Dumbass, I mean Bigfoot, Struck by Car
A man dressed in a military-style "Ghillie suit" who was attempting to provoke a Bigfoot sighting was struck by two vehicles and killed on U.S. 93 South of Kalispell Sunday night.
That's in Montana.
"He was trying to make people think he was Sasquatch so people would call in a Sasquatch sighting," Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Jim Schneider said. "You can't make it up. I haven't seen or heard of anything like this before. Obviously, his suit made it difficult for people to see him."
That's what they are designed for, Bugwit.
The Flathead County Sheriff's Office identified the man as Randy Lee Tenley, 44, of Kalispell.
Schneider said Tenley's motivations were ascertained during interviews with friends who were not in the immediate area but were nearby when the man was struck at about 10:30 p.m.
He was a prankster, that boy.
"Alcohol may have been a factor," Schneider said. "Impairment is up in the air."
No, Really?
Tenley was on the southbound side of the highway, about a half mile south of the highway's intersection with Rocky Point Road.
"He was in the right-hand lane of travel and the vehicle was unable to avoid him and struck him," Schneider said of the first vehicle driven by a 15-year-old girl from Somers.
15? Hope she had a liscensed driver with her. I bet she's traumatized for life, poor kid.
A second vehicle driven by a 17-year-old Somers girl also struck Tenley as he laid on the highway.
What's that in the road, a head?
Ghillie suits are commonly used by military snipers and some that are advertised on the Internet have a Bigfoot-like appearance.
"This one was a store-bought version, just a commercial Ghillie suit that was pre-made," Schneider said.
Tenley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deader than a doorknob.

San Francisco Bishop Gets DWI Driving Mom Home From Dinner
(08-27) 18:09 PDT SAN DIEGO -- The man set to become the next archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco was arrested Saturday in San Diego on suspicion of drunken driving as he was taking his elderly mother home after having dinner with friends.

Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, 56, was headed along San Diego State University's southern edge when he encountered a sobriety checkpoint, said Officer Mark McCullough. Cordileone was amiable but appeared intoxicated and was arrested at 12:26 a.m., McCullough said.

The bishop was released from jail shortly before noon after posting $2,500 bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the misdemeanor charge on Oct. 9.

Cordileone issued a contrite statement Monday, admitting he "was found to be over the California legal blood alcohol level."

"I apologize for my error in judgment and feel shame for the disgrace I have brought upon the Church and myself," the bishop said. "I will repay my debt to society and I ask forgiveness from my family and my friends and co-workers at the Diocese of Oakland and the Archdiocese of San Francisco."

He said he had been visiting friends with his 88-year-old mother and after a meal together he was driving his mother to her residence near the university.

"I pray that God, in His inscrutable wisdom, will bring some good out of this," Cordileone wrote.

#6  I have trouble believing this. Yes it kills drive, and those with brainpower often grow bored of Cannabis but that the weed actually lowers IQ seems to confirm biases a bit to cleanly.

#8  jrschwartz, I don't reject or accept a study based on whether it confirms or denies biases. you need to look at the structure of the study to determine whether its hypotheses have been adequately confirmed.

The article sez it causes a drop of 8 points. However, the gap in time between tests means a different test had to be used, and one really doesn't know the standard deviation of IQ. Too many uncontrolled variables to claim confirmation, IMHO.
Posted by: Ptah || 08/28/2012 16:32 Comments || Top||

#9  This study was published in PNAS, which is a pretty reputable journal. But to check out your concern, ptah, I bought access to the full article. It's available online for $10.

The research was conducted at Duke Unv., King's College (London) and Univ. of Oswago (New Zealand).

In the present study, we investigated the association between persistent cannabis use—prospectively assessed over 20yrs and neuropsychological functioning in a birth cohort of 1,037 individuals. Study members underwent neuropsychological testing in 1985 and 1986 before the onset of cannabis use and again in 2010–2012, after some had developed a persistent pattern of cannabis use.

First, we tested the “cognitive decline” hypothesis that persistent cannabis users evidence greater decline in test performance from childhood to adulthood than nonusers. By examining within-person change in neuropsychological functioning, any effect of premorbid deficits on later (postcannabis-initiation) test performance was nullified.

Second, we tested the “specificity” hypothesis to address whether impairment is confined to specific neuropsychological domains or whether it is more global. To test this hypothesis, we administered multiple tests for each of five specific domains, as different tests may be differentially sensitive to cannabis-associated neuropsychological impairment. In conducting our analyses, we tested alternative explanations for the association between sistent cannabis use and neuropsychological functioning by ruling out potential confounding effects of (i) acute or residual cannabis intoxication, (ii) tobacco dependence, (iii) hard-drug dependence (e.g., heroin, cocaine, amphetamines), (iv) alcohol dependence, and (v) schizophrenia.

Third, we tested the “education” hypothesis that persistent cannabis users experience neuropsychological decline simply because they have eschewed academics and other opportunities for learning. Recent evidence suggests that staying in school can boost one’s intelligence quotient (IQ) (22), and cannabis users tend to receive less schooling than nonusers (23). Therefore, we tested whether the association between persistent cannabis use and neuropsychological decline remained after controlling for years of education.

Fourth, we queried third-party informants to test the “everyday cognition” hypothesis that cannabis-induced neuropsychological impairment translates into functional problems in daily life.

Fifth, we tested the “developmental vulnerability” hypothesis that individuals
who begin cannabis use as adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the effects of persistent cannabis use on neuropsychological functioning, as evidence suggests that cannabis has especially toxic effects on the developing brain (24–31).

Sixth, we tested the “recovery” hypothesis that former persistent users who quit or reduce their cannabis use may be able to restore their europsychological health.

The article lists the spread of tests that were used, including the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, Rey auditory memory tests and and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV (WAISIV) across all 4 indexes (i.e., working memory index, processing speed index, perceptual reasoning index, and verbal comprehension index), which "share psychometric properties (i.e., reliability) important for such a test".

This appears to be a pretty careful and sound analytic design. It identifies specific neurological impacts, not only "intelligence" as summarized in a single IQ number.

GM suspending Chevrolet Volt output due to slow sales
[USA Today] General Motors is halting, for a month, the manufacture of its well-known but seldom-sold Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric car, according to trade publication Automotive News.

It would be the second interruption in production for the Volt, which can go 38 miles on battery power before needing a recharge from its gasoline engine or via a plug-in.

Automotive News, citing unnamed sources, reports the Detroit-Hamtramck plant from Sept. 17 until Oct. 15. Leaders of the United Auto Workers union told the plant's 1,500 workers about the scheduled downtime last week, the source said.

A GM front man declined comment. "We don't comment on production schedules," the front man told the News. "We continue to match supply and demand."
That, sir, is a comment...

#3  Detroit-Hamtramck plant from Sept. 17 until Oct. 15. Leaders of the United Auto Workers union told the plant's 1,500 workers about the scheduled downtime last week

Sorry, no sympathy from me. Probably won't top the $277.3 billion in taxpayer funded farm subsidies 1995-2011 (not growing corn and beans), but the auto workers will get unemployment and subpay which makes up 95% of their pay.

Posted by: Besoeker || 08/28/2012 9:50 Comments || Top||

#4  Then there is that other problem. Sometimes the Volt just doesn't work. The tree huggers think it is such a wonderful answer for their pet theory of climate change. Ha, the last I knew coal-fired or nuclear power plants were required for charging the batteries of this turkey. I'm afraid this project is another Solyndra money pit. Give this pos to the Hollyweird crowd--they prolly love it. This is a twofer for them; they think they are saving the world and they feel good about themselves for awhile.

#5  Sometimes the Volt just doesn't work.

Like in winter, when cold slows the chemical reaction in the battery, and you crave that 'waste heat' from a gas engine to defrost your windshield and warm your toes?

And so the Volt goes under the bus. Hey, there must be a Buss Under-Voltage Warning joke in there somewhere!

Athletics Official Killed by Javelin in Germany
[An Nahar] A sports official in Germany has died after being struck in the throat by a javelin, police said Monday.
"Whoops! Sorry! My bad!"
The 74-year-old man was adjudicating at a youth athletics event in the western city of Duesseldorf when the incident happened late Sunday, said police front man Andre Hartwig.

He was immediately taken to hospital but died of injuries early Monday, Hartwig said.

The local athletics association for Duesseldorf and Neuss identified the man as Dieter Strack.

"The popular and experienced sports judge was the victim of a tragic accident while carrying out his duties on August 26," the association said on its website. "All of us who were there are horrified and in shock."

Hartwig said that the 15-year-old athlete who threw the javelin was receiving psychological counseling.

Police have opened an investigation into the official's death but initial indications were that it had been an accident, he added.

The competition in the Rath district of Duesseldorf was called off after the incident.

New Orleans hunkers down to meet Isaac
Hundreds of thousands of people on Monday prepared themselves, their families and businesses to receive what by Tuesday will be Hurricane Isaac and the possibility of its 100-mph winds in the safety of their bunkered homes and neighborhoods on Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center said it expects Isaac to grow from a tropical storm to hurricane status Monday night, and the storm is expected to pass the mouth of the Mississippi River on Tuesday night, flinging 10 to 15 inches of rain, with some locations getting 20 inches. The storm is set to cross the New Orleans area Wednesday morning. Eastern edges of the area will see 8 to 12 feet of storm surge.

#3  It looks as if Isaac is going to top out at about 80 mph (per 5pm edt advisory from NHC).

and New Orl and Gulfport sustained winds are likely to remain below 50 mph or so.

Lots of rain, especially as the system moves north and then east.

Togolese Women Declare Sex Strike to Get Protest Backing
[An Nahar] Women from the Let's Save Togo coalition called Sunday on all females in the country to refrain from sex for a week to force Togolese men into backing the group during their demonstrations.

Let's Save Togo is an umbrella organization of nine civil society groups and seven opposition parties and movements that has rallied to demand political reforms ahead of parliamentary elections due in October.

"We call on all women to deprive their husbands of sex for a week from Monday," Isabelle Ameganvi, a member of the group, told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"For us it's a way to get all men, not only those from the collective, to do more in the fight undertaken by Let's Save Togo over the past weeks.

"Women are the first victims of the disastrous situation that we are living in in Togo. That's why we are telling all women: one week without sex. That's also a weapon of the battle," said Ameganvi.

Some of the opposition are seeking a delay in the polls to let reforms take effect first, others also want changes to the electoral code passed by parliament to be repealed on the grounds they were not made properly.

"We will undertake other actions in the coming days," Ameganvi said.

"Next Thursday, we intend to descend on the streets of Lome to demand the release of our activists who were jugged
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
Tuesday and Wednesday and handed over to Lome prison."

Togo has been run by the same family for more than four decades. Gnassingbe Eyadema ruled the country for 38 years with an iron fist until his death in 2005.

Shortly after his death was announced, the military installed his son Faure Gnassingbe as president. He has since won elections in 2005 and 2010.

About 100 people were maimed when demonstrations last week degenerated into festivities between protesters and police, and some 125 people were jugged
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
, the coalition said.

The security minister, Damehane Yark, said in a statement Sunday that 119 people were taken in for identity checks overnight Tuesday and Wednesday before being released Friday.

Eight other people carrying knives were also taken in for questioning during the demonstrations and have been handed over to prosecutors, the minister's statement said.

The coalition has announced new demonstrations after sit-ins from Tuesday.

Concert cancelled: clerics have their way
[Dawn] A planned musical concert in connection with Eid festival in the scenic Muree hills was cancelled on Sunday, after local religious holy men issued decree against the activity. The fatwa forced organisers to do away with their plan.

The two-day Youth and Family Festival was jointly organised by Parks and Horticulture Agency (PHA) and Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab at Cricket Stadium Bhurban, in order to entertain tourists and residents.

According to the official handout issued here, over 5,000 families had thronged the venue on the first day of the festival on Saturday, while a much bigger number of visitors were anxiously waiting for the musical concert on Sunday.

"Some angry religious holy man approached us after we had successfully advertised about the concert. Despite our requests that the musical concert was solely aimed at giving free entertainment to people in connection with Eid, the holy mans demanded complete and immediate ban on the show," Managing Director PHA Capt Mushtaq Ahmed told Dawn on Sunday.

"We had invited several well-known pop and classical singers to participate in the concert but we had to cancel the plan owing to the harsh criticism of local religious holy mans," Mr
Ahmed, the chief organiser of the festival maintained.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
he said that the festival proved to be a healthy activity as it also contained other recreational events including food streets, magic shows, cultural exhibitions, entertainment villages for children and women and many other things.

According to organisers, over 15,000 families were expected to reach the vast lawn of Bhurban Cricket Stadium, the venue, for watching the live concert but the religious holy men used loud speakers to condemn the music show thus forcing the managers to wind up the event.

According to officials involved in arranging the festival, the influence of local religious figures had been growing in the hilly station of Murree arguing that it was discouraging tourism in the scenic place.

DCO Rawalpindi Saqib Zaffar and Commissioner Imdadullah Bosal were supposed to inaugurate the concert but had to cancel their visits after objections were raised on the show.

Blasphemy case: Assessment of girl's age ordered
[Dawn] Islamabad's duty magistrate on Sunday gave orders for assessment of age of the young girl accused of blasphemy.

The girl would be taken to the medical board of Polyclinic on Monday (today), and the district management has finalised a security plan to avoid any unpleasant situation, Dawn has learnt reliably.

According to sources, Justice Inamullah gave written instructions to the administration of Adiala Jail to give the girl to police custody, who will transport her to Polyclinic.

It is pertinent to mention that on August 25, Saturday, the administration of Adiala Jail had refused to accept orders of Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Farasat Ali Khan to hand over the girl to the medical board.

The reason given by the jail administration was that since the case was being tried in the court, only a court of law could pass orders to release the girl for medical evaluation.

The ADC had issued orders for the medical board evaluation after receiving a written application by Chaudhry Tahir, counsel of the girl.

Assistant Commissioner City Muhammad Ali, while talking to Dawn, confirmed that the duty magistrate had issued written orders to Adiala Jail administration.

"There is so much confusion about her age: some say she's 11 years old, other say she's 13 and those who have levelled the allegations against her claim she's 16 years old. So it is necessary to confirm whether she's a 'juvenile' or not," he said.

"She will be shifted to Polyclinic on Monday (today) for the medical board. The district administration has been doing arrangements of strict security to avoid any unwanted situation. After medical board, she will be shifted to Adiala Jail," he said.

Medicolegal Officer (MLO) of Polyclinic, Dr Tanveer, who is member of the medical team, said that written instructions had been received by the district management and all preparations had been done.

"There will be a five-member team, which will comprise of a radiologist, orthopaedic specialist, medical specialist and at least one lady doctor," he said.

"For assessment of age x-rays of different bones and teeth will be done, besides her age will also be examined through physical check-up and her mental condition will also be examined," he said.

The Christian girl was incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
by Ramna police under the blasphemy clause for allegedly burning a page of the 'Noorani Qaeda' on August 16 and then sent to Adiala Jail on judicial remand. FIR vide 303 under section 295-B was registered against her. Her relatives also claim that she suffers from Down's syndrome.

Former general secretary of Islamabad District Bar Association Riasat Ali Azad while talking to Dawn said that the refusal to hand over the girl by jail administration was absolutely right because according to rules, jail administration cannot hand over any person/prisoner to anyone without seeking permission from relevant court.

"It is correct that ADC also has the powers of an Additional District Magistrate but he is holding an administrative seat so he can use that power within the city. The power does not extend to the premises of the jail," he said.

"Since the duty magistrate has given orders for the medical board, the jail administration is bound to hand over the girl to the police," he added.

Meanwhile,
...back at the desert island, Bert was realizing to his horror that he'd had only one bottle for one message, and he'd forgotten to include a return address...
the investigation officer of the case, Sub Inspector Munir Ahmed said that he had recently received the file of the case so the investigation has not been started. He said that the case is under trial in the court of area magistrate Amir Aziz and after completion of 15 days of judicial remand, the girl will be produced in the court.

When Dawn spoke to ADC Farasat Ali Khan, he said that on Saturday he had received the application by counsel of the girl and had passed the orders. Later, he came to know that the jail administration had refused to accept his orders.

"I am in Talagang but I have been informed that on Sunday special magistrate has given orders for the medical board so the issue has been resolved," he said.

#2  Who the flip cares what her EXACT age is??? She's a young girl. Hey Pakistani's ... got you got that??? No more informartion is needed. Maybe you should sign up experimental brain surgery.

#3  She,s not merely a young girl who can't read -- there are plenty of illiterate females in Pakistan, and many of them are not children. But this one is a mentally retarded child with -- reportedly-- a mental age of three. That makes a difference.

Haj corruption case: Hamid Saeed Kazmi granted bail
[Dawn] A court in Rawalpindi on Monday granted bail to former Minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi, who was placed in long-term storage
Please don't kill me!
last year for his alleged involvement in the Haj corruption scam, DawnNews reported.

The court ordered that Kazmi be immediately released after granting him bail against two surety bonds of Rs 100,000 each. Kazmi had submitted his request for bail on Aug 10, 2012.

Two years ago, the former religious affair minister was slapped with allegations of involvement in the Haj corruption scandal, and inflicting huge losses to the national coffers. After which a case was registered leading to Kazmi's arrest on March 15, 2011.

Kazmi was subsequently indicted on charges of corruption in the case on May 30, 2012, to which he pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
The former minister, speaking to media representatives following his release from jail today, reiterated that he was innocent, and expressed the hope that justice would be served.

Apple to Unveil Mini iPad in October
[An Nahar] Apple will unveil a new, smaller version of its wildly popular iPad in October after the release of the latest version of its iPhone next month, the All Things Digital website reported Sunday.
I just got around to buying a keyboard for my iPad. Up until now my grandson's been using it to play games. I use my Kindle constantly, and my Blackberry Playbook when I'm not using the Kindle. Both are easier to carry around.
"First comes the latest iteration of the tech giant's hugely popular smartphone, which will be unveiled at an as yet unannounced event on September 12," the website said.
Probably the next step will be to add phone capability to a 7" tablet.
"Only after the next-generation iPhone is out the door and on sale will Apple announce the smaller iPad it's been working on," it said.
I upgraded my phone before I left for my trip to New Mexico. It's a Samsung that's almost as capable as the tablets. Maybe it actually is as capable -- I still haven't learned all the tricks it does.
"That device, which is expected to have a display of less than eight inches (20 centimeters), will be uncrated at a second special event, which sources say is currently scheduled for October."
Jobs didn't like the 7" size. Now that he's gone Apple can join the 7" herd, but it's kinda late in the game. The Android seems to have taken it so far. RIM bet on the QNX-based Playbook and lost, mainly because it was overpriced. Meanwhile Android's been maturing. It'll be interesting to watch the competition...
The 10-inch iPad has long dominated the tablet market, but faces a growing challenge from smaller models like Amazon's Kindle Fire, the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy.
All Android toys...
Apple is expected to launch the miniature iPad later this year, with analysts saying it could allow the Caliphornia-based company to again best its global rivals despite the death last year of visionary founder Steve Jobs.
Biggest irritant I find with the iPad, after its lack of a keyboard, is its reliance on iTunes for nearly everything.

#6  They were working in a spiked solution. There is no way that this would efficiently work with regular sea water. You would need a huge amount of absorbent material and the processing/transport of that would consume a huge amount of energy and $$$.

And it doesn't say what form the metals come out in. If it is ionic form then they would immediately redissolve in water, which would make it hazardous waste. Not good.
