Man Robs Waffle House With Pitch Fork
(AP) Police are searching for a man who used a pitchfork to rob a Waffle House restaurant northeast of Atlanta.

Norcross police say 50-year-old Jeffery Wooten entered the diner in Norcross, Georgia, Thursday night and forced people toward a back room. He then grabbed the cash register.

WSB-TV reports that the suspect dropped the pitchfork while carrying that cash register back to his truck.

Two restaurant workers followed the robber outside, grabbed the abandoned pitchfork and used it to smash a window on the robber's truck as he escaped, possibly injuring the suspect.

Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers says investigators have secured a warrant charging Wooten with armed robbery. He has not yet been caught.

UPDATE: More Than 2,500 Killed in Landslide in Badakhshan
[Tolo News] According to the Governor of Badakhshan, more than 2,500 people have been killed and more than 300 homes are buried under rocks and mud due to a landslide in northern Badakhshan province on Friday afternoon.

So far, only eight people have been rescued.

The incident took place in Argo district of the province when a number of the people were rescuing those already trapped in an earlier landslide, when suddenly rocks began falling causing another landslide killing more than 2,500 people, said the Governor of Badakhshan, Shah Waliwallah Adib.

Adib said that they have warned 700 other homes to evacuate because of the unsettled rock-fall.

An instructor of the Argo police headquarter, Qari Sayfuddin, added that more than 1,500 livestock were also killed in the incident.

The Deputy Interior Minister, Mohammad Ayoub Salangi, confirmed the incidents and said a rescue team has been sent to the area.

Over 2,000 trapped in Afghan landslide
[The Peninsula] More than 2,000 people are trapped after a landslide smashed into a village in a remote mountainous area of northeastern Afghanistan yesterday, a front man for the local governor said, prompting a massive search and rescue effort.

"There were more than 1,000 families living in that village. A total of 2,100 people - men, women and kiddies - are trapped," Naweed Forotan, a front man for the Badakhshan governor said.

A senior police official earlier said up to 500 people were missing, believed dead.

Three bodies have been pulled out of the rubble in Argo district and at least 100 people are being treated for injuries, Colonel Abdul Qadeer Sayad, a deputy police chief of Badakhshan province, said.

The landslide, which follows a week of heavy rain at a time of melting spring snow, crushed hundreds of houses and damaged hundreds more, he said.

Villagers were attempting to recover their possessions after a smaller landslide crashed into the village.

No one was hurt in the first slide, officials said. The second deadly slide struck a few hours later.

He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...

MERS IN USA
NEW YORK -- Health officials say a deadly virus from the Middle East has turned up for the first time in the U.S. No details about the case have been released. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention planned a Friday afternoon briefing about the case. The CDC says it is investigating along with health officials in Indiana.
The virus has been found in camels, but officials don't know how it is spreading to humans.
Middle East respiratory syndrome - or MERS - first surfaced two years ago. Since then, at least 400 cases of the respiratory illness have been reported, and more than 100 people have died. Saudi Arabia was been the center of the outbreak. All the victims have had ties to the Middle East or to someone who traveled there.

The virus has been found in camels, but officials don't know how it is spreading to humans.
The Telegraph adds some details:
Mers virus spreads to US via Britain

Public Health England was on Friday night contacting two passengers who flew to Heathrow alongside a man diagnosed with a deadly camel-borne virus that has killed dozens in the Middle East.

America confirmed that the first reported case within its borders of the newly emerging Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or Mers, had been detected in the state of Indiana, where an American had been hospitalised after returning to the US a week ago.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said AmericaÂ’s first case of the virus involved a US citizen who worked as a health care worker in Saudi Arabia.

Public Health England said the man flew on British Airways Flight 262 from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to London, and transferred at Heathrow for onward travel to the US, where he was later hospitalised.

“The risk of the infection being passed to other passengers on Flight 262 is extremely low,” the body said. “However, as a precautionary measure, Public Health England has contacted UK passengers who were sitting in the vicinity of the affected passenger to provide health information.”

Egypt has issued a warning against travel to Saudi Arabia as the virus spreads across the region just before the pilgrimage season.

EgyptÂ’s health ministry said that it was warning children under 15 and adults over 65, pregnant women and anyone suffering from chronic heart and chest diseases to postpone their pilgrimages.

The main Hajj season is in October this year, but many Muslims also make Umrah, the so-called “lesser pilgrimage”, at other times.

The case of the Egyptian who fell ill was first picked up at Cairo airport. He is said to be in a stable condition in hospital, but his uncle in Saudi Arabia, from whom he is believed to have become infected, has already died.

Mers causes a fever and a cough, but the effect can vary dramatically, with a high mortality rate in some people, but a majority testing positive with minor symptoms or none at all.

The infected person in Indiana is being kept in isolation in hospital.
"We can break the chain of transmission in this case through focused efforts here and abroad,” said Dr Tom Frieden, the director of the CDC.
Wash your hands with soap and water every two hours, dear Reader, and do not touch your T-zone. The Army ran the experiment, and that cuts your chance of contracting any infection by something like 90%.

This Week in Guns, May 3rd, 2014

A Los Angeles, California sheriff's deputy pleaded guilty to violating an 80 year old federal law (The National Firearms Act, 1933) that restricts ownership of rifles with barrels less than 16 inches in length. This is one of the few laws that old of any kind the federal government actually enforces.

Following near record shattering shootings in Chicago, a city with one of the most draconian gun laws in the nation, a Chicago police official, Garry McCarthy, has demanded even more gun control. Gun control has worked very well in Illinois, if your goal is to have young black men shoot each other in large numbers.

Researching the latest Bundy ranch episode has consumed my time, so I made note of very little from last week.

The left's fever swamp is brimful of creeps demanding dead men and women at the Bundy Ranch. Crazy f*ckers.

Loads.

Mullah Rapes 10-Year-Old Girl in Kunduz
[Tolo News] On Friday, local officials in northern Kunduz province said a 10-year-old girl was raped by a mullah in a garden in the capital of the province two days ago.

The girl has been taken to a hospital in Kunduz city and mullah Aminullah was incarcerated
Please don't kill me!
.

The victim's family sent her to learn how to read and recite the Koran from Mullah Aminullah.

The girl was weeping while explaining how it unfolded.

"[He] forcefully took me outside of the mosque and tied my hands, legs and mouth," she cried. "I was yelling 'be afraid of God,' he continued to rape me."

As she was crying reliving the rape, she said that at the end of the incident mullah Aminullah threatened her saying, "if you tell your family about this, I will kill them."

The victim's mother said she sent her daughter to the mosque to receive a religious study. She added that mullah Aminullah arrived to their village two months ago.

Officials at the governmental hospital in Kunduz confirmed that the girl was raped.

The tragic incident has followed major condemnations; Kunduz Provincial Women Affairs Department head, Nadira Giya, has asked the legal and judicial branches to severely punish the rapist.

"Those who were involved in this should be punished to serve as a lesson for others," Giya said.

Just last week, a man named Sayed Ahmad had his ears and nose cut off by relatives in northern Baghlan province after he reportedly raped his young female cousin.

Ahmad's aunt said that he raped her daughter three months ago. She said her and her husband were the ones who severed his ears and nose as punishment. They have both been taken into custody by provincial police.

Africa Horn
Peace talks tentatively set for South Sudan
South Sudan’s president agreed Friday to meet with his rival as soon as next week to jumpstart peace talks that have been stalled for months and, potentially, lay groundwork for a new government to bring the world’s newest nation out of bloodshed.
And with Jahwn involved, it's doomed from the start...
US Secretary of State John Kerry met for about 90 minutes with President Salva Kiir in his lush office compound in the capital Juba and emerged to announce a tentative agreement for the peace talks as early as next week in Ethiopia. The prime minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, has agreed to mediate the talks.

Kerry said Kiir’s rival, the former vice president-turned-rebel Riek Machar, has previously indicated he would engage in cease-fire discussions. The American diplomat said he hoped to speak to Machar later Friday.

“The unspeakable human costs that we are seeing over the course of the last months, and which could even grow if they fail to sit down, are unacceptable to the global community,” Kerry told reporters after his meeting with Kiir. “Before the promise of South Sudan’s future is soaked in more blood, President Kiir and the opposition must work immediately for cessation of hostilities and to move toward an understanding about future governance for the country.”

Kerry said a cease-fire would likely lead to a transitional government in South Sudan but declined to comment on whether Kiir or Macher could have a role in the country’s future leadership.

If the peace talks happen, they would mark a turning point in nearly six months of horrific fighting that has largely broken down along ethnic lines between rival Dinka and Nuer tribes. The violence has been compared to the threat of genocide, and could also lead to famine later this year since farmers among the nearly 1 million South Sudanese who have fled their homes have had to abandon their crops.

Thousands have been killed in the fighting, which began when Kiir, a Dinka, accused Machar, a Nuer, of plotting a coup to seize power last December.

An earlier cease fire agreement, reached last January, was abandoned within days.

If Kiir and Macher fail to move strongly to curb the violence, or if other fighters continue to violate human rights and disrupt humanitarian aid, Kerry they would be held accountable. The consequences would range from economic sanctions to, potentially, prosecution by international courts.

African nations are willing to deploy between 2,500 and 5,500 troops initially for peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the United Nations. That would require a new U.N. mandate.

The U.S. and U.N. have threatened to bring sanctions against militants on both sides of the fighting — including, potentially, Kiir and Machar themselves. And Western officials are trying to persuade the African Union to deploy thousands of troops to South Sudan to keep the peace.

Rodriguez also accused the United States of committing conspiracy to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Kiev responsible for "punitive action"
h/t Gates of Vienna
The people of Ukraine will hold the Kiev government responsible for launching a "punitive" operation in the south-east, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. The air force was being used against the people, he said on Russian state TV. The EU and the U.S. had to give their views on this, he said, and the Ukrainian government must reconsider its action. . .
Russian intervention to "protect human rights"? Just imagine how the tranzies --- who consider such interventions to be their private property ---will howl.

Moscow Turns to Cossacks to Staunch the Exodus of Ethnic Russians From the North Caucasus

The Cossack issue has become relevant in Russia against the backdrop of the outflow of ethnic Russians from the North Caucasus (http://expert.ru/ratings/izmenenie-doli-russkih-v-naselenii-respublik-severnogo-kavkaza/). Chechnya and Ingushetia have practically become ethnically homogeneous and Dagestan will soon become the next republic to shed its ethnic Russian population entirely (http://skfonews.info/article/124). Ethnic Russians are also leaving North Ossetia and Kabardino-Balkaria (http://www.riss.ru/my-v-smi/2075-status-i-perspektivy-russkogo-naseleniya-na-severnom-kavkaze#.U2CWsrp_v-k). Adygea and Karachaevo-Cherkessia have had large ethnic-Russian populations over the past century and a half, and the situation there is still under MoscowÂ’s control. It should be noted that the outflow of ethnic Russians from the North Caucasus differs from republic to republic. The outmigration of Russians from Dagestan is not the same as the outmigration from North Ossetia, for example. In the first case it is caused by the growth of radical Islam and its confrontation with the authorities, while ethnic Russian are leaving North Ossetia because of the republicÂ’s bleak prospects against the backdrop of a general deterioration of the situation in the area.

It is not surprising that the Russian state has decided to place its bet on the Cossacks, who historically performed the mission of a paramilitary community on the edges of the Russian Empire and moved into the territory of the mountaineers under the protection of the Russian army. The Russian EmpireÂ’s presence was affirmed through the presence of the Cossacks. Naturally, the outflow of ethnic Russians today includes Terek Cossacks, which is why Moscow is paying so much attention to propping up the Cossacks in this part of Russia. Sixteen laws, government decrees and amendments involving the Cossacks that have been adopted over the past 20 years, which testifies to how important the Cossack issue is to the Russian government (http://www.cossacks-lb.ru/laws.html). Twelve of these measures were passed while Vladimir Putin was either president or prime minister.

The mountaineers view the rebirth of the Cossack community with alarm. Dispatching a Cossack battalion named after General Alexei Yermolov to Chechnya during the first Russian-Chechen war of 1994–1996 was a great blunder on the part of the Russian government. Yermolov has always been considered a murderer of civilians during the period of Chechnya’s colonization in the 19th century (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miZ61StT3KU). The unveiling of a monument dedicated to Yermolov in the center of Pyatigorsk was seen as a challenge to the North Caucasian mountaineers (http://www.kavkaz-uzel.ru/articles/178797/). At the same time, the Russian government warns the mountaineers not to erect monuments to people who resisted the Russian generals who conquered the Caucasus in the 19th century (http://rbcdaily.ru/society/562949988962292).

Both the Kuban and Terek Cossacks are located in the North Caucasus. The Terek Cossacks are considered to reside on the most problematic territory, which includes parts of Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Stavropol region. This explains why in January 2010, then-president Dmitry Medvedev made the decision to establish the North Caucasian Federal District, which was carved out of the Southern Federal District. Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachaevo-Cherkessia, North Ossetia–Alania, Chechnya and Stavropol region were included in the new district. This territory was part of Russia’s Terek and Dagestani oblasts prior to 1917 (http://www.runivers.ru/maps/podratlas/24/).

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea's leadership gets a new No. 2
[Beirut Daily Star] North Korea signaled a key leadership change with the announcement Friday that the man seen as supreme leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
's No. 2 had been replaced as political chief of the military.

In a report on May Day celebrations in Pyongyang, the North's official KCNA news agency named Hwang Pyong So as director of the Korean People's Army General Political Bureau, not Choe Ryong Hae, who previously held the position.

The post is viewed as the second most important in the military after Kim, who is supreme commander.

The leadership change comes amid growing concerns that the North is preparing to conduct a fourth nuclear test in the face of stern international opposition after satellite images showed a recent increase in activity at the country's main test site.

"To all intents and purposes, this makes Hwang, who also has close personal ties to Kim Jong-un, the second most powerful man in the country," said Michael Madden, author and editor of the NK Leadership Watch website.

Hwang's appointment came just days after KCNA reported his promotion to the rank of vice marshall on April 28 -- a rank shared with Choe and just four others.

It was not immediately clear what had become of Choe, who was widely believed to have moved into the role of North Korea's unofficial No. 2 following the execution in December of Kim's uncle and political mentor, Jang Song Thaek.

Choe holds a number of other top positions as a politburo standing committee member and a vice chairman of both the Central Military Commission and the National Defense Commission.

There were multiple reports earlier this year that Choe had been incarcerated
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
and possibly purged after he dropped from public view for three weeks -- an unusually long absence for such a senior figure.

His reappearance in March, alongside Kim, led to speculation that his disappearance might have been due to health problems.

"I don't think we can say Choe has been purged, but he's clearly been moved aside, possibly for health or other reasons," said Yang Moo Jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul.

Slavyansk residents block Ukraine forces
[Iran Press TV] Civilians near Ukraine's flashpoint city of Slavyansk have stopped a column of Ukrainian armored vehicles and troops from entering the city amid a Kiev offensive on pro-Russian protesters.

Local residents prevented the column from entering Slavyansk on Friday as the acting Kiev government deployed armed forces to the city's suburbs in a bid to retake the city.

The acting Kiev government launched the military offensive earlier on Friday, using armored vehicles, helicopters and tanks, but their advance towards the city has been limited.

According to Ukraine's Interior Ministry, the country's armed forces are now controlling at least nine Slavyansk checkpoints set up by the protesters.

However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
the city of 130,000 residents is still mostly under the control of pro-Russian protesters.

Kiev also confirmed that pro-Russian gunnies shot down two army helicopters, killing two pilots. In addition, another pilot was injured and taken to hospital by the gunnies.

Arson attack kills 38 in Ukraine's Odessa
[Beirut Daily Star] Thirty-eight people died in an arson attack against a trade union building in Ukraine's southern city of Odessa late Friday, after a day of violent festivities between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian Death Eaters, according to officials.

Ukraine's Interior Ministry, which spoke of a "criminal arson attack," said 30 of those killed were asphyxiated by smoke and eight died trying to escape by jumping out of windows.

Earlier, festivities between the pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian protesters killed four people -- the first eruption of violence in the south after weeks of mounting unrest in Ukraine's east, and the bloodiest day since Kiev's Western-backed government took power.

The U.S. threatened to hit Russia with devastating new sanctions within three weeks if it continued its "destabilization" of Ukraine, where authorities struck pro-Moscow rebels.

Intensifying the war of words that has characterized the monthslong crisis, Obama threatened to expand punitive sanctions to broad sections of the Russian economy if Moscow continued to foment chaos in the former Soviet Republic ahead of planned May 25 presidential polls.

"If in fact we see the disruptions and the destabilization continuing so severely that it impedes elections on May 25, we will not have a choice but to move forward with additional ... severe sanctions," Obama said at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
.

Previously the administration has said such measures would only come into force if Russia sent its 40,000 troops on the border into Ukraine.

B.O. warns of tougher Russia sanctions
[The Peninsula] The US threatened yesterday to hit Russia with devastating new sanctions within three weeks if it continued its "destabilisation" of Ukraine, where authorities struck pro-Moscow rebels and violence spread to the south in the bloodiest day since Kiev's Western-backed government took power.

Turkey drops case against 60 people in graft probe: media
[Beirut Daily Star] Turkish prosecutors on Friday dropped a case against 60 people, including the son of a former minister, in a corruption probe that has rocked the Islamic-rooted government, local media said.

An Istanbul prosecutor handling the probe into graft in Turkey's housing agency TOKI decided not to take the suspects to court, citing "lack of evidence" for his decision.

The suspects who escaped prosecution include Oguz Bayraktar, the son of former environment minister Erdogan Bayraktar, and construction tycoon Ali Agaoglu, the Dogan news agency reported.

They were detained in police raids in mid-December when the corruption scandal first erupted and charged with accepting and facilitating bribes for construction projects and securing construction permits for protected areas.

Erdogan hints at presidential run
Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has decided to maintain a three-term limit for its deputies, the clearest signal yet that Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan will run for the presidency in an August election, the party said on May 2, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

There has been speculation in Turkey that the AKP could change its rules to enable Erdogan, who has dominated Turkish politics for more than a decade, to stay on as prime minister for a fourth term.

"It was decided appropriate to take no steps on the three-term rule," AKP spokesman Huseyin Celik said in a statement, following a five-hour meeting of the party's executive board to discuss the August presidential vote.

Erdogan said in October he would run in the country's first direct presidential election if asked to do so by the party. But his failure to establish the executive presidency he wanted to beef up the largely ceremonial role, and a corruption scandal that has dogged his government since December, had fuelled speculation that he may seek to stay as prime minister.

In the May 2 meeting, the AKP also decided that the party will not propose to change Turkey's current electoral system. Celik announced the decision that future elections will go by the current electoral system.

Prime Minister Erdogan had previously spoken about the Turkish government working on a new election law that would divide the country into 550 single member districts. Currently, the country has 85 districts and 550 members of parliament.
