...I have a VERY bad feeling about this. The Russians created the concept of the 'Potemkin (FILL IN THE BLANK)', and it ALWAYS comes around to bite them in the ass. If the military has been telling Putin that everything's fine, and it's not, they've got two options - defeat or doubling down.

Joe Biden was a fool in the prime of his life and now he is a feeble old fool who suffers from cognitive decline or dementia or whatever you speculate it might be. Sorry, but he is not up to the job. OK, I just watched the video at the Daily Mail site in which Putin says NATO nations are threatening him so that he must put his nuclear deterrence on high alert.
That is pure bullshit. We will not be the first to use nuclear weapons and Putin has just forfeited all of the sympathy that many of us had for him. Many of us now believe that Putin has been in power for much too long now and it is time for some patriotic Russian who is in a more stable state of mind to take the helm.
But I think I see another problem. As I watched the video and read the subtitles I realized that, compared to the time it took me to read the subtitles, it was taking Putin a long time to say what he was saying in Russian. I would read the subtitle and then wait and wait and wait for the next subtitle. Believe me, I'm not a speed reader.
Ask yourself, compared to the number of syllables in the English language subtitles, how many syllables does the Russian language take to say the same thing?
The problem may be that your language is too cumbersome and it takes an extraordinary length of time to express your thoughts. I can't help wondering if, when you have to actually think in Russian, does it takes as long to think as it does to speak? This must be extremely difficult for you. My sympathy.

Apparently this thing started with the troops being told it was only a training exercise — repeated videos show their shock at be yelled at for invading by the populace.

Keep in mind, as the Biden team were getting pummeled for negative economic outcomes, massive inflation, skyrocketing energy costs and gas prices set to double, the White House worked to create an urgent defense by manufacturing the crisis.
While Joe Biden ate his pudding, the people behind the scenes told Zelenskyy and Putin that Ukraine was about to enter NATO {December 2021}. The White House then seeded details through China knowing the intel would get back to Putin. Russia took the bait and intervened.

I blame Clinton and the idiots that came after him. Instead of throwing a party and disbanding NATO after the Soviet Union fell and trying to establish ties with Russia, they pushed NATO right up to the border of a very paranoid and humiliated nation and sought to punish them.

Zelensky is in Belarus for peace talks. You can still tell him to accept partition - Russia now dominates the east and south and has secured their land bridge to Crimea. Zelensky is still alive and his big cities have not yet been leveled. And you could threaten Putin with a real stick - a thermonuclear strike unless he accepts the deal MF pulls back to the Novorossia line.

Russia on Friday summoned Israel’s Ambassador to Moscow Alexander Ben Zvi to clarify Israel’s position regarding the Ukraine invasion a day after Foreign Minister Yair Lapid called the incursion a "grave violation of international order."
As Russia attacks Ukraine, Israel has avoided taking a stance aligned too closely with either side. This is believed to be at least partly due to its need to work with the Russian military presence in neighboring Syria.
Israel has expressed concern regarding the invasion and offered humanitarian aid to the Ukrainian people, but Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has avoided condemning Russia or even mentioning the country by name in his statements since the launching of the widespread military operation across Russia’s border early Thursday morning.

[Dawn] The Chaman-Spin Buldak border between Pakistain and Afghanistan, which was closed after festivities between the two countries’ forces began last week, was reopened on Sunday morning.
All hurdles have been removed from both sides of the Friendship Gate on the border.
The border was reopened after a delegation of Learned Elders of Islam from Chaman headed by tribal elder Molvi Haji Faizullah Nourzai held negotiations with Kandahar Governor Yusef Wafa and other Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... leaders.
Sources said that the Learned Elders of Islam delegation also remained in contact with senior Pak officials during their talks with Afghan officials.
"Our negotiation remained fruitful and resulted in opening of the border," Mufti Mohammad Qasim, front man for the Ulema delegation, said.
He said the delegation conveyed a message of goodwill from Pak authorities to the Kandahar governor and other Taliban leaders.
He said the people involved in trade from both sides were facing financial losses due to the closure of the bother.
According to Mufti Qasim, "both sides regretted the festivities which caused loss of lives from both sides".
He said a flag meeting between border officials from both sides is expected in a couple of days to resolve the issue which caused the festivities. Direct talks between bigwigs of the two countries would help in reducing tension in border areas on both sides, he added.

The oil giant had come under pressure from the UK government to make the move since Thursday's invasion.

BP chief executive Bernard Looney has resigned "with immediate effect" from the Rosneft board, as has fellow BP-nominated director Bob Dudley.
Rosneft said thirty years of successful cooperation had been ruined and blamed BP's decision on "unprecedented political pressure", according to reports from Russian news agencies.

ALEPPO NORTHERN COUNTRYSIDE, Syria (North Press) – The Turkish-backed Military Police arrested yesterday a civilian of Afrin region in Aleppo northern countryside, north Syria.

Had Putin rolled into Luhansk and Donbass, and stopped with a wider DMZ around them, that likely would have been nothing from the West on this other than some weak sanctions. Old senile Joe even hinted at this when he made his "minor incursion" remarks.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a very big deal and a very bad thing. Permit me to stipulate that, before going on to observe that the event has also triggered the latest outbreak of mass hysteria among the Western ruling class, the severest yet.
Just when sobriety, responsibility, probity, and diplomatic skill are most needful, our pundits and policymakers offer the opposite: trembling emotion, cheap propaganda, wild fantasies, a refusal to dialogue and de-escalate. And the worst part is: It’s all so damned familiar. Once more, we are falling—or rather, being driven—into structural information traps that hamper sound decision-making and force policy choices we might regret dearly when it’s too late.
The process has proved highly costly in recent years. This time, it could spell catastrophe. This time, rash action risks a direct confrontation with a mighty Eurasian civilization with wounded pride and a vast arsenal of strategic weapons. How did we get here?
If you’re stuck in one of these info traps, it is very difficult to pull yourself out. Those who might try to help will face the full force of your wrath (as we will see). Once the media moment has passed, of course, you might wonder how you ever came to believe X or to advocate Y. There might be hints of regret. But then life presses on. Other concerns compete for your limited time and attention. That is, until the next trap-laden media event.
Yet we must examine previous episodes. Four especially stand out: the post-9/11 wars, the Arab Spring, the European migrant crisis, and the Covid pandemic. These happen to be the defining media moments of my career as a journalist, and in some cases, I fell into the info traps. The experience indelibly shaped my worldview. But you don’t need to share my worldview to notice—and beware—three info-trap patterns common to all of these media moments.
First, beware emotionally charged images that tend to overwhelm reason. The Arab Spring should have been instructive on this count. Following the self-immolation of a Tunisian fruit vendor in 2010, images of denim-clad, smartphone-wielding young liberals taking to the streets dazzled reporters and social-media users. The images fed a narrative of heroic Jeffersonians facing down hidebound kleptocrats. The fervor suppressed inconvenient questions.
Questions like: Were these youths, in fact, representative of their societies, or did they win our favor merely because they happened to look and sound like us? Were they actually prepared to govern their societies, or might their movements be hijacked by less-savory actors? If Islamists with mass support did end up in power, would the young liberals be able to accept that? Were there reasons to take a more cautious approach, taking into account religious and tribal complexities and the geopolitical fault lines that crisscross the region?
Needless to say, the United States didn’t pursue a cautious policy, pushing its clients to step down and, in the case of Libya, mounting a military intervention to oust Muammar Gaddafi. The result: instability, civil war, ungoverned spaces, terror, and an eventual return to autocracy in most Arab Spring states.
Emotive images similarly overwhelmed rational decision-making during the 2015-16 European migrant crisis. The decisive shift toward flinging open the continent’s gates came in response to a photograph of a Syrian child lying dead on Turkey’s western shore after trying to reach the Greek isles. More than a million newcomers—mostly men, many unvetted—poured into Europe as refugees. It was far from clear how many were, in fact, economic migrants whose crossings had been made possible by human smuggling. Concerns about mass migration’s adverse effects on security, welfare services, and social cohesion were, again, suppressed until much later—when it was too late.
The pandemic supplied its share of gripping and potentially misleading images—above all, that of the death and misery in Italy’s Covid wards, scenes that were certain to arrive at a hospital near you, unless drastic but temporary measures were taken. Few inquired about the extent to which Italy’s horrors were a specific product of Italy’s health system and its elderly population.
Second, beware the treatment of dissent or criticism as treason. This is perhaps the most pernicious pattern in info traps, because it taps into the very human tendency to ostracize and “out-group” dissidents. Modern media, with their power to incite ravenous mobs, have supercharged this ancient temptation. The mob has been instructed to defend a certain policy—and only a traitor or villain could have second thoughts!
Thus, opponents of the Iraq War, including many who made this magazine their home, were called “unpatriotic” conservatives. France’s reservations led to the idiocy of “Freedom Fries.” Those who questioned the Arab Spring—including as eminent a scholar of the Middle East as Bernard Lewis—were dismissed as “Orientalists” and worse. Likewise, those who questioned Angela Merkel’s open-door policy could barely get a hearing in the mainstream.
Then there was Covid. Everyone had to wear a mask. Everyone had to boast of his vaccination status online, to post masked selfies. To proclaim #StayHomeSaveLives. Critics of job-killing and small-biz-destroying lockdowns were no doubt callous and heartless. When R.R. Reno, editor of First Things, warned that the West was succumbing to a dangerous safety-ism, prioritizing physical wellbeing at the expense all other goods, the Catholic University theologian Joseph Cappizi accused him, falsely, of proposing that “the value of life should be measured in economic terms,” of being “indifferent to the wellbeing of society’s most vulnerable members.” It was a sophisticated way of asking the same question posed by Reno’s frothy online persecutors: “How many Grannies are you prepared to kill on the altar of your economy, Rusty?”
Third and finally, beware delusions of total mastery over complex crises. It’s all too easy for people speculating on traditional or social media that complex matters are actually simple, that “we” can take drastic measures without worrying about the consequences, because the West enjoys a uniquely capable civilization, thanks to its scientific and technological prowess. We think we can “game out” the outcomes, to see around the corner, to prophesy with data.
Time and again, events make a mockery of this confidence—yet it persists. The Iraq War’s proponents told us we would be greeted with flowers, that the occupation would be short and sweet. Operation Iraqi Freedom plunged the country into chaos and civil war that finally redounded to the benefit of Iran. “Wir schaffen das [We can do this],” then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel said of the prospect of absorbing a million migrants. Her decision dramatically destabilized European politics. “Two weeks to flatten the curve” lasted more than two years.
Do you notice similar patterns in the Western response to the Ukraine crisis? I’m afraid I do. From the pictures of grandmothers and photogenic young women taking up Kalashnikovs to defend Ukraine, to (manufactured) stories of Ukrainian troops sacrificing themselves rather than surrender, we are being bombarded with one-sided, emotionally gripping images.
We are once more treating dissidents and critics as traitors and villains and “Putin shills.” The same people who accused lockdown critics of murderous indifference are now accusing critics of escalation of…the same thing: Capizzi on Monday assailed the Harvard Law scholar Adrian Vermeule for “liking” a map circulating online showing Russian forces encirclement of the Ukrainian city of Kharkov. Vermeule was guilty of something, because he had clicked “like” on a map of a place “where innocents are dying.”
And we are once more touting our own mastery over events that are rather hard to master. The usual hawkish suspects are feeding the dream of a hopeless Ukrainian resistance. These figures are likely merely deepening the Ukrainian people’s pain, without altering the ultimate outcome of the conflict. And measures that could plausibly alter the outcome bear the unfortunate risk of bringing us close to the brink of all-out war with Moscow.
Perhaps that is what many Americans want. But those who are comfortable with the escalation cycle and think they’re prepared to accept the downsides might consider if they’re viewing events from deep inside an information trap.

Azov’s formal Facebook ban began in 2019, and the regiment, along with several associated individuals like Biletsky, were designated under the company’s prohibition against hate groups, subject to its harshest “Tier 1” restrictions that bar users from engaging in “praise, support, or representation” of blacklisted entities across the company’s platforms.
Facebook’s previously secret roster of banned groups and persons, published by The Intercept last year, categorized the Azov Battalion alongside the likes of the Islamic State and the Ku Klux Klan, all Tier 1 groups because of their propensity for “serious offline harms” and “violence against civilians.” Indeed, a 2016 report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights found that Azov soldiers had raped and tortured civilians during Russia’s 2014 invasion of Ukraine.

About eight worshippers have been abducted by terrorists during a church service at Salama Baptist Church in a village called Gidigori in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.
A source from the community told Daily Trust the incident occurred at about 10 am on Sunday, adding that the pastor of the Church was among the abductees.
It was gathered that the church is close to Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State.
Similarly, in December 2020, a 37-year-old pastor with the Evangelical Church Winning All in Chikuba town in the Shiroro Local Government Area of the state, Reverend Jeremiah Ibrahim, was killed by bandits.
The victim was killed when the assailants invaded his church.
Also in November 2021, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kaduna State, Rev. Joseph Hayab, confirmed the killing of two persons and the abduction of 66 worshippers. He also said three other victims were seriously injured by the bandits.
At least 17 people, including a father and son, were killed when suspected bandits raided villages in Mashegu, Lavun and Wushishi Local Government Areas of Niger State. Many fled their homes as a result of the attacks, which occurred between 12pm and 8pm on Saturday.
In the Mashegu Local Government Area, the villages attacked were Sahon-Rami, Igbede, Chekaku, Ubegi, Maishankafi and Poshi.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Mashegu Local Government Chairman, Mohammed A. Isah, said the Chief of Staff to Mashegu Local Government Chairman, Umar Ubegi, and his father were killed during the attack. Also killed was the Village Head of Poshi, and seven others in Sahon-Rami and Maishankafi.
“They moved from one village to the other on motorcycles, killing and kidnapping people. They also rustled cows belonging to villagers. About 13 communities were sacked and people have fled. Tension is high in our local government now. These people have been operating since Friday. But only one village was attacked on Friday which was Sahon-Rami. The remaining villages were attacked today (Saturday),” he said.
In the Lavun Local Government Area, ten villages were reportedly attacked, leaving no fewer than three persons dead while 3 others were kidnapped.
The villages attacked in Lavun Local Government were Egbako, Dabban, Kupa, Ndaruka, Tsogi, Mawogi, Yemi, Managi, Kanko and Gogaga. Yakubu Mohammed, a resident of Egbako, one of the communities attacked, said, “They started the operation around 12pm, moving from one village to another. For now, we have only discovered the dead bodies of three persons. They also went away with three others.”
The affected communities are 36 kilometres away from Bida, and less than 30 kilometres from the palace of Etsu Nupe.

Last I checked, Kyiv is not in any of the regions that are dominated by Russians, that supposedly broke away. The Russian troops are no where near the areas they're supposedly going into Ukraine to protect.
The invasion isn't focused on protecting ethnic Russians -- it's about conquest.

McFoul was ambassador for 2 years and had little independent authority. His last day as ambassador was 26 Feb 2014 the day before the Russian take over of Crimea. Crimea declared itself an independent country and Russia then declared Crimea part of Russia in March 2014. No US ambassador returned to Moscow until summer 2014.

ALEPPO NORTHERN COUNTRYSIDE, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, a Turkish drone targeted the positions of the Syrian government forces stationing in the town of Tel Rifaat in the northern countryside of Aleppo, north Syria.
This afternoon, a Turkish drone targeted the hill of Tel Rifaat, on the outskirts of the city, where the Syrian government forces are deployed, but no casualties were reported, according to what an eyewitness said.
There is a police station and the State Civil Status Department in the vicinity of the densely populated hill.
On February 15, the town of Tel Rifaat and its surroundings were hit with about 20 shells by the Turkish forces, resulting in the injury of 5 children as well as causing material damage to civilians’ property.
The town of Tel Rifaat, which embraces a part of IDPs of Afrin, has been threatened with invasion by Turkey and its loyal factions since residents of Afrin fled their areas and headed towards the northern countryside of Aleppo amidst the successive shelling that the town is witnessing.
The Syrian government forces accompanied by Russian forces are running the town of Tel Rifaat and its vicinities, where their posts have been deployed since 2018.

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – An officer of the government forces plus a civilian were killed on Sunday evening in two separate attacks in the countryside of Daraa.
“Major Maher Wassouf, who was affiliated with the Political Security Branch of the government forces, was killed in an attack by unknown assailants on his car near the town of Sayda in the eastern countryside of Daraa,” a local source told North Press.
“Al-Wasouf was from the city of Jableh in the countryside of Lattakia, and he was in charge of the Nassib border crossing with Jordan.”
“Al-Wasouf was infamous for his blackmail of travelers and truck drivers with the aim of paying royalties,” the sources said.
In a separate incident, a person was deadly shot by unidentified gunmen in the town of al-Naima in the eastern countryside of Daraa.
Daraa, which is completely run by the government forces, has recently witnessed cases of killing of more than 10 people, most of whom were former members of the opposition.

Largely as a result of such sharp restrictions on U.S. energy production, gas prices at the pump have jumped by $1 a gallon from a year ago, and oil prices have skyrocketed to $90 a barrel — the highest levels since the Obama administration.
Last year, Biden also lifted bipartisan congressional sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which was to deliver Russian natural gas to Germany. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Biden announced that he would reinstitute the sanctions, an announcement that came a day after Germany halted certification of the pipeline.
The only option for Biden to "affect Russian behavior — is to kick them out of the international banking system, and he wouldn't do it," former Deputy National Security Advisor KT McFarland told Fox News on Thursday at CPAC. "Why? Because the Germans and the French and the Italians — nobody wants to go along with it. Why? Because they all rely on Russian energy, Russian oil and natural gas."
New Jersey Democrats Sen. Bob Menendez and Rep. Bill Pascrell also recommended removing Russian banks from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) payment system.
