1972 Munich Olympics massacre ceremony attended by UK Labour Leader
[Breitbart] Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has stirred condemnation and disbelief from members of his own party after it was revealed he attended a graveside wreath-laying ceremony honoring a Palestinian terrorist involved in the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre.

In a story published in the Sunday Times, a column written by the Labour leader in October 2014 for the Communist Party newspaper Morning Star was cited as evidence he attended a ceremony in Tunisia "where wreaths were laid... on the graves of [those] killed by Mossad agents in Paris in 1991". Mr Corbyn described the event as "poignant".

He wrote: "After wreaths were laid at the graves of those who died on that day and on the graves of others killed by Mossad agents in Paris in 1991, we moved to the poignant statue in the main avenue of the coastal town of Ben Arous, which was festooned with Palestinian and Tunisian flags."

There is no record of Mossad having conducted an assassination in Paris in 1991.

Among those buried at the cemetery visited by Mr Corbyn is Atef Bseiso, who was head of intelligence for the PLO and was involved in the murder of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches as part of the infamous terrorist operation. The visit came just 12 months after Mr. Corbyn assumed leadership of the Labour Party.

During the Middle East trip, the man seeking to be prime minister also attended a conference alongside members of Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

UK-based Jewish groups were quick to respond.

I know it’s theoretically wrong for a Republican candidate to smack around an annoying liberal journalist, but that still doesn’t mean that I care. Our ability to care is a finite resource, and, in the vast scheme of things, millions of us have chosen to devote exactly none of it toward caring enough to engage in fussy self-flagellation because of what happened to Slappy La Brokenshades.

Sorry, not sorry.

And that’s not a good thing, not by any measure, but it is a real thing. Liberals have chosen to coarsen our culture. Their validation and encouragement of raw hate, their flouting of laws (Hi leakers! Hi Hillary!) and their utter refusal to accept democratic outcomes they disapprove of have consequences. What is itself so surprising is how liberals and their media rentboyz are so surprised to find that we normals are beginning to feel about them the way they feel about us ‐ and that we’re starting to act on it. If you hate us, guess what?

We’re going to start hating you right back.

Pro Golfer Tiger Woods arrested on DUI charges in Florida
[Guardian] The demise of Tiger Woods has taken its latest and perhaps the most serious turn, with confirmation the golfer was arrested on suspicion of drink driving in Florida in the early hours of Monday morning. As a police mug shot of Woods gained huge traction online ‐ his face puffy and eyes the epitome of sadness ‐ the epic career heights which saw the 41-year-old win 14 major championships and break records with stunning regularity never seemed so far away. Woods, once a sporting phenomenon, is now making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Woods’s details were issued by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office, as is customary for such incidents in the United States. The golfer was arrested close to his home in Jupiter Island at 3am, with his release time stated as 10.50am. There has been no detail provided as to where he was going or coming from, nor the level of alcohol in his system, but a full arrest report should appear on Tuesday. "He was arrested for suspicion of driving under influence at around 3am, and transported to the Palm Beach County Jail," said a spokesman for the Jupiter Police Department. "He is no longer at the jail."

The Railroading of Mike Flynn -- Anonymously
[PJ] In their effort to overturn the results of the 2016 election, the Sore Loser Left has hit upon an Alinskyite strategy of taking down major figures in the new administration one at a time, by smearing them, "raising questions," and spreading gossip. The first victim was the Obama-appointed Lt. General and former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency Mike Flynn, who served briefly as national security adviser under Trump until felled by the weight of a manufactured "controversy" for which there was, and still is, no evidence.

But don't take it from me -- take it from Eli Lake, one of the best reporters in the business:
Flynn has yet to be charged with a crime. If there is evidence that he betrayed his country, it has yet to be presented. None of the many news stories about Flynn's contacts with Russians and Turks has accused him of being disloyal to his country. And yet a decorated general has already been tried and convicted in the press.

None of this would be happening without some very dirty business from the national security state. It's a two-pronged campaign. First there are the whispers. Anonymous officials describe in detail elements of an ongoing investigation: intercepts of conversations between Russian officials about how they could influence Flynn during the transition; monitored phone calls about how Flynn had lied about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to his colleagues; how Flynn failed to disclose his payment from the Russian propaganda network on his official forms. This prong of the campaign is at least factual, but the facts don't speak for themselves.

The second and more insidious element here is the innuendo. Yates never says Flynn was a spy for Russia. But her public remarks to Congress and the media appear designed to leave that impression. As she told Lizza, Flynn was "compromised by the Russians." This sounds far more sinister than Flynn's explanation when he left his post in February. Back then he said he had forgotten elements of his discussion with the Russian ambassador that covered a wide range of issues.
This whole sad, sorry, sordid episode will go down in history as journalistic malfeasance of the highest order. But the media -- relying almost entirely on anonymous sources whom they only allege and assert actually exist -- has tasted blood. In short order, they also went after Monica Crowley, then Sebastian Gorka, then Steve Bannon -- full disclosure: all three are friends of mine -- and now Jared Kushner, with the ultimate goal of taking down the president himself.

New York Democratic Activist Arrested on Child Pornography Charges
[LI] Authorities have arrested Jacob Schwartz, a New York City employee and president of the Manhattan Young Democrats, for allegedly possessing child pornography.

The NYPD Computer Crimes division began an investigation in March and Schwartz surrendered his computer. The detectives "found more than 3,000 images and 89 videos depicting girls as young as 6 months old performing sex acts on adult men."

Authorities said Schwartz downloaded the material from the internet.

Schwartz had enjoyed a rise in New York City as a Democrat activist. From The New York Post:
Jacob Schwartz is the president of the Manhattan Young Democrats and the downstate region vice president of the New York State Young Democrats.

But his name and photo were scrubbed from both groups’ Web sites after The Post broke the news of his arrest.

A statement from the Manhattan Young Democrats said the organization was "shocked" by the allegations against Schwartz, and added that he was "no longer a member of the board, and an interim president is now in place."

A photo posted last year on Twitter shows him posing with Robby Mook, then the campaign manager for Hillary Clinton’s disastrous presidential campaign.
He "founded the New Democratic Alliance and worked for the Obama presidential campaign in 2012 as a field organizer in Lehigh Valley, Pa." He also founded the nonprofit group Common Climate, which he served as the executive director of environmental education.

Goldman Sachs Bought Venezuela's State Oil Company's Bonds Last Week

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. GS 0.48% bought about $2.8 billion in Venezuelan bonds that had been held by the oil-rich country's central bank, a lifeline to President Nicolás Maduro's embattled government as it scrambles to raise funds in the midst of widening civil unrest.

The New York-based bank's asset management division last week paid 31 cents on the dollar, or about $865 million, for bonds issued by state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela SA in 2014, which mature in 2022, according to five people familiar with the transaction. The price represents a 31% discount on the trading Venezuelan securities maturing the same year.

The investment comes as Mr. Maduro's detractors lobby hard to block Western financial institutions from doing transactions that support the cash-strapped government, which has been accused by the U.S. and other countries of widespread rights abuses.

Mr. Maduro's increasing authoritarianism coupled with critical food and medicine shortages have spawned two months of almost-daily street demonstrations, costing at least 60 lives. The economy is also suffering, having shrunk 27% since 2013. Venezuela is saddled with what the International Monetary Fund estimates will be an inflation rate of 720% this year.

The people familiar said the deal is part of the asset manager's steady increase in Venezuelan holdings. They said Goldman is betting that a change in government could more than double the value of the debt, which trades at deeply discounted rates with yields around 30% due to chronic default fears.

So 31 cents on the dollar, the bonds still have to be paid back in 2022 and the full price of the bonds must be paid.

How much do you want to bet that of the 865 million dollars, all of it will go into various off shore accounts and none of it will be used to buy food, medicines and the like?

#4  Goldman Sachs isn't buying the bonds, some shell that is off loaded (see Fanny Mae) to pension funds, foreign banks, holding companies et al are buying the funds. Or in that 2008-9 example, ultimately the American taxpayer in bailouts for those stiffed by the issuer who knowingly buy the crap.

Too big to fail? Not for someone who knows how to play the game. Re-charter the First Bank of the United States (see Hamilton), absorb all the assets as well as the huge liabilities they try to off load this time on the taxpayers, and fire the first three levels of management, telling the stockholders you bet wrong.

Lawsuit by Benghazi families targeting Hillary Clinton dismissed by Obama-appointed federal judge
[Wash Times] A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit brought against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by relatives of two Americans killed during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Mrs. Clinton neither enabled the Benghazi attack by using her now-infamous private email server nor defamed its victims’ parents afterwards, U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled Friday in Washington, D.C., casting aside claims raised on behalf of parents of slain State Department information officer Sean Smith and late CIA operative Tyrone Woods.

The Smith and Woods families sued Mrs. Clinton last August in D.C. federal court alleging she caused their sons’ deaths by discussing sensitive State Dept. matters over an insecure, nongovernmental email system while secretary of state, supposedly providing terrorists with information used to plot the Sept. 11, 2012 ambush, according to the lawsuit.

Any emails sent by Mrs Clinton were within the scope of her position as secretary of state, the Obama-appointed judge ruled Friday, giving the court sufficient reason to dismiss the wrongful death claim on technical grounds, Politico first reported.

"The Court finds that Secretary Clinton was acting in the scope of her employment when she transmitted the emails that are alleged to give rise to her liability," Judge Jackson’s 29-page opinion reads in part. "The untimely death of plaintiffs’ sons is tragic, and the Court does not mean to minimize the unspeakable loss that plaintiffs have suffered in any way. But when one applies the appropriate legal standards, it is clear that plaintiffs have not alleged sufficient facts to rebut the presumption that Secretary Clinton was acting in her official capacity when she used her private email server."

"Her actions ‐ communicating with other State Department personnel and advisors about the official business of the department ‐ fall squarely within the scope of her duty to run the Department and conduct the foreign affairs of the nation as Secretary of State," Friday’s ruling said.

#3  Wars are inevitable I suppose. I just wish there was some way someone could dig into the way we actually do war and eliminate the friendly force 'wars within wars' that claim so many innocent lives.

For those unfamiliar with the term 'wars within wars,' what I am referring to is the 'we're special' factor. As in; geographic areas of responsibility (Specified Areas of Operation) mean nothing. 'We don't have to coordinate our operations with you because.... you don't have a need to know.'

The word 'special' should be stricken from the lexicons of everyone in uniform. Just my umble opinion.

A Drug Used To Treat Sleeping Sickness May Also Help With Autism

Mice are not humans. But they are close enough that many drugs that work in mice turn out to work in people, too. Three years ago Robert Naviaux, a researcher at the University of California, San Diego, published a paper suggesting that a drug called suramin could alleviate the symptoms of autism in mice. That was interesting, for despite all the research into autism, few effective treatments are available. Now things have got more interesting still. In a paper just published in Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Dr Naviaux has repeated his experiments on humans, and found that the drug seems effective for them, too.

Nobody is sure what causes autism. But one theory is that it stems from a phenomenon known as the "cellular danger response". This involves compounds circulating in the blood, known as purines, which command cells to halt their normal activities and brace for an imminent viral attack. That response is normal and, provided it switches off when the danger has passed, beneficial. But some researchers believe that the mechanism can end up switched on permanently. This, they think, can encourage the development of autism.

Nor is this simply conjecture. Dr Naviaux's past work with mice shows that when mothers are exposed to a virus-like stress while pregnant, the cellular danger responses of their pups can become permanently activated. And one side-effect of the response is to inhibit the growth of neural connections that is normal in young brains. The result is a set of behaviours - difficulty with social situations, and a strong preference for familiar things and for routine - that bear a strong resemblance to autism in humans.

Suramin, which was discovered in 1916 and has long been used to treat the sleeping sickness spread by tsetse flies, blocks purines from binding to neurons. Dr Naviaux reasoned this might help the neurons of young mice afflicted with autism to begin making connections again. Sure enough, as long as the mice were on the drug, they shed many of their autistic traits. The next step was to see if the same would happen with humans.

Like all early-stage clinical trials, this one was small. Dr Naviaux and his colleagues initially recruited 20 autistic boys between the ages of five and fourteen. The boys were paired by age, IQ and their severity of their autism, such that for every participant who was given an intravenous infusion of suramin, a very similar participant was given an intravenous infusion of saline solution as a placebo. This pairing and a decision to exclude any recruits who were found to be taking prescription drugs left the experiment with ten participants in total.

All of the boys had the suramin levels in their blood monitored over the course of six weeks. Most importantly, they were each assessed with a battery of tests designed to measure language ability, social interactions and the repetitive behaviours that are commonly associated with autism. All tests were run before the drug was administered and then again seven and 45 days later.

Each of the participants who was given suramin showed statistically significant improvements in their performance on the tests at seven days; those who were given the placebo showed no significant improvement at all. At 45 days, the boys who were given the drug were performing better on the tests than they had before the infusion, but it was clear that as suramin was leaving their system, their autistic traits were returning.

Those findings matched the experience of the children's parents. They did not know whether or not their children had been given suramin or a placebo. But those who had received the drug reported astounding changes in behaviour.One said that her 14-year-old boy, who had only been able to speak in single words and fragments of words before the infusion, started singing in the days after the infusion. One week later, he walked up to his father in the kitchen and said "I want to eat chips." It was the first full sentence he had uttered in 12 years. Another boy of five began smiling after receiving his infusion. Soon after he began to giggle and laugh, telling his mother, "I just don't know why I'm so happy".

Such stories were informal and are therefore not listed in the paper (instead, Dr Naviaux has collected them on his website). But they add to the impression that Dr Naviaux may be onto something. The logical next step would be to try long-term doses of the drug to see if the benefits can be sustained. If they can, then a new and powerful treatment for autism may have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

The Attack on Trump Is Exactly What a Russian Disinformation Campaign Looks Like
[Breitbart] The accusation that President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign colluded with the Russians, and that he is trying to cover it up, looks increasingly like a classic Russian disinformation campaign -- one designed to bring down the only president since the Cold War who has actually been willing to confront Russia in any meaningful way.

It is an article of faith on the left that Russia wanted Trump to win the election because Vladimir Putin anticipated a more pliant approach, signaled by Trump’s explicit desire to negotiate a better relationship. But the Russians may just as well have preferred Hillary Clinton, who had given Russia everything it wanted while serving as President Barack Obama’s Secretary of State -- from the ill-fated "reset," to a surrender of U.S. missile defenses in Eastern Europe, to the sale of 20% of America’s uranium reserves to a Russian company closely tied to the Russian state.

It is more plausible to suggest that Russia simply wants to disrupt American politics if it can get away with doing so, and would do the same regardless of which candidate won the election. Even if -- for argument’s sake -- Putin once preferred Trump, that would not preclude him from trying to undermine President Trump now, if possible.

And in the "Democrat-media" complex, Putin has found a particularly potent weapon, aimed directly at the president. One could not imagine a better way to create havoc for an adversary -- and the left is playing into the enemy’s hands, eagerly and mindlessly, forgetting its own slavish enthusiasm for Russia for nearly a century.

Cross of 12th century Byzantine chapel stolen in southern Turkey
[Hurriyet Daily News] The cross of a 12th century Byzantine chapel, located outside the ancient city of Myra in the southern province of Antalya, has reportedly been stolen.

Demre District Governor Murat Uz said an investigation has been opened into the theft, and they believe the 20-centimeter long marble cross was stolen in the last three or four days.

"The Culture and Tourism Ministry will make the necessary statement soon," said Uz.

The theft was noticed by security officials at Myra and a family living next to the chapel.

The Byzantine chapel was unearthed during excavations in 2010 carried out by Professor Nevzat Cevik, a member of the Akdeniz University Archaeology Department and the head of the Myra excavations, and Professor Engin Akyurek from the Byzantine History Department of Istanbul University.

The ancient chapel was restored with the contributions of then Culture Minister Ertugrul Gunay and taken under protection with tight security measures.

The 5.5-meter deep chapel is closed to visitors and is covered to prevent damage from the rain.

There are also Santa Claus, Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ figures at the entrance of the chapel.

8 die in Mississippi shooting
A man who went on a shooting rampage after a domestic argument is accused of killing eight people, including his mother-in-law and a sheriff's deputy, at three different residences in Mississippi.

After Willie Corey Godbolt, 35, of Bogue Chitto, was arrested around 7am on Sunday, he toldThe Clarion-Ledger he got into an argument with his estranged wife over their children on Saturday night.

Neighbors called the police, and Godbolt allegedly killed responding deputy William Durr, 36, around 11:30pm along with three women at the home in the 2800 block of Lee Drive in Bogue Chitto. Godbolt's wife fled the scene with her step-father.

Godbolt then made his way to the 1600 block of Coopertown Road, in Brockhaven, about 15 miles away, where the bodies of two juvenile boys were found, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations said.

A man and a woman were found dead at a third crime scene at the 300 block of East Lincoln Road before Godbolt was arrested Sunday morning, more than seven hours after the first shooting broke out.

Godbolt, who faces charges of one count of capital murder and seven counts of first degree murder, told the Clarion-Ledger he 'ran out of bullets' and planned to die by committing 'suicide by cop'.

'I ain't fit to live, not after what I done,' a handcuffed Godbolt told the local newspaper.

A criminal complaint says Kaine and others changed into black clothing during the rally and entered the Capitol. One group member threw a smoke bomb inside. The complaint says the 24-year-old Kaine was among those who bravely ran away, and he initially resisted arrest.

"Dozens" die in airstrike in Anbar


Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Dozens of Islamic State members were killed in an airstrike launched by the U.S.-led coalition, west of Anbar, a military source in the province said.

“The coalition jets shelled the IS tunnels and weapon stashes in Houran valley, west of Rutba town,” the source told AlSumaria News.

“The strikes left the tunnels and stashes destroyed and dozens of IS militants killed,” the source, who preferred anonymity, added.

Rutba is controlled by security troops, however, the town faces IS militants attacks every now and then that are being encountered by security.

Last week, an offensive was launched in the desert of Anbar leaving 34 militants killed. According to the War Media Cell, the operation was launched through thee axes including north of Qadisiya lake toward Rawa city, south of Euphrates River toward Rihana and Annah cities and another axis toward Makhazin Haditha and Valley of Houran.

Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa have been held by the extremist group since 2014, when it emerged to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate.

Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition have also regularly pounded IS locations in the province. The Iraqi government is expected to aim at those strongholds once the Mosul battle is concluded.

The security agency said that the six-member cell included three members of the Paleostinian Authority’s Preventive Security Services, one of whom previously served time in an Israeli prison on terror charges before being released in a 2011 prisoner exchange for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

During the arrest, the date of which was not given in the Shin Bet statement, the security agency said it uncovered two homemade "Carlo" rifles and at least seven pipe bombs.

The Shin Bet said that the cell also sought to purchase higher-quality rifles to use in future attacks, but lacked the funds to do so.

In addition to the six-member cell, the Shin Bet arrested an additional Tulkarem resident on suspicion of supplying the firearm used in the April 29 shooting.

The video, with English subtitles, can be seen at the link.

IAB Dhaka South City Unit President Imtiaz Alam made the demand at a protest programme held in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Sunday.

They also called for the removal of Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Nur during the programme.

Imtiaz claimed that the number of idols in public places has significantly increased across the country after Nur took office.

Pointing to some recently published media reports about the definition of idol and statue, Imtiaz said: "We know the difference between statue and idol. So, don’t try to be over-smart.

"Every Moslem should raise their voice against the idols and we are pledged to remove each and every idol from this country."

The next national election will be contested between Moslems and atheists and the government has to choose which side they want beside them, the IAB president added.

GM Nurul Amin, the president of Islami Shasantantra Chhatra Andolan (ISCA), the student wing of IAB, said the Chief Justice has been playing political games with the Themis sculpture.

Syrian air strikes hit Deir Ezzor
Syrian Army units thwarted ISIL terrorist groups’ attempts to infiltrate and attack the military posts in Tal Barouk west of Deir Ezzor city.

A military source told SANA Sunday that the army units clashed with ISIL terrorist groups which attempted to attack military posts in Tal Barouk area, killing and injuring a number of terrorists while the rest fled away towards the areas from which they launched their attack.

The army also destroyed their vehicle, weapons and ammunition.

The source added that other army units eliminated a number of ISIL terrorists in the surrounding of the cemeteries area, the vicinity of the airport, the gas field, al-Mahroukat hill and the west of al-Sanouf hill in Deir Ezzor.

The army inflicted heavy losses upon ISIL terrorist organization after targeting its movement axes and fortifications in the surrounding of the airport, Panorama area, al-Taem field, on al-Sham road, near al-Azem oil station, west of al-Sanouf hill, in al-Bghiliyeh village, al-Mahroukat hill in Aiyyash village and in the surrounding of regiment 137.

The Syrian Army troops continued their advances against ISIL terrorists in Eastern Aleppo, and deployed at the gates of the strategic militant-held town of Maskana, military sources said.

The army on Saturday seized control of al-Alyaniyeh, 10km south of Kheifis and 46 km southeast of al-Bassiri in the southeastern countryside of Homs, SANA news agency reported.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) A civilian was killed, four others were wounded in gunfire, IED blast that took place in north Baghdad, police sources said on Sunday.

“Unknown armed persons opened fire against a civilian while getting out of his house in al-Rashidiya, causing his immediate death,” the source told AlSumaria News.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source said, “security troops cordoned off the accident spot.”

Meanwhile, another police source said, “A bomb, placed on the side of the road in al-Mushahda region in Tarmiyah district, north of Baghdad, exploded in the morning causing injury of four civilians.”

[ARA News] The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) said today that the Turkish army and allied Syrian rebels continue to attack YPG positions near Kobane and Afrin.

In an official statement, the YPG leadership also said that Turkey uses drones to monitor YPG positions in Rojava-Northertn Syria.

“On May 21, Turkish warplanes flew on the border with Kobane from the west at 16:30. At the same day, mercenary groups fired at the positions of our forces on a hill in the village of Basofan, in the district of Shirawa. Our fighters responded immediately,” the YPG said.

Furthermore, on 24 May a Turkish drone flew over Kobane. Also on the 25th of the same month, a Turkish drone flew over Kobane. On 26 May, the YPG accused the Turkish army of attacking their positions with heavy weapons, which coincided with Turkish sorties over the borderline.

Turkey-backed groups also launched missile attacks on villages in the Afrin province on 24 May.

“On the 26th of the same month, clashes broke out between our forces and the mercenary groups of the Turkish army, that attempted to attack the village of Iska in the Jindires district of Afrin canton,” the YPG said.

The YPG said one of the attackers was killed during the clashes, and that the village of Basofan was also hit with rockets and rocket-propelled grenades.

The death toll in the recent clashes between Syrian Kurds and Turkey remained unknown.

Will and Stephens are anti-Trumpers. That's why they were hired. But they dissent to some degree from the left's positions. So, according to Hillary, they shouldn't be allowed a voice. No one except the radical left should.

This is the totalitarian mindset of the left. This is why so many voted against her. They weren't just voting against Hillary. They were voting for freedom.

Snipers and bombers slow Iraqi advance in Mosul
[ArabNews] BAGHDAD: The advance of government troops slowed on Sunday in the last push to drive Daesh terrorists from remaining pockets of Mosul, two Iraqi military officers said.

#2  Been looking into the Gulenist movement for awhile and must admit I'm confused by it. On the one hand, Erdogan hates it so it must be good. On the other hand, it's Islamic (Sufi moderate?) so I mistrust it. Strikes me as a sort of Muslim Brotherhood, Ottoman style. One thing's for sure: like the Wahhabis, they seem to be pursuing a 'hide in plain sight' strategy, via >150 U.S. charter schools and other seemingly innocuous outposts. Haven't found the apocalyptic, submit-to-the-sword language I've always suspected lurked beneath the covers, but maybe I haven't looked in the right places. Anyway, insights from those in the know appreciated.

I'm not exactly in the know, Whitch Turkeyneck3879, but here's what I've learnt from what others have said and posted here at Rantburg over the years:

Sultan Erdogan I (the much beloved) and Fethullen Gulen were best buddies until recently. Erdogan slowly made his nominally center right AKP party ascendant -- he founded the AKP in 2001 -- and even more slowly made it more religious, while his BFF handled the dawa (outreach) side of things through his excellent schools with their quiet emphasis on Islamicizing the students, then sending the alums out into the world to excel, support one another's efforts, tithe to expand the work -- much like a cult, in fact -- and vote for the AKP.

Erdogan spoke openly about riding democracy like a train until it got to his station, then getting off. Gulen was working on a generations-long, nonviolent march through all the institutions, within and without Turkey. Erdogan has been described as neo-Ottoman, seeing himself as the sultan of a restored empire including the Turkmen beyond Turkey's borders, which is why there are ISIS-linked Uzbeks in Istanbul to boost the population. Gulen, I think, does not care about the political organization of the thing, just that it be run from top to bottom by his pious Muslims.

Sufi mysticism is not necessarily otherworldly, though at first glance it's hard to see how whirling dervishes could be dangerous. ;-) My favourite article on Sufi jihadism is here.

[IsraelTimes] Two days after Norway’s foreign minister condemned the Paleostinian Authority for naming a women’s center in the West Bank, funded in part by the Scandinavian country, after a female terrorist, the UN issues its own condemnation.

The UN no longer supports the center, Dujarric clarifies. "The United Nations support to this community ended last year and it has asked for the logo of UN Women to be removed immediately. Furthermore, the inauguration of the Center took place after the UN’s association with it."

The center is located in the West Bank town of Burqa, and is named for Dalal Mughrabi, who took part in the 1978 Coastal Road Massacre. Mughrabi and several other Fatah bully boyz landed on a beach near Tel Aviv, hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Road and killed 38 civilians, 13 of them children, and maimed over 70.

Houthis fingered for deaths of journalists
Taiz – Houthi and Saleh militias continue to kill civilians in Taiz, particularly journalists whose lives were taken because they wanted to present the truth as it is, according to human rights activists and organizations.

The activists blamed Houthi for inciting murders against journalists during his delivered speeches.

Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS) said that what insurgents did is a terrorist massacre against journalists who were only trying to cover the clashes in Taiz.

YJS held Houthi leaders’ full responsibility for the crimes which comes after systemic instigation against media led by leader Houthi who bluntly called for killing journalists.

The syndicate added that the silence of international organizations has further encouraged the crimes and violations of international laws. It urged the UN and international community to take full responsibility and handle the murders as war crimes by international courts.

Human Rights Information and Training Center (HRITC) called upon the international community to condemn the insurgents’ criminal actions and exert more pressures to put an end to the massacres.

The center said that killing the journalists is a first degree humanitarian crime and insurgents should be put to trial in international and local courts.

In addition, HRITC urged the international community and humanitarian organizations to send urgent aids to Taiz which had been under continuous bombing and destruction for almost two years.

Women Journalists Without Chains also condemned Houthis militias for targeting the journalists in Taiz. In a statement issued, it expressed deep concern about the continued crimes against journalists by the coup’s militia. It pointed out that it has been not the first time that the militia deliberately targeted journalists who struggle for the truth and to convey violations and atrocities to the world.

The organization also recalled when Houthi militia leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, considered in one of his speeches: “Journalists are more dangerous than fighters and mercenaries”. The organization said that his speech is not only an incitement but also a direct order to target journalists.

The organization urged international and human rights organizations, “all the world’s free and advocates for freedoms and rights, first and foremost the United Nations and International Federation of Journalists” to condemn the violations against journalists and pressure the militia to stop targeting media professionals.

It also reiterated the necessity to take serious action in order to stop the Houthis’ crimes and violations against journalists, calling for the release of all media workers and journalists kidnapped in jails of the militia.

Libyan al-Qaeda group disbands
TRIPOLI: The Libyan jihadist group Ansar Al-Sharia, which is linked to Al-Qaeda and deemed a terrorist organization by the UN and United States, announced its “dissolution” in a communique published online on Saturday.

Washington accuses the group of being behind the September 11, 2012 attack on the US consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi in which ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

Ansar Al-Sharia is one of the jihadist groups that sprung up in Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, in the chaos following the death of dictator Muammar Qaddafi in 2011. They overran the city in 2014.

East Libyan military strongman Khalifa Haftar earlier this month launched an offensive to oust jihadist fighters from their two remaining strongholds in Benghazi.

In its communique Ansar Al-Sharia said it had been “weakened” by the fighting.

The group lost its leader, Mohammed Azahawi, in clashes with Haftar’s forces in Benghazi at the end of 2014.

Most of its members then defected to the so-called Daesh group. Ansar Al-Sharia later joined the Revolutionary Shoura Council of Benghazi, a local alliance of Islamist militias.

At its zenith, Ansar Al-Sharia was present in Benghazi and Derna in eastern Syria, with offshoots in Sirte and Sabratha, western Libya.

The organization took over barracks and other sites abandoned by the ousted Qaddafi forces and transformed them into training grounds for hundreds of jihadists seeking to head to Iraq or Syria.

That, Mattis said Sunday, showed "once again the callous disregard that is characterized by every operation they have run."

#4  ...I am reminded of the tale of the Tamil Tigers, a rebel group that spread havoc and death through Sri Lanka (they pretty much created the suicide belt and the use of female suicide bombers) - and every time they were on the ropes, the UN or some other organization/nation would step in and rescue them, or organize 'peace talks' which had no other purpose than to give them breathing room.

Finally, in 2006 - after a war that had lasted for THIRTY YEARS - the Sri Lankan government said, 'Enough'. The war was over three years later, and every moment of those three years, there were outsiders demanding that the Tigers be given another chance, peace talks, anything to keep them from losing.

A lesson we should ponder.

Feudal lord 'settles' rape case of 12-year-old girl through jirga in Kandhkot
[DAWN] A senior politician and influential feudal lord belonging to upper Sindh region, Sardar Taj Mohammad Domki, has claimed that he had settled the gang rape case of a 12-year-old maid servant and imposed a fine of Rs1.8 million against the "real accused".

He announced this on Sunday during a presser at his residence in Kandhkot town.

The 12-year-old girl, a resident of Kandhkot town in Sindh, was working as a maid at a house in Bloody Karachi

The feudal lord claimed that had he not intervened in the matter, the girl would never be able to get justice from the courts.

Highlighting the loopholes in the FIR, he said that the complainant had nominated the father and his two sons, whereas, Domki argued that "it was next to impossible that a minor girl could be raped by two brothers and their father."

Sardar Domki further claimed that now the complainant would file an application in the court to withdraw the case as per the rules set during jirga held a few days back.

The feudal lord said that he was satisfied that both parties agreed on the decision made under his supervision.

Seven persons were nominated in the FIR, including Rahib Sorhiani, his two sons and nephews under Sections 337 and 376 of the Pakistain Penal Code on account of rape and injuries.

Chief Justice of Pakistain Justice Saqib Nisar had also taken a notice of the incident on May 11. The crime reportedly took place in Malir Cantt area of Karachi.

The action followed media reports that a girl -- a resident of Kandhkot town in Sindh -- was working as a maid at a house in Karachi where she was allegedly intoxicated and gang-raped.

When contacted, a police official Mohammad Moosa at Kandhkot town said that three of the seven accused -- Saqib, Sheeraj and Apno -- were in jail under judicial remand. He added that police was unaware of any jirga as claimed by Sardar Domki.

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights had directed the Ministry of Human Rights to get details of the incident and submit a report at the earliest.

Committee chairman Babar Nawaz Khan said such incidents could only be eradicated by ensuring strict action against the accused.

[Dhaka Tribune] The High court has released the full text of its verdict reconfirming the death penalties handed down to two Death Eaters for killing blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider in 2013.

The verdict, which was published on Sunday, is available on the Supreme Court website.

The release of the full verdict has cleared the way for the convicts ‐ banned murderous Moslem group Ansarullah Bangla Team members Md Faisal Bin Nayem alias Dweep and former Shibir leader Redwanul Azad Rana ‐ to move the Appellate Division against the High Court judgement.

On April 2, the High Court upheld a speedy trial tribunal verdict that sentenced Nayem and Rana to death for the murder.

On December 31, 2015, the special tribunal handed the death penalties to the duo for criminal masterminding the murder of blogger Rajib and also fined them Tk10,000 each.

In addition, the tribunal sentenced six others to various terms of imprisonment for the murder, including a five-year sentence for Mufti Jashim Uddin Rahmani, the spiritual leader of Ansarullah, which is affiliated with al-Qaeda.

Al-Qaeda’s Bangladesh wing Ansar al-Islam had grabbed credit for the murder.

On March 15, 2015, the DMP announced a bounty of Tk5 lakh for Rana, a top leader of the outfit, for criminal masterminding the murder of Mukto-Mona blog founder Avijit Roy on February 26 the same year. Avijit’s wife and co-writer Rafida Ahmed Banna was maimed in the attack.

A day after the murder, the victim’s father Nazim Uddin filed a murder case with Pallabi cop shoppe.

According to the charge sheet, the convicts ‐ all expelled students of North South University ‐ were instigated by Shibir leader Rana to commit murder of atheists and secularists.

Several top Ansarullah leaders, Rana and some of the convicts used to visit Hatembagh mosque in Dhanmondi area to listen to the Friday sermons given by Rahmani, a former leader of Islami Andolon Bangladesh’s Barisal unit who in 2010 established Markazul Uloom Al Islamia Madrasa and Mosque.

Rahmani professed bloggers who demean Islam or Allah or Muhammad should be killed as per the Islamic rule. He supported Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefajat-e-Islam

12 die as ISIS lights up Mosul hospital

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants set fire at a public hospital under security forces siege in western Mosul and executed 12 inside as security operations reach the group’s final holdouts.

Col, Khedr Saleh, from the Iraqi Federal Police, told BasNews that IS militants set fire to the “public hospital” as the forces besieged it after taking over two other hospitals over the past two days.

“Daesh (Islamic State) members executed 12 civilians, including young people in their twenties, inside the hospital,” Saleh said, noting that those had been in detention.

The Public Hospital is the city’s fifth and is the last one under IS control.

Iraqi government troops engaged in intense fighting with Islamic State members on Sunday as they continued incursions into IS’s last havens in western Mosul’s Old City.

Rudaw agency said army warplanes bombarded two IS locations in Zanjili district, south of the strategic Old City, the group’s last holdout in western Mosul.

Fierce encounters continue also at neighboring al-Sihha, where troops regained control by 70 percent, with militants encircled inside the Old City, the network added.

Iraqi commanders had predicted the battle against IS in Mosul to end before the holy month of Ramadan, which started Saturday.

Earlier this month, the Iraqi command said it moved towards the Old City from the northwest, having besieged the area for weeks from the south.

The Old City, with its narrowly structured alleyways, and with hundreds of thousands of civilians believed to be stranded inside, was the place where IS declared the establishment of its rule in Iraq in 2014.

The United Nations says it expects 200.000 civilians to flee the area as encounters heat up.

Female ISIS executioner die in shooting in Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) A Yemeni militant with the Islamic State in charge of executing women was killed by unknown attackers in southwestern Kirkuk, a security source in the province was quoted saying Sunday.

Ikhnews quoted the source saying that the gunmen invaded the militant’s home in central Hawija, a prominent IS stronghold, before fleeing to an unknown destination.

The deceased was in charge of executing women who had attempted to escape the region months earlier.

IS members have been in control over Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk since 2014, when the group came to the scene, took over several Iraqi regions and proclaimed an Islamic “caliphate”.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and paramilitary troops, launched an offensive in October to retake the city of Mosul, Islamic State’s largest urban stronghold in Iraq. The Iraqi government is planning to aim at other IS havens across Iraq after Mosul.

Local officials in Hawija have repeatedly urged the government to hasten with the liberation of their town.

Since taking over Iraqi regions, Islamic State members have executed dozens of civilians, security members and many of its own members for various reasons ranging from collaboration with security forces to attempting to flee areas under the group’s control.

11 civilians released from captivity in Helmand
The Ministry of Interior in a statement on Sunday said that 11 people were freed from Taliban’s custody in a military operation carried out by Special Force Unit of the Afghan National Police in southern Helmand province.

“Those released included five civilians and six Afghan National Security Force members,” the statement said.

The operation was launched in Naqel Abad village in Nad Ali district in the province, the statement said.

The statement did not provide more details about the operation.

[Telegraph] A crackdown on the suspected terror network behind Manchester Arena suicide bomber Salman Abedi saw police carry out a flurry of armed raids and arrests over the weekend.

Gun-carrying officers swooped on sites across the city as they worked to stamp out any lingering threat from co-conspirators to Monday's massacre.

The total number of people in custody over the attack rose to 13 when a 19-year-old man was detained during a search of a house in the Gorton area of the city late on Sunday.

With the intense series of police operations showing no signs of abating:
  • A 25-year-old man was held on suspicion of terror offences in the Old Trafford district.

  • Thousands of runners turned out defiantly for the Great Manchester Run, pounding the streets of the city amid a heightened security operation.

  • The NHS said 54 people injured in the attack were still being treated in eight hospitals with 19 receiving critical care.

  • Home Secretary Amber Rudd revealed temporary exclusion orders, banning suspected jihadis from returning to the UK, had been used for the first time.

  • CCTV stills of Abedi, bespectacled and casually clothed, were released by police in a plea for information about his movements between May 18 and the attack.
On Sunday, counter-terror officers stormed addresses in Gorton, Rusholme and Moss Side.

Explosions were reported at several of the searches, but police would not comment on whether controlled blasts were used to gain entry.

Three people were arrested - and quickly de-arrested - during the afternoon's operation at Quantock Street, Moss Side, leading them to post an outraged sign on their front door. It read: "This is what the police has caused and we have nothing to do with what happened in the bombing attack".

One Moss Side resident, who did not want to be named, said a group of young Middle Eastern men moved into the address around six months ago.

29 ISIS Bad Guys die in Baaj airstrikes

Baaj (IraqiNews.com) Twenty-nine Islamic State militants were killed in an airstrike launched by the Iraqi troops in Baaj town, western Nineveh, according to the Iraqi army.

“The army jets killed 29 IS members and destroyed a booby-trapped container, two vehicles and a third with gun installed on it while backing the paramilitary troops and joint troops in Mosul city and regions located west of it,” Colonel Mohamed al-Malki, spokesperson of the army airforce.

“The joint troops resume its operations that target liberating the remaining IS-held regions in Nineveh,” Malki added.

Close to the Iraqi-Iranian borders, Baaj is considered an important IS stronghold.

While major offensives take place in Mosul by Iraqi troops, backed by U.S.-led coalition, other offensives are launched by the paramilitary troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi to liberate neighboring regions in Nineveh province.

Last week, the paramilitary troops launched a second phase of operations launched earlier this month to complete the liberation of villages in the vicinity of Qairawan, freed on Tuesday, ahead of advancing toward Baaj, west of Mosul city.

An offensive was launched by PMUs on May 12, which resulted in clearing of Qairawan region, a main Islamic State bastion in west of Mosul which links between Tal Afar town and the Syrian borders, from IS militants on Tuesday.

20 die in airstrikes in old Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Forty-five civilians were killed and injured in airstrikes that hit Mosul’s Old City early on Sunday, news reports mentioned.

A local source told Al-Furat Al-Ikhbari news website that twenty civilians were killed, while more than 25 others were wounded in an airstrike launched by the international coalition led by the U.S. at al-Farouq street and Hadiret al-Sadah, north of the Old City.

The Old City is home of the ancient Grand Nuri Mosque, from which the group’s Supreme Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gave a famous sermon in 2014 declaring the establishment of the ‘caliphate’

Previously in May, the Joint Operations Command said more than 16,000 IS fighters were killed since start of Mosul operations in October.

Iraqi commanders say they at least 90 percent of territories in western Mosul is under Iraqi troops control, predicting to retake the city before the end of May. Only two districts besides the Old City are under IS control.

Iraqi forces have been sweeping through northwestern neighborhoods over the past few weeks in a way to invade the strategic Old City, after finding it hard to invade from the south.

The eastern side of Mosul was retaken in January after three months of battles. Another major offensive was launched in February to recapture the western flank of the city.

Iraqi militia captures village in western Mosul

Baaj (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi paramilitary troops recaptured another village on Sunday as they continue to clear Islamic State holdouts west of Mosul and near the borders with Syria.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) said on its media website that troops took over al-Qahtaniya area, north of Baaj, and were combing the area to entirely eliminate militants.

PMUs, an alliance of more than 60 mostly Shia militias, are recognized by the government as a national force under the Prime Minister’s command. They have been actively engaged in the campaign against Islamic State militants in Nineveh’s western regions.

Al-Hashd has recaptured several villages since it launched an operation earlier this month to clear Qairawan and neighboring Baaj from IS. A top leader said last week Qairawan was totally liberated. Al-Hashd had said the region became isolated from Mosul and from IS havens in Syria.

Their campaign runs simultaneously with government troops operations in Mosul, Islamic State’s largest stronghold in Iraq. Security forces are currently invading the last districts held by IS in western Mosul, targeting the strategic Old City where IS first declared the inception of its proclaimed “caliphate”.

Iraqi commanders were recently quoted predicting the campaign to realize victory within a few days.

Fighting erupts among Syrian rebel groups in Aleppo
Aleppo (SyriaNews.media) Clashes broke out, on Sunday, between the Syrian opposition and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Sheikh Eissa area, north of Aleppo, amid mutual shelling, Qasioun News Agency reported.

The clashes were followed by a shelling carried out by the artillery of the Turkish Army on the headquarters of the Syrian Democratic Forces, north of Aleppo, while the latter shelled the opposition headquarters using mortar shells.

Yesterday, clashes also broke out between the opposition and the Syrian Democratic Forces in Darat Izza town, west of Aleppo, and Sheikh Eissa and Ayn Dakna villages, north of the city, amid mutual shelling.

Furthermore, Syrian Democratic Forces shelled the city of Mare’, yesterday, killing a civilian and wounding others.

Kurds repel ISIS attack in Salahuddin: 12 die
Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Twelve Islamic State militants, three Kurdish fighters were wounded as Peshmerga forces repelled an attack by the extremists in Tuz Khurmatu, east of Salahuddin.

“IS militants launched an attack against Tuz Khurmatu,” an anonymous source told AlSumaria News. “Three Peshmerga fighters, included Khurmatu commander Abdullah Bor were wounded by a bomb blast.”

“Clashes occurred between Peshmerga forces and IS militants in Heleiwa village, west of Khurmatu, lasting for hours,” the source said. “The troops repulsed the attack killing 12 militants.”

In a press conference, Bor, who was wounded in the head, said “We instructed battling against the militants after being informed about the attack.”

IS launched a similar attack in mid-May in Khurmatu, which was repelled by the Peshmerga and the paramilitary troops.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Violence and armed conflicts claimed the lives of 317 Iraqis, and caused injuries to 403 others during the month of April, according to a monthly count by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

Nineveh, where U.S.-backed Iraqi government troops are caught up in battles against Islamic State militants in Mosul since October, came on top of the most affected governorate, with 276 casualties (153 killed, 123 injured). Baghdad Governorate came next with 55 killed and 179 injured. Salahuddin came third, with 15 killed and 43 injured.

2,000 trapped as fighting rages in Marawi
[AFP] 2,000 fearful civilians were trapped on Sunday inside Marawi where Philippine troops are battling Islamist militants, as the death toll from almost a week of fighting neared 100. The military intensified its bombing campaign on parts of the city on Mindanao island, as it accused the gunmen of atrocities including murdering women and a child. Most of the city's 200,000 residents have fled, but 2,000 remain trapped in areas controlled by the militants.

Zia Alonto Adiong, spokesman for the provincial crisis management committee, said, "They have been sending us text messages, calling our hotline, requesting us to send rescue teams but we cannot simply go to areas which are inaccessible to us. They want to leave. They are afraid for their safety. Some are running out of food to eat. They fear they will be hit by bullets, by airstrikes."

The military announced on Saturday, the start of Ramadan, that it would step up the bombing. Military spokesman Restituto Padilla said, "In as much as we would like to avoid collateral damage, these rebels are forcing the hand of government by hiding and holding out inside private homes, government buildings and other facilities. Their refusal to surrender is holding the city captive. Hence, it is now increasingly becoming necessary to use more surgical airstrikes to clear the city and to bring this rebellion to a quicker end."

The insurgents have killed at least 19 civilians, including three women and a child who were found dead near a university. Regional military spokesman Jo-ar Herrera said,"These are civilians, women. These terrorists are anti-people."

A press photographer saw eight bodies dumped off a bridge on the outskirts of Marawi on Sunday, with local residents identifying them as employees of a rice mill and a medical college. It was not clear whether those eight were included in the military's count of civilian deaths.

Fifteen soldiers, two policemen and 61 rebels have been killed in the fighting, according to officials. This brings the combined official death toll to at least 97.

The Syrian Army couldn't hold rainwater in their collective hands, let alone territory seized from their enemies...
Aleppo (SyriaNews.media) Syrian government forces and their affiliated militias managed, on Sunday, to recapture several areas near the city of Maskana, east of Aleppo, Qasioun News reported.

The Syrian regime forces managed to retake the areas of Maskana Train Station, Khirbet al-Far, al-Masaken and al-Sukariyah, after fierce battles with the Islamic State group, amid mutual rockets and artillery shelling, but no casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, Russian Aviation conducted air strikes on the residential neighborhoods in the cities of Maskana, al-Hamidiyah and al-Tayiba, inflicting material damage to the areas without causing any casualties.

Noteworthy, Syrian regime forces and their affiliated militias reached the northwestern outskirts of the city of Maskana, the last stronghold of the Islamic State in eastern Aleppo.

Egyptian army kills three militants in central Sinai raid: Military spokesman
[AlAhram] Egyptian soldiers have killed three "highly dangerous" Death Eaters in a raid in the central part of the Sinai Peninsula, the Egyptian military said in a statement on Sunday.

The operation targeted the Death Eaters as they were about to carry out an attack on security forces, according to the statement published online by Egyptian military front man Colonel Tamer El-Refai.

The warplanes struck seven PKK targets in the Avasin-Basyan region of northern Iraq, and killed Lions of Islam believed to be preparing for an attack, the military said.

In a separate air strike in Turkey's southeastern province of Van late on Saturday, the military said warplanes had killed another 10 PKK murderous Moslems.

Afghan Army planning intensified night attacks
No word as to whether the Taliban can pencil them in yet.

[ToloNews] The Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Sunday said the Afghan National Army’s Commando Forces and the Afghan Air Force are preparing to broaden their military campaign against Taliban insurgents in a number of volatile regions of the country where insurgents have been trying to make footholds and gain grounds as part of their summer offensive.

“We are planning plan to increase night raids including operations by the commando units and air attacks,” Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said.

Meanwhile, a number of provincial officials have confirmed that the Afghan security forces backed by commandos and Air Force have surged their attacks against militants’ hideouts.

This new development takes place at a time that over the recent months, the Taliban operatives have tried to infiltrate key towns in the east and north.
In Ghazni, the Afghan army managed to foil several offensives by the Taliban insurgents, said local officials.

“In Waghaz district (in Ghazni), 36 militants were killed and 20 others were wounded,” said Ghazni governor Abdul Karim Mateen.

“The main goal of our (military) operation is to secure Gul Tepa district in Kunduz province and to deploy friendly forces over there,” said Abdul Wase Milad, Commander of Army’s 203 Thunder Corps in Kunduz.

Also in Ghazni’s neighborhood Maidan Warkak province, the Taliban launched several attacks on the key highway connecting Ghazni to Kabul.

“They (Taliban) suffered heavy losses. The (military) operations were hailed by tribal elders, because no civilian was harmed during the operations,” the Maidan Wardak Police Chief Fahim Qaem said.

Local officials said government forces have increased their night raids and military operations in Helmand and Kunduz provinces where the Taliban fighters have been struggling to gain grounds.

It is said that currently the Afghan Army soldiers are conducting 17 operations on a daily basis including 15 separate operations by commando forces.

Defense Ministry officials said all the military operations are supported by the Afghan Air Force.

52 LNA soldiers die in Tripoli fighting
TRIPOLI: Forces loyal to Libya’s unity government said Saturday that 52 of its fighters were killed as they repelled rival militias in fierce clashes in the capital Tripoli.

Apart from sporadic gunfire in southern Tripoli, calm returned to the city on Saturday, the first day of Ramadan.

Among the 52 killed in Friday’s clashes which centered on the southern district of Abu Slim, said Hashem Bichr, a security official of the Government of National Accord, were 17 members of pro-GNA forces who had been “executed.”

There was no immediate confirmation from medical or other independent sources of the death toll, updated from Friday’s Health Ministry figures of 28 dead and more than 100 wounded that did not give a breakdown of the casualties.

UN special envoy Martin Kobler condemned the fighting in which heavy artillery and tanks were used, urging restraint from all sides.

Forces of the UN-backed GNA announced on their Facebook page they had defeated rival militias and taken control of a prison holding key leaders of the ousted regime of Muammar Qaddafi including his last premier, Baghdadi Al-Mahmudi, and former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi.

Al-Hadhba jail had been under the control of the Fajr Libya militia coalition, which had seized Tripoli in 2014 and set up a government headed by Khalifa Ghweil.
