Mortar attack kills seven in Somalia
[Iran Press TV] At least seven civilians have been killed and 17 others injured after festivities broke out between Somalia's transitional government troops and al-Shabaab
... Harakat ash-Shabaab al-Mujahidin aka the Mujahideen Youth Movement. It was originally the youth movement of the Islamic Courts, now pretty much all of what's left of it. They are aligned with al-Qaeda but operate more like the Afghan or Pakistani Taliban. The organization's current leader is Ibrahim Haji Jama Mee'aad, also known as Ibrahim al-Afghani. Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, a Kenyan al-Qaeda member, is considered the group's military leader...
fighters in the capital Mogadishu.

Five residents of the Waberi neighborhood in southern Mogadishu were killed on the spot on Wednesday, after the two sides exchanged heavy gunfire and barrages of mortar shells were fired, AFP reported.

Two more pegged out later in hospital, according to medical sources.

"With the first mortar shot, one person was killed and several others were maimed. When people came to help them, another kaboom killed four people," Mohamed Shegey, an eyewitness, said.

Nur Abdulahi, a police front man, said, "After losing a battle, violent elements began firing indiscriminately in a densely populated area."

Somalia has been without a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.

Strategically located in the Horn of Africa, the lawless state has been embroiled in a bitter civil war for years.

Somalia remains one of the countries generating the highest number of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP) in the world.

#2  "Unfortunately its a popular fallacy among Muslims that Black African Muslims are never persecuted or enslaved by Arab or other African Muslims."

Actually later in time, as according to the koran, those that would not convert were killed or sold into slavery to the crown England. In turn - sold to a harbor in Virginia. The moslems made out with the Brits - so in some words , all of this crap hole belongs to them.

Heavy fighting breaks out in Misrata suburb
MISRATA, Libya - Rebels and forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi engaged in fierce fighting on the Western outskirts of the city of Misrata on Friday, a Reuters reporter said.

The reporter said he could see white puffs of smoke and dust from where mortars fired by pro-Gaddafi forces were landing.

The rebels responded by firing back with rockets and heavy machine guns, shouting "Allahu Akbar!", or "God is Greatest!", after each volley.
I wonder which side has the better record of hitting their targets?

Spain Receives Libyan Ceasefire Proposal
[An Nahar] Spain's government said Thursday it had received a message from Libyan Prime Minister al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi seeking a ceasefire.

Spain said it was standing with other European governments, however, in seeking a set of conditions for such an agreement.

"We have received a message from the Libyan government seeking an accord for a possible ceasefire," said a front man for the office of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

"Spain has to say the same on this as the other European governments," he added.

"Of course we are all in favor of there being a ceasefire in Libya but for this there has to be a series of conditions, political circumstances," the front man said.

Further details about the content and format of the message were not available.

The news followed a report in British daily The Independent that the Libyan premier was sending international leaders a message proposing an immediate U.N.-monitored ceasefire in Libya.

According to a letter seen by the Independent, Libyan leader Moammar Qadaffy's regime was ready to enter unconditional talks with rebels, declare an amnesty for both sides and draft a new constitution.

NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the style of the American pants...
Arclight airstrikes intensified in Tripoli this week but U.S. President Barack B.O. Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
both warned Wednesday that victory did not seem likely in the near future.

Both Obama and Cameron on Wednesday stated after talks in London that Qadaffy must leave the country.

In the message seen by the Independent, the Libyan prime minister reportedly departed from previous policy by not declaring that Qadaffy be a part of the country's future.

The prime minister promised to appoint an executive committee to "foresee the ceasefire and propose a mechanism for a political dialogue", according to the leaked letter.

"A process of reconciliation will be initiated which will include amnesty and compensation to all victims of the conflict," he continued. "We are ready to talk to help mediate a ceasefire and to initiate discussions on the future form of constitutional government.

"Let us create a road-map to the future," he urged. "What has occurred in Libya is part of a wider series of events throughout the Arab world. We understand this. We are ready and we know what is required of us."

Libya has been mired in a conflict pitting Qadaffy's forces against opposition rebels since the eruption of massive anti-government protests in mid-February.

An international coalition intervened on March 19, launching air raids and missile strikes under a U.N. mandate aimed at protecting civilians from Qadaffy's forces. NATO took command of the air campaign on March 31.

Ex-Egypt spy chief Suleiman missing
[Iran Press TV] The former Egyptian intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman
... Now former Vice president of Egypt. From 1993 until his appointment to that office in 2011 he was Minister without Portfolio and Director of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate (EGID)...
, who faces numerous lawsuits in the North African country, has gone missing following the ouster of ex-President Hosni Mubarak.
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
More than three months after the ouster of Mubarak in the February revolution, Suleiman has not appeared in public as many reports have been filed against the former spy chief over the killing of protesters, the abuse of power and the wasting of public money.

During the Egyptian revolution, Suleiman had made several televised speeches to calm protesters on behalf of Mubarak to save the regime.

Since the downfall of the former president, many former officials have come under investigation and some were tried and convicted of corruption charges, while Suleiman has so far managed to avoid a day in court.

In his long political career, Omar Suleiman served as an army general, politician and diplomat. In 1993, he became the chief of the Egyptian intelligence services. During the days of the revolution, he was appointed as vice president.

Observers say Suleiman is working behind the scenes with the Western intelligence services to inform them on how they can penetrate the Egyptian government.
Which would place him in a luxurious safe-house on the Saoodi side of the Red Sea, wouldn't it?
Earlier this month, sectarian festivities between Saudi-funded Salafis and Coptic Christians in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, left at least a dozen people dead and hundreds injured.

The elements of Mubarak's regime are accused of being behind the recent deadly festivities and Egyptian officials say that the remnants of the former regime seek to prevent the revolution from achieving its goals.

Government Raids Suhail TV Station and Newspaper
[Yemen Post] The Saleh government succeeded in hitting the opposition TV channel (Suhail) with RPG's late last night ending its feeds. The channel is currently out of service in Sana'a.

Al-Sahwa newspaper, the mouth piece of the opposition Islah party was also attacked by gunnies in Sana'a. No casualties were reported.

The Yemen Journalist Syndicate condemned the attacks on Suhail TV, al-Sahwa newspaper, and Saba News Agency.

Fighting Grips Yemeni Capital as Saleh Orders Ahmar's Arrest
[An Nahar] Security forces in the Yemeni capital battled heavily armed supporters of the country's most powerful tribal leader on Thursday as President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
ordered the primitive's arrest.

The leader, Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar, in turn accused Saleh of dragging Yemen into civil war, speaking after hours of festivities late on Wednesday and overnight in which at least 24 people were killed.

Meanwhile a website linked to the defense ministry said 28 more people died when an kaboom destroyed an ammunition store belonging to the al-Ahmar tribal opposition.

But a dissident military official whose troops are stationed in the area denied the existence of an ammunition store in that district.

Amid the escalating bloodshed, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Frederick T. Frelinghuysen ...
urged all sides in Yemen "immediately to cease the violence."

"We are very troubled by the ongoing festivities," she said in Gay Paree. "We call on all sides immediately to cease the violence."

Washington, which has urged Saleh to quit, ordered what it termed "non-emergency" embassy staff to leave Yemen "while commercial transportation is available."

La Belle France added its voice to the condemnation of the violence and Saleh's refusal to agree to a handover of power.

"We call on the authorities and the other sides in the conflict in the capital to make the fighting cease and protect the population in areas affected by the armed festivities," foreign ministry front man Romain Nadal said.

Saleh has ordered the arrest of the powerful dissident Sheikh Sadiq and his nine brothers, the defense ministry in Sanaa said.

"The president has ordered the arrest of the sons of Ahmar to bring them to justice for armed rebellion," the ministry's 26sep.net news website said.

The state news agency Saba said that in Wednesday festivities in Sanaa six civilians including a woman were killed.

Tribal sources said that 12 soldiers from the elite Republican Guard and six civilians and rustics were killed in other festivities.

The latest fighting brought to at least 68 the number killed since Monday, according to an Agence La Belle France Presse tally based on reports from medics, the government and tribal sources. Scores were also maimed.

The festivities have pitted loyalist security forces against clansmen from several tribes fighting in support of Sheikh Sadiq who rallied to the opposition in March.

The fighting that spread to the Arhab district north of the airport late on Wednesday prompted its closure, with flights diverted to the southern city of Aden, aviation and tribal sources said.

Airport director Naji al-Marqab insisted it was functioning normally on Thursday, Saba reported.

Blasts echoed through Sanaa in what residents described as the fiercest festivities since Monday.

The festivities were centered on al-Hasaba district, where Sheikh Sadiq lives.

"I couldn't sleep until 5:00 am from the sound of shelling," one resident there told AFP.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had escaped from his bonds and overwhelmed this guard using the bludgeon Filomena had smuggled to him in the loaf of bread...
more protesters abandoned University Square, which has been the epicenter of anti-regime protests for months in Sanaa, amid the escalating violence.

"If things remain this way, the youth revolt will not succeed and we will leave the square," one protester told AFP.

But organizers of the protests have called for demonstrations on Friday, calling it "The Friday Peaceful Revolt."

Saleh loyalists, meanwhile, called for a counter-protest under the banner "The Friday of Law and Order."

Saleh and his opponents have for months rallied their supporters in rival demonstrations every Friday.

The president, in power since 1978, has resisted strong diplomatic pressure to sign up to proposals by Yemen's wealthy Gulf neighbors that would see him leave office in return for a promise of immunity from prosecution.

Sheikh Sadiq's rustics have been fighting security forces since Saleh again rejected the Gulf plan at the weekend.

Tribal loyalties run deep in Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country, which has an estimated 60 million firearms in private hands -- roughly three for every citizen.

Yemen has been seen as a key partner in the U.S. "war on terror," but in recent days Washington has stepped up its pressure for Saleh to sign up to the Gulf plan for his departure.

On Wednesday, U.S. President Barack B.O. Obama repeated his call for Saleh to step aside.

Clansmen of the Arhab tribe belonging to the powerful Bakil federation of hardline holy man Abdul Majid al-Zindani, who faces U.S. sanctions as a "terrorism financier," have also been fighting Saleh loyalists.

Al-Ahmer Says Ready to Ceasefire if President Accepts to Do So
[Yemen Post] Sheikh Sadiq Al-Ahmer, whose tribal supporters have been fighting the government forces in Yemen's capital Sana'a, has expressed his readiness to ceasefire if President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
accepts to do so.

Al-Ahmer told Aljazeera TV that he still dwelling in his home, heavily shelled by the forces in the last three days, as he urged the tribes of the most powerful tribal coalition in Yemen, Hashid, to hold, not to separate and not to hesitate to support their brothers.

Dozens have been killed and hundreds injured in the festivities in Al-Hasaba area that triggered fears a civil war has already begun.

The tribal fighters loyal to Al-Ahmer seized several government buildings.

Tribal and military mediations have failed to stop the battles, intensifying and expanding, as President Saleh continues to cling to power and ignore calls urging him to leave and start a peaceful power transfer immediately.

Saleh said on Wednesday that the forces were fighting saboteurs and destructive elements and if there was a civil war, it would be with those subversives seeking to kill the forces and take over public offices.

The Grand Turk
Seven injured in Istanbul explosion
[Al Jazeera] Seven people have been injured after a bomb placed on an electric bicycle went kaboom! at a bus stop in Istanbul, police and local officials say.

The kaboom occurred close to a police training school and a shopping mall in the Etiler district on Thursday, police said. Several ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

Seven people were maimed by the blast, Huseyin Avi Mutlu, Istanbul's governor said. He added that none suffered from serious injuries.

Huseyin Capkin, Istanbul's police chief, confirmed the number of casualties, adding that one of the injured was a police officer who was passing by. He said the blast was caused by kaboom placed on an electric bicycle, creating a "medium-sized bomb".

Two public buses and a private vehicle were damaged by the blast, which also caused some damage to the windows of buildings in the immediate vicinity.

The site of the blast was cordoned off, and white-suited forensic teams combed the area for clues. Several police cars and ambulances were at the scene, and Sherlocks said they had initially feared the possibility of a second blast.

No claim of responsibility
According to a resident of the area, the kaboom took place towards the end of the morning rush hour, at around 9:00am local time (0600 GMT).

"We thought the building had collapsed. I even thought that a plane crashed into the next garden. Everybody was in panic," Ilhan Kurt, a pharmacist at a store nearby, told the Rooters news agency.

"It wasn't like gunfire. It was like an kaboom," Tuncay Ozdemircan, a resident of the area, told Rooters.

"When I looked out of the window I saw yellow and white smoke rising, and I thought that it was a bomb," he said.

Etiler is a mainly residential and shopping distict in Turkey's largest city.

Turkey is due to vote in a parliamentary election on June 12. Security forces have been on alert amid fears of attacks by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a Kurdish separatist group.

Earlier this month, the group grabbed credit for an attack on a police bus as it accompanied a campaign bus for Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP).

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.

"The aim of the attack is to prevent Turkey from discussing democracy, elections, a new constitution," said Suat Kilic, an AKP parliamentarian, following the blast.

"Terrorist organisations carry out these attacks before every election [...] The attack aims to prevent AKP from gaining enough seats to change the constitution," Kilic said.

"They will not get away with it,'' Police chief Capkin said of the culprits. "The people of Istanbul should feel at ease.''

Suicide car bomb kills 25 in Hangu
[Dawn] A suicide car boom struck Pak police on Thursday, killing 25 people in the second attack in as many days in the northwest as the Taliban vow to avenge the US killing of the late Osama bin Laden.
... who is currently taking a long nap in the dirt... urm... water...
"It was a car suicide kaboom targeting a city cop shoppe. The bomber blew up the car at a checkpoint close to the cop shoppe," said police deputy inspector general Masood Khan Afridi.

Regional police front man Fazal Naeem said, "(The bomber) wanted to blow up the city cop shoppe but he blew up the car close to the barrier outside the station." Police officials said 25 people were killed and 38 others maimed.

"Most of those killed in the attack are coppers and the corpse count may rise, because there are offices and residences of senior police officials and the local administration near the attack site," said Naeem.

The Pak Taliban grabbed credit for the suicide car booming, with a front man saying it was carried out to avenge the death of Osama bin Laden.

"We accept responsibility for this attack. This was a small attack to avenge Osama's martyrdom," front man Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP by telephone from Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

"Soon you will see bigger attacks. Revenge for Osama can't be satisfied just with small attacks," he said.

[Dawn] Pak Taliban fired a mortar bomb at a military check post in the North Wazoo region on the Afghan border on Thursday but there were no casualties, intelligence officials said.

The attack happened near Miranmshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region.

"It missed the post and we have no reports of any casualties," an intelligence official in the region said.

The main market in the town closed down and security forces fired shots in the air after the attack, residents said.

Four more killed ahead of Kurram ceasefire
[Dawn] The warring tribes of Shia and Sunni sects agreed to ceasefire in violence-ravaged Baleshkhel area of upper Kurram tribal region on Wednesday.

However,
The essential However...
four more persons were killed and 18 others received injuries in the area before announcement of ceasefire.

To bring an end to festivities in different areas of the agency, the elders of Turi and Bangash tribes during a meeting with the political authorities and FC officials in Parachinar agreed to take urgent steps for a truce and restoration of lasting peace in the volatile tribal region.

The elders of six tribes of Ahle Sunnat had already declared a unilateral ceasefire in Sadda tehsil a day earlier.

Anjum-i-Farooqia president Fazal Qadir Orakzai, Qari Taj Mohammad and Abdul Karim told journalists that they had directed their men to hold fire even if gunnies of rival Turi and Bangash tribes continued targeting them.

The Turi and Bangash tribes made a formal announcement of ceasefire after talks with the government authorities. The leaders of Shia community, Haji Yousaf Turi and MNA Sajid Turi, demanded of the government to take effective measures to end hostility between the warring tribes.

They promised to cooperate with security forces and administration in bringing durable peace to the restive region. "The war is imposed on us as the rival tribes target our men and properties without any provocation," they said.

They added that Kurram Agency
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended...
could no more bear lawlessness and appropriate steps should be taken for exemplary peace in the region.

Political Agent Syed Musadiq Shah and FC officials welcomed the ceasefire by Turi and Bangash tribes and hoped the other side would also abide by the decision.

Later, a jirga led by MNA Sajid Turi left for Baleshkhel area to stop festivities by implementing the truce in letter and spirit. The FC personnel also started moving to Baleshkhel to take control of the area and ask warring tribes to vacate bunkers.

Before the ceasefire, four persons were killed and 10 others injured in Baleshkhel area. Eight members of Turi tribe were also injured in the festivities. The number of casualties reached to 26, including two cut-thoat commanders. The injuries were reported as 80 so far in the festivities started a few days ago.

Two persons were maimed when a mortar shell fired by hard boyz on populated area of Shalozan from hilltops hit a house. The wife of Zenath Bangash and another person sustained injuries in the attack. They were taken to a hospital in Parachinar at death's door.

The educational institutions remained closed, affecting thousands of studnets in the region. The continued closure of Tall-Parachinar Road has also paralysed life in the restive region. The shortage of essential food items and life saving medicines has further aggravated the situation.

Sadrists Rally in Baghdad Against U.S. Presence
[An Nahar] Thousands of followers of Shiite holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
... the Iranian catspaw holy man who was 22 years old in 2003 and was nearing 40 in 2010. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah...
staged a mass rally in Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
on Thursday against U.S. forces, as Iraqi leaders consider asking for an extended American troop presence.

The demonstration comes with just months to go before U.S. forces must withdraw from Iraq, but senior American officials have said they hope Iraqi leaders will ask for troops to stay, while acknowledging the unpopularity of the soldiers.

At the protest in the mostly Shiite north Storied Baghdad neighborhood of Sadr City, named after father of the anti-U.S. holy man, several groups of tightly-disciplined demonstrators wearing identical t-shirts emblazoned with Iraqi flags paraded in unison.

Waves of men clad in black trousers and caps bearing the words "I am Iraqi", marched in military-style formation, while others in the rally set fire to American and Israeli flags.

"We will not accept even one American soldier staying," said Adnan al-Mussawi, one of the demonstrators.

"Occupation has not benefited us at all; it is our religious duty to kick out every American soldier."

The demonstrators numbered several thousand according to an Agence La Belle France Presse estimate, but an official in the Sadrist headquarters in the southern Shiite city of Najaf said 100,000 were attending.

The office said the holy man arrived at the rally in a convoy of vehicles with the intention of delivering a speech, but was unable to get out because a mob of supporters flocked to his car.

An AFP journalist said a convoy of dozens of SUVs and pick-up trucks arrived at the demonstration, but could not confirm the Sadrist account in full.

Several protesters, who varied in age and in social class from the poor to heads of tribes, shouted slogans ranging from "No to the occupation!" to "The people want the occupier to leave!", referring to the widely held view of the U.S. military as an occupying force in Iraq.

Some 45,000 American troops remain in Iraq, primarily tasked with training and equipping their Iraqi counterparts, although they must all withdraw by the end of the year under the terms of a bilateral security pact.

Earlier this month, Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki called for a national dialogue to gauge whether they should stay beyond 2011, and U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Tuesday that he hopes Iraqi leaders will ask U.S. troops to stay beyond the deadline.

Acknowledging that American troops remain unpopular in Iraq, eight years after the U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein, Gates said: "All I can say is that from the standpoint of Iraq's future but also our role in the region, I hope they figure out a way to ask."

Sadr, however, last month threatened to reactivate his feared Mahdi Army militia if the U.S. troop presence were extended.

"We say to the Americans, you should get out," said Awouda al-Fartousi, a tribal leader.

"This is a peaceful protest, but if the Americans don't leave our country, we will pick up our guns. There should be a military and cultural resistance."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria's Protesters Reach Out to Army
[An Nahar] Syria's pro-democracy movement has reached out to the army ahead of Friday protests that have become a weekly ritual, appealing to soldiers to join their cause.

"We urge our supporters to deliver a message to free soldiers in the Syrian army so that hand in hand the guardians of the homeland join our peaceful revolution," said Syrian Revolution, a Facebook group spurring anti-regime protests.

This week's protests are being promoted under the slogan "Friday of the guardians of the homeland", a reference to the army and a play on the words used in the first verse of Syria's national anthem.

A message on Syrian Revolution 2011, another Facebook page, declared "the army, the people, one hand" alongside a picture of Yusuf al-Azmah, a national hero who stood up to the French army during the colonial era.

Anti-regime protesters have used Fridays, the day of weekly Mohammedan prayer, to rally supporters to their cause and have used different slogans each week.

This week's was clearly aimed at the army whose top commanders are fiercely loyal to the regime of Bashir al-Assad and hail for the most part from his Alawite community, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

The army's feared 4th division is controlled by the president's brother Maher.

According to rights groups, more than 1,000 people have been killed and 10,000 tossed in the slammer in the brutal military crackdown launched by the regime against the protesters.

The government insists the unrest sweeping the country is the work of "armed terrorist gangs" backed by Islamists and foreign agitators.

It has prevented foreign journalists from traveling around the country to report on the violence.

Syria jugs Hareth al-Dhari's kid
[Iran Press TV] Syrian authorities have placed in durance vile the son of a senior Sunni holy man and Iraqi tribal leader on charges of involvement in terrorist activities in Iraq and Syria and having ties with the Israeli regime.

Informed sources said on Thursday that Muthanna al-Dhari, son of the Chairman for the Association of Mohammedan Scholars Sheikh Harith Sulayman al-Dhari, has been placed in durance vile for terror activities and links to the Tel Aviv regime.

Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
charged al-Dhari with involvement in provocative campaigns as well as cooperation with Israeli agents in their terrorist attacks.

The suspect, who has set up a base in Jordan, had reportedly met with a representative of exiled former Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam in Jordan and traveled to Syria a day later.

Muthanna, whose father leads Iraqi Sunni Mohammedan tribe of 'Zoba', was also accused of contacts with beturbanned goon Salafi figures before his arrest.

Israeli media outlets have repeatedly reported Muthanna al-Dhari's meetings with Israeli leaders in Tel Aviv while Israeli Channel 2 has broadcast a number of interviews with Khaddam.
