Rogue Ukrainian volunteer unit refuses order to disband

Members of a Ukrainian volunteer battalion have begun fortifying positions against a feared assault by Ukrainian ministry of interior troops after it was ordered Tuesday to disband, according to Russian language news websites.

The "Tornado" Battalion, which is based in northern Lugansk, was ordered by the Ukrainian government to disband after a number of its members and commanders were charged with serious crimes in the conduct of their activities in Lugansk.

A second volunteer battalion, the "Chernigov" Battalion also was ordered to disband, but news accounts say that only Tornado has refused to comply with the demand of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. Chernigov commanders also are accused to participating in the smuggling of coal.

A total of seven members of the "Tornado" Battalion, including a police company commander identified as Ruslan Onishchenko, were detained in several Ukrainian cities including Dnepropetrovsk, Lvov and Severodonetsk and transported to Kiev presumably to face trial.

According to a late news item posted on Russian reserve FSB Colonel Igor Girkin's website, Onishchenko is in intensive care after being beaten nearly to death, according to remarks made by Tornado deputy commander Nikolay Cukur.

A total of 12 men from the Tornado battalion were detained in total, with two released, and two unidentified men other than Onishchenko were being treated for wounds sustained in beatings. The story did not elaborate who, or which agency beat Onishchenko.

Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine and Chief Military Prosecutor Anatoly Matios said that Onishchenko gave orders several times for his charges to commit crimes including physical assault, kidnapping, rape, robbery and torture of both civilians and members of the Tornado Battalion in Lisichansk, in Lugansk.

Chief among problems with the battalion are charges that its members bought and resold coal from the rebels in Lugansk, a charge against the rebel civilian leadership which led to a low level civil war in Lugansk and Donetsk, and cost the lives of several Cossacks loyal to the rebels. Several Cossack units once considered loyal to the rebels were disbanded as well, accompanied by military assaults when those units refused to disband.

Russian military journalist and analyst Boris Rozhin said on Wednesday that the Tornado Battalion consisted of felons released from prison, and had been operating in northern Lugansk since the very start of the hot phase of the civil war in southeastern Ukraine last summer, 2014.

According to Rozhin, Onishchenko went to Kiev seeking to "legalize" the kickbacks he had been paying to unidentified Ukrainian officials, which was when the Ukrainian Interior Ministry is said to have investigated. Rozhin claims the Ukrainian government was well aware of the smuggling and the kickbacks.

The latest, according to two news reports in korrespondent.net, are that the area around the base of Tornado Battalion was mined in anticipation against a general military assault by Ukrainian forces executing a court ordered search warrant. The news reports suggest that Ukrainian interior ministry officials are negotiating with members of the battalion to end the standoff peacefully.

Ukrainian Colonel Andrey Lysenko, spokesman for the Ukrainian ministry of defense denied that the Ukrainian military was planning any military operations against the remaining members of the battalion.

Fighting in Donetsk, Lugnask

Ukrainian media said that rebels launched a pair of infantry assaults supported by mortars on Ukrainian positions in Marinka on Thursday morning, but those attacks were driven back. Losses for the Ukrainians totaled three dead and 14 wounded.

According to a news report in regnum.ru, Colonel Lysenko said that the rebel forces brought heavy artillery closer to the front and commenced shelling Ukrainian positions in Marinka for the rest of the day.

According to data supplied by the rebel government in Donetsk, reported Ukrainian artillery attacks have dropped dramatically since last weekend, when nearly 300 ceasefire violations were reported by both sides. As of Thursday night, reported violations for the Ukrainian side have dropped to eight total for the whole of Donetsk.

Regions reporting Ukrainian artillery are western Donetsk city suburbs, including at the Putilovsky bridge, the airport, Kievskiy district and Spartak, and in Gorlovka.

Lysenko said that rebels violated the ceasefire a total of 40 times, mostly around Artemovsk, where rebel 152mm artillery and mortars struck targets in Artemovsk. Lysenko also said that the rebel artillery firing was originating from Zolotoye, further south.

Artemovsk is a top command and logistical position for Ukrainian forces operating in north central Lugansk and northeastern Donetsk.

Europe
Russian Assets in France, Belgium Seized, Moscow Summons Brussels Envoy
Meanwhile, back in Cold War 2.0 ...
[AnNahar] Russian government assets in La Belle France and Belgium including bank accounts have been frozen in a row over compensation for shareholders of defunct oil giant Yukos, officials and a claimant representative said Thursday.

In La Belle France, accounts in around 40 banks were frozen along with eight or nine buildings, Tim Osborne, executive director of the main shareholder GML, told AFP.

"It's bank accounts and real estate," Osborne explained.

There was no immediate confirmation from officials in Moscow or Gay Paree.

In Belgium, the Russian embassy in Brussels and representative offices at the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...
headquarters were among those affected, the Russian foreign ministry said.

Russia also threatened to take "reciprocal measures targeting Belgian assets in Russia."

It added that the Belgian ambassador to Moscow was summoned to the ministry to explain the move and "was told that Russia considers such action by the Belgian authorities as an openly hostile act."

Yukos was once Russia's biggest oil company but was broken up after the arrest of its owner, Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky, in 2003.

That came shortly after President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
warned Russia's growing class of oligarchs against meddling in politics.

Khodorkovsky was granted residency in Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
after being released in 2013 following a decade in prison after a presidential pardon from Putin.

Last year, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled that Moscow had forced Yukos into bankruptcy with excessive tax claims before selling its assets to state-owned firms.

It ordered Russia to pay Yukos shareholders a record $50 billion (44 billion euros) in compensation.

Russia was told to pay compensation to shareholders to subsidiaries of Gibraltar-based Group Menatep, through which Khodorkovsky ran Yukos.

The group exists today as holding company GML, although Khodorkovsky is no longer involved and is not a party to the compensation claim.

- 'Actions could spread' -
While the precise value of the assets seized is unclear, Russian economy minister Alexei Ulyukayev said it was so far "insignificant" but voiced concern that similar steps could be taken elsewhere.

"The fact itself is of course very unpleasant. We can expect the spread of these actions," he told Russian agencies, while adding that Russia is appealing the arbitration court decision and has no plans to comply with it.

GML's Osborne said that proceedings were "already underway in Britannia and the United States and further countries will follow".

He explained that legislation in Belgium and La Belle France made it easier to freeze assets pending the outcome of the Yukos compensation dispute.

Despite not being involved, Khodorkovsky welcomed the move in relation to the Russian assets in Belgium.

"I am happy about the freezing of our bureaucratic assets in Belgium," he wrote on Twitter. "I expect that the money will go to projects helping Russian society."

His former company -- which had a market capitalization of some $21 billion in 2003 -- was sold off in a series of opaque auctions between 2004 and 2006, with state-owned Rosneft buying up most of its operations.

The Belgian foreign ministry said the seizures had been conducted by bailiffs without the involvement of the Belgian government.

"It's a legal decision which was executed by bailiffs. We were not informed by the bailiffs' office, we do not intervene," ministry front man Hendrik Van de Velde told AFP.

The Permanent Court of Arbitration declined to comment on the issue.

Russian media reported that the move in Belgium also affected state-owned media, including the Russia Today channel and TASS news agency.

TASS front man Dmitry Pertsev told AFP that the agency's property "belongs to Russia, therefore the current situation concerns us."

News form Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco: 'Kennewich man' probably an Indian.
[HuffPoo] The 9,500-year-old skeleton was found in 1996 along the banks of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Wash., and it's been called the most important ancient human skeleton ever unearthed in North America.

But as to Kennewick Man's ethnicity and origins, researchers haven't been able to agree.

Some scientists argued that he was likely related to indigenous Japanese or Polynesian peoples, others said that he had Caucasian features. Still other scientists were convinced that he was probably an ancestor of modern-day Native Americans -- and a new DNA study suggests that, indeed, they're right.

"Using ancient DNA, we were able to show that Kennewick Man is more closely related to Native Americans than any other population," Dr. Morten Rasmussen, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and an author of the study, said in a written statement.

Nobody is safe from feminazis
The beleaguered British biologist Sir Tim Hunt has revealed that he was forced to resign from his post at University College London (UCL) without being given a chance to explain his controversial remarks about women in science. "I have been hung out to dry," he told the Observer in an exclusive interview. "I have been stripped of all the things I was doing in science. I have no further influence."
Crying women have not been viewed as 'jocular' for some time now.
Tim Hunt: 'I've been hung out to dry. They haven't even bothered to ask for my side of affairs'

Hunt, who won the Nobel prize in 2001 for his work on cell biology, was the focus of widespread controversy last week after suggesting at a conference in Seoul that women in science were disruptive and prone to crying. He has since apologized for his remarks, which were supposed to be ironic and jocular, he said.
