Update: Authorities say elder of 2 expressed no remorse
West Bend - Two cousins were charged with a felony crime each on Friday in the desecration of Holy Hill and, according to authorities, the older of the two admitted what he did but had no regrets. Tyler B. Groth, 21, of Neosho and David J. Groth, 17, of Hartford each face up to 3 1/2 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted of criminal damage to religious property.
Tyler Groth told investigators that he and his cousin used red spray paint in a spree of vandalism at Holy Hill on Tuesday, according to a criminal complaint. The investigators then asked Groth, according to Washington County Sheriff Brian Rahn, "Do you feel sorry for what you did?" "No," the sheriff quoted Groth as saying. "It was just something I did. I just wanted to have some fun." I'm a rebel, man. Like...what's that dood they killed the other day? Yeah, Al Zimbabwe, man. I'm a badass like him, man...
Tyler Groth was arrested on the Holy Hill grounds on Wednesday, as he and his cousin showed four friends the vandalism from the night before, according to a deputy's report. David Groth ran off that night but was arrested Friday morning, hiding behind a bed in a friend's home in Richfield, Rahn said. David Groth has been charged as an adult. Unlike his older cousin, David Groth refused to speak to investigators, according to Rahn. No physical evidence has been recovered, he said.
Asked why he committed the vandalism, Tyler Groth said in an interview broadcast on WTMJ-TV (Channel 4): "I'm a punk. It's what I do." They love punks in jail. Enjoy it...
Tuesday's date was 6-6-06. In the Bible, the New Testament's Book of Revelation says triple sixes are the mark of the Antichrist. According to the criminal complaint, Tyler Groth said he and his cousin decided to spray paint walls, statues and other parts of Holy Hill because it was "Satan's birthday."
Tyler Groth told investigators that he painted "Hail Satin," a misspelling of Satan, and a devil's face in different places and that he sprayed paint on a statue of Jesus, according to the complaint. Okay. Who thought it was fashion designers and not white punks on dope? Let's see those hands.
Tyler Groth said David Groth painted "I'm glad they killed Jesus" and "Hell Will Rule" in various places on the property, the complaint says.
The cousins made their initial appearance on the charges in Washington County Circuit Court Friday. They told Judge Patrick Faragher that they understood the charges but made no other comments. District Attorney Todd Martens asked the judge to set bail for both, saying the vandalism was "an affront to the faith of tens of thousands of Washington County residents." But public defender Paul Czisny argued that "this is not a day to punish." So when would that day be, counselor? I see a big, shameless, future for you in criminal defense, PD Czisny...
Faragher said he would release Tyler Groth on a signature bond while the case is pending. He said the vandalism is a "very terrible thing" but comparable to "tagging" or graffiti, and "not an assault on the Catholic Church." He also noted that Tyler Groth, who lives with his parents and works at a siding company, had no prior record.
Faragher set $1,000 cash bail for David Groth, a Hartford Union High School student who lives with his parents and is not employed. Both defendants are scheduled to return to court Wednesday.
Rahn said the Holy Hill vandalism appeared to be a prank rather than part of any occult activity. He said he thinks the cousins returned with friends to Holy Hill on the day after the vandalism to show off. Bright boys.
"In their minds, they were proud of what they had done," Rahn said. It's probably pretty crowded in those little minds, so don't be jamming too much stuff in there...

His legs in chains, the man charged with murdering the 10th Earl of Shaftesbury is led to the spot where he dumped the body. Mohammed M'Barek, 41, will stand trial with his sister, Jamila, the earl's third wife, in the south of France later this year. They are accused of murdering the eccentric aristocrat during an argument about divorce arrangements.
Jamila, the sultry 'bar hostess' with a body to die for and her ner-do-well brother Mohammed lured the Earl to his doom.
M'Barek, who is Tunisian-born, was taken to the wooded ravine outside the Riviera resort of Thèoule-sur-Mer last week as part of an 11-hour reconstruction of the crime. The earl's body was represented by a 13st 5lb mannequin, constructed to his precise height and weight.
"Yes! That's him! I'd recognize his weight anywhere! [Sob!]"
Police freed M'Barek's hands only to allow him to show investigators, lawyers and the investigating judge, Catherine Bonnici, how he says he abandoned the body in the ravine. He lifted the model from the car and dragged it through grass until throwing it into the undergrowth concealing a small ravine with a stream.

His 38-year-old sister, a former hooker bar hostess, was not taken to the site because she claims to have remained on the outskirts of Thèoule-sur-Mer while her brother disposed of the body.

But she was involved in attempts to re-enact events at the flat that she and the earl had shared in a plush residential area of Cannes.
She'll be trying to make her story fit the evidence without implicating herself too much.

I left the room because I could not stand to see what was happening."

Lord Shaftesbury, 66, who divided his time between Britain and the south of France, where he was known to frequent hostess bars, disappeared in November 2004. When details of the earl's disappearance were revealed, his wife told The Daily Telegraph she was "as worried as anyone about his safety".
"I'm so worried about poor Tony. Uh, now how long does he have to be missing before I can declare him dead and collect?"
In fact, he was already dead. His body was found four months later. He was cremated in Monaco and buried at his family seat in Wimborne, Dorset. His elder son, Anthony, died of natural causes only five weeks after becoming the 11th earl and was succeeded by his younger brother, Nicholas.

Excellent! Similar run-ins leading to tragic consequences are less rare than some might think. There are LOTS of fools, reduced to morons by alcohol, who tempt fate every damned day (night) in thousands of places. The difference here is that Yon was the victim of the moron's attention.
His bad.
Yon's style isn't for everyone, I guess, but I found this imminently readable and personally very interesting - it brought back so many memories from their dusty corners that I was amazed. I had to let it settle before responding, lest I admit too much, LOL. I knew more than a few in the service who were there under similar circumstances, back when some judges offered it as an alternative.

A new type of hammerhead shark has been discovered in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean, marine scientists say.
The shark resembles a common species called the scalloped hammerhead but has not yet been classified or named.
US researchers say the animal appears to be rare, breeding only in waters off the South Carolina coast.
They believe the shark is at risk of extinction and conservation efforts are needed to protect females when they are raising their pups.
The shark was discovered by a biology professor at the University of South Carolina.
Dr Joe Quattro became curious about a common coastal shark called the scalloped hammerhead shark while studying coastal fish.
Genetic studies revealed that there was a second "cryptic" species - that is, "genetically distinct" from the scalloped hammerhead.
Nursery grounds
The shark appears to breed only in waters off South Carolina, although adults swim into waters off Florida and North Carolina.
"If South Carolina's waters are the primary nursery grounds for the cryptic species and females gather here to reproduce, these areas should be conservation priorities," said Dr Quattro.
"Management plans are needed to ensure that these sharks are not adversely impacted so that we can learn more."
Scientists plan to tag the shark so they can understand more about its range.
Ali Hood, director of conservation at the Shark Trust in the UK, said with only 454 recorded species of shark in the wild, it was exciting to discover another one.
"It shows how small areas of coastline are significant to certain species and it is so important to consider shark conservation on an area by area basis," she said.
CORVALLIS, Ore. A main ingredient in beer may help prevent prostate cancer and enlargement, according to a new study. But researchers say don't rush out to stock the refrigerator because the ingredient is present in such small amounts that a person would have to drink more than 17 beers to benefit.
Over what period? 17 a day might be a bit excessive, but 17 per week is only 2.4 beers a day.
Oregon State University researchers say the compound xanthohumol, found in hops, inhibits a specific protein in the cells along the surface of the prostate gland. The protein acts like a signal switch that turns on a variety of animal and human cancers, including prostate cancer. Cancer typically results from uncontrolled cell reproduction and growth. Xanthohumol belongs to a group of plant compounds called flavonoids, which can trigger the programmed cell death that controls growth, researchers say.
Xanthohumol was first discovered in hops in 1913, but its health effects were not known until about 10 years ago, when it was first studied by Fred Stevens, assistant professor of medicinal chemistry at OSU's College of Pharmacy. Last fall, Stevens published an update on xanthohumol in the journal Phytochemistry that drew international attention.
Stevens says it possible for drug companies to develop pills containing concentrated doses of the flavonoid found in the hops used to brew beer. He also says researchers could work to increase the xanthohumol content of hops.
There are already a number of food supplements on the market containing hops, and scientists in Germany have developed a beer that contains 10 times the amount of xanthohumol as traditional brews. The drink is being marketed as a healthy beer, but research is still under way to determine if it has any effect against cancer. The latest Oregon State University research was published in a recent issue of Cancer Letters.

Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback of the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, was injured in a motorcycle accident on Monday. The team confirmed to WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh that Roethlisberger was involved in the accident, which happened around 11:30 a.m. ET.
KDKA-TV and WTAE-TV were reporting that Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and flew over the handlebars, hit his head on the windshield of another car before falling to the ground. One witness said he was groggy, said his name was Ben and was bleeding from the head. "He was alert and conscious," Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service, told the Associated Press. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting on its website that a veteran city police officer said Roethlisberger hit the windshield "with pretty good force."
Roethlisberger was taken to Mercy Hospital, according to the reports, and there was no word on the extent of his injuries. Pittsburgh police have closed the streets surrounding the scene of the accident.

Nicole Pasquarelli and Ruth Nazoliny, whose high school classmates graduated three years ago, will finally receive their diplomas today after scoring high enough on their 11th attempt at the Massachusetts graduation exit exam.
Education Department spokeswoman Heidi Perlman said the women are the only two people the state knows of who passed the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Systems exam after 10 retries. "I can't emphasize strongly enough how much we applaud these girls," she said. "These girls have been personally committed to their education."
Nazoliny, who graduates from Jeremiah Burke High School in Boston, declined an interview request. Pasquarelli got past the English portion on the first try, but the algebra and geometry on the math section stumped her. "I'm awful at math," she said.
Graduation day in 2003 came and went for Pasquarelli, and she eventually become manager of a pizza restaurant. But she said her struggles did not embarrass or discourage her. After a couple of retests, she figured she had invested too much time to give up. She has been asked to speak at a high school graduation in Middleton. She said she will offer a simple reason to keep on trying amid failure: "To prove to yourself you can do it."

Mercy buckets, JFM. Dr. Steve, I picked him up at my Freshman orientation to the university, two years before he would have gone on to medical school anyway. (Totally ruined my plans for a wild'n'crazy freshman year, too!) Anyhow, he was doing cancer research at the Roswell Park institute with all Daddy's colleagues, and had gone out the night before with a bunch of my schoolmates, so we probably would have met eventually. As you said... ;-)
As for the young ladies, most girls who have that much difficulty with maths just marry a man who'll take care of the checkbook for them. Well done, I say. Although I agree there are definite questions to be asked about the teachers involved.
MANAMA - Former enemies Bahrain and Qatar took another step on Sunday to put the past behind them by signing an agreement to begin the construction of a bridge linking the two Gulf Arab states.
Qatars crown prince Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and his Bahraini counterpart Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa signed an agreement to create a special purpose company that would undertake the project of building a bridge linking the archipelago of Bahrain to the Qatari peninsula to the east, said the official Bahraini news agency BNA. The price of the project was not disclosed but a cost of about two billion dollars was given when the bridge project was first announced in 2000 as the two countries were resolving a territorial dispute.
The signing came after a meeting by the joint commission formed by the two countries after a decades-old territorial dispute between Bahrain and Qatar over Hawar island that led to a war in 1986 and was resolved by the International Court of Justice in March 2001.

Herds of hungry wild elephants are on the rampage. They destroyed at least 250 houses and several hundred acres of orchards in Barunachhari village in Barkal upazila in last ten days.
At least 5000 people have become homeless. Villagers in Barunachhari and adjoining areas now pass sleepless nights, beating drums and making big fires at night to keep marauding elephants away.
A team of newsmen during a recent visit to the remote area saw damaged houses, crop fields and gardens of banana, mango, jack fruit, coconut and other fruits.
Lucky the elephants are vegetarians, or that wouldn't have been all they saw ...
The villagers said elephants come to human habitations just before the evening, search for food throughout the night and leave before dawn. Md. Alam Farazi, a member of Village Defense Party in Barunachhari village said he used to earn about Tk 30,000 from banana and Tk 20,000 from amloki (a kind of medicinal fruit). Elephants completely destroyed his plantations on about five acres.
But with all the amloki they're much healthier elephants now ...
When contacted, Asit Ranjan Pal, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Rangamati South Circle, said he can not blame elephants for attacking human habitations because men are depleting forests and their sources of food and shelter. "I have no power to kill elephants. I have nothing to do except advising villagers to beat drums and make fire at night. It is my duty to protect wildlife".
Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Gazi Md Julhas said, "We have nothing to do. Wild elephants attack human habitations in other areas also in Rangamati. I think the forest department can take steps in this regard".

Seem like the Elephats are drawing the line. I read a story a couple of years ago about them rampaging a village in India and eating their grain stores. What the villagers were most upset about is the barrels of some sort of home made beer that the elephants drank. Drunken, pissed off, rampaging elephants.

Civil servants who were supposed to be administering the government's much-criticised farm subsidies system have been taking part in 'depraved' office pranks such as leaping naked from filing cabinets.
The beleaguered Rural Payment Agency has begun an investigation into the behaviour of its staff at its Newcastle office, which allegedly included leaving cups of vomit in cupboards, taking drugs, having sex in toilets and holding breakdancing competitions during office hours.
The agency, which delayed the payment of £1.5bn worth of European subsidies to thousands of farmers, said it has so far sacked one junior member of staff over the allegations.

For all the bashing of the mainstream media at the YearlyKos convention, the bloggers in attendance clearly wanted to be taken seriously by the reporters covering the convention. Their blogs frequently quoted from mainstream newspaper articles, and they tried to have their photographs taken with the likes of New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd.
But some started to worry about the image they were projecting outside the blogosphere on Saturday when some bloggers started an unusual contest - making the most original tinfoil hat. As dozens of bloggers donned their creations with delight, television crews and newspaper photographers descended on them. Oh, no. This is going to be the B-roll on TV tonight, said one dismayed blogger.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - A moderate earthquake struck off the western coast of Indonesia's Sumatra Island on Monday, the government said. There were no immediate report of injuries or damage. The magnitude-5.9 quake was centered 330 miles southwest of the town of Bandar Lampung, said Agung Mulyo Utomo, a staffer the country's meteorology and geophysics agency.
Local radio station el-Shinta said the quake was lightly felt in Bandar Lampung. Utomo said there were no reports of injuries, damage or a tsunami.
Bandar Lampung is located on the southern tip of Sumatra island and is 155 miles northwest of Jakarta.

(AP) - Most of Florida's west coast was under a tropical storm watch Sunday as the first named storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season spun over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening to bring heavy rain in the next few days. In the evening, Tropical Storm Alberto had maximum sustained wind near 45 mph, up 10 mph from early in the morning, but it was not likely to grow into a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said.
"We do not have any significant changes," said Lixion Avila, a senior hurricane specialist. "The system remains poorly organized."
Alberto is a lopsided tropical storm with the most intense wind and rains massed on the eastern edge of the system, Avila said. The first of the storm's rains swept across the Florida peninsula Sunday with no major reports of damage. Forecasters said that 30 inches of rain could fall over the western half of Cuba, creating a threat of flash floods and mudslides, and that 8 inches could fall over the Florida Keys and the state's Gulf Coast.
At 8 p.m. EDT, Alberto was centered about 360 miles south-southwest of the Florida Panhandle, forecasters said. It was moving north at about 9 mph but was expected to turn northeastward in the direction of central or northern Florida, where it could make landfall early Tuesday, forecasters said.

Be safe, not sorry, as even Tropical Storms are capable of sudden, Hurricane-level, wind gusts. "Not likely to to grow into a hurricane" doesn't mean it can't/won't at last minute. Buy the Spam, buy the Wood, Buy the candles and batteries, etal. and hunker down.

Cautiously optimistic here on the Atlantic side. It's getting a little more organized but still not near hurricane force yet.
We got some rain yesterday....every little bit helps, since the swamps are incredibly dry and there are big patches of brown out there. We're down by at least 5 inches from the usual annual total so far.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Alberto, the 2006 hurricane season's first named storm, strengthened early Monday as it moved over the warm waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico, making its way toward the northern Florida coast, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. NHC issued a hurricane warning for the Gulf Coast of Florida from Longboat Key to the Ochlockonee River, meaning hurricane conditions were expected within the warning area in the next 24 hours.
Alberto was moving toward the north-northwest at about 7 miles per hour, with winds strengthening to near 70 mph. Further wind speed gains were possible and the storm could become the season's first hurricane within the next 24 hours. Alberto formed near Cuba over the weekend and was now located about 190 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida, and about 220 miles southwest of Cedar Key.
NHC's storm track has Alberto making landfall in northern Florida near Tallahassee sometime late Tuesday morning. Other computer models show the track ranging from the far western Florida panhandle to the north-central Gulf Coast of Florida. Energy traders said the projected path of the storm should take it too far east to cause any major disruptions or damage to offshore oil and gas production.

No, Deacon, but I wouldn't consider myself a veteran of this kind of storm.
Ophelia was parked just offshore the week my husband arrived, and Wilma came through two days after I got here. Great timing on our parts, right?? ;)
Anyway, right now from Rantburg's Hurricane Bureau on east Florida's Space Coast....we've been getting steady rain, growing stronger all day. Right now we've got a thunderstorm and I can see the occasional lightning strike from the window.
Most central Florida counties are under a tornado watch until 5pm Eastern time (about 30 minutes left as I write this). So far, they are not expecting major flooding, since we've been in a bit of a drought this year and the rain totals expected (1-5 inches by Tuesday) should be easily handled. The storm is still expected to make landfall tomorrow off the Gulf Coast.
Went to the local Publix, and didn't see anyone freaking out or buying anything other than what they normally purchase. No panicking during our visit to Orlando today, either. Can't say how people are acting along the Gulf, though.
