[BBC.CO.UK] Bodybuilding guru Joe Weider, the man who launched Arnold Schwarzenegger's Hollywood career, has died aged 93.

Known for creating the Mr Olympia bodybuilding contest, Weider built a magazine empire that included publications like Muscle and Fitness, Shape and Men's Fitness.

He died in Los Angeles of heart failure, his publicist said.

The Conan the Barbarian Star paid tribute to the man he called "the godfather of fitness."

Cat eats Dachshund in Colorado Springs
Eh? It was just a wiener dog.
Parks and Wildlife agents set out a trap and caught the mountain lion and euthanized it.
Okay, okay! I get the hint! I'll stop eating dackels!

Virus goes missing at UTMB lab
nothing to see here, go about your bizness
A vial containing a virus has gone missing from a laboratory at the University of Texas Medical Branch, officials said.
"eh, wotta ya mean, missing?"
The missing vial, which contains less than a quarter of a teaspoon a potentially harmful material, had been stored in a locked freezer, designed to handle biological material safely, within the Galveston National Laboratory on UTMB's campus, according to a statement from the medical branch released Saturday. During a routine internal inspection on Wednesday and Thursday, UTMB officials realized one vial of a virus called Guanarito was not accounted for at the facility. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was notified immediately.
"I thought it was Splenda™"
UTMB said that there was no breach in the facility's security and no indication that any wrongdoing is involved, according to the statement.

This marks the first time that any vial containing a select agent has been unaccounted for at UTMB, officials said. The vial does not appear to have been stolen. Officials suspect that the virus was likely destroyed during the normal laboratory decontamination and cleaning process, but the investigation is ongoing.
so, it's missing, but you can say it doesn't appear to have been stolen?
Guanarito is native only to Venezuela and can cause hemorrhagic fever. The virus is not known to be transmitted person-to-person and poses no public health risk, according to officials. In the limited area of Venezuela where the virus is found, it is transmitted only by rodents native to the area and is not believe to be capable of surviving naturally in rodents in the United States.
ahhhh. Well, Hoogo, now we know, eh?

#3  This is the same lab that went underwater during Hurricane Ike, and I'm not making that up. You gotta wonder about putting a biolab on an island in the path of tropical storms, besides that doctors like to live at the beach.
As a side note, immigrants on Houston's east side are coming down with what they call 'Hugo's Revenge', and I AM making that up.

Central African Republic capital falls to rebels, president flees
Rebels in Central African Republic seized control of the riverside capital Bangui after fierce fighting on Sunday, forcing President Francois Bozize to flee and raising fears of instability in the mineral-rich heart of Africa.

At least nine South African soldiers were killed trying to prevent the rebels taking Bangui, a Reuters witness said, dealing a blow to Pretoria's attempt to stabilize the chaotic Central African nation and assert its influence in the region.

The Seleka rebel coalition resumed hostilities this week in the former French colony and quickly swept south towards Bangui with the aim of toppling Bozize, whom it accused of breaking a January peace deal to integrate its fighters into the army.

"We have taken the presidential palace," Eric Massi, a Seleka spokesman, told Reuters by telephone from Paris.

Senior government officials confirmed the rebels had captured the city of more than 600,000 people, which lies on the banks of the Oubangi river bordering Democratic Republic of Congo. Residents reported widespread looting of homes and businesses.

"The looting is bad. Both the population and Seleka are involved," said one senior U.N. official in Bangui. "We are not sure who is in charge. I don't think it is clear yet. It is too early in the game."

The violence is the latest in a series of rebel incursions, clashes and coups that have plagued the landlocked nation - which has rich deposits of gold, diamonds and uranium - since its independence from France in 1960.

#3  Why do I see various colonialists on those "Miss me yet?" bumper stickers.

The current narrative isn't simply that we exploited them while we were there, it's also that we impoverished them for eternity before leaving. In their world view, the bottom line is that Western colonial policies were uniquely destructive in ways that no African conqueror had ever been or could ever be. Why do so many hold these beliefs? Because the alternative explanation involves culprits who stare them in the mirror every single day.

Boris Berezovsky found dead in UK home
[CNN] Boris Berezovsky, one of the richest and most influential of Russia's oligarchs until a bitter falling out with the Kremlin, has been found dead in his suburban London home where he was living in self-exile, his son-in-law said Saturday.

The circumstances surrounding the death of the fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits he is the current Prime Minister of Russia. His sock puppet, Dmitry Medvedev, was installed in the 2008 presidential elections. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law. During his eight years in office Russia's economy bounced back from crisis, seeing GDP increase, poverty decrease and average monthly salaries increase. During his presidency Putin passed into law a series of fundamental reforms, including a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile...
were not immediately known, and authorities in the United Kingdom said it was being investigated.

"His death is currently being treated as unexplained and a full inquiry is under way," Thames Valley Police said in a statement.

The 67-year-old was found by his bodyguard at his home in the affluent community of Ascot, Berkshire, west of London, according an official at Bell Pottinger, a public relations firm that represented Berezovsky.

China-Japan-Koreas
China seeks military ties with Russia
The new Chinese president met with Russia’s military leaders to reinforce the main message of his trip that the two countries must work together more closely if they want to counter rising US influence in Asia.
Don't worry Xi, Champ, Kerry and Hagel can counter our influence all on their own...
Xi Jinping said his visit to the Defense Ministry on Saturday was intended to show that China and Russia will strengthen their military and political relations and improve cooperation between their armed forces. Russia’s state media stressed that Xi was the first foreign leader ever to be allowed inside the Russian armed forces’ Operational Command Center.

He began his trip to Russia — his first outside of China since becoming president last week — by holding talks in the Kremlin on Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Xi pointedly told Putin that he expected Russia and China to “resolutely back each other’s efforts to protect sovereignty, security and developmental interests.”

Xi repeated the message in a speech Saturday to Russian and Chinese students.

“Strong high-level Chinese-Russian ties not only meet our interests, but serve as an important, reliable guarantee of international strategic balance and peace,” Xi said in his speech before a full auditorium at the prestigious Moscow State Institute for International Relations. Chinese students studying at other Moscow universities were among those in the audience.

Xi told the students on Saturday that China rejects an arms race and is not making any threats of war. “The development and growth of China brings to other countries not threats but opportunities,” he said. “The fulfillment of the Chinese dream will be good for China and for the whole world.”

The Chinese president spoke of a need for Beijing and Moscow to stand together to “uphold the principles of the U.N. charter,” seemingly referring to their steadfast opposition to U.N. sanctions against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime.

After the Kremlin talks, Russian and Chinese officials signed agreements on deliveries of Russian oil and gas to China, which has been eager to secure greater supplies from the world’s biggest energy producer. China also has shown renewed interest in buying Russian weapons after its own attempts to build up its arms industry fell short of expectations.

#4  China also has shown renewed interest in buying Russian weapons after its own attempts to build up its arms industry fell short of expectations.

They need contacts in the Russian arms sector who can be bribed to hand over not just the specs, but the methods used to achieve those specs. Far cheaper to steal than to re-invent the wheel. Given that they have purchased hundreds of complete Russian weapon systems some of which they've undoubtedly take apart, the issue comes down to not merely replicating the form factor, but the functionality of the parts.

Police officer beaten to death during clash at Nawabshah varsity
[Dawn] A police officer was beaten to death when he along with his colleagues sought to stop an armed clash between two student groups on the premises of the Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (QUEST), Nawabshah, on Friday.

Station house officer of the Taluka cop shoppe Abdul Raheem Khaskheli along with a police party arrived on the campus after receiving reports that a clash between two groups of students was under way and six students had already been injured.

While the embattled groups were trading fire, the police team tried to disperse them but some students caught hold of the SHO and severely beat him up with clubs.

He was rushed to the People's Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where he died from his injuries.

Reports from the campus suggested that the two groups of students had been at odds with each other for a couple of days over the matter of friendship with a female student. Earlier they had heated arguments, but on Friday attacked each other with clubs, causing injuries to six students from both sides.
