Scozzafava urges supporters to vote for the Dem

#1  During the day Saturday, she began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens.

I see no direct quotes verifying this - her quote was that she was releasing her supporters. It looks like the Watertown Daily Times is making shit up and backing Owens (although it wouldn't surprise me if the RINO did back teh Dem)

#2  That won't work (whether true or not) since most of the remaining support she did have was among stalwart Republicans. Now they will vote for the conservative.

#3  During the day Saturday, she began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens

I lean toward believing this is true, based on her admitted ideology if nothing else.

#5  This appears to be shaping up as a Dem/Lib writer trying to throw a hit-piece to affect the election. Its apparently a lie, and the writer is couting on the controversy to help Owens, and that after the election it will not matter either way.

Writer expects no consequences for spreading lies and being dishonest. Liberal ethics: ends justify the means.

I say people should impose consequences on this scumbag writer and the editor if things are as confirmed about this writer falsifying the story.

#12  Just remember, Old Spook, the only real consequence a reporter might face in these degenerate times is downsizing in response to declining readership in response to the reporter's shoddy work. That's not direct enough nor quick enough to impact behaviour.

On a separate note, here's a small bottle of Deacon Blues' Devil's Toejam hot sauce, and a depleted uranium plate and fork to eat your words with. Also a glass of milk and some buttered bread to offset the heat... you won't be able to taste the good Scotch until considerably later anyway.

Ethics panel looking at Shuler's role in deal
A document inadvertently made public this week confirms the U.S. House ethics committee is reviewing U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler's role in a land swap involving the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The Washington Post reported Friday that a summary of
The panel is reviewing an allegation of "preferential treatment" against Shuler, a Democrat from Waynesville, N.C.
the secretive panel's activities shows it is reviewing an allegation of "preferential treatment" against Shuler, a Democrat from Waynesville, N.C. Shuler is one of a number of Congress members whose actions are under review by the committee.

The TVA's inspector general investigated the land swap and forwarded his findings to the ethics panel over the summer. The ethics panel, however, doesn't comment publicly on its activities, so the summary obtained by The Post provides the first acknowledgment that the committee is scrutinizing Shuler's actions.

The status of the review is not clear. The summary that was the basis for The Post's report was from July, and the paper said it had not been able to determine why ethics investigators were reviewing the matter or the status of their review.

A spokesman for the ethics panel did not return a phone call Friday.

Shuler's office also did not return calls from the News Sentinel.

The ethics committee's review of Shuler came to light when a document summarizing the panel's investigations into dozens of lawmakers was leaked to The Post after a junior ethics staff member saved the information on the hard drive of a home computer. The staff member, who was fired, had information-sharing software and didn't realize that someone could download the file.

Besides Shuler, other lawmakers under scrutiny include U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y. and chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Ethics investigators interviewed Rangel regarding his personal finances.

Investigators also are looking into the actions of seven members of a subcommittee in charge of defense spending, including the panel's chairman, U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa. The ethics committee is examining the relationship between the seven lawmakers and a now-defunct lobbying firm, the PMA Group.

In Shuler's case, the ethics panel's review concerns a deal involving The Cove at Blackberry Ridge LLC, a development in which Shuler held an ownership.

TVA gave the development water-access rights along Watts Bar Reservoir in Roane County to build a boat dock. In return, the development agreed to relinquish some water-access rights in Rhea County and provide $15,000 for a shoreline bank stabilization project at a different location on Watts Bar Reservoir.

Shuler is formerly a member of the House Transportation Committee's Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment, one of two congressional panels that provide formal oversight of TVA.

A report issued by TVA Inspector General Richard Moore in June said the deal created an inherent conflict of interest, but that there was no evidence the congressman used his position to pressure TVA into providing water access for his firm.

#2  I'm not sure what's going on here. I would like to know who is on the ethics panel. I know Shuler (Dem) doesn't always go along with his party. That probably galls the Obamaistas. My impression is that he is a pretty straight shooter who actually tries to represent his district. I think he voted against the stimulus package robbery.

Paramus man claiming to work for Corzine arrested on drug charges
A Paramus man claiming to work for Gov. Jon Corzine's reelection campaign was arrested Friday night on drug charges after police found Ecstasy tablets in his car, authorities said.
"What're you doing with these, bub?"
"I'm a Democrat."

A Corzine spokeswoman said the man does not work for either the governor's campaign or the Democratic State Committee.
"Never heard of him!"
Jason Shih, 25, was pulled over on Route 17 by East Rutherford police at about 11:30 p.m. last night for talking on his cell phone. Police found 19 Ecstasy tablets and hundreds of small glassine bags used for distributing drugs, police spokesman Capt. William Schanel said.

Schanel said Shih told police he was an official in Corzine's campaign, and several tickets to tomorrow's rally with President Obama at Newark's Prudential Center were found in his car. "As he's exiting the vehicle, he's stating it's not mine," Schanel said. "He just said I'm assistant deputy director of Gov. Corzine's campaign, and they rented this vehicle for my use."

Schanel said the vehicle was rented, but said it is unclear who rented it. He said Shih is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol -- just very nervous. "His hands were shaking," Schanel said.

Corzine campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said Shih's claim is false. "No one has ever heard of this guy," she said.

Campaign finance records do not show any donations from Shih to political candidates in New Jersey.

Economy
Barry creates 640,329 jobs at a cost of 323,739.83 per job.
Inquiring minds are asking the question "How many jobs were created out of the various stimulus programs so far and at what cost per job?"

That is a good question. Not that we can believe the reported number of jobs created, but let's assume for the sake of argument that the figures provided by the administration are correct.

White House Hails Stimulus Jobs

The Financial Times is reporting White House hails 650,000 stimulus jobs.

California Helps Itself to a Bigger Chunk of Everyone's Paychecks
Starting Sunday, cash-strapped California will dig deeper into the pocketbooks of wage earners -- holding back 10% more than it already does in state income taxes just as the biggest shopping season of the year kicks into gear.

Technically, it's not a tax increase,
oh, no, no, heavens, no!
even though it may feel like one when your next paycheck arrives. As part of a bundle of budget patches adopted in the summer, the state is taking more money now in withholding, even though workers' annual tax bills won't change.

Think of it as a forced, interest-free loan: You'll be repaid any extra withholding in April. Those who would receive a refund anyway will receive a larger one, and those who owe taxes will owe less.
"Hoo boy, Mabel, we're gonna git a bigger IOU next April from Ah-nuld!"
From a single taxpayer earning $51,000 a year with no dependents, the state will be grabbing an extra $17.59 each month, according to state tax officials. A married person earning $90,000 with two dependents would receive $24.87 less in monthly pay.

The provision is one of numerous maneuvers state lawmakers and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger approved in the summer to paper over the state's deficit. Many of the changes, including the extra withholding, were little noticed outside of Sacramento.

Savvy taxpayers can get around the state's maneuver by increasing the number of personal withholding allowances they claim on their employer tax forms, said Brenda Voet, a spokeswoman for the state's Franchise Tax Board. "People can get out of this," she said, noting that most people would have to change their allowances through their employers. California's budget leaders are banking on the hope that most won't.

But Stephen Levy, director of the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy, wasn't so sure. "It's having a relatively small impact on people's income," Levy said, pointing out that many families will receive only $12 to $40 less each month.
Ok, Stevie, why dontcha just give me $12 to $40 a month, then? I'm sure you'll hardly notice...especially if I take it out of your check before you get a chance to spend it.
The extra withholding comes in addition to tax hikes the state enacted this year. In February, state income tax rates were bumped up 0.25 of a percentage point for every tax bracket. The dependent credit was slashed by two-thirds. The state sales tax rate rose 1 percentage point. The vehicle license fee nearly doubled to 1.15% of a car's value. Lawmakers and the governor also approved deep cuts to schools, social services and prisons to fend off one of the steepest revenue losses in California history.

Temporary budget bandages, such as the increase in withholding, were included at several points this year to avoid higher taxes and deeper cuts, said H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for the state Department of Finance.
So...California's finances are just peachy now, right? Everything's fixed, I'm sure.
Sacramento, meanwhile, is awash in red ink again. The state controller recently said revenue in the budget year already had fallen more than $1 billion short of assumptions. Outsize deficits are projected for years to come.

#10  These numbers don't seem to make sense.

Isn't the CA tax rate around 8%? At 90K$ per year, that would be roughly $7200 a year. All would be withheld. Ten percent more is $720, per month that would be $60, not $25. Surely the exemptions and standard deductions wouldn't reduce the taxes on 90K that much?

Hundreds rally for lower taxes as part of Tea Party Express
Hundreds rallied for lower taxes and an end to what they said was a socialist agenda in the Obama White House in a parking lot on Sandy Boulevard Friday.

Leaders of the Tea Party Express came to Portland aboard two coaches and found a huge crowd eager to participate.

"No more taxes! No more taxes! No more taxes!" protesters chanted during the rally.

Meghan Youngsman said she feels so strongly about her tax load she dressed in a Confederate uniform dragging balls and chains to symbolize her burden. "It's getting heavier every day," she said.

Portland is just one stop among 38 for the Tea Party Express. It is a tour aimed at exposing what organizers and protesters said is a quasi-socialist agenda by the Obama administration and a tax and spend attitude taxpayers can't keep up with.

"I'll be paying 57 percent combined: Obama plus state next year," said Michael Brodeur who attended the rally.

"Once you're at 70 percent tax rate, you're a slave to the system," said a man from Tualatin who identified himself as Gary.

A small group of counterdemonstrators across the street questioned whether the tea party is really funded by big businesses that already get huge tax breaks in Oregon.

Ad firm suing Grayson
Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) has been served with a lawsuit alleging he failed to pay a $20,000 "win bonus" to a Minnesota advertising firm that worked for his campaign last year, POLITICO has learned.

The lawsuit stems from a disagreement between the Grayson campaign and North Woods Advertising, a firm that has worked for politicians including former Minnesota Governors Jesse Ventura and Paul Wellstone.

When Grayson hired North Woods to help promote his campaign last year he promised them a $20,00 bonus if he emerged victorious in Florida's eighth congressional district.
Both sides agree that when Grayson hired North Woods to help promote his campaign last year, he promised them a $20,000 payment -- commonly referred to as a win bonus -- if he emerged victorious in Florida's eighth congressional district.

Grayson won the campaign and was elected to his first term in Congress -- but never paid North Woods the $20,000 win bonus, both sides acknowledge. More than a year later, North Woods has filed suit against Grayson to collect the bonus, and another $50,000 for breach of contract, since Grayson's campaign hired another advertising firm late in the campaign, allegedly violating an exclusivity clause in the North Woods contract.

Grayson chief of staff Julie Tagen said that the bonus wasn't paid because North Woods owes the campaign a refund for advertisements that were purchased but never ran on television.

North Woods "massively overcharged us for everything -- the most blatant thing was they never gave us a refund for ad-buys that didn't run," Tagen told POLITICO. "They wouldn't send us a refund check -- which is unheard of -- and that's what this all stems from. We've told them repeatedly: When they send us our refund, we'll give them their win bonus."

But Vaughn Juares, business manager and creative director of North Woods, said that all of Grayson's advertisements ran -- meaning no refund was given to them from the TV station -- and that they had already sent Grayson evidence proving just that.

Rudy, Daggett in T'pike tussle
After jumping into the New Jersey governor's race to support Republican Chris Christie, Rudy Giuliani yesterday got in a war of words with the independent challenger -- whom the former mayor blasted as that "third-party candidate who nobody should vote for."

In the final leg of the hotly contested Garden State race -- in which Christie and Jon Corzine are neck and neck, according to a new poll yesterday -- Giuliani told a crowd of Christie supporters that Chris Daggett "had no chance of winning."

For his part, Daggett wants Rudy to stay on his side of the Hudson. "I'd ask him to withdraw from New Jersey," Daggett said yesterday, following a Post report in which Giuliani was quoted calling on the independent to drop out. "I don't know why he's coming into New Jersey and trying to tell us how to run our state."

At a Christie rally in Bergen County, Giuliani just laughed at the suggestion that he should butt out.

"I feel very welcome here. I understand one of your candidates told me to go home," he said. "Nobody should vote for him, there's no chance of winning."

A poll yesterday from Farleigh Dickinson University had Daggett at 6 percent, while Corzine and Christie -- at 44 percent and 43 percent -- were locked in a virtual tie. Experts believe most of Daggett's support would go to Christie if the independent wasn't in the race.

Giuliani urged voters to back Christie, a former US attorney like himself and a fiscal conservative. "If you want to get rid of Jon Corzine, you should vote for Chris Christie," he said.

Giuliani compared the plight of New Jersey -- saddled with high unemployment and massive taxes -- to that of New York City's when he took office in 1993.

"You need a governor who understands what I understood when I became mayor of New York City. You have to cut spending, you have to cut taxes, you have to give money back to people so they can spend it," he said.

Meanwhile, Christie, who is being outspent 3 to 1 by the multimillionaire Corzine, said the negative campaign ads have taken their toll.

"After watching $25 million worth of ads on TV, I might not even vote for me," he said. "I don't recognize myself."

He is not fazed by the parade of Democratic heavy hitters -- which includes former President Bill Clinton and President Obama, who tomorrow will pay his third Jersey visit -- that Corzine has brought out in the final days of the campaign.

"This is the Jon Corzine 'Please save me from myself' tour," Christie said. "He wants to run everyone in here that he can so people forget he's the one that's actually on the ballot."

Gingrich endorses Hoffman
(CNN)-- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who came under fire from some conservatives for endorsing Dede Scozzafava in next week's special Congressional election in New York, is now backing Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.

"Scozzafava dropping out leaves hoffman as only anti-tax anti-pelosi vote in ny 23 Every voter opposed to tax increases support doug hoffman," Gingrich wrote on Twitter.

Alan Grayson: Fox News is stalking me
Rep. Alan Grayson, the Florida Democratic congressman who made headlines recently with his provocative partisan comments, told supporters Friday he's being stalked by FOX News.

In a fundraising email sent out by his campaign, Grayson said FOX News is ambushing him because he's a "strong voice for justice" but that he won't be taken down by the cable news network's "weapons of mass distraction."

The confrontation that sparked the note involved FOX News correspondent Griff Jenkins, who approached the freshman congressman outside his Capitol Hill office Wednesday and repeatedly asked Grayson what he meant when he called Federal Reserve adviser Linda Robertson a "K Street whore" and whether he would apologize to Vice President Cheney for saying "blood drips from his teeth when he speaks."

Jenkins also asked Grayson for his reaction to New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner's quote in POLITICO referring to the combative congressman "one fry short of a Happy Meal."

Grayson declined to respond to the questions, telling Jenkins several times that he would have to make an appointment with his press secretary, and accused him of "violating the rules."

"Do you know what it means to make an appointment, sir? Do you know what that means?" Grayson asked. "I'm asking you to do what every other reputable news source does, which is to make an appointment... Why don't you make an appointment and follow the rules everyone else follows -- except FOX."

FOX's Bill O'Reilly, host of the top-rated cable news show, aired the footage of Grayson on his program Wednesday evening, and interviewed Jenkins about the incident. Jenkins said Grayson called the police as he waited outside the congressman's office for an interview. "You could hear, audibly standing in the hallways, the congressman at a shouting level saying, 'Why won't these people leave! Why can't you make them go away!' And the police officer saying, 'Sir, they have a right to be there. The hallways are public,'" Jenkins told O'Reilly.

Grayson said the episode was an effort to bully him and used it to criticize the Republican Party, which he ridiculed in September for having health care plans that amounted to a prescription for Americans to "die quickly."

"On Wednesday, Fox News's professional stalker Griff Jenkins stalked me all day, and then ambushed me, just so he could get some footage of me asking him to make an appointment," Grayson wrote to his supporters.

"And sure enough, Bill O'Reilly put that footage on the air, and I was deluged with angry phone calls from Republican voters who think it's my job to be at Fox's beck and call. This is not surprising. The Republican Party is a now a wholly owned subsidiary of Fox News. Well, I won't be taken down by Fox's weapons of mass distraction."

The e-mail also accused FOX of having a "news blackout on everything but fake tea protests and ambushes in the halls of Congress. Enough is Enough."

Hoffman: 'I will reach out to Scozzafava'
With liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava suspending her campaign in New York's 23rd congressional district, Conservative party candidate Doug Hoffman tells NRO that he will reach out to her in the campaign's final days in order to bring conservative voters together to defeat Democrat Bill Owens. "I'm certainly going to extend my best wishes to her," says Hoffman.
"The assemblywoman made a very difficult decision for the good of the Republican party. I hope to reach out to her by the end of the day and thank her for making this decision."
"The assemblywoman made a very difficult decision for the good of the Republican party. I hope to reach out to her by the end of the day and thank her for making this decision. It's important for her supporters to know that I'm the conservative Republican in this race. We all need to make sure that we don't have my Democratic opponent going to Washington."

Hoffman says that he hopes that both the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) and the New York State Republican Party will throw their weight behind him as soon as possible.

"I'm overwhelmed that Republican leaders in the House want me to caucus with them," says Hoffman. Now, he says, is time for Republicans to also help support him with advertising, since he says that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is pouring thousands into Owens's coffers.

Turnout on Tuesday, says Hoffman, will be crucial to whether he wins. "I need Dede supporters to know how important it is to go out and cast their vote on November 3rd," he says. "The Democrats are pumping over $1 million in negative ads against me this week, with the help of the Working Families Party and ACORN. They're sending in ground troops to take this away from the Republicans. It's important for both my supporters and Scozzafava supporters to know that if they vote for me, they're voting for less taxes and less spending. If they don't vote for me, that means that they want someone who will be working hand in hand with Nancy Pelosi in Washington."

"We're still fighting," says Hoffman. "We're still the underdog."

Thinking toward the future, Hoffman says that if he wins, he will "work very closely" with Scozzafava "as she represents the constituents of her district."

Republicans rally as Virginians turn against Obama
Nancy Breeden was not sucked in by the euphoria that swept Barack Obama to power and landed him the first victory by a Democratic presidential contender in Virginia in more than four decades.

"I was going to vote for John McCain but it terrified me that if anything happened to him we would have this totally ignorant woman as president. So I voted for Obama as the lesser of two evils," said the 77-year-old, as she half-watched the news on a television larger than almost anything else in her living room.

"It's turned out exactly as I expected. The man has absolutely no experience. I'm disillusioned with him about everything. His healthcare plan is a disaster. He doesn't know how to deal with the rest of the world."

Breeden is voting Republican in next week's election for governor of Virginia. Opinion polls suggest voters will resoundingly reject Obama's candidate in favour of a man who once blasted working women and feminism as the biggest threat to the family, opposed contraception for unmarried couples, and questioned the constitutional separation of church and state.

The Republicans are portraying the Virginia governor's race as a referendum on Obama after nine months in power, and the Democrats' looming loss of the governorship as evidence of deepening disillusionment with the president.

The Democrats, sensing a significant defeat, are shifting responsibility for that on to the cyclical nature of Virginia politics and a poor candidate who failed to make sufficient use of the party's greatest asset -- Obama.

In reality, the result will reflect the divide over the role of government and the uniqueness of Obama's election. Democratic campaign managers acknowledge that it is almost impossible to inject the same energy that gripped the presidential race, with its unprecedented turnout.

But the Virginia contest has also seen a re-energised Republican party emerge which, despite a lack of focused leadership and a coherent national platform, has tapped in to a resurgent anger among many conservative voters.

"It's a good feeling to have the wind at our backs," said Corry Bliss, a Republican campaign manager in Virginia. "Being a Republican was tough when we had the Bush factor. Now there's a bit of buyer's remorse [over Obama]. I think he is still personally popular, but his policies are unpopular. People are worried about the economy. People are asking: 'What does healthcare reform mean for me?' "

Obama pulled off a 7% swing to the Democrats in Virginia in last year's election, the first time the party has taken the state in a presidential race since 1964. He did particularly well in the north of the state, which is largely a commuter suburb of Washington. However, he did poorly among white males in the rest of Virginia, where conservative views on government, guns and abortion prevail.

Among the districts to flip over to Obama was Prince William County, which sits on the dividing line between the old Virginia and the growing liberal colony in the north. George Bush won the county in both his election victories. Last year, Obama took the county seat, Manassas, with 57% of the vote. Breeden's was one of them.

About the (fascist) theory that democracy is two idiots counting more than a wise guy problme is: who is determining who is the wise guy? Do you think for instance that those journalists of CNN are wise guys. I also remind you that because the majority is not everytime wise or virtuous, Aherica is not a democracy but a Republic.

In one thing however I thin we could agree: efforts to bring out the vote should be bannned: not only because some of the orgabnizations who do it are not neutral but because it leads people who are not interested in politics and have in vested zero time on knowing what is all about to vote like those gazillions of Obama v voters who thought the Republican party controlled the Congress.
