-Short Attention Span Theater-
Ira Sankey 1840-1908 - Saved on a moonlit battlefield by a song
[Bible.org] It was Christmas Eve 1875 and Ira Sankey was traveling on a Delaware River steamboat when he was recognized by some of the passengers. His picture had been in the newspaper because he was the song leader for the famous evangelist D. L. Moody. They asked him to sing one of his own hymns, but Sankey demurred, saying that he preferred to sing William B. Bradbury’s hymn, "Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us."

As he sang, one of the stanzas began, "We are Thine; do Thou befriend us. Be the Guardian of our way." When he finished, a man stepped from the shadows and asked, "Did you ever serve in the Union Army?" "Yes," Mr. Sankey answered, "in the spring of 1860."

Can you remember if you were doing picket duty on a bright, moonlit night in 1862?"

"Yes," Mr. Sankey answered, very much surprised.

"So did I, but I was serving in the Confederate army. When I saw you standing at your post, I thought to myself, ’That fellow will never get away alive.’ I raised my musket and took aim. I was standing in the shadow, completely concealed, while the full light of the moon was falling upon you. At that instant, just as a moment ago, you raised your eyes to heaven and began to sing... ’Let him sing his song to the end,’ I said to myself, ’I can shoot him afterwards.’ He’s my victim at all events, and my bullet cannot miss him.’

But the song you sang then was the song you sang just now. I heard the words perfectly: ’We are Thine; do Thou befriend us. Be the Guardian of our way.’ Those words stirred up many memories. I began to think of my childhood and my God-fearing mother. She had many times sung that song to me. When you had finished your song, it was impossible for me to take aim again. I thought, ’The Lord who is able to save that man from certain death must surely be great and mighty.’ And my arm of its own accord dropped limp at my side."

Single source intelligence (signals) backed up with overhead imagery or human intelligence (HUMINT) becomes MULTI-Source and actionable. Folks really need to take those cellies seriously. The Taliban seldom did, figuring switching off from a pocketful of 'selectors' (cell phones) would spoof the infidels. Didn't work then, won't work now. A good analyst can recognize the voice, even without sophisticated voice recognition tools.

Nesting or clustering of selector signals produces 'top of the deck' high value targets (HVT). Geo location technology was no friend of the Taliban.

HUMINT note... I am sure the Ukrainistas are witting and on the lookout for possible Russian infiltrators and reporters. Everybody that smiles at ya, ain't your friend.

Russia keeps rate at 20% as economic crisis looms, cenbank to buy govt bonds
March 18 (Reuters) - Russia's central bank kept its key interest rate at 20% on Friday following last month's massive emergency hike and said it would start buying OFZ government bonds, warning of an imminent spike in inflation and a looming economic contraction.

Bank of Russia policymakers held a scheduled rate meeting after more than doubling the key rate to 20% from 9.5% in a one-off action on Feb. 28 to support financial stability and shore up the rouble. The currency had crashed to record lows as Western countries imposed sanctions against Russia over its actions in Ukraine.

Hackers leak ‘new’ docs from Mossad chief after wife’s ‘old’ phone said hacked
[IsraelTimes] Open Hands’ group releases 2020 salary and tax papers allegedly belonging to David Barnea: ’Are they sending your NEW documents to your wife’s OLD phone??’

An anonymous Telegram channel released further documents that allegedly belong to Mossad chief David Barnea, days after publishing a video with other personal information and photos.

According to unsourced Hebrew-language media reports this week, an old phone belonging to Barnea’s wife was hacked by the group, which has been ostensibly tied to Iran. Reports said there was no sensitive information on the phone that could potentially harm state security.

On Saturday, the "Open Hands" channel released Barnea’s wage and tax papers from 2020, alleging that the information was "new."

"It seems that the director of the Mossad’s wage bill can be found in his wife’s ’OLD PHONE’! Mr. Bernea [sic], are they sending your NEW documents to your wife’s OLD phone?? Are you sure that the leakage is just from your wife’s ’OLD PHONE’?" the group said in a message on Telegram.

The documents showed Barnea’s Form 106, an annual statement of salary and tax information from his employer, the Prime Minister’s Office.

There was no immediate comment from the PMO on the new documents.

On Wednesday, Open Hands published a video that showed several personal photos, flight tickets under Barnea’s name, his ID card, tax documents addressed to his wife and satellite imagery of what it claimed was his private home in the central city of Hod Hasharon.

A clip of Barnea making silly faces, apparently during a private video chat, is also seen in the video.

The group claimed it began its surveillance operation against Barnea by breaking into the database of the city’s local library. It was not immediately clear this information was used to gather the data on Barnea.

The PMO stated Wednesday on the Mossad’s behalf that Barnea’s phone was not hacked and the "materials in question are old," without elaborating further.

Open Hands did not say where it was from, but some Hebrew-language media reports were quick to point the finger at Iran. Nour News, a website linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also published details of the leak.

It was not the first time alleged Iranian hackers have published stolen personal information on targets.

An Iranian-linked hacking group, Black Shadow, targeted an Israeli hosting company last year, temporarily shutting down a number of websites and stealing user data from "Atraf," an Israeli LGBT dating site. It later published some of the data.

Black Shadow also stole a vast trove of information from Israeli insurance company Shirbit in 2020 and then sold it on the dark web when the firm refused to pay a ransom.

Israel and Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
have for years been involved in a largely quiet cyberwar, which occasionally bubbles to the surface.

On Monday evening, Israeli government websites were downed for over an hour due to a major cyberattack, which has also been ostensibly tied to Iran by media reports.

Israeli officials have previously accused Iran of attempting to hack Israel’s water system in 2020.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Family of British-Iranian says Tehran demanded $35,000 for his release
[IsraelTimes] Anoosheh Ashoori, tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
for 10 years on charges of spying for Israel, was freed alongside compatriot Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe after UK reached deal with Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
over historic debt.

The family of a UK-Iranian man freed this week after spending five years in a Tehran jail were forced to pay Iran £27,000 ($35,600) in order to secure his return home, they said Saturday.

Anoosheh Ashoori, a retired engineer from southeast London, was arrested in 2017 and tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
for 10 years on charges of spying for Israel.

He flew home on Wednesday having been released along with compatriot Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe after Britannia reached a deal with Tehran over a historic military contract debt.

But his release was only secured after the family were able to meet a last-minute demand to pay a fine, they said.

"On March 14th, Dad’s conditional release was signed and communicated to us," the family wrote on fundraising site Crowdfunder.

"We had been waiting for 5 years for Dad to come home and were suddenly told that the only thing now stopping this... was an arbitrary £27,000 fine which we suddenly had to pay," they added.

"We had less than 12 hours to raise the money, taking out loans using our credit cards, and opening new accounts," Ashoori’s wife, Sherry Izadi, told The Guardian in comments published Saturday.

"My only thought was: ’How are we going to do this in time?'"

The Crowdfunder appeal had already raised more than £33,000 on Saturday, £6,000 above the target.

FATE OF THIRD PRISONER UNCLEAR
The families of both Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Ashoori believe they were being held as political prisoners until the historic debt was settled.

The final deal was reached "after highly complex and exhaustive negotiations," UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said.

The fate of a third British-Iranian held in Tehran was on Saturday unclear.

Truss announced on Wednesday that Morad Tahbaz, who also holds US nationality, has been released from prison "on furlough" to his Tehran home.

But relatives said he had been taken back to Evin prison after only 48 hours at his family home in Tehran.

The UK Foreign Office said that he had gone to the prison to have an ankle tag fitted, but had yet to give an update on whether he had been returned.

The ministry said Iran would be in breach of its commitments if the 69-year-old conservationist was kept in jail.

Iraq
Iraqi oil tycoon reject Iran’s claims his destroyed mansion was a Mossad base
[IsraelTimes] Baz Karim Barzinji’s home was hit in IRGC missile attack near US consulate in Erbil, in supposed response to alleged Israeli strike in Syria that killed two Iranian officers

Once a lavish mansion, the sprawling home of an Iraqi Kurdish oil tycoon was laid to waste in a barrage of missiles that struck near a US consulate complex in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil earlier this week

Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard said it launched the attack last Sunday, firing off 12 cruise missiles at what it described as a "strategic center" of the Israeli spy agency Mossad — in retaliation for an alleged Israeli strike in Syria that killed two of the Iranian paramilitary force’s members the previous week.

Israeli jogger lightly hurt in Jerusalem stabbing attack, assailant shot
[IsraelTimes] A 35-year-old Israeli man was lightly hurt when out jogging on Saturday morning in a stabbing attack on Jerusalem’s Hebron Road, near the Cinematheque and the First Station restaurant and shopping area, police and medics said.

According to Israel Police, the assailant stabbed the jogger at the intersection of David Remez Street and Hebron Road, south of the Old City. The jogger struggled with his attacker and fought him off, sustaining light injuries.

The 28-year-old Paleostinian assailant, from the adjacent neighborhood of Abu Tor, was shot by coppers. According to the Magen David Adom emergency service, the suspect was at death's door.

Magen David Adom medics said they found the Israeli man sitting on the sidewalk, fully conscious.

Both the stabbing victim and the suspect were taken by medics to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

The attack and the moment the assailant was shot were filmed from several angles. The assailant is seen pulling out a knife and attacking a man who is running across the street. They tussle, and the jogger manages to repeatedly fend off his attacker, who continues the attack until a passerby arrives. At one point the victim manages to throw the knife away, which a passerby then picks up, as the victim flees.

The suspect is then seen stumbling and dropping to his knees as a passerby pushes him to the ground. Shortly after, the suspect is seen walking toward officers, as one fires a single shot. The suspect then falls to the ground, as the officer who opened fire tells his colleagues to "cease."
Or, more clearly: "head shot"

Canadian mosque worshippers attacked with bear spray
[IsraelTimes] Worshippers at dawn prayer in a suburb of Toronto tackle and subdue a 24-year-old man who allegedly entered their mosque and attacked people with bear spray, according to local police.

Peel Regional Police say the man walked into the Dar al-Tawheed Islamic Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, and allegedly "discharged bear spray towards people in the mosque while brandishing a hatchet" just before 7 a.m.

Speaking on behalf of the mosque, Nadia Hasan of the National Council of Canadian Moslems says a group of about 20 men were praying when the man sprayed them.

"Some of the men turned around and they very bravely decided that they were not going to let him attack them," she says. "They tackled him to the ground and apprehended him until the police showed up."

While condemning the Kremlin, he was at pains to stress that France was not in a military conflict with Russia earlier this month. “There is a war on the ground, but we are not at war,” he said, following a meeting of EU heads of state at the Palace of Versailles."

China-Japan-Koreas
Inside the secret transfer of military equipment to Ukrainian soldiers
Excerpt:
[Stars & Stripes] "It has just exploded," said Jonas Ohman, a Swedish-born filmmaker who started the group.

For years, Ohman said, he took no salary and had no paid staff as he fulfilled direct requests from front-line units with an annual budget of less than $200,000. Since the invasion last month, more than $20 million has poured in from within Lithuania, a country of 2.8 million residents. He is dispatching a convoy to the border every four or five days.

With a cellphone held against a days-old beard, Ohman orders military gear by the ton from around Europe, China, Israel. He argues with customs officials in a half-dozen countries to get the shipments delivered, railing against functionaries who block his way and officers who are slaves to regulation.

"I tell them all the time: 10,000 euros can be more deadly than a million if you know how to spend it," he growled between phone calls.

Ohman has filled one donated warehouse on the outskirts of Poland’s capital, Warsaw. Another in Vilnius, provided by a Lithuanian transport company, has become a drop-off site for locals wanting to give.

"These will work," one volunteer declared on a recent afternoon when a truck arrived at the Vilnius warehouse with 800 pairs of new steel-toed boots and 1,000 fleece jackets still in the wrapper, all donated by a hunting goods retailer.

A forklift unloaded the cases, depositing them next to 14 pallets of IV saline solutions and boxes filled with 13,000 trauma tourniquets and 200 satellite phones.

A local marketing company has launched a fundraising campaign for the group. And a group of Rotary Club volunteers makes calls to military suppliers in surrounding countries.

"Everything in Europe is selling out," said Zemyna Bliumenzonaite, a Blue and Yellow staffer. "But we are getting more requests than ever."

She held out her phone to show some of the texts she gets from soldiers in Ukraine. One named "Kruk" asked for 1,000 tourniquets and 40 individual first aid kits. She tells him they will be in the next convoy.

"You are our Guardian Angel," he writes back.

$2.6M in DOD Grants to Fund Studies of Climate Change Impact on Security
[Maryland Today] Two University of Maryland researchers have received awards totaling $2.6 million to study how national security and climate change intersect in the United States and around the world.

Kathleen Gallagher Cunningham, professor and co-director of graduate studies in the Department of Government and Politics, and Distinguished University Professor Arie Kruglanski in the Department of Psychology were among 17 researchers nationwide to be named recipients of the grants from the Department of Defense’s Minerva Research Initiative, a university-based social science research program.

Cunningham received about $1.6 million to lead a three-year project to study the role that state and non-state actors play in a country’s management of climate change. The focus is Mozambique, an East African nation that has a diverse array of environmental hazards along with a history of non-state actors, ranging from non-governmental organizations to rebel groups, engaging with the population in different ways.

The study will examine people’s understanding of the risks of climate change and how non-state actors involve themselves in governing such issues, said Cunningham, who is working with researchers from Emory University, Texas A&M, Penn State and Carleton University.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
What Ukraine Can Learn From Finland's Stand 80 Years Ago
[Bloomberg] In November 1939, soon after Hitler’s Germany invaded Poland, another massive European country likewise attacked a smaller neighbor: Russia invaded Finland. After vicious fighting through a long and bitter winter, the war ended with the Moscow Peace Treaty, in which Finnish concessions fell far short of what Stalin had hoped for in launching his invasion.

Despite being heavily outgunned and outmanned by the Soviet Army, the Finns were able to largely fight the Russians to a standstill in what they call the Winter War. The scenario was eerily similar to the situation unfolding today in Ukraine, where President Vladimir Putin’s Russia is facing ferocious resistance from the scrappy Ukrainians.

Over a decade ago, when I visited Helsinki as the supreme allied commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the first place the Finns took me was to their Winter War Museum. We spent two hours there, and I was fascinated by the courage portrayed in the dioramas, exhibits, maps and photographs from the war. I treasure a gift the Finns gave me of a map showing the troop locations, and the names and faces of the Finnish generals around the border.

The Finns were outnumbered roughly two to one in terms of trained soldiers, but the more staggering differences were in tank and combat aircraft inventories. The Finns had just a few dozen of each, while the Soviets had around 5,000 tanks and 4,000 aircraft. Yet by the end of the conflict, the Finns had inflicted five times as many killed in action on the Soviet army as among their own.

While the Soviet advantages in the air and with mechanized operations eventually overcame much of the Finnish resistance, the determined nature of the defenders and the threat of an ongoing insurgency did much to shape the peace. Despite the pre-war goals of conquering the entire country and installing a puppet regime, the Soviets finally settled for a small slice of Finland’s territory (around 10%) and a pledge of Finnish neutrality.

What can we learn from the Russo-Finnish War that informs our approach to events in Ukraine today?

First and most importantly, we should appreciate that a determined military force, fighting on home terrain, can face down daunting odds to achieve success on the battlefield. The Finns have a long and fierce sense of independence, as do the Ukrainians, despite Russian protestations in both wars. I know firsthand the high quality of both nation’s militaries, which deployed under my command in Afghanistan and on other NATO missions.

When soldiers are fighting to protect their children, parents and spouses — and the independence of their nation — they have a significant morale advantage over conscripts and reservists. This was true for the Finns and remains a significant factor in the Ukraine war.

A second issue that applies in both instances is the importance of outside assistance. Volunteers from around the free world made their way to Finland to fight in the Winter War, notably from neighboring Sweden. The Finns received combat equipment and diplomatic assistance as well from many nations. The League of Nations condemned the Soviet invasion of Finland, much as the United Nations has censured Russia’s actions.

#1  Many differences too numerous to mention. Terrain, massive exit of population uninhibited by the waving Russians, outrageous corruption within Ukrainian government and so on. A polished turd still looks like a turd. Putin is not Stalin. He is well disciplined, tenacious and goal oriented. Deep water port a highly desired need for Russia. Forcing Russia and China together has created a NATO of Asia. India, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea and of course Taiwan all now see the tide of change approaching them. With the Biden leadership they can expect no consideration. They are on their own.Latin America is lost, Africa/Arab world, and even Canada. NATO is a sad joke. If I lived in Alaska now I too would be nervous. This will be a long slog for America. With bureaucrats running things only failure will be achieved.

RNC launches voter registration initiative at gas stations amid rising prices
[The Hill] The Republican National Committee (RNC) launched a voter registration initiative that will run at gas stations across the country in the upcoming weeks amid a sharp rise in fuel prices.

As gas prices in the country hit record highs, "the RNC will be holding several voter registration events across the country in the coming weeks," information about the events shared with The Hill said.

The first event took place in Arizona Saturday, where volunteers and staff registered Americans to vote from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. local time.

Republicans have slammed President Biden over high fuel prices as the country continues to grapple with record inflation.

The president warned Americans that the price of fuel was likely to climb even higher earlier this month, when he announced that the U.S. would ban oil imports from Russia amid its war with Ukraine.

"Arizonans are frustrated with paying the record-high gas prices we’ve seen recently, this is an issue that affects almost every single Arizonan," Ben Petersen, the communications director for Arizona’s RNC, said.

LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT) in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
and seized arms and ammunition, police said, according to news agency PTI.

Acting on specific information regarding movement of anti-national elements in Karhama, Kunzer area of Baramulla, a cordon and search operation was launched by security forces there, a police front man said.

During the search, one terrorist associate of proscribed terror outfit LeT/TRF (The Resistance® Front - a front of the LeT) was arrested by the joint search party, he said.

The front man identified the arrested as Waseem Ahmed War, a resident of Karhama Kunzer.

Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including a hand grenade, two AK-47 magazines and 20 live rounds were seized from his possession, he said.

A case has been registered and investigation has been initiated.

Elites Suggest Price Controls, Dystopian Travel Restrictions To 'Manage' Soaring Energy Costs
[ZERO] Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia supplied the world with one out of every ten barrels of crude consumed. But as the United States, Canada, and Australia have imposed embargoes on Russian crude and some buyers in Europe are halting purchases, the global oil market is facing one of the worst disruptions since the 1973 oil crisis when the members of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) led by Saudi Arabia declared an oil ban on Western countries for their support of Israel during the Yom Kippur War.

The energy price shock of the mid-1970s led to the reduction of maximum national speed limits from 70 mph to 55 mph. The 21% reduction in speed equated to gas consumption savings.

Lawmaker Calls for Full Investigation Into Collusion Between Big Tech, Mainstream Media and Democrats
[Gateway] "So, let’s get back to the name-calling," said "journalist" Leslie Stahl in an interview with then-President Donald Trump after dismissing what should have been one of the most consequential October surprises in presidential election history, the Hunter Biden laptop story.

The New York Post’s October 2020 bombshell story, which exposed a presidential candidate’s planned business deal with a CCP-affiliated company established precisely to enrich his family, set up so that the candidate himself, referred to as "The Big Guy," would receive a 10 percent share of future profits, should have derailed Joe Biden’s campaign. The emails revealed in this game-changing report provided a road-map of the Biden family’s long history of influence peddling.

But we quickly learned that a scandal is only a scandal if Big Tech, the legacy media and a group of former intelligence community leaders say it is.

ISIS affiliates arrested in al-Hol in an ongoing security operation
[Rudaw] The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the internal security forces (Asayish) have arrested several Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) suspects and affiliates in a large-scale ongoing military operation in al-Hol camp in northeast Syria (Rojava), a conflict monitor reported on Saturday.

The security forces have arrested several ISIS-affiliated men of different nationalities on Friday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said, as the operation entered its fourth day.

SOHR did not disclose the exact number of those detained.

The SDF and Asayish launched a large-scale security operation at the camp after two ISIS-affiliated women beat feet from the fifth section of al-Hol on Wednesday as the escape alerted the forces.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested thousands of ISIS fighters and their wives and children when they took control of the group’s last stronghold in Syria in March 2019. Most of these people are held at al-Hol, which is home to more than 60,000 people - mostly women and kiddies of different nationalities.

Security forces arrested 14 Iraqis for committing violations at the camp in late November.

Al-Hol has been branded a breeding ground for terrorism, with human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
groups warning of squalid conditions at the camp.

There have been repeated calls from Kurdish and US officials asking the international community to repatriate their nationals from al-Hol, but only a few countries have responded positively as they are worried about security concerns.

Four Swedish nationals, including two children from ISIS families, were repatriated from the camp on Wednesday.

#1  Pretty much accurate.

The US and EU have a policy of coercion, threats, hijacks of international transactions that hurt populations rather than regimes. It is a conveniently cruel attitude adopted by only truly evil cliques. Like killing off all bison just to starve native Americans and gloat over the 'masterful strategy' as 'victors'. This attitude continues to this day.

If the eastern nations do conspire together to chip away at that capacity and create a bloc to counter the overbearing influence of the west, no one can grudge them that. American peeps should instead revolt against their new establishment which is turning this age old policy of coercion and economic threats inward, toward Republicans and classic liberals and everybody who doesn't want a gay rape paradise run by afromarxist pimps and crazy women.

The Russians are being very methodical and focused on their war aims in the East and along the coast in the South. They will keep crushing Ukraine with hypersonic missiles until they achieve their goals. They don't need to occupy Ukraine or even invade Kiev. From 2 hrs ago:

More missile strikes will strengthen Russia's negotiating position further and persuade more and more countries to avoid sanctions and do business with Russia.

China, India and France are on board already. Unsentimental nations that see through the propaganda are correctly judging that Russia's winning and that their missiles will bring this to a conclusion soon. #22  The French will make huge profits.

"The French retail tycoons behind Decathlon have been setting out plans for a major Russian expansion of their multi-billion euro DIY chain.

Leroy Merlin, owned by the Mulliez family - which with a €42bn (£35bn) fortune ranks among the richest on the planet - wants to fill the vacuum left by western rivals such as Ikea after they pulled out of Russia.

In a letter to suppliers, the bosses at the Russian arm of Leroy Merlin said that “sales have significantly increased” since the start of Mr Putin’s brutal military campaign.

The letter, seen by The Telegraph, reads: “Since the disappearance of certain companies from the market, we are open to your proposals on the increase of supply and the increase of your assortment of products.

“In the next three to four months we plan to fully replace imported products with those produced in Russia.”

#24  Just watched the latest Task and Purpose YouTube video on the "Fog of War" in the Ukraine. The Ukrainian Army in the East has reached a decision point on whether to withdraw to the West while/if they can still move in order to maintain their combat power. The Russian holding attacks appear to have have fixed the Eastern Ukrainian units into place...and the encirclement/destruction of the Ukrainian military is the apparent objective. Hazards if Ukrainians stay near their depots and risk encirclement...and huge risk if the Ukrainians attack to the west to escape the encirclement and get bottled up crossing the river...only to fall in on an uncertain supply and ammo situation in the West. The Russians want them to move into the kill zones at the river, but if they stay they will be pounded by heavy artillery. A crisis is coming...Zelensky can see it.

#25  The Mulliez family's stores (they're Europe's version of Walmart, Home Depot and a sporting goods giant) will use local suppliers. Their costs will be in rubles and their revenues will be in rubles.

The Mulliez family is worth $46 billion. 15th richest family in the world. They know their business. IKEA's Russian operation was a cash cow for that company. Now that IKEA's departing , Mulliez will clean up. No competition.

Let them use them. Let them use them UP. How are they going to afford to replace them? They can't even afford good tires or basic communications. Plus, every time they fire one, the rest of the world gets a beautiful picture of their capabilities.

"Hypersonic" isn't the highest speed out there; US sensors and some of our new weapons systems operate just this side of the speed of light.

#34  Plus, every time they fire one, the rest of the world gets a beautiful picture of their capabilities.

Testing and Evaluation of their own capabilities I guess. It looks like the Russians are learning lessons and applying them. They are firing incompetent generals and forcing the others to lead from the front, thus the high attrition rate amongst the two and three stars... And now they have NCOs and first line officers that know the deal and can improve their training base after this war is over.

We can't seem to fire the incompetent Generals, ever...and we have few that have led from the front since the first gulf war. And now the vax purge caused us to lose more qualified combat soldiers than what the losses Russians have likely suffered so far in combat...

I have hopes that we can learn lessons from this war, but from what I hear from my EUCOM friends we are little more than spectators. Same happened in Afghanistan, we didn't document the bad and realign to ensure it doesn't ever happen again...just covered it up. Same will happen here. I am depressed.

Austin and Milley need to go, as well as Jake Sullivan. Sullivan authored this set of disasters and Milley and Austin just set there playing with themselves.

#36  Seems the bulk of it was either site slander or to influence newcomers. Remember there at the beginning, long time viewers getting called trolls by noobs.

Rantburg has been on a list since at least 2003, when I heard a peer name it specifically as "a tool of the Neocons." First got called a Neocon back in 2001, as "Someone not totally against the Bush Regime and their manufactured crises to justify their war for profit!" But that was back when the radical leftists weren't fucking lazy internet surfers and had to physically ambush, or Bushwack, people at social gatherings in order to influence or at least silence the opposition. Mind you, the metal is still hot, "Just got kicked in the nuts on international TV, seems something should be done."
"Oh, you're one of those Neocons!" "Just here for the chicks and beer, man." "Yeah, only a fascist would drink Budllksthatbeer."

Worst was invited to go catch a game, 2003, stay at the apartment. Game was watched, pizza ordered, beer chilled, cards shuffled, and a steady rotation of these true believers trying to get me to denounce the whole thing, or at least stop shut up about it. One guy, "Hey, my little brother over there just turned 18 and wants to sign. You know people over there right now getting shot at, you know danger yourself, I need you to talk him out of it." Quite the pickle, honor friend's request to keep his brother safe and denounce, or break the friendship. In retrospect, didn't lose friends, but stopped being invited to events because I made them not fun, so did get separated from good friends but them, they can call me up right now and I'd be like, "Dude!"

Bushwacked. Look it up you tiktok zoomie pussies.

Most importantly, he wanted to cleanse the east of the Ukrainian thugs who've terrorized the Donbas for 8 years, and build on this foundation to drive westward and secure a land bridge to Crimea. He's done so.

He wanted to encircle the Ukrainian armed forces and destroy them: he's doing so. As someone said yesterday, "Not a blitzkrieg but an anaconda." Slow, methodical, grinding, relentless. #69  ^ There is no evidence that there was ever another plan.

I would argue that this is Plan B and it *is* going rather well. When things jumped off, there were two special forces operations - a decapitation strike on the government and an attempt to seize Gostomel airport to create an air bridge for the assault on Kiev. Both failed. Ha-ha stupid Rus, right? Maybe not. Maybe more like heads I win/tails you lose.

If either of these ops were successful, it would give Russia a quick lead in the game, like throwing a Hail Mary on the first play. But even if they fail, both ops tie down troops and resources that are needed elsewhere which gives the Russians a bigger jump in the north, east, and especially the south. That is the main course. The airport and the government were just gravy.

I believe the failure of "Plan A" to achieve its primary goals is the source of the "Russians expected the Ukrainians to roll over" meme.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Why are German neo-Nazis training in Russia?
Why we disregard hysterical talk about uniquely evil Ukrainian Nazis: because we know they got training and support from government supported white supremacists in Russia. We see the beams in both Russian and Ukrainian eyes. Article is from 2020.
[DeutscheWelle] German right-wing forces of Evil are receiving paramilitary training in St. Petersburg, Russia, according to a new report by news magazine Focus. Who is running the training, and what do we know about the participants?

WHAT KIND OF CAMP DID RIGHT-WING FORCES OF EVIL REPORTEDLY VISIT IN RUSSIA?
Participating in paramilitary training is legal in Russia. Such training takes place under the protective umbrella of DOSAAF (Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy), an organization whose founding dates back to the days of the Soviet Union. The actual training, in which Germans reportedly participated, is provided by a club appearing under two different names: "Rezerv" or "Partizan." It takes place at a military facility on the outskirts of St. Petersburg. Until 2018, "Partizan" and its members were listed on the website of St. Petersburg's municipal office as a vigilante group in the Vyborg district. "That was prior to my taking office," a district representative told DW when asked about the matter.

Nigeria: Ex-Boko Haram fighters face tough path to reintegration
[DW] Nigeria is striving to reintegrate former Boko Haram Death Eaters who have voluntarily laid down their arms and surrendered to the authorities. But in many communities, resentment towards the ex-fighters is still strong.

The regional government in Borno state recently announced the successful reintegration into the community of the first group of 500 former fighters from the Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram
...not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
and a splinter group, the Islamic State

Peter Zeihan on Halliburton Exit
[YouTube] Think the Europeans will need to get by without Russian crude? You are 100% correct. But you are not thinking anywhere near big enough.

Most of Russia’s oil fields are both old and extraordinarily remote from Russia’s customers. Fields in the North Caucasus are either tapped out or were never refurbished in the aftermath of the Chechen Wars, those of Russia’s Tatarstan and Bashkortostan provinces are well past their peak, and even western Siberian fields have been showing diminishing returns since the 2000s. With few exceptions, Russia’s oil discoveries of the last decade or three are deeper, smaller, more technically challenging, and even farther from population centers than the older fields they would be expected to replace. Russian output isn’t in danger of collapsing, but maintaining output will require more infrastructure, far higher up-front costs, and ongoing technical love and care to prevent steady output declines from becoming something far worse.

While the Russians are no slouches when it comes to oil field knowledge, they were out of circulation from roughly 1940 through 2000. Oil technology came a long way in those sixty years. Foreign firms—most notably supermajors BP and Shell, and services firms Halliburton and Schlumberger—have collectively done work that is probably responsible for half of Russia’s contemporary output.

IED blast kills, wounds government soldiers in Syrian desert

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two soldiers of the Syrian government forces were killed and two others were wounded on Saturday as an IED exploded in their vehicle in the eastern countryside of Homs, central Syria.

“An IED exploded in a military vehicle that was driving some soldiers of the 11th Infantry Division near the 55-km de-confliction zone, which is adjacent to the US-led Global Coalition’s al-Tanf US military base,” a military source of the Fourth Armored Division said.

The soldiers were combing the border areas with the coalition’s base in the Syrian desert at the time of the explosion.

The dead soldiers, who were a staff sergeant and a petty officer, were sitting in the first row while the injured soldiers, who had shrapnel, were in the back, the source added.

The Syrian desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor constitute source of concern for the Iranian-backed militias and the government forces. Sleeper cells of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) occasionally carry out operations against them causing multiple losses despite heavy security campaigns and combing operation.

On March 16, two Syrian government soldiers were killed in an IED explosion that targeted their car in al-Asharah town, 55 kilometers east of Deir ez-Zor.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Kyiv Says Russia Picked 1,000 Volunteers from 'Army of Assad and Hizbullah'
[An Nahar] The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has alleged that the Russian army has chosen around 1,000 volunteers from what it called "the so-called army of Bashir al-Assad and Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...

"The Command of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continues to take measures to make up for the loss of personnel at the expense of foreigners. According to available information, the Russian occupiers have already picked up close to 1,000 volunteers from the so-called army of Bashir al-Assad and Hizbullah," the General Staff said in an English-language Facebook post.

"The main requirement for imported muscle is the experience of fighting in the city. At the same time, according to available information, the above-mentioned gunnies do not intend to take part in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, but to use ’business trips’ as opportunities to get to European countries," the General Staff added.

On Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Russia had drawn up lists of 40,000 fighters from Syrian army and allied militias to be put on standby for deployment in Ukraine.

The Kremlin said earlier that volunteers, including from Syria, were welcome to fight alongside the Russian army in Ukraine.

The Observatory and activists said Russian officers, in coordination with the Syrian military and allied militia, had set up registration offices in regime-held areas.

"More than 40,000 Syrians have registered to fight alongside Russia in Ukraine so far," said Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the UK-based monitor. Russian officers deployed as part of the force Moscow sent to Syria in 2015 to support Damascus had approved 22,000 of them, Abdel Rahman said.

Those fighters are either combatants drawn from the army or pro-regime militias who have experience in street warfare and received Russian training.

In a country where soldiers earn between $15 and $35 per month, Russia has promised them a salary of $1,100 to fight in Ukraine, the Observatory reported.

They are also entitled to $7,700 in compensation for injuries and their families to $16,500 if they are killed in combat.

Drought-stricken California imposes new round of water cuts
[NEWS.YAHOO] Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,'s urban water users and farmers who rely on supplies from state reservoirs will get less than planned this year as fears of a third consecutive dry year become reality, state officials announced Friday.Water agencies that serve 27 million people and 750,000 acres (303,514 hectares) of farmland, will get just 5% of what they've requested this year from state supplies beyond what's needed for critical activities such as drinking and bathing.

That's down from the 15% allocation state officials had announced in January, after a wet December fueled hopes of a lessening drought.

But a wet winter didn't materialize and unless several more inches of rain falls this month, the January-March period will be the driest start to a California year at least a century. That's when most of the state's rain and snow typically falls.

Mandatory restrictions on using water for outdoor activities like landscaping and other purposes may come from local water agencies as they continue to grapple with limited supplies, said Karla Nemeth, director of the California Department of Water Resources.

Local water agencies that know their communities’ unique needs are better poised than state officials to set water use restrictions, Nemeth said.

"I think with this reduced allocation we are going to see more urban areas in California move into some kind of mandatory water conservation," she said in an interview.

State officials will continue urging people to voluntarily cut water use by 15%, an amount designed to get Californians' collective water use back to what it was during the last drought, which lasted from 2012 to 2016, Nemeth said.

Statewide water use in January actually went up 2.6% compared to the same month in 2020, due to dry conditions and warm temperatures.

Both admirers and detractors in the West have seen him as a calculating genius, playing three-dimensional chess while everyone else was playing checkers. RIR never bought that analysis. We did see Putin as a cunning opportunist, parlaying strategic ambiguity and incremental bites at the periphery of the West into success in a long game of asymetric warfare — which, it must be remembered, is how the weak battle the strong. All the advantages that accrued to the spider in the Kremlin through that approach went out the window with the all-out invasion of Ukraine.

In testimony before Congress, CIA Director Bill Burns and Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines concurred in the assessment that Putin grossly miscalculated both Russia’s capacity and the response of Ukraine and the West. He thought he had sanction-proofed his economy; it’s reeling. He thought he had reformed his army to allow for a quick decapitation campaign; it’s bogged down, battered and suffering from poor morale. He thought the West was weak and riven by divisions and would not respond in a unified matter; so far, the West has shown a remarkably united front. And the most fundamental miscalculation of all: He thought Ukraine would fold up, roll over and die. Instead, they have put up a fierce, profoundly inspiring resistance. He forgot what real military thinkers — and sports coaches, for that matter — never forget: Your opponent has a say.

CRPF trooper injured as militants lob two grenades in south Kashmir’s Shopian, Tral
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

Three CRPF troopers were maimed after holy warriors lobbed two grenades at the security forces in south Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain.
’s Shopian and Tral areas on Saturday evening, police said.

"In Shopian, at about 1950hrs holy warriors had lobbed a grenade on CRPF camp of 178Bn. In this terror incident one CRPF personnel has received minor splinter injuries, " a police front man said.

"Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
in Awantipora at about 1955hrs holy warriors had lobbed a grenade on CRPF camp of 180Bn at Nowdal Tral in which two CRPF personnel received minor splinter injuries, " it added.

Police have registered cases in the twin grenade attacks and launched investigation.

Dozens Dead After Military Barracks Hit In South Ukraine
[NATION.PK] MYKOLAIV — Dozens of soldiers were killed after Russian troops struck a Ukrainian military barracks in the southern city of Mykolaiv, witnesses told AFP on Saturday while a rescue operation was underway. "No fewer than 200 soldiers were sleeping in the barracks" when Russian troops struck early Friday, a Ukrainian serviceman on the ground, 22-year-old Maxim, told AFP without providing his last name.

"At least 50 bodies have been recovered, but we do not know how many others are in the rubble," he said.

Another soldier estimated that the bombing could have killed around 100 people. Authorities have not yet released an official corpse count. The military facility located in the north of the city was fully destroyed after being hit by several rockets Friday morning. "Yesterday orcs hit our sleeping soldiers with a rocket in a cowardly manner," Vitaly Kim, head of the regional administration, said in a video on Saturday, using the Ukrainian nickname for Russian forces.

"A rescue operation is under way," he added. He did not provide further details, saying he expected to receive official information from the armed forces.

AFP journalists at the site earlier in the day saw the bodies of three people, including a shredded corpse extracted from under the rubble by rescue workers. A survivor was also pulled out.

"We are continuing to count but it is impossible to know given the state of the bodies," a rescuer told AFP.

Mykolaiv’s mayor Oleksandr Senkevych told local journalists that the city, which had a pre-war population of nearly half a million residents, had been struck from the neighbouring region of Kherson, now under Russian control.

For days, the Russians have bombarded Mykolaiv, which lies on the road to the strategic port city of Odessa some 130 kilometres (80 miles) down the Black Sea coastline.

Propaganda is part of the game. The Rooshuns can lie like a rug, and the Ukros do, too, but one thing they cannot lie about is time and space, which is a critical factor in military operations. And it also happens to be critical factor in propaganda, itself part of military operations.

The individual making these hints; he (or her for that matter) and his hints will be part of the background for as long as we present both sides.

#5  Hopefully, the Next Gen LAW is better than Next Gen Star Trek.

While we are making comparisons, a stick weighs less than a LAW and costs only a fraction as much, even with mil-spec sticks costing a lot more than regular sticks you find in the woods. The main downside is the somewhat shorter range.

#6  Bit of background from a M-47 Dragon anti-tank user.

Both American and western NATO nations use the different missiles as part of an overall doctrine. So you have a infantry battalion dug in and the Soviets are assaulting with a tank brigade. You as the NATO unit have a platoon of M-1s and two Apaches in support.

The M-1s, TOWs and Hellfires are for softening up the attack by taking out the heaviest tanks at the longest range (1-2KM) along with any leadership tank (they have two antennas) you see.

Once they get to 800 meters the Javelins are used to continue taking out tanks and anti-aircraft vehicles that are seen. By 300 meters the NLAWs, AT-4s and LAWs are used against the infantry carriers. Hopefully by this time you have taken out all or most of the SAMs and AA vehicles and you call in the A-10s to have a party.

The NLAW is the close range and last line of defense for infantry. And as Lord Garth pointed out, a slow and confined tank column is a perfect place to use it as well. For our vehicle ambushes, hit the front one, hit the back then hit any SAM/AA ones, pull back and call A-10s and artillery to finish up the now trapped column. Dragons and AT-4s were perfect for that scenario.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
From Ukrainian Perspective: Russian invasion of Ukraine, March 20th, 2022
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 21:42 It is technically impossible to take Kiev, says Arestovich.

According to him, another attempt to capture the capital from the north will be doomed to failure: “They can try to attack, but they have to go through the suburbs of Kyiv. We have been seeing how they go for 24 days: Bucha, Gostomel, Brovary… elite units. They are gone now. Now some hodgepodge will try to perform the same operation - well, what is the prospect?"

21:36 In Poland, 57 cities have unilaterally terminated cooperation agreements with 48 cities of Russia and 12 cities of Belarus, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reports.

21:34 Today, the enemy fired at the village of Novye Petrivtsi near Kiev from Gradov - a field caught fire, a gas station was damaged. According to preliminary data, no victims.

21:12 The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation says that the Azov battalion allegedly plans to stage a terrorist attack in Lviv against diplomats from the United States and other Western countries in order to present it as an attack by Russia.

21:11 Enemy intelligence has come to the conclusion that due to the strong resistance of the Ukrainians, it is impossible to establish pro-Russian authorities in the territories temporarily controlled by the invaders, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine says.

21:04 Today, 6,623 people have been evacuated along humanitarian corridors, according to the OP. 4,128 people left Mariupol for Zaporozhye, almost 500 Mariupol residents were transported from Mangush to Berdyansk, who will be able to leave for Zaporozhye tomorrow morning.

1820 people were evacuated from the Kiev region, 675 people from the Lugansk region. Food and medicines were delivered to the settlements of the Lugansk region.

21:03 Podolyak reacted to Poland's initiative on the Marshall Plan-2 for Ukraine: "Marshall Plan 2.0 is the moral responsibility of those who do not want to stand by when Russian missiles hit our cities. The destruction of civilian infrastructure is a war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine "Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is impeccable in his initiative to help rebuild. Poland is a sincere friend of Ukraine."

21:01 The RF Ministry of Defense declares that "Ukrainian nationalists have mined storage facilities with ammonia and chlorine at a chemical plant in Sumy in order to poison the residents if the Russian military enter the city."

In addition, according to the invaders, "Ukrainian militants brought containers with chemical substances to the school building in the village of Kotlyarovo in the Mykolaiv region, they are planned to be blown up when the Russian military approaches."

20:56 Arestovich: "Our conditions put forward at the negotiations contain many surprises for the Ukrainian society. We will not allow Putin to realize his wishes through the blood shed in Ukraine."

According to him, the Russians have chosen "the most ridiculous course of action - they will attack and lose another ten thousand people."

Arestovich believes that the Russians will agree to negotiations after another attempt to seize something. "Why do this - the questions of the Russian people to their leadership," he added.

20:54 The deputy commander of the Azov regiment "Kalina" said that the Ukrainian military is ready to launch a counteroffensive: "We can free those who are under temporary occupation in Berdyansk, Melitopol. There is only one step to liberate the South - the deblockade of Mariupol."

20:30 In the Chernihiv region, the Russian invaders tried to distribute "humanitarian aid", but the locals, even under pressure, did not take anything. The enemy is trying to hold similar events in the Kiev and Kherson regions, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports.

20:28 Refrigerators with a cargo of "200" arrive daily at the Lugansk regional hospital, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports. These are the bodies of soldiers of the 2nd Army Corps, who suffered significant losses. Lines of relatives of the victims lined up near the district executive committees.

20:27 In Crimea, separate units of the Russian Marine Corps have lost up to 90% of their personnel, there are no reserves to restore losses, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said.

20:24 Sadovyi said that there is a complete ban on the sale of alcohol in Lviv. Earlier, the governor said that in the region the ban is valid from 21:00 to 10:00.

20:22 The governor of the Nikolaev area Vitaly Kim calls on local residents whenever possible to clean up bodies of the Russian occupiers in the released territories. According to him, they will not turn into fertilizers - this is a myth. On the contrary, cadaveric poison will then interfere with the sowing.

Boo Hoo: Leftists complain about Republicans' anti-grooming bill
[TheNewRepublic] Attempting to defend Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, House Bill 1557, Christina Pushaw, the press secretary for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, accused the bill’s opponents of preying on children. “The bill that liberals inaccurately call ‘Don’t Say Gay’ would be more accurately described as an Anti-Grooming Bill,” Pushaw wrote on Twitter, ahead of a vote in the state Senate. If you are against the bill, she added, “you are probably a groomer.” Those opponents would include gay Florida state Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith, who called this out as a “bigoted attack,” to which Pushaw replied, “A hit dog hollers.”

Last week, H.B. 1557 passed the state legislature and headed to DeSantis’s desk (where he will most likely—but hasn’t yet—signed it into law). The resulting scramble to defend the Florida bill to a national audience has led the “grooming” charge to circulate more widely and perhaps more explicitly than it has before. On Fox last week, Laura Ingraham threw in behind DeSantis and the bill, scolding Democrats for calling the bill “bigoted” when “the real controversy” is “schools peddling gender ideology,” and calling schools “grooming centers.” In the Fox pantheon, “grooming” is being teed up as the next “critical race theory.”

#1  I’m very sorry, Spereger Graper4642 — we lost half your clever headline because it was after a double quotation mark. For some reason Rantburg cuts off all headline text after a double quote when the article is opened for editing. If you would inform me of the original, I’ll be happy to fix it, but in the meantime I just added enough so it is informative, if dull.

Thank you in advance,

Fox didn't write a song titled "We're Coming for Your Children" and have a Gay Men's Choir sing it.

We are coming , Damascus and Aleppo: HTS in video

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – A video clip circulated by activists on social media on Saturday shows members of the Public Security Service of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) in one of the main squares in the city of Sarmada, north of Idlib, saying, “We are coming, Damascus, we are coming, Aleppo.”

This came after HTS graduated dozens of groups from military and Sharia courses, some of which were attended by the leader of the organization, Abu Muhammad al-Julani.

“Our goal is not to pave a road or open a road, but rather our eyes are on Aleppo and Damascus and the liberation of all of Syria,” al-Julani said in January in a speech during the opening of the Aleppo-Bab al-Hawa road that connects the cities of Dana and Sarmada.

However, his statements aroused the ridicule of the residents at that time, as they believed that, instead of liberating Damascus, al-Julani had first to return thousands of civilians to their villages and towns, which government forces controlled without fighting or battles at the end of 2019, especially in the northern Hama and southern Idlib countryside.

“The priorities of HTS are not to confront the regime, but to work to open new fronts and restore the areas it lost,” al-Julani said in July.

Tahrir al-Sham, which first appeared in Syria at the end of 2012, controls the Idlib region and parts of the countryside of Aleppo, after expelling other Turkish-backed opposition factions.

How We Escaped From Terrorists Who Abducted Us —Katsina Girls Recount Ordeal
[SECURE.SAHARAREPORTERS] Two Katsina female teenagers, Mubaraka Naziru and Amina Rabiu, who beat feet from their abductors recently, have narrated their ordeal while in captivity.

Katsina is one of the North-West states badly hit by banditry.

The situation has led to tens of internally displaced persons camps in Zamfara, Sokoto and Katsina states.

The two teenagers were kidnapped when bandidos in large numbers invaded Batsari in Katsina State on Wednesday around 12:00am, Daily Trust reports.

Naziru and Rabiu escaped when their abductors drank to a stupor.

When the two teenagers were led to the bush by their abductors, they were told not to worry as they would be married off as soon as they were brought before the bandidos’ kingpin.

Upon their arrival, the two girls were provided with bottled juice drinks and loaves of bread while the bandidos drank themselves to a stupor.

"Upon realising that they were unconscious, we decided to run away. We walked kilometers to a hill and we were lost in the bush," the teenagers said.

The teenagers said they tiptoed out of the bandidos’ den and found their way into the bush, even though they did not know where they were heading to.

According to them, they met some herders at the foot of a hill and they were directed to the nearby village, Muniya, in Safana Local Government Area, Katsina State.

It was at Muniya that they were offered help and taken back home.

#3  Pro tip for foreign volunteers: leave your mobile phones at home
"A cruise missile attack on a Ukrainian military base housing foreign fighters was launched after Russian forces hacked into phones used by British personnel, security sources have claimed. Sources also fear some of the volunteers may have been 'turned' by Moscow's agents who have 'subverted' them by exploiting their credit card debts.

It has led to calls from the British intelligence community for the volunteers to be dissuaded from heading to the region. One source pointed the finger at Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, blaming her for encouraging Britons to volunteer. The source said: 'It is not safe. They are badly led, badly equipped and badly compromised by Russians.'

Briefly about Ukraine. 03/19/2022
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin.

[ColonelCassad] 1. Mariupol. Street fighting. By evening, no major progress was reported in the city. Cases of attempts by enemy soldiers to leave the city under the guise of civilians have become more frequent. The filtering generally works. Civilians continue to be actively pulled out of the combat zone and evacuated.

2. Ugledar. According to a number of reports taken, but there is no official confirmation yet. The RF Armed Forces actively advanced in the direction of Kurakhovo. There are prerequisites for an offensive from the east to Velikaya Novoselka. In Maryinka, after several days of fighting and powerful artillery preparation, it was possible to inflict serious losses on the enemy and make some progress, but the complete capture of the Maryinsky fortified area is still far away.

3. Avdiivka. No significant changes. The positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are holding here, despite many days of fire.

4. LPR. Rubizhne is almost completely cleared. The troops advanced to the northern outskirts of Lisichansk. Soon the assault on the city will begin. In Severodonetsk - street fighting. It is too early to talk about the complete capture of Popasna, fighting continues in the city.

5. Kharkov. Heavy fighting to the north and east of the city. Their results are not yet clear. In the area of Izyum, the struggle for Kamenka continues, which is of decisive importance for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, holding the southern part of Izyum, which hinders the effective development of the Russian Armed Forces offensive against Slavyansk and Barvenkovo. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are well aware of the consequences of the collapse of the front near Izyum and throw here their most combat-ready reserves from the remaining ones.

6. Zaporozhye. Gulyaipole is more likely to be under the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The city was badly damaged. Most likely, pressure in this direction will increase after the liberation of Mariupol. The front between Vasilievka and Kamenskoe is unchanged. Orekhov is also under the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

7. Kyiv. Some expansion of the zone of control of the RF Armed Forces to the west and south of Kyiv, but there are no operational achievements yet. Fighting continued from the east, but there are no active movements in the direction of Brovar yet. There is no special movement towards Poltava, although the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has already stated that the advance towards Poltava will soon begin. Perhaps, there is still an accumulation of forces. Sumy and Chernihiv are unchanged.

8. Odessa. The Black Sea Fleet is still imitating a landing threat, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are engaged in anti-landing activities. Along the way, it is reported that part of the exposed sea mines was torn off by a storm and carried away towards Romania and Bulgaria. There are no major movements of troops from Odessa to Nikolaev. On the contrary, there is a process of building up the Odessa group in anticipation of the activation of the Nikolaev group of the RF Armed Forces.

9. Nikolaev. Losses during the strike on the barracks of the 79th brigade ranged from 80 to 200 killed and 200-300 wounded. In fact, one of the battalions of the brigade ceased to exist in a few minutes, which seriously reduced the ability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to conduct active operations in the Nikolaev region or to be active in the direction of Kherson. The city itself is still not stormed, the emphasis is on the methodical destruction of manpower and equipment by air strikes, missiles, MLRS and artillery.

10. Krivoy Rog. There is no serious progress yet, as under Nikolai. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation met barriers there and so far are not making active advances in the direction of these cities. Tactical reconnaissance is actively conducted deep into enemy territory due to the lack of a full-fledged front in all areas.

HTS continues mounting arrests in northwest Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Areas run by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) in Idlib governorate and the countryside of Hama and Latakia have recently witnessed an increase in arrests against journalists and civilians in a way similar to that of the Syrian government’s Shabiha (state sponsored militias) without clear charges and reasons for the arrest.

Many international and local organizations reported about the arrest of activists, media workers and residents by HTS for criticizing its policies and that of the Salvation Government (the civil wing of HTS).

Meanwhile, HTS continues to tighten the screw on residents of the areas it runs by threatening with arrest and terrifying them by force of arms urging some to say, “HTS and the regime are of the same coin.”

On March 8, The public security organ of HTS arrested the media activist Mohammed Sbeh along with his wife at a checkpoint in Sarmada town north of Idlib, northwest Syria.

HTS members stormed his house, confiscated all his media equipment and his mobile phone, and arrested his wife, who was released hours later, local sources told North Press then.

HTS follows a gang- style policy in arresting the residents and activists not showing legal arrest warrants.

HTS arrested 13 civilians and journalists during the past two months, according to human rights activists.

Earlier in March, the HTS arrested the media activists Ghayath Bakir from his house in Binnish city north of Idlib on the back of a post on Facebook calling for starting new frontlines to restore areas that government has seized recently.
