Iraqi pirates kill 1, hurt 1: The remains of an unidentified Iranian man, who was killed by unidentified pirates off Bubiyan island inside Kuwait's territorial waters, have been referred to Forensics, reports Al-Anba daily. Another Iranian, who survived the attack and is believed to be suffering from gunshot wounds, has been admitted to the Amiri Hospital in critical condition. A security source said sea rescue men rushed to the area after the Coast Guard department received an SOS message from another Iranian boat in the vicinity west Bubiyan Island informing about the attack on another vessel by some men believed to be Iraqi pirates.
The pirates allegedly shot and killed one man and injured another before escaping with the merchandise from the boat.
An unidentified source said it is surprising the pirates entered Kuwait's territorial waters, committed the crime and escaped. Can the incident be attributed to lack of security, the source wondered.
ALMATY, Jan 23 (Reuters Life!) - Kazakh border guards arrested a man trying to smuggle 500 parrots in his car from neighbouring Uzbekistan, media reported on Tuesday. "Border guards discovered a live cargo of 500 parrots in his car," Kazakhstan Today news agency quoted a KNB security service official as saying.
It was unclear how the parrots fit into the Kazakh man's Audi. Trade in wild parrots is banned around the world, according to the U.N. Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Flight attendants often deal with obnoxious passengers who won't listen to instructions by kicking them off the plane. But a Massachusetts couple think AirTran Airways went overboard by treating their crying 3-year-old daughter in much the same way.
Julie and Gerry Kulesza and daughter Elly were removed from the flight when the girl refused to take her seat before takeoff, airline officials said Tuesday. But her parents said they just needed a little more time to calm her down. The Kuleszas planned to fly home to Boston on Jan. 14 from Fort Myers after a four-day visit with the girl's paternal grandparents. She was removed because "she was climbing under the seat and hitting the parents and wouldn't get in her seat" during boarding, AirTran spokeswoman Judy Graham-Weaver said.
AirTran officials say they were only following Federal Aviation Administration rules that children age 2 and above must have their own seat and be wearing a seatbelt upon takeoff. "The flight was already delayed 15 minutes and in fairness to the other 112 passengers on the plane, the crew made an operational decision to remove the family," Graham-Weaver said.
But Julie Kulesza said: "We weren't giving an opportunity to hold her, console her or anything."
"Elly was sitting in front of our seat crying," she said in a phone interview. "The attendant motioned to a seat and asked if we purchased it for her."
They had paid for the seat. Gerry Kulesza said another attendant then approached the family and told him: "You need to get her in control and in her seat." The couple told the attendants they were trying. Julie Kulesza said she asked the attendants if Elly could sit on her lap, but they said no.
The family flew home the next day.
The Orlando-based carrier reimbursed the family $595.80, the cost of the three tickets, and offered them three roundtrip tickets anywhere the airline flies, Graham-Weaver said. But that's too little, too late for the Kuleszas. The father said they would never fly AirTran again.

The toddler wasn't crying. She was praying to Allah. The ignorance of islam on this site is remarkable and, dare I say, islamophobic. The child's behavior was in perfect conformity with all four schools of islamic jurisprudence.

A long long time ago, in a place....about 250 miles away, I used to work for Wal-Mart. This one customer had come to pick up his layaway. Now, we searched for it for nearly half an hour, what happened to it, where it went, no clue. And we didn't have any more of the doll, which costs about $45. So, we talked with a manager, who called around, found the doll at another walmart and was going to send one of us to go get it for the customer AND he offered the guy a $25 gift card for having to wait.
This wasn't good enough for the man, who decided the best thing in the world to do was take a swing at the manager. So the manager hit him, we dog piled him, and then the 'off duty' cop we had that watched the front doors came back, slapped the cuffs on him and dragged him away.
Now, I don't honestly know what else the manager could have done for him, but he did as much as he could to make this guy happy. But some people would rather make a scene, get arrested and be Leroy's playmate in a cell instead of having a bit of patience.

Right on. If they have no control over the child, they don't need to fly. It's their problem not the airline's or ours. Same with Muz scum. Comply with rules or walk. No compromise. We don't give a shit.
Which no doubt means the poor child had been in hysterics for a good half hour, and wasn't about to calm down short of chloroform in that environment. Removing the family from the environment was the only option, and one the parents should have requested, were they thinking clearly. A spanking might have been salutory long term, but would only have worsened things short term, it seems to me.

Th flight had aready been delayed 15 minutes. What did the family expect them (and the other 112 passengers) to do? Wait until they get their spawn under control?
The airline was right - sorry but you had 15 minutes to contol your child - if you haven't yet then you probably don't have a clue what your doing.
A diver fought off a great white shark that crunched his head and shoulders in its jaws by attacking its eyes with a chisel. Eric Nerhus, 41, was diving for abalone off the southern New South Wales coast when the three-metre great white struck. It took his head, shoulders and chest into its mouth and crushed his diving mask, smashing his nose. Mr Nerhus, a professional diver, told doctors that he fought off the shark by lunging at its head repeatedly with a metal chisel, used to ply abalone off rocks. After releasing its grip around his head and chest, the shark struck again. It bit his torso, lacerating the diver and shredding the lower part of his wetsuit, before he beat it off again. With blood oozing from his wounds and his wetsuit in tatters, Mr Nerhus emerged from the weedy, nine-metre (30ft) deep waters off Cape Howe, near the fishing port of Eden. He came up to the surface shouting, Help, help, theres a shark, theres a shark, said Mr Nerhuss son, Mark, 25, who was diving with his father. I went over and there was a big pool of red blood. I pulled him out of the water and he was going, Just get me to shore, get me to shore.
Divers in another boat gave first aid and one radioed his father, who was flying near by in a shark-spotting plane, to call for help. Reece Warren, a fisherman who sped Mr Nerhus to shore, said: He had bite marks all around his chest, on the front and on his back. He said that he was swimming through seaweed and it (the shark) just grabbed him head on.
Rescuers believe that Mr Nerhuss lead-lined vest protected him from fatal injury. Most divers use lead weight to submerge but abalone divers use a lead vest rather than a belt. Weve always felt the vest would probably help us in a shark attack and this is the first time weve had it confirmed, said Mr Luobikis, a professional diver for 33 years.

There is no ban on the construction or reconstruction of a mosque in non-Muslims countries around the world. Being Muslim, we should be tolerant, as Islam teaches us the same, said PHC Chief Justice Tariq Pervaz Khan while hearing the writ petition of two Agriculture University students, who had challenged the reconstruction of the United Church located in the Christians Colony inside the University of Peshawar. The church was damaged in the mid 80s when some students allegedly attacked and ransacked the church.
Two students Salahuddin and Murtaza, who had filed the writ petition against the churchs reconstruction in the campus, on the consent of Advocate Khurshid Ahmad Shahan withdrew their writ petition after the PHC observed that construction or reconstruction of a church is not an un-Islamic act. The court asked, Why did the head of a religious partys government allocate funds and attend the reconstruction ceremony as a chief guest, if the churchs construction were un-Islamic? To another question of the court, the petitioners counsel accepted that Muslims were given facilities at the missionary schools.
Shahan contended that the worship places of minorities could not be allowed in institutions where the Muslims were in a majority. The university authorities decision to allow Christians to reconstruct their place of worship inside the campus would give rise to an unending series of demands by other minorities for the same purpose, said the students in the petition. They said the churchs reconstruction would trigger sectarianism among students of minorities and Muslims.

Pakistan has almost a hundred universities now. Not one of them is world class. Truth be told, not even one of them is a real university, if by a university one means a community of scholars engaged in free inquiry and the creation of knowledge.
The teaching at QAU is no better. Rote learning is common, students are not encouraged to ask questions in class, and courses are rarely completed by the end of the semester. This university has three mosques but no bookstore. It is becoming more like a madressah in other ways too.
All student unions are gone, and ideological disputes have evaporated into the thin air. Instead of left vs right politics there is simple tribalism. Now Punjabi students gang together against Pakhtoon students, Muhajirs versus Sindhis, Shias versus Sunnis, etc.
Some campuses are run by gangs of hoodlums and harbour known criminals, while others have Rangers with machine guns on continuous patrol. On occasion, student wolf packs attack each other with sticks, stones, pistols, and automatic weapons. There are many campus murders.
Most students have not learned how to think; they cannot speak or write any language well, rarely read newspapers, and cannot formulate a coherent argument or manage any significant creative expression.
Dumbed down, this generation of Pakistanis is intellectually handicapped. Like overgrown children, students of my university now kill time by making colourful birthday posters for friends, do "istikhara" (fortune telling), and wander aimlessly in Islamabad's bazaars.

You can bet there will be a fatwa in milliseconds. Islamic law says it clearly: it is not allowed to build or enlarge non-muslim religious edifices and it limits what repairs can be carried on existing ones (I am not sure they are even allowed).
You can bet that the usual suspects wil be asking for the head of the judge.

By this standard I have never taught at a real university either. The lock-step Forest Gump version of Marxism prevents free enquiry, let alone scholarship, in any arts or social department I have ever set foot in.

This is pretty interesting stuff. I came across this a few days ago and did some research. Ended up updating the Wikipedia page on the Chiemgauer and some other related pages. It turns out that there's a close link between this kind of scrip and gift cards.
