Idiot of the Day submission, redux
A LEARNER driver accused of doing burnouts in a Perth police station carpark has been charged.

Police at the Cannington station heard the squealing of tyres and went out to allegedly see the 24-year-old Maddington man spinning the wheels of his Ford Falcon in the station's front carpark at 12.30am (WDT) yesterday.

The man's car was seized for 48 hours under Western Australia's hoon legislation.

He was charged with reckless driving, driving contrary to a learner's permit and driving under the influence of alcohol, and will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.

#10  From Wiki....

The term "Hoon" was first used in Australia at the turn of the 20th century where it referred to a man living off immoral earnings(i.e. a pimp). The origin of its current usage is currently unknown but is widely believed to be a shortened form of "hooligan". In more recent times it has been used to describe any young male or female who drives in a manner which is anti-social towards the standards of modern day society. Generally, a hoon is any person who drives any vehicle dangerously and/or fast.

The term is so widespread in Western Australia, that in 2004 the state government introduced Anti-Hoon Legislation. These laws intend to cut down on excessive speed, street racing and illegal burnouts, all of which can be described as anti-social behaviour. Drivers caught engaging in any activity targeted by the legislation, will have the vehicle(s) involved impounded for 48 hours on the first offense, regardless of the owner(the only exemption is of the car is stolen or hired).

Middle school issues ban on intentional flatulence
The Merriam Webster Dictionary definition for flatulence is brief: "flatus expelled through the anus." And while it's a natural bodily function, it seems some Camden-Rockport Middle School eighth-grade boys are taking it to new heights and making a game of seeing who can expel the loudest and grossest flatus.
Do tell? Junior high school boys blowing farts, is it? Has that ever happened before?
According to this week's Fire Cracker school newsletter though, the joke's on the boys as the penalty for "intentional farting" is now a detention.
Whoa! That really stinks!
"Strange, but true, thanks to a bunch of 8th grade boys, intentional farting has been banned from CRMS," the newsletter said. "It started out as a funny joke and eventually turned into a game. This is the first rule at CRMS that prevents the use of natural bodily functions. The penalty for intentional farting is a detention, so keep it to yourself!"
If you light it, it's two weeks, dammit!
According to a group of seventh-grade students milling around downtown following Friday's storm-related early release, the eighth-graders' escapades are well known in the school. "They would do it in science class and other places," said Jordan Tyler. "It's a natural occurrence and we all do it 16 times a day."
... though after 8th grade we don't usually roll up on one cheek to crack one off.
When questioned where he learned that information, Tyler and the other students all said it was true, though they couldn't remember where they heard it. One of the other students, Kyle Ruger, said the act by the boys was funny, but he had mixed feelings about whether it was appropriate.
When you get older you'll sometimes have mixed feelings about how funny it was, but you'll have no doubt whether it was appropriate.
Jordan Knowlton minced no words when she expressed how she felt, saying, "It's gross."
Pulled his finger, did you, Jordan?
Remy LeVine said he was in the class when CRMS science teacher Brad LaRoche talked to all the eighth-grade boys about the issue, as well as the consequences. Attempts to reach CRMS Principal Maria Libby Friday afternoon were unsuccessful and school Superintendent Patricia Hopkins said she had not heard anything about the issue or the alleged suspected result, though she did get a good chuckle out of the news.

#2  It has always struck me as somewhat strange that some women go to any length not to fart out loud or fart in public. This independent survey extends to my EXs and relatives. It's also cross cultural, hey maybe loud reports are in the DNA!
~:)

Of course nowadays I'm way to considerate to Fart around anyone, even though my Flatus-es are pine-scented springtime-fresh noiseless emissions!

Truth be told it's my extensive LURRP training; It broke me of the Bad habit of ripping Loud MARK V Battle Farts off during combat [firefights].

Rosie O'Donnell: "Bush almost killed me!!!!"
(Emphasis added.)
Isn't that what we do best at Rantburg?
President Bush almost killed me. It's true, and I have the scars to prove it -- multiple scars that are part of the public record -- you saw them in magazines and on my show, and you can see them on my blog frequently -- no twelve year wait required.

It was 2000, and the Republican National Convention was on television. The whole affair felt something like a home invasion, with a chronically smirking and arrogant George W. Bush as ringleader.
"I was trapped, helpless. I groped for the remote, but I could! Not! Change! The channel! (How did Karl Rove reprogram it? Was there nothing he couldn't do?) Desperate, I lunged for the power switch, but it was just out of reach. Damn you, Magnavox--damn you!"
Not wishing to be robbed of my optimism and hope at the time -- or to tumble into depression and despair -- I shut off the TV and decided to go fishing.
(Audience participation segment: as you read the next two paragraphs, bum the theme from Jaws: "Dum-dum dum-dum dum-dum dum-dum DAAAA-DUMP! DAAAA-DUMP! Dum-dum dum-dum dum-dum dum-dum . . .")
I needed gear, so I went to the store and bought a few things, including a knife, which I used to cut the price tags off of the fishing poles.
"Look out! She's got a knife!"
Now, I could have stabbed myself 100 times in the hand and not managed to do the damage I did with that one poke to the inside of my middle finger. I went all out, though, and got everything -- skin, ligaments, tendons, nerves.
(Cue Psycho violins.)
Maximum impact, including a particularly nasty staph infection that almost left me dead.
"The finger I needed to express my defiance of Chimpy McHitlerburton was rendered useless. Later that year, during the Florida hanging chad crisis, I couldn't flip him off when my country really needed me to make a rude public gesture. To this day, I wonder, might one simple 'F-U' have saved Al Gore's campaign, prevented 9/11, stopped global warming?"

That's my personal war story from the demoralizing Bush years, and probably a minor one . . . . Still, it hurt like hell, and the scars and swelling are there as a reminder. I was right to feel repulsed by Bush. . . .
"Oddly, though, I feel empowered by the experience. I want to shout my defiance! Is that all you got? You hear me, you jew-loving heteronormatative goose-stepping-neocon Texas oilman-death beast? Your Mossad assassins with their boobytrapped $9.98 Bass Pro Shops fishing knife couldn't take me down! I'm still here, I'm still a lesbian, and I'm still flippin' you off!"

#9  OK... so let me get this right...

Rosie is so stupid she can't care for a wound, or, even worse, too stupid to realize that a deep wound might need medical attention.

And when it started to turn -- getting red, puffy, and tender -- she didn't have the brains to get medical help then.

*sigh*

I once remarked to my mother that the "flesh-eating virus" scare had more to do with people not properly caring for wounds than with any new organisms. A few weeks later, she pointed out a news story that, yep, doctors were saying that people needed to, oh, wash out cuts, apply antibiotics and bandage them.

Alcatraz to Peace Center
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - San Francisco voters will decide on Tuesday whether to remove the famous Alcatraz Prison visited by thousands of tourists a day and instead create a "global peace center."
Somebody has found another way to waste taxpayer money on a useless project and make a bundle at the same time.
The proposition sharing the presidential primary ballot comes from the director of the California-based Global Peace Foundation who gives his name as Da Vid. He says transforming Alcatraz will "liberate money from the taxpayers energies, raising the whole consciousness of the Bay Area."
Haven't we head from him before? Funny way to spell David. Sounds like he's one toke over the line.
Supporters would like to raze the prison and build a medicine wheel, a labyrinth and a conference center for non-violent conflict resolution. Volunteers collected 10,350 voter signatures last year to put it on the local ballot.
I got an idea! Have a conference when the Center is built and then don't send any boats to take the peaceniks off again. They can live in their own little LA LA Land.
But even in a city long famed for its embrace of counterculture, many are skeptical about he plan.
"Perhaps we haven't reached the proper stage of enlightenment yet, but we're more inclined to support propositions with defined sources of funding attached to them," the San Francisco Chronicle said in an editorial.
In other words, "We're not going to back this as we don't get any money from it".
Alcatraz is San Francisco's second-most popular paid tourist attraction after cable cars, luring 1.4 million visitors annually on a short ferry ride into San Francisco Bay.
Sounds like a Plan. Eliminate a major source of Touroid Money and replace it with a Pipe Dream so everyone can feel good.
To skeptics Da Vid responds: "Like John Lennon, I may be a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."
Sounds more like a Pipe Dreamer. Not into reality.

Damages reduced in Phelps tort case
A federal judge has reduced by more than half the amount of damages that Fred Phelps & 2 of his daughters must pay to the father of a Marine who was killed in Iraq. The judge's ruling cited the need to weigh any harm the father suffered against the financial resources of the church.
Considering financial resources never seems to matter in other tort cases, such as medical malpractice. Why start now?
The hate group church's appeal of the verdict is still pending.

Gore has been openly antagonistic toward the gay community, quoted in the Nashville Tennessean in 1984 saying homosexuality is not "an acceptable alternative that society should affirm." During his 1984 U.S. Senate race, Gore also said he would not accept money from gay rights organizations and that he opposed a "gay bill of rights." He reportedly sought the support of the Phelps family in his 1988 presidential campaign and earlier invited the Phelps' to the Clinton-Gore inaugurations of January 1993 and January 1997.

Fred Phelps, Jr. also ran for Governor of Kansas in the Democratic primary in 1990, winning over 11,000 votes and placing third.

Last Marine in Iwo Jima photo dies at 82
Raymond Jacobs, believed to be the last surviving member of the group of Marines photographed during the original U.S. flag-raising on Iwo Jima during World War II, has died at age 82. Jacobs died Jan. 29 of natural causes at a Redding hospital, his daughter, Nancy Jacobs, told The Associated Press.

Jacobs had spent his later years working to prove that he was the radio operator photographed looking up at an American flag as it was being raised by other Marines on Mount Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945.

Newspaper accounts from the time show he was on the mountain during the initial raising of a smaller American flag, though he had returned to his unit by the time the more famous AP photograph was taken of a second flag-raising later the same day.

The radioman's face isn't fully visible in the first photograph taken of the first flag-raising by Lou Lowery, a photographer for Leatherneck magazine, leading some veterans to question Jacobs' claim. However, other negatives from the same roll of film show the radioman is Jacobs, said retired Col. Walt Ford, editor of Leatherneck.

"It's clearly a front-on face shot of Ray Jacobs," Ford said.

Annette Amerman, a historian with the Marine Corps History Division, said in an e-mailed statement "there are many that believe" Jacobs was the radioman. "However, there are no official records produced at the time that can prove or refute Mr. Jacobs' location."

Jacobs was honorably discharged in 1946. He was called up during the Korean conflict in 1951 before retiring as a sergeant, his daughter said. Jacobs retired in 1992 from KTVU-TV in Oakland, where he worked 34 years as a reporter, anchor and news director.

Unborn twins 'kicked out cancer'
A mother who found she had a tumour while pregnant was saved by her unborn twins' kicking, doctors have said. Michelle Stepney developed a tumour but was only diagnosed with cervical cancer when she was taken to hospital with a suspected miscarriage. But doctors found her twins' kicking had dislodged the tumour.

Mrs Stepney, from Cheam, south-west London, refused to undergo chemotherapy and a hysterectomy which would have meant the termination of her twins.

She has been nominated for a Woman of Courage Award by Cancer Research UK.

"I couldn't believe it when the doctors told me that the babies had dislodged the tumour," she said. "I'd felt them kicking but I didn't realise just how important their kicking would turn out to be."

Mrs Stepney, who also had a five-year-old son called Jack, said she opted to have her life-saving operation after the twins were born. "I owe my life to my girls, and that's why I could have never agreed with a termination," she said. "It was a very difficult decision to make. We wanted to make sure what we did was right by Jack but we did not want to do what was wrong by the girls."

Doctors at the Royal Marsden Hospital gave Mrs Stepney limited chemotherapy.

The twins, Alice and Harriet, were delivered by caesarean section 33 weeks into the pregnancy. They were healthy but born without hair because of the cancer treatment.

Mrs Stepney had a hysterectomy four weeks later, and has been given the all-clear.

She said she had relied on the support of her husband Scott, 36. "I couldn't have got through it without him," she said, adding: "The twins were also a huge support. They kept me strong throughout it all."

Of course it wouldn't happen, but wouldn't it be a hilarious proposal. The old hippies eyes would bleed at the thought, while the yuppie leftists would be having orgasms at the thought of living there with rich celebrities.

Berkeley to Rethink its Declaration Against the Marines
(02-04) 18:52 PST Berkeley — A week after blasting the Marines as "unwelcome intruders" in Berkeley, two city council members want the city to back off the declaration that ignited the wrath of the nation's right wing and inspired a Republican senator to try to sever Berkeley's federal funding.

Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli proposed today that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops. The city council will vote on Olds' and Capitelli's two proposals at its Feb. 12 meeting.

"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."

I got this email today from a third council member who wants to show support for the Marines who is not listed in the above story.

I apologize for not responding earlier. My office has been swamped with
many phone calls and over 1500 emails.

I would note that I was the sole Councilmember who opposed both
anti-marine resolutions. I apologize for the action of the remainder of the
Council. As Christ said "Forgive them for they know not what they do."

I am trying to get the Council to rescind the two anti-Marine
resolutions and issue an apology to the Marines. I would suggest that you and
your friends email the Council and ask that they correct this injustice.

Sincerely,

Gordon Wozniak

And that I will do Gordon. Semper Fidelis!

#1  Doesn't the word rethink imply that something was already thought about at least once before?

"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."

Yeah, it was a mistake not to keep your true feelings to yourself. But hey, maybe some good will become of this in the form of an awareness that Berkeley is not the only place on the planet, and that much of the rest of the country you live in calls it Berserkeley for a reason.

And hopefully the corrective action of your mistake doesn't involve burying your true feelings even deeper.

If you disagree, go put on a burqha and try living in Iran for a week. And for extra credit, try getting away with an extramarital affair. Or even an affair for that matter. Or smoking a bit of weed in front of the religious police there.

#5  I truly think that the DPR Berkley really thought they would make a splash with the measure. After passing it and looking outside their bubble they found the Code Pinkos are NOT very popular east of Highwat 880. I still think the feds should cut off funding for every day this declaration stands. Just to make sure other municipalities don't forget who butters the bread.

#6  In his 1945 "Notes on Nationalism", George Orwell stated that, for the pacifist type of a nationalist, the notion that "those who ‘abjure’ violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf", is impossible to accept.

#9  “…ignited the wrath of the nation's right wing…”

They just don’t get it, do they? They simply can’t grasp the notion that nearly every veteran or active service member, regardless of political persuasion, views this stunt as a slap in the face. Their bong-resin soaked brains are incapable of understanding how that little old widow of a veteran (who btw, hates Bush) could possibly be so appalled by this shit. It is impossible for these kooks to comprehend the effect of their insulting actions and how it cross’s political parities and, indeed, the entire ideological spectrum. Really, no one should be surprised though. This is the district that overwhelmingly re-elected the logically impaired mental midget – Senator Boxer.

They have declared war on the US and its armed forces long enough. Turn off the money and they will fold quickly.

I wouldn't think that Berkeley would be a very good recruiting ground for Marines unless the enlistees just can't stand Berkeley anymore. Berkeley is a disgraceful. Bunch of elitist ignoramuses.

#14  From the tail-end of the article -

Councilwoman Dona Spring said the council should not be cowed by the volume of hate mail and threats.

"I still oppose the Marines recruiting in Berkeley because it's one way of protesting this wasteful war," she said. "Our military policy is a shambles. But we're not in opposition to the Marines; we oppose the policy that directs the Marines."

Meanwhile, the Code Pink protesters said they were disappointed that Berkeley might rescind its letter to the Marines.

"I hope they're not acting out of intimidation," said Code Pink spokeswoman Medea Benjamin. "Berkeley is a city of peace, and a recruiting station does not fit Berkeley's values."

Mayor Tom Bates, a former Army captain, said it probably wouldn't hurt if the council clarified its position.

"It's a symbol, but there are consequences to symbols," he said. "A lot of people think we're anti-Marine, but there's a difference between the warriors and the war. This is an attempt to clarify that."

There's no way my e-mail was hateful or threatening. Ijust told them I resented their slap at folks "sacrificing their todays for your tomorrows," including my son. I don't think anyone responded; I'm from the east left-coast.

#24  I went through college in Berkeley for 4 years 1966-1970. Tried to get to class through tear gas, riots, National Guard, rock throwing, and hippies sending tear gas canisters back with two-person slingshots made from surgical tubing.

I agree with the federal funds cutoff. If the Sh*tty Council thinks that they stand on principle, then put their money where their mouths are and take the consequences.

If the voting citizens of Berkeley like what their representatives do, then they can stand arm-in-arm with their leaders and forgo the Federal Handout. If they are outraged by this action by their representatives, then they can boot the Sh*tty Council out.

If this kind of behavior stands, then Federal Funding becomes just like unconditional handouts to the Paleos, and we know how THAT ONE turned out.
