When Oompa Loompas Go Bad
A California actor who has had several minor film and television roles has been arrested in Scottsdale on suspicion of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl.

Scottsdale Police said 36-year-old Jonathan Simanton was staying with family Tuesday when he allegedly fondled his nephew's teenage babysitter.

According to investigators, Simanton admitted to touching the victim inappropriately. They also said there were indications he was under the influence at the time of the incident.

He was booked on $4,500 bail in a Maricopa County, Ariz., jail.

Simanton is a little person who played an elf in "Surviving Christmas" and an Oompa Loompa in "Epic Movie." The 3 foot 6 inch Simanton also appeared in "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie," and on TV in "Reno 911" and "The King of Queens."

Golf Course Crew Finds Skull in Fairway
Mundelein, Ill. (AP) --
Golf course workers uncovering the tees for the season discovered a human skull at a suburban Chicago club and found bones nearby in the fairway, authorities said.
The skull was spotted Monday near the 14th tee of the Prairie Course, one of two 18-hole courses at the Countryside Golf Club in Mundelein, according to Lake County Forest Preserve Police Chief John Galford.
"It was laying there, right in the middle of the fairway," Galford said.
Is that considered a Fairway Hazzard?
He said the identity and gender of the person had not been determined, but the skull had some distinguishing marks: a partial set of dentures, two of the teeth are gold, some of the teeth have a star pattern on them, and one of the front teeth has a golden "R" on it.
A forensic dentist planned to examine the skull and bones Tuesday, said Lake County Coroner Richard Keller. He said investigators would go through police records and missing-persons reports.
Probably waiting for his partner to put out.

Trio Suspected of Staging Panty Raid
Jersey City, N.J. (AP) --
Police were trying to pick up the trail of three people suspected of staging a panty raid this week at a Victoria's Secret in Newport Center Mall.
I do hope they won't be used to "torture" Jihadis.
The trio — two men and a woman — were able to thwart security sensors at the store because they used shopping bags lined with aluminum foil, known as "booster bags," police said.
Oh, a Menaige a Tois! I always put the aluminium foil in my hat, but what do I know. I'm such a Rube.
A security camera at the store caught the heist, but not before the trio grabbed dozens of bras and women's panties from two display tables.
I'm allergic to Victoria's Secret. Every time I go in there my heart starts racing and my breath comes in short, sharp pants.
The Tuesday night heist netted nearly $12,000 in undergarments: $4,905 in bras and $6,821 in women's panties.
I told yall last Christmas those things are expensive. I was just looking for something to hang on the mantle, in a size 36D, in hopes Santa Claus would fill it. To heck with the stocking.
"That's a lot of underwear," police Lt. Edgar Martinez told The New York Times for Thursday newspapers.

Sweden and Cuba in a war of words.
Your Mama...!

Cuban authorities have expressed growing irritation with Sweden and Foreign Minister Carl Bildt. The Swedish ambassador in Havana was called in on Thursday to listen to the Cubans' opinion with regard to the recent bickering.

The row began when Carl Bildt gave a speech to the UN's Human Rights Council in which he criticized Cuba for its poor human rights record.

The Cuban UN ambassador responded by accusing Sweden of having a blood-stained, imperialist past that involved elements of ethnic cleansing.

Following the ambassador's outburst, Sweden demanded an explanation and an apology from the Cuban ambassador to Sweden.

But Sweden received nothing like an apology when the Swedish ambassador in Havana was called in for a briefing.

Instead, Cuban authorities expressed great annoyance with the importance attributed to the dispute. Sweden had caused the incident to escalate, according to the Cubans, who added that it was a clear exaggeration to refer to the spat as a diplomatic crisis.

Apart from the war of words, Sweden has also accused Cuban officials of opening Swedish diplomatic post. The Swedish foreign ministry has called on its Cuban counterpart to provide an explanation, which has not yet been forthcoming.

The European Union has expressed its support for Sweden in the ongoing dispute. Relations between Cuba and the EU are frosty and a spokesman for the EU Commission said that the entire Union shared Sweden's concern for human rights in Cuba.

Man kills guest for disliking mum's food
Bhopal: A villager in Madhya Pradesh killed his guest because he did not like the food his mother had cooked. The victim's body, bearing injury marks inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon, was found by police on Thursday in the fields of Phanda village, on the outskirts of Bhopal. Police traced and arrested Ramesh, the owner of the axe used in the killing. He later confessed to having killed the victim, who is still to be identified as his face was disfigured.

"Ramesh, after sustained interrogation, confessed to having killed the victim. While having dinner the victim apparently refused to eat as he didn't like the taste of the food, which had been cooked by Ramesh's mother. Ramesh attacked him with an axe, resulting in his death," police said.

#3  To hell with the food, just give me the pan shown in that picture. You're looking at a uranium orange porcelain enamel glazed cast iron oval au gratin baking pan made by either Le Creuset or Descoware. These pans are heirloom quality and one of the few objects that are worth their price brand new.

I have about a dozen of the au gratin pans in various sizes ranging from individual 6" ovals to larger pieces. I hunt them in thrift shops and pay pennies on the dollar at the cash register. My collection of over 100 pieces ranges from skillets to terrines to butter warmers and even the hard to find teapot and fondue set. Purchased new, the entire group would cost several thousand dollars. Once you get used to cooking with enamel ware there's no going back. Only well-seasoned cast iron can even hold a candle to the stuff.

Sidebar: The very oldest pans can be identified by using a Geiger counter due to how actual uranium was used to create the orange glaze. The background count is low but detectable. Now other minerals are used to create the classic flame orange color. The pan pictured is an older model. The gray interior glaze is testimony to that fact. More recent models will have a white glazed lining.

Of course, I also collect cast iron and have almost 100 pieces of it as well including rare square skillets, griddles, Dutch ovens, stovetop waffle irons and such. The crown jewel is a miniature cast iron stove a few inches tall, complete with flat irons and working oven door. Not a toy, this is a sample that was once carried around by a traveling salesmen who could not possibly tote along several tons of various stoves. Original examples of this sort in complete condition can fetch hundreds of dollars. Mine is only missing its stove pipe and set me back all of $15.00 at the flea market. (Yes, I wore a mask.)

#10  Le Creuset, the stuff of wedding gift dreams and housekeeping nightmares. I remember drooling over a set in my bridal days, but we had such a small wedding that I didn't even bother registering anywhere. Later I tried picking up a couple of the pans and realized how lucky I'd been -- those things are heavy!! and if I'd had those, I'd never have been able to justify the expense of replacing them with something I can actually handle on a daily basis. For perspective, I was a rather poor gymnast in my youth, so even yet have considerably more upper body strength than most women. You continue your collecting with my blessing, Zenster dear -- it's good that somebody appreciates the pretty things properly... and has the muscles to use them.

Housewife convicted of frying husband
A Brazilian housewife was convicted and sentenced to 19 years in prison Friday for killing her husband, chopping his corpse into small pieces and frying it. Rosanita Nery dos Santos, 52, was sentenced by Judge Casio Miranda in northeastern Bahia state after a 15-member jury found her guilty of killing retired police officer Jose Raimundo Soares dos Santos, court spokesman Francisco Ribeiro said.

Authorities said the killing occurred almost two years ago in Vila Sao Cosme, a lower middle-class neighborhood in the Bahia state capital of Salvador, 930 miles northeast of Sao Paulo. "On June 23, 2005, Rosanita Nery dos Santos drugged her husband and stabbed him to death while he slept," Idmar Bonfim, a spokesman for the Salvador Civil Police Department said. "She then hacked his body into more than 100 pieces, which she boiled and fried before hiding them in plastic bags underneath the staircase of her house."

He said police discovered the body parts after receiving an anonymous phone call. Bonfim said the killing was either part of a black magic ritual or an attempt "to get her hands on his life insurance money worth about 70,000 reals ($34,000)."

Citing testimony from the woman's relatives, he said she may have committed the crime "to avenge many years of humiliation from her husband." He did not provide further details.

Santos denied killing her husband but said she chopped up his body, Bonfim said. "She claims masked assailants entered her house, killed her husband and then forced her to cut up the body and fry it because that would prevent the stench of a decomposing body from alerting neighbors."
Oh, sure. Masked intruders. Forced her to chop him in little pieces and fry him up. I can believe that. Happened to me just a coupla weeks ago, in fact. That's what happened to my cat.

Arabia
Saudi tourist sentenced for trying to molest a 3-year-old
SACRAMENTO (AP) - A tourist from Saudi Arabia was sentenced today to seven years in federal prison after he traveled to California thinking he was about to molest a 3-year-old girl.

Nabil Al Rowais arranged the trip during nine months of e-mail correspondence with a man he thought was the girl's father.

He flew to San Francisco in April and traveled to a Vallejo hotel. There he was arrested by an undercover agent posing as the girl's father. The girl herself doesn't exist.

He pleaded guilty in January to traveling to the United States intending to have sex with a minor.

Prosecutors say he is likely to be deported after completing his prison term.

Europe
Statues to Samantha Fox, Sly Stallone,
Posted by: Anonymoose || 03/24/2007 20:43 || Comments || Link || [3 views] Top|| File under:

#1  (, "and a cabbage")

A LIFE-SIZE marble statue of the former glamour model Samantha Fox is to be erected in Serbia after she agreed to sing at a pop festival.

Locals in the southern Serb town of Cacak raised the money to show the 1980s model turned pop star how delighted they are about her visit. Obrad Banovic, a fan, said: "We love her. She is an authentic sex symbol of the 1980s, so why shouldn't we have a monument to her. Other towns have their heroes in parks, so why can't we?

"We are also aware that her most famous attributes may require special treatment, so we are planning on using the best quality marble only."

The idea for the statue came after Fox agreed to take part in a music festival in Cacak next month.

It won't be the only celebrity statue in the area. The northern Serbian village of Zitiste is putting up a statue of the Hollywood film character Rocky, as played by Sylvester Stallone.

The Bosnian town of Mostar, which is divided along ethnic lines, erected a statue of the late martial arts film star Bruce Lee in 2005 as a symbol of unity between Muslims and Croats.

And the eastern Bosnian town of Bijelina, the scene of some of the most vicious ethnic cleansing during the 1992-95 wars, is to erect a huge bronze statue of the town's most famous produce - a cabbage.

Other eastern European countries have adopted eccentric cultural icons. Norman Wisdom is a star in Albania and was the only western actor whose films were allowed during the Communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha.

#1  Scientists are all set to test 'Dhanush', the nuclear-capable naval version of the 'Prithvi' short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) and an air-to-air 'Astra' missile from the Chandipur defence base in the state's coastal district of Balasore, some 230 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar, defence sources said.

Astra is being considered as a new system in India's guided missile development programme. With solid propellant, the missile has a striking range of 25 to 40 kilometres.

While Dhanush is likely to be test-fired Sunday, about four rounds of Astra missile will be tested March 26 and 27, the sources said.

'The Dhanush missile will be tested inside the Bay of Bengal from a ship - INS Rajput positioned nearly 60 km from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur and Paradip coast.

The Astra missile will be test-fired from launching complex no. II (LC-II) of the ITR,' the sources told IANS.

Dhanush, developed and built by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has a 250-km striking range and can carry single warhead up to 750 kg.

The missile, which is a part of India's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), is about 8.53 metres long and 0.9 metre wide besides its launch weight about 4.4 tonnes. It uses liquid propellant.

Scientists have planned to test two variants of the 'Dhanush'. While one will have a striking range of 250 km, the other will be able to hit targets 500 km away.

Similarly, the Astra missile also has been developed by the DRDO. The goal of this test-firing is to provide the Indian Air Force (IAF) with a beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) to equip the IAF's Mirage 2000, MiG-29, Su-30MKI and the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).

Woman councillor beaten in Daska
DASKA: Five men attacked a woman member of the Sialkot District Council and allegedly tortured her and cut her braid as ‘punishment’ for refusing to engage in “illicit relations” with one of them in Bambaanwala village, Daska tehsil on Friday.

According to the first information report (FIR) registered in the case, Abdul Manaan, Abdul Rehman, Irfan, Aamir and Sardar forced their way into Bushra Rafiq’s home, dragged her out in the courtyard and started beating her. Bushra’s mother was also beaten when she tried to save her daughter. The accused cut Bushra’s hair before fleeing. Both women are now being treated at Daska Tehsil Headquarters Civil Hospital, where their condition is stated to be out of danger.

Bushra told police that she was attacked after she refused to have “illicit” relations” with Irfan, adding that the accused had earlier threatened her and her family. Bambaanwala police are investigating the incident and have made no arrest so far.

Bishop calls for inquiry after nuns are photographed at blackjack table
A Catholic bishop has called for an inquiry of four nuns allegedly photographed tinkering with slot machines and playing black jack, a card game, during the launch of a gaming complex along Manila's Roxas Boulevard. "I have called on the Catholic Bishop Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) for an investigation of the four nuns who belong to the Servants of the Holy Eucharist Order," said Archbishop Oscar Cruz. "I was told that they just tinkered with the slot machines. They were curious. They also sat at tables for black jack. They were not gambling, but the photographs and the TV footages that showed them at the launch of a proposed-gaming complex were shameful," said Archbishop Cruz.

"The photos caused a big harm to a point that it has scandalised the Catholic Church," the Archbishop fumed. Bishop Antonio Tobias, a known critic of President Gloria Arroyo, accompanied the four nuns. "I don't know why they were there in the first place," Cruz said. Hinting the future of the allegedly erring nuns, Cruz said the CBCP had excommunicated and defrocked a priest who was proven to have gambled in a casino in the province. "The Catholic Church strictly prohibits men of the cloth, and nuns, from gambling. The CBCP has issued a pastoral statement in 2004, that all forms of gambling, whether legal or illegal," he explained.

In response, Edward King, spokesman of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, which is behind the project, said, "The sisters played but they did not bet on their money."

A gambling nun is praying for her fourth Grand National success in a row.

Sister Rita Dawson's winning habit makes her one of the luckiest Grand National punters in the UK.

Now Sister Rita, chief executive of St Margaret's Hospice in Clydebank, near Glasgow is hoping for further success so she can raise thousands of pounds for the centre.

The nun, part of the Sisters of Charity order, has won on the last three Grand Nationals at cumulative odds of 7,865/1.

She plans on betting on Gunner Welburn - who has odds of 12/1 - in this year's race and has been handed a £1,000 free charity bet by bookmakers Ladbrokes.

Sister Rita, originally from Tipperary in Ireland, is trying to raise £1.6m for the hospice which cares for the terminally ill and the frail elderly.

She makes her yearly Grand National selections after calling her brother in Ireland for his advice.

Sister Rita said: "I have a chat with my brother who narrows the field down for me. Then something strikes me and I go for one horse."

Home Front: Culture Wars
New Orleans Residents Arm Themselves
Sixty-four-year-old Vivian Westerman rode out Hurricane Katrina in her 19th-century house. So terrible was the experience that she wanted two things before the 2006 season arrived: a backup power source and a gun. "I got a 6,000-watt generator and the cutest little Smith & Wesson, snub-nose .38 you ever saw," she boasted. "I've never been more confident." People across New Orleans are arming themselves - not only against the possibility of another storm bringing anarchy, but against the violence that has engulfed the metropolitan area in the 19 months since Katrina, making New Orleans the nation's murder capital.

The number of permits issued to carry concealed weapons is running twice as high as it was before Katrina - this, in a city with only about half its pre-storm population of around 450,000. Attendance at firearms classes and hours logged at shooting ranges also are up, according to the gun industry. Gun dealers who saw sales shoot up during the chaotic few months after Katrina say that sales are still brisk, and that the customers are a cross-section of the population - doctors, lawyers, bankers, artists, laborers, stay-at-home moms.

Citizens, the tourism industry, police and politicians officials have been alarmed by the wave of killings in New Orleans, with 162 in 2006 and 37 so far this year. A Tulane University study put the city's 2006 homicide rate at 96 slayings per 100,000 people, the highest in the nation.

National Guardsmen and state police are patrolling the streets of New Orleans. In neighboring Jefferson Parish, which posted a record 66 homicides in 2006, the sheriff sent armored vehicles to protect high-crime neighborhoods. In New Orleans, police have accused the district attorney of failing to prosecute many suspects. Prosecutors have accused the police of not bringing them solid cases.

Just how many guns are out there is anybody's guess. Gun buyers in Louisiana are not required to register their weapon or obtain a concealed-carry permit if they keep the gun in their house or car. In a measure of how dangerous New Orleans is becoming, guns are finding their way into criminal hands at an alarming rate. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' "time-to-crime" analysis of the interval between the legal sale of a gun and the time it is seized in a crime investigation is five years on average around the nation, said ATF spokesman Austin Banks. In New Orleans, time-to-crime is six months, he said. This sometimes happens because of "straw purchases," in which a buyer obtains a gun for someone not legally eligible to purchase one. Many guns also are stolen from homes and cars.

While many are buying guns for protection, only two defensive killings of criminals by civilians took place in New Orleans in 2006, according to police. No charges were filed against the shooters.

Terrorist or Loser Looking for his Ten Minutes of Fame?
The passengers quarantined at Charlotte Douglas International Airport for four hours Friday afternoon have been released, according to a U.S. Airways spokesperson.

The 112 passengers and four crew members were cleared to leave the plane at around 7:30 p.m., after being detained because a fellow passenger on the flight from New Orleans claimed to have smallpox.

The passenger was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for testing, and the results were negative, CMC spokesman Scott White said.

As Flight 1014 was landing in Charlotte, the passenger allegedly shouted that he had exposed everyone to smallpox. The airline is now backing off initial reports that he was intoxicated.

The health department authorized local paramedics to take that person off the flight to be tested. Meanwhile, under federal guidelines, all the passengers had to stay put until the threat could be confirmed or proven false.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the Mecklenburg County Health Department, and U.S. Airways officials responded to the scene shortly after the plane landed around 3:30 p.m. From AirStar6, Medic employees in personal protective gear could be seen wheeling a stretcher with the passenger to an ambulance, which transported him to CMC for testing.

#2  Insane to believe anyone has smallpox. Even more insane to live in a society that reacts to give this kind of claim any kind of credibility whatsoever! Just arrest him and put him away for a few years in a small cell and be done with it.

#3  whatever happened to the good old days, when you could walk this asshole at gunpoint to the woods, make him dig his grave, and shoot him? Society shouldn't have to bear the costs of feeding or sheltering him in prison

Sadly, they went away. That is why we have a lot of the problems we have now. But, I believe that the time honored practices return is just around the corner.

#7  The airline is now backing off initial reports that he was intoxicated.

That was what I saw originally. But why would anyone think of claiming a smallpox infection -- that isn't the kind of thing ordinary folk think about sober, let alone under the influence. Definitely more to this story. Imprison him until all has been revealed.
Posted by: trailing wife || 03/24/2007 13:06 Comments || Top||

#8  Far too gentle. I suggest placing the individual under strict medical quarantine to undergo all sorts of *interesting* medical tests to determine if he, indeed, has been exposed to or is carrying smallpox.

To start with, all the hair should be removed from his body to insure the quarantine facilities maintain maximum sanitation. Then the entire contents of his bowels should be evacuated with a throat drip of 1 gallon of citrate of magnesium over the course of several hours.

This will leave him in good condition for both his oral and rectal endoscopy. Then he will receive his cystoscope examination of his urinary tract and bladder.

If a clear determination of smallpox has not yet been reached beyond any doubt, then he should be given spectrum antibiotics, anti-fungals and antivirals to eliminate all microorganisms in his body. This should be accompanied by a chemical scrub of his skin and orifices to remove skin microorganisms.

From this point, he should be on a strict dietary regimen of high fiber and low fat food. Blood samples should be taken at frequent intervals to determine if any latent conditions exist.

Samples of his lymph and spinal fluid are also essential to insure that no meningitis or immunological response is ongoing.

I figure after this, and maybe some more specialized diagnosis, he should be free to go and face whatever criminal charges are pending.
