Mafia-style shooting at Chicago gas station caught on video as 3 suspects open fire in broad daylight
[Blaze] Three suspects shot and killed a man whom they also reportedly hit with a car at a gas station in Chicago in a brazen daytime shooting.

A small memorial was left by family members for 31-year-old Anton Benoit after he was shot and killed in a gang-style shooting at a Shell gas station in Chatham, a neighborhood in Chicago. Chatham is located on the south side and has a population of approximately 32,000.

Several different angles of the shooting were shown by ABC 7, and gas station surveillance video showed three men get out of a black Dodge Durango and empty their weapons toward Benoit. All three men got back into the vehicle and drove away.

Local outlet WGN9 said that in addition to the shooting, Benoit was also hit by the SUV.

The victim was seen at the first gas pump around 4:10 p.m. on July 26 and was shot several times before being taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Nekkid rapper found dead in barrel may be linked to Pop Smoke's murder: officials
[NYPOST] Authorities are investigating whether the man whose naked body was found stuffed in a barrel at a Florida beach was killed in retaliation for the 2020 murder of Brooklyn-born rapper Pop Smoke.

The victim, identified as Javonnta Murphy, a 32-year-old singer-songwriter from Sylmar, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, was killed with a gunshot to the head, according to an autopsy report.

His naked body was discovered inside a sealed 55-gallon drum floating in the water off Malibu Lagoon State Beach on July 31.

Murphy was the older brother of Jaquan Murphy, who was one of five suspects arrested in the February 2020 slaying of 20-year-old rapper Pop Smoke during a home-invasion robbery, reported TMZ.

Jaquan Murphy, then aged 21, was initially charged with attempted murder in the rapper’s killing but he was later cleared in that case.

Mystery as Florida diving team finds 32 cars submerged in a lake on their mission to solve 40 missing persons cold cases
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Divers in Florida have uncovered a total of 32 cars submerged in a lake that are expected to be linked to criminal cold cases.

Ken Fleming and Doug Bishop said that they stumbled upon the vehicles, which were most likely dumped during criminal activities, in their bid to help solve missing person cases in Doral, near Miami International Airport.

The volunteer divers are now working with Miami-Dade County to remove all the vehicles from the murky water near Northwest 87th Avenue and 13th Terrace - before they start to look into any potential cold cases connections.

Fleming told 7News: 'When we discover a spot like this with multiple vehicles, it pretty much indicates that a crime where they're disposing the vehicles and hiding them from law enforcement.'

The volunteers use sonar technology after doing their research on where clues on missing people cases might located.

He added: 'We have a giant database of our own that we extract.

'We have 40 that we're targeting right now of folks that disappeared, anywhere from two or three months ago to 30, 40 years ago.'

Collectively, the volunteer team have found 60 submerged vehicles across the US that are possibly linked to crimes.

Uvalde school shooter's cousin, 17, arrested after 'threatening to do the same thing' at a Texas school
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A teenage boy, who is the cousin of the Uvalde school shooter, has been arrested in Texas for allegedly threatening to shoot up an elementary school.

Nathan Cruz, 17, from San Antonio, was reported to authorities by his mother - who said he was planning to 'do the same thing' as his cousin, Salvador Ramos.

Ramos was the gunman who opened fire and killed 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary in 2022 - before using their innocent blood to etch heinous messages on whiteboards in the classrooms.

He was eventually killed by police after a litany of delays getting to him.

Teen suspect Cruz made the concerning statements to his sister and was also overheard trying to buy an AR-15 illegally, the arrest warrant seen by KSAT states

Jemele Hill spots racism in 'overzealous' reaction to Carlee Russell kidnap hoax: 'Do some critical thinking'
[NYPOST] "Overzealous" legal backlash over the Carlee Russell kidnapping hoax came only because a Black woman was at the center of it, The Atlantic writer Jemele Hill tweeted.

After it was found that Russell, a 24-year-old nursing student, had fabricated the story of her abduction, coppers filed two misdemeanor charges against the Alabama woman.

State politicians are also seeking to increase the penalties for faking a kidnapping.

Through her X (formerly known as Twitter) account, Hill called these efforts "overzealous" actions taken because of Russell’s race, claiming the same thing would not have happened if she was White.

"She’s already been charged and will likely have to pay restitution. Zero problem with that. What I’m saying is, this politician is being overzealous because the Black woman was at the center of this hoax. I promise you had she been a white woman, nobody would be introducing a law to strengthen the laws about lying to the cops," Hill wrote.

After facing pushback, Hill continued to argue that a White woman would not inspire new laws like Russell.

"Ok, I’ll play along, where the Susan Smith law in North Carolina? Where are the laws that strengthen lying to police when we have seen white women continually lie when they call the police on Black people for just existing in the spaces they don’t want us in? A white woman just lied in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, about being kidnapped by two Latino people and it turns out she’d spent 3 weeks with an old boyfriend ... where’s the new law?" she wrote.

Texas woman seriously injured after hawk drops snake on her
[BBC] A Texas woman was attacked by a hawk and a snake at the same time after the bird - which eats snakes - accidentally dropped the wriggling serpent on her.

Peggy Jones, 64, was mowing her lawn last month when a passing hawk dropped a snake on her before swooping down to angrily try to reclaim its meal.

The snake wrapped itself around her arm and began striking her face as the bird sunk its talons deep into her flesh.

The terrifying ordeal left her with cuts and bruising to her arm and face.

The bizarre incident took place on 25 July in the town of Silsbee, Texas, near the Louisiana border.

It began after a snake suddenly fell out of the sky and landed on her. Before she could remove it, the hawk attack began.

"As I was trying to sling my arm and sling the snake off, the snake wrapped around my arm," she told CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

"The snake was striking in my face, it struck my glasses a couple of times... I was slinging and slinging, he was striking and striking, and he just kept hanging on."

Women's World Cup: Fans proud of Morocco despite crashing out after loss to France
[AFRICANEWS] Morocco fans in Rabat were understandably subdued after their team were knocked out of the Women’s World Cup, following a 4-0 defeat to La Belle France on Tuesday.

After becoming the first Arab nation to advance to the knockout stage, the last 16 match against the team ranked number five in the world was a step too far for the Atlas Lionesses.

Eugenie Le Sommer scored twice as La Belle France advanced to the quarter-finals and ended Morocco's historic debut run at the tournament.

"As we know, the La Belle France women’s team is among the strongest participating in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, that in itself is an achievement for the Morocco soccer team. We are proud of them, because this is the first time the Morocco women’s soccer team has participated in the World Cup." says Ayoub, a Morocco fan in Rabat.

Touria, another fan described the Atlas Lionesses performance as inspiring. ".... it's a first, and it's very good, they are like an example for the maiden of tender yearss here in Morocco. It's inspiring, it means that we can become anything we want, even play football, whereas it's not been very long since football was considered a sport for men and today the girls are in Australia to participate in the World Cup, they arrived for the eighth final. Today they did not play very well, but it does not matter...."

Street in New York co-named 'Allama Iqbal Avenue'
[GEO.TV] As Pakistain's Independence Day fast approaches, an avenue in New York — the most populous city in the United States — has been co-named “Allama Iqbal Avenue".
That’s Sir Muhammad Iqbal to you, the national poet of Pakistan, who inspired the Pakistan Movement. I looked him up.
Ambassador Masood Khan has congratulated President American-Pak Advocacy Group Ali Rashid for his leadership in having the avenue co-named "Allama Iqbal Avenue".

Iqbal is an international icon
...those who know, know him. The rest of us have to resort to the internet or old Encyclopedia Brittanicas...
and a symbol of Pak nationhood. It was he who dreamed of a separate homeland for the Moslems of the Sub-continent — a dream which came true in 1947.

"New York is the most famous metropolis and naming an avenue after our national poet would cement Pak-US ties and a source of pride for Pak diaspora not only in NYC but across the United States," he said.
Worked so well for MLK.
He also paid tribute to Rashid for his resolute efforts to build better relations between Pakistain and the US, creating greater awareness about the history and culture of Pakistain in the US.

It may be recalled that Rashid and APAG were instrumental in introducing a resolution in the US House of Representatives to designate March 23, 2023, as "Pakistain Day."

‘My Conscience Is Clear': Former Policeman Convicted in Death of George Floyd Gets Nearly Five Years in Prison
[Breitbart] The final former Minneapolis, Minnesota, policeman convicted for his role in the May 2020 death of George Floyd was sentenced to more than four years in prison on Monday.

Tou Thao previously said his role in the incident was holding back people who gathered at the scene as former policeman Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck prior to his death, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

During sentencing, Thao said his intentions were not to hurt anyone when the incident occurred, and he also talked about how he had grown in his Christian faith while spending the past 340 days in jail.

“I did not commit these crimes. My conscience is clear. I will not be a Judas nor join a mob in self-preservation or betray my God,” he stated.

In May, Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill found the former officer guilty of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

On Monday, the judge said, “After three years of reflection, I was hoping for a little more remorse, regret, acknowledgment of some responsibility, and less preaching.”

“I’m not going to rehash all the facts from my order, which I found that the things you did and the things you didn’t do made you guilty of this crime,” the judge added:

Thao’s attorney, Robert Paule, is planning an appeal.

In 2020, Thao’s defense team argued the body camera footage recorded at the scene of Floyd’s death proved the now-former officer should not face charges in the case, ABC News reported.

The clip shows one bystander demanding the officers check Floyd’s pulse and tell her the results:
Video at the link.
In April, Chauvin’s appeal for another trial was rejected after he was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for Floyd’s murder, according to Breitbart News.

“Chauvin recently pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges, and his ex-wife also pleaded guilty to similar charges,” the outlet also said, adding the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that he would have to pay for his attorney when appealing his murder conviction and sentence.

Kai Cenat riot: NYPD smashes rioting kid's face through back window of taxi
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] This is the shocking moment NYPD cops smash a youngster's face through the back window of a cab at the Kai Cenat riots in New York City.

Crowds descended on Union Square on Friday after the Twitch streamer told his millions of fans he would give away free PlayStation 5s.

The ensuing riot saw cars destroyed as fights broke out among thousands of people gathered in downtown Manhattan.

In one video from the scene, a cop could be seen grabbing a teenager by the arms and slamming him against the back window of a taxi cab, smashing the glass.

Police then grabbed another man, who struggled as he was surrounded by cops who pinned him to the ground.

The NYPD told DailyMail.com it is 'aware of the video, and it is under internal review,' after Mayor Eric Adams suggested 'outside agitators' could have been to blame.

Cenat, 21, has been charged with inciting a riot and unlawful assembly after he announced a gaming giveaway along with fellow streamer Fanum scheduled for 4pm Friday.

He had promised to give out free PlayStation 5 consoles, computers, accessories and gift cards during the Twitch stream.

In his Twitch broadcast, Cenat told his 20million followers: 'We're making sure to have good like protection and s***. You already know, we're trying to chill and s***.

'All my New York n******, I f****** love you n****** to death,' he said. 'But ya'll n****** are wild. Ya'll n****** are animals, bro. Let's be real, bro. When you n****** get too lit, when there's too much going on, like, n****** start violating s***.

'That s*** might end really quick depending on how rowdy you get and s*** like that.'

He added: 'Now, look - it is a public area. So anything can happen, bro. Anything can happen.

'Make sure you pull up with somebody. Just make sure you pull up with a friend to make sure ya'll are good and s–t like that.

'New York is f***** insane, n—-r. But I need all my New York n****** out there. We're gonna go crazy, bro.'

He added that he picked Union Square because the event 'would get shut down ASAP' if it was held at a more crowded New York landmark such as Times Square.

Africa Subsaharan
Expelled from Senegal, Ousmane Sonko's lawyer Juan Branco returns to France
[AFRICANEWS] French-Spanish lawyer Juan Branco, deported on Monday from Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
where he was arrested and imprisoned for defending opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, arrived at Gay Paree' Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airport on Tuesday morning, raising his fist to the press but making no statement.

He arrived shortly before 9:00 a.m. and was greeted by members of his family and a few supporters, AFP journalists observed. "Juan Branco, you are our warrior", said a woman, filming and following him, as did a few others.

The lawyer raised his fist, but did not speak to the press. He got into a cab as soon as he left the airport.

Me Branco has been the target of a Senegalese judicial investigation since mid-July, and was arrested in Mauritania on Sunday after several days of searching. Handed over to the Senegalese authorities, who accuse him of having entered the country illegally, he was charged on Sunday with attack, conspiracy, spreading false news and acts and maneuvers likely to compromise public security or cause serious political unrest, according to his lawyers.

In Senegal, the Franco-Spanish lawyer is taking part in the defense of Ousmane Sonko, a Senegalese opponent engaged since 2021 in a tug-of-war with the authorities and the judiciary that has given rise to several episodes of deadly violence.

He attracted particular attention in June when he announced a complaint in La Belle France and asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague to open an investigation against President Macky Sall for "crimes against humanity", at a time when the country had just experienced its worst unrest in years.

"No lawyer should be hindered in his mission, wherever he is and whoever he is," had written on X (ex Twitter) the Gay Paree bâtonnière, Julie Couturier.

Niger coup: Wagner taking advantage of instability - Antony Blinken
[BBC] Russia's Wagner mercenary group is "taking advantage" of instability in Niger, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told the BBC.

The country has been ruled by a junta following the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum nearly two weeks ago.

There have been suggestions the coup leaders have asked for help from Wagner, which is known to be present in neighbouring Mali.

Mr Blinken said he did not think Russia or Wagner instigated Niger's coup.

However the US was worried about the group "possibly manifesting itself" in parts of the Sahel region, he told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme

"I think what happened, and what continues to happen in Niger was not instigated by Russia or by Wagner, but... they tried to take advantage of it.

"Every single place that this Wagner group has gone, death, destruction and exploitation have followed," said Mr Blinken.

"Insecurity has gone up, not down".

He added that there was a "repeat of what's happened in other countries, where they brought nothing but bad things in their wake".

Haitians march on Port-au-Prince by the thousands as gang violence fatigue boils over
Careful what you ask for.
[FoxNews] Haiti's residents awaiting potential deployment of UN-backed armed force to combat gang epidemic.

Several thousand people — their faces covered to conceal their identities — marched through Haiti’s capital on Monday demanding protection from violent gangs who are pillaging neighborhoods in the capital Port-au-Prince and beyond.

Haitians' daily lives have been disrupted by incessant gang violence that has worsened poverty across the country as it awaits a decision from the U.N. Security Council over a potential deployment of an international armed force.

"We want security!" the crowd chanted as it marched for two hours from the troubled community of Carrefour-Feuilles to Champ de Mars in the downtown area and then to the prime minister's official residence, where police broke up the demonstration with tear gas.

"I can’t work. I can’t go out. I’m like a prisoner in my own home," said Wilene Joseph, a 36-year-old street vendor and mother of two who joined the march out of frustration.

"I worry about my kids being shot because bullets are flying from all directions all the time," Joseph said of her children, ages 5 and 7. "The situation is unacceptable."

Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, experts say gangs have seized control of up to 80% of Port-au-Prince, killing, raping and sowing terror in communities already suffering endemic poverty.

From January to March, more than 1,600 people have been reported killed, injured or kidnapped, a nearly 30% increase compared with the last three months of 2022, according to the newest U.N. report.

On Monday, UNICEF announced an "alarming spike" in kidnappings, with nearly 300 confirmed cases so far this year, almost equaling the number reported for all of last year, and almost three times the total for 2021.

The agency noted that women and children are increasingly being kidnapped and used for financial or tactical gain. Among those kidnapped in late July was Alix Dorsainvil, a U.S. nurse from New Hampshire, and her young daughter. Dorsainvil works for El Roi Haiti, a Christian organization that offers medical care, education and other services. She and her daughter remain in the hands of their captors, who are demanding $1 million in ransom.

Parents of young children are particularly fearful that gangs will snatch them when they go to and from school. Nacheline Nore, 40, said her two boys, ages 10 and 8, have to call her every day as soon as they step inside their school, and she rides back home with them every afternoon: "You don’t know who’s going to be the next target," she said.

Mario Jenty, a 36-year-old cell phone vendor who joined Monday’s march, said the increase in kidnappings is pushing Haitians into even deeper poverty. "They’re going to have to sell that home to pay for ransom, and there’s a chance they might not be released," he said of the victims.

Jenty, who lives in Carrefour-Feuilles, said he would not allow gangs to take over his neighborhood. "I’m going to fight this," he said. "I’d rather die than leave my community."

Jenty joined the thousands of Haitians who yelled "Bwa kale!" on Monday as they marched, a reference to a violent uprising that began earlier this year, with civilians targeting suspected gang members. More than 200 people have been slain since then, and demonstrators vowed to keep the movement alive as gangs overwhelm Haiti’s understaffed and under resourced police department.

Last October, Haiti’s prime minister and other top-ranking officials requested the urgent deployment of an international armed force to help quell gang violence.

Newsom Funded Chinese COVID Lab Known To Biden's FDA
[Mark Pellin, Headline USA] The discovery last month of a Chinese COVID biolab in California shocked the nation, but likely came as no surprise to the state’s Democrat governor, Gavin Newsom.

He helped fund it.

The now-notorious secret facility, which contained a massive stockpile of "infectious agents," including coronavirus, and nearly a thousand dead lab mice and vials of unidentified biological fluids, also likely came as no surprise to the Biden administration.

The FDA last year issued a recall warning for nearly 54,000 COVID rapid tests manufactured by the company that owned the lab.

Fresno County officials discovered the "unlicensed laboratory" in a warehouse owned by Prestige Biotech, which has ties to multiple Chinese pharmaceutical firms and a president who lives in China and can only be reached by email.

The company’s CCP links extend to Barry Zhang, who is listed as Prestige BioTech’s registered agent by the Nevada secretary of state. Zhang reportedly was a leader of the Chinese-American Society of CPAs and its work with China’s United Front espionage and propaganda network.

The founder of the law firm representing Prestige BioTech, Michael M Lin, is reportedly "a regular sponsor of CCP’s United Front events in Nevada."

Purge of Top Military Leaders Reveals a Crisis Within CCP
[Epoch Times] Last week, Gen. Li Yuchao, commander of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Rocket Force, and political commissar Xu Zhongbo, the branch’s second in command, were purged from their posts after having disappeared from public view for months. The reason for their dismissal and their current whereabouts are unknown.
Any tall buildings around?
Nishakant Ojha, an India-based geopolitical analyst, said he believes the purge of the Rocket Force’s entire command is linked to a crackdown on corruption. "The Rocket Force may have failed to meet certain high-level goals," Mr. Ojha told The Epoch Times, adding that may have prompted an investigation into where the money went.

He Qinglian, a prominent U.S.-based Chinese economist and commentator, thinks the shake-up was the result of a leaking of military secrets that came to light when the U.S. Air Force think tank published a 255-page report on the PLA Rocket Force (pdf) on Oct. 24, 2022. The report described the organizational structure of the Rocket Force, a branch known for its secrecy, with a remarkable level of detail, prompting analysts including Ms. He to conclude it was leaked by senior officials of the force.

Ms. He said she’s reminded of previous incidents such as the 2010 purge, during which the CCP dismantled a CIA espionage operation inside China by executing or imprisoning dozens of informants over two years.

AI-Powered Gun Detection System
The article speaks of an AI run/controlled visual gun detection & situational awareness app that is layered with existing city digital security cameras.
The AI software picks up on what it believes to be a firearm and alerts police.

Now that AI has digital eyes to via public street cameras already spread around town.

I guess the old Gov. toe in the door question is.

How long before AI is used to track citizen movements and activities like is done in the CCP for "social credit" grading ?

[GovTech] ZeroEyes, creators of the only AI-based gun detection video analytics platform, recently announced that its platform has been deployed by the city of Hobbs, N.M., to protect citizens against gun-related threats.

The city chose ZeroEyes after closely evaluating the company's successful work with Hobbs Municipal School District, where the platform has been deployed for over a year. The City of Hobbs has a 60-month professional services contract for a subscription service with ZeroEyes. The subscription renews annually and the annual cost of the service is $22,500, an emal from Commications Director Meghan Mooney said.

Australian pedophile ring busted in wake of killings of 2 FBI agents
[FoxNews] FBI special agents killed in 2021 during investigation of U.S. suspect involved in criminal scheme

More than a dozen men have been charged with sex crimes in Australia in the wake of a U.S. FBI investigation that proved fatal for two agents.

Officials announced Tuesday that 19 men had been arrested and charged with a combined 138 offenses in connection to an international pedophile ring.

"We will allege that these men were members of a technologically sophisticated online child abuse network that was operating across the country," Australian Federal Police Commander Helen Schneider told news outlets.

"We are proud of our longstanding relationship with the Australian Federal Police resulting in 19 Australian men facing criminal prosecution as a result of our collaborative investigation," FBI Legal Attaché Nitiana Mann said.

Two of the suspects have already been convicted and sentenced, according to authorities.

Those convicted are set to serve approximately 15 years in the Australian Capital Territory and five years in New South Wales.

Thirteen children were rescued in the operation, but the circumstances of the victims have not been made public.

FBI Special Agents Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger were killed in 2021 while attempting to execute a search warrant for child pornography in Florida.

Suspect David Lee Huber, 55, fired a rifle through the door and killed the pair of agents, wounding three others. He then turned the gun on himself.

Mann went on to highlight the value of close cooperation between nations and law enforcement, including the FBI: "The complexity and anonymity of these platforms means that no agency or country can fight these threats alone. As we continue to build bridges through collaboration and teamwork, we can ensure the good guys win and the bad guys lose."

UPS drivers set to receive modest pay raise
[BBC] Shipping giant UPS has warned its profits will be lower than planned this year, in part reflecting the pay increases it agreed to grant US workers in a labour deal last month.

UPS said the average full-time driver would earn about $170,000 (£135,000) annually, including healthcare and other benefits, by the end of the five-year contract.

That is up from about $145,000 now.

The raises follow the most serious bout of inflation in the US in 40 years.

Overall prices rose 3% over the 12 months to June, after leaping more than 9% in the prior year.

As rising living costs strain household budgets, labour tensions have boiled over, leading to unionisation campaigns at Starbucks and other companies, and strikes across the country.

The threat of a strike by the Teamsters union hit UPS in recent weeks, as customers diverted about one million packages per day to rival companies, costing the company about $200m in sales.

In a call to update investors on Tuesday, UPS said the deal reached with the Teamsters - expected to be approved by workers in a vote this month - would also weigh on its profits.

Electric vehicle firm championed by Biden files for bankruptcy in black eye for green agenda
[Just The News] Proterra, the electric vehicle company championed by President Joe Biden, has filed for bankruptcy in a move that delivers a black eye to the administration's green and economic agendas.

The announcement late Monday came as the president is touring the country trying to convince voters his Bidenomics agenda is working, a claim polling shows is not being accepted by voters. Proterra cited the economy as part of the reason for its collapse.

"We have faced various market and macroeconomic headwinds that have impacted our ability to efficiently scale," CEO Gareth Joyce said in a statement.

The company submitted documents for Chapter 11 protection in Delaware but says it will continue business as usual, including fulfilling employee salaries and benefits, as it navigates bankruptcy proceedings.

The firm most famously assembles electric buses out of its South Carolina facility, where Biden received a virtual tour in 2021. In February, the president also announced CEO Joyce's appointment to the White House's Export Council, which advises on matters of overseas trade.

Joyce's appointment was celebrated by the Biden administration, who hailed the CEO for "growing Proterra’s EV battery manufacturing footprint in the United States and accelerating the transition of transit and other commercial vehicles to zero emission solutions."

#4  Jennifer M. Granholm and several other Biden administration oficials had stock in Protera. They all sold their stocks just before it went belly up. This was nothing more than a government funded scam to enrich them. Several of the busses caught fire, the ones in Alaska wouldn't run in the cold, they would lose power in the heat. I want to know where all the money went. After the NYSE bell rang Monday evening, Proterra quietly and voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, declaring its assets and liabilities somewhere in the range of $500 million to $1 billion.

#5  In February, the Democrats appointed Proterra CEO Gareth Joyce to serve on the President's Export Council, which provides advice on international trade. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, meanwhile, held 240,000 shares in the company at the start of her tenure, prompting ethics concerns.

While Proterra shares tumbled more than 60 percent in after-hours trading Monday, Granholm will not have to worry about losing her investment. Granholm, who served on Proterra's board of directors, sold the shares for $1.6 million in May 2021, weeks after Biden publicly touted the company. Granholm's shares would be valued at just $340,000 based on Proterra's current share price.

Weight loss drug Wegovy decreases heart attacks and strokes
[Washington Examiner] A worldwide study published on Tuesday found that the weight loss drug Wegovy has significant benefits for heart health, reducing heart attacks and stroke incidents by 20%.

"People living with obesity have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but to date, there are no approved weight management medications proven to deliver effective weight management while also reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death," said Martin Holst Lange, executive vice president for development at Novo Nordisk, the maker of semaglutide, found in Wegovy and the Type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic.

The SELECT study started in 2018 and examined over 17,000 patients over the age of 45 from 41 countries. Researchers measured three primary adverse outcomes — cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal strokes — all of which were reduced in patients taking Wegovy.

Both of Novo Nordisk's semaglutide products have become widely popular as social media influencers have touted their effects. High out-of-pocket costs and product shortages for Wegovy and Ozempic have made it difficult to obtain the drugs.

The Danish pharmaceutical company has also come under investigation in recent weeks in connection to semaglutide's adverse side effects, including in relation to thoughts of self-harm and suicide in patients. A Louisiana woman is also suing Novo Nordisk and rival weight loss drug manufacturer Eli Lilly for gastrointestinal distress caused by their diabetes management products.

Novo Nordisk previously told the Washington Examiner that patient safety is its top priority and that the company is taking all claims very seriously.

Several medical financial analysts commented on Tuesday's study, saying its findings will change the practice of obesity medicine and its corresponding insurance coverage.

"We see this as a pivotal result which has the potential to substantially change the obesity treatment paradigm, not only increasing patient stay-time on the drug (potentially even doubling the stay time of the drug to 24 months) but also revolutionizing physician attitudes to treating obesity early, which could increase the penetration of obesity treatment and particularly Wegovy," Richard Vosser of JPMorgan told Reuters.

Terence McManus of Bellevue Asset Management also said Wegovy's preventive care benefits would be significant for the healthcare system as a whole.

Over 170 cars catch fire in two months due to low-quality petrol in Erbil
Something to consider other than lithium batteries.
[Rudaw] At least three vehicles caught fire in the Kurdistan Region capital city Erbil on Monday alone as a result of low-quality gasoline, coupled with scorching temperatures.

Sangar Fathulla, the owner of one of the vehicles that caught fire on Erbil's newly built 150-meter ring road blamed low-quality gasoline for the massive financial loss that he saw.

"I refilled my vehicle on Erbil's 60-meter road for 650 dinars. When I arrived there, I noticed that my vehicle was malfunctioning, and all of a sudden I heard a noise and I saw fire billowing from my car. The place was so empty. No one came to my aid. Yet, I did not have any fire extinguisher in my car."

Fathulla's vehicle was an old-model German Volkswagen Passat that he had bought for $6,000. The fire completely destroyed his vehicle and he sold the metals for $200.

According to data from Erbil's Civil Defense Department, in the course of the past two summer months, 171 vehicles caught fire and were completely destroyed across the Erbil province.

"The key factor is low-quality gasoline... The second factor is modifications when they [drivers] make to the electrical system of their vehicles including installing Ipad and decorations that they add. These factors all lead to fires," said Sarkawt Karash, spokesperson of the Erbil Civil Defense Department.

One governmental and three trade petrol types are sold in the Kurdistan Region with their lowest octane level set at 89, according to regulations issued by relevant authorities of the KRG.

"When petrol prices go up, fraud increases and their qualities are tampered with. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
our committees continue monitoring those gas stations that sell low-quality gasoline. We will close them down and reveal their names to the public," Omed Khoshnaw, Erbil governor, told Rudaw.

None of the three vehicles that caught fire on Monday resulted in human losses.

RETRO: Combining interventions to reduce the spread of viral misinformation
[Nature] ABSTRACT
Misinformation online poses a range of threats, from subverting democratic processes to undermining public health measures. Proposed solutions range from encouraging more selective sharing by individuals to removing false content and accounts that create or promote it. Here we provide a framework to evaluate interventions aimed at reducing viral misinformation online both in isolation and when used in combination. We begin by deriving a generative model of viral misinformation spread, inspired by research on infectious disease. By applying this model to a large corpus (10.5 million tweets) of misinformation events that occurred during the 2020 US election, we reveal that commonly proposed interventions are unlikely to be effective in isolation. However, our framework demonstrates that a combined approach can achieve a substantial reduction in the prevalence of misinformation. Our results highlight a practical path forward as misinformation online continues to threaten vaccination efforts, equity and democratic processes around the globe.
