It is said that the collection of the Detroit Institute of the Arts is worth many billions. To help resolve the inevitable bankruptcy, should the city offer up part or all of the collection to pay its debts (particularly to city employee pension plans), or should it continue to hold the collection in conservatorship for future generations?

#6 Hi - I left Detroit in the early '90s just past the peak of a crack fueled burning of the city. This was bound to happen, Even before the Young administration Detroit was corrupt..
NAFTA sealed the deal with most of the auto parts manufacturing going to Mexico.

People may talk about 'white flight' but after the Devils Nights for a few years around '87 - IMO - any one who could, left the city.
White - Black - Latino...
I know most big city's have problems - but I've never seen it on a scale like that of Detroit at the time.
And I've been to most large American cities.
My only hope is that this is not the coming trend for other cities in America.
And I wont even start in on the salifist's in Dearborn and Hamtramak...

Steve, I've heard not only the works at the DIA (and the bronze Rodan Thinker statue} are to be sold but also selections of the library - even talk of selling the bronze 'Spirit of Detroit' statue...

There is the large black fist statue though.(famous black boxer from the 40's)
It's odd, a large forearm and fist hanging on a chain on a tripod.
it must be 10 - 15 feet long probably bronze.

#16 Natural final step, thanks to unions and corrupt politicians (but I repeat myself).

And YES, they should sell the artwork, etc., to help pay their creditors. (And no, that money shouldn't go straight into the union pockets pension funds, stiffing all the other creditors.)

If I had to go bankrupt, with debts way over my head that I knew when I incurred them I wouldn't be able to pay, would I be allowed to hold the bulk of my tangible assets "in conservatorship for future generations"?

P.S. - I know someone who's in bankruptcy now, and the answer is NO.

Y'all might want to consider putting surveillance on the Museam to make sure those assets don't "fall off the back of" the Museum.
