Hat tip: Drudge

Drudge links to this and asks: Where did the mic cord go?

However I can see a blurry line extending up from where it appears to disappear. This may appear to be another non-story (like Biden's truthful claim that Delaware was a slave state) that Drudge is trying to hype?

Army Knife Eats New York City!

I didn't really want to post an advertisement here at Rantburg, but this was nigh well irresistable. Sadly, it's a Wenger and not Victorinox, so there's no way I'd even consider buying it, but it has to be seen to be believed.

If a moderator could please insert the black background photo from the website below my header text, I'd appreciate it.

The Most Incredible Knife

Wenger wants you to do one thing: throw out your old knives. Actually, it wants you to do several things: throw out your bike tools, your toiletries, your laser pointer and so on, because you can find all of these instruments in a huge Swiss Army knife, which includes every tool the company makes. Wenger is calling the contraption “Giant Knife Version 1.0.” It debuted with all 85 features and can perform hundreds of functions.

Who doesn’t need a cigar cutter next to a bicycle chain rivet setter next to a golf divot repair tool? Wenger is on to something with this everyman’s gadget. It wouldn’t be a knife, though, without a blade, so Wenger put seven in the line-up. And it wouldn’t be Swiss Army unless it came with tweezers and a toothpick. (They’re included, too.)

Here are all 85 tools included in Giant Knife, Version 1.0:

1. 2.5” 60% Serrated locking blade
2. Nail file, nail cleaner

Jeb declares state of emergency in Fla.
A hurricane watch was issued Sunday for the Florida Keys and Gov. Jeb Bush ordered a state of emergency in anticipation of Tropical Storm Ernesto. Ernesto, which had strengthened into a hurricane for about 10 hours, weakened back into a tropical storm by late afternoon with top sustained winds of 60 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. Still, the Miami-based hurricane center said the storm was expected to strengthen and potentially reclaim its hurricane status before reaching the southeastern coast of Cuba on Monday morning. "It certainly looks like it's going to impact a significant portion of Florida before it's all over," said Max Mayfield, the director of the National Hurricane Center.

Officials in the Keys told tourists to postpone any immediate plans to travel there and ordered those already in the island chain to leave. All travel trailers and recreational vehicles were ordered off the islands immediately. Residents were taking notice too: a Home Depot store in Key West was busy Sunday afternoon as customers shopped for generators and other storm-preparation equipment.

#5  We're expecting it to hit here Wed or Thurs. Got the H2O, will be closing up the hurricane shutters, and settling in to watch the Weather Channel. ;) More than likely, Ernesto will be hitting us as a strong tropical storm.

BTW, if there is anyone in S Florida reading this, you might want to see if there are hotel rooms in Daytona or Jax if you want to get out of there. Everything in Brevard County (we're on the hurricane/tropical storm borderline) is booked up right now. There might be something in Orlando, but I would be surprised if there was.

alGore: 'Democracy is under attack'
Yawn. Still? Again? The attic is still vacant.
LONDON (AFP) - Former US Vice-President Al Gore warned an audience at the Edinburgh International Television Festival that "democracy is under attack". The former presidential candidate said television networks in the world's biggest and most powerful democracies must do more to foster debate, which he said was crucial for democracy to flourish. "In my country and others around the world democracy is under attack," the 58-year-old said.

Gore, who was also in Edinburgh partly to promote his film and book about climate change, both titled "An Inconvenient Truth", continued: "There's a feeling in the US on the part of many that the way democracy operates today is very different from the system we learned about in school."

He said that democracy, which he described as a "conversation", was now "more controlled and centralised", and that the most important role of the media was to facilitate democracy.

Gore said American politicians were spending their time raising funds at small gatherings and cocktail parties because, "the only thing that matters in American politics now is having enough money to put 30-second commercials on air to persuade the voters to elect or re-elect you."

The Internet, however, "offered the promise of recreating a meritocracy of ideas" and while not yet creating the wave of change that has been anticipated, had been "creeping into the TV domain".

Commenting on the US-led war in Iraq, increasingly opposed both by American politicians and grass-roots activists, Gore said: "It's been a long time since the US Senate or members of the House of Representatives had a feeling that what was said made any difference at all."

Questioned as to whether he thought US President George W. Bush, who defeated him in the 2000 presidential elections, was stupid, Gore replied: "I don't think he's unintelligent at all. He's incurious ... there's a puzzling lack of curiosity."
He's just trying to keep up with Carter in the ex-Prez Stupidity Stakes.

India-Pakistan
Russia Starts Multiple-Launch Rocket Systems Deliveries to India
Russia has started deliveries of Smerch multiple-launch rocket systems to India. The $150 million deal was signed last December. Under the contract signed with Rosoboronexport arms exporting monopoly Urals based company Motovilikhinskiye Zavody will provide about 30 modernised Smerch systems to arm three regiments of the Indian Army, Indian media reported. Smerch sales to India have been under negotiation since the late 1990s. The rockets with inbuilt gyroscopes for perfect homing at the target are said to be world leaders in their class, have a range of up to 70 km and can be armed with a wide range of conventional warheads including deadly thermo-baric (vacuum) capable of destroying enemy personnel sheltered in reinforced concrete bunkers and pill-boxes, said a spokesman of the Smerch designer Tula-based Splav company.

#1  Besides rocket artillery, India needs additional tube artillery... the contracts for 155mm howitzers has been moving very slowly through the procurement process. The Indian army prefers the Swedish Bofors guns.

#2  The Indians are missing a bet : they need to buy the G-5 and G-6 155mm howitzer systems from South Africa, but with tubes of 55 caliber. Those guns can fire all standard NATO 155 rounds plus have a great series of base-bleed ammo that was designed specifically for them. The base-bleed ammo has a major range increase to it. Plus, the South Africans will mostl likely do a technology transfer deal as part of a 500 gun buy.

#3  Denel is blacklisted by the Indian MoD over allegations that it paid money o a British agent to secure inside information from the MoD price committee.

#4  And yes, that is as stupid as it gets.

The original Bofors contract had a provision for tech transfer. When details of the bribes paid by Bofors came out, the MoD blacklisted Bofors and suspended the contract.

Bofors got all their money. The Indian politicians got their bribe money and got away scot free.

And the Army?

Well, the Indian Army didn't get all the guns in the contract and there was no tech transfer.

So two decades later it still has a gun shortage..

Bofors is no longer blacklisted but the Congress party is terrified to conclude another contract because they might get implicated again.

They blacklisted the South Africans.

That leaves only crappy Russian guns.. which the Indian Army does not want..

Only in India....

#5  The rockets with inbuilt gyroscopes for perfect homing at the target

Nothing says "perfect homing" like WWII-era technology!

#6  I've heard Smerch is a lot better than a WW2 Katushya.

I think Badanov also has a rant somewhere about the problems associated with describing the SU's/ex-SU's artillery rockets as WW2 tech.

Home Front Economy
Ernesto may be whimping out
At 1100 am [Aug 28]EDT...1500z...the center of Tropical Storm Ernesto was ... about 35 miles...west-northwest of Guantanamo Cuba.
Ernesto is moving toward the northwest near 10 mph...
Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 40 mph...with higher gusts. Additional weakening is likely as
Ernesto moves over land today...

[Ernesto has been steadily moving to the right of the forecast path (possibly a plot by Karl Rove) it is possible the interaction with Cuba will cause Ernesto to dissipate; the best chance of significant damage to the US is if Ernesto strengthens east of FL and hits NC]

#7  "best chance of significant damage to the US is if Ernesto strengthens east of FL and hits NC"

I hope it doesn't get stronger than a tropical storm in Florida or along the East Coast, but I'm hoping it brings a decent amount of rain to Virgina. We're desperate for rain in Central Virginia - voluntary water restrictions already in place, mandatory threatened in a couple of week if we don't get significant rain.

Fingers crossed....
