Afghanistan
US Marines assault Taliban town in Afghanistan
Fighting is still under way hours later, with U.S. Marine Harrier jets streaking over the town and dropping flares in a show of force.

Marines have captured several suspects and seized about 66 pounds (30 kilos) of opium.
Really? I'm shocked that a student of Islam would have anything to do with drugs. After all, isn't it unislamic, like everything else they can't seem to handle?

Anyone have any idea what this represents? Do the Taliban take money or a percentage of the drugs directly? I would think that they would prefer the drug because it is probably more negotiable and easier to carry.

A-Pee story. Rest at link.

Muslims Behead Four Christian Orphanage Workers in Somalia
Via JihadWatch
International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Somali Islamic extremists beheaded four Christians after kidnapping them on July 27 in the coastal town of Merca, 56 miles from Mogadishu.

Fatima Sultan, Ali Ma'ow, Sheik Mohammed Abdi, and Maaddey Diil were killed by members of Al-Shabab, an Islamic extremist organization. The Islamists kidnapped and eventually beheaded the Christians after they refused to renounce their faith in Jesus Christ.

On August 4, a junior Al-Shabab militant notified all the families of the victims that the four Christians had been beheaded for apostasy. He described the Christians as promoters of "fitna," a Muslim term for religious discord. The militant, who called himself "Seiful Islam" ("the Sword of Islam"), told the families that the bodies will not be given to them "as Somalia does not have cemeteries for infidels."

One eye witness account said, "All the four apostates were given an opportunity to return to Islam to be released but they all declined the generous offer."
Generous. I s'pose it was, compared to that Yemini gentleman who ran up to his Jewish neighbor, yelled, "Kufr!", and killed him on the spot.
The four Christians had been working for a local NGO that helps orphans in southern Somalia.
It's seeing these two examples before them, the loving behaviour of the Christians who help the least in the community versus the hateful actions of the Muslims toward anyone they can lord over, that's leading to the flood of apostasy that has the religious leadership frothing about losing 6 million believers a year. Well done, Al-Shababers, for speeding up that flood.

Somali Pirates Charge for Expenses While Holding Ship for Ransom
A Somali governor says no ransom was paid for the release of an Italian tug boat that pirates held for four months. But Sanag Governor Mohamed Said Nur told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the pirates were paid $270,000 for food and other supplies used to sustain the 16-member crew of the Buccaneer since April. The vessel was anchored off the coast of Sanag. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has said no ransom was paid for the vessel's release on Sunday.

Somali pirates are normally reimbursed for any expenses they incur as well as receiving a ransom for holding a ship. It is rare for them to accept payment for their expenses only. Somali pirates receive an estimated ransom of up to $2 million a vessel.

#2  Did you subtract out transportation cost, Redneck Jim? The food didn't fly itself out to the vessel by itself, you know. After the cost of labour, fuel and all, the cost per man-meal is probably more realistically $5 or so. Pirate labour is expensive!

At least 30 dead in Sudan clashes
[Iran Press TV Latest] At least 30 people have been killed and several houses destroyed as a result of a latest series of clashes in southern Sudan, according to a government official.

Paul Dhel Gum, an official with the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, also said that a number of civilians had been kidnapped in the fighting.

"There are at least 30 people killed, and there are more than 15 women and children who have been abducted," Gum said Tuesday.

The clashes in the south were between two clans of the Dinka ethnic group - the Luach and the Awan - and were reportedly started over cattle and grazing rights.
Boys will be boys.
A detachment of troops from south of the country was reportedly sent to the area in an attempt to end the fighting. The clashes started on Saturday and lasted until Tuesday morning.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Tajikistan jails five members of Tablighi Jamaat
A Tajik court has jailed five members of the Tablighi Jamaat for anti-government propaganda, continuing a series of tough measures against religious movements not endorsed by Central Asian governments.

Increased fighting in nearby Afghanistan has prompted talks of militants trickling into Central Asia, although local opposition movements say their governments use the Islamist threat as an excuse to crack down on dissent. Mostly Muslim ex-Soviet republics of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have in the last few months reported a string of clashes with what they described as militants linked to nearby Afghanistan's Taliban.

This month, Kyrgyzstan detained six members of Hizb ut-Tahrir for distributing radical propaganda.

Those sentenced in Tajikistan on Monday had faced similar charges of "publicly calling for overthrowing the constitutional order". "The convicts are activists of the Tablighi Jamaat organisation and have been trained in special religious centres and schools of Indonesia, Pakistan and United Arab Emirates," the court said in a statement. Tablighi Jamaat, a group founded in India in 1926, keeps a low public profile and says it does not get involved in politics. But the Tajik government regards it as extremist.

China-Japan-Koreas
Treasury Designates Financial Institution Tied to Nork WMD Proliferation
Only have to do a few banks for the rest to get the message ...
WASHINGTON-- The U.S. Department of the Treasury today designated the Korea Kwangson Banking Corp. (KKBC) under Executive Order (E.O.) 13382 for providing financial services in support of both Tanchon Commercial Bank (Tanchon) and Korea Hyoksin Trading Corporation (Hyoksin), a subordinate of the Korea Ryonbong General Corporation (Ryonbong). KKBC is based in North Korea and has operated at least one overseas branch in Dandong, China.

Tanchon and Ryonbong, were identified by the President as weapons of mass destruction (WMD) proliferators and listed in the Annex to E.O. 13382 in June 2005, and Hyoksin was designated by Treasury in July 2009 for being owned or controlled by Ryonbong. All three entities have been designated by the UN pursuant to UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1718 for their roles in North Korea's WMD and missile programs. E.O. 13382 freezes the assets of proliferators of WMD and their supporters and prohibits U.S. persons from engaging in transactions with them, thereby isolating them from the U.S. financial and commercial systems.

"North Korea's use of a little-known bank, KKBC, to mask the international financial business of sanctioned proliferators demonstrates the lengths to which the regime will go to continue its proliferation activities and the high risk that any business with North Korea may well be illicit," said Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Stuart Levey.

Since 2008, Tanchon has been utilizing KKBC to facilitate funds transfers likely amounting to millions of dollars, including transfers involving Korea Mining Development Trading Corporation (KOMID)-related funds from Burma to China in 2009. KOMID, which has been identified by the President in the Annex to E.O.13382 and designated by the UN pursuant to UNSCR 1718, is North Korea's premier arms dealer and main exporter of goods and equipment related to ballistic missiles and conventional weapons. Tanchon, the financial arm of KOMID, plays a key role in financing KOMID's sales of ballistic missiles. Additionally, Hyoksin, which the UN described as being involved in the development of weapons of mass destruction, sought to use KKBC in connection with a purchase of dual-use equipment in 2008.

Due to KKBC's relationship to Tanchon, Hyoksin, and Ryonbong, today's action is consistent with UNSCR 1718's requirement to freeze the funds of and deny financial services to UN-designated entities. It is also consistent with UNSCR 1874's call to prevent the provision of financial services or any financial assets that could contribute to North Korea's nuclear, ballistic missile, or other WMD-related programs.

Georgia Man Guilty In Terrorism Trial
ATLANTA -- Jurors found a 23-year-old Georgia man guilty Wednesday of aiding terrorist groups. Bubba Jones Ehsanul Islam Sadequee was charged with sending homemade videos of Washington landmarks to overseas terrorists. Prosecutors also say he journeyed to Bangladesh to pursue "violent jihad."

Jurors found Sadequee guilty on all four counts he was charged with. They found him guilty of conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, guilty of providing and attempting to provide material support to terrorists, guilty of conspiracy to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and guilty of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
That's guilty. Guilty, guilty, GUILTY!
Prosecutors say Sadequee could face up to 60 years in prison. In June, a judge convicted Sadequee's friend, Syed Haris Ahmed, of one count of conspiracy to provide material to support terrorism in the U.S. and abroad.

Prosecutors say the pair took a series of videos of the Pentagon and the Capitol and that Sadequee later sent them to suspected terrorists overseas.

Sadequee, who represented himself at trial, dismissed his chatter about jihad as "empty talk" and said he never followed through on any of his boasts. Sadequee told jurors he never helped terrorists. He said the video he shot was "amateurish and useless" and added: "I was not then, and am not now, a terrorist."

Jurors began deliberating on Tuesday and reached their verdicts after about six hours of deliberations.
Sadequee faces up to 60 years in prison.

India-Pakistan
FBI says 26/11 terrorists came from Karachi, confirms Pak link
Reinforcing the Pakistan link to the Mumbai terror attack, the FBI on Wednesday told a special court their probe had established that terrorists had come from Karachi to this city and the Global Positioning systems (GPS) recovered from them also indicated their plan to return to Pakistan.
But don't bother to return any of the bodies to Pakistain because the people there don't know the perps. Not a one, nope, nope ...
In a crucial testimony at the trial of the lone surviving gunman Ajmal Kasab, an official of the US' Federal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) which is giving evidence for the first time in India in terror cases said the terorists had used the GPS, a satellite navigation system to locate targets.

Deposing in person before Special Judge M L Tahaliyani, a forensic expert of the US' Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose identity has been kept secret, said one of the GPS devices allegedly recovered by Mumbai Police from slain terrorists also indicated that they had planned return journey from Mumbai to Rawalpindi.

Two other GPS devices indicated plans for return journey from Mumbai to Karachi but one indicated from Mumbai to Rawalpindi, the expert said.

Kasab, a Pakistani national, sat smiling all through while the FBI official gave the evidence.

The planned return journey from Mumbai to Rawalpindi showed that the terrorists were given practical training in Pakistan to use GPS, special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told PTI. The forensic expert said that "Way Point" data retrieved from the GPS devices pointed to the route from Karachi to Mumbai and also positions between these two cities.

The FBI official said he had examined five GPS devices and a satellite phone which Mumbai police had recovered from the terrorists.

Eight Taliban killed in Orakzai Agency
Unidentified men on Tuesday killed eight Taliban in Orakzai Agency and abducted two others, said locals and official sources.

The official sources told Daily Times that armed men attacked a Taliban vehicle -- en route to Mashti Bazaar from Ghaljo area -- in Garhi village, killing eight Taliban, including a brother of Taliban commander Sakhi. They said the Taliban killed in the attack were members of the Mashti tribe.

Locals said the assailants could be Taliban from a rival group of Mufti Ziaur Rehman from the Akhel tribe.

In apparent retaliation to the killings, Taliban from the Mashti tribe abducted at least 50 Akhel tribesmen, including 16 Taliban.

Local residents said although Taliban from both sides had taken positions to attack each other, a Taliban commander from Alikhel tribe had started reconciliation efforts and called a meeting of tribal elders.
I'm confused: is this really two different groups of Taliban, or traditional inter-tribal feuding?

Taliban burns down schools
Taliban militants burnt down seven primary schools in northwest Pakistan, where children recently resumed their studies after the area was declared safe by the army, officials said on Tuesday. "Three boys' and four girls' primary schools were set on fire by militants late Monday in Buner district," district police chief Abdul Rasheed told AFP. No one was hurt in the attacks as the schools were closed for the night, he said, but the buildings were burnt to the ground.

Shams-ul-Arifeen, the education secretary of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), confirmed the incidents.

Schools reopened in the restive area of Pakistan's northwest on August 1. They had been closed for nearly three months as the military pursued a fierce offensive to crush the Islamist hardliners in three districts including Buner.

Mehsud killed while getting 'leg massage'
A US drone fired two missiles at a Taliban commander's house in Laddah tehsil of South Waziristan on Tuesday, killing 10 Taliban, said officials and a Taliban spokesman. "The drone targeted Taliban commander Abdur Rahim Burki's house ... local sources have confirmed 10 casualties," said the officials. Another account put the death toll at 14 and the number of injured at seven. A Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq confirmed the strike, but said only six Taliban had been killed.

Last Wednesday, Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud and his wife were reportedly killed in a drone strike in the same area. The Taliban spokesman, Tariq, also called AP, and repeated assertions that "Baitullah is still alive".

Meanwhile, CNN reported on Monday that TTP chief Baitullah was killed last week during a CIA drone attack while getting a leg massage on the roof of his father-in-law's house, according to the AFP news agency. Citing an unnamed US official, CNN said, "US surveillance in Pakistan spied a short, stocky man resembling the physical description of Baitullhah on the roof of his father-in-law's home in South Waziristan."

Taliban in Orakzai Agency announced on Tuesday that they would not attack security forces during Ramzan and Taliban sharia courts would remain closed "until the tenth day of Eid". The group's spokesman in the agency told journalists over the telephone that the Taliban leadership in Orakzai had decided to halt attacks on security forces during the holy month. He said Taliban sharia courts in the agency would remain closed from today (Wednesday) until the 10th day of Eid. JI to take out 'Go America Go' rally on Aug 18
[Geo News] Jamat-e-Islami Pakistan (JIP) said it will take out "Go America Go" rally on August 18 in protest against the extension of US embassy here in Islamabad. Ameer JIP Syed Munawar Hassan will be leading the rally, party sources said on Tuesday. This was stated by the president and the rally coordinator JI Islamabad Syed Muhammad Bilal.

"The rally will commence its journey at 5pm evening from Aabpara and will be bound up to France Chowke on Shahra-e-Dastoor", he said and revealed, "The setting up of a US army base in the name of extension of US embassy is entirely unacceptable." Over one thousand US marines troops are being imported to Pakistan, he accused.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel tells nationals: Leave Sinai immediately
The Counter-Terrorism Bureau in the Prime Minister's Office warned Israelis to exercise caution when traveling abroad during the Jewish holidays, due to the assessment that Hezbollah may try to attack Israeli citizens, and urged citizens in Sinai to leave immediately.

In issuing its report on Tuesday, which it does regularly before Rosh Hashanah and Passover every year, the bureau stated the bulletin "did not involve new warnings, but rather a current assessment."

It cautioned Israelis to be vigilant regarding anything unusual, and to refrain from traveling to Muslim countries subject to specific travel warnings. These countries include Jordan, Morocco and Egypt (including Sinai).

Particularly high-level warnings have been issued regarding Sinai. An estimated 40,000 Israelis are currently there, most of them Israeli Arabs on vacation before Ramadan begins on August 20.

Other countries subject to travel warnings include Colombia, especially in light of specific information about the potential for attacks on Israelis providing security assistance to the Colombian government. High-level threats also have been issued for the Kashmir region, Mindanao in the Philippines, and parts of southern Thailand.

The Counter-Terrorism Bureau also recommends deferring unessential travel to Kenya (especially coastal areas), Bangladesh, Nigeria and Tajikistan.

Despite the warnings, Israeli tour operators are organizing trips to Jordan, Morocco and Kenya, as well as other countries where the threat is deemed high. Arkia Airlines is offering a safari package to Kenya and Uganda. Organized groups and individual Israelis visit Morocco regularly.

Israelis abroad are advised to refuse offers from unknown or suspicious individuals, and to refuse unanticipated invitations to isolated locations. They should meet with foreigners only in the company of other trusted individuals, and not allow unknown or suspicious individuals to enter their hotel rooms. Those abroad for extended periods are advised to vary their routines and change hotels.

The warning about an attack by Hezbollah, supposedly as revenge for the assassination of Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus, comes despite the fact that Israel never has admitted to being behind the killing. Fatah 'old guard' ousted in polls
The Palestinian political party Fatah rejuvenated its leadership at its first congress in 20 years, ousting many of an "old guard" dominant under the late Yasser Arafat, initial results showed on Tuesday.

But electing younger men to the Central Committee, including Marwan Barghouthi who is serving life in an Israeli jail and several security chiefs, will not bring instant change in the ability of Fatah's leader President Mahmoud Abbas to make peace with Israel - or with Hamas. "This is an unexpected result. It's a big change, a huge change," said Naser al-Kidwa, a nephew of Abbas's charismatic predecessor Arafat who also won a Central Committee seat.

Abbas, though a veteran at 74, had himself urged the party to renew itself, seeking to restore popular support. Years of corruption, poor governance and the failure to end Israeli occupation saw Hamas win a parliamentary election in 2006 and humiliate Fatah forces to take control in Gaza a year later. Abbas cautioned on Tuesday that the results were not final, and there were indications that a recount would be called in at least one very close race. Abbas, who has struggled to fill Arafat's patriarchal role, would be strengthened by the outcome, analysts agreed. Hamas would no longer have the pretext that it was dealing with a weak and divided Fatah, said former Palestinian diplomat Abdullah Abdullah. Abbas would also be in a stronger position vis-a-vis Israel, he said.

Qurie: Among those older figures who dominated in decades of exile before the Oslo interim peace deal of 1993 was Ahmed Qurie, once a top negotiator, prime minister and among Arafat's first allies in the 1960s. Qurie failed to keep a seat, early results showed. After years of internal haggling since Arafat's death in 2004 over whether even to hold the first Fatah elections since 1989, many of the "young guard" - mostly middle-aged men raised under Israeli occupation rather than in exile - had despaired of unseating what they saw as a gerontocracy clinging to power.

Of 18 members elected to the new Central Committee, only one lives abroad. Abbas will no longer have to go to Amman, Jordan, to convene meetings to suit exiled members. More than half the members are new to the decision-making body. Some analysts see younger leaders in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as more ready to compromise to clinch a deal with Israel at the expense of historic claims dating to Israel's creation in 1948, when half of Palestine's Arab population became refugees.

However, the election of figures like Mohammed Dahlan and Jibril Rajoub, who made their names running security units, is a reminder of armed conflict, not just with Israel but with Hamas, for whom the Gazan Dahlan is a particular object of mistrust. Hamas in Gaza was reserved in its response. On the streets of the blockaded coastal enclave, many welcomed the prospect of a new start, however: "The fact that the winners were from the young generation was positive," said Mohammed Mrad, 40. "We hope that the youth will correct the mistakes of the past."

#1  ...at the expense of historic claims dating to Israel's creation in 1948...
If true, that could be big. I remain skeptical however. After all, these are Paleos we're talking about. Just another opportunity to miss an opportunity?

#2  Some analysts see younger leaders in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as more ready to compromise

Ah yes, the mythical, wishfully thinking Some. There have been reports from the congress about Abbas, etc demanding as non-negotiable the entirety of Jerusalem as the capitol of the new Palestinian state, whereas before they only demanded the old, "Arab" section, and the insistance on continuation of all forms of resistance against Israel -- including violence... I don't think the driving ideas will have changed with the coming of the 50-year old "youths", and possibly not even the language and tone. Only they'll be talking to Israel in Hebrew as well as to the world in English, which gives an extra opportunity to say something different to each audience.

Soldier wounded in bombing in southern Thailand
A bomb injured one paramilitary ranger Wednesday morning while two villagers were wounded Tuesday night in bombings in the southern border province of Pattani.

A paramilitary ranger was injured in an explosion while investigating a suspicious object in Kapho district according to local authorities. The soldier is being treated in hospital.

Meanwhile, Sapi-ing Sama and Yagi Wamae were injured in a bombing Tuesday night near a school in the provincial seat. An initial investigation by police and the forensic science unit found that a remote controlled bomb had been hidden in a metal box at an electric pole opposite the school. At a crime scene, security personnel also found fragments of the box, batteries, wires, an electric bulb, a switch and a remote control device. The incident is believed to have been done by terrorists insurgents, according to local investigators.

As violence has escalated in Pattani, the police have been instructed to be more careful when they are on duty. They were ordered not to inspect any suspicious material by themselves but to wait for a bomb disposal team.

Chinese sell SAMs to Iran

#1  This reminds me of the T62 and T72 tank sales to Iraq. When we hit the tanks sand poured from the turrets. Now Iran is buying and building a missile that hit at a 70% best rate, un jammed. Hell an open sighted .50 cal would be a better ADA weapon.

#2  ION CATHAY, WMF > CHINA FEARS INDIA'S BRAHMAPUTRA DAM PROJECT ["Water War"]; + CHINA READY: ALL MISSLES AIMED AT NEW DELHI/ ANDREI PINKOV: CHINA, INDIA MILITARILY BUILDING UP FOR FUTURE/NEW WAR.

VARIOUS > FUTURE SINO-INDIAN WAR = CHIN is likely to preemptively strike and destroy India's largest cities, + perm takeover NORTH KOREA, TIBET, BHUTAN, ARUNUSCHAL PRADESH + SIKKIM, etc. disputed regions. INDIA anticipated by most analysts to come out the loser.

IOW, it'll be a war for TOTAL DOMINATION = CONQUEST OF SOUTH ASIA + DISPUTED SOVEREIGNTIES, including fighting outside of CHIN andor INDIA proper. CHIN is repor reorganizing its MILREGIONS to wage = fight SEVERAL REGIONAL ASIAN WARS AT ONCE???

Two Iranian Women Arrested for Converting to Christianity
Via JihadWatch
In a dramatic session before the revolutionary court this past weekend, documented by Elam Ministries, Maryam Rustampoor (27) and Marzieh Amirizadeh (30) were told to recant their faith in Christ. Though great pressure was put on them, both women have refused to give in. Maryam and Marzieh were originally arrested on March 5, 2009 and have suffered greatly while in prison, suffering ill health, solitary confinement and interrogations for many hours while blindfolded. In a dramatic court room, the deputy prosecutor, Mr. Haddad, questioned Maryam and Marzieh about their faith and told them that they had to recant in both verbal and written form. They responded, "We will not deny our faith."

As the questioning continued, Maryam and Marzieh made reference to their belief that God had convicted them through the Holy Spirit. Mr. Haddad told them, "It is impossible for God to speak with humans." Marzieh asked him in return, "Are you questioning whether God is Almighty?" Mr. Haddad then replied, "You are not worthy for God to speak to you." Marzieh said, "It is God, and not you, who determines if I am worthy."

French embassy staffer leaves Iran prison: govt
[Al Arabiya Latest] French embassy staffer Nazak Afshar, on trial on charges related to post-election protests in Iran, has left the Tehran prison where she was being held, the French presidency said Tuesday, as opposition leaders say 69 people were killed in protests after the disputed June election.

President Nicolas Sarkozy spoke to the French-Iranian dual national after she was released from the prison where French lecturer Clothilde Reiss, also on trial, is still being held, it said.

Reiss, who is allowed to live in the French embassy during the case, and Afshar were among defendants tried on charges related to huge protests across Iran after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared re-elected in June.

Meanwhile the opposition said more than double the official toll of 26 protestors had been killed during the June protests and parliament has promised to investigate, pro-reform newspapers said.

Many conservatives have joined an outcry led by reformist opponents of Ahmadinejad over the treatment of more than 4,000 people officials say were detained throughout Iran during demonstrations after the vote.

The opposition says the poll was rigged, a charge denied by Iran's authorities, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has accused Western powers of inciting the unrest.
