Police officer shot, AK-47 stolen by gunmen on a motorbike in Kwale
KWALE, KENYA: A traffic police officer was Monday morning shot and wounded in the head before he was robbed of his AK-47 rifle by gunmen on a motorbike in Kombani, Kwale County. Another female officer was slightly injured after she was wrestled by the gunmen who escaped after the incident along the Lunga Lunga highway.

Police suspect the attackers were followers of Somalia's Al-Shabaab gang. Area police boss Richard Muguai said police have launched investigation and a hunt to recover the loaded firearm and arrest the gang behind the incident.

"The officer has been moved to Coast General Hospital as we hunt down the criminals who we believe as members of the terror gang," said Muguai

He added the gang was targeting the weapon. The attack came a week after police recovered a similar weapon from the Musa Mosque in a raid to break up a controversial meeting. Police said they believe the attack and robbery was staged to replace the recovered weapon.

Traffic police officers in coastal region are being armed over recent incidents of terror related incidents in the coastal region.

The area where the attack happened is very volatile especially with gunmen on motorbikes. This is the third attack on policemen this year.

Car bomb hits Mogadishu hotel
A car bomb has exploded outside a Mogadishu hotel where senior police officers were holding a meeting, according to a police officer.

Captain Mohamed Hussein told the Associated Press news agency that at least four people were wounded in the remotely-triggered blast on Monday. Hussein said that Mogadishu's police chief was among the senior officers meeting inside the hotel.

Another police officer, Mohamed Abdi, said the hotel blast came a few hours after one person was wounded by a bomb concealed in his car and detonated by remote control.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Deputy Governor wounded in Mogadishu kaboom
MOGADISHU -- The Deputy of Governor of Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia Ahmed Omar Mudan has been wounded in a bomb blast inside his car in Mogadishu on Monday, Garowe Online reports.

Witnesses reported that they have seen plumes of black some on the hearty road of Maka Al Mukarama which is frequently used by the vehicles and convoys carrying Somalia Federal Government officials to the heavily fortified presidential compound.

Lower Shabelle region governor Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur (Siidii) told reporters in Mogadishu that Mudane's leg has been severed in a surgical treatment.

"The deputy governor is being treated at Madina hospital, he sustains heavy injuries to his lower body," said Siidii adding that the explosion was caused by a bomb placed beneath his seat.

Photographic images taken from the scene of the blast show a stain of blood on the wreckage of the bomb attack.

C. Africa crowd lynches fleeing Muslim: witnesses
[AFP] A mob lynched a Moslem on Friday after he fell off a crowded lorry driving thousands of frightened civilians out of the strife-torn capital of the Central African Republic.

A large convoy of lorries and taxis packed with Moslems fleeing Christian vigilantes headed north from Bangui under a slew of insults from angry residents, locals said.

The mob set on the victim after he fell off one of the lorries and hacked to pieces his body, which still lay by the side of the road by late morning, an AFP photographer saw.

Armed Christian "anti-balaka" fighters tried to attack a second vehicle in the convoy, but they dispersed when troops from an African peacekeeping force, MISCA, fired warning shots.

Moslem Central Africans and foreigners have been fleeing Bangui for several months to escape killings, looting and harassment by armed militias drawn from the Christian majority in the city, in defiance of calls for peace by religious leaders.

The lynching comes just two days after uniformed Central African troops attacked a Moslem right after a military ceremony in Bangui, stabbing and stoning him to death.

UN envoy to the CAR Boubacar Gaye condemned the climate of impunity that allowed "a man to be attacked in broad daylight and his body desecrated."

Defence Minister Thomas-Theophile Timangoa told the country's transitional parliament Thursday that a probe had begun into the lynching and that human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
experts had been asked to help.

'Left to fend for themselves'

Thousands of Moslems have been fleeing Bangui in fear for their lives as they face vengeance attacks from Christian militia in a spiralling cycle of religious violence.

The violence was sparked after the Seleka rebel group installed Michel Djotodia as the country's first Moslem president in a coup in March 2013.

The following months saw rogue Seleka fighters unleash a wave of atrocities against Christians, prompting the emergence of "anti-balaka" (anti-machete) militia who began launching Dire Revenge™ attacks.

In Geneva, UN refugee agency spokeswoman Fatoumata Lejeune-Kaba said Friday that 8,762 people, have crossed into eastern Cameroon in the past 10 days alone, mainly Moslems "who say they feared for their safety".

While many Moslems try to flee Bangui, others seek safety near the capital, abandoning towns and villages in the provinces where they come under attack.

Up to 4,000 Moslems have taken refuge at the Bangui airport, near the bases of French and African troops, and hope to leave the country in the next few weeks.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who is due in Bangui on February 12, said in an interview Thursday that an extension of the current UN mandate for La Belle France's 1,600-strong contingent was "likely".

New interim president Catherine Samba Panza -- who took over in January after Djotodia was forced to resign -- has asked the UN for a full-fledged peacekeeping operation.

She said the French and some 5,000 African "forces do not have enough men to reestablish and assure the security of the people".

Samba Panza's government faces a massive task in restoring peace, with the territory outside the capital largely lawless and in the hands of warlords.

Atrocities, the fear of attack and a lack of food have displaced almost a quarter of the country's population of about 4.6 million, while the UN and relief agencies estimate that at least two million people need humanitarian assistance.

"Civilians remain in constant fear for their lives, and have been largely left to fend for themselves," the emergency coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Martine Flokstra, said Friday.

"In the northwest and in Bangui, we are currently witnessing a direct retaliation against the Moslem minority," she added in a statement.

"We are concerned about the fate of these communities trapped in their villages, surrounded by anti-balaka groups and also about the fact that many Moslem families are being forced into exile to survive."
And then there's this from the Washington Post. A taste:
Lynching of Christian man by Muslims is sign of chaos in Central African Republic

BANGUI, Central African Republic — Polin Pumandele was killed about 9:30 a.m.

He was a Christian walking in a Mohammedan enclave, carrying wood to sell. In these tense days, that is enough reason to die in the Central African Republic. A Mohammedan mob confronted Pumandele, 23, on a side street and pushed him around. Then, they threw him into a ditch. At least one man stabbed him before his throat was slit.

As the slaughter unfolded, some of his killers ordered a Washington Post journalist witnessing the attack Sunday to leave. “Allez, allez — go, go, ” one yelled, wagging his arms menacingly.

Stationed nearby was a group of Burundian peacekeepers, ordered by the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
to protect civilians. But they didn’t know about the killing until some men — perhaps his killers — brought Pumandele’s mutilated body past them in a wheelbarrow. They dumped his body outside the Red Thingy office across from the Burundian base. And just as swiftly, Pumandele was taken to the morgue, adding to the rolls of the dead in Africa’s latest war.

At least nine other people were killed Sunday in and around the area where Pumandele died, according to human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
activists and aid agencies. Christians killed Mohammedans. Mohammedans killed Christians. Shops were burned down. Houses were looted. Bodies were burned in streets, in front of African peacekeepers. Some tried to stop the looters; others looked the other way. In all, Sunday’s events were the latest sign of the mayhem in this besieged capital, reeling from one of the worst episodes of sectarian violence on the continent in recent memory.

Arabia
Yemen to Become Six-Region Federation
[An Nahar] A presidential panel has agreed to transform Yemen into a six-region federation as part of its political transition, state news agency Saba announced Monday.

"The final approval" on creating a "federal state of six regions" came at a meeting of the committee, headed by President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi and including representatives of Yemen's main parties, Saba said.
They can now fight over who owns what region and where all the map lines are...
You know how it is -- the lads get a bit energetic if they don't blow off steam regularly.
Hadi formed the committee in late January at the end of a "national dialogue" to decide on the number of regions, and to insert it into the text of a new constitution, to be drafted and voted on within a year.

Yemen's parties had been divided on whether to split the future federation into two or six regions.

Sanaa feared that a straight north-south divide could set the stage for the disgruntled south to secede.

Southern parts of Yemen formed an independent state from the end of British colonial rule in 1967 until union with the north in 1990.

A secession attempt four years later sparked a brief but bloody civil war that ended with northern forces taking over the south.

The six agreed regions include four in the north, comprising Azal, Saba, Janad and Tahama, and two in the south, Aden and Hadramawt.

Azal would include the capital Sanaa, in addition to the provinces of Dhamar, Amran and Saada, a stronghold of Iranian catspaws, while Aden would comprise the capital of the former south, as well as Abyan
...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...
, Lahej and Daleh, the news agency reported.

The southeastern Hadramawt province would include Al-Mahra, Shebwa and the island of Socotra, while Saba comprises Bayda, Marib, Al-Jawf and Dhamar.

Janad would include Taez and Ibb, and Tahama also takes in Hudaydah, Rima, Mahwit and Hajja.

The decentralization of power aims to meet the southerners' demands for autonomy.

Truce in Amran takes into effect
[Yemen Post] Saba news agency confirmed on Sunday that mediators managed, after much tossing and turning to negotiate a ceasefire in between al-Ahamr rustics and Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is "God is Great, Death to America", Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews" ...
gunnies in the northern province of Amran, located directly north of the Yemeni capital, Sana'a.
"Hudnaaaaaaa! Last one to rearm is a rotten egg!"
The truce provisioned for the Houthis (Shiite group originally based in Sa'ada) to withdraw from Arhab, an area which lies north of Sana'a International Airport, and refrain from further engaging al-Ahmar rustics.

Ever since the end of October 2013, the Houthis, under the leadership of Abdel-Malek al-Houthi have launched an open war on Salafi gunnies and their affiliates on account they perceived the group as a direct threat to not only Yemen Shia Zaidi community but to an extent the nation as they alleged Salafi harbour links to dangerous radical terror groups in the region.

Although Salafi always denied any wrong doing, strictly rejected the notion they were training gunnies for combat in the security and privacy of their Dar al Hadith religious centre in Dammaj (Sa'ada province), the Houthis nevertheless moved against their myrmidons, intent on driving them out of northern Yemen.

Now well into Hashid territory and into al-Ahmar's fief (Yemen's most prominent tribal clan), the Houthis's recent advances have led them into the Amran province. For several weeks both the Houthis and al-Ahmar rustics have been engaged in a bitter battle for control which threatens to derail Yemen's power transition.

For the enth time since October, President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi has managed to broker the terms of truce, hoping that this time it will stick. While President Hadi has so far refrained from deploying the armed forces, keen on diffusing the situation rather than escalating it, officials confirmed that troops would be deployed in certain areas as to guarantee that both factions will honour the terms of this truce and give mediator a chance to hash out a more permanent agreement.

Bangladesh
Mufti Izhar, son charge-sheeted
[Bangla Daily Star] Chittagong police yesterday pressed charges against Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 it demonstrated violently against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
nayeb-e-ameer Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, his son and seven others in a case filed in connection with an kaboom at a madrasa.

The blast occurred in a room of a dormitory of Al Jamaatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa in port city's Lalkhan Bazar on October 7, 2013. Three people died in the kaboom.

Md Lokman, a sub-inspector of Khulshi Police Station, submitted the charge sheet before the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Mashiur Rahman Chowdhury around 1:30pm.

The other accused of the case are Abdul Hai, Rabibur Rahman, Md Ishak, Monir Hossain, Abdul Mannan, Tafsir Ahmed and Mohammad Junayed.

Mufti Izharul and his son Harun Bin Izhar were made the prime accused in the case, said Rezaul Masud, additional deputy commissioner (prosecution) of Chittagong police.

Izharul, also principal of the madrasa, went into hiding after the blast, he added.

According to the charge sheet, explosives were made and kept at the madrasa for conducting subversive activities and creating panic among people.

After the kaboom, police recovered four handmade grenades and huge bomb-making materials like iron caps, cylinders, electric cables and 18 bottles of picric acid from madrasa premises.

Izharul, however, claimed that the kaboom originated from a laptop charger while his son Harun claimed that it was from an instant power supply (IPS).

Two cases -- one under explosive substances act and the other for storing acid -- were filed with Khulshi Police Station on October 8, 2013, said SI Lokman.

Later a murder case was filed in connection with the blast, Lokman, also the investigation officer (IO) of the kaboom case, added.

Police nabbed
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
Harun and his bodyguard Md Junayed from the house of Harun's in-law at Hathazari upazila of Chittagong on October 9.

The IO said 12 people were accused in the explosive case. The charge sheet was submitted against nine people as three other accused -- Nur-un-Nabi, Md Salman and Jobair Ahmed -- gave up the ghost at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

British Man Jailed for Threat to Kill Prince Harry

for three years on Monday for plotting to kill Prince Harry.
See if you can guess his name, and no, it's not William, George, Trevor or Nigel...
Ashraf Islam, 31, said he had a "moral right to judge" the royal because he fundamentally disagreed with the work of the British military
Ashraf Islam, 31, said he had a "moral right to judge" the royal because he fundamentally disagreed with the work of the British military, of which Prince Harry is a member.

The judge at Isleworth Crown Court in London described Islam's plot as "vague and unlikely to succeed", but said he presented a risk to the public.

Islam, a Mohammedan convert, pleaded guilty in May to making a threat to kill the prince, the younger son of heir to the throne Prince Charles and younger brother of Prince William.

He had earlier handed himself in to police and volunteered the information about the plot, defense counsel Roxanne Morrell said.

Judge Richard McGregor-Johnson said he would not go over details of Islam's plot, but told the court during the brief hearing: "This was not a threat made in isolation.

"The examination of your computer revealed you conducted research on his (Prince Harry's) whereabouts and intentions.

"You had given the matter considerable thought."

He added: "The reason behind that is that you thought he and other serving officers had some moral guilt, and you thought you had a moral right to judge.

"I accept that there is nothing here that could be described as professional plans as to your expressed intentions.

"Your plan was vague and unlikely to succeed."

But the judge said police would have intervened had Islam, who has previous convictions for dishonesty and for involvement in an attempted robbery, attempted to carry out his plan.

Harry has served two tours of duty in Afghanistan but last month he gave up flying army helicopters to take up a desk job in the military.

Eight of a family, 6 attackers killed in Dera Bugti
[DAWN] QUETTA: Eight members of a family, six of them women and kiddies, were bumped off in an attack on the house of a peace force commander in tehsil Sui of Dera Bugti district on Sunday. Six of the attackers were killed in subsequent festivities with volunteers of the peace force and security forces.

According to officials, gunnies attacked the house of Ghazi Khan Marhata Bugti in Dodatba village in the early morning and started firing with automatic weapons, killing the eight people on the spot.

"Ghazi Khan Marhata, commander of the Bugti peace force, his brother Imam Bakhsh, three women and three children were rubbed out. They killed the entire family," Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
Home Secretary Asad Gilani told Dawn.

Two attackers were killed in an exchange of fire with the volunteers. He said four other attackers were later killed in a gunbattle with Frontier Corps personnel in Maswani village.

Police said the area where the incident had taken place was close to Subatpur district on the Sindh-Balochistan border. "The gunnies entered the house and opened fire with automatic weapons. The victims were sleeping at the time," police said.

A front man for the Frontier Corps accused the banned Baloch Republican Army (BRA) of having carried out the attack. He said that soon after the attack, FC's quick response force cordoned off the area, but its personnel also came under the attack.

The FC troops returned fire and six men of the BRA were killed in the furious gunbattle which continued for several hours, the front man said, adding that a large quantity of arms and ammunition were seized from the area.

He said the BRA men had carried out the attack because Ghazi Khan Marhata was cooperating with security forces.

"The people of the area identified three BRA men killed in the clash. They were involved in killing, kidnapping for ransom, attacking security forces and bombing gas pipelines," he alleged.

But the BRA rejected the FC's claim. Calling from an unidentified place, its front man Sarbaz Baloch denied that his organization had carried out the attack on the house and killed Ghazi Khan Marhata and members of his family.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
he confirmed the killing of two BRA men in a clash with security forces in Pather Nallah area of Dera Bugti and said seven security personnel were also killed in the attack. He identified the two BRA men as Madad Bugti and Shero Bugti.

Pakistan Anti-Drone Campaigner Kidnapped
[An Nahar] A Pak anti-drone campaigner has "disappeared" from the city of Rawalpindi days before he was due to testify before European parliaments, his lawyer said Monday, accusing the country's intelligence agencies of illegal kidnapping.

Kareem Khan, whose brother and teenage son were killed in a drone attack in December 2009, was picked up at his home by security forces in the early hours of February 5 and has not been heard from since, Shahzad Akbar, a lawyer representing him said.

Akbar said 15 to 20 men, some wearing police uniform and others in plain clothes, seized Khan, who was the first Pak to sue his government over the drone attacks that resulted in the deaths of his relatives.

"We lodged a report with the local police but they denied having picked him up. I checked with the central office of the police and they have no such arrest in their record, it seems to be work of the intelligence agencies," Akbar said.
"Wudn't me."
"The men did not disclose their identities and no reason was given for the detention. Mr. Khan's wife and young children were present at the time, as was a neighbor," he added.

A senior police official who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity surrounding the case denied the force had jugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
Khan, who is in his fifties and hails from the North Wazoo tribal area.

"The Rawalpindi police has not arrested anybody from the tribal area, in fact we had no 'raid' on record on that night," the official said.

Khan had filed a case against the Pak government petitioning the court against drones strikes, arguing they constitute murder under domestic law. The next hearing date before the Islamabad High Court is scheduled for Tuesday.

He was also due to travel to Europe this Saturday to speak with German, Dutch and British parliamentarians about his personal experience with drone strikes and the impact they are having on his country.

According to an Agence La Belle France Presse tally, 2,155 people have been killed in drone attacks since August 2008, with critics charging that the strikes cause many civilian casualties.

The U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution in December 2013 calling on states using drone strikes as a counter-terrorism measure to comply with their obligations under international law and the U.N. Charter.

Clare Algar, executive director of the legal charity Reprieve, said: "We are very worried about Mr Khan's safety."
I would be, too, if I gave more than a brief vent of methane about Mr. Khan.

Pakistan Taliban Preps 500 Female Suicide Bombers
The Pakistani Taliban has as many as 500 female suicide bombers ready to act, a representative of the group involved in peace negotiations said, underscoring the risk of further violence if talks fail.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan -- known as the Pakistani Taliban, or TTP -- sees no urgency to reach an agreement with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government, Maulana Abdul Aziz, one of three negotiators representing the TTP, said in a Feb. 7 interview at his Islamabad seminary. The two sides started talks last week.

"You should know that at the moment they have at least 400 to 500 female suicide bombers in Waziristan and other tribal areas," said Aziz, former head cleric of Islamabad's Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, referring to the TTP. "The government should realize the situation and their demands."

"They are fighting for the implementation of Sharia," Aziz said at the seminary, where some 1,300 female students are studying. "It's the law of nature that when people don't get their rights, they pick up arms."

The number of female suicide bombers mentioned by Aziz "is a very exaggerated figure," said Muhammad Amir Rana, director of the Islamabad-based Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies. "The Taliban are way ahead in the propaganda war, and they have given a tough time to the state," he said. "Female suicide bombers have been used, but not too many."

Iraq
Iraq Speaker Targeted in Blast as 21 Militants Killed
[An Nahar] Iraq's parliament speaker narrowly escaped an attack in his hometown on Monday while 21 Death Eaters died when a boom-mobile they were readying mistakenly went off in renewed nationwide violence.

The unrest comes amid the worst protracted period of bloodshed in nearly six years, with more than 1,000 people killed last month as security forces grapple with near-daily attacks and battles with anti-government fighters in Anbar province.

Foreign leaders have pressed the Shiite-led government to reach out to the disaffected Sunni minority to undermine support for Death Eaters, but Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has taken a hard line ahead of April elections.

On Monday, a convoy carrying Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, Iraq's most senior Sunni Arab politician, was hit by a roadside kaboom in the main northern city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, his office said.

One of Nujaifi's bodyguards was maimed, a police captain and a medical source said, but the speaker himself escaped unharmed.

Mosul and surrounding Nineveh province, where Nujaifi's brother Atheel is governor, is one of Iraq's most violent areas, with attacks regularly targeting security forces, government officials as well as civilians.

Also north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, a boom-mobile mistakenly went off in a Death Eater compound, killing 21 gunnies including a jacket wallah, an anti-Qaeda militia leader and a police officer said.

The group were filming a propaganda video of the would-be suicide kaboomer when a technical glitch set off the boom-mobile in the Jilam area south of Samarra, according to Majeed Ali, the head of the Sahwa militia force in the city, and a police officer.

Jilam, a mostly rural farming area just south of the mostly-Sunni city of Samarra, has long been an bad boy stronghold.

The 8:00 am (0500 GMT) blast went off within a compound in the area, Ali and the police officer said.

Elsewhere on Monday, attacks near Storied Baghdad in and around the towns of Mussayib and Balad left two people dead, while three Death Eaters were also killed in festivities with security forces.

More than 1,000 people were killed nationwide last month, according to government data, the highest such figure since 2008, with violence surging markedly higher in recent months.

No group has grabbed credit for most of the bloodshed, but Sunni Death Eaters including the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
, a powerful jihadist group, are often blamed.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Rebels Kill 21 Civilians in Syria Alawite Village
[An Nahar] Opposition fighters from Islamist brigades have killed at least 21 civilians and 20 pro-regime fighters in an Alawite village in Syria's Hama province, an NGO said on Monday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based monitoring group, said fighters from Islamist brigades including Jund al-Aqsa were behind the deaths in Maan village, in central Syria, on Sunday.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said there were no immediate details on how the civilians had been killed, but added that at least 10 of them appeared to be from a single family.

The group said at least 20 members of the National Defense Forces, a pro-regime militia, had been killed in the attack.

A video posted on the YouTube website, purportedly produced by Jund al-Aqsa, showed its forces moving into the village and opening fire.

The video, titled "the liberation of Maan village," shows a fighter raising a black flag often associated with radical Islamist groups atop a communications tower.

A man wearing camouflage trousers and a shirt is shown lying on the ground, his upper chest soaked in blood, and fighters can be seen loading captured ammunition onto a truck.

There is no footage of the reported civilian deaths.

Syrian Warplanes Launch Two Strikes on Arsal's Outskirts
[An Nahar] Syria's air force launched two strikes on the outskirts of the Bekaa town of Arsal on Monday, causing no casualties, a Lebanese security source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Leb's National News Agency said "Syrian warplanes launched two strikes on the town of Younine in the Eastern Mountain Range on the Lebanese-Syrian border."

It said the raids did not cause any casualties.

Al-Jadeed television said the two strikes targeted "the Khirbet Younine area in Arsal's outskirts as the warplanes pursued gunnies."

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called the chief of staff and complained that the artillery was keeping him awake...
Voice of Leb radio (100.5) said "a Syrian warplane launched an air-to-ground missile against the Wadi Hmayyed area in Arsal's outskirts."

The raid was the latest in a string of cross-border strikes against Arsal. On January 17, shells rained down on the town, killing eight people, including five children.

A December air raid prompted the Lebanese Army to fire back with anti-aircraft guns.

Arsal's residents support the revolt against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

, and the town has become home to thousands of Syrians who have fled the fighting. It has also turned into a route for the trafficking of arms and fighters from and to Syria.

IRNA: Hizbullah Dismantled Terrorist Cell Ran by Saudi Intelligence
[An Nahar] Hizbullah has dismantled a dormant cell of The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
ran by Saudi spies in its stronghold in Beirut's southern suburbs, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported.

IRNA quoted security sources as saying on Sunday that the network is led by the Saudi intelligence under the cover of businesses carried out by Syrian and Lebanese traders.

Hizbullah has remained silent but informed sources told the agency that the party grew suspicious and put under its surveillance two croissant selling shops in the districts of Haret Hreik and Bir al-Abed.

They said the Saudi intelligence had bought a franchise to manage the shops and allow ISIL gunnies from infiltrating Beirut's southern suburbs.

Hizbullah "did not arrest the terrorists" but handed the Lebanese army the documents proving their operations, the sources told IRNA.

The army, in its turn, followed the issue up with the judicial authorities and tossed in the slammer
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
the suspects, they added.

A series of bombings have targeted Hizbullah strongholds in Leb as the party's participation in the Syrian war exacerbates sectarian tensions at home.

Sunni bad boy groups have grabbed credit for the relentless series of attacks on the Shiite parts of Leb. They say it is in retaliation for Hizbullah sending its fighters into Syria's civil war to support forces of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
against the mainly Sunni rebels seeking to topple him.

Roads Blocked in Tripoli in Protest at Remarks Deemed Insulting to Caliph Omar
[An Nahar] Several roads were blocked Monday in the northern city of Tripoli in protest at remarks voiced by a cleric from the Msheik family that were deemed insulting to Islam's second Caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab.

"The Hariri Project-Qobbeh road has been blocked with burning tires in protest at remarks against (detained cleric) Omar al-Atrash that were voiced Sunday during a news bulletin," state-run National News Agency reported.

But LBCI television said the roads were blocked over "the insulting of the Caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab."

"The army reopened the Abi Samra road after it was blocked by young men protesting remarks voiced by a cleric from the Msheik family," al-Jadeed TV reported later.

However, protests renewed in the evening as demonstrators gathered at the Abu Ali River bridge to denounce Msheik's remarks.

"A grenade exploded near the stream of the Abu Ali River in Tripoli," al-Jadeed added.

On Sunday, members of the Msheik family, which hails from the Bekaa, demonstrated and blocked the Hadath road south of Beirut to protest rumors about a possible release of Sheikh Omar al-Atrash, who has been detained by the army on charges of transporting bomb-laden cars to Beirut and dealing with extremist groups.

During the protest, a young Shiite cleric from the Msheik family described al-Atrash as a murderer, in remarks to LBCI.

"Omar al-Atrash is a murderer takfiri and anyone demanding his release is also a criminal ... I want to say something and I hope no one will misunderstand me: Omar al-Atrash has been convicted of murder, bombings and spilling the blood of the Lebanese -- not only the Shiites. We won't rest before you are killed and executed, Omar. May God curse you Omar!" cleric Msheik said in remarks aired by LBCI during its evening news bulletin.

Omar ibn al-Khattab was one of the most powerful and influential Muslim caliphs (rulers) in Islamic history. He was a revered ṣaḥabi or companion of the Prophet Mohammed. Omar succeeded the first Caliph Abu Bakr (632--634) in 634 AD.

State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr has charged Sheikh Omar al-Atrash and five others in connection with two suicide bombings in the Beirut southern suburb of Haret Hreik last month that killed at least six people.

Lebanon has been rocked by a string of bomb attacks in recent months, with three in January alone.

Many have targeted strongholds of Hizbullah, which has drawn the ire of Sunni extremist groups in part because of its role fighting alongside the regime in Syria.

Atrash, who was detained on January 22, admitted ties to three wanted individuals, as well as to the al-Qaida-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and al-Nusra Front, the Lebanese Army said at the time.

Atrash "confessed to transporting car bombs to Beirut" after receiving them from a Syrian person, as well as "transporting suicide bombers of different Arab nationalities into Syria and handing them over to the al-Nusra Front," the army said. He also admitted transporting two suicide bombers who were killed in the southern city of Sidon in a gunfight with the army in December.

Is this the new GITMO ?
[Ynet] Of the 166 prisoners still at the infamous US prison in Cuba, 87 are Yemeni. Plans to house them in a new jail in Socotra have not been met with great enthusiasm.

Amid renewed American promises to close down the notorious Guantanamo prison in Cuba, there is speculation that Socotra, an isolated island in the Indian Ocean, could host a new prison facility for Yemenis after they are released from the controversial US-run prison.

Located between Yemen and Somalia, Socotra is one of the most isolated corners of the planet. Home to some 800 varieties of flora and fauna, about a third of which do not exist anywhere else on earth, residents here fear that a prison could have negative ecological implications for this unspoiled area.
Obligatory Google map link.

In Yemen, a US official told The Media Line that the establishment of a credible, sustainable counterterrorism program would be an important step for Yemen’s government in bolstering its security capabilities. He would not confirm that there are plans to build a new prison facility on Socotra. “At this point, speculation and rumor (about a prison) is both baseless and unproductive.”

Residents of the unspoiled island are not enthusiastic about the possibility of hosting dozens of detainees from Guantanamo.
Other developing events and activities on Socotra.
