of the country, I got news for you and for him: this war doesn't end,"
???? does anyone think the war is almost over????
Mr. Kerry told reporters at the State Department.

How bad is it in Venezuela? Soldiers are stealing goats
HT Insty
The situation in Venezuela has become so bad that even soldiers are struggling to support themselves.

Over the weekend, six members of the Venezuelan military were detained by local authorities for stealing goats, the Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional reported Sunday. It said the soldiers confessed to stealing the goats and said they did it to feed themselves, since they had no food left in their barracks.

"It's not a good sign when your military doesn't have enough food, and when the military has been relegated to guarding and protecting food lines," said Jason Marczak, director of the Latin America Economic Growth Initiative at the Atlantic Council. "This is endemic of the problems going on across the country."

Venezuela has been hard hit by food shortages, a dizzying inflation rate of about 181 percent and a collapse in the price of oil -- its most critical export.
