Security forces have started to clear pro-Morso protesters who have been camped out on the streets of the capital, Cairo, since the Egyptian president was deposed by the military last month. On Wednesday, live footage showed smoke engulfing Nahda square and there were reports of tear gas and birdshot being used.
"I see a lot of black smoke and helicopters circling," said Al Jazeera's Dorothy Parvaz, reporting from Cairo.
The action follows weeks of warnings from the interim leadership that force would possibly used to clear the protesters.

[REUTERS] One Moslem Brüderbund member was rubbed out and at least 11 people maimed in Egypt on Tuesday, security sources said, with the Islamist group accusing plain clothes police of firing on their march.
The killing could harden the standoff between the Brotherhood, which is demanding the reinstatement of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, and the army-backed government.
Authorities have held back from clearing two Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo, and a religious authority made some progress in establishing negotiations, but the shootings and other street festivities showed Egypt remained dangerously divided.
Thousands of Mursi supporters marched to the Interior Ministry earlier in the day and were confronted by residents who threw stones and bottles and taunted them as "terrorists". Police fired teargas at the demonstration which had brought Cairo traffic to a standstill.

Egyptian police fired tear gas to break up clashes between supporters of ousted president Mohammed Mursi and residents of a central Cairo neighbourhood, AFP correspondents said.

The clashes began when dozens of religious scholars affiliated with MursiÂ’s Muslim Brotherhood entered the ministry of endowments and were ordered out by police, a security official said. They then clashed with residents of the area prompting police to fire tear gas, the official and AFP correspondents said.
The scholars were joined by more pro-Mursi protesters who damaged shop fronts. That further infuriated the residents, who pelted them with stones, leading to sporadic scuffles on several streets.
The confrontations come as Mursi supporters demonstrated outside several government ministries in Cairo.
Loyalists of the deposed Islamist president have set up two huge protest camps in Cairo and have held near daily demonstrations calling for his reinstatement, after his overthrow by the military on July 3.
“It is a continuation of our revolutionary actions against the coup. It will continue,” Brotherhood official Farid Ismail told AFP of the protests.

[FREEBEACON] A Saudi national known to be a key al Qaeda bomb maker was maimed during a U.S.-led drone strike in Yemen, according to a Yemeni news report.
Ibrahim al Asiri, the bomb maker, was targeted during a missile strike launched from a U.S.-operated armed drone in southern Yemen that killed two other al Qaeda terrorists, the online Yemeni news outlet Al Watan reported Sunday.
A U.S. official had no public comment but urged caution regarding claims that al Asiri was dead.
The drone attack took place in Yemen's southernmost Lahij Governorate that borders the Gulf of Aden. Covert, U.S. military-operated drones carried out the strike. According to the Al Watan report, photos of the drone strike victims showed one man whose facial features matched al Asiri, who was said to have been severely maimed.
Al Asiri is one of the most wanted bully boyz and was behind at least two unsuccessful plots to blow up airliners.
Al Watan quoted eyewitnesses as saying the drone strike Saturday was carried out against a passenger car that heard the drone and sought refuge under a bridge. However, the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits... before the passengers could get out of the car, a missile struck the vehicle and destroyed it.
After seeing that the missile had not hit the passengers, the drone fired three more missiles against four people who had fled from the car.
Al Asiri is believed by U.S. officials to have been the criminal mastermind behind the bomb concealed in the underwear of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who attempted to blow up a Northwest Airlines jet on the way to bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit ... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang... on Dec. 25, 2009.
Abdulmutallab was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 2012.
Al Asiri also is suspected in the plot to blow up cargo planes using printer cartridges filled with plastic explosive in 2010.
Al Asiri, a chemist by training, is also believed to have trained other members of the group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
Saturday's drone strike followed an unprecedented public warning by the U.S. government that bully boyz were planning an attack on the United States.
More than a dozen U.S. diplomatic outposts were temporarily closed amid concerns of a terrorist attack.
No attacks have been carried out and current and former U.S. officials have said the terrorist threat may have been hyped by the B.O. regime for political purposes. A White House spokeswoman dismissed that claim as "insulting."
U.S. officials were quoted in press reports as saying the threat of a coming attack was based on an intercepted communication between al Qaeda leader Aymen al Zawahiri ... London's Telegraph newspaper reported Saturday that Yemeni authorities have offered a reward of up to $23,000 for information on al Asiri and 24 other al Qaeda bully boyz in Yemen.

Mr Mohamed Hussein Said, 25, who according to court documents is listed as a resident of Mombasa and Nairobi, is being held at a South Florida detention center.
He is accused of conspiring with a resident of Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... who is also a US citizen, Gufran Mohammed, 30, to provide, and attempting to provide, material support to three terrorist organizations.
Money and recruits
On Thursday, the US Attorney's Office in Miami announced a 15-count indictment, charging both men with the offences.
If both are convicted, they could each face up to 15 years in prison for each count or a total of 225 years.
According to the indictment, Mr Gufran and Mr Said conspired to provide money and recruits to Al-Qaeda, AQI/al-Nusrah Front in Syria and Al-Shabaab ... the Islamic version of the old Somali warlord... in Somalia.
The prosecutors say Mr Gufran wired funds to the Kenyan to support Al-Shabaab.
Mr Said is also accused of wiring money to another individual believed to be a fund-raiser and recruiter for Al-Qaeda. The two men were enjugged Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'! overseas and brought to Florida by FBI agents.

[Dawn] Twin hand grenade attacks killed at least two people and maimed 28 others belonging to Ismaili Musselmen community, a faction of Shia Islam, in Pakistain's port city of Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... on Tuesday, officials said.
The first attack took place in the Karimabad neighbourhood during rush hour, creating panic in the area.
"A hand grenade fell inside worship place of Ismaili community, killing a woman and a child and wounding 26 others," senior local police official, Aamir Farooqi told AFP.
The community follows billionaire Prince Karim Aga Khan, who lives in La Belle France, and considers him as spiritual leader.
A local intelligence official also confirmed the attack and casualties.
Another hand grenade targeting Ismailis worshipping in the western district of Metroville injured two people, local police official Asif Ejaz Sheikh said.
Nobody has so far grabbed credit for the attacks but Karachi, a city of 18 million people, is rife with murder and kidnappings and has been plagued for years by ethnic, sectarian and political violence.
Meanwhile, ...back at the Esquimeau village Jack was learning how to rub noses with Nootka's wife...... at least two people were maimed in as many hand grenade and home-made kabooms in Karachi's twin city Hyderabad. One of the attacks was reportedly targeted a stall, setup to sell national flags in the wake of Independence Day celebrations for August 14.

[Dawn] Pak security forces claimed to have killed six hard boyz in Balochistan ...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it... 's troubled Bolan district during an operation on Tuesday night.
An official of the Frontier Corps, who did not wish to be named, told Dawn.com that security forces have launched an operation against hard boyz near Dhadar area of Bolan district.
He said six hard boyz were killed and two frontier corps personnel also suffered wounds during the operation. "The hard boyz resisted the operation," he said.
Security forces recovered 40 kilograms explosives and other arms and ammunition from the bad boys' possession. However, a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all... two injured FC personnel were rushed to nearby Sibi Hospital for medical treatment.
The official said the forces and hard boyz exchanged heavy firing during the operation that lasted for more than an hour in the mountainous area.
More troops were called in the area to control the situation. Exchange of fire near Dhadar temporarily suspended traffic between Balochistan and Sindh. However, denial ain't just a river in Egypt... the road was opened after conclusion of the FC operation in the area.

[An Nahar] Attacks in Iraq killed 13 people on Tuesday, including four who died in a blast targeting Shiite worshippers, while gunnies bombed a major oil pipeline, halting exports, officials said.
The attacks are the latest in a surge in violence that security forces have failed to curb, despite carrying out major operations against gunnies said to have resulted in scores of arrests, including 82 on Monday.
In the deadliest attack on Tuesday, a boom-mobilewent kaboom! after midday prayers at Al-Zahraa husseiniyah, a Shiite place of worship south of Storied Baghdad ...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate... , killing four people and wounding 14.
Militants have carried out attacks on both Sunni and Shiite mosques this year, raising fears of a return to all-out sectarian conflict in Iraq, which peaked in 2006-2007 and killed tens of thousands of people.

Militants also bombed a major pipeline carrying oil from northern Iraq to Turkey, near the town of Albu Jahash in Nineveh province.
The attack halted exports via the pipeline, a bigwig from the North Oil Company said, adding that production was still continuing, but the oil was being stored.
Repairing the pipeline, which runs from the northern Iraqi oil hub of Kirkuk to the port of Ceyhan in Turkey, is expected to take between one and three days, the official said.
The attacks came a day after bombs targeting a cafe, a football field and a market in areas north of Storied Baghdad killed 28 people.
The interior ministry on Monday announced the arrest of 82 suspected gunnies in Salaheddin and Diyala provinces, 56 of them at an alleged al-Qaeda training camp.

The IDF launched an airstrike over the northern area of the Gaza Strip on Wednesday morning, targeting concealed rocket launching sites in the enclave, the IDF said in a statement.
The statement said the IAF attacked during the night in response to two rockets that were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Sderot on Tuesday evening, just as Israel began the release of 26 Palestinian prisoners, 15 of them Gaza-bound.

[BBC.CO.UK] Israel has begun the process of freeing a group of 26 Paleostinian prisoners, whose release was agreed as part of the deal to restart peace talks.
The prisoners, most of whom carried out attacks more than 20 years ago, were driven out of a jail in white minibuses with tinted windows.
About half are being taken to Gazoo, and half to the West Bank.
Paleostinian and Israeli negotiators began direct talks two weeks ago for the first time in three years.
Another round of talks is due to begin in Jerusalem on Wednesday.
Israel agreed to release the 26 long-term prisoners as the first of 104 Paleostinian and Israeli Arab inmates to be freed over the next few months.
Failed legal moves
The men were driven away from the Ayalon prison complex late at night in vehicles with darkened windows to avoid any display of triumphalism.
Small groups of Israeli protesters had gathered outside the prison and jeered as the buses drove off.
Relatives and friends of the freed men have gathered on the frontiers with Gazoo and the West Bank, with bands playing bagpipes parading through flag-waving crowds.

An officer with a bomb disposal unit was killed and more than a dozen others injured in two bombing incidents in southern Thailand last night and this morning.
This morning at 9 a.m., a bomb disposal officer died when a bomb exploded as he and security personnel were investigating a location where Sungai Padi district office chief Sayang Chanachaiwong was shot last night at 9 p.m. The blast also wounded eight officers who were on duty and a member of the public who was at the scene.
Sungai Padi District Police chief Police Colonel Wuttipon Yenjit said police did not go to the scene of the incident last night fearing it was a trap to detonate a bomb when security forces were investigating.
In a separate incident in Pattani province, a security volunteer and five others, including a 13-year-old boy, were wounded when a bomb exploded in Kampung Muangtia last night. The blast, which was activated using a cellphone, took place when a crowd was busy putting out burning tires on the road.
Maelan District police chief Police Colonel Phitak Uthaitham said police did not rush to the scene because it was a dangerous area.

In the north, a prominent Aleppo-based activist went missing, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it feared the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) was behind his disappearance.
Near Morek in Hama province, "the number of opposition fighters killed (early Tuesday) has risen to 18," said the Britannia-based Observatory.
They were killed in festivities and army shelling on their positions and ammunition stockpiles, the group added.
Meanwhile, ...back at the bunker, his Excellency called the chief of staff and complained that the artillery was keeping him awake... in the Sahel al-Ghab area of Hama, a 10-year-old child was killed in army shelling, said the Observatory.
The deaths come amid a major rebel escalation in eastern Hama, which is strategically located in the heart of Syria and links several flashpoint areas to each other.
Activists say several rebel groups have joined forces in recent weeks to fight two simultaneous battles in the area -- one called "We are coming, Homs", the other "The single body".
Hama is adjacent to Homs, the center of whose lovely provincial capital remains under rebel control, weeks after the army reclaimed control of the strategic Khaldiyeh district.
In northern Syria, news broke of the disappearance of an anti-Assad activist known for his chants at weekly protests in the city of Aleppo.
"It is likely he is being held by ISIS," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse.
Amateur video distributed by the Observatory showed friends of Abu Maryam protesting at the gates of ISIS' headquarters.
ISIS is believed to be holding hundreds of activists in areas where they operate.
Among the missing is Father Paolo Dall'Oglio, a charismatic Italian Jesuit priest who went to meet with ISIS' commanders earlier this month to try to negotiate the release of activists, and has yet to return.
