On Monday, Michelle Obama took the stage at the annual Bits & Pretzels Founder Festival in Munchen for a one-on-one conversation with tech venture capitalist Karim Jalbout.

The pair discussed a variety of topics, though the main focus was promoting self confidence, as well as diversity and inclusion.
It has since been revealed that the former first lady was paid nearly $750,000 for the speaking engagement, which lasted only an hour.
According to the Daily Mail, sources close to the festival's organizers said Mrs. Obama's rate was "one of the highest fees that they ever have paid," adding, "they really pulled out all the stops to get her."
On its website, Bits & Pretzels claimed that Mrs Obama has been the most requested guest, having "topped the list year after year."
"We strongly believe in our mission of helping founders to shape a better future," festival organizers wrote, "and Michelle Obama's story of determination, community, and personal conviction is nothing short of inspiring."
"Drawing on her experiences as an accomplished attorney, bestselling author, Grammy winner, loving wife and mother, and former First Lady of the United States," they continued, "Mrs. Obama will encourage the audience to embrace their unique strengths and push past self-doubt while discussing the importance of inclusivity and diversity."
She and Jalbout were the keynote event on the festival's second day, occupying the 6 pm - 7 pm slot.
Other notable speakers at the Oktoberfest-adjacent event include AirBnB founder Nathan Blecharczyk, German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck, and former football legend turned entrepreneur Oliver Kahn.
Michelle is not the first Obama to take the stage at the festival. In 2019, her husband Barack was invited to speak about leadership and how those in power can tackle the biggest problems facing the world.
Since leaving office, the pair have done well for themselves financially, netting book deals and TV specials worth millions, as well as countless speaking engagements.

I don’t think Biden was ever paid to speak to people. His U Penn paycheck sounded like it was absentee. His inclusivity speeches would have been legendary, full of Corn Pop, Pony Soldiers, and stolen valor from the Civil Rights Movement. No way anyone would trust him to make a speech that didn’t result in litigation and a catatonic audience.

IIRC, Bill Clinton used to rake in quite a lot of money for speaking engagements. I don't know that he ever got $750,000 but I suppose inflation could account for the difference.
But then, who could tolerate listening to Joe Biden stuttering and stammering for a whole hour?

The laws were some of nearly two dozen gun control measures Newsom signed on Tuesday. But he acknowledged many of these laws might not survive legal challenges now that the U.S. Supreme Court has imposed a new standard on interpreting the nation’s gun laws. Just last week, a federal judge struck down a California law banning guns with detachable magazines that carry more than 10 rounds — one of three major pending cases challenging California’s gun restrictions.

NOTE: If using BBQ Charcoal (I do) make sure its 100% and not the type that has lighter fuel already added. It the fuel seems to affect combustion PSI and shelf life.
I have also found using a small coffee grinder for the broken up small charcoal pieces makes a good dust powder for fireworks.

The money off-set in General Fund expenditures has been a trick of the CA Department of Finance for decades. Whatever "Cause de Jour" gets new taxes, is always a net revenue increase for the state, but they merely offset what they were already spending for the particular topic or some allied expenditure and move the offset to the general fund for other uses.

"Yesterday around 8 p.m., a Secret Service Uniformed Division police officer came in contact with a first family pet and was bitten. The officer was treated by medical personnel on complex," USSS chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi told CNN in a statement.
