Bill Maher urges Biden to dump Kamala Harris for Nikki Haley to form 'dream unity ticket' for 2024
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Bill Maher has suggested President Joe Biden consider replacing his current Vice President Kamala Harris with either Nikki Haley or Republican Senator Mitt Romney in a bid to bridge the divide between the political parties.
Sometimes Mr. Maher gets it. Sometimes he most emphatically does not.
Maher suggested that if Biden were to pursue such an unconventional idea, it would likely result in electoral victory for the Democrats as the GOP members would be running on a unity ticket.

'I know it's crazy to think that she could run with Biden, but that's my dream, a unity ticket. And then he would, I think, definitely win,' Maher suggested.

Maher, speaking during a panel conversation on HBO's Real Time, acknowledged that the scenario was extremely unlikely with Harris almost certain to be Biden's running mate.

The problem with moving Kamalah out of the way is you are denying an black woman her chance to be President. Seriously bad optics there for the Dems.

#9  It might be considered a victory of sorts if Nikki Haley came out of the closet and admitted that she's really a Democrat. The logic for the Democrats is obvious. They wouldn't mind invoking the 25th Amendment if it was Haley who would then take the reins instead of Harris.

Donald Trump Rocks UFC Fight, Crowd Goes Wild
[Breitbart] Former President Donald Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee for president in 2024, appeared at the UFC fight on Saturday night at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, where a sold-out crowd went wild as he entered the stadium.

As Trump walked in alongside UFC’s chief Dana White, the UFC event organizers gave him walk-in music and the crowd went wild:

Trump has regularly appeared at UFC events in recent years and is an avid fan of the sport.

Earlier in the day, Trump rallied with supporters in Georgia–competing with Democrat President Joe Biden, who was also campaigning in the state. Trump’s event drew thousands, while Biden’s crowd was minimal.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Biden’s Atlanta event only drew “dozens.” Meanwhile, in Rome, Georgia, Trump–according to the Northwest Georgia News–drew thousands.

Contract losses have defense contractors saying no to Pentagon, their biggest customer
[JustTheNews] Department of Defense uses what are called cost-plus contracts to develop new weapons systems.

As the Pentagon looks to shift the risk of cost overruns to contractors, some are sitting on the sidelines instead of bidding on projects from their best client: the U.S. Defense Department.

The hesitancy comes in the wake of several high-profile contract losses.

Northrop Grumman Corp. took a $1.56 billion pre-tax loss in January on the B-21 Raider program. The company bid on the U.S. Air Force project in 2015, before the pandemic, inflation and supply chain issues, which have led to cost overruns that the company has to eat under the terms of its contract.

"We have passed on some high-profile programs," Northrop Grumman Chief Executive Kathy Warden said on an investor call earlier this year.

Boeing lost $7 billion after winning a fixed-price development program for the U.S. Air Force's next-generation tanker, the KC-46. The contract was firm-fixed-price, meaning Boeing was on the hook if costs ran higher than expected. The total value of the contract was $4.9 billion.

Since then, Boeing has said it won't enter into new fixed-price contracts for the development stage of weapons citing unpredictability in designing and testing a new product.

At first, the KC-46 contract seemed relatively straight forward. The U.S. Air Force needed a new tanker to refuel planes in midair. The Air Force used a fixed-price incentive development contract "because KC-46 development was considered to be a relatively low-risk effort to integrate mostly mature military technologies onto an aircraft designed for commercial use. The contract limits the government’s financial liability and provides the contractor incentives to reduce costs to earn more profit," according to a 2022 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The Department of Defense uses what are called cost-plus contracts to develop new weapons systems. Companies earn a fixed profit while the government covers unexpected expenses. Once the Pentagon knows what it wants and the weapon is developed, it switches to fixed-price deals. In fixed-price deals, the parties agree on a price and the contractor is on the hook if costs run higher.

In the KC-46 contract, problems with the planes and their components have led to delays. Among the problems were issues that relate to the aircraft's remote vision system. The system's cameras and display allow operators to see and reposition the boom – a rigid telescope that delivers fuel to the receiver aircraft. But issues with the system along with other problems made the project more complex.

"Despite delays, the government's financial risk has generally been limited to the ceiling price of its contract with Boeing," according to that 2022 GAO report.

That's good news for taxpayers, but Boeing wasn't pleased. Boeing Chief Financial Officer Brian West said in October 2023: "Rest assured, we haven’t signed any fixed-price development contracts nor (do we) intend to."

The U.S. Government Accountability Office, which serves as the investigative arm of Congress, often recommends fixed-price contracts.

"Our prior work has shown that fixed-priced contracts are beneficial because the government generally pays a set price and the contractor generally assumes the risk and responsibility for any cost overruns," according to a 2023 Government Accountability Office report.

L3Harris Technologies, a defense contractor with 50,000 employees, told investors last year that it passed on some Pentagon contracts that it would have otherwise pursued.

"It's very hard to commit to a fixed price development program when you don't know the spec," L3Harris Technologies CEO Chris Kubasik said in a 2023 earnings call. "I think we all look back at all the write-offs and losses and more times than not they're tied to that. So we will not be playing that game."

Kubasik said that over time he expected others to get out of the game as well.

"We're not going to bid," he said. "And I would think over time others aren't going to bid. And ultimately we'll go back to the appropriate contracting vehicle for the appropriate opportunity."
Economics is the dismal science because it works.

#1  Soon you'll end up with only foreign suppliers as the number of companies that could build these type of things has shrunk since Vietnam from many to one or two. Foreign countries will absorb some overrun costs as a trade off to keep their shops and people working.

Has Haiti been taken over by cannibals? UPDATE: PM Ariel Henry resigns
[American Thinker] On Joe Biden's watch, Haiti has fallen into complete chaos, costing the U.S. another embassy.

The government is not functioning at all and barbarians have taken over.

The New York Post reports that it's come to this:

Haiti’s most notorious gang leader, known as "Barbecue," may be the most powerful man in the nation as the prime minister remains unable to return home.

On Sunday, the US announced that troops had evacuated Americans from the US Embassy and additional forces were brought in to secure the diplomatic compound in Port-au-Prince.

Jimmy Chérizier, leader of the notorious "G9 and Family" gang, is in command of the bulk of the gunmen stirring anarchy in the capital — and he vowed to fight until embattled Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigns.

"I am ready to make an alliance with the devil, ready to sleep in the same bed as the devil," Chérizier told his supporters last week as his fighters destroyed police stations and other government facilities.

It's part of a trend of nations in our hemisphere falling into extreme states of chaos from newly empowered gangs, all of them made rich from shipping illegal migrants into the U.S. and made muscular with new manpower from major prison breaks preceding the armed takeover attacks.

We've seen it in northern Mexico, we've seen it in Ecuador.

In Venezuela and Nicaragua something comparable is happening, except that the worst has already happened: The gangsters are the government, not challengers to the government. But the chaos is also there and these government gangs are growing rich off shipping illegal migrants to the states and emptying their prisons, too.

Now it's going full blown 'horrible' in Haiti, which has been a major transshipment point of illegal migrants into the states (and closely aligned with Nicaragua's game described here) and now has seen at least two major prison breaks in the runup to this disaster.

Videos have been circulating on Twitter and other places demonstrating that Haitian gangs are eating people as cannibals. One video, since deleted, showed someone swiftly macheting a leg off at the knee in a burning tire fire in a street like a piece of meat. Another video (also deleted) showed some savage chewing on someone's finger and then ripping a chunk off some burning corpse's leg in the street, encircled by burning tires, and then chowing down again. I saw these videos and they were both repulsive.

According to the Hindustan Times, the cannibalism did happen in Haiti's Artibonite Valley near its Dominican border, but the video is two years old.

"In February 2023, construction was started on a border wall that will cover 164 kilometers (102 miles) of the 392-kilometer (244 miles) border with Haiti.[21][22] The 3.9 meters (12.8 feet) high wall is 20-centimeter-thick concrete topped by a metal mesh, and contains fiber optics for communications, movement sensors, cameras, radars and drones.[21][23] The project includes 70 watchtowers and 41 access gates for patrolling.[21] This $32 million project will be the second longest border wall in the Americas, after the US-Mexico wall.[22] ... as a measure to reduce irregular migration from Haiti and smuggling.[24][21] The idea is supported by the majority of the Dominican population.[25] Dominican officials claim the wall will slow the illegal drug trade and reduce the chance of gang violence in Haiti from spreading to the Dominican Republic"

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia is trying to prevent a major war in Europe
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Evgeniy Balakin

[RIA] Almost simultaneously, two significant events took place from a geopolitical point of view: on March 6, a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Evgenia Gutsul (the head of Gagauzia) took place, and on March 7, a press conference between the head of France, Emmanuel Macron, and the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu. Hutsul asked the Russian President for protection from the “lawless actions” of the Moldovan authorities, and Macron promised these same authorities to strengthen military and economic cooperation.

It is no coincidence that Moldova was chosen as a “battlefield” for two continental powers. Geopolitically, this is a frontier zone, that is, a flexible transition from Russian to European civilization. Therefore, the ethnic composition of the state is varied, and political preferences are contradictory.

Gagauzia is an autonomy within Moldova, it arose with the help of Russia back in the imperial period and is traditionally oriented towards our country. Thus, during the collapse of the USSR, the autonomy spoke out in favor of preserving the Union, and in 2014 a plebiscite was held, as a result of which 98 percent of voters supported entry into the Customs Union and the “deferred status of autonomy”, which gives Gagauzia the right to secede from the Republic of Moldova if it loses independence.

It is not surprising that the Chisinau authorities did not recognize the results of the people's will. Flirting with “multi-vector” is a typical feature of frontier states. But with the arrival of Maia Sandu in 2020, the scales began to tip in the opposite direction. Sandu, who rose to power with the support of the notorious Soros, decided to impose the “European choice” on the entire state. In the case of Moldova, we are simply talking about its absorption by Romania, whose citizenship, by an incredible coincidence, Maia Sandu herself also has.

Do you believe in such coincidences? And what is this, if not the same case of “loss of independence” that the residents of Gagauzia feared?

The laws of geopolitics are immutable. If a frontier state tries to make a “final choice” in favor of one of the poles, it inevitably loses its political independence. Yes, there are many people in Moldova who want to become part of Europe. But there are also those who are ready to prevent this at any cost. It is hardly a coincidence that the governor of Gagauzia asks for help from Moscow at the same time when Transnistria, a semi-recognized autonomy within the same Republic of Moldova, is doing the same. And if the population of Gagauzia is approximately 130,000 people (most of them are Orthodox Turks - Gagauz, who feel their connection with our country), then more than 520,000 live in Transnistria, of which 220,000 have Russian citizenship.

Think about it: a quarter of Moldova's 2.6 million citizens favor close ties with Russia. If you try to force them into the “family of European nations,” what will be left of the country?

We have completely forgotten about Monsieur Macron, possessed by the spirit of the warlike Gauls. It is unlikely that he entered into a bilateral defense agreement with Chisinau out of love for democracy. What motivated him? Revenge multiplied by geopolitics.

In recent years, Russia has brought the project of “French Africa” (read: colonies) to the brink of existence. Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger are just some of the countries that found the French military and diplomatic presence burdensome: their place was taken by specialists from Russia. Deprived of African uranium reserves (the basis of French energy is nuclear energy), Paris is finally losing the opportunity to take a place among the great powers.

Hence France's persistent interest in Kazakhstan, which accounts for 45 percent of the production of much-needed uranium. Macron also promised “military support” for Armenia, which, taking into account the agreement with Moldova, reveals precisely the geopolitical background of his actions (albeit inspired by resentment).

Having once acted as a “peacemaker,” the current head of France is now the most vehement in Europe (under the guise of rhetorical questioning) for the introduction of troops into the lands of the former Ukraine (eclipsing even Poland with his madness ). Of course, “if the front moves towards Odessa or Kiev” - but those with eyes will see that it is in that direction that the front is moving.

Odessa is the main trophy of the conflict in Ukraine. Owning it means owning the Northern Black Sea region. For Russia, this is a guarantee of the security of the fleet, control over the lion's share of world grain production and cutting off the former Ukraine from the sea (which will lead to the inevitable collapse of the Kyiv regime). Therefore (suddenly) the head of Gagauzia is received at such a high level. Therefore, (suddenly) Transnistria, located one throw away from Odessa, where Russian military forces are stationed, raises its voice.

Do you believe in such coincidences? What is this if not a hint at the possible consequences of sudden and rash steps concerning Russian geopolitical interests?

Maia Sandu's interest is clear: to win elections with a rating of just over 20 percent. Inspired by the example of Zelensky, they can be completely abolished. With her obsession with European integration, there will be a convenient excuse to introduce martial law. Macron’s interest is more “sublime”: to fulfill the long-standing dream of the French rulers, dating back to the 18th century, to control the Northern Black Sea region.

The trouble is that for all three centuries, France defended the interests of Great Britain in this matter, trying, imitating the latter, to play the role of a maritime power. Hence the craving for overseas colonies and control over the straits and ports: a craving, as history has repeatedly shown, is destructive for France. Alas, no one can explain to Monsieur Macron the true interests of his country - the school of geopolitics in France has not developed.

The actions of the Russian leadership show that they are well aware of one of the main laws of geopolitics: only the maritime powers benefit from a major war on the continent. Politicians like Macron are seeking to fan the flames of the Ukrainian conflict throughout Europe. The USA and Great Britain are warming their hands from its heat. Russia is trying to prevent a big war.

Otherwise, all we have to do is win it.

#12  Oh yes, Putin's feelings. What is happening here?

I don't care about Putin's feelings but I can tell you what is happening. It's very simple and if it wasn't for all the liars in the media, everybody could see it.

NATO is attempting to take Ukraine at gunpoint and Russia is resisting. It's called war. People are dying. Even though Putin has expressed his willingness, Biden and Zelensky are steadfast in their refusal to negotiate. They still think they can win and they don't care how many people die or how much it costs. They do not care about the risks of escalation.

If Putin attacked Lithuania, Poland or Germany I would be on your side. But that is NOT what is "happening here".

You think NATO could waltz into Ukraine and kick the Russians out? You don't think Putin has reserves ready and waiting for you? Go for it. Just don't come crying to me when you get your ass blown off. And don't ask me to pay for it.

Again, why? There is little value to the west other than denying Russia a port... but Lord knows Ukraine is doing that work with their drones.

As for the Kerch bridge, it is a major supply line so hell yeah they are looking to destroy it. I would. The only other option is across rough and damaged roads in a war zone.

Evangelical Group to Spend $62 Million on Trump's Re-Election Bid
[PJ] Having been raised in a mainline Protestant denomination, I spent years watching very clumsy combinations of church and state. For me, abortion and the Gospel were presented as practically synonymous at times, and even now, when I have the guts to look up my old church online, I see photos of the present congregation turning out for Pride and pro-abortion events.

You see, the Left is not concerned about the mingling of church and state as it is the church and the cause. If the right kinds of churches support the right causes, there is nothing to see here, and you should move on. But I doubt the Left will be so dismissive of Ralph Reed and the organization Faith and Freedom.

Politico notes that the group has budgeted $62 million to get evangelicals to the polls for the 2024 election. Efforts will include voter registration, texts, calls, door-knocking, and handing out literature at an estimated 125,000 churches. In 2020, Faith and Freedom spent approximately $52 million. The operation should be working at full steam sometime in mid-July. To Reed's knowledge, it is the largest such effort ever undertaken, with some 10,000 staffers and volunteers hitting the streets. Or pews. Faith and Freedom will handle the lion's share of the work as it is a 501(c)(4) organization. The balance would be taken up by Americans of Faith, which operates under 501(c)(3) status. Neither type of group can directly advocate for a specific candidate, but a 501(c)(4) operates under fewer restrictions.

Democrats traditionally outspend Republicans during campaigns, and Trump's continued legal woes threaten to leave him extremely short on funds. Reed is not unmindful of this and told Politico, "In this business, you’re paid to worry, and we certainly have seen in recent cycles — particularly in the statewide races and especially the Senate races — we’ve seen the spending gap become overwhelming, serious and debilitating."

This is the nightmare scenario about which Rob Reiner's "God and Country" warned people. At last check, the offering had a dismal performance at the box office since most Americans are not convinced that Christians have a secret plan to enforce toxic masculinity while making sure women stay in the kitchen in their third trimester, staring at a pot of stew and wondering where their shoes went. One of the film's premises is that there is a vast and well-funded network lurking in the shadows that funnels money to activists so they can chain an unsuspecting nation to a cross. Faith and Freedom will set up the perfect opportunity for the filmmakers and their supporters to say, "See? We told you so!" Probably in the same hushed and intellectual tones used in the film to convince the viewer that some sort of Evangelical Christian Doom Squad is crouching just around the corner, ready to baptize unsuspecting people with a firehose, tie them up in an AWANA vest, and force them to vote Republican.

But Reed's efforts are targeted at mobilizing evangelicals who have likely not seen the movie and who have probably made up their minds at this point. The lines have been drawn, and the only thing left, barring a surprise announcement at the DNC convention, is to wait and see what happens on election night.

On the other hand, Faith and Freedom may have its work cut out for it in certain sectors. The Post Modern movement in the church made some significant inroads during its day, and the younger generations of evangelicals, navigating the maze of CRT, LGBTQ, and abortion, are also susceptible to left-wing ideas. In some cases they may sympathize with those causes. And, as Megan Basham has pointed out, progressive groups have invested time and money in infiltrating churches.

On a related note, on March 3, none other than Merrick Garland took center stage at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Selma, Alabama, to commemorate Bloody Sunday. Garland talked about the DOJ's Election Threats task force. You can read Garland's speech here.

I'm no fan of bringing politics to the pulpit, even if I happen to agree with the politics in question. And if the Left wants to keep it that way, fine. They can go first.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
So, a Pier for Hamas it is
[CDR Salamander] A lot of people spent the weekend scratching their heads over this;
The U.S. military will build a temporary port on Gaza's Mediterranean coast to receive humanitarian aid by sea, President Joe Biden said in his State of the Union speech on Thursday.

Planning for the operation, initially based on the island of Cyprus, does not envision deployment of U.S. military personnel in Gaza.

Biden's announcement came as he seeks to cool anger among many in his Democratic Party over his support for Israel in its offensive in Gaza since Oct. 7, given the steep toll on civilians in the Palestinian enclave.
Whole lot more at the link
Israel has destroyed Hamas building projects before. And unpermitted EU building projects in the West Bank.

#2  It will take a few weeks to make the transit from Virginia to the eastern Mediterranean. The 37-year old Besson can’t even break 12-knots fully loaded.

[shrieks] Ahhhhh! A few weeks? Too little! Too late! Go faster!

#5  This post from CTH this morning comes from a guy whose credentials sound like he is an expert.

"First of all, please know that I have a ton of lifetime experience with expeditionary military logistics, in terms of establishing lodgments as part of 82nd Airborne operations, establishing sea ports of debarkation for moving heavy US equipment into areas of operations and linking them up with their soldiers, and working with the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) through various operations (although I never served in that unit directly). I rarely call myself an expert on anything, but I am an expert on Army and Joint expeditionary logistics, so I speak here with some authority."

"Despite their incredible skill at building floating ports and bringing supplies ashore, they lack the organic capability to defend themselves against high intensity attacks by enemies. They need and rely on external security elements, both in the form of Navy or Coast Guard patrol boats, but also in the form of ground combat arms forces (Army or USMC) securing the beachhead across which supplies will be delivered....

The port that 7th Trans will develop has a doctrinal name: Joint Logistics Over the Shore, or “JLOTS.” JLOTS has its own doctrinal publication for all services, called Joint Publication 4-01.6, the cover of which is shown below.
3. JLOTS potentially brings all of the military services into play depending on the scenario. Joint Pub 4-01.6 does a good job of highlighting each service’s role, and if you are really interested in this, the pub is available online.
4. Alarmingly, the news coming out of the White House and the Pentagon suggests that no U.S. beach security will be present. Today, the Pentagon Press Spokesman, USAF Maj. Gen. Patrick S. Ryder, stated that the current U.S. plan will "avoid U.S. forces from having to be on the coast” and that "partners will be on the shore to receive the causeway and anchor it.”
5. Having read that, I want to point out a section of Joint Pub: 4-01.6, from Appendix J, Section 3: "Beach Security: The provision and execution of beach area security is completely scenario-dependent. In the early post-assault phase of an amphibious operation, security of the beach reception area may be carried out by air, ground, and naval combat forces. At the other end of the spectrum, as would normally be expected in a JLOTS operation, security in a nonhostile overseas environment may be provided largely by the host nation.”

"IMO, the only way to do this AND protect American lives is to deploy an Army or USMC infantry battalion task force to secure the beachhead, equipped with robust air defense, military intelligence, indirect fire, combat engineer and medical capabilities. Anything less puts American lives at grossly unnecessary risk, but POTUS won’t do this as he needs to pretend there are “no boots on the ground.”"

"
-Biden is doing this solely to win 100,000 Muslim votes in Michigan, and the troops are purely political pawns in this wretched game. This is despicable.
-The idea of minimizing combat unit footprint for political reasons in what is ostensibly a “humanitarian aid” mission is exactly what happened in Somalia, with disastrous results.
-7th Trans is a unique, one-of-a-kind, strategic combat capability of the U.S. military. Why are we squandering this essential unit in a mission that does nothing to promote U.S. national security? "

"
I encourage you to call your Senator or Congressperson and tell them you are against spilling more American blood in this hapless, witless, half-brained, purely political boondoggle, and offer the solutions (a) or (b) above.

Thank you."

#7  Thanks for sharing NoMo. I suspect your Michigan voter assessment is painfully spot on. The worthless SOB really needs the Michigan hajji vote.

It will be interesting to see if Israel permits the harbor to be built.

#9  Well, just remember all the officers involved that didn't resign/retire in objection to this. Could make a nice list for early release if Trump gets a second chance. To be preceded by the closure of the entire Middle East section of the State Department.

#11  /\ Excellent point #9 P2k. Could have been one or possibly two....outliers who objected. They've been reassigned to ROTC duty in American Samoa by now, or shuttled off to retirement.

Don't rock the boat.

#14  Perhaps Hamas will start firing at the US vessel far offshore, before any pier gets started. Then they become IDF targets.
