-Lurid Crime Tales-
Peru's Murderous Fat-Stealing Gang: Crime or Cover-Up?
Much of the world was shocked and titillated by news of alleged fat-stealing murderers in the Peruvian jungle. But the story may have a much more sinister underbelly. Could the allegation of homicidal liposuction possibly be a smokescreen to distract attention from other crimes, including, some local journalists say, the existence of a death squad that may be operating within the country's national police?

Seattle Police Kill Suspect In Officer Slayings
SEATTLE -- The man suspected of gunning down four police officers in a suburban coffee shop was shot and killed by Seattle police early Tuesday, a sheriff's spokesman said.

Maurice Clemmons was shot to death in a working-class south Seattle neighborhood after police tracked him down using possible hiding spots supplied by Pierce County investigators, said Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the county sheriff.

Authorities suspect Clemmons, 37, of killing the four Lakewood officers at a coffee shop Sunday morning in Parkland, a Tacoma suburb about 35 miles south of Seattle.

Police said they aren't sure what prompted Clemmons to shoot the officers as they did paperwork on their laptops. Clemmons was described as increasingly erratic in the past few months and had been arrested earlier this year on charges that he punched a sheriff's deputy in the face.

At the scene, a couple of dozen police officers milled around, shaking hands and patting each other on the back after one of the largest manhunts in the region's history.

Clemmons had stayed on the run for nearly two days with help from a network of friends and family who gave him places to stay, medical aid, rides and money, police said. On Monday, officers detained a sister of Clemmons who they think treated the 37-year-old suspect's gunshot wound.

"We believe she drove him up to Seattle and bandaged him up," Troyer said.
Fine with me if they summary execute the sister and "network of friends" as well, the worthless bastards. More at the link.

#10  This afternoon the Pierce County police announced the arrest of 4 persons that 'provided comfort', and the pending booking of the individual that is suspected of driving the getaway car. he ( as of 4 pm west coast time) was locked up and the formal bookinf was imminent. the DA was on record as asking for 2 million bail as he was a flight risk. there was also mention made of several others being investigated and the likely arrest.

i would have thought that accesssory to murder was the valid charge; maybe this lesser one has a higher probability of getting a guilty verdict.

and there is the predictable loonie left that is questioning the Seattle PD in their shooting of this POS, because after all' at night all black men look alike.'

Party crashers e-mailed Pentagon official
WASHINGTON - The couple who crashed the Obama administration's first state dinner communicated with a senior Pentagon official about going to the event, but the official denies that she helped the couple get in.

Michele Jones, a special assistant to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, said in a written statement issued through the White House on Monday evening that she never said or implied she would get Michaele and Tareq Salahi into the Nov. 24 White House dinner.

"I specifically stated that they did not have tickets and in fact that I did not have the authority to authorize attendance, admittance or access to any part of the evening's activities," Jones said. "Even though I informed them of this, they still decided to come."

This is the latest twist in the unfolding mystery of how the two reality show wannabes managed to get into the highly secured event and shake hands with President Barack Obama. Also on Monday, a House committee chairman asked the couple, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan and White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers to testify at a hearing Thursday on the incident.

WTTG-TV, the Fox affiliate in Washington, reported late Monday that the Salahis also crashed a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Awards dinner on Sept. 26 at which Obama spoke. The station's Web site quoted a foundation representative, Lance Jones, as saying the Salahis were escorted out by security guards after they were caught sitting at a table.

The station said that when the Salahis showed up at the dinner, they were followed by TV cameras from Bravo, which airs the "Real Housewives" reality programs, but were turned away at the door. WTTG reported that the Salahis later sneaked in through a busboy-catering entrance, and the station's Web site posted photos purported to be from the Black Caucus event.

Most the attendees at the event did not have access to Obama, WTTG reported.

A call to the Secret Service seeking comment was not immediately returned late Monday.

The White House issued Michele Jones' statement after questions were raised about communications between the administration and the couple prior to the state dinner. The White House did not provide details about Jones' relationship with the couple. Jones spoke at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver on Obama's behalf, and is currently a Pentagon-based liaison with the White House.

A friend of the couple, McLean, Va., real estate agent Casey Margenau, said in an interview with The Associated Press that the couple interpreted an e-mail exchange as permission to attend the exclusive White House event. Margenau said he did not personally see the e-mails and did not know with whom the couple was corresponding.
Auuh yes, the onion it does peel. Command Sergeant Major Michele S. Jones is the first woman to serve as the Command Sergeant Major of the Army Reserve. She is the highest ranking enlisted African-American female solider in any military branch, and the highest-ranking enlisted African-American solider in the Army Reserve. Awards include both German and Thai para wings! Impressive, nicely groomed. Doubt she's ever met the Obama family.

Beauty Queen Dies After Cosmetic Surgery on Her Buttocks
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — A 38-year-old former Miss Argentina has died from complications after undergoing cosmetic surgery on her buttocks.

Solange Magnano, a mother of twins who won the crown in 1994, died of a pulmonary embolism Sunday after three days in critical condition following a gluteoplasty in Buenos Aires.

Close friend Roberto Piazza said the procedure involved injections and the liquid "went to her lungs and brain."

"A woman who had everything lost her life to have a slightly firmer behind," he said.

Dr. Gonzalo Cortes y Tristan said she arrived at his hospital with an acute respiratory deficiency. Her condition deteriorated until she suffered the embolism.

#1  Argentina will probably let the drilling proceed, and if anything of substance is discovered, demand a share, which of course would not be given. #5  As bad a shape as the Brit military is in today, the Argies are in much worse. Their economy could not afford the smallest war -- I don't think they can even afford a brush fire or a police action, and maybe can't afford a border disturbance (a coup they can always afford).

Africa Subsaharan
Unbridled imports crippling USA Nigeria
Despite huge natural resources and vast tracts of arable land, Nigeria, sub-Saharan Africa's second largest economy and the continent's most populous nation, largely relies on imports.

The once agro-driven and food self-reliant economy, Nigeria has in recent decades relied more and more on oil, becoming a net importer of even the most basic goods.

"We import almost everything, from the important items such as food and medicines to the frivolous ones such as toothpick and razor blade," said Ibrahim Ayagi, economic adviser to former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

President of Equatorial Guinea on course to extend three-decade rule
Here's another surprising election result. Daley and the boys in the precincts of Bridgeport could learn from these guys.
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea, who has ruled for three decades, is to extend his grip on power for seven more years after winning 96.7% of the vote in an election. The figure was published on the government's website today after returns from about a quarter of voting stations, but the opposition has refused to accept the result amid accusations of fraud and intimidation. The Convergence for Social Democracy, one of the few parties that contested the presidential poll, said one of its electoral officials was forced with a pistol held to his head to sign off on a vote count. It also said that district and provincial electoral officials voted for entire populations in villages. Final results are expected on 7 December.

Turnout appeared weak, according to a witness in the capital Malabo, with polling stations guarded by soldiers, and streets empty after a temporary ban on car travel was imposed last week.

Human rights groups describe the government of Equatorial Guinea as one of the most corrupt and abusive in the world. Ahead of the vote, Human Rights Watch, the New York-based group, said the government had stifled and harassed the country's beleaguered political opposition, denying it equal access to the media, and imposing serious constraints on international observers.

The former Spanish colony has been ruled by Obiang since 1979, when he seized power from his uncle in a coup. In the last presidential election in 2002, Obiang took 97%. Earlier this month, he vowed to exceed that margin, calling himself the "candidate of the people."

Obiang has faced several threats from abroad, including a 2004 coup attempt led by Simon Mann, the former British mercenary who was pardoned in November and freed from a sentence of 34 years' jail for his part in the plot. Earlier this year seaborne gunmen suspected to be militants from Nigeria's unstable Niger Delta attacked his palace.

Obiang faced growing criticism that the country's oil wealth has not improved conditions for the 650,000 inhabitants of this tiny west African state.
Was it supposed to? Has it ever? Oil is poison to an underdeveloped state.
HRW says Obiang's rampant corruption drains funds that could be used for education and health care, pointing out that development indicators are among the lowest in sub-Saharan Africa even though Equatorial Guinea is the richest country in the region on a GDP-per-capita basis.

Obiang's eldest son and possible successor, known by his nickname Teodorin, is accused of financing a lavish lifestyle with his total spending on mansions, exotic cars, and other luxury goods in 2004-2007 amounting to almost double the government's 2005 budget for education.

Arabia
Dubai & Abu Dhabi markets plunge on debt woes
[Al Arabiya Latest] Stock markets in the Gulf emirate of Dubai and its neighboring capital of Abu Dhabi fell sharply on Monday and then ground to a halt amid a lack of buyers after Dubai World's shock proposal to suspend debt payments.

Dubai's benchmark DFM Index dropped by 7.30 percent as leading securities, including construction and finance, plunged almost by the maximum-allowed limit of 10 percent at the opening, which followed the four-day Eid holiday.

The market was trading in the midday session at 1,940.36 points, down 152.80 points from Wednesday's close, just before the Dubai government's shock announcement it wants to freeze debt repayments by Dubai World conglomerate for at least six months.

The DFM Index finished trading on Wednesday at 2093.16, up around 28 percent this year, though still two-thirds below its all-time highs two years ago.

The financial market of oil-rich Abu Dhabi also reacted negatively to Dubai's debt woes, dropping 8.24 percent to 2,670.44 points in midday deals.

The two markets have so far shed around $10 billion of their market capitalization.

Trading almost froze in both markets amid high offers to sell and negligible offers to buy, with Dubai market registering only 31.5 million dirhams ($8.6 million) in turnover -- less than 10 percent of average daily trade this year.

"This was expected because markets have panicked over exaggerated reports in the Western media," Al-Fajr analyst Hamam al-Shamaa told AFP.

"We expect to see many foreign portfolios withdrawing from the market. Their exit obviously terrifies local investors," he said, adding that the drop will continue on Tuesday.

"I do not expect investors to enter the market. Tomorrow will most likely be a similar day," he added, pointing out that the markets go into another four-day holiday starting Wednesday.

But he expected local markets to bounce back after the holiday. "I expect good news during the holiday," he said.

Caribbean-Latin America
Caracas liquidates 2 of seized private banks
[Iran Press TV Latest] The Venezuelan government is intending to liquidate the assets of two of the four banks it has recently taken over.

While the government will maintain the control of the Canarias and BanPro banks, as "they had been severely compromised," the Venezuelan Finance Minister Ali Rodriguez announced on Monday that the government will liquidate Bolivar Banco and Banco Confederado.

Rodriguez said 92 percent of depositors at Banco Canarias and 97 percent at Banpro will get their money back, reported The Wall Street Journal.

The owner of the banks Ricardo Fernandez Barrueco, was put behind bars last week on charges of illegally using depositors' money. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

More than 70 percent of banks in the Latin American country are privately owned. The four banks in question are responsible for about 8.8 percent of banking activity in Venezuela, according to official figures.

Former Guerilla Leader Wins Uruguay Election
But I think we all saw this coming ...
A former guerilla leader who campaigned on a platform of continuing the ruling party's moderate policies has won Uruguay's presidential run-off election. Results show Jose Mujica, a former leftist rebel who spent 14 years in prison, was elected president on Sunday after gaining a little over 50 percent of the vote. His opponent, former president Luis Alberto Lacalle, conceded the election.

In a jubilant victory speech Sunday night, Mr. Mujica thanked a crowd of cheering supporters as well as his rivals and President Tabare Vazquez.

Mr. Mujica will replace President Vazquez, who is barred from seeking a second consecutive term. His victory keeps the center-left Broad Front coalition in power for another five years.

Mr. Mujica has pledged to unite the country using dialogue and diplomacy, citing Brazil's President (Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva) as a role model. He has also promised to maintain the fiscal policies of the popular Vazquez administration, which have helped Uruguay's economy expand despite the global recession.

In the 1960s, Mr. Mujica was part of the Tupamaro guerrilla movement that used bank robberies, political killings and kidnappings to fight Uruguay's conservative government. He was imprisoned during most of Uruguay's military dictatorship from 1973 to 1985.

Uruguay organized Sunday's run-off vote after Mr. Mujica fell just short of winning an absolute majority in the October election.

Honduras: Elected President focuses on future
TEGUICGALPA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The elected President of Honduras, Porfirio Lobo of the National Party (PN) said on Monday that his main concern is the future, starting on June 27, 2010 when he will take office and begin a four-year term.

Lobo said in a press conference that he is willing to start the national dialogue to solve the political crisis in the country, However, he said the issue related to the de facto President Roberto Micheletti and ousted President Manuel Zelaya will be decided by the National Congress on Dec. 2.

Lobo said that the National Congress is the one in charge of giving a sentence on Zelaya's restitution, as it was established at the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Agreement (TSJA), which was signed by both sides. However, Lobo said, "the Micheletti-Zelaya issue is related to the future of Honduras, the one deciding Zelaya's restitution is the National Congress."

Lobo added that everybody will be invited to the dialogue beyond their political opinions and views, or social sectors, "We are not going to agree on everything, but at least on fundamental issues, like the welfare of the Honduran people."

Lobo insisted that the electoral process is not related to the events of June 28, when Zelaya was ousted and taken by force to Costa Rica.

Lobo added that he is not thinking about running for the reelections, according to him, his main concern is to solve the problems Honduran people face daily, "If I make a reform (to the Constitution) it will not be for personal reasons, but in order to bring benefits to the people."
Ahem, that's not a completely trustworthy statement. What if you decide that you're the benefit to the people?
The outcomes gave the triumph to Lobo with 56 percent of the votes, while the second place was for the candidate of the ruling Liberal Party, Elvin Santos with 38 percent of the votes. On Saturday night, Santos accepted his defeat and he urged his followers to accept the defeat and continue working with the winning party in favor of Honduras.

China-Japan-Koreas
Report: NK Turning Into China`s `Industrial Waste Dump`
Hat tip One Free Korea/Josh Stanton.
North Korean organizations in charge of raising foreign currency are bringing in and burying industrial waste from China for money, a report released yesterday said. The report also said North Korean scientists who complained that their country is turning into China’s industrial waste site have been purged in North Korea.

Daily NK, a media outlet on North Korean affairs, quoted a source in the North’s South Hamkyong Province as saying, “The soil survey research center at Hamhung Institute of Technology released a research paper on its study of land pollution resulting from burial of industrial waste from China and a letter urging countermeasures to the Central Committee of the (North Korean) Workers’ Party. The institute was dismantled and senior officials and researchers were all purged.”

“The research paper details how China’s industrial waste is sent to North Korea and dumped,” the source said, adding, “It also strongly warns against the practice of North Korean factories lacking sewage treatment facilities and freely dumping sewage into rivers freely.”
There isn't a thing Kimmie won't do for hard cash, is there ...
One North Korean scientist said, “Our country in effect is turning into China’s industrial waste site,” adding, “Even tap water in Pyongyang has become so polluted that it is no longer potable.”

The source also said North Korean scientists sent the research paper and the letter to committee secretary Choe Tae Bok. The committee soon closed the institute and purged its staff, saying, “The scientists violated rules by reporting the matter directly to the party secretary without going through the required process.”
Climate scientists in the west worry about their reputations, their grants and their futures. This is what happened to real scientists in North Korea.
North Korea is reportedly taking in foreign industrial waste in secret in the form of its border trade with China.

Dong Yong-seung, head of the economics and security team at Samsung Economic Research Institute in Seoul, said, “Though no data is available that can tell us the exact situation, Chinese companies might believe that sending industrial waste to North Korea for burial is cheaper than disposing of it in China in compliance with Chinese environmental regulations.
Given what an industrial wasteland parts of China have become, it makes you wonder just how bad North Korea is.
North Korea is also not just bringing in waste just from China. Former North Korean defector Kim Heung-kwang, now head of a coalition of former North Korean intelligentsia in South Korea, said, “Companies that earn foreign currencies brought in waste vinyl from Germany and France for 300 U.S. dollars per ton in early 2000 and buried it in soil.”

Certain North Korean agencies that raised foreign currency earned double profit by reselling goods China and other countries paid to have thrown away instead of disposing of them.

Former North Korean defector Kang Chol-hyon, now a researcher at the Institute for National Security and Strategy in Seoul, said, “Agencies that raise foreign currency bring in thrown away plastic containers, tires and cooking oil from China and elsewhere, and often sell them on the market.”

New $100 billion safety net for jobless in works
As unemployment spikes, the cost of compassion is going up too.

By as much as $100 billion.

That's the potential price of a push by Democrats in Congress to continue providing extra help to the jobless beyond the core 26-week unemployment insurance package provided under permanent law.

The jaw-dropping numbers combine the approximately $85 billion cost of continuing emergency benefits through 2010 for the long-term unemployed — jobless more than six months — plus an estimated $15 billion to continue subsidies to help pay health insurance premiums.

Even before the last new round of extended benefits in November, the cost of unemployment compensation was estimated by the White House to exceed $140 billion for fiscal 2010, which began in October. Just two years ago — when the unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in contrast to the current 10.2 percent — the cost of unemployment benefits was only $43 billion.

Several temporary benefit extensions dating from mid-2008 are set to expire Dec. 31. In January alone, an estimated 1 million people will lose benefits as their extended coverage runs out. By March, 3 million people will have lost benefits averaging about $315 a week.

Kidnapped boy found dead in central Gaza
[Ma'an] A nine-year-old boy was found dead in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday evening, a medical official said Monday.

Ahmad Farajallah, 9, from the Nuseirat Refugee Camp near Gaza City, was found gagged and bound by his hands and feet inside a black sack, according to Muawiyah Hassanein, the director of ambulance and emergency services in the Gaza Health Ministry.

The boy was apparently kidnapped on Friday by unidentified people, Hassanein stated.

Hassanein added that the young Palestinian's body was taken for forensic examination to establish the cause of death and any indication that may lead police to his killers.

UK climate scientist to temporarily step down
The chief of a prestigious British research center caught in a storm of controversy over claims that he and others suppressed data about climate change has stepped down pending an investigation, the University of East Anglia said Tuesday.

The university said in a statement that Phil Jones, whose e-mails were among the thousands of pieces of correspondence leaked to the Internet late last month, would relinquish his position as director of Climatic Research Unit until the completion of an independent review.

The university's Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research Trevor Davies said the investigation would cover data security, whether the university responded properly to Freedom of Information requests, "and any other relevant issues." The statement said the specific terms of the review will be announced later in the week.
How about whether Jones falsified and destroyed data, pulling off the world's greatest scam until Barack Obama's election to the POTUS? Or is this going to be a "hide the decline" type of investigation?

Cree achieves 186 lumens/watt in lastest LED
from company public affairs release
Cree's tests confirmed that the LED produced 197 lumens of light output and achieved 186 lumens per watt efficacy at a correlated color temperature of 4577K. The tests were conducted under standard LED test conditions at a drive current of 350mA, at room temperature.

While this level of performance is not yet available in Cree's production LEDs,
Cree has had some trouble in making commercial quantities of its leading edge products at reasonable cost
Cree continues to offer volume quantities of the industry's broadest family of 100+ lumen LEDs
as compared to 20 lumen/watt for incandescent, 50 lumen/watt for the compact fluorescent and 80 lumen/watt for commercial long tube fluorescent.

French scientists create skin fast from stem cells
French scientists have found a way to create human skin rapidly from stem cells, a discovery that could save the lives of many burns victims who are vulnerable to infection and now wait weeks for a skin graft.

The scientists made the breakthrough by creating a patch of human skin on a mouse's back using stem cells -- cells which have the ability to develop into any human cell.

Skin grafts have traditionally been created from cell cultures taken from the patient -- a process that takes three weeks, too long for some patients suffering extensive burns.

The new method using stem cells allows hospitals to order human skin as soon as they take in a burns victim.

"What our findings can provide is a way to cover the burns during those three weeks with skin epidermis ... produced in that factory and sent to the physician at the moment they receive a severely burned patient," Marc Peschanski, research director at the institute I-Stem, told Reuters Television.

"They call the factory and then, immediately, they will get a square meter of epidermis which will be a temporary way to cover the burns," he added.

"We grafted cells on the back of a mouse on which we had created a wound, and we observed twelve weeks later that the epidermis had mended itself," said Xavier Nissan, who took part in the study by I-stem, which develops regeneration therapies using stem cells.

In France, 200 to 300 people a year risk dying from severe burns, said Peschanski, who hopes the new method will become a common therapeutic tool.

Large Hadron Collider sets world energy record
[Iran Press TV Latest] The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has reached a major milestone, accelerating beams of particles to the highest level of energy ever achieved.

The LHC pushed the energy of its twin beams of protons to 1.18 trillion electron volts to become the most powerful particle accelerator in the world, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) announced on Monday.

The previous record of 0.98 trillion electron volts was held by Fermi National Accelerator Lab's Tevatron at Fermilab on the outskirts of Chicago.

The LHC, which occupies a 27-kilometer circular tunnel that straddles the French-Swiss border, was restarted earlier this month for the first time since it was shut down in September 2008.

Last week, the machine circulated two proton beams at opposite directions for the first time.

The eventual goal for the LHC is to accelerate protons to some seven trillion electron volts.

The LHC is designed to smash together beams of sub-atomic particles at just under the speed of light. Scientists hope the collider can create conditions that followed the "Big Bang" and help explain the origins of the universe.

Copenhagen conference: Brazil, India, SA, China plan joint exit
BEIJING: In an unprecedented move, India on Saturday joined China and two other developing countries to prepare for a major offensive on rich nations at the Copenhagen conference on climate change next month. The four countries, which include Brazil and South Africa, agreed to a strategy that involves jointly walking out of the conference if the developed nations try to force their own terms on the developing world, Jairam Ramesh, the Indian minister for environment and forests (independent charge), said.

"We will not exit in isolation. We will co-ordinate our exit if any of our non-negotiable terms is violated. Our entry and exit will be collective," Ramesh told reporters in Beijing.
Let's see the Euro/progressive MSM spin this one ...
The move comes after reports suggested that rich nations led by Denmark are trying to set the agenda of the conference by presenting a draft containing a set of specific proposals.

The BASIC countries-Brazil, South Africa, India and China- decided to throw the gauntlet at rich nations by coming up with a counter-draft that will be presented at the conference. They agreed to let China, which initiated the exercise, to present the draft of the developing nations at Copenhagen.
And we all know Bambi can't say no to China ...
"This BASIC draft fully meets India's goals and aspirations. We hope it is made the basis of discussions at the conference," Ramesh said.

Southeast Asia
Hun Sen blasts Thai leaders
[Straits Times] CAMBODIAN Prime Minister Hun Sen criticised Thailand's leaders on Monday, saying they had insulted his country after Phnom Penh refused to extradite fugitive former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

Mr Hun Sen said that his country would 'have no happiness' while Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his foreign Minister Kasit Piromya were still in power.

'I'm not the enemy of the Thai people... But the prime minister and the foreign minister, these two people look down on Cambodia extremely,' Mr Hun Sen said in a speech at a provincial ceremony. 'Cambodia will have no happiness as long as this group is in power in Thailand,' he added.

The two countries have fought clashes near a temple on their disputed border since last year and were embroiled in a row this month when Thaksin visited Cambodia in his new role as an economic adviser to Phnom Penh.

Mr Hun Sen said he would not extradite Thaksin, who was toppled in a coup in 2006 and is living abroad to avoid a jail term for corruption, because his conviction was politically motivated.

The two countries withdrew their respective ambassadors and Thailand halted a series of aid programmes to Cambodia. The Cambodian leader slammed a further Thai threat to close the border between the two countries, saying: 'If you are (an) idiot, if you want the loss, please do it.'

Arroyo to run for Congress
[Straits Times] Philippine President Gloria Arroyo announced on Monday she would seek to remain in politics after her term ends next year by running for a seat in parliament.

'I will file my candidacy for congress in order to serve the hardworking people of my province,' Mrs Arroyo, 62, said on government radio DZRB. 'I hope to be a champion for the poor and to work to uplift the economy.... I will work for this from a position closer to the people.' Mrs Arroyo will seek a lower house seat representing her home province of Pampanga.

Critics allege Mrs Arroyo, who is mandated by the constitution to step down as president next year, wants to enter parliament to retain immunity against potential corruption charges that could otherwise be filed against her.

They say it also may allow Mrs Arroyo and her allies to change the constitution so she could continue ruling the country as prime minister under a Westminster system of government, rather than the current US-style presidential model.

But, in the radio interview, Mrs Arroyo dismissed both accusations.

'Congressional immunity is only from libel suits for utterances made in Congressional sessions. That is not what I am after. This will reflect my own level of commitment to public service,' she said on the graft issue.

Estrada vows no massacres
[Straits Times] FORMER Philippine leader Joseph Estrada vowed on Monday that there would be no repeat of last week's political massacre under his watch, as he registered to run in next year's presidential elections.

He was one of three opposition candidates to file their nominations for the May presidential poll amid a continued outpouring of national grief over the horrifying slaughter of 57 people in the volatile south of the country.

'That will not happen in my administration. I will never tolerate warlordism,' Mr Estrada said of the killings.

A local mayor who was a member of President Gloria Arroyo's coalition, Andal Ampatuan Jr, has been charged with murder over the November 23 killings, and other members of his powerful clan have been named as suspects.

The victims' relatives allege Ampatuan Jr organised the murders to stop a rival politician from running against him for the post of governor of Maguindano province next year.

The other significant presidential contender to register his candidacy on the penultimate day for filing was billionaire property developer Manny Villar, who is running second in popularity polls behind Senator Benigno Aquino. Televangelist Eddie Villanueva was the other opposition candidate to register.

Ampatuan clan denies role
[Straits Times] A POWERFUL Muslim clan accused of staging a massacre last week of 57 civilians, including dozens of journalists, yesterday denied any involvement in the killings in a rare news conference.

Thousands of followers rallied outside while Mr Zaldy Ampatuan, governor of a Muslim autonomous region, said his family has hired a battery of lawyers to defend his younger brother, who is the main suspect in the Nov 23 killings.

He charged that they were being politically persecuted and that the government in Manila was preventing even more of his political allies from reaching him.

'The Ampatuan family is under siege,' his statement read. 'This is an illegal persecution and our persecutors in their dire efforts to promote their sagging image are trying to ride... this incident.'

He did not identify his persecutors.

Mr Ampatuan said he and his father, Mr Andal Ampatuan Sr, who has also been linked to the savage killings condemned worldwide, were innocent.

He appealed to the public to respect the law and not prejudge his younger brother, Andal Ampatuan Jr, a local mayor, adding he will resist a plan by President Gloria Arroyo's Interior Secretary to suspend him and other officials of the vast autonomous region that he heads.

Ozone Hole Repair Contributes To Global Warming, Sea Level Rise
According to a study, anyway. Hee hee hee....
In 1985, scientists from the British Antarctic Survey found a giant hole in the ozone layer of Earth's atmosphere over the South Pole. This discovery prompted a largely successful international effort to ban CFCs, the chemicals largely responsible for man-made thinning of the ozone layer.

Unfortunately, a new analysis from Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) suggests that stopping ozone depletion may actually increase global warming and speed up sea level rise. This discovery pits two important environmental missions against each other, while highlighting the complexity of our effect on the planet.
"Live on pay-per-view! Global warming versus Ozone hole! See it live! SUN-D-D-D-D-D-AAAAAAY!"
SCAR's findings indicate that the extra radiation allowed through the atmosphere by the depleted ozone above Antarctica created wind patterns that cooled the eastern, more densely ice-covered, section of the continent. Those weather patterns partly protected Antarctic ice from the ravages of global warming.

Now, as the hole in the atmosphere heals, those wind patterns will shift, fully subjecting the Antarctic ice to the effects climate change. According to SCAR, that means a rise in sea levels up to 4.6 feet greater than earlier predictions.
"Quick, Joop, extend the dike!"
"Hendrik, I can do nothing until you put some chewing gum in this hole so I can remove my finger."
Although often confused in the mind of the public, and in news reports about the environment, climate change and ozone depletion are largely unrelated phenomena.
No, what the reporter is saying is that they actually are related. And, he is claiming the relationship is dangerous to children and other living things.
Atmospheric ozone, a chemical consisting of three oxygen molecules, protects animal life from cancer-causing UV radiation (hence the worry over its disappearance). Man-made chemicals like certain aerosol sprays and refrigerator coolants chemically react with ozone, creating new compounds that don't block out the radiation. While some of those chemicals are also greenhouse gases, their contribution to global warming is insignificant when compared with other greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor.

The campaign to eliminate ozone depleting chemicals, starting with the 1978 ban enacted by the US, Canada, and Norway, and the subsequent 1989 Montreal Protocol banning ozone-depleting chemicals internationally, were some of the biggest triumphs of the environmental movement in the last century. Today, both acts serve as inspirations and templates for subsequent treaties and legislation that attempt to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

The SCAR report's revelation that fixing one pressing environmental problem may accelerate another dangerous problem puts efforts to prevent rapid environmental change in a bit of a pickle. As the leaders of the world's nations prepare to hash out future environmental agreements, revelations like this can't help make me wonder how today's solutions might become tomorrow's concerns.
Insert obligatory "The sky is falling!! We're all gonna die!!!" here....

Reprinted from The Guardian.
An interesting way for The Guardian and Popular Science magazine to walk back from their AGW frenzy without referencing Climategate. I think they should be encouraged in their new found caution on environmental issues, every time they bring up a similar idea.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Alec Baldwin's Hanging it Up in 2012...Really, He Means It...
U.S. actor Alec Baldwin says he has lost interest in acting and considers his film career a failure.
Sounds like someone needs a hug....
Did he say something that an objective person would find to be incorrect?
"I don't have any interest in acting anymore," Baldwin, 51, told Men's Journal in an interview for its December issue.

Baldwin, best-known for his star turn in "Team America" Emmy-award winning role in the NBC comedy "30 Rock" and the man chosen to co-host the 2010 Oscar ceremony, added: "Movies are a part of my past. It's been 30 years. I'm not young, but I have time to do something else".

Baldwin began a television acting career in the 1980s and has filmed scores of movies, including the 1988 cult classic "Beetlejuice".
He was? I remember Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Geena Davis being in that flick...what role did he have? Not a very memorable performance there, pal.
He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the 2003 film "The Cooler" and stars in the upcoming movie "It's Complicated" with Meryl Streep and his Oscar co-host Steve Martin.

Men's Journal quoted Baldwin as saying it was "pretty much it for him" after "30 Rock", "in a couple of years or so". He told Playboy Magazine this year he was "done" with his career in 2012 and would retire at "30 Rock"'s wrap party.

"I consider my entire movie career a complete failure," he told Men's Journal. "The goal of movie-making is to star in a film where your performance drives the film, and the film is either a soaring critical or commercial success, and I never had that."

Baldwin said the 1990 action film "The Hunt for Red October", in which he starred and which made more than $200 million worldwide, was successful because it was based on a popular Tom Clancy novel.

"And now, the movies I've been in, I never give them a moment's thought. Every movie I've ever been in, I just avoid," he said.
Hmm. Sounds like some of the regulars here on the 'Burg.
Baldwin has expressed interest in politics in the past but did not say in the interview what he intended to do should he quit acting.
Maybe he'll finally move to France?
