-Lurid Crime Tales-
Today's Idiot
Federal authorities say joking about having stuff that goes boom is not funny. But that's apparently what a New York City physician did last week in the passenger terminal of the Rochester Airport.
Even the Fourth Doctor would know better than to joke like that.
It happened Friday morning at the Jet Blue ticket counter. The TSA says that Dr. Hany Mossad-Boktor was asked the standard question about having any slugthrowers in his luggage, and he replied, "no, just a couple of bombs and a little dynamite, but it's no big deal."
Been asleep twenty years, Rip van Winkle?
TSA Federal Security Director John McCaffrey tells WHAM News that is a big deal, in terms of trying to keep the airport safe and the operation running smoothly. He says bomb sniffing dogs were called in to check the man's luggage. It showed no signs of kaboom devices, but he was charged with falsely reporting an incident, which is a felony.
"You'll still get to take a trip, beauzeau; you'll even get state-sponsored accomodations.

#1  I asked one of the ticket counter people, back about 10 years ago, if anyone had ever said "Yes" to one of their questions about handing control of your luggage to someone else, you know the ones.

She said no, she'd never met anyone that dense.

That was in Rochester too though at US Air.

#2  I suppose Holder & Co. will promulgate a rule about not discriminating against Muslim comics. After all, who are we to think we get this kind of sophisticated humor?
There was flying while Muslim and now flying while (Muslim) funny.
Prepping the battle space.

Arabia
Saudi editor faces charges for violating Islamic values
[Al Ahram] Saudi authorities have set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
a Saudi national for setting up a website that "harms the public order and violates Islamic values", court documents and his lawyer said on Tuesday.
Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
, which follows an austere version of Sunni Islam, shows little tolerance towards public dissent and censors its media. Cyber crime regulations that came into force in 2007 make bloggers and website owners legally accountable for what they publish online.

The 25-year-old Ra'if Badawi, who runs the website "Free Saudi Liberals", was charged with cyber crime and also with disobeying his father, which is considered a crime in the conservative Arab monarchy and top US ally.

"He did that by setting up a website that harms the public order and violates Islamic values, including insulting the divine being and attacking some religious icons such as the Grand Mufti," a document from the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution showed.

The Mufti is Saudi Arabia's top religious authority.

Spokesmen from the Justice Ministry and the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution did not respond to calls or messages for comment.

Court documents show the evidence against Badawi includes a post on the website that asks, "is God unjust?", sarcastic remarks about the Saudi inquisitors religious police and a senior scholar, and a post that asks, "why is Saudi's Grand Mufti blind?"

Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...
(HRW) condemned the charges and called for Badawi's release in a report issued on Tuesday.

"Saudi authorities should drop charges and release the editor of the Free Saudi Liberals website for violating his right to freedom of expression on matters of religion and religious figures," the group said in the report.

If convicted, Badawi faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to three million Saudi riyals ($800,000), HRW said.

On Sunday Saudi newspaper al-Watan reported that Saudi Arabia is studying new regulations to criminalise insulting Islam and will include posts on social media where violators will face "severe punishments".

The potential regulations come five months after a Saudi blogger and columnist, Hamza Kashgari, 23, was jugged

members and spit on them to a women's prison in Makkah.

The incident started when a security guard at a mall near the Grand Mosque reported to the Hai'a the improper actions of two girls walking alone.

Hai'a members approached the two girls who were acting inappropriately inside the mall and tried to advise them against such actions. When Hai'a members asked them to leave the mall if they had finished shopping, both girls refused to listen to their advice and decided to call their mother. When the mother arrived at the mall, she used inappropriate language with the Hai'a members and spit on their faces and tried to throw her shoes at them.

the woman and her two daughters. At this point, the father showed up and attacked the Hai'a members.

and referred to Ajiad Police Station where the mother was referred to the BIP and later to prison while the two girls were released on condition that their father would bring them back for questioning later. They will have to go the BIP and then be referred to the relevant court where they will be sentenced.

Hafsa Shuaib, director of Girls' Welfare Center in Makkah, said the two girls were not committed to the center as some websites had claimed and confirmed that they had been released by police. Abdul Rahman Al-Jabri, front man for the Hai'a branch in Makkah, refused to comment and said only the BIP is authorized to answer questions regarding cases.

Bangladesh
Mob kills 3 'robbers'
[Bangla Daily Star] Three robbers were beaten to death by a mob as they tried to flee after looting a house in Narsingdi town early yesterday.

The dead were identified as Noor Mohammad, 35, of Shibpur; and Abdul Jalil, 30, and Anwar Hossain, 30, of Raipura upazila of the district.

A band of 15 to 16 robbers entered the house of Abdur Rashid, a fish trader, at Baduarchar around 3:00am, police quoted locals as saying.

To gain entry into the house, the gang first held caretaker Mohammad Farid at gunpoint and asked him to call Rashid.

As Rashid's son Sharif opened the door, they shoved him in and got inside the house. They tied up Rashid, Sharif and the caretaker. No one else was in the house.

The robbers took away cash and valuables, including gold ornaments and four mobile phones, worth over Tk 5 lakh from the house.

As soon as they stepped out, Farid raised the alarm. Hearing his screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and gave chase. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
all but three of the gang managed to flee.

Soon the crowd of neighbours turned into a mob and beat the three to death.

Police recovered the bodies in the morning and sent them to the morgue of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for an appointment with Dr. Quincy.

Economy
1,400 Projects, $163B invested in Fracking
If you believe every study that you read...
More than $163 billion is currently invested in more than 1,400 active oil and gas projects in the U.S. upstream and midstream segments, Sugar Land, Texas-based Industrial Info Resources said in a report released July 12.

In its report, Industrial Info said about $162 billion is invested in 777 capital projects. More than half of the total amount -- $97 billion -- is invested in 333 active natural gas-related capital projects.
That kinda money, spread out like that, makes it hard for any One to take it out.
"With the advent of economical shale gas, natural gas liquid extraction, and improved pipeline access to the Gulf Coast, development in the oil and gas industries in the U.S. is ramping up," Industrial Info said.

The state of Texas is the leader in NGL-related infrastructure investments and project numbers, while coming in second in total investment value for natural gas projects.

While Alaska comes in third with the total number of projects at 30, the value of those oil and gas investments is the greatest in the nation at more than $51 billion.

Louisiana, with 25 projects, comes in third in project spending at approximately $12 billion in investments.
Three business-friendly states, as well as --
Pennsylvania is second in the nation for the total number of projects, but is fourth in project spending. There are 41 projects under way in the state, representing nearly $3 billion in project spending.

India-Pakistan
If we fail to get majority, will sit in opposition, says Imran
[Dawn] Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) Chairman Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the brightest knife in the national drawer...
said on Tuesday that if his party fails to gain majority in the general elections, it would sit in the opposition, DawnNews reported.

Speaking to media representatives at the 'kid's summer festival', Khan said that the people in the care-taker set-up should be impartial. All parties should be consulted in this regard, he added.

The PTI chairman said that his party was ready for the elections and it would nominate the contestants in every constituency of the country.

Moreover, he said that he would not make alliance with any party that was sitting in the assemblies; however, negotiations are in process with other parties.

He said that the coalition partners of the government should be held equally responsible for the plight of the country.

The PTI Chief demanded the government to publish the names of the people who have been killed in the US drone strikes. Adding that, his party wants an end to the 'war on terror'.

He announced to go and hold a rally in Wazoo on Sep 23.
Betcha it gets boomed.

Probe ordered into razing of university buildings for mosque
[Dawn] The Public Account Committee of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
Assembly on Monday ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the demolition of 13 buildings inside Hazara University, Mansehra
...a city and an eponymous district in eastern Khyber-Pakthunwa, nestled snug up against Pak Kashmir, with Kohistan and Diamir to the north and Abbottabad to the south...
for the construction of a mosque.

The buildings of two boys hostels, a senate hall, museum, laboratories, a bank, the provost's office, bungalows and different departments were pulled down to provide their land for the construction of a mosque by a Saudi prince, sources said.Sources said the decision to demolish the said structures valuing Rs700 million was made at the beginning of 2009.

They said many open spaces were available on the university's premises but the then administration chose to destroy the said buildings for mosque construction.

Provincial assembly speaker Kiramatullah Chagharmatti, who chaired the meeting in Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....
, told Dawn over the telephone that he had ordered the formation of a PAC subcommittee to probe unnecessary demolition of buildings.

He said he wasn't opposed to the construction of the mosque but it should not be built at the cost of the future of students.

The speaker said the officials representing the university in the meeting didn't know the reasons for the building demolition and therefore, he had ordered the formation of a committee to fix responsibility for.

According to him, the committee will consist of two MPA, including Saqibullah Chamkanni, vice chancellor of Hazara University and higher education secretary. The other MPA will be named later.

The committee will ascertain why the decision of mosque construction was made at a place where buildings were already present.

"We will not let the elements responsible for demolition of buildings without punishment. It was a childish decision whosoever made it," he said.

The speaker said the probe committee would recover the Rs700 million cost of buildings from the culpable officials.

"I will personally visit the place to see the damages," he said. He said he had issued directions for halting demolition of more buildings for the construction of mosque.

When contacted, Hazara University vice chancellor Professor Sakhawat Shah said 80 per cent of the work on the said mosque spread over 80 kanals had been completed.

Asked if there was no open space available for the mosque, he said there were a lot of open spaces in the university but it was the decision of the then administration to demolish buildings.

He said neither compensation was paid to the university administration nor were new structures raised at the place of demolished buildings. He said all the buildings were in usable conditions.

NIMBYs Come to Laos and Cambodia
Rooters
Laos halted construction of dam on the lower Mekong River because enviro-wackos from Vietnam and Cambodia complained about the migration of fish and potential harm to the dependent river communities. Thailand would receive most of the electricity generated by the dam.

#1  It's not so much enviro-wackos as it is who gets to benefit from the flow of river water, Thailand's power grid or Vietnam's fishermen.

Since the current government of Laos was elected by the Vietnamese Army back in the 70's, well, why did anyone think anything else was going to happen?
