TORONTO (Reuters) - A Toronto-area man, already serving a four-year sentence for plotting to kill his ex-wife to get out of paying child and spousal support, is now using his incarceration as an excuse to avoid the payments. Ronald Schulz pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy to commit murder, admitting he hired a hitman to break his ex-wife's neck. The "hitman" was in fact an undercover police officer, and Schulz ended up in prison.
In court this week, however, Schulz argued he still can't pay for support due to his incarceration, an argument that his ex-wife's lawyer called the ultimate in audacity.
"Chutzpah is the expression," said Marvin Kurz, who is representing the intended victim Sheryl Janssen. "It's like the child who kills the parents and then throws himself at the mercy of the court because he's an orphan... that's really what he did," he told Reuters Tuesday. Appropriately, most of the weaponry--which included eight .357 magnum revolvers, at least five .38s, two .44s, dozens of 9mm, .45, .25 and .380 caliber semiautomatic pistols, a few Luger .22s, and high-capacity arms such as the Mac-10, seven Tec-9s, and one SKS assault rifle--was kept on-site in a shopping cart, from which the homeless literally chose their weapon...

Like the AJC (Atlanta Journal-Constipation)'s story a year or so ago. No lie, front page they had a huge picture of some homeless get together at Woodruff Park (downtown, literally a block or two from my work). Funny thing was, several of the "homeless" in line for free food were dressed like business-men and one was even gabbing on his cell phone when the AJC snapped the photo. Showing that it's not as bad as the LLL portrays it.
I personally favor Atlanta's attitude, though, when the Olympics were coming. Rounded up all the homeless, gave them like $50 and FREE one-way bus pass to either Miami or New Orleans. I'm sure neither or those cities have ever forgiven "da ATL" for that move, lol!

lol BA i saw g'ville and thought greenville SC. last month there were giving free bus tickets to homeless to travel to greenville. I guess affirmative action warrants the shipping in homeless to meet the quota.

Sunderland man injured after launching firework from bottom
LONDON (AFP) - A man was rushed to hospital in Britain with severe internal injuries after trying to launch a powerful firework from his bottom, an ambulance service spokesman said.
It is thought that the 22-year-old could have been trying to imitate a scene from "Jackass: The Movie", a controversial film featuring a series of edgy pranks. Footage of the incident in Sunderland, north-east England, was captured on a mobile phone by a gang of youths and shows a white flash followed by hysterical laughter and a youth shouting: "Ha ha ha ha," followed by an expletive.
A spokesman for the North East ambulance service said: "We received a call stating there was a male who had a firework in his bottom and it was bleeding." He is now recovering in a Sunderland hospital after sustaining internal injuries including a scorched colon.
The incident took place on November 5, when Britons light bonfires and let off fireworks to commemorate a 17th century plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

That was no bottle rocket. That's what we call a skyrocket were I come from. They're only about 100x more powerful than a standard bottle rocket. And it's hard to tell from the video, but it looked to me like the idiot had the thing in his ass backward. It might have been less damaging to shoot it OUT of his ass and not INTO his ass!!!!

Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele (R), who came up just short yesterday in his Senate race against Rep. Ben Cardin (D), is mulling a bid for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee, according to an informed GOP source.
Steele would not challenge current RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, but chatter among Republican insiders is that Mehlman has made clear for months that he might not return to his current post. "Chairman Mehlman will be making an announcement regarding his future at the RNC in the coming weeks," said RNC communication director Brian Jones.
Mehlman has made outreach to the African American community a priority during his time as head of the party, and Steele would be seen as a logical successor to that effort.
Steele is smart and charismatic. Can he crack heads at the RNC and get them ready for 2008?

Democrat Jon Tester declared victory over Republican Sen. Conrad Burns in Montana on Wednesday in a close contest, but the incumbent declined to concede in a race crucial to control of the U.S. Senate. "We won this thing," Tester, the state senate president and organic farmer, told a Great Falls news conference.
U.S. media called the election for Tester even as some results continued to be tallied after a night of uncertainty. "Jon Tester ran a good race and has the lead right now, but it is extremely close," Burns said in a statement. "There are still votes out there that deserve to be counted. I believe we need to continue to let that process play itself out and there is no need to rush to a conclusion when the votes are this close."
A Democratic win in Montana would give the party 50 seats in the 100-seat U.S. Senate, with the only undecided contest in Virginia. "It's over," Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer, who campaigned for Tester, said by telephone. Burns is "no longer a U.S. senator come January."
Incumbent Burns, first elected in 1988, was tainted by links to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his campaign was marred by several gaffes. Montanans have traditionally voted Republican. Updated unofficial results from the Montana secretary of state's office said Tester won 176,857 votes, compared to 175,059 for Burns. A recount would be allowed if the margin of victory in the official Montana tally is 0.5 percent or less of votes cast -- a possibility given the tight contest.

I agree with Bigjim. If this were Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, or Pennsylvania, with the known widespread Demonrat cheating in Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, or Philly, it would be a different matter, and I would call for state and federal investigations.
But as it is, I think that Abramoff got tied to Burns' tail and people in Montana, unlike, say, Loozhyana, don't want crooks in office.

whoa, whoa, whoa! While I agree that it makes sense not to scream stolen election and do so for the next eight years, I do think the biggest and most issue that we need to resolve over the next four years is to reestablish a trustworthy voting system. It will benefit both Republicans and Democrats and as Americans is probably the only bipartisan issue we can agree on.
We need a system that assures citizen votes are counted and that the people's voices are heard. That means you have to show proof that you are a citizen, voter rolls are cleaned, those who register frauds are sent to jail, and especially that the votes can be recounted when questions are asked.
It is outrageous that Diebold software was created by a copy with ties to Chavez and that there is zero way to establish fraud. We need outrage on this!!
This race may be the perfect poster child to get this issue done, since the Kos Kiddies also want this.
Don't let them scare you off with cries of sour grapes. I believe vote fraud is a grave threat to our democracy. With the way things are going now we are one step shy of third world status.
Exactly. Let the Dems make fools of themselves for the next two years. Conservatives, get back to your core values--- to your heart and soul. The election was not a repudiation of Conservatism, but a repudation of folks who say one thing, then do another. If they finally do what's right, like reign in spending, secure the border, clean up corruption, stop ear-marking, etc, 2008 could shape up as a conservative landslide. If not, it'll be another 50/50 wishy-washy deadlock, or worse.
No one is saying that voter fraud isn't a problem. Hell, I live in C(r)ook County, IL, home of Vote Early, Vote Often.
However, when you consider this election, you just knew that the GOP was cruisin' for a bruisin' for quite sometime.
Look at the losses:
1. Allen - VA: One of the stupidest campaigns ever run, and this man had pretensions of being presidential timber? And what American has the word "macaca" in his vocabulary?
2. Burns - MT: Jack Abramoff. 'Nuff said.
3. Chaffee - RI: Widely acknowledged to be one of the dimmest wits in the Senate (and that's saying something), who only occupied the seat because Daddy did.
4. DeWine - OH: State-wide scandal
Fill in losses and reasons accordingly, but notice (just as mcsegeek did), policy issues aren't exactly at the top of the list.
Start recruiting candidates who aren't prowling for pages, bribes or places to spend father's trust fund, return to solid small-government principles, and send Denny Hastert on a fact-finding mission to Kazhakstan to find the real Borat (with a one-way ticket), and this thing can easily right itself.

"Chickens, television sets, video recorders, playing cards and breeding cages were found in what were supposed to be classrooms but no students," Kanwar Naved, the mayor of the city of Hyderabad said today. "According to education department records, the school had 59 students and two teachers," he said. Some workers detained in today's raid near Hyderabad said the school had been used as a poultry farm for the past 12 years, he said.

The editor of Philadelphia's largest newspaper will step down at the end of the year as the company's new owners seek contract concessions, including deep newsroom cuts, in response to falling circulation and advertising revenue. Philadelphia Inquirer editor Amanda Bennett will be replaced by Bill Marimow, a former Baltimore Sun editor and Inquirer city editor who is now ombudsman at National Public Radio, the paper announced Wednesday.
Which will leave the Inquirer a predictably liberal paper with no flavor except for a slightly bitter aftertaste.
"Bill's background and unique set of skills made him the perfect individual to lead the Inquirer into its next great era of journalism," Brian Tierney, chairman and chief executive of Philadelphia Media Holdings LLC, the paper's owner, said in a statement.
Bennett came to the Inquirer, then owned by Knight-Ridder Inc., as editor in June 2003. The paper's first female editor, she previously was editor of the Lexington Herald-Leader in Kentucky and was a longtime reporter for The Wall Street Journal. Asked by staffers how long she intended to stay, Bennett, 53, said at the time of her hiring that she intended to retire from the Inquirer. "Bill Marimow is a fine journalist, and an old friend. The paper is in good hands," Bennett said in a statement.
