#2 Most of the situations like this that I have read about is some dumb schmuck, pissed off at something and wants a little revenge but it too stupid to do it well.

My bet is this dolt was mad at the gas company/town for raising rates/unemployment and wanted to send a message but blown himself up in the process.

An Islamist would have carried it to the mall. This is mere sabotage...it's what WE would do, but we're not Islamists so the thought process is different.
