[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Two persons were killed and another maimed after gunnies shot up them inside a mosque in eastern Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
Province.

Senior Afghan militant with suspected ISIS links 'killed in drone attack'
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A missile-firing drone killed six people in Afghanistan on Monday including a veteran murderous Moslem believed to have defected to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) from the Taliban, Afghan officials said.

The senior murderous Moslem, former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mullah Abdul Rauf, was killed in the violence-plagued southern province of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, officials there said.

Police chief Nabi Jan Mullahkhel said Rauf was travelling in a car when the drone attacked. The other casualties included his brother-in-law and four Paks, Mullahkhel said.

He did not give more details.
I can say no more!
of the attack. The United States operates drones over Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistain. U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Rauf had been influential in Afghanistan's Islamist murderous Moslem movement for well over a decade.

Media reports last month said he had begun recruiting for ISIS, part of a push by the movement to gain traction beyond its stronghold in Iraq and Syria.

Afghanistan's main intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS), said in a statement Rauf was in charge of ISIS in southwestern Afghanistan and he was killed just after mid-day in "a successful military operation."

Helmand's deputy governor, Mohammad Jan Rasulyar, said Rauf's membership of ISIS could not be confirmed but his associates were dressed in black outfits often worn by ISIS members.

"It is too early to confirm that he was Daish but his people were wearing the same clothes and mask," Rasulyar said, referring to ISIS.

A U.S. military report released by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks in 2011 said that Rauf had tried to pass himself off as a low level Taliban worker who "delivered bread," but that interrogators suspected he was more senior.
Ynet has a slightly different view of events:
The top recruiter for the Islamic State group's affiliate in Afghanistan was killed by a drone strike Monday along with at least four other murderous Moslems, local officials said, marking the first such attack on the murderous Moslem group in a volatile country where it has a small but growing following.

The deputy governor of the southern Helmand province identified the recruiter as Abdul Rauf, saying he and four comrades were killed when a drone-fired missile struck their car. Afghanistan's intelligence service put the corpse count at six and said Afghan forces fired the missile.
And from An Nahar (clearly, this is a popular story):
Locals say Khadim's men, numbering around 300, were often in conflict with Taliban officials in Helmand.

"He had deep differences with the Taliban (leadership), which had recently sent a delegation to bury the hatchet, but he was killed before this was settled," a Taliban capo told AFP.

Somali Lawmakers Approve New Cabinet as Shebab Kills MP
[AnNahar] Somali politicians approved a new cabinet on Monday, hours after Shabaab bully boyz assassinated a colleague as he made his way to parliament.

The killing in the capital Mogadishu is the latest in a string of liquidations of politicians in the war-torn east African country.

Speaker of parliament Mohammed Osman Jawari said that 191 out of 220 politicians present had endorsed the new cabinet, consisting of 26 ministers, plus 40 deputy ministers.

Security was beefed up in the volatile city ahead of the session, but gunnies managed to shoot dead an MP as he left to go cast his vote.

"Abdulahi Qayad Barre was rubbed out, men killed him as he left his house to go to parliament," fellow MP Abdukarim Hajji said.

Barre is the first politician to be assassinated this year. At least five MPs were killed in 2014.

The Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shabaab rebels are fighting to overthrow the country's internationally-backed government.

The murderous Moslems say they are targeting MPs for allowing the deployment of foreign troops in Somalia.

"Shabaab commandos shot and killed Barre, and all the so-called MPs are a legitimate target subject to be killed or captured, to face the justice of Allah," Shabaab front man Sheikh Abdul Aziz Abu Musab told AFP.

"This the fate of all non believers."

Shabaab attacks in Somalia have targeted key government and security sites in an apparent bid to discredit claims by the authorities and African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
troops that they are winning the war against the group.

Somalia's parliament is also riven by political infighting. International donors have repeatedly warned that the power struggles are stalling progress towards stability.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
politicians finally approved the new prime minister's last list of candidates.

Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, who was named prime minister in December, had been forced to revise his choices after MPs opposed his first proposed cabinet line-up.

Somalia is due to vote on a new constitution next year ahead of elections in 2016, but Shabaab remains a major threat.

Libyan army says has retaken main camp in Benghazi
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Libyan special forces said on Monday they had retaken the main military base in Benghazi from Islamist fighters that they have been battling since October, part of a wider struggle four years after the ousting of autocrat Moammer Qadaffy.

Special forces commander Wanis Bukhamada told Rooters by telephone that his troops had seized the army camp, on a road to the airport outside Libya's second biggest city, as well as nearby offices belonging to state cellphone operator al-Madar.

A video posted on social media websites appeared to show Bukhamada at the camp's gate.

Backed by troops led by general Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, special forces launched their offensive against Islamists in the city in mid-October aiming to retake the city seized by Islamists last summer. They have regained control of central parts of the city, the airport and several military camps.

But there was no end to heavy fighting near Benghazi's port, residents said. The port, the main gateway for food imports, has had to close.

Army forces in eastern Libya, including Benghazi, are loyal to the internationally recognised prime minister, Abdullah al-Thinni, who had to flee the capital Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
in August after a rival faction seized it.

The new Tripoli rulers have reinstated the old parliament, which set up its own administration and appointed a chief of staff commanding forces also calling themselves the Libyan army.

Libya has failed to build up a national army and efficient state institutions since the end of Qadaffy's one-man rule, and the country is now effectively controlled by former rebel brigades.

#1  Libya has failed to build up a national army and efficient state institutions since the end of Qadaffy's one-man rule, and the country is now effectively controlled by former rebel brigades.

That was never the issue. The issue was whether the various Libyan factions had enough common interests to set aside their differences and have them sorted out via democratic elections. When the differences are this stark, only decisive military victory, followed by intense political suppression of the losing side will settle them.

forces and LNA forces have continued today for the fourth consecutive day. According to an LNA source, at least 11 fighters have been killed in the fighting. Eight were buried yesterday. Local murderous Moslems supporting the LNA were also said to figure among the casualties.

Figures for IS casualties are unknown.

The source added that fresh LNA reinforcements, including arms and men, arrived today at the heavily guarded LNA checkpoint some 27 kilometres west of the town on the Beida road.

Meanwhile of consignment of new armoured vehicles are said to have arrived in Tobruk today from the UAE. They are reportedly earmarked for the fight at Derna.

Early last week fighting at Ain Mara left a reported 40 dead.

IS claim to take over Libyan town near Ben Jawad

A video posted on social media and claiming to have been filmed yesterday shows a convoy of some 40 vehicles driving with some displaying the black IS flag along the main street of the bleak desert town, which lies some 10 kilometres south of the main coast road.

They are reported to still be there today, demanding that the residents "repent" on non-Islamic practices and pledge allegiance to the Islamic State, its "Caliph", His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

, and his "emir" in the town, named as one Ali Al-Qarqaa.

The group, which is alleged to include some foreigners, is said to have come from Sirte, itself now reported to have a significant IS presence.

To have managed to travel the 140 kilometres between Sirte and Nawfaliya would have been almost impossible without the knowledge of Operation Sunrise forces. Although they and Libya Dawn have until now disputed the presence of any IS forces in the country, it was reported that there was a clash yesterday between Sunrise and IS in which as many as five Misratans fighting with Sunrise died.

With Nawfaliya in its hands IS would be able to control the east-west coastal road currently closed because of the fighting further east of ben Jawad between Operation Sunrise and the forces loyal to the Libya government. At present the only town fully controlled by IS is Derna, although it believed to have cells operating in Tripoli

and Sabratha as well as Sirte.

Today, it is reported that IS has reinforced the entrances of Nawfaliya to prevent Sunrise attacks.

Boko Haram in New Niger Attack as MPs Vote on Sending Troops
[AnNahar] Nigeria's Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
fighters launched a fresh attack in neighboring Niger on Monday, as parliament in Niamey was set to vote on joining a regional force against the Islamists.

The bully boyz raided a prison in the southeastern border town of Diffa, which they first attacked on Friday, but were repelled after a heavy exchange of fire, humanitarian sources said.

"The attack failed. The assailants were quite easily pushed back," one source told AFP.

Following the rebuffed Boko Haram assault, witnesses in Diffa said a deadly kaboom destroyed a local market just a day after it was struck by a mortar shell that killed one person and injured 20.

"Everything blew up -- I saw bodies everywhere," a local merchant told AFP by telephone Monday, confirming other witness accounts that there were both deaths and injuries in the blast.

The renewed violence came as Niger's parliament was expected on Monday to support a proposal to deploy troops inside Nigeria to help in the battle, along with soldiers from Chad, which has a battle-hardened army, and Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
No casualty toll was immediately available after the raid by Boko Haram, which has widened a deadly six-year insurgency in Nigeria with attacks in neighboring countries.

A journalist in Diffa said he saw the bodies of Boko Haram fighters in a hearse but was unable to count them.

Some Boko Haram fighters sought to hide out in the town. "The soldiers are looking for them, weapons at the ready. The army has encircled Diffa," the journalist said.

Another journalist said some of the fighters were being held in the prison they attacked.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau vowed in a new video released on Monday to defeat the military force taking shape to fight the bandidos bully boyz in Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger.

The small nation of Benin, on Nigeria's western border, on Saturday agreed to join the alliance, which would include 8,700 troops, police and civilians.

But Shekau dismissed the force, previously set at around 7,500, saying: "We can seize them one by one."

Niger's Defense Minister Mahamadou Karidjo said Sunday that he hoped for a favorable parliamentary vote to "bring the final blow against the forces of evil".

"The boys are chomping at the bit to go" to fight Boko Haram, he said on public television.

"The defensive position our forces have held for more than three months is not a good position," Karidjo added. "We shall eradicate the Boko Haram plague in the region."

Boko Haram also launched attacks in Niger on Sunday around Diffa, triggering running battles with local soldiers.

Niamey last December announced "the biggest military operation ever mounted in Niger" when it massed troops in the Diffa region.

According to the local governor, "nearly 3,000" soldiers are posted "every 10 or 15 kilometers (six or nine miles) along the border with Nigeria".

Chad deployed hundreds of tanks and other army vehicles on Nigerian territory more than a week ago, while other Chadian forces have moved into Cameroon to join the army there in the strategic town of Fotokol.

The kidnapping occurred on Sunday and all of the survivors have since been released, said a resident, on condition of anonymity, whose wife was among those kidnapped. An official from a local NGO also confirmed the incident.

According to the security source, who is based in the region, the victims were traveling in a bus stormed by alleged Boko Haram members.

"The bus was coming from Koza and was traveling to Mora," the source said, referring to two towns in the country's extreme north near the Nigerian border.

Arsonists burn 14,000 chickens
[Dhaka Tribune] Miscreants have burnt some 14,000 chickens setting fire to a covered van with petrol at Ramchandrapur in Muktagachha of Mymensingh district.

The covered van was completely damaged and all the chickens it was carrying were also killed in the fire, police said.

The driver of the covered van Abdur Rahman and the locals said a group of 7-8 miscreants with sticks barred the van of Kazi Farm Ltd carrying the chicken felling logs on the road in the area on the way to Madhupur from Gazipur.

They poured petrol and set fire to the van in the early hours of Monday.

They also attempted to burn the van’s driver and the helper with petrol, but they managed to escape the spot by running away, van helper Khorshed Alam said.

The arsonists left the place in motorcycles, before the locals arrive, the driver and helper of the van said.

Confirming the incident, Muktagachha OC Kamal Hossain said police were trying to identify and arrest the miscreants who had burnt the van and the chickens.

British Muslim charged with planning to behead soldier
[Ynet] A British teen planned to behead a soldier after he was inspired by the Islamic gunnies who murdered soldier Lee Rigby in 2013, a prosecutor said Monday.

Prosecutor Annabel Darlow told the Old Bailey court that Brusthom Ziamani told his girlfriend he planned to "kill soldiers" shortly before he was placed in durance vile

in August carrying a 12-inch (30-centimeter) knife and a hammer in his backpack.

She said 19-year-old Ziamani idolized Michael Adebolajo, one of two men who hacked Rigby to death near his barracks.

Officials said Ziamani had used an alias in Facebook posts in which he called for the implementation of Sharia law in Britannia and said he was willing to die for Islam. Ziamani is charged with preparing an act of terrorism. He denies the charge.

Gunshots Fired at Police in Marseille Housing Estate
[AnNahar] Police said Monday they came under fire as they rushed into a housing estate in the French city of Marseille after residents alerted them that hooded people had shot "Kalashnikovs" in the air.

The outbreak of violence in La Castellane, an estate known as a drug trafficking hotspot, came just hours before Prime Minister Manuel Valls visited the southern port city to hail the progress made in fighting crime.
Life is full of such little ironies.
It was not clear what sparked the violence at a time of high jitters following the Gay Paree attacks last month, but Marseille is known for rampant gang-related gun crime that has even prompted calls for the army to be sent in to tough neighborhoods.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve told news hounds that police recovered seven Kalashnikovs and "several" kilograms of drugs.

In a speech to security forces on his visit, Valls said the shots, which left no one hurt, were "unacceptable" and said the push to reduce crime was a "long-term struggle."

According to a source close to the case, residents in the housing estate -- where a 25-year-old was rubbed out last month in a settling of scores -- alerted police earlier Monday that "five to ten" hooded people had fired "Kalashnikovs" in the air.

Police rushed to the scene to deal with the situation, and on their arrival, they were shot at while still in their cars, said local public security director Pierre-Marie Bourniquel.

Children at a creche in the 7,000-strong estate, where football star Zinedine Zidane famously grew up, were moved to a neighboring school.

Security forces were still hunting for those who fired the Kalashnikovs, and riot police will deploy in the estate over the next few days, Bourniquel said.

- Easy availability of Kalashnikovs -
Police say much of the violence in Marseille is linked to pie fights between multiple rival gangs battling for control of the drugs trade in the city's poorest neighborhoods.

The violence, they say, is made worse by the easy availability of high-caliber weapons, with Kalashnikov automatic rifles being the murder instrument of choice.

In 2013, Valls, who was then interior minister, had warned that entire neighborhoods were "lost to the dealers."

Ironically, he visited the city Monday to pay tribute to the "excellent" results of measures taken over more than two years to fight crime.

In an interview with regional daily La Provence, Valls said crime in the city had tumbled, pointing to a 30-percent drop in armed robberies over two years and a 20-percent fall in physical violence against people.

Marseille has been a Mediterranean trading hub since antiquity and has long had a reputation as a hotbed of crime.

In the 19th century, the level of registered offenses was three times higher there than in any other French city and there have been regular outbursts of gang violence ever since.

Drugs-related crime is also not new, with the city's central role in the international heroin trade famously portrayed in the 1971 film "The French Connection".

That trade was controlled by powerful international syndicates and the heroin passing through Marseille was largely destined for other markets.

In contrast, the current violence is seen as the product of a free-for-all in the supply of marijuana and related soft drugs to the local market.

in northern Iraq, the American military said Monday.

The advance is the latest push by Kurdish forces around Mosul, considered a crucial battleground for an eventual major counteroffensive against the IS group by Iraqi government troops and the Kurds.

"Security forces from the Kurdish region seized three bridgeheads on the west bank of the Tigris River, north of Mosul in formerly held Daesh (IS) areas," the U.S. military command overseeing the air war said in a statement.

It said the assault was backed up by four "precise and effective" air raids by the U.S.-led coalition between Friday and Sunday.

Coalition military advisers also provided "intelligence assistance" to the Kurdish fighters, the command added.

"Kurdish peshmerga forces now hold the gains they have made and are postured to retake additional territory from Daesh in the vicinity of Mosul."

As of Sunday, the coalition had conducted 2,341 bombing raids in Iraq and Syria since August 8, with U.S. warplanes accounting for 1,890 of the strikes, according to the Pentagon.

5 Israeli-Arabs indicted for throwing firebombs at Jews' homes
[Ynet] Suspects belong to wide-scale Fatah-led terror network in At-Tur neighborhood in East Jerusalem, Shin Bet says.

Five Israeli-Arabs involved in the creation of a terror network including dozens of residents of the At-Tur neighborhood in East Jerusalem were indicted Monday.

The suspects were charged with intentionally causing damage to a vehicle, rioting, an attempted aggravated assault of a policeman, negligent use of weapons and aggravated battery.

The suspects' terror activity included hurling Molotov cocktails, fireworks, stones and even explosives at security forces and houses in the neighborhood belonging to Jews.

A Shin Bet investigation was launched following an escalation in terror activity in the neighborhood, whose residents are all Israeli citizens.

The investigation found that a terror network operating the neighborhood was formed in July 2014 under the command of Fatah operative Marwan Khalil Jayousi, 23.

The members of the network were involved, among other things, in an attack on a police car that was dispersing a protest in the neighborhood in August 2014. The assault on the police car caused it to roll down into a valley, and its driver had to be rescued by his fellow coppers.

After Jayousi was nabbed
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
in September 2014, the terror network continued operating until January 2015 under the command of Bahar Amad al-Maghribi, 23, also a Fatah operative.

Al-Maghribi, the Shin Bet claimed, was also involved in the production of bombs and was in charge of funding the terror network's activity as well as supplying the neighborhood's residents with Molotov cocktails and fireworks.

The Shin Bet said that the suspects' violent activity could've resulted in the death or serious injury of civilians as well as security forces.

Jemaah Islamiyah plot to bomb the Pope revealed
[Gulf Today] The leader of a Philippine National Police elite unit on Monday disclosed they have uncovered a plot by Jemaah Islamiyah to bomb Pope Francis' motorcade during his recent five-day visit to the Philippines. Deputy Director Getulio Napenas made the disclosure during testimony before a Senate hearing on the deaths of 44 police commandos during a raid in Maguindanao province on January 25.

Napenas revealed they received reliable information that Marwan, a senior member of the JI who was killed in the raid, plotted to bomb the pontiff's convoy while his motorcade was on Teodoro Kalaw Street in Manila on January 18. The Pope was on his way to attend a major event on that penultimate day of his five-day visit.

Napenas also disputed the MILF claim that they only suffered a total of 18 casualties. The commandos killed at least 250 MILF members and several BIFF members, he told the committee.

Syria Regime Air Strikes Kill 15 near Damascus
[AnNahar] At least 15 people were killed and dozens maimed on Monday in government air strikes on an area outside the capital Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

There were no immediate details on the breakdown of those killed in the strikes, which are the latest to hit the town of Douma in the rebel stronghold of Eastern Ghouta.

The opposition bastion, east of Damascus, was still reeling from a massive government aerial assault on Thursday that came after rebels fired more than 120 rockets and mortar rounds into the capital.

The rebel barrage killed 10 people in Damascus, including a child, while the government air strikes and surface-to-surface missiles fired at Eastern Ghouta killed at least 82 people, among them 18 children.

Eastern Ghouta has been under government siege for nearly two years as the army tries to break the rebel hold over the area.

The siege has created medical and food shortages, exacerbating dire humanitarian needs created by regular government bombardment of the area.

Obama, Family Confirm Death of IS Hostage Kayla Mueller
[AnNahar] U.S. President Barack Obama
Ready to Rule from Day One...
on Tuesday confirmed the death of Kayla Jean Mueller, who was taken hostage in Syria by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group, and vowed to track down her captors.

"No matter how long it takes, the United States will find and bring to justice the murderous Moslems who are responsible for Kayla's captivity and death," he said in a statement.

The 26-year-old aid worker from Arizona was captured in August 2013 in Aleppo.

The IS group claimed last week she had been killed in an air strike by a Jordanian warplane in the Syrian city of Raqa, the myrmidon group's self-proclaimed "capital."

The White House said that over the weekend IS had sent Mueller's family a "private message" with additional information, that was "authenticated" by intelligence, allowing them to confirm her death.

Parents Carl and Marsha Mueller on Tuesday voiced their heartbreak at the death of their daughter, but said they were proud of her and the humanitarian work she did.

"We are so proud of the person Kayla was and the work that she did while she was here with us. She lived with purpose, and we will work every day to honor her legacy."

"Our hearts are breaking for our only daughter, but we will continue on in peace, dignity, and love for her."

In a letter from captivity in early 2014 -- which was partially redacted -- Muller said she was "completely unharmed" by her captors but heavy-hearted about the toll it must be taken on her family.

"Just the thought of you all sends me into a fit of tears," she wrote in the letter released by her family.

"If you could say I have 'suffered' at all throughout this whole experience it is only in knowing how much suffering I have put you all through."

She dreamt about family camping trips and imagined meeting them at the airport if she were released.

"I miss you all as if it has been a decade of forced separation."

Obama praised Mueller's humanitarian work at home, in the Middle East and elsewhere.

"Kayla dedicated her life to helping others in need at home and around the world. In Prescott, Arizona, she volunteered at a women's shelter and worked at an HIV/AIDS clinic."

"She worked with humanitarian organizations in India, Israel, and the Paleostinian territories, compelled by her desire to serve others.

"Eventually, her path took her to Turkey, where she helped provide comfort and support to Syrian refugees forced to flee their homes during the war."
PJ Media adds:
Mueller was kidnapped in August 2013 while leaving a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Aleppo, Syria. Doctors Without Borders said Mueller was not employed by the group but was accompanying a technician who had been contracted to do repairs on one of their facilities.

Iraq Ground Offensive Looms as Baghdad Bomb Kills 14
[AnNahar] A top U.S. envoy said Iraqi troops would launch a major ground offensive against the Islamic State group in the coming weeks, as a suicide bomber killed 14 people in Baghdad Monday.

IS spearheaded an offensive that swept through large areas north and west of Baghdad last June, and Iraqi forces are battling to regain ground with support from U.S.-led air strikes.

John Allen, the U.S. coordinator for the anti-IS coalition of Western and Arab countries, said Sunday Iraqi troops would begin a major offensive "in the weeks ahead".

"When the Iraqi forces begin the ground campaign to take back Iraq, the coalition will provide major firepower associated with that," he told Jordan's official Petra news agency.

Iraqi forces have already carried out operations near Baghdad and in Diyala and Salaheddin provinces north of the capital.

IS-led militants were stopped short of Baghdad in June and have since been pushed back, but can still carry out deadly attacks.

On Monday, a suicide bomber attacked Baghdad's Shiite-majority Kadhimiyah district, killing at least 14 people and wounding at least 43, officials said.

The bomber struck near pavement vendors in crowded Aden Square in the second suicide bombing to hit the city in three days.

On Saturday, an attack inside a restaurant in the Baghdad Jadida area killed at least 23 people.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Monday's attack, but suicide bombings are almost exclusively carried out by Sunni extremists in Iraq, including IS.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the air campaign, launched in Iraq in August and expanded to Syria the following month, was helping ground forces win back territory and depriving the jihadists of key funds. There have been 2,000 air strikes on IS so far, Kerry told a security conference in Munich. These had helped ground forces retake some 700 square kilometers (270 square miles) of territory from the jihadists, or "one-fifth of the area they had in their control", he said.

Kerry did not specify whether the recaptured territory was in Iraq or Syria. But he added the coalition had "deprived the militants of the use of 200 oil and gas facilities... disrupted their command structure... squeezed its finance and dispersed its personnel".

Coalition warplanes launched three air strikes against IS in Syria in the 24 hours to 0600 GMT on Monday, the Pentagon said, and another six in Iraq.

The Observatory also reported at least 15 people killed and dozens wounded on Monday in Syrian regime air strikes on the rebel-held Douma area east of Damascus.
Another An Nahar article adds a second explosion:
A roadside kaboom also went kaboom! in a commercial district in the Shiite-majority Husseiniyah area near Baghdad on Monday, killing at least one person and wounding at least seven.

Since the loss of Kobane late last month to Kurdish forces, many bandidos hard boyz marked for suicide operations within the group have fled or defected to rival militias, anti-ISIS activist group Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently claims.

A source from inside the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, the de-facto ISIS capital, said that the bandidos hard boyz had set up road blocks and imposed strict security checks to stop jacket wallahs abandoning their tasks.

"There is great tension in Raqqa city, where ISIS suffered many defections in the past few days, said activist Abu Mohammed, according to UK newspaper the Daily Mail. "A source from within ISIS has confirmed that most of defections are from suicide bombers, where these defections are considered a painful blow to the group."

Anyone caught attempting to dodge their deadly orders is executed, the activist said.

ISIS commanders reportedly select foreign bandidos hard boyz for suicide missions because they often lack experience in fighting ‐ with special training camps designed to filter out foreigners of little military to the group and prepare them for suicide operations, according to the Daily Mail.

ISIS is also under pressure from the heaviest U.S.-led air strikes since the start of the year.

At least 70 of its fighters have been killed by an escalation of the strikes since the group released a video showing it burning a captive Jordanian pilot to death last week, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

On Monday, ISIS reportedly withdrew some of its hard boyz and equipment from areas northeast of the Syrian city of Aleppo, rebels and residents say, adding to signs of strain in the Syrian provinces of its self-declared caliphate.

#3  Anyone actually believe 70 casualties has them under any pressure?

It's cumulative. 5500 sorties have been flown, using precision weaponry against ragtag rebels. 100K sorties were flown during Desert Storm, but a lot of that was dumb bombs, a fair chunk of which did a limited amount of damage. At this rate, I expect ISIS to disintegrate before the end of the year, as long as the Kurds and the Shiites keep up the ground campaign. Ultimately, they are serving the role of the Northern Alliance during the collapse of the Taliban in 2001 and 2002.

#5  The reason ISIS is crumbling is because Uncle Sam did the heavy lifting for almost a decade. There's no way the Shiites and the Kurds could have stood up against Saddam's remnants if the US had declared victory and left after executing Saddam. We are talking probably north of 100K men with battlefield experience fighting both Iran and Coalition forces.

It's not just the number of sorties or the quality of munitions, or even the accuracy of target selection intelligence; the will to accept collateral damage or mistakes can really ramp up the 'effectiveness' of the attacks.

Obama has shown little reluctance to kill entire families via air attack when high-value jihadists were spotted.

#8  In the case of an active conventional battlefield, with an adversary who holds ground and needs to resupply his units with fresh troops, food, water and equipment, across a terrain that's mostly desert, there's no shortage of targets to interdict.

#10  When a string of conquests proves they have Allah's blessing, a string of defeats proves they do not. Even having to scurry about in women's clothing and civilian vehicles instead of triumphant columns of captured humvees drives home the message of defeat rather than clever, temporary subterfuge.
