Salafist, Brotherhood differences 'undeniable': Egypt's El-Borhami
Of course. The Muslim Brotherhood is in power, the Salafists aren't. No greater difference needed.
[Al Ahram] Ongoing differences between Egyptian Salafist parties and the Moslem Brüderbund "cannot be denied," Yasser El-Borhami, deputy head of the ultra-conservative Salafist Call, said on Thursday.

Speaking to the press during a visit to Gazoo, El-Borhami added that, despite these differences, Salafist groups would "not allow the state to collapse," Egyptian state news agency MENA reported.

The Salafist Call's differences with the Moslem Brüderbund are concerned mainly with the issue of the implementation in Egypt of Islamic Law.

El-Borhami, currently in Gazoo to attend a conference devoted to the ongoing 'Judaisation' of Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque, added: "All political forces have the right to express their views via peaceful protest."

He went on to voice his rejection, however, of violent protests, which, he said, "aim to destroy state institutions and fail to respect the law and constitution."

The Gazoo conference, organised by the Paleostinian Salafist Ibn-El Baz group, invited Egypt's Salafist Call to attend the event.

At the conference, El-Borhami stated that Jerusalem (Al-Quds) had been lost when the Arab nation was split and Islamic Law ceased to be applied. He also called on Mohammedans to support the Paleostinians of Al-Quds against Israel both financially and politically.

Egypt is bracing for nationwide anti-government protests on 30 June, which will mark the end of the first year in office of President Mohamed Morsi, who himself hails from the Moslem Brüderbund group.

Yemen Frees 17 Activists Held since Saleh-Era
[An Nahar] Yemeni authorities released on Thursday 17 of 58 political activists held since the 2011 uprising against former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, an Agence La Belle France Presse correspondent witnessed in Sanaa.

As they came out of the central prison's compound, youth activists who have been pressing for their release raised their hands chanting: "Revolt, revolt -- it will go on."

The former detainees quickly left with their families, who had been waiting outside.

Their release came after 20 detainees began a hunger strike on May 24 in a bid to step up pressure to be freed, according to local rights group Hood.

Some of them are suspected of involvement in an attack on Saleh in June 2011 which killed 11 of his guards.

On Wednesday, state news agency Saba reported that the attorney general has ordered the release of 17 out of 22 people nabbed
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
for their suspected involvement in the attack.

According to local rights groups, the 22 had been held in Sanaa, 19 in Hajja province, 11 in Saada in the north and six in several other prisons across the country.

In addition to the 58 whose whereabouts had been documented, the fate of 17 others remains unknown, Hood says.

Leading youth activists, joined by Yemen's Human Rights Minister Huriyah Mashhoor have been campaigning for the release of the detainees.

In March, Hadi issued a decree ordering the release of those detained during the revolution, and activists accuse the public prosecutor, a remnant from the Saleh era, of having ignored it.

Hussain Bedralddeen al-Houthi to be buried nine years after his death
[Yemen Post] Now that the Houthis (a former Shiite dissident group now organized as a political faction called Ansar Allah) have properly established that the remains of their late leader, Hussain Bedralddeen al-Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is "God is Great, Death to America", Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews" ...
were indeed his, the group is planning to organize his official funeral this Wednesday in its stronghold of Sa'ada (northern province of Yemen), nine years after his death.

Killed in 2004 in an ambush, the founder of the Houthis movement, Hussain Bedralddeen al-Houthi's physical remains were held by the regime of former President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
. It was only in December 2012 that President Abdo Rabbo Mansour Hadi agreed in the spirit of reconciliation to grant Abdel Maleh al-Houthis' request to properly bury this father.

Earlier this week Ansar Allah issued a statement in which it officially announced Hussain Bedralddeen al-Houthi's death. Rather accusatory, Ansar Allah laid the blame on the former government, stating that their leader had been ambushed by the military while in the company of several of his family members. "They were besieged with aircraft and artillery bombing, leading to a lack of food and medicine. They also cut off the water pipes and poured gasoline into a shelf, and then they bombed and set fire to it," read the statement.

Ansar Allah then alleged that despite an agreed truce al-Houthi was mercilessly bumped off when he stepped out of his hiding place.

While the issue of blame will in all likelihood remain a source of debate between the Houthis and the central government, officials have said a funeral will help all parties to move on and move past old grievances, bringing some degree of political closure.

With only a few hours to go before Houthis supporters in the capital and across several northern province have put up billboards and posters of late Hussain Bedralddeen al-Houthi, determined to give the man they're already calling a martyr a proper send off.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Hizb ut-Tahrir rally in Crimea demands caliphate revival
Around 2,000 people joined a rally staged in the Crimean capital Simferopol by the Ukrainian branch of the Hizb ut-Tahrir. The rally commemorated the 89th anniversary of the abolition of the Ottoman Caliphate in 1924.

The demonstrators were holding black and white flags carrying slogans "There is no God except Allah and Muhammad is the prophet of Allah", "89 years without the Caliphate is a great tragedy", "Islam is our guidance for life", "Only the Caliphate protects our religion", and "We are Muslims, our ideology is Islam, our constitution is Quran".

Up to 400 women in Islamic dress attended the rally. They stood separately from the men.

Hizb ut-Tahrir Ukraine office spokesman Fazyl Amzayev said, "The rally is dedicated to the 89th anniversary of the dissolution of the Caliphate. It is part of the campaign being held by our organization across the world. We gathered Muslims in Ukraine in order to speak about the Caliphate's place in Islam and how it was destroyed. We want to convey the idea that rebuilding the Caliphate is our duty and responsibility before Allah.

"We are governed by the laws of Islam in our work. These laws of Islam carry peace and harmony. They will not carry any destruction of the public system as long as we obey these laws. We continue our movement."

The rally continued for an hour and a half and speeches were delivered in Russian and Arabic.

The demonstrators called the abolition of the Ottoman Caliphate in Turkey on March 3, 1924 a tragedy, blaming Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Europe
EU tries to keep close eye on fighters in Syria
European Union nations pledged Friday to step up cooperation in an effort to keep the more than 600 EU citizens now fighting in Syria from veering toward terrorism upon their return home.
Going to track them? Maybe you should just give them the Verizon unlimited plan...
EU home affairs ministers said they plan to increase surveillance of social media, intensify cooperation with nations that border Syria like Turkey and urge the European Parliament to approve legislation to make suspicious travel to the region more traceable.
It's like PRISM, only with European technical competence...
French Interior Minister Manuel Valls says the number of EU citizens fighting abroad with potential links to terror groups "has never been seen at this scale." He said it by far outstripped recent wars and conflicts in Afghanistan, Somalia and the Sahel region.
A suggestion: don't let them back into your countries. Any hard boy who goes to Somalia to fight gets to stay in Somalia. He's made his allegiance clear, and it's not to La Belle France...
Valls said a survey of the eight nations most concerned about citizens fighting with the opposition in Syria showed that some 500 had left for Syria, and said the total for the EU's 27 member nations would be higher than 600.

He refused to divulge specific numbers for other nations but said some 120 Frenchmen had already gone to Syria.

"In less than two years, the mass in Syria is bigger than that what we have known" in other recent conflicts combined, he said.

Bulgaria Denies Backtracking over Hizbullah Involvement in Burgas Attacks
[An Nahar] Bulgaria denied Thursday backtracking over whether Hizbullah was behind a kaboom last July on its soil that killed five Israelis, saying earlier comments were misinterpreted.

"Bulgaria has not revised its stance on the terrorist act," Foreign Minister Kristian Vigenin was cited in a statement as telling Ireland's ambassador to Sofia John Rowan in talks.

On Wednesday, in an interview with state BNR radio, Vigenin had said that evidence that Hizbullah was behind the attack at Burgas airport on the Black Sea was "circumstantial" and "not categorical" at this stage.

He urged the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
to seek additional proof from other cases before labeling Hizbullah's military wing a "terrorist" entity, sparking press speculation of a change in position by Sofia.

A statement from the previous government in February had said that there was a "justified conclusion" that two helpers of the bomber belonged to the party.

That led to renewed calls for the EU to join the United States in adding Hizbullah's military wing to its list of "terrorist" groups.

"Bulgaria is ready to join a consensus decision of the EU and it is our responsibility to present an even more solid basis for this," Vigenin was cited as saying Thursday.

In order to do this, Bulgaria urged swifter responses to requests for assistance it has sent to several countries, he added.

Israel, Leb, Australia and Morocco were mentioned by chief prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov in February as the countries Sofia had asked for help.

Five Israeli tourists and their Bulgarian driver were killed in the July 18 bombing on their tourist bus. The identity of the lone bomber, who also perished, has so far remained a mystery.

The Grand Turk
'Terrorists' at Turkey demos: Erdogan
[Al Ahram] Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that members of a "terrorist organization" were taking part in deadly anti-government protests sweeping Turkey and refused to cancel a controversial development plan that sparked them.

"Among the protesters, there are bad boys, some of them implicated in terrorism," Erdogan told news hounds in Tunis on the final day of a north African tour that has been overshadowed by the unrest back home.

"Supporters of this terrorist organization were present" including some who acted in Istanbul's Taksim Square, epicentre of the protests, he added.

Seven foreigners implicated in the unrest have been tossed in the calaboose
Please don't kill me!
, Erdogan said, without specifying what part they had played in the violence.

Six were arrested in Istanbul and one in Ankara, according to the interior ministry.

"Seven foreigners have been implicated in the unrest, six of whom have appeared before the public prosecutor and one of whom is under arrest," Erdogan said.

Later in Ankara, Interior Minister Muammer Guler said the foreigners locked away
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
were two French, two Iranians, a Greek, a German and an American, and that two had been released, without saying who.

"The authorities have decided to deport four of these foreigners, and one of them is still in jug," he said.

Since last weekend, thousands of angry demonstrators opposed to the conservative policies of Erdogan's Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) have taken to the streets of Turkey's main cities calling for him to quit.

A heavy-handed police response to a peaceful demonstration against the redevelopment of Istanbul's Gezi Park next to Taksim Square was the initial spark for the nationwide unrest that has now claimed three lives.

Erdogan has previously defied the protesters, dismissing them as "extremists".

"We will not allow a minority to dictate to the majority, nor will we accept the tyranny of the majority," he said on Thursday, while defending the urban development plan. "We will go through with this project... (which) respects (Turkey's) history, culture and environment."

"What we are doing is to protect the rights of the majority and to preserve the beauty of Istanbul," Erdogan said, adding that he did not link the environmental activists to the unrest. "We know very well who is implicated in the troubles, and I exclude all citizens concerned about preserving the environment."

Home Front: WoT
U.S. Defends Phone Record Sweep as 'Tool' against Terror
[An Nahar] The U.S. government Thursday said a top spy agency was using a "crucial tool" against terrorism by sweeping up domestic telephone records, but new revelations on the program sparked a swift backlash.

One civil liberties group branded the practice, authorized by a top secret court order, as "beyond Orwellian" while others argued the idea of a massive dragnet encompassing tens of millions of phone records was unconstitutional.

The program, which began under the Bush administration, apparently does not monitor the content of telephone calls or who is making them, but provides "metadata" on phone numbers used and the duration of calls.

Advocates say the data, collected on calls inside and outside the United States, can then be crunched to show odd patterns of communication which can tip off spy agencies to possible planning for terror attacks.

Senior U.S. officials, while not confirming reports in the Guardian newspaper that service provider Verizon had been ordered to turn over reams of data, defended the National Security Agency (NSA), the secret listening service.

"Information of the sort described in the Guardian article has been a critical tool in protecting the nation from terrorist threats to the United States," said a senior U.S. official on condition of anonymity.

"It allows counterterrorism personnel to discover whether known or suspected faceless myrmidons have been in contact with other persons who may be engaged in terrorist activities, particularly people located inside the United States."

The official said that all three branches of the U.S. government, the White House, Congress, and the judicial system, were involved in reviewing and authorizing intelligence collection under current laws.

#2  Tracing numbers and calls from the captured Tsarnaev Bros. cellies wouldn't be sufficient, we'll just harvest a million or so from the actual service providers. Once we link the towers and numbers with voice recognition software [cellie DNA], the actual numbers will be inconsequential. We'll be off to the races and will only need a huge new data-storage facility in relatively stable climate.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan rejects Indian Punjab militancy accusations
[BETA.DAWN] Pakistain on Thursday denied New Delhi's allegation that its spy agency was trying to recruit and train Death Eaters to carry out attacks across the border in the Indian state of Punjab.

Indian home minister Sushilkumar Shinde leveled the accusation Wednesday that Pakistain's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was pressuring Sikh bad boy leaders to target Punjab and other parts of India.

"Pakistain rejects those remarks accusing us and implicating one of our government agencies for fomenting terror in Indian Punjab," said foreign ministry front man Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry.

"Such a statement in our view is uncalled for and regrettable. We feel that making such statement has the potential of undermining the efforts made by both sides to normalise the relations between the two countries."

The Indian home minister had alleged that there had been "some significant development on the Sikh militancy front" and accused the ISI of seeking to further its "terror plans" in India.

Chaudhry urged Delhi to share any evidence it had of such involvement and said further accusations could harm already fragile ties.

Over 40 police checkposts abolished in KP
[Dawn] Police department has abandoned 48 checkposts across the province following the directives of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
Chief Minister Pervez Khattak.According to a police spokesperson, some of these checkposts have been abandoned completely while some of them have been changed into mobile ones.

He said that most of those checkposts were abandoned in Kohat, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Buner, Mardan, Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....
, Haripur and Mansehra
...a city and an eponymous district in eastern Khyber-Pakthunwa, nestled snug up against Pak Kashmir, with Kohistan and Diamir to the north and Abbottabad to the south...
districts. In the rest of districts including Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
the process would continue to review the role of the checkposts in different areas, he said. "Unnecessary checkposts will be abolished during the next few days," he added.

Some of the check posts, the spokesperson said, were changed into mobile ones so that police could check movement of suspected people and anti-social elements. He said that unnecessary checking would be stopped to avoid problems to the citizens and keep a check on coppers, who forced people for extortion.

Inspector General of Police Ihsan Ghani has directed the officers of the department to give full attention to their professional duty and public protection and deal people in a responsible way.

It may be mentioned here that the chief minister has directed police that no one should be incarcerated
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!

PTI reluctant to give Jamaat its choice dept
[Dawn] Opposition of donor agencies to give education department in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
coalition government to Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
is delaying the formation of the provincial cabinet, it is learned.

"Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
had agreed to give education department to Jamaat-e-Islami in its meetings after elections but is now requesting it to give up claim to it after the objection of donor agencies, including DFID, which pumps millions for development of the province's education," an insider told Dawn on Wednesday.

However,
denial ain't just a river in Egypt...
the donors' fears were allayed when informed that the JI nominee to get the education portfolios was a former KP health minister with whom they had good relations.

"We have worked with the person who is supposed to head the education department on behalf of the JI in the KP government. His work had been excellent and we don't have any objection to his being at the helm," source in another donor agency, working in health and education department with KP government said.

Officials of World Bank also verified the credential of the former health minister and said that the donors should expect good from the party in view of his performance during five-year (2002-2007) tenure in the ministry, sources said.

A fortnight ago, when the news broke out that PTI had agreed to give education department to the JI, a well-coordinated campaign on social media began that the JI would radicalize the education department promoting donor agencies to reach top PTI leadership and express their reservations, sources said.

"The donors are convinced and have no problem with JI to hold education department in the provincial setup but the PTI is now requesting the JI to give up claim on education ministry," they said.

PTI chairman Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
had requested a JI delegation recently that he had worked in education sector for the past 15 years and now wants to replicate his success in KP.

"Donors couldn't influence the PTI decisions but it wants to enforce its reform programme," a source quoted Imran Khan as telling a JI delegation.

JI had argued that it had similar programme to reform the education department and would do its level best to teach the students on modern lines, sources said.

The JI had also argued that would run the department that comes under the PTI-led government which will oversee its performance.

"We have a lot of experience in education and want to use the same for the people of this province. We have conveyed PTI that we will run the department in accordance with the PTI expectations," they said.

PTI hadn't refused that it was not giving the education ministry to JI but had requested it to take another ministry instead and let it run, sources said.

Both the parties were determined to hammer out differences as soon as possible to form the provincial cabinet and began work towards implementation of their programme, they said.

When contacted, senior JI leader Professor Ibrahim Khan said there was no deadlock between PTI and his party on the education department and that his party would finally get it.

"We and PTI have same programmes and would strive to implement through united efforts. We will get education and finance ministry according to our arrangements," he said.

Professor Ibrahim said the ministries couldn't be a block between the two parties.

"Today, we met with chief minister and discussed with him the problems faced by the people. The issue of ministries didn't come under discussion," he said.

Pakistan Families of Victims Demand Halt to U.S. Drone Strikes
[An Nahar] The families of Pak victims of U.S. drone strikes Thursday wrote to new Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
urging him to stop the campaign -- by shooting the unmanned aircraft down if necessary.

The high court in the northwestern city of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
on May 9 declared the CIA drone strikes targeting suspected Taliban and al-Qaeda snuffies to be a "war crime" and ordered Islamabad to take steps to halt them.

Victims' families and their lawyer Mirza Shahzad Akbar have written to Sharif urging him to heed the court's ruling, which calls on the government to take the matter up at the U.N. Security Council.

Islamabad regularly issues statements condemning the missile strikes as a violation of illusory sovereignty, but has yet to take any stronger action publicly to pressure Washington to end the campaign, which began in 2004.

"The court has ordered the government of Pakistain and its security forces to administer a proper warning to the United States that future drone strikes will not be tolerated," Akbar wrote in the letter, seen by Agence La Belle France Presse.

Akbar said that if Pakistain failed to persuade the U.S. to stop the strikes through the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
, "the court has very clearly ordered to shoot down the drones".

At a news conference with two relatives of drone victims, Akbar warned that Sharif would face contempt of court proceedings if he did not implement the court order within 14 days.

Mohammad Nazir, whose son was killed in a U.S. drone strike in June 2006 in North Wazoo tribal district, a haven for myrmidons, endorsed the demand and said he wanted Dire Revenge™ for his son's death.

"My son was 25 years old, he was a laborer and was working in a house with other laborers in the night when the drone strike took place," he told AFP.

"According to tribal law, you kill the son of that person who kills your son, so I will take Dire Revenge™ of my son's killing whenever I have the opportunity."

According to the British Bureau of Investigative Journalism, since 2004 up to 3,587 people have been killed in Pakistain by drone attacks, which Washington says are an effective weapon in the fight against Islamist militancy.

On Wednesday Sharif used his first speech as prime minister to urge the U.S. to end the strikes and said a comprehensive strategy for tackling extremism should be

200 Russian Islamists with al-Qaeda in Syria
[Al Ahram] Some 200 Russian Islamists who back North Caucasus Death Eaters are fighting in Syria for al-Qaeda, the head of the Russian security service (FSB) said Thursday, Russian news agencies reported.

"The fact that around 200 fighters from Russia are fighting on the side of the Caucasus Emirate under the flag of al-Qaeda and other related structures provokes concern in Russia," the head of the FSB Alexander Bortnikov said at an international security forum in the central Russian city of Kazan.
