#1  On February 4, 1877, Trevelyan was born Hilda Marie Antoinette Anna Tucker, in Hackney, London, daughter of John Joseph Tucker, a farmer, and his French wife, Helene Adolphine Marie Foulon. She was educated at the Ursuline convent in Upton. She first appeared on stage at the age of twelve in a production of The Silver King, a melodrama by Henry Arthur Jones and Henry Herman. By the age of sixteen she was touring in the musical comedy A Gaiety Girl. Her first important London engagement was at the Court Theatre in 1898, understudying Pattie Browne in the role of Avonia Bunn in Trelawny of the 'Wells', a part that she later played many times in her own right.

Early in her career she attracted the attention of James Barrie. She toured as Lady Babbie in his romance The Little Minister, playing the part more than 700 times. She returned to London and appeared in two conspicuous successes, A Chinese Honeymoon (taking over from Louie Freear as Fi Fi) and 'Op o' Me Thumb, as Amanda. In 1904 she resumed her association with Barrie, touring in his Little Mary. He was working on the stage version of Peter Pan at the time, and he cast her as Wendy to the Peter of Nina Boucicault. Over the years she played the part nearly a thousand times.

In Barrie's Alice-Sit-by-the-Fire (1905) she had a supporting role in the London cast, in which the main female roles were taken by Ellen Terry and Irene Vanbrugh as mother and daughter. When the piece toured, Terry remained, and Trevelyan succeeded to Vanbrugh's part. She followed this comic role with "an exquisite performance as the hapless, terror-stricken orphan" in Herbert Beerbohm Tree's production of Oliver Twist.

West End success
After playing Tweeny in a revival of Barrie's The Admirable Crichton in 1908, Trevelyan was given her biggest chance so far, as Maggie in What Every Woman Knows, a part Barrie wrote with her in mind. She made a great success in the role; The Observer wrote of her "quite triumphant attainment of the art which art conceals … the audience received this quaintest of comedies with rapturous relish throughout." The Times said that Trevelyan was "the darling, the acclaimed idol of a house excited to the highest pitch of enthusiasm." A silent film of the piece was later made, with Trevelyan the only member of the original cast.

In 1910 Trevelyan married a fellow-actor, and writer, Sydney Blow (1878–1961). After the success of What Every Woman Knows, she went into management for a time, in partnership with Edmund Gwenn. In 1916 she had another Barrie hit with A Kiss for Cinderella.

Post-war and later years
In 1924 Trevelyan appeared in a new production of Arnold Bennett's The Great Adventure. The Observer's critic wrote, "When I say that Miss Hilda Trevelyan's Janet Cannot seemed to me quite perfect there will doubtless be people to tell me that the part has been done better. But I don't think I shall believe them." In 1926 she took over from Mary Jerrold in a revival of Barrie's Mary Rose.

One of the most notable of Trevelyan's performances in the 1930s was with Nina Boucicault in a BBC radio broadcast called There's More Magic in the Air, in which they played their original roles of nearly thirty years earlier, in a "composite fantasy" in which Peter Pan and Wendy mingled with Prospero and Ariel. The Manchester Guardian reported that their voices were wonderfully clear and young. One of the great successes of the last years of Trevelyan's career was Ian Hay's Housemaster, in which she played Barbara Fane. The play ran for 662 performances from November 1936.

After appearing in a revival of Michael Barringer's comedy-thriller Inquest in 1939 Trevelyan retired. She and her husband, who outlived her, enjoyed twenty years of retirement at their country house near Henley-on-Thames. There were no children of the marriage. She died at Henley-on-Thames, on November 10, 1959, at the age of 82. (Reprint: Wikipedia)

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief: August 20, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • The Taliban’s Director of Culture in Helmand province issued a warning about posting on social media using Afghanistan’s tri-color flag. He claimed the government would take screenshots of offenders and that action will be taken. The warning was prompted by the celebration of Afghan Independence Day.

  • Taliban reprisals against non-combatants in Panjshir are being widely reported across multiple Resistance-affiliated organizations. Many arrests have been made, and the charges given are typically related to providing support to the NRF. Residents of some villages have been told to vacate their homes and leave their districts. Violence has also been reported, but there is not enough information available yet to speculate.

  • Persistent reports continue to arrive about the Taliban possibly having arrested an American filmmaker in Kabul. According to the rumors, American independent filmmaker Ivor Shearer and Afghan producer Faizullah Faizbakhsh were arrested on Wednesday while filming near the location where the former al-Qaeda leader was killed in a drone strike. They were accused of being American spies by Taliban standing guard, then detained and blindfolded by about 50 armed Taliban intelligence operatives. No further information was available.

  • Reports from the impromptu conference in Kandahar suggest that Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada was recorded declaring war against the United States and its allies. We are awaiting verification of the video/audio recordings.

  • Taliban reinforcements began arriving in several locations across Panjshir. A source stated that the size of the force is approximately 400 fighters. Additionally, security elements dispatched from Kabul to Kandahar arrived and were deployed around the city.

People from the same family are among the people who suffered a variety of wounds after a mortar hit their house during the night.

The maimed were evacuated by the Somali police forces to the nearby hospital for treatment, according to the witnesses.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the mortar shelling which came hours after al-Shabaab

Mogadishu hotel attack, Day 2: After 30 hours it’s over - at least 30 toes up, including all Al Shabaab turbans, 40 maimed
At least 12 killed as Somalia hotel siege enters second day
The initial attack can be seen here.
[DAWN] At least 12 people were killed when Al Qaeda-linked holy warriors attacked a hotel in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, seizing hostages who authorities were still battling to free 24 hours later, an intelligence officer said on Saturday.

The attackers blasted their way into the Hayat Hotel on Friday evening with two boom-mobiles before opening fire. Somalia’s Al-Shabaab

turbans grabbed credit.

"So far we have confirmed 12 people, mostly civilians, died," Mohammed, an intelligence officer who only gave one name, told Rooters.

The button men were holding an unknown number of hostages on the second floor of the building, Mohammed said, preventing authorities from using heavy weapons.

They had also bombed out the stairs to make it harder to access certain floors, he said.

As the siege entered its second day on Saturday evening, authorities had secured 95 per cent of the building, the state broadcaster Somali National Television said. The broadcaster did not give an updated number of casualties.

Those battling the holy warriors inside the hotel include Gaashan, a paramilitary force specialising in counter-insurgency, a bigwig told Rooters.

The detonations sent huge plumes of smoke over the busy junction on Friday night, and the sound of gunfire still crackled across the capital on Saturday evening.

Explosions were heard on Friday night as government forces tried to wrest control of the hotel back from the krazed killers, witnesses said.

Large sections of the hotel were destroyed by the fighting, they said.

Friday’s attack was the first such major incident since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud took office in May.

The Al Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group grabbed credit for the attack, according to a translation by the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist group statements.

Somali parliament meeting canceled due to militant attack
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[REGNUM] The meeting of the Somali Parliament was canceled due to the attack of militants of the radical group "Al-Shabaab" (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation) on the Hayat Hotel in Mogadishu. This was reported on August 20 by Garowe Online.

A meeting of the Somali parliament was canceled after al-Shabaab militants attacked the Hayat hotel in Mogadishu on Friday evening after heavy explosions.

The attack has already killed 16 people. The Somali Guardian notes that the hotel is still home to a number of prominent politicians, including members of parliament.

Death toll rises to 30 from ongoing hotel attack in Somalia's capital

[Garowe] The federal government of Somalia has deployed elite Haramacad paramilitary officers to the Hayat Hotel which is still under Al-Shabaab siege, just over 20 hours after the militants waged a deadly attack targeting the facility which is located near the K-4 junction.

For over 20 hours, security forces mainly drawn from the police and the Intelligence Agency [NISA] have been exchanging gunfire with the militants, who rammed into the hotel and occupied the fourth floor, making it difficult for the forces to effectively counter them.

On Saturday afternoon, the government confirmed the deployment of Turkish-trained Haramacad police officers who will now pursue the remaining militants. The paramilitary forces are only deployed during special complicated assignments upon request by the security teams.

The Alpha group, which has been on the site since Friday, failed to comb the area, leading to the change of tactics by calling the special forces. Sources say one of the militants is still holed up in the hotel, making it difficult for security forces to retake the hotel.

Al-Shabaab, which controls huge swathes of rural central and southern Somalia, confirmed that its infantry team attacked the hotel but did immediately reveal who the target was. It was the first major attack under the administration of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

State media reported that the death toll has risen to 30 after 15 more bodies were discovered in the rubbles. Initially, the death toll was 15 after security forces managed to remove the bodies for preservation ahead of identification by their families.

Islamic militants have stormed a hotel in Somalia's capital, engaging in an hours-long exchange of fire with the security forces that left at least 20 people dead, according to police and witnesses.

In addition, at least 40 people were wounded in the late Friday night attack and security forces rescued many others, including children, from the scene at Mogadishu's popular Hayat Hotel, they said Saturday.

Somali forces were still trying to end the siege of the hotel almost 24 hours after the attack started. Gunfire could still be heard Saturday evening as security forces tried to contain the last gunmen thought to be holed up on the hotel's top floor.

The Islamic extremist group al-Shabab, which has ties with al-Qaida, claimed responsibility for the attack, the latest of its frequent attempts to strike places visited by government officials. The attack on the hotel is the first major terror incident in Mogadishu since Somalia's new leader, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, took over in May.

There was no immediate word on the identities of the victims, but many are believed to be civilians.

Mohamed Abdirahman, director of Mogadishu's Madina Hospital, told the AP that 40 people were admitted there with wounds or injuries from the attack. While nine were sent home after getting treatment, five are in critical condition in the ICU, he said.

Prominent terrorist leader killed by security forces in North Sinai’s El-Arish
[AlAhram] Prominent terrorist leader Jamil Suleiman Zuraei, also known as Abu Anas, and his son were killed on Friday in an operation by the Armed Forces in El-Arish city, the capital of North Sinai governorate, a well-informed source told Ahram Online.

Abu Anas was one of the top leaders of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
terrorist group’s branch in North Sinai, the so-called "Sinai Province," formerly known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis.

Although the terrorist group had announced in May 2022 that Abu Anas had been killed, this turned out to have been disinformation, as his body was not found at the time, the sources said.

According to the sources, Abu Anas was hiding in the vicinity of the fence of El-Arish Airport, which is under construction, when he and his son — both of whom were armed — were targeted.

The sources also revealed that other leading bad boyz were potted in operations over the past week; some of them were Paleostinian runaways.

The most prominent among them was Hamza al-Zamili, the mufti of the terrorist group, who was leading a cell in the Gelbana village in North Sinai, close to the navigational strip of the Suez Canal, according to the sources.

Since 2013, the army has been launching one operation after another against terrorist forces in North Sinai, among the most important of which was Comprehensive Operation Sinai launched in 2018 (COS 2018).

As a result, the rate of terrorist attacks in North Sinai has declined in the past few years following massive security and military operations.

elements have bombed a number of religious monuments in several areas of Shabwah over the past days.

Activists attributed the reasons for the bombing of domes and shrines to the fact that the takfiri elements see them as "Shirk", (which means in Islam is the sin of idolatry or polytheism), must be demolished for fear that the people may deviating from the true religion, and that their demolition is obligatory and desirable.

The destruction of the shrine of the scholar Badas caused widespread anger among the people of Shabwah, considering it a crime that offends the religious symbols of the preachers of the province.

It is worth noting that al-Qaeda terrorist elements had destroyed al-Noor Mosque in al-Khokha district of Hodeidah province. The mosque dates back to 700 years.

In addition to destroying dozens of shrines and religious domes along the west coast, and in various southern governorates.

In April, the terrorist elements destroyed the tomb of a Sufi scholar, Ali bin Hilal, and another known as Ubaid bin Ahmed, in al-Madara area, and demolished them on the pretext of heresy and ’haram’ (prohibited).

Europe
Malmo mall shooting suspect is a 15-year-old boy, police say
[DW] A man was killed and a female passerby injured in Sweden's Malmo, with police describing it as a assassination. Gang-related murders have been on a rise in Sweden — a major issue ahead of next month's elections.

Police in the southern Swedish city of Malmo said Saturday that a suspect arrested over a fatal shooting at a shopping center is a 15-year-old boy.

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE SUSPECT?
The Aftonbladet newspaper reported that the unnamed boy, who was detained a short time after Friday's shooting, has allegedly been involved in criminal activity for several years.

The police, school and healthcare had previously submitted several reports of concern about him, Aftonbladet wrote.

The paper said a court last year had ordered the boy to be taken into the care of social services, due to his behavior.

Aftonbladet said the young suspect fled the mall in a taxi after the shooting but was later picked up by police.

He has denied any crimes, according to the Sydsvenskan newspaper.

HOW DID THE SHOOTING UNFOLD?
Police were called to the Emporia shopping mall in Malmo on Friday afternoon after reports of gunfire.

A 31-year-old man was maimed in the incident and later died from his injuries.

A female passerby was also maimed. Her injuries are serious but not life threatening.

The mall was evacuated and police said they questioned witnesses and watched video surveillance from the scene.

The shooting was likely a assassination, Swedish broadcaster SVT cited local police chief Petra Stenkula as saying.

According to the broadcaster, the police believe that the young suspect acted alone but others could have been involved.

Aftonbladet said the dead victim was known to police as belonging to Malmo's gang scene.

Sydsvenskan reported that he was a suspect in several murders and bombings and had a bounty on his head.

GANG-RELATED KILLINGS ON THE RISE
Murders due to gang violence have increased this year, prompting political parties to make crime a key issue in next month's election campaign.

Police figures show that 44 people have been rubbed out so far this year, almost all of them linked to gang crime.

Police chief Stenkula admitted that Malmo, the country's third largest city, is in a "spiral of violence."

Following the latest shooting, the head of Sweden's Centre Party, Annie Loof, complained on Twitter about a "complete indifference to human life" by criminals.

In July, three people were killed in a shooting in a shopping mall in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, around 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Malmo.

Gunfire hits crowded Israeli bus in West Bank; IDF launches manhunt
[IsraelTimes] At least 8 bullets shot from Silwad hit a bus full of passengers on major highway; no injuries

An Israeli bus came under fire in the central West Bank on Saturday night, law enforcement said, clarifying that no one was injured in the incident.

The shots were fired from the Paleostinian town of Silwad at a bus traveling along Route 60, the West Bank’s main north-south highway, near the Ofra settlement, the IDF said in a statement.

The Egged Ta’avura bus was full at the time of the attack and at least eight bullet holes were found on the bus’s windows and body, according to the Binyamin Regional Council.

The driver continued until the nearby Shiloh junction where dispatched troops arrived and launched a manhunt for the shooter or shooters. Medics also rushed to the junction but ultimately were not called on to treat anyone.

As part of the search for the suspects, the army closed off the entrance to Silwad, according to Paleostinian media reports.

Binyamin Regional Council chairman Yisrael Gantz said the shooting was part of an ongoing escalation by Paleostinian button men and demonstrated a "loss of deterrence" on the part of Israeli authorities.

Earlier Saturday, three Paleostinian women from Nablus with a makeshift submachine gun in their car were arrested Saturday near a checkpoint in the West Bank.
Three Paleostinian women from Nablus with a makeshift submachine gun in their car were arrested Saturday near a checkpoint in the West Bank, the Defense Ministry said.

According to an initial investigation of the incident, the three women drove up to the Eliyahu Crossing, near Qalqilya, and stopped their car before the checkpoint, arousing the suspicion of security guards.

Guards searching their car found a makeshift "Carlo" submachine gun and an unclear note in the trunk. Some Hebrew media reports claimed the note was a suicide note, though this remained unconfirmed.

It was not immediately clear if the trio had actually planned to attack the checkpoint, or had sought to be arrested by Israeli authorities.

The three women did not have permits to enter Israel.

They were taken for further questioning by the Shin Bet security agency.

Israeli troops seize NIS 4 million of hashish near Egypt border
[IsraelTimes] IDF says some 100 kilograms of drug confiscated by soldiers after lookouts spotted vehicle suspected of involvement in smuggling

Israeli troops seized NIS 4 million
...about US$ 1million, last I looked...
worth of hashish in a drug bust near the Egyptian border, the military announced Saturday.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, military lookouts spotted a vehicle in the southern Yoav Regional Brigade that was suspected of attempting to smuggle drugs.

IDF troops and Border Police operating in the area later found bags containing some 100 kilograms of hashish, a haul the military estimated was worth NIS 4 million (over $1.2 million).

The IDF announced the arrest of a suspect later Saturday, after scouring the area.

Both the suspect and the drugs were handed over to police as part of the investigation.

The military has made several other drug seizures along Israel’s borders in recent months, including the July confiscation of some $2.5 million worth of cocaine and hashish that was smuggled into the country from Egypt.

Turkish-Backed SNA Shells Government Areas In Syria's Aleppo
[NPASYRIA] Ottoman Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), targeted on Friday night several military posts of Syrian government forces on frontlines in the city of al-Bab, in the eastern countryside of Aleppo Governorate.

Fierce festivities took place between the SNA and the government forces in several fronts.

Since 2017, the city of al-Bab in the eastern countryside of Aleppo has been under the control of the Ottoman Turkish-backed SNA factions.

Hours before, the government forces targeted a popular market in al-Bab with several missiles, killing 14 people and wounding 33 others, including serious injuries.

An opposition military source told North Press that Ottoman Turkish-backed Samarqand faction targeted posts of the government forces on Jabla al-Hamra front and the village of al-Hota, east of al-Bab.

The Ottoman Turkish-backed Sultan Murad faction also targeted the village of Radar Shaala, west of al-Bab, from which the government forces missiles were fired, according to the source.

This coincided with another targeting by other SNA factions of inhabited areas in the northern countryside of Aleppo, causing civilian casualties.

The source held the Syrian government forces responsible for "al-Bab massacre."

On the same day, the SNA-funded media accused the government forces and Syrian Democratic Force (SDF) of targeting the city.

Farhad Shami, director of the SDF Media Center denied the abovementioned accusation, stressing that their forces have nothing to do with bombing of al-Bab.

ISIS Reveals Operations' Outcome In Syria, World In A Week
[NPASYRIA] On Friday, the Islamic State

They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) announced it carried out six operations in Syria and seven others in Iraq last week.

According to ISIS-run newspaper al-Naba, the operations carried out in Syria were concentrated in Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa which targeted the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government forces in which eight people were killed.

On August 15, ISIS claimed that it targeted a vehicle of the SDF by an IED in the town of Sabha
...After the Libyan Civil War, Sabha grew in importance as a slave auctioning town. However, an investigation by the National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) revealed that while there was illegal slavery, reports were exaggerated, as slave auctions were rare and not made public. This was a great comfort to everyone but the slaves peddled in secret. The city was later seized by forces loyal to the Libyan National Army (LNA) and its leader Khalifa Haftar in January 2019, probably for its collection of MiG-25 aircraft....
in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

The Sabha attack followed a day when ISIS claimed an attack on a military base of the SDF in the town of Abu Hardoub in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

On August 10, ISIS grabbed credit for targeting a military vehicle in the village of Zerr in al-Busayrah town in which three fighters of the SDF bit the dust and a fourth was injured, according to the ISIS.

In Iraq, seven operations were carried out by ISIS leaving seven deaths of the Popular Mobilization Forces, (PMF) and the Iraqi army.

In addition, four military vehicles were destroyed and houses and military vehicles were set on fire, according to al-Naba.

ISIS sleeper cells carried out 29 operations all around the world leaving at least 50 deaths, according to ISIS.
