Britain
UK: PC Police Ban "Yobs"
Police chiefs have sparked fury by banning the word yob — in case it “alienates” teenagers.

Senior cops have ordered staff to find a more polite term for troublemakers when writing crime sheets. The move — backed by Scotland Yard chief Sir Ian Blair — was branded “crazy” last night by rank and file cops and anti-crime campaigners.

Norman Brennan, of the Victims of Crime Trust, said: “If you don’t like being called a yob, stop acting like one. What other words are there for those who act anti-socially and frighten the elderly and vulnerable?”

Glen Smyth, chairman of London cops’ union the Metropolitan Police Federation, added: “It is more important that we get on and deal with people whose behaviour falls below acceptable norms.

“It’s ridiculous to say it’s a slur on all young people.”

Tony Blair used the word in the Commons in 2004, and Labour pledged in its 2005 manifesto to “exclude yobs from town centres”. But the word was banned last week after a Metropolitan police report on safer neighbourhoods wrote of tackling “gangs and yobs” in London.

The term was challenged by Cindy Butts, deputy chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority. She whinged: “I have a problem with the language of ‘yobs’. It sets up and defines too much a ‘self’ and ‘other’.”

Asst Commissioner Tim Godwin told her: “I agree. We won’t use that again.” He immediately banned the word from all official Met documents.

Yesterday there was anger among Tories arriving for the Bournemouth conference. Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, said: “With violent crime and anti-social behaviour soaring out of control on our streets, the public will expect police chiefs to have more pressing matters on their minds.”
I recommend asstards, instead. Descriptive and kinda catchy.

#1  The move — backed by Scotland Yard chief Sir Ian Blair — was branded “crazy” last night by rank and file cops and anti-crime campaigners.

Sir Ian Blair, no stranger to bending over backwards forwards for any turbaned snit.

Norman Brennan, of the Victims of Crime Trust, said: “If you don’t like being called a yob, stop acting like one. What other words are there for those who act anti-socially and frighten the elderly and vulnerable?”

How about, “asshole”, “maggot”, “shithead”, “cretin”, “barbarian”, “fuckface”, “loser”, “assclown”, “fuckwit”, “moron”, “assfuck”, “idiot”, fucktard”, “assface”, “goatfucker”, need I go on?

The term was challenged by Cindy Butts, deputy chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority.

Her name says it all.

She whinged: “I have a problem with the language of ‘yobs’. It sets up and defines too much a ‘self’ and ‘other’.”

As opposed to “good” and “evil” or “shit” and “Shinola”.

#2  Now you see why the UK needs elected sherrifs?

Count yourselves lucky US citizens.

The U.K. has had a soft coup. The people who rule over the U.K. citizens in no way represent the views of the majority.

#3  Absolutely BP - the pendulum can only travel so far in one direction..

And the people who shot Peter Woodhams aren't 'yobs', just plain ol' scum. Sheesh.

#6  Thug seems more appropriate, from Thugee, who IIRC from the Indiana Jones movie, were terrorists from a different time.

But yeah, TW - we don't need to make up more words when so many are available and underutilized!

Growing up saddled with a moniker like Cindy Butts, she became over-sensitive to name-calling.

#22  I've always liked the term "hooligans" and especially the Russian version of "hooliganism" as "any deliberate behaviour which violates public order and expresses explicit disrespect towards the society". [Okay, Mullah/custer, call me a fascist. I'm waiting.]

#24  What would the best way to make an anti-social youth more accepted? "Hug a thug" seems an unlikely way to discourage bad behavior. Has not calling terrorists by their name done any more than convince them that we are weak?

Europe
Oslo: Three Paki sisters shot and killed by brother - Honor Killing?
A 30-year-old man was in police custody and under observation at Ullevål University Hospital Monday after he's believed to have shot and killed all three of his sisters at the family's home in Oslo Sunday night.

The man suspected of murdering his three sisters was himself taken to an Oslo hospital.

The three sisters, aged 13, 24 and 27, lived in the flat in Oslo's Kalbakken district with their three brothers, their wives and children. The 30-year-old brother was the oldest, and police said he functioned as head of the household when the retired patriarch of the family was on one of his trips to Pakistan, as he was this week.

Police said they received a call Sunday night from one of the younger brothers in the home, and he reported "the shooting of a woman." When police arrived they found all three sisters dead.

The eldest brother had fled but was captured within a half-hour and and reportedly told police "it's probably me you're looking for," before he passed out.

He was rushed to the Oslo emergency clinic (Legevakt) and later to Ullevål hospital. Police said they still hadn't been able to question him, because his condition was too unstable.

Police said they therefore had no motive for the murders. Neighbours also described the shootings as baffling, describing the family as "very nice" and "completely normal," noting that they often invited neighbours in for Pakistani food.

Some friends of the sisters, however, told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) that there had been "a lot of quarrelling" within the family.

Investigators from Norway's special crime unit Kripos worked through the night to secure evidence. A police spokeswoman said a pistol was found at the scene that is believed to be the murder weapon.

The sisters' bodies were reportedly found in different places around the flat.

SeeBS Call to arms: Opponents Aim To 'Swift Boat' Murtha

Democrat John Murtha is one of Congress's most vocal opponents of the war in Iraq, but the former Marine's own war record is now coming under fire from a familiar source.

CBS News correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi reports from deep in the heart of Pennsylvania steel country that Rep. Murtha is engaged in a new battle – this one in his own backyard.

This is what Murtha, a Vietnam veteran, is saying: "I don't appreciate these people sitting on their fat backsides at the White House, sending our young people to war when they don't understand the circumstances."

But this is what he's facing: "We are her to 'Swift Boat' John Murtha."

That's right, "Swift Boat." Veterans for Truth – some of the same guys that went after John Kerry's military record in 2004 – is back.

This time, they are gunning for Murtha – who is up for re-election – by questioning his military record and his character.

"Our campaign is entirely negative, but as we all know, negativism is a positive aspect of American politics," said fellow Vietnam vet and former Congressman Don Bailey.

This weekend, they organized a "Boot Murtha" rally.

Murtha, ever the Marine rolled out some heavy political ground support of his own to take them on.

"Jack Murtha's critics don't know Jack," said fellow Vietnam vet and former Senator Bob Kerrey.

"This guy laid his life on the line for us and for our country, and we're not going to let any Swift Boaters, shrimp boaters or anybody else take out Jack Murtha," said another Vietnam vet and the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.

No one thought the 16-term Congressman was in any danger of losing his seat to Diana Irey - his "stay the course" Republican challenger. But the "Swift Boat" guys changed the equation, so Democrats are changing their battle plan.

"Take your dirty politics, shove it where the sun doesn't shine and leave town," is how former Senator and Vietnam vet Max Cleland put it.
Popcorn, anyone? Donate to Irey today!

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Replica American academy gives Jordan's king an authentic school reunion
Hat tip Joanne Jacobs.
SOME people may remember their schooldays with a degree of sentimentality, others have less rosy memories. But few, if any, seek to build a replica of their school. Yet just beyond the dusty outskirts of Amman, a long-held dream of King Abdullah II of Jordan is slowly coming to realisation as builders put the finishing touches to King's Academy, directly modelled on Deerfield, an elite American prep school in New England.

The king spent three years at Deerfield, graduating in 1980 before heading to the UK and Sandhurst, then Oxford.

He has told many of his halcyon times at Deerfield, believing its secular curriculum - with an emphasis on critical thinking, respect and tolerance - are key elements in producing well-rounded pupils. Not to mention potential leadership material, badly needed in a region beset by conflict. It will cost US$28,000 (about £14,970) a year in tuition fees, but some 30% of the student population will be on a scholarship or endowment.

Detention for tardy parents
YJCMTSU
New rule at N.Y. city school
A public school is requiring detention for parents who get their kids to school late.

Under the new rule at the Manhattan School for Children, parents who don’t drop off their children by 8:25 a.m. have to pick up late slips from the principal’s office and go to the auditorium to serve 20 minutes of detention with them.

“The parents need to make the breakfast, get the children dressed and get them to school on time,” principal Susan Rappaport told the New York Post for Sunday’s editions.

Some tardy parents at the school, which has 660 pupils in kindergarten through eighth grade, complained the detention made them late for work.

But others approved, saying they felt humiliated and won’t show up late again.
Lol. Yep, some people pay good money to be humiliated...
