Afghanistan
25 Militants Chieu Hoi in W Afghanistan
[Tolo News] A total of 25 forces of Evil have laid down their weapons and surrendered to government on Wednesday in western Ghor province, provincial officials said.

"A total of 25 Taliban fighters including their commander named Mullah Yosuf gave in their weapons and renounced violence," Abdullah Hewad, governor of Ghor, told TOLOnews.

Provincial government said the Islamic fascisti were carrying out attacks against Afghan and foreign forces in southern Helmand and Ghor provinces.

The government will do its best to address their needs and launch reconstruction programmes in their villages to make life worth-living and comfortable to them, a bigwig in the province said.

In the past two or three months nearly 1,000 forces of Evil have laid down their arms and embraced Afghan constitution in different parts of the country.

As counter-insurgency operations have started in restive parts of the country, pressures have been increased on the Taliban.

Recently we have been witnessing that small groups of forces of Evil have given up violence and joined the grinding of the peace processor. It could be an indication that government peace efforts have significantly been working to convince the Taliban to renounce violence.

Two Insurgents Killed in Afghan Operation in Helmand
[Tolo News] At least two bully boyz were killed and three others were maimed in joint Afghan, Nato forces in southern Helmand province on Tuesday, officials said.

The operation named "Omid" was launched in Sangeen, Khanshin, Garemsir, Nad Ali, Musa Qula and Marjah districts of Helmand province to wipe out the hard boys, Local police told TOLOnews.

Four forces of Evil have been jugged and Afghan forces sized some weapons, he added.

Two Afghan soldiers were maimed in the operation, official said.

On last Monday Gen Josef Blotz, a front man for Isaf, said a new military operation named "omid 5" will be conducted in turbulent southern Helmand province.

The operation will be focused in Greshk district to ensure security and clear the district of roadside mines.

After the offensive comes to an end a new military base will be made in Greshk district to keep it under control, Blotz added.

Helmand, Taliban's religious and powerful stronghold in southern Afghanistan, has long been the scene of harsh Islamic myrmidon attacks since the war began in 2001.

2 Killed, 32 Wounded in Kabul Suicide Blast
[Tolo News] At least two were killed including an Afghan intelligence staff and 32 other people were maimed in a suicide kaboom in Kabul on Wednesday morning, officials said.

The incident happened at around 08:00 am in Serahi Alauddin area when a jacket wallah rammed his cycle of violence into a bus carrying government employees.

Describing the Kabul suicide kaboom as inhuman and brutal act, President Karzai strongly condemned the attack in a statement released by his office later on the day.

Officials said the bus was carrying employees of National Directorate of Security.

The maimed were immediately rushed to Isteqlal hospital which is very near to the site of the incident.

Suraya Dalil, Acting Minister of Public Health who was at Isteqlal hospital, told TOLOnews that the 32 maimed people were admitted to the hospital.

"One died of his wounds, and one more patient is in a critical condition," she added.

It is not yet clear how many of the maimed are ordinary civilians.

Mrs Dalil said the number of casualties may rise as three other ambulances were on the way to the hospital.

Taliban has taken responsibly for the incident.

Sudan voter turnout over 60 percent
[Arab News] More than 60 percent of registered voters already have cast ballots in an independence referendum, crossing the threshold needed for the vote to be valid if it creates the new country of Southern Sudan as expected, a southern official said Wednesday.

The south's secession would split Africa's largest country in two and deprive the north of most of its oil fields, though Sudanese President Omar Bashir has said he will let the south go peacefully.

Ann Itto, an official with southern Sudan's ruling Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement, told journalists on Wednesday that nearly 2.3 million voters had cast ballots so far, surpassing the 60 percent of registered votes needed to ensure the outcome's validity.

Some 2 million people died in a two-decade war between north and south Sudan that ended in 2005 with a peace agreement that allowed for the referendum on independence.

The weeklong vote has been jubilant, though the future of the desperately poor region remains uncertain. The entire La Belle France-sized region has only 50 km of paved roads. Because only 15 percent of Southern Sudan's 8.7 million people can read, the ballot choices were a drawing of a single hand marked "separation" or another of clasped hands marked "unity."

Southerners have long resented their underdevelopment, accusing the northern government in Khartoum of taking their oil revenues without investing in the south.

Independence won't be finalized until July, and many issues are yet to be worked out. They include north-south oil rights, water rights to the White Nile, border demarcation and the status of the contested region of Abyei, a north-south border region where the biggest threat of a return to conflict exists.

Northern and southern leaders called two crisis meetings to resolve a surge of violence in border regions that has marred the plebiscite. Violence in Abyei has killed at least 30 people in recent days, officials have said.

Some southern leaders have accused the north of arming the nomads to disrupt the referendum in a bid to keep control of the region's oil -- an accusation dismissed by Khartoum.

An underlying cause of the recent fighting has been the unresolved status of Abyei, claimed by both Arab Misseriya nomads and the Dinka Ngok people, associated with the south.

Misseriya and Dinka leaders met Wednesday in Kadugli, the capital of the surrounding state of South Kordofan. "We will see if they can reach an agreement ... Without hope you can't live," said Deng Arop Kuol, chief administrator of Abyei.

"They will talk about the killings ... the cattle taken between the two sides, migration routes, issues of arms that are breeding conflict," said Kuol, a southerner.

On Sunday, a higher level meeting including Sudan's national and southern interior ministers and regional leaders would discuss the recent deployment of 300 southern coppers in Abyei, seen as a major cause of recent fighting, said Kuol.

A UN source said the Misseriya had suspected the new police were southern soldiers coming in to claim the region.

AQIM chief Droukdel sentenced to death
Recipe for rabbit stew: First, catch a rabbit...
[Maghrebia] A Boumerdès court sentenced al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb chief Abdelmalek Droukdel (aka Abou Moussaab Abdelouadoud) and 15 other Orcs and similar vermin to death, Le Temps d'Algerie reported on Tuesday (January 11th). The verdict against the 16 terrorists, including five emirs, was rendered in absentia. The Orcs and similar vermin were responsible for several attacks in Tizi-Ouzou and corpse-littered Boumerdes, most notably the deadly 2007 assault on a cop shoppe in Yakourene, Liberte reported.

As part of the same court proceedings Monday, the Algerian tribunal imposed a 15-year prison sentence on Ahmed Chouki, 25. After he surrendered to security services in 2009, the Ouled Aissa native identified other suspects who allegedly provided food and information to gangs operating in the region.

Egypt says train shooting not sectarian
[Ma'an] Egyptian authorities on Wednesday played down a sectarian motive for the murder of a Coptic man by a policeman, a day after Egypt recalled its Vatican envoy after the pope urged Cairo to protect its Christian minority.

Prosecutors were questioning the 23-year-old off-duty policeman who boarded a train near the southern town of Samalut and opened fire on passengers, killing a 71-year-old Coptic man and wounding his wife and four other Copts.

The attack sparked a protest outside a hospital in Samalut overnight by hundreds of Copts whom police dispersed using tear gas.

It came less than two weeks after a jacket wallah killed 21 congregants outside an Alexandria church following a New Year's Eve mass.

A security official said the suspect, who was jugged after the shooting, said in questioning that he had felt "irritated and frustrated" because he was short on money. He did not say he specifically targeted Christians.

Ahmed Diaa Ad-Din, governor of Minya, where Samalut is located, denied that the attacker was religiously motivated.

"It has to do with his personal mental state. It had nothing to do with the religion of his victims," he told AFP. "He boarded the train suddenly and emptied his pistol."

He said that the man tried to shoot two Mohammedans who wrestled with him but he had run out of ammunition.

One of the passengers told the official MENA news agency that the man began shooting passengers on the right of the carriage as soon as he boarded and then took aim at passengers on the other side, but his ammunition was spent.

But a local priest said the victims had told him the attacker surveyed the passengers and singled out a group of women who were not wearing the Mohammedan headscarf.

"The victims said he entered the carriage and he started looking at the passengers. He saw four women, sitting next to some male relatives, who were not wearing the hijab," said Father Morcos.

"After he was certain, he raised his gun and yelled "Allahu Akbar," the priest said, referring to an Islamic phrase that means "God is greater."

A security official said police increased its presence in the area and was on alert for further unrest.

Health ministry front man Abdel Rahman Shaheen said the ministry decided to send a plane to transport some of the maimed to hospital in Cairo, a gesture usually reserved for injured foreign tourists.

The decision "has a medical dimension, but it also has political and security dimensions," he told AFP.

The attack took place hours after Egypt announced it had recalled its ambassador to the Vatican over remarks by Pope Benedict XVI it described as "interference."

The pontiff has expressed repeatedly his solidarity with the Copts and called on world leaders to protect them after the Alexandria bombing.

"Egypt will not allow any non-Egyptian faction to interfere in its internal affairs under any pretext," the foreign ministry said in a statement. "The Coptic question is specifically an internal Egyptian affair."

The Vatican's foreign minister said the Holy See wished to avoid escalation of religious tensions in Egypt.

The Vatican "completely shares the [Egyptian] government's concern with 'avoiding an escalation of festivities and religious tensions,' and appreciates its efforts in this direction," a front man quoted Dominique Mamberti as saying during a meeting with the recalled ambassador.

Copts, who make up about 10 percent of the country's 80-million population, have been targets of sectarian attacks and complain of religious discrimination.

Not to mention checking people's wrists to see if they had a tattoo of the Coptic cross before he screamed and started shooting. On the other hand, I am willing to accept the definition of all Muslims who shout "Allahu akhbar" as they kill those of other faiths as criminally insane, so long as they are kept in locked wards for the rest of their lives.

Morocco: 5 soldiers arrested for complicity with a terrorist network
[Ennahar] Morocco has announced Wednesday the arrest of five military personnel suspected of "facilitating" the introduction of weapons recently seized in Morocco with the help of smugglers operating in the south of Western Sahara.

"These (five) soldiers of the Moroccan 59th Infantry Regiment mobilized on the defense wall near Amgala (ed, 200 km east of Laayoune, Western Sahara) facilitated the introduction in Morocco of weapons to a network "dismantled in Morocco in early January, said Wednesday in Rabat on Interior Minister Taib Cherkaoui, during a press briefing.

"These soldiers will soon be brought to military justice", said the minister.

On 5 January, the Moroccan authorities announced the arrest of 27 people suspected of "terrorism".

"These soldiers were acting in return for money," said Mr. Cherkaoui.

A security source has also told AFP that "27 people were jugged in early January in cities across the kingdom including Casablanca, Rabat and Fez (center) and are all of Moroccan nationality."

According to experts, AQIM fighters are based on the borders of Algeria, Mali and Mauritania.

[Pak Daily Times] At least seven people, including three Awami National Party (ANP) and three Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activists and a policeman, were bumped off in various murder incidents in different parts of the metropolis on Wednesday.

All three ANP workers were separately rubbed out in Pehlwan Goth in Gulistan-e-Johar Police Station's precincts.

The ANP accused a Pakhtoon criminal group, headed by Muddasir, of the three killings and nominated them in the case. It also staged a protest demonstration over the killings and blocked traffic in Gulistan-e-Johar and on the Sharah-e-Faisal for hours.

The ANP activists pelted stones on passing vehicles and burnt tyres on roads. The intense gun sex also caused suspension of routine life in the locality. Meanwhile,

Two women killed in Peshawar roadside blasts
[Dawn] Two women were killed and seven other people maimed, including three children, on Wednesday in two roadside kaboom blasts in the suburbs of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar city.

"Two women were killed when two bombs went kaboom! close to a school van travelling along the road," police official Iftikhar Shah told AFP.

Hospital officials said that four other women and three children were also injured in the blasts.

Shah said that a private school van was the target and the two bombs went kaboom! in quick succession.

Television footage showed the mangled wreckage of a white Suzuki van encircled by coppers.

Local police chief Amir Sultan said that the bombs were likely detonated remotely.

"We have found battery cells and other material at the blast site which suggest that the bombs were detonated by a remote control," Sultan said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bomb attack, but Talibs opposed to girls education have destroyed several schools in the region in recent years.

18 die in North Waziristan blast
[Arab News] A jacket wallah rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a mosque in northwest Pakistain on Wednesday, killing 18 paramilitary soldiers and coppers, police said.

The mosque, which was heavily damaged, is beside a cop shoppe on the outskirts of Bannu, a town bordering North Wazoo, a hub of Al-Qaeda and Talibs. Officials said people were trapped in the rubble. "We have received 18 dead bodies and 15 injured," said Mohammad Rahim, a doctor in Bannu's main hospital.

District police chief Mohammad Iftikhar said that most of those hurt were coppers and paramilitary personnel.

The attack was immediately claimed by Pak Taliban, who said it was to avenge US drone strikes in Pakistain's tribal belt, which borders Afghanistan.

"We claim responsibility for this attack. We will continue such attacks unless the drone attacks are stopped," Taliban front man Azam Tariq, speaking from Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location, said in a statement.

The bomb followed a missile strike by an unmanned aircraft on a hard boy compound in the North Wazoo region at dawn on Wednesday, which killed five hard boys, security officials said.

The United States does not officially confirm the controversial drone attacks, which take place with Islamabad's tacit approval and which US officials say has severely weakened Al-Qaeda's leadership.

In 2010 the campaign doubled missile attacks in the tribal area with around 100 drone strikes killing more than 650 people, according to sources. The suicide kaboom came as US Vice President Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden

The United States wants The Mighty Pak Army to do more to combat faceless myrmidons on its border, including by launching a ground offensive in the district of North Wazoo, where it says key Taliban leaders reside.

The army has stalled on a ground operation, saying its troops are overstretched.

Drone Attack Kills 3, Maybe 4 in Pakistan
[Tolo News] A total of three people were killed on Wednesday in a dronezap in Pakistain's tribal belt, local officials said.

In the latest US unmanned plane attack, as Pak officials said, a compound at Haiderkhel village, which lies east of Miranshah, North Wazoo's mean town, was targeted.

"A US drone fired two missiles at a orcs' compound. At least three Orcs and similar vermin were killed and two others were maimed," AFP quoted a Pak security official as saying.

Recently there has been a surge in US drone attacks in Pakistain's lawless tribal areas in particular in North Wazoo, where top leaders of Haqqani and al-Qaeda networks have taken shelter.

It is believed that Haqqani network is responsible for 80 percent of bully boy attacks in Afghanistan. Haqqani-linked attacks each time claim lives of tens of innocent civilians.

Top foreign military officials have come to know that the war against Death Eaters could be winnable only after their fueling and producing sanctuaries and safe havens are targeted.

The US does not officially confirm drone attacks, but it appears that drones are only controlled by foreign troops in Afghanistan.
